- 0:08Our number 2 Miller and Cond in Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:11Trent and Con with you until 2. Trent and Ken with you until 2.
- 0:15You're Ken. I am Trent's plays of the day
- 0:2015125 ish. Bill Seals on Iowa State right
- 0:26now. Scott Dachman was in Chicago for
- 0:29the Big 10 tournament. He joins the program.
- 0:31Doc, Trent and Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 0:33How are you? You know, I'm pretty beat up.
- 0:36It's been a long couple of weeks from the week in Indianapolis
- 0:39and almost a full week in Chicago for the Big 10
- 0:42tournament. And now I this week I'm going to
- 0:45be like a lot of America and just watch it from my own home.
- 0:49Yeah, you can't beat that. No doubt about.
- 0:50Well, let's go back to Chicago. We saw Purdue in Michigan.
- 0:54A really good final is Purdue prevails.
- 0:57This was a team that I don't think many people felt real
- 0:59confident about heading into the NCAA Tournament that for
- 1:03whatever reason, Purdue was, you know what, they were a preseason
- 1:06favorite, one of the teams that a lot of people identified this
- 1:09is going to be their year, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:11Did not look good, but all of a sudden turned it around.
- 1:14What did Painter say or what did you see?
- 1:16What was behind Purdue getting back up on top and cutting down
- 1:19the Nets in Chicago? They're just very efficient.
- 1:23We saw it over the the span of the four day tournament that
- 1:28every time, I mean, Purdue has, you know, one of the most
- 1:31veteran teams in the country. I mean, two years ago they were
- 1:34in the national title game. You know, this year, as you
- 1:37said, they don't, they're the preseason #1 we have Braden
- 1:41Smith who's one assist shy of tying Bobby Hurley's all time
- 1:44record that these guys have been around and they know how to kind
- 1:49of turn it on. But over the last, you know, 13,
- 1:53I think regular season games, there were six and seven.
- 1:55And you just kind of wondered, are they running in neutral here
- 2:00or is it more of a matter of they're playing a lot of good
- 2:02teams and if they're just splitting these games and and
- 2:05there's a little bit of both there.
- 2:06But once they got to Chicago, you saw kind of that, you know,
- 2:10Purdue return. Do you know what they played?
- 2:14Northwestern, who's a pretty good, bad team.
- 2:19Well put. Yeah, they they.
- 2:21They've actually, you know, they got a good, you know, really
- 2:24good player, Mark Nellie and and they're better than their
- 2:26record. But you know, Purdue played
- 2:28well. And then then they really turn
- 2:30it on when they played Nebraska, you know, UCLA was banged up.
- 2:33And then when you get to that final and everybody's kind of
- 2:36sore, you just kind of wonder what efforts going to be there
- 2:39in the Michigan. I didn't really see a a spirited
- 2:43effort throughout. I thought, you know, Wisconsin,
- 2:46they had it under control and nearly got beat in Ohio State.
- 2:51You know, they only won by three.
- 2:53And then then of course, in the final, I don't know, they just
- 2:56didn't quite match Purdue. But Purdue is a, a team that
- 2:59that's more than capable of of winning all the way into the
- 3:04second weekend and and potentially the third.
- 3:06But I just don't know if they have the the the score that can
- 3:11really take him over the top. We saw Wisconsin give them
- 3:14another game. Of course, they handed them
- 3:15their first regular season lost the Wolverines.
- 3:18Wisconsin did way back in Ann Arbor a couple of months ago.
- 3:21This Wisconsin team and it's kind of Jekyll and high the
- 3:23times for them. They have some head scratching
- 3:26losses in there. But when they're going in the
- 3:27way that those two guards can get downhill with Boyd and both
- 3:30Blackwell, they're incredibly difficult.
- 3:32If you're looking at that next tier, a Big 10 team, would it be
- 3:36Wisconsin or is there somebody else that caught your eye that
- 3:39could make a deep run, maybe get to an?
- 3:42There, there are two teams that I probably am a little more
- 3:44confident in than a few of the teams above that that they can
- 3:47get, you know, Sweet 16 and then see what happens.
- 3:51And, and I would say Wisconsin is certainly at the top of the
- 3:54list that they have really played well the last month,
- 3:58month and 1/2. As you mentioned, you know, they
- 4:00they need Michigan and then you know what was right there with
- 4:04them the other day and then maybe could have been should
- 4:06have beaten Michigan in in the semifinals there.
- 4:10I mean last second three by Lindenberg is what kept them
- 4:13out. But but the way that they
- 4:15performed and you know, they beaten they won at Purdue, they
- 4:18beat Illinois in overtime. You know, they they really
- 4:22looked good. Michigan State and Illinois
- 4:24during the regular season, I really like the way they're
- 4:27playing. And of course, if if rap Austin
- 4:30rap hits five straight 3 pointers again against anybody,
- 4:33you know that they may not only be in the Sweet 16, they might
- 4:36be able to upset their way and it'll be on that.
- 4:39But and the other one is UCLA and that's going to be help
- 4:42dependent. But the way that the Bruins were
- 4:46playing, I I would not rule them out beating Nukon, especially if
- 4:50Donovan Bent is playing. And then in Michigan State again
- 4:53in the Sweet 16, I think that they could beat Michigan State
- 4:56again and with Duke and its injuries it it wouldn't be far
- 5:01fetched to think that they could somehow finagle that.
- 5:04Unless you and I of course goes to lead A.
- 5:07Yeah, it wouldn't be bad either, Doc UCLAI got to chuckle out of
- 5:12seeing them getting shipped east and if they get to the second
- 5:15weekend, have to go E again because Mick Cronin, boy, is he
- 5:18cranky. Doc, you are no shrinking Violet
- 5:22when it comes to talking with coaches.
- 5:25We've seen in the past that you're certainly not going to
- 5:27back down and you're willing to ask tough questions.
- 5:30But what do you go into a place like that?
- 5:31It's not like he covered Mick Cronin, you know, on a weekly
- 5:34basis or even sometimes a yearly basis.
