- 0:00Speaker 1: Craig Way and the producer Cameron Parker alongside. Glad to
- 0:02have you with us as well as we bring you
- 0:05the program up until five o'clock this afternoon. Coming up
- 0:08in a few minutes, we'll hear more from Longgrn's head
- 0:11football coach Steve Sarcasian from that final media availability of
- 0:16the week, the Thursday media zoom that he conducts with local,
- 0:21regional and national media. So that's coming up in a
- 0:24few moments where I've have some more conversation about that.
- 0:28As we mentioned baseball, it's getting underway. What a little
- 0:33over an hour from now, I guess it is will
- 0:34be Yankees and Guardians Game three. The series has shifted
- 0:40to Cleveland in the ALCS and must win time for
- 0:44the Guardians. If they don't, they falled behind three to nothing.
- 0:46Yet it has only happened one time in Major League
- 0:48Baseball history that a team came back from a three
- 0:51to zero deficit to win a series.
- 0:54Speaker 2: And we know what that was. That was twenty More
- 0:56was twenty years ago.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Boston Red Sox down three games to none and looking
- 1:01to be swept late in Game four when a stolen
- 1:07base by an unheralded Red Sox player flipped the script,
- 1:11turned the.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Tide, and they rallied back to win.
- 1:13Speaker 1: That unheralded player was Dave Roberts, and won that game
- 1:17went on when the next three won the ALCS over
- 1:20the Yankees, and then ended the eighty six year curse
- 1:25by winning the World Series that year in four straight
- 1:30over the same Lois Cardinals. It's the same Dave Roberts
- 1:33who's now the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who
- 1:36last night took Game three of the NLCS of the
- 1:39New York Mets eight to nothing.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I saw that thing on the carl this one and.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Said, Mets second worst shutout loss in postseason history, eight
- 1:48to nothing. The worst one happened three days prior to
- 1:51nine to nothing in Game one. But Game four and
- 1:56the Mets do have Canana on the mound to night.
- 1:59The Dodgers try to cat with Yamamoto, and so we'll
- 2:03see how that goes. That's Game four of that series
- 2:06that's in New York tonight. Game five will be tomorrow
- 2:09afternoon in New York, and then if there is a
- 2:12Game six, and if there is a Game seven, both
- 2:15of those games would be back in Los Angeles at
- 2:17Dodger Stadium. All right, remember, yes, it was just yesterday.
- 2:21I guess it was the thing when I told you, Cameron,
- 2:24we were going over playoff projections, and I said, you know,
- 2:30here's here's the playoff projections from ESPN add some, and
- 2:34then the Athletic had some. And the guy who does
- 2:36them for the Athletic when we were talking about his yesterday,
- 2:39Scott Doctorman, and we went over his playoff projections. And
- 2:45remember how I kind of joked a little bit and said, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 2:50we're not talking about bowl projects. It's less I got
- 2:52bowl projections for you. But it folds in to the
- 2:56whole playoff thing as well. So that's why it's that's
- 2:58why it's pertinent. Okay, he did this with Stuart Mandel
- 3:04and a couple of things to keep in mind about
- 3:07these playoffs, because I've also been asked about the possibility
- 3:10of where the long runs might play in the playoffs,
- 3:13say in a quarterfinal. Well, here's some particulars to know
- 3:16about all this. Of course, the Playoff Selection Committee ranks
- 3:21the top twenty five teams in order, and the twelve
- 3:25team playoff field will consist of the five highest ranked
- 3:31conference champions and seven at large teams. The top four
- 3:37conference champions earn a first round by now you've heard
- 3:41me say this, you've heard say this that if you're
- 3:44in one of those powerfour leagues, you're going to get
- 3:46a buy few in the league. That's not official, but
- 3:51is presumptive because the powerfour conferences are going to have
- 3:58better resumes than they G five. The G five would
- 4:01have to be unbeaten, and it'd have to be a
- 4:03conference champion, it had kind of stumbled and bubbled along
- 4:06and found a way despite losing maybe three or even
- 4:08four games and won the conference championship. That would be
- 4:11the only way you could upset that apple card. So
- 4:13pretty much you can feel pretty safe in saying if
- 4:16you are the champion of the ACC, the Big Ten,
- 4:20the Big twelve, or the SEC, you're going to get
- 4:24a buy in the first round. And then the fifth
- 4:28highest ranked conference champion, which would be a G five
- 4:31at that point, would make the playoff. Even if they
- 4:35were say rated twenty first in the College Football Playoff rankings,
- 4:39they would be slotted in at the number twelve spot.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So then.
- 4:47Speaker 1: The fifth champion and the seven at large teams would
- 4:50compete on four campuses December twentieth and twenty. First, there's
- 4:53one Friday game and then three on Saturday, and the
- 4:56Seeds five through eight will host the Seeds nine through
- 4:59twelve those are the ones on home sites. Then you
- 5:02have four bowl games will host the quarterfinals, New Year's even,
- 5:07the Fiesta and January first for the Peach, the Rose,
- 5:11and the Sugar, while the Orange Bowl and the Cotton
- 5:14Bowl would host the summi finals on January ninth and tenth, respectively,
- 5:17and the championship gain January twentieth in Atlanta. Now, the
- 5:22playoff is, as they point out, one component of the postseason.
