- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Hello, welcome back to Slander and Slay.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: I am your co-host, Tracy Sandler, here on Buzzer, and I am with the lovely Nikki Kay, the sleigh staff of Slander and Slay.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, we love it.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: We're ready to slay the day.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: And another week where the news just keeps to continue to hit us.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: It is an unbelievable week of news, and not in a good way, like at all in the sports world.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: There's all kinds of things going on.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: But the first thing that we have to share that's really just upsetting because she was such a wonderful, wonderful person is Dolly Parton has passed away.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And I don't know about you, Nikki.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I took that hard.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: It I think she's just been such a staple and a beacon of feminine empowerment and a kind soul who has impacted so many talents across genres, right?
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: You're not just talking music, you're talking entertainment athletes who it were impacted by her music, people uh of all walks of life.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: And um, what an amazing soul.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Amazing, and she did so much for the world and for the community at large.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: So that was that was a very that was a very tough one.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And I know on Fangirl Sports Network, we posted when she came out and performed nine to five in the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders costume.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: I think it was it was a halftime of I want to say a Thanksgiving game.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I could be wrong on the details, but it was so amazing.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And there she was like in her 70s, like out, and I was like, that's you know what?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: We should all be in that good of just shape to be able to go out that and do that in our late 70s.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Well, and for me, you know, passing at 80, she did not carry herself like someone who had had lived that many years, right?
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: She was so useful, and uh, I think she really just blazed a trail for so many women everywhere.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Um, and yeah, just radiant.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: So uh all the tributes are gonna continue to pour in.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: And I I know that when her music plays, which has permeated in more than just her songs, um, we will we will be thinking of her fondly.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Yes, we will.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I actually saw her once.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: We were at the same appointment, and I heard her before I saw her, and I heard her talking to someone.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh my god, Dolly Parton's here.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: That is remarkable.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: It was a pretty iconic sighting.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I was really excited about it.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Breathing the same air.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: That is wonderful.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Yes, she was she was a very, very special person.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So rest in peace, Dolly.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Her nephew did a beautiful tribute to her on social media, and uh we will miss her a lot.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Everything about her.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And nine to five has been in my head nonstop for the last 24 hours, and I'm totally fine with it.
- 3:15unknown: Totally.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: I've had Jolene, so we're so we're good.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Very I love it.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: I absolutely love it.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: So, in the world of sports, as I mentioned at the top of the show, a lot has happened in the last several days.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I almost don't know where to start, but I think we are gonna just go ahead and start with.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: I actually you know what?
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Let's start with the Deshaun Watson and the Browns.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go in front of the.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: You want to start with Jed York?
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, I think especially we've got a we've got someone who's very familiar with the 49ers franchise.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: So I need to hear the I need to hear your thoughts on this first and foremost.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: So it's honestly hard for me to wrap my head around, to be perfectly honest with you, because I have known Jed York for over 10 years.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And he's always he, his family have always been very supportive of my work and of Fangirl.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And he's a really nice guy.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: He cares so deeply for his sons.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: And we should say that we should say the headline here.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: All right, so the headline is in case anybody has missed it, Jed York was arrested for soliciting a prostitute for now.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: I've seen two different numbers, some say$140, some say$160.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know that it really matters the$20 difference.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Um, he was in Ohio, and he this he was arrested on Sunday morning, and he responded to an ad for it, which was an undercover agent um posing as a prostitute to go to this trailer park in East Palestine, Ohio.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: And he apparently drove onto the lot or on into the mobile home community, didn't see whatever number he was supposed to see, and drove off, but then was arrested.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Um he the charge was changed from soliciting prostitution to I believe disorderly conduct.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Um, he was arrested, they said with criminal tools.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: This was this a term that confused a lot of people, including myself, but apparently his cell phone could what a comment or what a what a description.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh my god, I mean that can't be a thing.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: That can't be a thing.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: That can't be a thing.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Um, he is it was later revealed after this that he is going through a divorce.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: He filed for divorce in May, which also makes me sad because I really um like his now soon to be ex-wife, Danielle.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Um everything about it, I I have to be honest with you, it really I still kind of have trouble wrapping my head around it because it's not that I think he's the first person in the NFL, in the world at large, to solicit a prostitute.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: It's not that, it's the level of just lack of smarts, I think is the word.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: I'm like, dude, you're a billionaire.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: What are you doing doing what are you doing?
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: What are you doing?