- 5:37What is it like for you as a reporter?
- 5:38What do you know, this guy's going to be on edge.
- 5:40Is it, hey, I got to make sure my question is absolutely lock
- 5:44stock ready to go. Is it different when you go in
- 5:47with somebody that is like Mick Cronin?
- 5:50Yeah, and it depends on the situation because if he loses or
- 5:54if he's cranky, then, you know, you probably need to be more
- 5:57direct. You can't, you know, kind of
- 5:58leave it open-ended because you'll take the one where he
- 6:01reminds me a lot of Beau Ryan that way.
- 6:04And Beau would, if he wanted to be a condescending, you know
- 6:08what he could be. And he was.
- 6:10And he was to me. And it really irritated me.
- 6:13I'll say it in other words, too, but but you know, he he's Bo was
- 6:18that way. And and I think Mick Cronin is
- 6:20too, just kind of an edgy guy. He likes to give it back to
- 6:23people, but he's got a, you know, kind of a chronic
- 6:26complainer. But I had a side interview with
- 6:28him because I did a story about the scheduling year 2 of, of Big
- 6:3210 basketball and what they're looking at going forward in
- 6:35certain areas. And I, I had him on the side for
- 6:38a good 10 minutes. And I thought he was, he was
- 6:40awesome. I mean, you know, some of the
- 6:42things he talked about, you know, he was like, you know,
- 6:44first of all, they got to blow up college basketball.
- 6:47I don't think that's going to happen, especially now that
- 6:49you're in the Big 10, but you know, just some of the other
- 6:52aspects of, you know, travel and, and because they were one
- 6:56in six in the Big 10 when they traveled east and, you know, and
- 7:00they won two games in the tournament.
- 7:01So that that tripled their number basically.
- 7:04But but they, you know, but he's also like, you know what though?
- 7:08We we played good teams and they beat us, you know, there.
- 7:11And so I think he's, you know, he can be a pain.
- 7:15You do have to be direct a lot of times.
- 7:17I'll write those out rather than just kind of RIP it, RIP it.
- 7:20But whereas Matt Painter is is one of the easiest guys to talk
- 7:24to in the world and, and if you ask him a question, he kind of
- 7:27knows where you're going with it.
- 7:29What did you what was your take away from that piece talk of the
- 7:32people of of the travel mean you mentioned Cronin going east,
- 7:34kind of like ferrets going West, similar struggles.
- 7:38What can be done? Doc, what was your take away
- 7:40from that piece as you put it together?
- 7:43Yeah, there are a lot of different ideas that they're
- 7:45floating around and, and some of it in my own, but also some of
- 7:49theirs that they speculated is moving potentially more Big 10
- 7:53games into December. You know when these teams,
- 7:56especially the ones that are on quarters, they get done in
- 7:59around December 12th and then they go back to school January
- 8:025th. And that just seems to be a
- 8:04really big opening that they can move a few more Big 10 games in
- 8:09for some of these teams that that's one, there will be more 1
- 8:13offs in in February like we saw with Duke, Michigan and
- 8:17Virginia, Ohio State, they, they like the way that's being set up
- 8:21scheduling wise and and ratings wise.
- 8:24So you're going to see more of that too.
- 8:27And you know, it's just, but they're also, they know they got
- 8:31kind of a compact calendar and next year they go to 32 games
- 8:34down there, like 31 in the regular season, they're going to
- 8:3632. So they got some things to
- 8:38juggle. And then, you know, also, I, I
- 8:40hadn't focused a lot on the TV draft, but because I brought up,
- 8:46you know, Peacock and all that and the the three networks have
- 8:4939 games combined among them each draft 13 and then the rest
- 8:54go to, you know, Big 10 network and kind of get moved around.
- 8:57But but think things like a Purdue and then, you know,
- 9:01Purdue, Indiana, Where does it go?
- 9:03Well, it's going to end up in that draft.
- 9:05And, and if they want to move games into December, they're
- 9:08going up against the NFL, they're going up against college
- 9:11football. And all of the coaches I talked
- 9:14to, the West Coast ones were just really mixed and what they
- 9:17wanted because like Danny Sprinkle from from Washington's,
- 9:22like I love going to these environments.
- 9:24I want to go to them when the students are there and you know,
- 9:27and Eric Muscle like I want to have a four-game road trip or A5
- 9:31game road trip, you know, to because these are just too far
- 9:34for us and but none of them can agree on it.
- 9:36So we'll we'll see what this offseason brings.
- 9:39But it was certainly a fascinating look for me and and
- 9:42discussion with all of them because they had such incredibly
- 9:45different idea. Yeah, the muscleman thing,
- 9:47talking about a three or even A5 game road trip, just going out
- 9:50there and kind of knocking a bunch out at a time.
- 9:52I, I think in a way that could make a whole lot of sense.
- 9:55We know that the Midwest and East Coast schools, when they go
- 9:57out West, they play 2 games out there.
- 10:00What other thing that you mentioned in the piece is
- 10:02college basketball as a whole of expanding thing?
- 10:05And there's been a lot of talk after the buzz that the Duke
- 10:07Michigan game got, we go back to Chris Street's last game.
- 10:10That was a January game that was played with Iowan Duke.
- 10:13And certainly not even the kind of headliner that you had those
- 10:15CBS had the coverage of that one.
- 10:17Is there a path to make something like that happening,
- 10:20DACA a path that you get both the people involved with all the
- 10:23conferences, but also it's got to be a money maker, right?
- 10:26For the people outside that we are going to see more of these
- 10:28one off non conference games. For sure there will be and, and,
- 10:32and Brad Taylor, who who schedules basketball, said there
- 10:35will be more of those one offs because they do they generate a
- 10:39lot of interest. And, and I think so at that time
- 10:41of year, and I think this is maybe a little more my view that
- 10:45as opposed to anything else. It's, it's like, why not move,
- 10:49you know, as many as six Big 10 games before January, You know,
- 10:54whether it's maybe even 2IN in in November, if we're going to
- 10:57start the first week of November, then why have the, why
- 11:01you have to wait practically 2 months before you get really
- 11:03into the season? The, the other thing and to me,
- 11:06I think college basketball is missing its opportunity big time
- 11:10Feast week has been fun and great, but it's always
- 11:14overlooked because it's college football rivalry weekend.
