- 0:15Hello, and welcome everybody to episode forty one, the real episode forty one
- 0:20of Cards and Categories. I am Mike Coolard from ras Ball, joined as
- 0:24always by my very good friend Jeremy Burr, also from Rasball. How you
- 0:28doing tonight, Bud doing fantastic. I have a little day job us since
- 0:31we did episode forty one last week and this week because we can't count.
- 0:35But besides that, you can rely on us for all of our analysis.
- 0:40Just don't count on the counting. So really excited to be here. I'm
- 0:43glad that the whole league didn't have polar oblique this this week, so there's
- 0:46a little less to talk about, but there's lots going on. Yeah,
- 0:50And to be fair, I didn't miscount. What happened is I had already
- 0:54rolled forward the number at the top of our rundown, like beforehand, and
- 0:58then I did it again and then and check and then said the wrong date.
- 1:02It was just a wrong number, but it was a pretty momentous got
- 1:04to forty, so it was a nice round number, forty one, A
- 1:07lot less momentous. Just is it a prime number? Probably? Well,
- 1:15this is we can't go down. That's correct. I believe it is but
- 1:18on top of our heads, yeah, this is this is dangerous that we're
- 1:21trying to do math in the first minute of the pod here, So we
- 1:23should probably go back to baseball, which is I'm not going to say our
- 1:29expertise. I don't want anybody to get to to rouled up here in any
- 1:34commentary, but if we were to pick, that's where we'd say our expertise
- 1:37is leaning. Yeah, I'm certainly I feel confident about my knowledge of baseball
- 1:42over prime numbers. So yeah, let's get right into it, right into
- 1:47some prime time injuries. That is again, so like you said, the
- 1:51slate's certainly a little bit less significant than it was last week. If you
- 1:57do want to go back to last week episode, which is actually episode forty,
- 2:00I think it's also still pretty relevant because lots of those injuries are still
- 2:06impacting fantasy teams out there. You can listen to our takes on some of
- 2:10the injuries that happened and what sorts of moves you might make to mitigate them.
- 2:15But yeah, this week a little bit, a little bit fewer,
- 2:22just much fewer, I should say. So we're actually recording this on Tuesday,
- 2:25the twenty third, so keep that in mind, because I'm sure we're
- 2:30about to jinx this and somebody's going down with a major injury tomorrow. For
- 2:34sure, We'll start with the biggest one first, and that is actually,
- 2:38I mean the top two that we've got. It's kind of a toss up
- 2:40now, but I'm gonna start with the first one that we had, and
- 2:44that is Met's catcher Francisco Alvarez going down with a torn ucl in his thumb,
- 2:50so essentially that's a sprain thumb. I think this is an injury that
- 2:54we've seen a decent amount over the past few years. I especially remember on
- 2:59your Lena going through this injury maybe like five ish years ago or so,
- 3:05and Trout I think went through this injury as well, and so I've honestly,
- 3:12this is one of the most frustrating injuries I think in baseball, especially
- 3:16for fantasy baseball, when you have a player like Francisco Alvarez who you were
- 3:21relying on for the power, because this injury really seems to sap that power
- 3:25because you just can't hold the bat as well. I guess brew have you
- 3:30when you were playing back in the day, did you ever deal with like
- 3:32a thumb injury that and maybe like can expound upon us like what sort of
- 3:38impact he might have. Yeah, and I never actually uh sprained my thumb
- 3:44or toward my usale in my thumb, which is actually what he what happened.
- 3:47But I had actually a handmaid issues within my hand, And any hand
- 3:53injury ends up being an issue at impact of your swing, that's where it
- 3:58causes the issue. And so to actually follow through with that full grip on
- 4:01the bat that's where and you get this quick inse of pain right that hits
- 4:06you the second you make contact. It makes it really hard to have that
- 4:10good follow through that you need. It sounds sounds weird right once you hit
- 4:13the ball, it doesn't really matter, but there is that that instance of
- 4:16instability when you hit the ball and then that pain that really shoots through the
- 4:19hand and almost up into the wrist. And so that is like it is
- 4:24something that if you don't go get fixed, it will like eat you alive
- 4:28all season long. And it's not it's not nagging. It is painful.
- 4:31It is absolutely painful. So it has to get taken care of. For
- 4:35Alvarez, you know he's gonna be I think I just saw he be on
- 4:38the shelf for about two months with with this one, so it is it
- 4:43is unfortunate. Hopefully if it gets fixed and rehabbed. Well, it's not
- 4:48one that generally lingers too too long, but yeah, it's it's a it's
- 4:54a big shot to the Mets, and you know, Alvarez has been looking
- 4:58like one of those like up and coming, like long term stable fantasy catchers,
- 5:02more in the mold of the old school fantasy catchers, like the plotters.
- 5:06He's not the swiftest of foot necessarily, but yeah, this is definitely
- 5:13unfortunate for Alvarez and he's going to be out until what probably the All Star
- 5:16break. Yeah, and even after that. I'm not counting on too much
- 5:20from Alvarez for the rest of twenty twenty four, just because of the lingering
- 5:26pain that's gonna be in that thumb. I think, because it just doesn't
- 5:30seem to be an injury that heals super quickly. In terms of I think
- 5:35very similar to hamdmates, where you can see there has been studies where players
- 5:40who come back from a handmate injury the power is sapped for quite a while,
- 5:44you know, sometimes six to twelve months afterwards. I think if you're
- 5:48looking for rest of season, I think Alvarez could possibly be droppable. You
- 5:53know, if you're running into a lot of injury situations, it's still a
- 5:58pretty prime time for getting some talent off of your waiver wires in leagues and
- 6:02so especially you know, if Travis Darnau is still out there, who's been
- 6:08absolutely scorching hot with all of his homers, you can still find somebody that
- 6:13might be able to give you enough production to keep you afloat. And I
- 6:16think in long term, like keeper dynasty leagues, this might be a good
- 6:21buying opportunity for Alvarez, especially because I don't think if you're an Alvarez owner,
- 6:27you can look for too much from him this year, like I said,
- 6:30but going forward, I would think that during the offseason he gets the
- 6:33time to strengthen, rest and rehab that thumb even more, could come back
- 6:38even better next year. What do you think, Burup, Yeah, I
- 6:42think you're right. I actually really like Alvarez long term. I think they're
- 6:45you know, he you know, he's a twenty five to three homer catcher.
- 6:48He's the kind of guy that you're trying to put in the h to
- 6:50keep in the lineup and things like that. I know he only hit like,
- 6:54what two twenty last year, but there was definitely some baby luck in
- 7:00there, poor luck, and so you know, being a two forty two
- 7:03to fifty catcher hitting twenty five to thirty homers with the counting, So that's
- 7:06like you're just you're thrilled, you're tickled silly really as the catcher position with
- 7:13that, So I do like it long term. I think this is definitely
- 7:15in a dynasty league if you're in a rebuild situation and you're looking, you
- 7:18know, somebody lost their catcher and you've got catcher, you're not playing in
- 7:21the hang around. He got like a JT. Real Muto or something like
- 7:25that. Definitely a good opportunity to pick somebody up because I don't think it's
- 7:28something that lingers into the next season. You know, I'm a little more
- 7:30optimistic at the end of the season here. I think that he can come
- 7:33back with that and get healthy. I don't think he's like gonna hit the
- 7:38ground running, but I think, you know, maybe you know, two
- 7:41three weeks of kind of rehab games and things like that, he's gonna he'll
- 7:45be okay, but that power might take a little bit more time to come.
- 7:48So the other thing that's interesting here is I'm actually slightly intrigued by his
- 7:53replacement Omar and Nervayaz. Yeah, he's always he's always been one of those
- 7:59guys this just on the periphery of being worthwhile in fantasy, and you know,
- 8:05he's one of those guys seems like can just get hot for just a
- 8:07little at the time and be worthwhile. So you know, the first guy
- 8:11I thought it was right away was Darnault, just like you mentioned. But
- 8:13I do think that Arvaias is definitely interesting as well. If you're looking to
- 8:18plug the hole, if you have literally nothing else to look at there,
- 8:22there's there's definitely some intrigue with him. Or maybe maybe there's a Tyler Stevenson
- 8:26out there or a Shae lang Leers or something like that. Just know that
- 8:31you're gonna take a big old swipe at the batting average with every single one
- 8:33of these catchers that you're trying to try to replace with. Yeah, I'm
- 8:39not quite as high at Omar Narbias as you are, just because he has
- 8:41looked real old and watched out the past couple of years. One thing I
- 8:46am interested with in Narfias though, is he's only caught eighteen games this year
- 8:54or ten games this year, eight of them he started. He has not
- 8:58caught anybody on the pass. He's runners are perfect eighteen for eighteen in stone
- 9:03bases off of bias on the bases. So you've got to be looking to
- 9:07stream the New York Mets if you need stolem bases. It's almost like streaming
- 9:13power hitters going in and out of coups that if you find some fringe stolen
- 9:18based guys playing a series against the Mets, I think it's a great matchup
- 9:22to try to catch some lightning and a bottle there. And that's why you
- 9:26do the waiver wires on the weekends, because you think like that, gotta
- 9:30get granular, sometimes super granular. All right. The other major injury that
- 9:35we had, and this one just developed throughout the day today as we got
- 9:39more results on Tristan Costas's rib cage injury. So he left the game on
- 9:46Saturday with what looked like a pretty classic oblique injury and looked like we would
- 9:50be missing him for a good stretch. You know, usually four to six
- 9:54weeks if you have strained oblique, then the red Sox. We're calling it
- 9:58a strained rib, which I don't know how you strain a bone, but
- 10:05I'm not a medical professional. You will maybe consult Keelan on that sometimes,
- 10:09see how you can strain a bone. Unless technically what they meant is they
- 10:13he like bent the bone so much that he fractured it, because that is
- 10:16what happened. Tristan Cassas is now down with a fractured rib and they're saying
- 10:22he's going to be out quite a while, which I mean, we just
- 10:26saw large Nupar come back from cracked ribs in about four or five weeks in
- 10:31spring training. The way the Red Sox are terming this injury for Tristan Cossas,
- 10:37it sounds like it might be multiple months here because of just how significant
- 10:43it is. I don't know if like maybe there's the variation in terms of
- 10:46like the crack versus the full break, but this really hurts as. Tristan
- 10:50Cossa's first basement for the Red Sox was twenty four up and coming. I
- 10:56think he was in line for a pretty huge season and so if you have
- 11:01castas, what do you think you're doing with him this season? In long
- 11:05term? Yeah, this is another one long term, it doesn't concern me
- 11:09too much. Maybe again the blood by low opportunity in Dynasty because Tassas had
- 11:13helium. He had a lot of helium rightfully so coming into the season,
- 11:18so he was he was getting to be a hard, hard buy. But
- 11:20so that that's probably the silver lining. If you're if you're already selling in
- 11:24Dynasty, you probably have other issues. But hey, maybe this is this
- 11:26is where you're you're gonna go. I think if you're in a a redraft
- 11:31league, you're kind of stuck, which is the really hard part here with
- 11:35Kassas is just good enough that he is going to be better than anything else
- 11:39that you're gonna find out there and a waiver wire or try to you know,
- 11:41stream into or something like that, and you just don't have enough information
- 11:45to make a move of what how long he's gonna be going to be out
- 11:50with any kind of core type injury. I think this is better than being
- 11:54muscular slightly. I guess it's always bad to say a broken bone is better
- 11:58than that, But it is still concerning for him. Like the concern I
- 12:03have is do they like give him the time to heal? Like this is
- 12:05literally one of those is just like you just have to sit and let it
- 12:07heal and not overdo it, and if you come back too soon, you
- 12:11could cause much more harm than good. So I'm concerned for this year.