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: You could call a high-end escort if that's the direction you want to go.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: There's like a lot of things you could do, so it's just kind of shocking to me.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And that's honestly, so that's what I think, and and not much shocks me anymore, right?
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Especially with the world of sports, like really nothing shocks me, and it's not even the part that wasn't was shocking again, wasn't the soliciting the prostitute, though maybe surprising, it's right everything that went around it that that to it took to get to this point, and apparently, I think he tried to respond to the ad a couple of times, like everything about it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, how how did this happen?
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: And and I think what makes me kind of sad about the whole thing is he's got two sons who are old enough to know exactly what's going on, yeah, and are as are their classmates when they when they go to school if they haven't started already.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Um, he isn't a bad guy by any means, not that this would make someone a bad guy, but he's he's a good person from what I've known of him.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: And he's clearly going through something.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: It's not an excuse in any way, shape, or form, but he is clearly going through something and learning about the divorce.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: And then Kyle Shanahan kind of inadvertently in his, and I want to get back into that in terms of the team in a minute, but inadvertently in his press conference on Tuesday, I believe it was, um, after a practice, someone asked, you know, we saw El Guido, who's the president of the team, on the field.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Will he kind of be taking Jed's place?
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And Kyle said, no, Jed hasn't been here really all training camp since he moved to Ohio.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot clearly going on here.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: They're from Ohio, the Yorks.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, but they're in case people don't know that, they're from Youngston, Ohio.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: But it's just it's really hard to wrap my head around.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I want your thoughts on it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And then I want to get back to the 49ers as a whole because this offseason is an offseason from hell.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: And it'll be interesting to see if it affects them as a team.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: It's like you wonder if the substation affected York's brain, like in decision making.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: But I I mean, I mean like that, I mean that on a satirical level level.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Right, of course, of course.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: Because my biggest question was too, it's I mean, billionaires doing things, having vices, or you know, stepping out of line for things.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: It that's not a new, that's not a new headline, right?
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Um and it's not a new thing.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: It's people, right, right.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: But I think also we we get the headlines when NFL owners, you know, we we've had them before a lot.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Um most recently, I feel like the crafts were Robert Kraft was uh part of that the the sting operation, but it's it's a tale that isn't novel, I guess is what I'm trying to say.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: I do think though, the questions surrounding to the decision making that exposed him in this one is kind of what uh shocks me the most.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: And if anything, I think for like you said, for the family as a whole, you feel for them.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: And then I think when you look at the implications it could have, I mean, it's just embarrassing for the NFL ownership group, like NFL ownership.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, not I don't really think it's gonna have any bearing on the field.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: No, it's probably not gonna have any bearing on the field, it's just like one more thing, but it's interesting with Robert Kraft because we it's been brought up obviously in the last few days.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Robert Kraft had the quote unquote luxury of not having a mugshot, yeah, not actually ever being charged with anything.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that gave him, I think, a little bit of a a stay, so to speak.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't think, and I don't think it's gonna change him owning the team.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: I don't think the NFL is gonna do anything about that.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't know they can, but you are so correct in that it's embarrassing for him, it's embarrassing for his family.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: What I do feel for with the team is now Kyle Shanahan to talk about it on Tuesday.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Fred Warner had to talk about it on Tuesday.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Every player that gets interviewed this week is gonna have to talk about this thing that they really don't want to talk about and really has nothing to do with them.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: So that that is kind of like an annoying thing.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And then you have the 49ers leaving for Australia next week on this trip to show how great the NFL is, and this is a headline.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: It's just it's not ideal.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: And no, I don't think it'll affect them on the field, but in this offseason, you've had John Lynch having to debunk the substation theory, you've had Kyle Shanahan get in a pretty serious car accident.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: You've had um, in terms of on-field stuff, you have Nick Bosa coming back from an injury injury and he's been dealing with tendinitis.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Christian McCaffrey was out like week, it was so not a big deal.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Everyone made a much bigger deal about that.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Like that was part of his his plan.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: It was just, you know, one more thing.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: All the Brandon Ayuk stuff, and then this, it's just it's like an off-season from hell.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I don't, again, I I agree with you.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's gonna affect anything.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: And should they start the season strong and play well, it'll probably kind of a little.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, there might be memes forever, and people will bring it up, but it might go more in the background.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Should they start the season, and I don't think they will, but should they start the season like 0-4, then this is gonna be a conversation piece all around that building and the team for a while.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: And you've been around the team a lot.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Is Jed York a presence that you see and feel around the unit?