- 11:16Everybody's talking about the CFP rankings and OK, great,
- 11:20there's this really awesome game out in Maui.
- 11:22But you know that So what if they were to move that to the
- 11:26last week of January or the first week of February when
- 11:29college football is done and the NFL is largely done except for
- 11:32the Super Bowl. I mean, I think Can you imagine
- 11:36the week of Iowa State's going to play Kentucky tonight in
- 11:39Vegas and, and it's an 8 game tournament and they have NIL.
- 11:42It breaks up the season. And then when you talk about 1
- 11:45offs, that would be a perfect time to incorporate some of
- 11:48these rivalry games that sometimes get shoehorned in
- 11:51December. Not necessarily the Seihawk
- 11:53because that's kind of been historic, but let's say Kansas,
- 11:57Missouri play it like the third week of February or something
- 12:00like that. I, I think that there's a lot of
- 12:03opportunity if they look at it like a blank canvas and start
- 12:07plugging in the dots, I think they would do a lot better than
- 12:09just saying, well, we always did it this way and and let's keep
- 12:12it this way. Yeah, the weekend between the
- 12:14the NFL championship weekend and the Super Bowl when there's
- 12:17nothing going on used to be the spot reserved for the Pro Bowl
- 12:20that nobody cares about anymore at dock.
- 12:22That's a home run. That's a home run that would
- 12:24bring eyeballs means that that we're starving for content that
- 12:28weekend. What do you think about the
- 12:29Hawks chances that get Clemson? Clemson without one of their
- 12:33better players of blue is 6 10 Kid blew his knee out in the ACC
- 12:37tournament early in the tournament.
- 12:39Your thoughts on the Hawks is they get the 8-9 matchup?
- 12:44I, I mean, I think this is what you kind of expected was an 8-9
- 12:48game. And I think they're, they're
- 12:49they've got an opponent that's that's pretty largely pretty
- 12:53deep, pretty balanced, but no real superstars.
- 12:57Brad Brownell. It's it's an interesting every
- 13:00time they play against Brad Brownell with with Clemson, I
- 13:05always think back to when Gary Barda and Fred Mims interviewed
- 13:09him for the job when Fred McCaffrey got it.
- 13:11You know, they because I met them at the airport and they
- 13:15were going there and he was at Wright State.
- 13:18But you know, overall, I, I mean, this is a team that's,
- 13:21it's a pretty good defense, a suspect offense.
- 13:25You know, they're not real good from three.
- 13:27They don't really they're not real good when it comes to, you
- 13:30know, assists. I mean, but that said, you know,
- 13:33they they are very balanced and tough and you know, they're in
- 13:37the lead 8 two years ago. So this was in in for the last
- 13:41what, 3 or 4 years. They've had the second most wins
- 13:43in the ACC. So you've got a veteran coach,
- 13:46you've got a deep team, they're going to cause some problems.
- 13:49But I think for Iowa, this might have been as good of a matchup
- 13:52as you're going to get in the first round and it being an 8-9
- 13:55game. So I, I think I like Iowa's
- 13:57chances, but I'm they're not the type that I would go run to the
- 14:01casino and bet on right away. Bennett Sturtz, you need to have
- 14:05one of those monster performances out of him and then
- 14:07likely Florida in the next round.
- 14:09That's going to be a difficult one down there in Tampa.
- 14:12If they can find their way past Clemson, want to ask you about
- 14:14the women's side of things they'll be hosting.
- 14:16We found that out on Saturday. No surprise, they do finish as
- 14:19the number five overall seed after even the pull out loss to
- 14:23UCLA. Path is difficult.
- 14:25It's always difficult women's basketball, but you talk about a
- 14:28potential path. Feels like Iowa.
- 14:29The women got a pretty good draw overall, and if you're looking
- 14:32for one of those #1 seeds, it's crazy to say, but South Carolina
- 14:36might be the one you want to see in the lead 8.
- 14:39Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of tough matchups here and and I I
- 14:43think this this is an Iowa team that is is played really well
- 14:47this year, but they're they're a little built a little
- 14:49differently than some of the good teams they've had in the
- 14:51past. So, you know, you look at how
- 14:54they played against Michigan and you're thinking, OK, this team's
- 14:57got a chance to do something against UCLA and you're like,
- 14:59well, I don't even know if they'll get to the Sweet 16.
- 15:02I think, you know, having that home crowd is going to be a
- 15:04major factor. Playing Georgia could be a
- 15:07challenge because we saw them a couple of years ago.
- 15:10They're very physical, very athletic and created all kinds
- 15:14of problems for Iowa and Iowa pulled off the win and got moved
- 15:18through. But I think with, you know, and
- 15:22and plus Katie Abrahamson's from from Iowa, so.
- 15:26There's a good that that. Could be a more challenging
- 15:28matchup, but I think having them, I, I figured Saturday,
- 15:32Monday would be the layout for the Hawkeyes because they, they
- 15:35are such a prominent program on television and I'm sure ESPN
- 15:41wanted them on Monday night against it if they get an SEC
- 15:43team or, or even if it's Arizona State of Virginia, I mean,
- 15:47because they're playing here on Thursday night.
- 15:49So I, I think that they wanted Iowa in that prime time splat.
- 15:53And then then if, if Iowa can get past that second round game,
- 15:56which could be a challenge, then you've got to like their Sweet
- 15:5916 match up. I think TCU is a really good
- 16:02team and Washington obviously is too.
- 16:04But I think you feel like Iowa's got a 5050 chance there.
- 16:08And then South Carolina is is really good.