- 12:16But I don't know that you can drop him yet. I don't know that
- 12:18you can, and I think that that's where you have to start to go
- 12:20to the waiver wire and looking around at guys like Gavin Sheets or you know,
- 12:28if I want to say, like Ty France or maybe maybe Connor Joke
- 12:31and hold on for another two weeks and doing well. Like Actually, one
- 12:35of my favorites right now is Mark Conna. I'm not gonna pronounce it right
- 12:41from from Detroit. He has just one of those veterans that is really reliable.
- 12:45And maybe Jake Croninworth. He he got hot in that early Korean series,
- 12:50so a lot of people stacked him up. But you're probably gonna have
- 12:52to find something waiver wire and go on. But yeah, it's it's it's
- 12:58unfortunate news. I almost treat it very similar the Alvarez some scenario. So
- 13:03correct me, where am I off? What do you think about Cassas and
- 13:09how are you back? Villain? Yeah? I agree. I think he's
- 13:13talented enough to hang on too, just to see where the injury goes,
- 13:18especially because he's a great bat that plays in a great home park. In
- 13:24my column for twelve and ten teamers day, France was the only first base
- 13:28suggestion I had. It's pretty thin actually at first base in the corner,
- 13:33so you might have to get desperate and you know, dip down into someone
- 13:39like a Wilmer Flores or maybe Brian Dale. Cruz is still out there for
- 13:43you if you need some power, but it's too Jose Braws available. Yeah
- 13:48I don't Sorry, sorry, I might as well just take the zero at
- 13:52that point. But yeah, it's gonna be tough. So I do think
- 13:58that you're going to want to pay attention to how things shake out from a
- 14:03prospect perspective. Go, I don't think Matt nervous is going to be your
- 14:07answer from the Cubs, But you know, the Rockies are certainly struggling filling
- 14:13out the corners with quality bats right now that maybe somebody could find a landing
- 14:18spot there or who knows. I mean, we're just another week away from
- 14:22it all being shaken up again. Okay, now we're going to get into
- 14:26a couple of picture injuries here, because it's not another week without picture injuries.
- 14:31And so the first one we've got is Ray's closer, Pete Fairbanks,
- 14:35going down with the nerve injury his arm. And I wonder how long he's
- 14:39been dealing with this injury, because if you recall, Fairbanks really melted down
- 14:46the other week when the Rays were in Colorado. He blamed the inability to
- 14:52control his pitches and get a grip on the ball on the Coors Field humidor
- 14:58effect on the balls not being able to grip them. But I watched that
- 15:01outing and it just like did not look like he had any feel for the
- 15:07actual like ball period. And I know that Pete Fairbanks in the past has
- 15:11dealt with Reynaud's syndrome, which is like a condition in your fingers where you
- 15:18can like lose feeling and just blood flow to your fingers, and I wonder
- 15:24if that acted up in the altitude and cold of Colorado. But it's kind
- 15:28of unknown how long Pete Fairbanks could be out. I do get worried whenever
- 15:33you're talking nerve issues and pitch your arms, So I'm already kind of preparing
- 15:37for the worst here as well as Pete Fairbanks just didn't look like he had
- 15:43it all together during his outings this year. So I think it's pretty easy
- 15:50moving on to Jason Adam here if you're able to but brew I actually I
- 15:54cut Pete Fairbanks in like a savehold league that I'm in that is pretty deep
- 16:00in terms of being able to find replacements. But is that do you think
- 16:06a viable option to be cutting Fairbanks and some more less kind of esotericallyagues than
- 16:12the ones that I'm in. Maybe? Yeah, I think at this point,
- 16:18recognizing the aisles are getting a little tight, I think you're still holding
- 16:22Fairbanks because you want to see, like I don't know, maybe a week
- 16:26or two out, like how it reacts. Because he has been wind pitching
- 16:30very very good, and Tampa's used him as a traditional closer. So if
- 16:33you're in a true five y five, I think you got to give him
- 16:37a few weeks just to see. But this is one of those that nerve
- 16:41injuries, especially in the hands, like that he might never come back.
- 16:45I hate to go there, but like that, that's the kind of thing
- 16:48that you see with sometimes with these relievers, is that kind of injured just
- 16:51lingers Lingers never get the feelback walk issues come in and he's just always fighting.
- 16:56So and having a guy like Jason Adam or you know, I think
- 16:59even to Colin put Pochet like, there's guys that can come in and do
- 17:04do good work. They're not going to rush him back. But I'm not
- 17:07a save hold. Actually, I'm I actually am right with you. I
- 17:10think that's the right spot to cut him because there's just not there's a lot
- 17:12more out there. If you're in a traditional five by five and new closers,
- 17:17I'd probably probably hold hold this point. I do know that I think
- 17:21I read that the Rays are Kevin Cash, we shouldn't be shocked is going
- 17:25to go buy matchup, and so I think that means, you know,
- 17:27Adam gets probably seventy five percent, and then the tune Colin Pachet, you
- 17:33know, a few others might get mixed in from there, but I think
- 17:37Jason Adams probably the way to go for now. Yeah, I definitely agree.
- 17:42And then the next picture injury we got is Merril Kelly from the Diamondbacks
- 17:45going down with a Terry's major strain in his right shoulder, which this was
- 17:53also a strange injury the way it unfolded over the weekend that it was announced,
- 18:00honestly, like right before the start on Sunday that he was scheduled to
- 18:03make that he was dealing with shoulder troubles and then looked like he was going
- 18:10to skip the start, and then that unraveled to him being placed on the
- 18:12IEL today and the news and information of this terry major strain, which I
- 18:18think is similar to what Justin Ferlander dealt with last year, and I think
- 18:26it's close to what Senga's dealing with, but not quite. And honestly,
- 18:30I think this is more concerning than the Bobby Miller injury where we discussed last
- 18:34week. Bobby Miller went down with just a sore shoulders, shoulder inflammation,
- 18:40no strain. Here with Merrill Kelly, he's dealing with a strain. Although
- 18:44it sounds like Arizona thinks he'll be back in the minimum fifteen days. I'm
- 18:48a little bit concerned. What about you, Burp, Yeah, anytime you
- 18:52started talking about the shoulder, I get concerned, especially strains or anything like
- 18:57that. Like I I would be shocked if he's if he's back in the
- 19:02fifteen days, like shoulders, shoulders, just this might be blast movie.
- 19:08I feel like shoulders are they were actually worse than having the elbows when when
- 19:14those injuries come about, just because it feels like they're in totally yeah,
- 19:18they're just they're they're they're unknown, and it's like if when you hurt your
- 19:22elbow, it's like we know what it is, like it's like one of
- 19:25three things. And like I hate to say that folks have become experts on
- 19:27those, but the shoulder, there's so much more that can kind of go
- 19:30on in there, and it takes a lot to kind of come back from.
- 19:36So I am prised that they think he's gonna, you know, come
- 19:38back quickly and it's really just a scratch. Let's just you know, make
- 19:44it by And especially for a guy that's based on volume. Uh, it's
- 19:49concerning you know, I I you you joked earlier you asked me about my
- 19:55injury history when I when I played you know, fun fun fact. I
- 20:00don't know if you've know this, but my claim to fame for when I
- 20:03played baseball back in the in the day, I was the I was I
- 20:07think top three in the state of Illinois that we played in first single season
- 20:11hit by pitches and so that's my claim to fame. But that's also why
- 20:15I had so many injuries. But I also blew out my shoulder rotator cuff
- 20:22and labor m and all those things. Shoulder injuries are just so hard,
- 20:26so hard to come back from. So I'm holding my breath here. But
- 20:30if it is much more than you know, a week or two, I'm
- 20:37very concerned with Merrill Kelly's makeup. He is a volume pitcher, and the
- 20:41thing with the shoulder is that's the first thing to go. It's it's more
- 20:45fatigue. Is that you can still pitch, but you quit much quickly,
- 20:51go down the fatigue track, and you lose your viability deeper into games.
- 20:56And that's where Kelly gets his value. And so he's gonna make it like
- 20:59the fifth and start to try to give the six and just get lit up
- 21:02because he's gonna lose velos seas. I think it's gonna come fast. People
- 21:03are gonna see it coming. So I'm I'm a little more concerned with Merrile
- 21:07Kelly than probably the diamond Exter Leninam. Yeah, I'm me too. And
- 21:14on top of it all, MARYL. Kelly's actually thirty five, so he's
- 21:17got a lot of midleate on that shoulder. I forget that he is that
- 21:19hold because he was in Korea for a bit and you just kind of like
- 21:23lost track of those years that he has gone. But it is, I
- 21:27think, something to keep an eye on that. I don't know if I'm
- 21:30if I'm owning Meryl Kelly, I'm holding him to see kind of how this
- 21:34unfolds over the next couple of weeks. But I could certainly see it unfolding
- 21:40and not getting great updates and maybe coming to a point where you might have
- 21:42to let him go. And this is the time of season that you kind
- 21:47of have to be aggressive with those injurious like, don't get stuck using your
- 21:49old bench on injured guys. Yeah, speaking from experience, don't don't do
- 21:55that because you miss all the upstart guys. You miss you know, picking
- 21:59up these guys that were just coming out nowhere, like a Jared Jones or
- 22:02you know, I'm trying to think who else is basically all of Baltimore's hitters.