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Or is it is it?
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, do you think him being an absentee owner would be kind of on the horizon with a scandal like this?
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, he may, he may have to be.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Um, I think his presence, so it's interesting.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: There's something about Jed York that I had admired in the past is that he made a lot of mistakes early on in his tenure as CEO of this team, a lot of them.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: And when he hired Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch, he really stepped back from like the day-to-day of the team.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: You would still see him at practices, he used it every game, but he kind of stepped back and let them do their thing.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And he even admitted that he'd made mistakes and he learned from them.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Around the 2019 Super Bowl, he, in not so many words, did say, you know, and he learned from them.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: And so I felt like that was such a positive.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Um, so I don't know him not being around, but I'll take you back to the Philadelphia playoff game, the D the divisional round or the wildcard round.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: And George Kittle has the Achilles injury, and he's in the locker room, and Jed York comes in with a bottle of tequila to give to George.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: I remember the torse.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: He's one of the first, he's like the first one with you know his family, and and Jed York comes in.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: And so he cares about this team and he cares about his players.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, so do I think it's gonna seem weird if he's not around for a while?
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Probably not.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: People will comment on it, I'm sure.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: The first game, no Jed York in sight.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: The yeah, I'm assuming he's not gonna go to Australia.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know that for sure.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: That's just an assumption I'm making.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, their first home game, assuming he's not there, you know, no Jed York.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: If he is there, like I just can't imagine right now he he can be there.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: But it's just it's really embarrassing.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: It's embarrassing for the NFL, it's embarrassing for NFL ownership, it's embarrassing for the team.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, I just when you read I read Fred Warner's response, and I kind of felt for him because and same with Kyle, they're trying to dance around a subject that they has nothing to do with them, and they and of course they have to answer the question because that's just part of it, but they shouldn't really have to, you know what I'm saying?
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: So I just kind of felt for them because it's like, ugh, and it's it's just kind of ugh, and yeah, so that is that, but again, I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Not in that I don't believe it clearly, that's that's not the issue.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: It's just kind of hard for me to wrap my head around more than anything, the complete lack of smarts in this situation and the decision making and how he thought this was a good idea.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: I just that is what I'm just really like, I don't even understand how that happens.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Um, if I were advising Jed York, I'm not, I would say he should actually come out and have a press conference and say, listen, I really screwed up.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: I'm really, really screwed up.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: It's not even enough of a word for it.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'm going through something, it's not an excuse, but my decision making or whatever has been compromised.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take some time away from the team and but you know, whatever it is, I don't know that he'll do that, but I feel like that's the best thing you can do to kind of get ahead of it and make it a non-story.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: If you come out and made I made a major mistake and I'm owning it, and I'm gonna, you know, try to do something.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is a take some time move.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna take some time.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, definitely take some time.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: Focus on my family.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: The question is, and I would love your opinion on this.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Do you think you see we see him at a 49ers game this entire season?
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: I think because of the nature of the news cycle.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, listen, um, why am I oh my gosh, uh why am I blinking on the name of the Patriots head coach right now?
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Mike Vrabel.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, we saw how quickly that is kind of you know blown the tumbleweed pass has passed through.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: I think I think we will see York at shown at a 49ers game at some point during this season.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: What about you?
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: And I yeah, I think so.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: I think it really, if he's not there, I do think that would be more his decision, which I can understand because it will be no matter what to Ohio.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: And if I mean if he comes week five or he comes week 14, the first time he's seen a 49ers game will be a story, uh, and it will be covered.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: So we'll see.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I just it is uh someone asked me a friend of mine who doesn't really call cover sports really or not really follow sports, cover football.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: The most she knows is like from my Instagram, and she said to me, Is this shocking or is really nothing shocking anymore?
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: And I said, you know, this one, yes, nothing is really shocking more, but this one I found pretty shocking.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: I think moral of the story is is if keep your business in your house, keep your business in your house.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: You are a billionaire.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: This is not this is it's it's you know what it feels like to me is a little bit like celebrities, athletes getting pulled over for drunk driving.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: I nobody should be getting pulled over for drunk driving, but you can afford an Uber, you can afford a driver.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: What are you doing?
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: It's bad decision making.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: So yeah, this one is very, very strange.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Um, but I guess we'll see.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, kind of what happens going forward.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: And I hope for the team's sake that after this week they don't have to be good about it.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: I think yeah, and that that just don't have to keep talking about it in their conferences.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: It's like, how is it like having Christian McCaffrey back on the field?