- 16:10But I would, if I was to say watch out for an 89 type of
- 16:14team, USC with Jazzy Davidson, they're the 9:00 and they would
- 16:19play South Carolina second if they get past Clemson.
- 16:23That's one of those teams where you're like, we really don't
- 16:25want to play them. I mean, because they've got some
- 16:29potential there. Good stuff doc.
- 16:30What are you writing about this week?
- 16:33Oh, man, I I'm kind of exhausted.
- 16:35All my brain power. I'm doing some doing some
- 16:38football writing still Purdue football.
- 16:42And I'm also, you know, kind of on, I don't know, I'm on just
- 16:47kind of bounce around duty when it comes to basketball right
- 16:50now, which is whatever the hot topic is of the day, I'm going
- 16:53to be on it. So that's that's kind of where I
- 16:55am right now. Good stuff, Doc.
- 16:56Thanks for joining us. Appreciate it.
- 16:57Have a great week. Scott Dockerman, thank you.
- 17:00Thanks for good. To talk to you, Scott Dockerman
- 17:02from The Athletic is we take a look at a number of topics with
- 17:05Doc. Bill Seals is next.
- 17:08He covers Iowa State. That's coming up.
- 17:10We'll talk to Bill about the Cyclones that gets set to head
- 17:13to Saint Louis. TJ was asked last night if
- 17:15they're busting or flying. He didn't know.
- 17:17I'm guessing he knows by now with the lack of charters, which
- 17:21was a story leading up to it. He wants to fly.
- 17:23I don't blame. Him, yes, absolutely.
- 17:25Well, and I mean, it's a quick phone call to Denny that he all
- 17:28bought. Well, he probably could do that
- 17:29too. They're gonna be OK.
- 17:31They'll be flying. I will put a Trent kind of
- 17:33guarantee behind that. One Yeah, I think that probably
- 17:36sealed it right there. Miller in Condon, Iowa Sports
- 17:38Radio Network. 125 Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio
- 17:47Network Trenton Ken with you until 2 off the bench coming up
- 17:52at 2:00. Lucas off today.
- 17:54He's sick. Sick today.
- 17:57Sick. What a terrible day to be sick.
- 18:00Yeah, I don't. You have to gut it out.
- 18:01I mean, some. It's a bracket.
- 18:02Come on, tough it out. Come on kid, let's go.
- 18:05Yeah, you know, they don't make them like they used.
- 18:07They really don't. They really don't the play by
- 18:11play voice of the Iowa Cubs will be here with with Sean.
- 18:15All right, let's get to Bill Seals cyclonereport.com part of
- 18:18on three media. He joins us.
- 18:21Bill, Trent and Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 18:23It's a good thing you get a media pass Bill Seals, because
- 18:26my God, those tickets, I can't imagine what it's how how tough
- 18:29a ticket it's going to be. But when you see some of the
- 18:32schools that are going to join the Cyclones in Saint Louis,
- 18:36particularly the ones that travel, obviously Kentucky,
- 18:38we've seen them here in Des Moines.
- 18:40Purdue's going to bring a ton of people.
- 18:41Missouri just down the road, Iowa State of five and a half
- 18:45hour drive. There's going to be some fan
- 18:47bases that are thinking they're going to be in the Enterprise
- 18:50Center, that either A, they're going to have to spend way more
- 18:53than they thought or made they maybe they're going to find a
- 18:55bar close by and just watch it. They're going to be a tough
- 18:58ticket. Bill Seals, good to talk to you.
- 18:59How are you? I'm doing well, guys.
- 19:02Appreciate you having me on. Yeah, it's going to be a tough
- 19:05one. I would say probably right up
- 19:07there with that semi final round in Kansas City with Iowa State,
- 19:13Arizona and Houston, Kansas. That was an expensive one too.
- 19:17But yeah, I mean, it's it's going to be quite the atmosphere
- 19:21down in Saint Louis. You know, at least I guess the
- 19:25good thing is from Iowa State's perspective that the pod that
- 19:28they're in just kind of got to deal with Kentucky.
- 19:32But then you've got those that would buy like the all session
- 19:35tickets as well to, to deal with that.
- 19:37But yeah, it, it, it'll be fun. And you know, The funny thing
- 19:42about this whole thing is, is that, you know, it's, it's not a
- 19:45given Kentucky's going to even move on to who knows what
- 19:49happened against Santa Clara because Kentucky's been wildly
- 19:53inconsistent this season. So I, I would think that could
- 19:57be, that would be an upset special on a lot of people.
- 20:00Less going into later this week. Game one, Tennessee State, first
- 20:05time in the tournament in a long time for this squad.
- 20:08They're 23 and 9 on the Ohio Valley.
- 20:11But boy, kind of dig it in here. Anything you look at and say,
- 20:14oh, maybe that could be tricky. This should be 1.
- 20:17The point spread tells us 24 1/2.
- 20:18It should be an Iowa State cruising victory.
- 20:21Anything jump out though to you from Tennessee State?
- 20:25Well, not not really. I mean this is a game again,
- 20:29Iowa State should be able to to handle this opponent that out of
- 20:34the Ohio Valley. You know, they do have what
- 20:37Nolan Smith. That's a big name a lot of
- 20:40people would remember the head coach of of the Tigers.
- 20:44So, you know, that they they do have a couple of guards that
- 20:48that Iowa State I'm I'm sure will be first and foremost on
- 20:52the, you know, the list of guys to try and take out of that
- 20:56game. Travis Harper the second Aaron
- 21:01Kerma, I think I'm going to pronounce that wrong, but Aaron
- 21:04Kerma, a couple of guards, they average a little over 31 point
- 21:09or 31 minutes a game now. Harper yeah, at 17.3, Kerma at
- 21:1617.6. So those are the 2 main guys.
- 21:19I think that Iowa State will have to contend with a couple of
- 21:23guards I think around in that like 6566 range.