- 22:08So you know, you don't want to lose out of those opportunities early
- 22:12in the season. Yes, absolutely agree, all right, the next one
- 22:17we're going to pair together as we have two Milwaukee Brewers that hit the IL
- 22:21over the past couple of days. We have Dial Hall going down with a
- 22:26knee issue and Wade Miley also being shelved with an elbow issue. They called
- 22:33up today to make the start. It was Tobias Myers, who looked honestly
- 22:40not bad. I think in super deep leagues, Tobias Myers is just kind
- 22:45of if you are in one of those leagues where any warm body that's coming
- 22:48through is somebody that you need to give a shot. I think Tobias Myers
- 22:52might be useful for that. And also the Brewers are going to move Bryce
- 22:56Wilson into the rotation for the meantime. I just wanted to bring this up
- 23:00because there are some good pitching arms down in Milwaukee's minor league system. One
- 23:10unfortunately, he is injured right now. That's Robert Gasser, who this would
- 23:14have been a perfect opportunity for him to come up. The other one is
- 23:17Jacob Missierowski, who is a flamethrower down there, but also can't seem to
- 23:23find the strike zone right now. So I guess any sort of opportunity that
- 23:30you see right now in this Brewer's rotation because it is a pretty good team
- 23:33that like, this is a good team to try to find opportunities for pitchers
- 23:38because not only are the Brewers pretty good at pitching development and have been in
- 23:45the past few years, but the team is winning. So it's tough to
- 23:48find wins in our fantasy game nowadays, and this is the type of team
- 23:52that I like to try to find those types of opportunities. Yeah, I
- 23:56think you kind of want the same spot I did, which is I'm a
- 24:00little bit more intrigued by what's in that minor league system. I don't know
- 24:02that they even are ready yet, but Misarowski is I think the one with
- 24:06the highest upside to me and guy that I've kind of been trying to slowly
- 24:11acquire in dynasty leagues. I think there's just a lot of potential there.
- 24:15In the short term, I think we're probably going to see more around Bryce
- 24:18Wilson to your point, and just not a lot to get excited about Bryce
- 24:25Wilson. I think he's gonna He's probably one of those kind of guy you
- 24:27can play a few matchups here and there, but I think really the question
- 24:33is how long are we going to be out, you know, without these
- 24:37guys, and does that give enough time for somebody in the minors to really
- 24:42be elevated, like like to figure things out, get the control under under
- 24:47control, under control, and go forward. So right now, to me,
- 24:52it's a non event. I don't know what your thoughts are, though,
- 24:56Yeah, I should have maybe done one quick Google search on Robert Gasser
- 25:00before I brought this up, But it does look like he is going to
- 25:03be back within the next week at least. He's been down with a bone
- 25:07spur in his elbow for the past month in spring since spring training, so
- 25:11I think that's Actually I'm very intrigued to see how Robert Gasser's first outing goes
- 25:18in his return back from that injury, because this is also a situation where
- 25:22it's getting dire enough in Milwaukee that they want to compete for the division overall
- 25:30and might just be willing to throw still rehabbing Robert Gasser out there for three
- 25:34or four innings and just kind of limp along. But that could also secure
- 25:40Robert Gasser's spot in the rotation going forward. Yeah, and so if he
- 25:45does get called up, and I think the same for me Asarowski, like
- 25:48either of those guys get called up, I think they do call for immediate
- 25:51action, right I don't know that either of them call for back action right
- 25:55now, but I think either of them call for probably team I think it's
- 26:00a Flyer fourteen anything deeper. I think you have to to go after him
- 26:04the thing with like a gas er, Like you're not looking for these crazy
- 26:08like whipped ratios or even maybe crazy era. He's a k guy. He's
- 26:15coming out there throwing gas. That's why his name is Gaser. And you
- 26:19know you're looking for that, and you're looking for some some some strikeout volume.
- 26:23So he did get have one hundred and thirty five innings in the minors
- 26:26just last year, so I think you know there's there's definitely some some value
- 26:32there. I'm just I'm not touching either guy. I don't I don't know.
- 26:36I don't know what the Brewers are doing. That's my proud, Like,
- 26:37I just don't know if they're going for it or not. Like it
- 26:40feels like they shouldn't be that good. Feels like they're doing okay because the
- 26:42rest of the Central is terrible like every year. So I'm watching I'm watching
- 26:48this one closely. Yeah, honestly, the Brewers might just Bash their way
- 26:52to the division titles somehow, because I thought that the offense was weak,
- 26:56but it is ferocious. Like I fit starting to not like start pictures against
- 27:03Milwaukee because William Contreras has been on a tear. But yeah, we'll see
- 27:07how this unfolds in Milwaukee. But I'm certainly I think obviously, just based
- 27:14on where they're at right now, gas Are probably will come up before Miss
- 27:17Rawski and I'm certainly watching that going forward. Okay, next picture injury that
- 27:22we have is Christian Javier from the Houston Astros being placed on the fifteen day
- 27:27IL yesterday with some sort of neck injury. I couldn't exactly nail it down,
- 27:33but it's like a sore neck or a strained neck or something along those
- 27:37lines. Again, a little bit concerning that, it's a little vague,
- 27:41and neck injures for pictures are a little bit bigger deal than I think sometimes
- 27:48we give initial thought to because again, it's kind of a part of the
- 27:53whole shoulder portion of your body and all those things working in conjunctions. So
- 28:00it could really unravel for Javier if you know, he can't get back together
- 28:07pretty quickly. But again, the Astros recall Spencer Araghetti a pod favorite here,
- 28:12and so I just wanted to check in on your your temperature of Spencer
- 28:17Araghetty. I know he's looked rough in his MLB debut, but there were
- 28:22some underlying metrics in terms of his actual velocity and the FIP being a little
- 28:32better than the surface level stats. So I wanted to see you still considering
- 28:37Spencer Araghetty and what do you think he could do with this another chance in
- 28:41rotation. Yeah, I'm still I'm still on the sidelines with with with with
- 28:47speak getti here. I think it's sorry, I can't. You can't bring
- 28:51Spencer Ragedy up without calling the spaghetti. Maybe we're the only ones that do
- 28:55that, but there's still a way. We're the only ones. Absolutely no
- 28:57way. But I'm just the control. The control is just too much for
- 29:03me. Like there there there's a there's a point where it's just like yeah,
- 29:07like I can I can deal Like Gaser I think is a good example,
- 29:08right, He's he's not a control guy, but he's like he's in
- 29:12the three mid threes cape or walk per nine, like I can see it,
- 29:17and he has a good outing. He can go crazy, Like I
- 29:19just you know, rag Getty is his last three stops. I get that
- 29:26the innings aren't crazy this year in Triple A and MLB, but like,
- 29:30he's not kept him below five, and when he was below five, he
- 29:36was in the high threes. Like, he just doesn't doesn't just doesn't do
- 29:41it for me as far as the control, and I'm just I'm wanting him
- 29:44to figure that out. So he does that, he could be so good
- 29:47and he just he just hasn't. So I'm Christian Javier. I'm sorry I
- 29:52wasn't too concerned interested in him. There's a lot of other concerns there,
- 29:56with the ground ball rate, with the cave dropping, the velocity coming down.
- 30:02He's kind of from what we hoped he was, you know, when
- 30:06he when he first came up, it just hasn't panned out. And Ragedtty,
- 30:08I just I don't know that there's enough there that I I can will
- 30:14willingly take the risk on a blow up game, because he's the kind of
- 30:18guy they can go like one inning and give up like nine runs and you're
- 30:22not shocked about it. Now, I feel like that's happened a lot to
- 30:26a lot of guys this year. Unfortunately, Cole Reagan's just did did it
- 30:30himself, like yeah, but yeah, it's it. So I'm I'm I'm
- 30:34I'm still on the sidelines with Spencer Ragedy. Yeah, I mean I think
- 30:38I'm going to. I haven't watched any of his starts, like in like
- 30:44actually just watch it the way he pitches. He did look a lot better
- 30:48on the fifteenth against the Braves, with two earned in four innings and only
- 30:52walked to. But he is his zone rate is actually like higher than Blake
- 30:59snails, So so I do wonder if he's trying to approach things in the
- 31:03Blake's snow, you know pitching style where if you do have a fastball and
- 31:11slider that are working well enough, you can get chases. And it's just
- 31:15more of like trying to put those eyes on what Arragetty's arsenal looks like to
- 31:19see if he actually is one that would work, because if it is a
- 31:26good enough slider and just is able to control the fastball enough to keep hitters
- 31:33off balance, that you can see where it could possibly work out. I
- 31:37just I'm intrigued, I would say, but I don't think I'm picking him
- 31:41up yet. But we'll add him to plenty of watch lists out there.
- 31:47Yep, I'm with you. Okay. Well, with that, we are
- 31:52going to wrap up kind of the news and fancy discussion. We haven't had
- 31:56too much of a card discussion here in a few weeks, so I thought
- 32:00we could really dive into it this week as we go back and look at
- 32:05cards of players who are certainly up in the markets over the past month.
- 32:12I think this happens a lot within baseball card collecting. You get a little
- 32:15bit of information and fresh stats in a new year, and then the prices
- 32:21get a little bit wonky in terms of fluctuating up or down based on performance
- 32:25pretty quickly right off the bat. I think here on the podcast, from
- 32:30a fantasy standpoint, we preach a lot of patients in the early on,
- 32:34but in the card game, you've got to be moving quick to be able
- 32:37to find the right markets for your cards and make sure that you are selling
- 32:43them at the right peak and the right times. So I think it's a
- 32:46great time for us to dive into some of those players that are getting into
- 32:52different price ranges or different fluctuations that I think we can take advantage of as
- 32:57collectors for both like collecting, like if you want to store up more of
- 33:01these cards in the future and to move on from some of these guys.
- 33:06As you know, now is the time to strike when the iron is hot.