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And also, you know, like that's and also um but in terms of about your owner in Ohio, yeah, but in terms of their play, I don't think it'll have any effect on them whatsoever.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: I'd be in fact shocked if it did.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: So switching gears, we're gonna go to a more dysfunctional franchise or a Fairfies franchise that puts the dysfunction in dysfunctional, and that would be the Cleveland Browns, who I'm give a little backstory here, Nikki.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: I know you're aware of it for our listeners in case they missed it.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: There's been a quarterback competition, I guess, between Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Neither of them is exactly lit up the field in any way, shape, or form.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Uh Deshaun Watson at a press conference on Saturday, and he was asked about fans booing him, which of course has nothing really to do with his play on the field.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: But I am of the opinion he deserves to be booed.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: And he didn't.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: He was also pretty bad though.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: He was, oh, he was terrible.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: He was absolutely they're both bad.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: He was terrible.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: But his his thoughts in the press conference was I'm getting booed for not my performance in the field.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: But and yeah, right, rightly so, sir.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, but like rightfully sir.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Actually, I'm not sorry, rightfully so.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: And there was all this talk after the press conference is you know, he can't really be on the Browns anymore.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: How does the fans react to this?
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Blah, blah, blah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: And then he gets named the starter on Monday.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: And my thing is the Browns were willing to overlook a myriad of allegations against Deshaun Watson.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: In his press conference, introducing the Browns, they flat out said we didn't look into the allegations because our attorney told us not to.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: So what do they care if he said he doesn't like being booed?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: How is that going to affect them?
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: And then also, option B is Shador Sanders.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: And so it's not like you have a great in terms of on-field performance, you don't have a great option there either.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: I just I just think like, first of all, the Cleveland had Baker Mayfield.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, they sure did.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: Second of all, this and like you say, this is a franchise that puts dysfunction in dysfunctional, and unlike the 49ers, which just feels like snake bitten, like bad luck.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, you know, this is the consequences of their decision making.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: And I know the whole back the reaction initially to giving Watson guaranteed money has kind of like proved all other NFL owners correct because this has just turned into such a disaster.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: And Watson's sitting on$230 million of guaranteed money and it has a off the field resume that is suggestive of just not a not a good dude, not like the implication, you know, it the the proof is there.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Um and fans are not happy about it.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: They you like you said, booing him, and then for him to react to the boos, feeling disrespected, booing like are you?
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, are you kidding?
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: He should get his response that should because and I think in that same press conference, I think he said, I don't regret anything in life, which I just find very upsetting.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: And he said, I think something similar in his opening press conferences of Brown.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: But what would a person who's quote unquote grown or isn't a complete not nice person?
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: I think this is a family show.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Um so I will not swear, but would come out and be asked about that and say, you know what, I deserve it.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: I've I disappointed the fans in many ways.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Even if you want to say, I stand by my innocence, but clearly I have my actions have led to this.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Um, and I've not been playing well in the field, and I want to work to gain like that would have been, I don't know that anybody would have bought it, bought it, bid it.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: What anybody would have bought it.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: But that at least would have been the mark of an adult who's maybe learned a lot and maybe tried to grow as a person, but no, he's just the same person he was before, and that shouldn't surprise anyone either, because if he wasn't, he wouldn't be in this position in the first place.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: I'm and I don't know if I'm missing something, Tracy, but when I hear about his situation being talked on mainstream media or on podcasts, nobody's talking about the lawsuits that he had to settle anymore.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: No, no one is talking about them anymore.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: And I wonder if it's I wonder if it's so we're uh I guess four or five years removed from it.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: And so people assume like that's a background that people just know.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: Um, but it hasn't and and it's kind of talked around.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what it's I think that's what I'm really yeah I'm I'm weirded out by.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is it's yeah bizarre.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I felt that way about Ben Rothesberger.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Frankly.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: And I just for Watson to be named once again a starting quarterback with that money, you know, as is Cushion, like it's just um it's a bummer.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: On I don't know.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: I don't blame Cleveland fans whatsoever for being upset.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Not at all.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: It is a bummer.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: And then after they named him the starter, they basically said something to the effect of we'll see where we are week three.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: So it's like kind of incredible to name your starter and then talk about when you're thinking about benching him.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Like it's a weird, it's so strange.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: It's so so strange.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: But you make a really good point.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: It has been it's not really discussed.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: It's and when I heard people talk about the press conference, and I don't know how Cleveland fans get over it.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: How did the Browns move past that?