- 21:27So but but then again, I mean, that's Iowa State strength right
- 21:31there there. Those guys are going to have to
- 21:33contend with Lipsy, with Torre. You know, Heisey's going to come
- 21:37off the bench and be a pest and and want to be I want to be up
- 21:41on on one of those guys. So yeah, again, I think it just
- 21:45plays in Iowa State strength and that this is a game I don't
- 21:48think that they should have too many problems with.
- 21:51I got one thing, if it is close, they're a good free throw
- 21:56shooting team. Boy, I do.
- 21:58That would get Ken going a little bit.
- 22:01Yeah, yeah. They, they, they, they do have
- 22:04that going for them, Trent. That's a good point.
- 22:06They're just a little under 77% from the charity stripe.
- 22:12So yeah, you're right in a in a close game, although you know,
- 22:15Iowa State shot it pretty well until the Arizona game down in
- 22:19Kansas City. They had that two of their best
- 22:21games at the stripe, I think in in recent memory, at least for
- 22:25me. And then I believe four of eight
- 22:27against Arizona. And you look at a game, the way
- 22:30it played out, you know, maybe free throws that this one could
- 22:33have played out a little differently.
- 22:35But yeah, I mean Iowa stated had been trending in the right
- 22:38direction there. What does Toure do after his
- 22:41offensive explosion on Friday night?
- 22:43Was great to see. He'd been a dark hole.
- 22:46You mean the ball's not going there was essentially, you know,
- 22:49they guard four guys on Iowa State when Iowa State was on the
- 22:52in the on offense. Didn't have to worry about
- 22:54Toure. But boy, it was really great to
- 22:56see. Couple of threes, couple of long
- 22:58threes and then goes inside. That little pull up jumper seems
- 23:01this confidence as high. He's always playing great
- 23:03defense and he played great defense in my opinion on both.
- 23:06The Bradley's shots are right at the end of the game there,
- 23:09including the game winner. How does Toure take this
- 23:11offensive production from Friday night and carry it forward?
- 23:16Well, I think he has to. It was a lot of fun to watch
- 23:19that play out too. By the way, He's a great, great
- 23:22young man. Everyone in the media just
- 23:25loves, loves the kid. And you could tell that the the,
- 23:29the confidence he hits his first shot and then all of a sudden,
- 23:33you know, Killian Tory is out there hunting jump shot.
- 23:36It's something that we hadn't seen in forever.
- 23:38He hadn't scored in double figures since February 1st.
- 23:41But game that Iowa State won against Kansas State, he hadn't
- 23:45even been in double figures. So I think it was a lot of fun
- 23:48And and, you know, all of a sudden, maybe opponents have to
- 23:51account for him a little bit. And that's going to be that's a
- 23:53huge deal. Because we saw when when he just
- 23:57when he didn't have the confidence, wasn't even looking
- 24:00to shoot, he'd get into the lane and he wouldn't even try and
- 24:03finish. He'd be just looking to Kick It
- 24:04Out. And that that means that other
- 24:07teams, maybe they've got to respect him a little more.
- 24:10And that is it the expense of of collapsing on Jefferson inside
- 24:15or, you know, devoting one guy to to face guarding Milan and
- 24:19and trying to take him out. So I think that's a huge, that's
- 24:23a positive sign for Iowa State going into a March Madness.
- 24:26You mentioned Milan and obviously getting him going in
- 24:29the fashion that he did in that game against Arizona.
- 24:31There been just those rough stretch.
- 24:33Even going back to the tech game, he was one to six from
- 24:35behind the arc. We've seen good moments,
- 24:37certainly against Arizona State, but it's been inconsistent.
- 24:40What can you do game in a game out?
- 24:42Just to no, we got to get him involved.
- 24:45We have to get him going because in order to make a run here, get
- 24:48to the second weekend, get to it Elite 8, you need good Milan
- 24:51Manchilovich. What kind of game plan you
- 24:52coming up for to maybe just get him comfortable right away in
- 24:55the games? Yeah, I agree.
- 24:57He said that got it, got to see some shots fall.
- 25:00I think early it it has a way of snowballing a little bit.
- 25:03If he is is take like like you mentioned the game he was one
- 25:08for six. He just didn't get off to a real
- 25:10good start and and just didn't really play much of a factor on
- 25:14the offensive end in that game. And I think they need to again
- 25:18they need to get him going early.
- 25:20Now he is a guy that as we saw against Arizona, he he shot Iowa
- 25:26State back into that game late in the first half.
- 25:29Your things were not looking good the last minute or two of
- 25:33that first half and he hits what 9 or 3 three pointers for 9
- 25:37points and like, I think it was the final 32 seconds of the half
- 25:41gets Iowa State back into that one gives them gives them, you
- 25:45know, a little jolt to confidence.
- 25:47And then we all saw what happened in that game down the
- 25:50stretch. He he keeps Iowa State nearly
- 25:53single handedly all you know, Jefferson had a nice game lips.
- 25:57He hit the big three. But gosh, it was Milan, I think
- 25:59that was keeping the cyclones in that game.
- 26:02So he he's someone that they've got to got to get big games
- 26:06from. And I I think also after what
- 26:09happened the Ole Miss game, I I talked to those guys about that
- 26:12on our zoom call yesterday. I think that's still fresh on
- 26:16the this is a veteran laden team and it's still fresh on their
- 26:19minds that how things played out that getting behind big early
- 26:24and and bowing out in the second round.
- 26:26And this is a team with big aspirations and and a lot of
- 26:29veterans that are are ready to breakthrough this year.
- 26:34A couple of minutes on the women, we'll get back to the
- 26:36men's tournament to pick your brain a little bit more on the
- 26:39Big 12 teams going forward. Iowa State, Boy, they get
- 26:42shipped out, don't they? They've got to go all the way
- 26:45out to stores. Is that right?
- 26:46My God, Get Syracuse in game one.
- 26:50And then if they get past Syracuse, here comes UConn.
- 26:55Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 26:55Bill Seals. Yeah, and that's not a favorable
- 27:00draw, although not surprising to be honest.