- 5:26The other system consists of thirty four bowls with locations
- 5:29ranging from the Bahamas to Boise, Idaho. The Power Conferences
- 5:34have deals with bowls for its non playoff teams, while
- 5:37the Group of Five conferences have a mix of bowl
- 5:39contracts and ESPN events marking making the matchups. So here's
- 5:44what they've got right now. We mentioned these playoff projections
- 5:49yesterday and right now. If it was just going on
- 5:52it right now, Texas would be the one seed as
- 5:58the SEC champion, Ohio State would be the two seed,
- 6:02Miami would be the three seed. And Iowa State winning
- 6:06the Big Twelve would be the four seed. According to
- 6:09the Athletic, the five seed would be Oregon. Remember, Oregon
- 6:15beat Ohio State, but they're expecting Ohio State maybe to
- 6:20beat Oregon in a rematch in the Big Ten championship.
- 6:23So remember we're talking about after the conference championship games.
- 6:26So that's why they're projecting that Oregon would be the
- 6:30five seed, Penn State would be the sixth, Georgia would
- 6:32be the seven, Clemson would be the eight. So what
- 6:36you would have would be first round playoff matchups in
- 6:40State College Pennsylvania between the sixth seed Penn State and
- 6:43the eleven seed they project LSU.
- 6:47Speaker 2: That would be on December twentieth.
- 6:48Speaker 1: They're saying on December twenty first in Clemson, South Carolina,
- 6:51you'd have an eight to nine matchup of Clemson the
- 6:54eight seed in Alabama the nine seed in Eugene, Oregon.
- 6:57On December twenty first, a five versus twelve matchup Oregon
- 7:01Boise State that would bring a rematch of their big high.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Scoring affair early this season.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And also on December twenty first in Athens, seven seed
- 7:10Georgia hosting the ten seed Notre Dame.
- 7:13Speaker 2: That's where that is.
- 7:15Speaker 1: So you'd have four winners come out of that, and
- 7:18then you would get to what they are projecting would
- 7:21be these matchups. On New Year's Eve, December thirty first,
- 7:24in Glendale, Arizona, you'd have the four seed Iowa State
- 7:30against the Oregon Boise State winner. In the Rose Bowl,
- 7:34you would have the two seed Ohio State against the
- 7:36Georgia Notre Dame winner. In Miami, you would have or
- 7:42excuse me, yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 2: In what did I miss? Miami playing their quarterfinal.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Well, they've got Texas against the Clemson. Oh here it
- 7:54is in Atlanta on January first in the Peach Bowl
- 7:58Miami the three seedgainst the Penn State LSU winner, and
- 8:01they have the Long Horns in New Orleans on January
- 8:04first in the Sugar Bowl. Now I know some early
- 8:08projections and magazines and stuff had Texas playing in the
- 8:10Peach Bowl, and it was theorized the possibility of Texas
- 8:15playing three times in five weeks in Atlanta SEC Championship,
- 8:20a quarterfinal in the Peach Bowl, and if they advanced
- 8:22all the way to the National Championship, then playing in
- 8:26Atlanta where the site is for the National championship game.
- 8:29But lately, not only these projections from the Athletic but
- 8:33also ESPN, CBS, and a couple others. All point all
- 8:37signs are pointing to New Orleans. If Texas wins out
- 8:41and wins the SEC, that they would indeed wind up
- 8:44in New Orleans playing the winner of Clemson in Alabama.
- 8:47How about that for a quarterfinal Texas against either Clemson Alabama,
- 8:51and then you would get to the semifinals. One of
- 8:56those would be in Miami quarterfinal win against quarterfinal winner,
- 9:01and the other one would be in Arlington in the
- 9:03Cotton Bowl. The one in Miami be the Orange Bowl.
- 9:06And according if its seeded out where the higher seeds
- 9:09would win, you'd have the one seed against the four seed.
- 9:12You'd have a Texas Iowa State semifinal in the Cotton Bowl,
- 9:17and you'd have an Ohio State Miami semifinal in the
- 9:21Orange Bowl. And then of course the winners advanced the
- 9:23national championship in Atlanta on January twentieth. So that's where
- 9:28it is where their projections are. Texas to win the SEC,
- 9:32Ohio State to win the Big Ten, Miami to win
- 9:35the ACC. Iowa stated the Big twelve earning first round
- 9:38bys Boise State from the Mountain West, the fifth conference
- 9:41champion seed a twelfth. The at large teams qualifying in
- 9:45order are Oregon, Penn State, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama, Notre Dame
- 9:49in LSU. That'd be pretty exciting stuff. I mean, it's
- 9:53the kind of stuff we've been talking about for some time,
- 9:55the possibility of these big time matchups in a playoff.
- 10:00And I will tell you this, for my money, I'm
- 10:04okay with the thing going to sixteen and eliminating the
- 10:07buys starting next year.
- 10:10Speaker 2: If they do that, I'd be okay with that as well.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I've always been a more is more guide when it
- 10:14came to the playoff, but this is a great improvement
- 10:17over the four, which was in great improvement over the two,
- 10:19which was an improvement over just the polls picking it.
- 10:22It has gradually gotten to that point and now we're
- 10:25going to get to a twelve team playoff coming up
- 10:27a few weeks. The long run, certainly hope to be a.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Part of that.
- 10:30Speaker 1: To do that, they need to stay on course. They
- 10:34need to stay on track, which would mean beating a
- 10:36really good Georgia team on Saturday night in Austin, we'll
- 10:38hear more from head coach Steve Sarkeishan coming up on
- 10:41sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeart