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: He can't, I'm like, the Browns moved past a lot with Deshaun Watson.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: There's a press conference, they don't care.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: And that's the thing to me that it was like, I don't know why everybody thinks, and I understand the conversation and why it was a conversation, and I don't disagree with the conversation.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: It's just in retrospect, the idea that the Browns would care about some comments in a press conference when they didn't care about multiple lawsuits for extremely inappropriate behavior towards women, then you know.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's remember when he had all those masseuses come out to say his innocence, and I was like, that could not make you seem more guilty.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: NFL players, they have one masseuse, and that's their person.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Like they'll fly that person anywhere.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: They have the masseuse a really long time.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: They're so particular.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: If you have 20 Samad masseuses coming out to say you're innocent to counteract the 20 samad masseuses that say you're not, you are guilty as sin.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: I yeah, it's it's and I think to me, the bummer, yeah, the bummer is the way it's being talked around right now.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: It's just when you talk about his reaction to the booze and stuff, the the discourses, not you, sorry.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: The discourse is about, yeah, it's about his play, Shador, and the money he's sitting on and the Browns being dysfunctional.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: It's not about the bad human he has presented himself to be off the field.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: And I remember being at the NFL owners' meetings when he right after he signed that contract, and Judy Batista from NFL Media was on my podcast, and we were talking about the owner's meetings, but we were talking about what happened with Deshaun, and we were both just very upset.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: We were uncomfortable.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: You know, it was like we didn't quite know how to be in a podcast, you know, because it was so fresh, and it just was so upsetting.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: And I remember watching that press conference and be like, this is disgusting, it's just absolutely disgusting, and um, it has continued to be so I don't know, I'm sure it won't go well.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: He probably will get benched, but I don't care.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Like, that's the least of it, as far as I'm concerned.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: His performance as a quarterback to me is like, who cares?
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: I don't care that you got booed, Deshaun.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Boo.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Nope, I don't care.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: I don't care that you're not good anymore.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: I don't care about any of it.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: And he made that comment like, I fought back from two Achilles injuries.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: Like, are you really trying to get sympathy right now?
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: What is what is the matter with you?
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that's that's problematic.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, we've all it's a kind of a problematic podcast.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: It's a problematic podcast.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: It's a problematic week.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: And I don't even want to say we're putting the slander and slander and slate, because this isn't slander.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: This is all just fact.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Just is this is just disappointment.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of disappointment.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: And Nikki, as a golfer that you are, I don't golf.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Speaking of problematic and I want to tell I want to give a shout out to my friend Isaac Rochelle.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: You know, Isaac, he's uh an uh former player, influencer, thought, thought leader online, and you know, he's like I we've had enough, like we just need better men or something else.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: And he is not wrong.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: We just and he has this he has a great workout group called the Garage Dads, and he leads uh local dads in his neighborhood in in Orange County through workouts and showing how like there's good men out there who can do it all, be exemplary husbands and fathers, and take time to work out with the boys too.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: So I um shout out to Isaac Rochelle, but that's the content we need.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, share with us the golf, the problematic golf story of the week.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, should we just put this as K-pop too for the like can we just Yeah, let's definitely put this as K-pop because it's yeah so crazy.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Because so uh last week, late last week, Callaway Golf, a prominent brand in the golf space, and good good, which is a massively, massively popular popular YouTube golf creator group, came up with an advertisement uh on social media that at its core, at its beginning, depicts a man running over to his golf clubs to protect them from a woman grabbing one.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: And in the process, he shoves her to the ground, shoves her, saying, Don't touch my driver.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: And I know there's probably an old ultimate joke that panned out in that video.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: I don't I didn't need to see more past that clip.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: It's incredibly offensive, it's uh massively tone-deaf, it's a huge indictment on uh the Callaway brand because it's not just the people who created that video, but Tracy, you know, at high-level you know, brand content, it goes through multiple checkpoints of approval to be posted on social media.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: So the fact that there were layers of you know yeses on this, it's that's shocking.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: It's offensive, it's just it's disgusting, and it's um, I don't know, another like what the hell is going on?
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: What is going on?