- 33:09So Brew, is this like also a big time for you to start
- 33:13evaluating your card collection and going into these sorts of stats and analysis. Yeah,
- 33:21this is you know, the there's like two points in the season that
- 33:25to me, you really spend a little time like as a collector slash seller
- 33:30try and decide what to do with you with your collection, especially if you're
- 33:34in that prospecting game. That's beginning of the season, and then that's all
- 33:38up time. So that second one is not really defined. This is when
- 33:42your guys getting called up, but at the beginning of the season. Is
- 33:45that like guys going off small sample sizes things like that. When that happens
- 33:50later in the season, when a guy just has a hot like few weeks,
- 33:52their prices just kind of, you know, kind of stabilized, like
- 33:57they just don't get the same peaks and valleys season because it takes a little
- 34:00bit longer for them for say the media the casual fan to kind of pick
- 34:05up on that, Hey, I'm gonna go back to Connor Joe earlier because
- 34:08he's you know, darling every April that you know, all of a sudden,
- 34:14it's like, man, this guy's coming out of nowhere. He might
- 34:15be breaking out. If that happens in middle of July, you're you're just
- 34:21you're you miss it. You just don't see as weasily the valuations are aren't
- 34:24a significant So definitely this is the time I'm looking kind of at who's who's
- 34:30popping, who's going off, and where where are the card prices going that
- 34:32are a little bit outsized of the market, and I might want to capitalize
- 34:37on those And for for for those listening, my card strategy is sell my
- 34:43cards, to buy more of my cards, to sell my cards, like
- 34:45it's it's a vicious cycle and so and it makes taxes fantastic, by the
- 34:50way, But you know that this is absolutely that time to be kind of
- 34:55digging through and be like, wait a second, I have this guy.
- 35:00I really forgot about this card because it came out of nowhere. So definitely
- 35:06exciting time of the year will be kind of digging through through those cars and
- 35:08seeing, hey, can I flip something here? Yeah? And I think
- 35:13you are a little bit more cutthroat than I am honestly in terms of really
- 35:16moving on when the price jumps, partly because I do like having just like
- 35:22rookie cards, especially of all players, and so that is part of the
- 35:29reason, like I got back into card collecting was I was really sad and
- 35:34then missing out, missed out on any like kind of the initial investment round
- 35:38from mon Soto and Ronald Kunya and Shoho Tani and all those cards that came
- 35:45out in twenty eighteens. So I wanted to make sure that I had a
- 35:49pretty solid rookie and Bowman first card collection. To be able to have rookie
- 35:54cards of any of like the big stars coming through, we not have to
- 35:59go back and pay you know, forty fifty dollars much more than market when
- 36:05I could have you know, bought it out of a pack or bought it
- 36:07for a couple bucks upon the initial release. So with that in mind,
- 36:13though, like certainly when we're seeing some of the price spikes that we have
- 36:16seen on some of the players that we're talking about, it is always time
- 36:22to move on some of these players, especially once we get I think people
- 36:27will see once we get into the discussion of like who some of the prices
- 36:30are up for, like why we might be moving on these guys, and
- 36:34certainly in some of the same way that we do from a fantasy perspective,
- 36:39but in car collecting, it does seem like people will buy these, Unlike
- 36:45in your fantasy leagues when you're trying to shop around the hot hitter of the
- 36:49week with a six hundred babip, lots of people see through that in the
- 36:52fantasy game. On the card game, maybe not always so much. But
- 36:55before we even get into that, what sorts of ways are you you tracking
- 37:00values on your cards so that you know that your cards are ready to sell
- 37:06or have had spikes in prices. Yeah, I mean there's there's probably two
- 37:12ways that I look at that, And you're right, I'm not emotionally attached
- 37:16to things as much as they should be. Granted you say that it ends
- 37:21up happenings. I sell it, then like a month later I buy the
- 37:22same card back. But you know, as I go through the first is
- 37:29just really just watching kind of that the market on either Twitter or just eBay,
- 37:32just literally just seeing like what names are just all of a sudden coming
- 37:37up, and the prices just seem to be different. And so some of
- 37:42the guys that we'll talk about today, I think that's where they just show
- 37:45up all of a sudden. You're you're seeing them be like this this Why
- 37:50is this guy's cards? All of a sudden just keep popping up my timeline?
- 37:52What's going on there? And you look at it? Or I guess
- 37:57the third way kind of the fantasy world, who's just who's just got hot,
- 38:00Who's who's made the news? Things like that, that's generally one to
- 38:04kind of go look at, you know, the the other police. And
- 38:07there's something I think we're gonna use here is there's a number of websites out
- 38:09there. One we'll call out sportscard investor dot com that does track sales on
- 38:16things like eBay for different various card whether it's graded, whether it's raw,
- 38:21and can kind of help you see like here's the cards that are hot,
- 38:23here's the ones that are jumping. Maybe not always the easiest to filter through,
- 38:28and things like that, but that's okay, it's fun. Well,
- 38:30that's a really good source to kind of see what's taking place, or even
- 38:34look at guys similar that have kind of come up and what happened with their
- 38:37prices. I think there's really good examples out there of guys that you look
- 38:42back on, you're like, man, this guy's price has jumped up,
- 38:45and like, you know, I you know, I think a guy that
- 38:47I've compared a lot to cards who is like or you're Don Alvarez. Your
- 38:52Don is a fantastic hitter. I don't think there's any questions about that.
- 38:57He doesn't seem to have any off the field issues that take away from his
- 39:00his pricing and e anything like that place on a decent team. And his
- 39:05cards when they first came out, it's like his rookie cards those were they
- 39:08were expensive, like they were, you know, five bucks a pop for
- 39:12a paper rookie base top series one right, and he had a lot of
- 39:19helium, And they've kind of jumped up as he did really well, and
- 39:23then they've really settled. And so look at other like young power hitters that
- 39:29come up, they have a similar profile and when their cards jump, and
- 39:31then he was like, compare to somebody like your down, He's like,
- 39:34he's a top twenty hitter in the league. Where is his rookie card now?
- 39:37Where is his first bowman now? And looking at those and be like,
- 39:40all right, I'm talking about you know who wanted Michael Bush. We'll
- 39:46hit I'm in the second here, and his cards are going like crazy,
- 39:51Is he your Don Alvarez? No he is not. Maybe somebody can correct
- 39:55me, but look at his prices versus somebody like that and be like,
- 40:00yeah, it's time to sell, It's time to go. So I use
- 40:01a few different things there, you know, a little bit ad hot within
- 40:06everyone's well's worth just going out there and just like like I said, Sportscard
- 40:08Investor and going out and seeing what are the trends in the market. Yeah,
- 40:13and that is really where we're going to especially be deriving the information for
- 40:19this discussion is from sports Card Investor. I know that they also have a
- 40:22premium product called market Movers, where I think you get an app and you
- 40:27can kind of punch in all the cards and your collection and make sure that
- 40:31you know it's linking back I do. I think Sports Card Investor is probably
- 40:36the best out there that I've seen in terms of actually like harvesting the data
- 40:40and the information and putting it together in one place. Because eBay has the
- 40:45same sort of function where it will like tell you purchases that you've made and
- 40:52trying to like track it with eBay prices. But it's bad. It's it's
- 40:55not very accurate, and eBay like the algorithm or AI that is running that
- 41:02just doesn't exactly know how to search for cards efficiently on eBay and trying to
- 41:07line them up so that I think it works for bigger cards. You know,
- 41:12if you've got like the upper deck Griffy Rookie card, eBay knows what
- 41:17that is and can track it pretty well. But when it comes to modern
- 41:21cards or parallels, that's when it starts kind of crumbling and falling. Apart,
- 41:27of course, you've also just got the old school method where you could
- 41:30still subscribe to Beckett magazine and look at the up and down arrows, which
- 41:36those values are funny that like reflecting back on it as a kid, that
- 41:40they felt like the source of truth, like a Bible in terms of value.
- 41:45Nowadays, those those Beckett prices are a little squishy that when I've seen
- 41:52them, I don't know exactly what the updating process is there, but I
- 41:55think it's honestly still pretty manual that they might even like pull like local card
- 42:04collecting shops to be able to get information, but it's a it's a very
- 42:07strange market, and I don't think reflects actual market conditions as much as sports
- 42:13card Investor or even honestly eBay at times. Yeah. I was actually at
- 42:17the card show this this weekend. When I say card show, he was
- 42:20like four tables, so it was really really intense. And I was talking
- 42:23to one of one of the guys that was set up there and I went,
- 42:25it's table and he goes, just to clarify, I literally just put
- 42:30Beckett prices on all these and so they're way overpriced. It was basically his
- 42:34commentary is just like I just do that because then we just kind of know
- 42:37generally where they're at. And then well he's like, probably half this kind
- 42:43of was the was the commentary, and so like, yeah, but so
- 42:45it gives you something to work with and the ups and the downs. But
- 42:49it is like, yeah, back at, back at, you're right back
- 42:52in the day, like it was the gospel because you didn't have the same
- 42:55you know, technology to use, so it probably was just double backday.
- 43:00We just didn't know it's true. Yeah, all got caught up in it.
- 43:05Okay, well let's get into the players that we want to discuss and
- 43:07so, like I said, I think you'll start finding some general themes that
- 43:13parallel with on field performance or on field hype with a lot of these guys.
- 43:17But let's just get into it. And so the first guy that is
- 43:22obviously up is Jackson Holiday. I think everybody could have seen this coming as
- 43:28he was called up recently. Although has been struggling at the major league level
- 43:32for the Baltimore Orioles right now, but he is only twenty years old and
- 43:37the sky is the limit for him in terms of what his future might be.
- 43:43He is playing second base right now, but you would think that eventually
- 43:46he gets a crack at playing shortstop, as you know, maybe Gunner Henderson
- 43:50moves over to third base in a few years, and that would obviously just
- 43:54shoot the values I think even higher up for Holiday as we see what shortstop
- 44:00can add to I mean, I think, especially going forward, lots of
- 44:04people you're not just looking for like five hundred homer hitters and three thousand hitters
- 44:10to hit guys to invest in going forward, but you're also looking at high
- 44:15war players like Rookie Betts. You know, going forward, playing shortstop is
- 44:20going to be certainly one of those, but yeah, especially, I mean
- 44:24Jackson Holiday's profile in terms of cards are up across the board because of this,
- 44:29and some of the prices, especially on the higher end, are absolutely
- 44:32goofy, you know, as expensive as Mickey Mantle cards and other Hall of
- 44:37famers. But especially the one I want to focus on here is just the
- 44:40Base twenty twenty two Bowman draft first bowman for Jackson Holiday, because that is
- 44:47the one that I think is going to be the most common and probably just
- 44:52like the one that he's known for until he has a tops Rookie card that
- 44:55comes out. But that card is up currently on Sports Card Investor as we
- 45:01talk, roughly forty percent over the past month or so, which, honestly,
- 45:07I'm a little bit surprised because Jackson Holiday's prices have been pretty high ever
- 45:10since these cards were released. So Brew, if you have any Jackson Holidays,
- 45:15what do you do with them? Yeah? Well, unfortunately I don't
- 45:20really have many Jackson Holidays. I don't either. You know. The part
- 45:23of it was, and we'll talk about this as we go through. You
- 45:29know, Jackson Holiday, you know when you get called up, like there's
- 45:32a hype that comes and if you actually look in some of the detail,
- 45:37you know, as they look across like that thirty days he says up,
- 45:39But there's actually very distinct spike right when when he got called up his prices.