- 27:06I, I think everybody expected this Iowa State team was going
- 27:10to end up on that 8-9 line. I think it almost would have
- 27:14been more beneficial to try and get it, try and get a 10, play
- 27:19the seven. And I think Iowa State would
- 27:22would have had a great chance to win.
- 27:25Excuse me, a 10 / a seven game. And you get a little bit better
- 27:28drawn that second round. But yeah, I mean, talk about
- 27:31being thrown to, I'd say thrown to the wolves.
- 27:34They're they're they're going to probably get thrown to the
- 27:36Huskies. They're in the the second round,
- 27:38but you know, they've got to get past Syracuse first.
- 27:41That was one thing that the coach Finley said that you know
- 27:44that everybody wanted to talk about the possible second round
- 27:47match up against UConn. Well, you know, they've got to
- 27:50they've got to figure out Syracuse first and a team that
- 27:54they'll have some have some success in the ACC.
- 27:59Uche Izoje, the leading scorer for the Orange and she's it's
- 28:06going to be a fun matchup, but I think watching her what you
- 28:10know, she's almost averaging a double double inside a 63
- 28:14freshman center. I mean, her and Audie Crook
- 28:18match up. I think to to see those two,
- 28:21that is OJ at 15 1/2 and 9.4 points a game.
- 28:26So I think on paper this is a pretty tough match up.
- 28:29Iowa State's really got to contend with that, even to get
- 28:32to U Conn. Eight teams from the Big 12 get
- 28:35in on the women's side of things.
- 28:37Top seed TCU is a three West Virginia 4, but not the same
- 28:41kind of high end. Is it something just cyclical
- 28:43right now or something diving in deeper?
- 28:45Maybe nil the investment in women's basketball.
- 28:49Why do you think we've seen at least a small step back here out
- 28:51of the Big 12? Well, supposedly this is, you
- 28:56know what Brett, your mark said that he's the he's he loves
- 29:00women's basketball. He wants to invest in that.
- 29:04But yeah, I mean it there, there's no doubt about it.
- 29:06It's it's taken a little bit of a step back since Texas moved on
- 29:10to the SEC. You know, Oklahoma coach
- 29:14Baronchick that she has that has that had them rolling
- 29:17perennially. So I think they, they just
- 29:19haven't really replaced those teams that they lost, I think to
- 29:23the SEC and they're on a little bit of a dip right now, but
- 29:26they're I think there's some exciting teams to watch in the
- 29:30Big 12. But I, I think very top heavy
- 29:32you mentioned with TCU West Virginia, I think those two were
- 29:36the top teams in the in the conference.
- 29:39And then yeah, you kind of had what 3 through 7, three through
- 29:428. It seems like anybody in that
- 29:45mix could beat each other on a on a nightly basis.
- 29:49Back to the men's How many Big 12 teams make the Elite 8?
- 29:56Well, that's a, that's a good question.
- 30:01I, I think that they're, they're poised to do pretty well in the
- 30:06in this tournament. I wouldn't be surprised to see
- 30:10at least two make the final four.
- 30:12Arizona, Houston, well, and even even Iowa State, the Iowa
- 30:16State's kind of been a hot pick. A lot of those pundits
- 30:20yesterday, Jay Billis, Jay Williams, I think even Dick
- 30:24Vital had Iowa State going to the Final Four and the consensus
- 30:28out of those guys is they would lose again to Arizona.
- 30:31But gosh, wouldn't that be a a fun match watching the Final
- 30:35Four, those two going at it again.
- 30:37So I think again, you, you look at Arizona, you look at Iowa
- 30:40State, Houston, Texas Tech, that that's another one.
- 30:45I think even with Poppin being out, we'll, we'll see what
- 30:48Christian Anderson looks like with a little bit of rest coming
- 30:53off of that groin injury. But I think there's there's at
- 30:56least half of those teams in the Big Dance and the Big 12 I think
- 31:00have aspirations to get at least into that second weekend and,
- 31:04and who knows, going to the Final four from there.
- 31:07Never mentioned Kansas. Don't like The Jayhawks the way
- 31:10they're playing. They got pasted on Friday.
- 31:12Night yeah I just I I tell you what I didn't that was not a
- 31:17very encouraging look I think for them in in Kansas City they
- 31:22had the huge huge home advantage and you know Iowa State Arizona
- 31:27that ended up being the showcase and I think everybody slept
- 31:31through that second game Kansas never really was in it at.
- 31:35All Who are Jayhawk fans cheering for in the first game?
- 31:41Could you tell? I I heard that there were some
- 31:45that had that U of A chant going in the stands rooting for
- 31:50Arizona. But you know, I had my my son
- 31:53came down with me and he said that some of them he was around
- 31:57were rooting for Iowa State just because they kind of wanted that
- 32:00throwback, you know, big eight days final, but never ended up
- 32:05playing out that way. No, no kidding.
- 32:07All right, Well, when does your coverage start?
- 32:09Of course, the Iowa State place Friday.
- 32:10I'm guessing you'll have their open practice on Thursday, which
- 32:13is usually a great deal. I hope the NCAA still does that
- 32:16where they open up the arenas to to all fans.
- 32:19You want to come and watch the practice sessions?
- 32:21You're free to do so. Cost nothing to get in.
- 32:23I hope that's still the case. Do you know if it is Bill and
- 32:26when will your coverage start for the Iowa State as they make
- 32:30their way through the NCAA Tournament?
- 32:33Yeah, as far as I know that that practice session day is open to
- 32:38the public, so fans down there can get in, check it out.
- 32:42Always a good chance to get some autographs, I think for some
- 32:46young fans and and some of the players are always pretty
- 32:48accessible After that my my coverage, I'm planning on
- 32:53getting down there on Wednesday there there's usually a media, a
- 32:56quick media availability with TJ maybe get a player or two once
- 33:02they arrive at the hotel down there in Saint Louis, that'll be
- 33:05on Wednesday. So all plans are to start
- 33:10coverage up on on Wednesday. Then we'll have the open
- 33:14availability down there on Thursday and and off we go on on
- 33:18Friday afternoon. As I would say, flying.