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: And with that, I was thinking about this.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, so someone came up with this idea, had to tell it to someone who was like, Yeah, that's a really good idea, had to have it go through even before it got made, it would have had to go through a bunch of channels to even be approved to get made.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Then it gets made and everybody sees this, and nobody is like this feels problematic and tone-deaf.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, they are they are paying for it as they should.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, there was supposed to be a show, I think, on the golf channel with good good that's now been postponed because a brand has pulled out.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, they're they've had to make statement after statement.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Each the first statements weren't good enough, which is very true and also shocking.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: And so they're making more and more.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's a lot of um consequences to what has happened here, but it is because I think of like when I've done brand deals for 30 second spots on my Instagram, and you know, I have a good following, but yes, you know, I'm not Callaway golf, I'm not good, good.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: And first I have to submit the idea of what I want to do, it has to get approved, then I have to film it, then I send it, that has to get approved, and uh sometimes they come back and like we're need you it doesn't happen often, but we need you to reshoot this or that.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Nothing offensive, they just need something reshot.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: So, how is it that that happens for me?
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: And how, and nobody, nobody looked at this and said, This is just really tone-deaf, and it's it is offensive, it's disgusting.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, it really is, it's absolutely disgusting.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's it's kind of like it's going to raise a lot of questions.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: The apologies didn't seem very um since I don't, I don't know, sincere or thorough.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Um no, they felt more like, oh, we better apologize.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Let's get this out.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Gotta issue a statement, gotta issue a statement.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's going, I know CNN had an interesting article about like how this is a crux or an it's it's a very interesting intersection of like the you the internet culture that is emerging around golf right now and the guardrails of an older uh sport steeped in tradition, and now it's getting kind of this creator vibe around it, which sure you want to expand the game always, uh, but by single-handedly putting out a clip like that, that also in I don't know, it fuels it fuels that dark corner of the internet of woman haters and uh people who don't see a problem with an advertisement like that, and they come out and it gives them um a voice, and yeah, it just it's bad all around.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: It is, and I think uh going back to the Deshaun Watson story.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, it's what it it is is a complete disrespect of women.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: That's what it is.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: It's all of both of these things is are are completely disrespecting women and thinking it's okay to reward such behavior.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: And I know with the ad there have been no rewards for the behavior, but the idea that it was made and he literally shoves her to the ground.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, I just don't understand how that's not in today's world or any world, that did not raise any red flags for anybody, but I think the fact that it didn't is says scary so much.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that is that is the scary part, and I don't that it's on the is not that it's on the woman Alexis in the ad, but like what are you doing?
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Letting yourself get pushed to the ground.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: I I don't know, and maybe she didn't have a I don't know.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: I thought about that too.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: I I thought unless unless in the making of it, she's like, this is funny, not thinking through the implication that I don't right, I don't know.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's not funny, it's not even like a little bit.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: And then I when I watched the clip too, some I was like, I also want to know, aside from the fact that this is offensive and disgusting, and I don't know how it got made, it's not even it's not funny, it's bad.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: No, it's actually bad, it's a bad ad.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: For me, it looks like something out of a video game of like um one of those violent video games.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: Yes, it totally did, and it was bizarre.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, apparently, I don't know if this is true or not.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: I think everything Callaway was pulled from Costco, which I love.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: I saw, and I saw um that a golf reporter got a DM from the parent company of Dick Sporting Goods that said that everything good good, I think has to be pulled from the shelves.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is for Callaway and their it's an unmitigated disaster.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, it really it's a complete and total disaster.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of going back to what you're saying about Jed York, and it's embarrassing for the NFL and NFL.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: This is embarrassing for golf, right?
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: This is embarrassing for everybody involved, and it's embarrassing for the strides made in golf to make it a more accessible sport, to make there grow the audience and the viewership.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: And this is just it's just bad.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: It's so bad, it's just disgusting.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: It's just, but it goes back to what we just said, and that was the scary part is that it didn't bother that didn't raise red flags.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: I find that the most frightening part of the whole thing, yeah.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: As you said, Calloway, good, good, take some time.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Take some time, take some time.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: I saw a headline that said everything at good good is bad, bad right now.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: And I would say that is probably very, very, very true.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, take some time.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: It's been um, it's been a week, Nikki.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: It has definitely been a week, and we've had weeks where we've talked about Summer House and we talk about the MVP race, and we talk about the Knicks and Timmy and Kylie, and we have so much fun on this show.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: But sometimes we have to talk about these things that are so serious and are just really disappointing.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: I'm disappointed.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we gotta we gotta stand up for the girls, we gotta stand up for the girls, and uh you know that's it it's disappointing.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: It's a disappointing week all the way around.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: And at the time that we are doing this, it's Wednesday.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: So let's just hope that in the next two days there is nothing more.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: A little slight shift for you here.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Um away from these topics, touching on football.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: Do you think do you think NFL players should be able to go back to college?