- 45:44I'm just looking at his first Bowman chrome. The average price the day
- 45:49before you got called up was about from a raw perspective, was like nineteen
- 45:52dollars. The next day it was twenty nine, So you know it have
- 45:55about fifty percent increase in value, the thing. And that's very typical,
- 46:00right, very typical of a hot prospect that's killing it in the miners getting
- 46:06called up, their cards rocket for like two three days, and then what
- 46:10kind of meter depends on the performance the thing with Holiday. There's two things
- 46:15against him here. One, he was terrible when when we first came up,
- 46:21not that that's gonna be who he is long term. And I actually
- 46:22thinks he started to look a little better as late, but his cards actually
- 46:27just dropped almost lower, like a week later than where they were when he
- 46:30called up, or like ten days later, because of that cycle. And
- 46:35the other piece I think he's calling Holiday to be a little bit more volatile
- 46:38is that he's in that twenty twenty two Bowman and that's the peak of overproduction
- 46:45for bowmen. And so you know him and a few others in that that
- 46:50twenty twenty two class and even some of the twenty twenty three class are so
- 46:54overinflated from a rent run perspective that they're just much more readily accessible. And
- 47:00so if you're looking at old comps or different players, like it's a tease
- 47:02or a soda or guys that we kind of mentioned earlier that you might hope
- 47:07Holiday becomes, it's got to be you got to meter your expectation on somebody
- 47:10like Holiday because there is some over production there. So if the price is,
- 47:15like if you didn't sell already, you actually might want to hold Holiday
- 47:19at this point. Uh, until he kind of re established himself and he
- 47:22you know, gets hot, But I think he's gonna see a few spikes
- 47:27along the road once he starts to show who we really believe he is,
- 47:30and then his cards will kind of recover and jump back up. His his
- 47:36autos and things like that. They were already just so got started high.
- 47:38It almost didn't change anything. Uh, they were just absurd. Those will
- 47:43come down over time. There's no question his autos are not going to stay
- 47:45at like five hundred dollars. Yeah, and I think it'll also be a
- 47:51little bit more watered down once he actually has Rookie carts coming out, which
- 47:54I think. I mean, they haven't put out any of the checklists or
- 47:57anything, but just reading the tea leaves, you would put Jackson Holiday in
- 48:01twenty twenty four Tops Update because he has had tops Now cards released with the
- 48:09RC logo on it, which means he's going to have a Rookie card in
- 48:14twenty twenty four, which is honestly unfortunate that it's got to be on this
- 48:19twenty twenty four its nine. Do you think there's a chance that he makes
- 48:22in the Series two? I know that, like you have me like right
- 48:25around opening day or shortly, that he's right on the border of Series two.
- 48:30But my guess was Update like they want him to be the anchor of
- 48:32Update. I think so too. I think they're honestly probably going to do
- 48:37what they did with Julio Rodriguez and Bobby Witt a couple of years ago,
- 48:40where they put short prints of their rookie cards into Series two, but then
- 48:45the official rookie card was in Update that I think we could see something similar
- 48:51with Holiday, where there's some sort of limited variation short print in series two
- 48:57that isn't in the base checklist. Well, I really hope they don't do
- 49:00exactly what they did with Witt and Julio, because that was a disaster where
- 49:04they like didn't put them in the right packs and all kinds of things like
- 49:07that. But but I think you're right that's probably the likely outcome there,
- 49:10So I want to I want to flip it on you. Though we talked
- 49:14about Jackson Holliday, Let's let's go across the outfield here and talk about Colton
- 49:20Kowser yea also Baltimore. What are your thoughts on Kauser and how are you
- 49:24looking at him? I we we talked about looking through cards. I was
- 49:28looking through him last night and I found a Kowser uh that was in my
- 49:31dollar box and I was like, wait a second, I want to look
- 49:36at that one a little bit closer. That's what that is the fun of
- 49:38this time of year, Like you can find these these deals at card shows
- 49:42and things like that because things are just changing constantly. But what are you
- 49:45what's your thoughts on Colton Calger in his market? Yeah? I mean,
- 49:49if you want to talk about maybe the most obvious cell that I think we're
- 49:52gonna talk about tonight. Yeah, there's a couple others that are pretty heavy
- 49:57cells, but yep, especially given where the prices for Colton Kowser have gone
- 50:01as as we talk here on Tuesday the twenty third, his slash line stands
- 50:07at three sixty four four hundred, eight hundred. On the slug he has
- 50:13six homers in twenty one games, but it is fueled by a four to
- 50:17fifty two babe up. He has a thirty one point seven percent strikeout rate
- 50:23that I think especially like I can see a world where you do want to
- 50:29hold Jackson Holiday in some capacity, because I do think that the Jackson Holiday
- 50:36long term career is a pretty like there's a pretty significant percentage compared to Bose
- 50:42ballplayers that he is a multiple time All Star, you know, pushes some
- 50:46sort of Hall of Fame consideration. Is just like that kind of level of
- 50:50talent. Even though Colton Kowser is twenty four, I feel pretty confident saying
- 50:54that Colton Calser will not be that. I guess we can come back in
- 50:59a years in slam dunk on this take, but I kind of tend to
- 51:05believe a little bit more in the projections, especially for somebody with the plate
- 51:08discipline like what Cow's are showing. You know, he's on an all time
- 51:13hot streak right now. Is everything is just looking like a beach ball in
- 51:17the zone to him. But this has caused all of his cards to go
- 51:21up about fifty percent over the past few days, and if not more like
- 51:28it is, I would say that if you this is one guy that to
- 51:32your point going back through dollar boxes, I'm sure there are plenty of his
- 51:37twenty twenty one Bowman draft first chromes and bass that are buried in value boxes
- 51:45out there that you've got to dig them up and sell them as quickly as
- 51:51you can because it's going to be a balloon that deflates pretty quickly. I
- 51:54think I'm guessing you're probably in a similar boat, but I'll give you the
- 51:59chance to speak now, Yeah, I am. What's actually interesting is you
- 52:02mentioned the fifty percent over thirty days, which it is like from thirty days
- 52:07ago, so now it's actually fifty percent. What's interesting though, is kwser
- 52:12he had like a week where he just went off like he hit what four
- 52:15bombs knocked in like eight nine runs. He he just looked phenomenal. That's
- 52:21what happens when he played, you know, the Brewers and the Boss and
- 52:24the Red Sox and they're pitching, but you know, his cards shot up.
- 52:30I was looking at his his base auto and this is, you know,
- 52:32more of the typical scenario than the holiday where we're talking about like a
- 52:36five hundred, because like his there's so much hype Cowderd. I mean,
- 52:37he was a good prospect. His base auto was forty fifty dollars kind of
- 52:44you know a month ago and now to your point, it's it's maybe eighty
- 52:49two hundred dollars, but it hit almost two hundred dollars when he we hit
- 52:53that like hot week, it's it like quadrupled in value over like a week
- 52:58period. And that that's the craziness of prospects beginning of the season and hype
- 53:05and so like it just went crazy for him, and I thought it was
- 53:07like, maybe that's just an auto. I looked at his bass chrome it
- 53:10I mean, this is we're talking small dollars here, but that's my game.
- 53:15We were talking like a two dollar base chrome first and one to eight
- 53:17dollars and just like a matter of three four days, and so it just
- 53:22shot through the roof. And that's why you kind of have to pay attention
- 53:24to these guys because it's now down to half that, right, And it's
- 53:30a lot of times these spikes are literally for three, four or five days
- 53:35until people realize that he's striking out a third of the time barely walks bave
- 53:38it's almost five hundred. The card market just takes a little bit longer to
- 53:43catch up with those things than the fantasy market. Yeah. Absolutely. I
- 53:46think you also see that when pitchers have really good outings or no hitters or
- 53:51things like that, which I mean honestly thinking about like all those factors.
- 53:54I know his market is up in Jared Jones from Pittsburgh, but he's not
- 54:00on these lists right now. I do wonder how long it is before he
- 54:04is on these lists, and we can we're actually not touching on too many
- 54:08pictures this evening because I can tell you right now the best answer for all
- 54:14pictures across the board will always be to sell. Just look at Spencer Streider
- 54:17and kind of like how picture injuries have been going in the past couple of
- 54:22years, that it's tough to sell any picture when after that his injury hits,
- 54:30So you might as well try to make some money now if you can.
- 54:32You know, yeah, I think it's just the standard for pictures.
- 54:36And we do have one what we'll talk about here, But like pictures just
- 54:38don't hold value. You look at the Hall of Famers and things like that,
- 54:42and Burlander and the Scherzers and guys like that, and like unless you
- 54:46end up being a cult hero for some reason, like at the picture.
- 54:50Like one of my favorites in the card world is like Carrie Wood. He
- 54:55is this like cult hero to all of Chicago cub fans and for whatever reason,
- 55:00like they will pay whatever it takes to get a carry Wood card.
- 55:05But like you have to have something, you know, twenty strikeout game that
- 55:08like resonates, and I think Garry Woods still has the some of like what
- 55:12his career could have become, Like he somehow has prospect type like all these
- 55:15years later. I don't know how that works, but you're right, Like
- 55:20pictures like they're just like if you're if you're looking to invest in cards or
- 55:23even just casually have some value in cards, like you're looking through what things
- 55:27to pick up and maybe take a flyer on it's just generally not pictures.
- 55:31But to your point, if they get hot for like a few starts or
- 55:35have a complete game, perfect game, whatever it may be, that's like
- 55:39the time to to to take take a little ride on these guys and and
- 55:44and flip things around. But Strider, I think his his prices and we
- 55:46weren't gona talk about him today, but I was, I was looking.