- 33:21I know that that was still a question last night, how they're
- 33:23going to get to Saint Louis. Did they find a plane?
- 33:26You know, I, I was the one who asked TJ that question on the
- 33:29zoom call and, and I, I got the, I, I got the idea that this is,
- 33:34is 1 they're going to fly down to.
- 33:35I, I wondered maybe with the shortage and kind of what he had
- 33:39heard a couple 2-3 weeks ago, maybe if that would impact Iowa
- 33:43State. But it does sound like they're
- 33:44going to get a, a flight down there on, on Wednesday.
- 33:49Good stuff. Bill Seal.
- 33:50Cyclonereport.com Cyclone report.com part on three media
- 33:54slash rivals as he covers Iowa State Bill, thanks for jumping
- 33:57on. Appreciate it.
- 33:58Enjoy Saint Louis Bill Seals, thank you.
- 34:01I will do so guys. Mike, good to talk to you.
- 34:03It's right down the Avenue of the Americas.
- 34:05That's what they call it, right? The.
- 34:06Avenue of the Saints. Avenue of the Saints Ave.
- 34:08Americas is in New York I think. Is it never heard of that one,
- 34:12Maybe not Saint Paul to Saint Louis?
- 34:16Saint Paul to Saint Louis, that's the.
- 34:18Avenue of the. Straight through Hannibal, MO,
- 34:21You give Kansas a chance to do what?
- 34:23Just to get out of the first weekend?
- 34:25I don't. Well, to get out of the first
- 34:27weekend, sure, their path would be their 4-5 game of potential
- 34:31would be St. John's, assuming they knock off
- 34:34the Panthers. You're you're jump into
- 34:36assumptions over. There.
- 34:37Well, I you I learned it from you.
- 34:41Kansas, St. John's.
- 34:42I give Kansas no check. They got embarrassed on Friday
- 34:45night. That's a bad There's something I
- 34:47don't know. Self into it.
- 34:50He might be retiring, I'm wondering.
- 34:51Too, Trent, I've got the same thought as you do.
- 34:54He's had all the health problems lately, recently.
- 34:57And maybe this Darren Peterson thing was just.
- 34:59That's enough. Push it off.
- 35:01Yep, made a lot of money. Go enjoy whatever the rest of
- 35:04life is and not having to deal with.
- 35:07Kids and nil and agents and. Doesn't sound fun.
- 35:11Oh, you're well compensated. No, until.
- 35:13The the bank hit the the the check is the bank on the 15th
- 35:16and the. 1st, that's a lot of zeros.
- 35:17It's a lot of zeros. Houston.
- 35:22They're good. They're good, Arizona.
- 35:26You don't like them? I don't like their coach you.
- 35:28Know. And you don't think that they
- 35:29make it, you've got them out of the first weekend though, don't
- 35:32you? Yeah, yeah, that's an easy path
- 35:36for them. But then you don't have them in
- 35:37the Elite 8 because that would be the Arkansas.
- 35:39Match, that was, yeah, that's the one that I've identified.
- 35:43Not locked in stone, no. There'll be a lot of
- 35:46maturations. Thursday's a long ways away.
- 35:51You like to fill out a pool, no. You don't No, because it's all
- 35:56it's it's I don't, I know I don't like to your bracket's
- 35:58dead, like within the first hour of the tournament.
- 36:01And wait, why go through that? I just want to watch it all,
- 36:04watch it unfold. Do you like, by the way, I meant
- 36:05to ask you this early in the program.
- 36:07Well, now's a pretty good time since we're about to get to your
- 36:09plays of the day. Do you have an opinion at all
- 36:11Tuesday or Wednesday? No, not yet.
- 36:14Too early. Now, one thing that I've done
- 36:16historically, every single. Don't you like Miami of Ohio?
- 36:19I do, yeah. That was actually one of my
- 36:21first bets that I put in. I put in two bets, Miami of Ohio
- 36:24plus the seven and a half. I think it was last night
- 36:26they're. Getting.
- 36:27And. Can they?
- 36:28Can they went out right? Sure.
- 36:29Yeah, I do. I agree with you.
- 36:31And Louisville. I faded Louisville.
- 36:35You don't like them? Yes, those were the two that the
- 36:37first two bets succeed. They are a six seed.
- 36:40Louisville's banked up. That's a problem and just.
- 36:44South Florida the matchup. Yeah, South Florida's good.
- 36:47Watched them in The American a couple of times.
- 36:49I was. I was impressed by them.
- 36:50Yeah, they won a lot of games down the stretch.
- 36:52Levin seed that I definitely like pulling out that one.
- 36:56This is a great time though. That's phenomenal.
- 36:57And one thing I do back to the dating games, I just take the 16
- 37:01seeds. That's an underdog on the Bunny
- 37:03line. And just that's an automatic.
- 37:04Yeah, Regardless of who. Yeah.
- 37:06I mean try to handicap these awful teams.
- 37:09You take the points, you just bet them.
- 37:10Just bet money line usually get you know, plus one 15120
- 37:13whatever it is. I've done that and historically
- 37:16it's turned out to. Be a trend to watch all right,
- 37:19145 trends, plays of the day, circus sports sponsor those kind
- 37:22of feels like the calm before the storm.
- 37:24Oh, it is. My God.
- 37:26Now we got games, Tomorrow we do the date and games.
- 37:29And when the NIT starts tomorrow, it starts tomorrow.
- 37:32It does. And how many Valley teams went?
- 37:35I I started three, I think, Right.
- 37:37Is that what it was? I think it's three.
- 37:39You dug in deeper than I Oh, Trent, I'm all over the NIT.
- 37:42Illinois. I can't wait for the crown to be
- 37:44unveiled tonight. 4:30 We'll get to get the bracket for the
- 37:47crown. Digging into that full report
- 37:49tomorrow, that's what we'll start to show your thoughts on
- 37:51The Crown. That that's where we're going.