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, I'm so glad that you brought this up.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: No, because it's no it's because like what like this is becoming the transfer portal.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: People like to blame NIL, it's not it's the transfer portal, it's literally the wild, wild west.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: And once you've been an NFL player, no, you should not.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: You know, the NFL.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: I think I saw something that they're gonna clarify today to teams that anyone who goes back to college cannot play for a team in 2026.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: So you can't go back to LSU and decide, nah, this isn't as fun as I thought it would be.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: I want to go back over to the Tampa Bay Bunkaneers.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: You can't do that, but no, I don't think so.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: That's that's part of it.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: That's this isn't camp college.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this isn't camp college, but this is what has happened, unfortunately, with the transfer portal, which has become I didn't like how my practice reps were today.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: I'm going to the transfer portal and leaving the school.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: And I think life's hard.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: Life is hard, and actually, I remember Kyle Shanahan saying, I think it was the Ricky Pearsall draft year.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: So that would be 2024.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was the year before 2023.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: Either way, he was asked about NIL and the transfer portal and all of that.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: And and does it help some rookies come in like maybe more mature?
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: And I think for some, it certainly did.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: I brock pretty in there.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: I'm sure there are many, many others.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: But he made a comment which I thought was so interesting.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: And he said, our rookies are gonna have to understand that if they don't like their day at practice, they don't get to just leave.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: And that is gonna be a change.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: And I think that's it's just ridiculous.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: No, also, also, at some point, if you're a team drafting someone out of college, like and you look at their resume of where they played, and they've played three, four, five institutions, you gotta wonder A what's leading to the bounce around.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: B, does this guy have any friends or like know how to build or lead a team?
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: I because that gets lost in the fold.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: But yeah, all I mean, and that's that's aside from the absurdity of players deciding, oh, I didn't like my training camp.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go back to where I know I had it made.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: I Sean McVeigh said, I thought I was on a gummy, like when I read this.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: And and I think it's good that the Big Ten and SEC now have ratified that they won't allow in and SEC, I think came out with like no NBA, WMBA, or NFL.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Maybe because this opens once it starts, it's real hard.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: But think of it this way it's not the same, but kind of.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: Let's pretend you would study to be a lawyer and you go to law school and you're you nail it, you kill it.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: You're just like, this is I'm gonna be the best lawyer of all time.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Then you go to your first job and it's really, really hard, and you're not nailing it.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: And I know it's different, but it kind of isn't.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: You're like, you know what?
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna do I think I'm gonna go back to law school for another year.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: It's it's people may say that it's that's a ridiculous comparison and it's different, but not really.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's choosing or or like you think about doctors who spend all that time, you know, like like you know what?
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: I think I'm just gonna go back to med school.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: This is I don't actually like being a doctor.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: I'd rather just go back to medical.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: I I didn't have a great, I don't get have a great day in the OR.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna sit out the next year.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm gonna sit out, see what I'm saying.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Once you make that leap, you show up.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: If you did that as a doctor, uh no hospital was ever gonna hire you again.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Ever.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: No, I know.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: And of course we picked the two most like thorough professions, but you know, it's still the best.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: But I think but uh those professions to me take training and commitment.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like kind of the bet to me, it's like the best comp because you certainly, you know, you can go back to grad school if you want to go back to school for things, but the idea that you could just like go back or sit out a year and then come back and everything's totally fine, it's it's rather ridiculous.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: So it's it's absurd.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: It's absurd.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: Absurd is the perfect word.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, the words of this week are disappointing and absurd.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Yep, those are gonna be the words of the week here on Slander and Slay.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but with that, with that, with all that, guys, the good news of being being down low is you can only go up.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love that.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: We're gonna take that into this next week, Nikki.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: That's fantastic.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Um, great.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: Well, with that, please make sure to subscribe.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: Rate review, slander and slay here on Buzzer.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: I am Tracy Sandler, and I'm Nikki Kay, and we love you.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: We do, and we'll do our little heart that we do at the end of every show.
- 39:45unknown: Yay!
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: Bye all
