  Tallis D'souza grew up in a favela in Rio.

  When he was a boy, police raided his home looking for his uncle,

  and he came close to losing his life.

  His family left everything there and moved to Cape Cod, MA, with

  almost nothing. He didn't speak English, so he

  took a job at McDonald's, not for the money, but to practice

  the language one order at a time.

  And then he moved to Wendy's and worked his way into management.

  He wasn't waiting for a break. He was working the counter and

  going to Community College at the same time.

  His bosses didn't hand him a dream.

  They watched him earn one. They saw a young man grind

  through a shift and then drive to class.

  And so the three franchise owners decided to pay his

  tuition to Community College. One of them, Osama, said he only

  wanted to encourage someone who is already working hard against

  long odds. D'souza's own effort got him the

  rest of the way. And this summer, that way led to

  Yale a full scholarship from a favela to a fast food counter to

  one of the most. Storied universities.

  In the world, D'souza said, the thing that changed him wasn't

  the money, the gift. It was being seen.

  When his bosses looked at a kid behind the Winnie's counter and

  saw somebody worth investing in, it rewrote what he believed was

  possible. They didn't see him because he