- 37:53I was excited because I bought a plane ticket to go follow Iowa
- 37:56last year in the Crown and then. Got the Huskers out there, your
- 37:59team. My Huskers, right?
- 38:00My Huskers? Are my Huskers going to win a
- 38:04game? What if they don't win?
- 38:06How hilarious. Oh my God, Trent, Can you
- 38:09imagine? Losing to Troy.
- 38:11And they've never in their history, in their history,
- 38:15they've never won a game. They're A4.
- 38:17Seed that you talk about adaptitude and it was one thing
- 38:20when Nebraska had or Northwestern had that for years
- 38:22and years and years, you could definitely understand that.
- 38:25Sure, Nebraska, Dan and he had some good teams.
- 38:29They had the Polish Rifleman. Yes, they had some good teams.
- 38:31Eric Piakowski, he was good player.
- 38:33Had Andre Woolrich for a year before he came to a scene too.
- 38:37And to never win a game, then to have this season and to lose
- 38:43Detroit, a team that recently beat them on the football field,
- 38:46on top of it. No, I don't remember.
- 38:48That Oh yeah, there's been a lot of those.
- 38:52Oh, that would leave a mark. Trench Plays of the Day, Next

- 39:24So coming up here this this week, here's what we've got
- 39:27tomorrow. We've got both of the games from
- 39:30Dayton likewise on Wednesday and then on Thursday it's wall to
- 39:35wall, wall to freaking wall courtesy of Westwood One.
- 39:39There'll be no local shows with the exception of the morning
- 39:41show on Thursday and again on Friday.
- 39:46So we're off, afternoon show is off and Westwood won.
- 39:49So if you can't be in front of ATV, if you're at work or
- 39:51whatever, keep it here as we will have you covered with a
- 39:55wrap around coverage of this tournament that are doing it
- 39:57like the way they used to do it. They're not lingering at a game
- 40:01when the action switches to this site, that's where they take
- 40:04you. So I do love that.
- 40:05I think it's great. And that's what we've got coming
- 40:08up here this week on Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3 KXNO.
- 40:13Jason Horowitz, I know he's always a big part of the studio.
- 40:16Is he? Yes, you'll hear.
- 40:18Kevin Coogler. He's part of Westwood Ones
- 40:19coverage. He does a great job.
- 40:21Really like what he does. Yeah, it's outstanding.
- 40:23And I know a lot of people. Maybe you're bouncing around,
- 40:25going from one spot to another. Maybe you're headed out
- 40:28somewhere to watch the games and flip on the radio here on KX and
- 40:31O. We'll have you covered with all
- 40:33of the action. I don't have much action
- 40:35tonight. No, I could understand that
- 40:37because there's not a lot of stuff in your wheelhouse.
- 40:40There's NBA and there's NHL and that's it.
- 40:42I am going to play the World Baseball Classic.
- 40:46This is the other semifinal. Correct.
- 40:49Italy against Venezuela. I'm going to lay it minus what,
- 40:5380? Trying to find a better price
- 40:56because that's not normally what I do but the Italian run.
- 41:01Comes to an end. Yeah, they had an activist.
- 41:03A heck of a World Baseball classic.
- 41:05Has this exceeded expectations? Oh, no doubt.
- 41:07Did you watch last night? No, I forgot about it.
- 41:10You did. You missed because it was.
- 41:11I heard it was thrilling. You know, Aaron Judges, you
- 41:14heard his comment after the I'm paraphrasing.
- 41:17He thinks that the crowd is more into this than they are World
- 41:21Series game. I can buy that.
- 41:23I can absolutely buy that. I definitely.
- 41:25Think at Yankee Stadium. They weren't into it last.
- 41:29Night. That's what I was told, That's
- 41:30what I heard. I was shocked.
- 41:33We mentioned my wife, not a huge baseball fan.
- 41:36She wasn't thralled last night. She was into it.
- 41:38She was watching a lot more than I anticipated.
- 41:40I figure she was a. Dominican Republic at all, at
- 41:43any point think that they're going to win this game?
- 41:45They had guys on, yeah, they had opportunities.
- 41:47And Mason Miller ran into a little bit of trouble.
- 41:50I think that also in the 9th inning that guy throws one O 2.
- 41:54Like, well, when he really crates up the summer, he'll be
- 41:56throwing one O 4. Any word on Suzuki who got hurt
- 41:59for? They sent him back.
- 42:01I know they did, but. Cubs are looking to get an eye
- 42:03on him. I guess.
- 42:06Brewers Division Bet. Oh, that was 30.
- 42:09Was he at 30 last year? I think he did.
- 42:11So just one player. You're just betting baseball
- 42:13tonight in. Venezuela, I there was nothing
- 42:15in the NBA because I have not well, I don't normally watch the
- 42:18NBA at all, but yeah, I think I'm going to play Venezuela on
- 42:21the money line and. When will the final be?
- 42:23Tomorrow. Perfect.
- 42:24Yeah, on Saint Patrick's Day, US, Venezuela, likely, probably
- 42:31what we're going to see. Italy got them before.
- 42:35Yeah, I watched the Wild and the Leafs last night.
- 42:40Yeah, I know. I forgot all about the baseball.
- 42:42Never even dawned on me. I I wish I would have, wish I
- 42:45would have known. All right, that's going to do it
- 42:47for us coming up next off the bench.
- 42:50They'll be here until 5:00. Tom Kegger's going to join us
- 42:53tomorrow. He's going to be flying on
- 42:55Wednesday, so we'll get Tom tomorrow and do some Big 12
- 42:57stuff and maybe a little stuff, something on that World Baseball
- 43:00Classic. You in.
- 43:02Yes, I am absolutely in. Matt Snyder will join us at
- 43:051:30. Awesome.
- 43:05Good stuff. All right, that's going to join
- 43:07us. Appreciate.
- 43:07That's going to do it for us. Rather appreciate you joining us
- 43:11as Miller and Condon talk sports with you every Monday through
- 43:14Friday from noon until 2 right here on the Iowa Sports Radio