- 55:49I think his prices almost cut in half just with the injury. Oh yeah,
- 55:53I believe it. But yeah, I think also while we're on Causier,
- 55:58we might as well stay just in Baltimo more in general, because with
- 56:01Jackson Holliday and Colton Kowser, you know, those values going up, and
- 56:07just the Orioles playing so well, and I think also just being a fun
- 56:14team to watch, and there's a really good chance they could kind of become
- 56:17like America's team in terms of, you know, taking down the Yankees and
- 56:22facing them all summer, and they just have a great underdog story behind them
- 56:28that I think people are starting to get into Baltimore Orioles fandom. I don't
- 56:34think it hurts that, you know, they have the bong dong and all
- 56:37these other kind of like fun things going on, But all Orioles cards are
- 56:42up in general. You know, this is spreading to Adlei, Ritchman,
- 56:46Gunner, Henderson and even the infamous Billy ripkn F face card. So if
- 56:53you do have some of these more prized Orioles cards, I would certainly start
- 56:58digging through your collect just to find them, because I think this might end
- 57:02up being a little bit more of a trend going forward to that. I
- 57:05think there is a pretty big, strong narrative of seeing kind of where this
- 57:09Orioles team could go in terms of like what the dynastic kind of possibilities are.
- 57:16So I think people are starting to invest, and especially people are just
- 57:21becoming familiar with these players and they're becoming more and more popular. So if
- 57:25you have been sitting on some Orioles cards, I think now is certainly a
- 57:30time to strike and try to move them in the market. Yeah. I
- 57:32think if you're listening to this pod as it comes out, the guy that
- 57:37I would be searching for is heestin tearstat just got called up and you know
- 57:42was doing well in the minors. You know, if his playing time's very
- 57:46unpredictable right now, we just don't know where exactly where he's going to fit
- 57:50in. But he's the kind of guy that could get a few good games,
- 57:53and his prices already kind of just jumped. But to your point,
- 57:58I think you make a great point. The Orioles are easy to root for,
- 58:00fun to root for, and that means the market, the demand for
- 58:05the market's going to go up, and both are gonna be buying their cards.
- 58:09So, yeah, any any Oriel is interesting right now, outside of
- 58:15maybe any of the pitchers, as we've already covered. Yeah, exactly.
- 58:20Okay, Well, let's get out of Baltimore now and get to the other
- 58:23really hot rookie striking on a third at the time who making us look like
- 58:30pretty good fools in terms of the fantasy analysis, and that is Elie de
- 58:35la Cruz from the Reds. I don't even know if I really need to
- 58:38explain why his market is up. If you're familiar with baseball and Eli de
- 58:44la Cruz, he's just a monster superstar in the making. He's got the
- 58:49flair, he's got the size, he's got the cannon arm, the four
- 58:52and fifty foot tanks and the inside of the park homers. He's just gonna
- 58:59be a beloved player. I think that this is the type of player too,
- 59:01where honestly, even if Elie de la Cruz kind of like flames out
- 59:06and doesn't do this long term in terms of the production, he hit another
- 59:12tater tonight as we're talking, So he's up to seven on the season with
- 59:15a one seventy nine WRC plus that it's coming together pretty well. Ellie.
- 59:22I think he's just enigmatic enough that like he still might hold value in the
- 59:25way that like, oddly I still see like Yasiel Puig hold value. That's
- 59:30exactly. It's strange that you'll find some of these guys where like they just
- 59:37won't be let go by the market. Sometimes. Jose Canseaco reminds me a
- 59:43little bit of this, although like Canseco actually you know, put up near
- 59:47Hall of Fame numbers if you know, there hadn't been the whole steroid thing
- 59:53about his aura. You know, he had, I think a chance to
- 59:55be in the conversation that you Pueags obviously not even there, but CRUs could
- 1:00:02I think kind of stay at that level. But his prices are through the
- 1:00:07roof right now because of the production. His rookie cards are in twenty twenty
- 1:00:12four Series one. Certainly, if you have any of those lying around,
- 1:00:16I would try to get those moved and listed on eBay or sold at card
- 1:00:22shows or traded or however you sell your cards as quickly as you can,
- 1:00:25because there's millions of those out there and you can find one pretty easily if
- 1:00:30you want one back. But the bigger part here is that he's got lots
- 1:00:37of Bowman first out there as well as like different variations because it was in
- 1:00:40the Base twenty twenty two Bowman sets, so it was very well produced.
- 1:00:47Again, I think if you've got Chrome and Base of those cards, those
- 1:00:52are the ones to be moving on from. But the big one that's actually
- 1:00:55up on Sports Card Investor right now is the Mojo, which I'm impressed by
- 1:01:01because I love the Mojo parallels all the time and it would be really hard
- 1:01:06for me to part if I owned one of those Elie Mojo refractors. What
- 1:01:08about you, well, I think Gritty covered that I have no soul,
- 1:01:13so that would have been sold like yesterday. How you wouldn't even have You
- 1:01:19don''t even have it, Ellis, you probably don't have any to you?
- 1:01:22No, I actually I think I do. Actually I think I have maybe
- 1:01:25a base or two to your point earlier. Like again, you and I
- 1:01:30are both just collectors at heart, and so I do have I tend to
- 1:01:34hold on to like a first bowman, a rookie of all the key guys,
- 1:01:38and they go back like two years later and be like man and I
- 1:01:42was really open, Abraham Torro was gonna work out and didn't didn't come to
- 1:01:45fruition, right. But I think you know you're right like Ellie right now
- 1:01:51is it's an absolute cell just because of how how how crazy his his season's
- 1:01:59been, and he's getting like that second bump, like not the call up
- 1:02:04bump. The interesting thing is like it tells you still how much cards are
- 1:02:08valued when they come out in the first place. Like Elie's first bow and
- 1:02:13Chrome was like a twenty dollars card when it first came out when you first
- 1:02:15ripped twenty twenty two. It's not even to the twenty dollar point at this
- 1:02:19point, even with everything he's doing, like because the overproduction is still like
- 1:02:23a maybe a fifteen to twenty dollars card, Like it's almost level to where
- 1:02:27it was, even though it's really jumped up. What I think is really
- 1:02:30interesting with Ellie is. He seems to be encroaching on a very interesting part
- 1:02:35of the hobby, which is base card value. His base cards or insert
- 1:02:39cards having value. It's like Otani, Trout, Sodo, those guys where
- 1:02:45they just have a cool base card and folks want it like heritage. You
- 1:02:50know, I just ripped some heritage and I had pulled the Otani out is
- 1:02:52the base card, and everybody wants it. It's a three four dollars card
- 1:02:58just because it's Otani and Dodgers and the cool heritage design, right, And
- 1:03:02so Ellie's starting to kind of creep into that realm right now. I don't
- 1:03:08know if you'll stay there, but he's become a collectible past the rookie card,
- 1:03:13past the first bowman, and so I think that's the space to be
- 1:03:16to be watching. Yeah, I think, yeah, that's a great call.
- 1:03:22And in terms of going forward, I mean, I think it also
- 1:03:24gives a little bit of a boost for all twenty twenty four product that you're
- 1:03:29ripping in terms of, like we've reiterated on this show, like the best
- 1:03:32time to sells, you know, the week of the product coming out,
- 1:03:37and then it just kind of like progressively goes down a ramp for the first
- 1:03:44six to eight weeks until it levels off after you know, about six or
- 1:03:47eight weeks. But you've got to get the cards sold within that little window,
- 1:03:52and especially if you've got inserts or different parallels of allegited crews that you
- 1:03:59might get in some of these sets, like it does provide a little bit
- 1:04:02of a boost when you're going through and ripping, which is is nice to
- 1:04:05be able to have that because some of the sets that have come out over
- 1:04:11the past few years haven't had a rookie like that buried in there where you
- 1:04:15could always guarantee getting you know, five to ten bucks back for one of
- 1:04:18your cards. Yep, absolutely so, yep, at least to be fun.
- 1:04:21But he is definitely a sell right now. Just the market's just too
- 1:04:25hot. Okay. Yeah, So now we're going to get into i think
- 1:04:29probably one of the biggest cells that we've got, and you alluded it to
- 1:04:32it, I'll actually let you kick it off in terms of Michael Bush,
- 1:04:38who moved from the Dodgers to the Cubs in the off season and obviously has
- 1:04:44started hot out of the gate. But what do you think about the Michael
- 1:04:46Busch cards that are out there and give us a little background on what they've
- 1:04:49been doing in the market. Yeah, so Michael Bush is he's gone crazy
- 1:04:57as far as his up hitting has been concerned with the Cubs. And I
- 1:05:02actually was being chastised in the comments of my top one hundred hitter article for
- 1:05:06not putting Michael Bush in the top one hundred hitters. And you know,
- 1:05:12he he doesn't look as scary under the covers as a few of these other
- 1:05:15guys that we talked about, like Kowser. But I'm just it's still I'm
- 1:05:19it's Michael Bush. I'm just I'm not I'm not there. Like he might
- 1:05:24end up being a useful player, but he's not going to be an All
- 1:05:27Star. And so when you when you look at it Bush, you know,
- 1:05:30and I'm just looking at his his first first Bowman. You know,
- 1:05:34Michael Bush was a guy that you could buy for for nothing. You know,
- 1:05:39go back about a month ago. His cards were like twenty bucks his
- 1:05:44first Bowman autos or like twenty bucks. And but you remember, like he's
- 1:05:48in he was in his Dodgers uniform and he went from big, big market
- 1:05:53the Dodgers to big market in the Cubs and there's like this crossover, right
- 1:05:57for folks still collect any of their plays in the Jersey when it was their
- 1:06:00old player, and then you got a new market, and both those are
- 1:06:03huge markets. So with him getting hot and you know, look at the
- 1:06:08stats. So he's hit six homers across the first you know, twenty games,
- 1:06:12he's knocked in fifteen, hitting three or nine. You know, he's
- 1:06:15he's he's doing just fine, and he's kind of infringed himself that first moment
- 1:06:20that was you know, twenty bucks is now up to almost sixty and was
- 1:06:26kind of peak peaking around like the seventy dollars mark. And so we're we're
- 1:06:30talking about a card that you know, going back even before about a month
- 1:06:35ago when he was making the roster, I think, I think I remember
- 1:06:40seeing Michael Bush cars like five ten dollars, like the autumns like it was
- 1:06:45it was just dirt cheap, and so they are sky high. That's like
- 1:06:47a six to seven time return. And this is this is the biggest sell
- 1:06:54of anybody I think on this list, I am running and selling all Michael.
- 1:07:00I probably don't realize if I have Michael Busch cards like that's that's the
- 1:07:02problem. Like there's those guys where you're just like, well, I Anastacity's
- 1:07:05just in case. Like Michael Busch wasn't even on the just in case group.
- 1:07:09It was just like, Eh, he's in Dodger Blue. Maybe that
- 1:07:13means something. And so yeah, I'm the market is jumping up. It's
- 1:07:18like it's up like over two hundred percent across that time. But it's gonna
- 1:07:23it's gonna come. It's gonna come tumbling back down before too long when he
- 1:07:28kind of cools into kind of standard even if he still plays well, it's
- 1:07:31just gonna cool once once he gets to a little bit more regular performance at
- 1:07:38the end of the day. So I don't know, do you have any
- 1:07:39Michael Busch cards. If you do, are you selling? Uh, that's
- 1:07:43a good question whether or not I do, because especially compared to the other
- 1:07:47players that we've talked here, it is the furthest back Bowman. He was
- 1:07:51in the twenty nineteen Bowman draft set. So if you are collecting cards like
- 1:07:57he might be just tucked back in a box for the past five years.
- 1:08:00As not to mention like the twenty nineteen Bowman, the gross design. Not
- 1:08:09that I'm a big fan of like money at the Bowman designs, but that
- 1:08:12one was was rough. And so there's plenty of those Bowmans that I've got
- 1:08:17sitting around and haven't looked at, because like they're certainly not on like the
- 1:08:24upper ends of my list of like the cards that I like to look at
- 1:08:27when you know you're cracking open your boxes and like just kind of want to
- 1:08:30look at some of the cool cards he owned. So yeah, honestly,
- 1:08:33I've probably got a couple of those twenty nineteen Bowman's stashed away somewhere that I've
- 1:08:40got to go dig out, because, like you said, I think even
- 1:08:44compared to Kowser, Bush is an easier sell because he's also two years older.
- 1:08:49Like that is a part A lot of the problem is that like if
- 1:08:54you are looking for times to sell on these players, like you only get
- 1:08:58a couple times between a few hot streaks before the market just kind of bombs
- 1:09:03back out and sends the base of that Bowman Chrome card even back down to
- 1:09:10just a few bucks. Yep, I think you're right, and so sell,
- 1:09:15sell, sell, Okay, Well, the next one is I think
- 1:09:18this was just more of a fun one just to call out Arizona Diamondbacks Blaze
- 1:09:24Alexander he made our list that he his market has been significantly up to as
- 1:09:29he has subbed in at shortstop for Heraldo Perdomo and looked pretty dang good doing
- 1:09:33it. Honestly that I think that he's going to be a solid player,
- 1:09:39like role player for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Honestly, he's got a pretty cool
- 1:09:43auto too. But he was also in the twenty nineteen Bowman set. But
- 1:09:47he was in just Base twenty nineteen Bowmen, So I know I've got some
- 1:09:51of these buried somewhere that I've got to go dig them out after the show.
- 1:09:56I think this is just another reminder too that, hey, his market
- 1:09:59is been significantly up that you know, over the past thirty days. It
- 1:10:02looks like his auto is off roughly seventy five percent. We're actually probably talking
- 1:10:08right now about Bard's the peak of his hot streak, so maybe it's even
- 1:10:14going to be in the downs up a little bit after this. But uh,
- 1:10:16what about you do you you've probably got some Blaze Alexander's too. It
- 1:10:19says I was just in Base twenty nineteen Bowman. Yeah, I know I've
- 1:10:25got a few of them. You know I and I, but I also
- 1:10:29know I've sold some of the past because like I remember, like seeing the
- 1:10:31Blaze Alexander looks like he's twelve in his it's been trying to shop. No,
- 1:10:38it's not like the helmet does one size too large. It's just it's
- 1:10:43just it's not great. But you know he's I think this goes to show
- 1:10:47you the markets matter, like the fan based matters, because I don't think
- 1:10:51Blaizelexander and Michael Bush are that different. Like at the end of the day,
- 1:10:56now Bush has been a little hotter, if you may, and he's
- 1:11:00maybe a little bit better pedigree things like that, but I don't think it's
- 1:11:02that drastically different. But you're talking about Blaze Alexander cards for half the cost
- 1:11:09of Michael Bush cards, and I think that really plays into you're talking about
- 1:11:11Arizona against the some LA and the Chicago markets that really do drive some of
- 1:11:16that demand. So I'm with you. There's also a little like his auto
- 1:11:21is awesome, That's there's something to be said for for that. When Michael
- 1:11:28Bush is like I think he just like scribbled and you literally I don't think
- 1:11:32there's a single letter in his auto so you know, it's it's not Randy
- 1:11:36Rose Arena style by any means. But Blaze another guy that you know,
- 1:11:42he's getting a little little hype a little by he got the call up and
- 1:11:45he's he's made a little noise. Again. I think it's gonna be on
- 1:11:48the downslope, like you said, So it's it's not something that you want
- 1:11:50to rely on, but if you're it's always fun to go back and look
- 1:11:55like these are the cards that when you're at a show or a card shop
- 1:11:58and you you hit like twenty nineteen Bowmen, like through some random box,
- 1:12:00it's like you're looking like, where's my Blaze Alexander, Like, where where's
- 1:12:04that at? Because nobody's gonna reprice Blaze Alexander and you even look at it,
- 1:12:09go, I'm not even gonna go spend my time to go reprise Blaze
- 1:12:11Alexander because you know, thirty days he's gonna be back where he was.
- 1:12:15But that's the that's the beauty of the card world that you know you want
- 1:12:19that you want the hot guy, So yeah, exactly, and getting into
- 1:12:26another really hot rookie next and I'm gonna pair up another couple of guys here
- 1:12:31again, So we have Jackson Cheerio from the Brewers, but also I mean
- 1:12:36he is off to a hot start in high A ball is a high A
- 1:12:41or singlely let me check it again, it is it's actually just single A.
- 1:12:44His brother, Jason Cheerio is off to a three ten, five hundred
- 1:12:49five seventy one start in single A for the Cleveland Guardians, but his market
- 1:12:55has been shooting up to along with Jackson Cheerio. My question here is how
- 1:13:00many people do you think are out there buying Jason Churio's not realizing that it's
- 1:13:05not Jackson Cheerio. Yeah. I think that there's definitely a risk of people
- 1:13:13getting these guys confused, So I don't know how well they're gonna, you
- 1:13:17know, be able to I think the Jason his mark is actually be the
- 1:13:25worse because it's gonna be convoluted and messed up because of Jackson. I don't
- 1:13:30think it's gonna get that same hype. So, yeah, both of these
- 1:13:33guys are really interesting, especially because Jackson signed his extension early, so it
- 1:13:38kind of got that or like they call up through the contract in a way.
- 1:13:42So his his market has been a little more level, even though it
- 1:13:44has gone. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, And even with that,
- 1:13:49like Jackson Cheerio, I I do like him if you're trying to look for
- 1:13:54a longer term hoold a little bit more like the Jackson Holliday because he has
- 1:14:00just the ability to be a different level of a superstar Jason Cherio. I
- 1:14:03think part of it too is like there just aren't very many Jason Cherio cards
- 1:14:08out there, and I think that there's a little bit of you actually saw
- 1:14:12this with Ronald Lacuna's little brother a couple of years ago, where once Ronald
- 1:14:17Lacunya was really taking that star turn, people started flocking to his brother's cards
- 1:14:23as well as like picking up his brother in fantasy circles. And I do
- 1:14:28honestly think though that like Jason Cherio has more upside than ronaldal Cunya's little brother,
- 1:14:33because I mean, he has been streading the minor leagues and all of
- 1:14:39the reports have been pretty good that like, I'm just not sure if I
- 1:14:44now would be the time to invest in Jason Cherio if you're looking to make
- 1:14:48a move to add him to your PC, or honestly maybe even from a
- 1:14:53fantasy perspective too, because it seems like the coattails of Jackson Cheerio have kind
- 1:15:00of intermingled with Jason Juril and it's really convoluted that market overall. That you've
- 1:15:05got to, I think wait for a little bit more of a deviation to
- 1:15:11show up where people start putting them in separate buckets and not really considering them
- 1:15:15a pair together the way that we just have here, before you start making
- 1:15:19any moves into the Jason Murial market. Yeah, I'm kind of I'm saying
- 1:15:25off of them for now, so it'll be interesting. Okay. The next
- 1:15:30one we have is a veteran, actually big time veteran, and I wanted
- 1:15:36to bring this one up because Mike Trout's market is back up that the rookie
- 1:15:43cards, especially for the Bowman and Tops cards started falling a lot last year
- 1:15:49after his injury with the back and with the handmate bone, and it just
- 1:15:57this is a card that both cards were only significantly kind of like kept creeping
- 1:16:01up, creeping up, creeping up in the way that lots of like Mickey
- 1:16:05Mantles from the past kind of have like always trajected up in much of the
- 1:16:11same way where you know, very popular player in Mike Trout Inner Circle Hall
- 1:16:15of Famer doesn't have the Yankees mystique, but certainly I think is going to
- 1:16:21be the defining player of this era when we look back on it. And
- 1:16:26so because of that, it looked like a pretty solid investment piece for any
- 1:16:30collection to go get a Mike Trout rookie card, because it just never looked
- 1:16:35like it was going to go down, and then it did dip. And
- 1:16:39I'm sorry to regret that I didn't maybe like get in on one of them
- 1:16:42when it did dip, because I think it has rebounded now with Mike Trout's
- 1:16:46nice start to the season. Yeah, I kind of did the same thing.
- 1:16:49I bought, uh like Trout rookie how maybe two years ago or something
- 1:16:55like that, And I would say it was kind of the market was middle
- 1:16:58of where it was overall for him, and some of the I would say,
- 1:17:00the not flagship rookies like your Bowman rookies things like that had definitely dropped
- 1:17:05in a very much more reasonable spot to get that. So you know it
- 1:17:12is, You're right, I think that you lost the chance to buy the
- 1:17:16dip on Mike Trout. Like there's a dip on Mike Trout that just doesn't
- 1:17:18make any sense. That's that's kind of unfortunate. But you know, I
- 1:17:26think he is one of the most reliable long term bets in the market.
- 1:17:30I think the same can be said for like a Wan Soda or something like
- 1:17:33that as well. His who's has dropped at the same time, and I
- 1:17:39think his will start to rebound as well. But yeah, it's Mike Trout
- 1:17:43rookie cards. If you want to what you know, you got to spend
- 1:17:45what you know, seven eight hundred dollars to get one of those. Yeah,
- 1:17:50when you talk about the markets, the Angels aren't a big market for
- 1:17:56cards, but the entire population of base all fans is and that's that's who
- 1:18:01wants to like Mike Trout. And I think you and I have sold a
- 1:18:04card shows before, like one of the most asked for players out there,
- 1:18:09inserts based cards, rookies, whatever it is. Everybody just wants to say,
- 1:18:13do you have Mike Trout? And so I'm I have the rookie card.
- 1:18:18You know, it's not greatable by any means. It's the only way
- 1:18:21I could afford it, but it's a staple of the collection. And I
- 1:18:28guess if you wanted to sell now you could, but it's I think it's
- 1:18:30got long term value. I do too that I think that like if you
- 1:18:34were able to buy during that dip, especially, like kudos to you.
- 1:18:39And I don't know if it will be dipping again anytime soon because it almost
- 1:18:44it's like Griffy too, where people I think always will put a Griffy in
- 1:18:47their collection. That I think people are the same with Mike Trout, where
- 1:18:51it doesn't matter what card it is, there's always a spot for it in
- 1:18:56my collection. Yeah. Absolutely, Griffy out those guys, there's always a
- 1:19:00spot. Yeah. Okay, well, I mean we mixed it up there
- 1:19:04a little bit with Mike Traut. So let's get back to the hot young
- 1:19:09player. Start says, You've noticed a lot in this player's market with Evon
- 1:19:13Herrera, the catcher for the Cardinals. His market has been going pretty bananas
- 1:19:18recently, So tune us into it. Yeah, you know Evon Herrera.
- 1:19:23And this is again, this is where you're just kind of keeping an eye
- 1:19:26on eBay or Twitter or whatnot. I just noticed that, you know,
- 1:19:29Herrera's name was coming up in a lot of circles in card sales, and
- 1:19:33it's just like that find finds interesting, I think with with Contreras having some
- 1:19:38injuries and Herrera being that kind of next who is supposed to be the replacement
- 1:19:43for Molinau had had shown pretty pretty well with some of those Contrares's injuries,
- 1:19:48his card had jumped and so you know he's one of those that looking at
- 1:19:53his like first his first Bowman auto, you know that was you know a
- 1:19:59card that you could by the you know, call it ten dollars, five
- 1:20:02dollars, something like that. Over the last over the off season, like
- 1:20:06it looked like he was passed by by the Cardinals, and I honestly think
- 1:20:11he probably still is. But his car jumped up and it you know,
- 1:20:15at one point it you know, there's even some sales out there of like
- 1:20:19forty or fifty dollars on that first Bowmon auto for von Herrera, and that's
- 1:20:24really just showing like the strong and the Cardinals have a strong buying car hobby
- 1:20:29base, which will we'll flip that up, but just that you know,
- 1:20:33get there, get their hot and h seemed like there's a path to playing
- 1:20:38time. He was even getting some d H type opportunities with uh flipping in
- 1:20:43and out with Contreras, so I think that's the playing time, some good
- 1:20:48results and having some pedigree of like be the Molina replacement definitely has helped Herrera.
- 1:20:55The thing is with Herrera, like his playing time path is going to
- 1:20:59decrease as people get healthy, and so I don't think that this is going
- 1:21:02to last. So I think it's a this is again a short blip,
- 1:21:04which is just kind of like being called up, like he's been up and
- 1:21:08down a lot, but all of a sudden get a chance to perform and
- 1:21:11do well. You folks that are collecting that team specifically, especially at this
- 1:21:15price, when you're talking maybe a thirty four, you know, thirty forty
- 1:21:18dollars auto, they're like, yeah, I gotta, I gotta get that
- 1:21:21first. If I didn't already have my collection. So I personally have sold
- 1:21:26a few horrers. Like I said, I have no soul with my with
- 1:21:30my favorite teams. But it's one of those Sell it now for twenty thirty
- 1:21:34bucks, come back and a dollar ben here in a few months, buy
- 1:21:39Herrera Auto for five bucks, and nobody's the wiser. Yeah, And I
- 1:21:44mean as a serious investor in Dylan Carlson and just seeing like honestly, the
- 1:21:49Cardinals have not been great at developing young players over the past four or five
- 1:21:55years, and so it is certainly one where I think it's Herrera. I
- 1:22:01mean, I know, I've got to go dig some out after this conversation
- 1:22:04as well, that he was a little bit forgotten I think over maybe the
- 1:22:10past year or two in terms of card collecting for Cardinals PC years out there,
- 1:22:15but now that he has looked much better, and I just like,
- 1:22:20I don't know, like what the long term career for Yvon Herrera really ever
- 1:22:27is that you can he's are his prices are already shooting past like what in
- 1:22:31All Star, multiple time All Star player for the Cardinals would settle at.
- 1:22:35And so yeah, you've got to jump at the chance to be able to
- 1:22:39move those on now. So certainly another player that we are selling, yep,
- 1:22:44and he's he's gotten cold for the last week, so we're down,
- 1:22:46we're on the down spin of that, but he's the playing time is still
- 1:22:50there. To your point, if anything, I need the Cardinals to kick
- 1:22:55Dill Carson in the pants. Not gonna be a millionaire, yes exactly,
- 1:22:59Yeah, we would we need to be doing this podcast anymore. We would
- 1:23:01be in Tahiti or something. No, we're still probably doing a pod podcast
- 1:23:06until he Okay, well let's get to that one pitcher that we alluded to.
- 1:23:13And I think this is also a great kind of showing of like how
- 1:23:16quickly the baseball card market can move nowadays, because his market has been up,
- 1:23:24especially since he just had like the good outing on Sunday, and a
- 1:23:29little bit going back to before that outing on Tuesday was actually solid that we're
- 1:23:33talking about Casey Mice from the Detroit Tigers. As he pitched six shutout innings
- 1:23:39on Sunday, you could see that his market flipped back up. You know,
- 1:23:43he was a former number one pick and so he had a lot of
- 1:23:45initial investment when his first card came out with Actually, yeah, this one's
- 1:23:50ancient history. Twenty eighteen Bowman Draft is where Casey Mice's first Bowman Chrome is
- 1:23:57included. But his rookie cards are in twenty twenty. Yeah, twenty twenty
- 1:24:03because this is the same year as Dan Carlson. So I know, like,
- 1:24:08especially when we were doing the research for this pod, like I'm going
- 1:24:13to be going through I've got a lot of Casey Mice cards because I've ripped
- 1:24:16a lot of twenty twenty sets and have all sorts of inserts and parallels and
- 1:24:21all sorts of kind of just non base Casey Mice cards. But I think
- 1:24:28this is also just a heartening story in terms of Casey Mice coming back,
- 1:24:30because I've also been starting to pick him up in fantasy circles too, because
- 1:24:36he has looked really stellar on the mound. But I think, as we've
- 1:24:42discussed with pictures in general for card collecting and have even kind of preached with
- 1:24:47pictures in terms of dynasty and fantasy terms, that like, you've got to
- 1:24:53be pretty sober about your assessments with pictures, just knowing how quickly can all
- 1:24:58unravel. But kind of had to give Casey Mais a quick shout out because
- 1:25:01Yeah, you go to his sports card investor page and it's a pretty straight
- 1:25:05hockey stick up over the past month as people have been buying back in,
- 1:25:10Yeah, you're right, and it's it's just one of those that's that's where
- 1:25:14the hobby can kind of go crazy, is you know, looking at some
- 1:25:18of Keathy MAI's his first autos, like back in February, we're talking like
- 1:25:23twenty dollars cards, and you know, it's crazy our first overall pick.
- 1:25:28Yeah, and I think that's part of what the first overall pick going into
- 1:25:30that is driving. But now some of those you know, PSA tens and
- 1:25:34stuff like that, you're you're talking maybe one hundred bucks that's going out there,
- 1:25:38or actually one of them sold for almost two hundred, Like it's just
- 1:25:41you know, is I think it's partially that pedigree plays a big factor on
- 1:25:45some of these guys that they show that they might actually be realizing that benefit.
- 1:25:49Like I think collectors like want to jump back in really quickly. I
- 1:25:54think that this actually brings a lot of the things that we've talked about tonight
- 1:25:58together. It's just like pictures not a great investment from a card perspective,
- 1:26:01performance and pedigree really can drive the prices up. And so you look at
- 1:26:06myze right now, and if his cards do continue to do what they're doing,
- 1:26:11a point is a hockey stick right now, Like if he keeps pitching
- 1:26:13well, and I don't, I'm not terribly excited from a fantasy perspective,
- 1:26:17I just he still hasn't really shown to me that he's he's fully back or
- 1:26:23who he needs to be. But if the hockey sip keeps going up.
- 1:26:26He has another two three starts where he give up one or no runs.
- 1:26:30Like the prices are gonna are gonna climb pretty substantially for myz And he's really
- 1:26:34from a card perspective, just fluttered for years. Just the value hasn't been
- 1:26:40there. It seems like it should be, should be, should be,
- 1:26:43Like this is probably the time to sell on something like that, because again,
- 1:26:45pitchers just don't hold their value. So when it spikes, you got
- 1:26:48it, you gotta go. So I think you both I have both in
- 1:26:51this podcast in a few minutes here, and get off and go start throwing
- 1:26:55boxes, yeah, and find out what we got. Yeah. And I
- 1:27:00think this will be a little helpful, you know, if you're just getting
- 1:27:02into card collecting or looking you know, how to maybe do some flipping.
- 1:27:08That what you've heard in terms of like how we've evaluated these players you can
- 1:27:12keep in mind as the rest of the season goes on, because and especially
- 1:27:15with Mace, this is a great, you know example of it doesn't take
- 1:27:18more than just one or two hot performances or really stand up performances for the
- 1:27:26market to move on these players. That people snatch up stuff pretty quickly on
- 1:27:30eBay once players show like something that makes them a little bit collectible, and
- 1:27:34you got to be able to move and jump on those markets when we can.
- 1:27:40So hopefully that can help everybody out there in the future in terms of
- 1:27:44looking to invest in certain players and know when to sort back through your boxes.
- 1:27:50But yeah, with that, brew let's wrap it up for this week
- 1:27:53and remind people where they can find you. Yep, find me over on
