- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, guys, I think, wait, we're still doing injuries, aren't.
- 0:11Speaker 1: We just know we switched it around. My bad, I'm stupid.
- 0:15Speaker 1: All right, let's get to David O'Brien's tweets. The retired
- 0:20Speaker 1: Atlanta Braves writer he was the guy that heyesus replaced
- 0:24Speaker 1: in the athletic and what he has said recently about
- 0:27Speaker 1: Walt White. So we're doubling up here with a little
- 0:29Speaker 1: bit of Braves talk as we're going to go over
- 0:32Speaker 1: what he said was a retired player, he said, a
- 0:35Speaker 1: former star player telling him this week the teams almost
- 0:37Speaker 1: always take on the character or personality of their manager,
- 0:40Speaker 1: whether quickly or over time. He said, they almost always do.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And I agree with that. And this was in reference
- 0:47Speaker 1: to a fan talking about Walt White saying, it's been
- 0:50Speaker 1: interesting to see the Walt Weiss era start like this.
- 0:53Speaker 2: This isn't some fluke.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Makes me wonder the kind of influence he had the
- 0:56Speaker 1: fans didn't know about when he was bench coach, and
- 0:58Speaker 1: how Bobby Cox still has some influence in the current team.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The late great O'Brien said, tough, aggressive nobs never sought attention.
- 1:06Speaker 1: The latter is why no one outside the clubhouse or
- 1:08Speaker 1: the teams inner circle would have known about Walt and
- 1:10Speaker 1: his influence never stepped on the manager's toes, but he
- 1:12Speaker 1: was always there working building respect and relationships.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So bigger combo here, AJ.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Do you feel like teams can be chameleons based off
- 1:21Speaker 1: of their managers?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Well, I think first of all, managers find guys that
- 1:25Speaker 3: they like, and they want guys that they like and
- 1:28Speaker 3: want to play a certain way. For the most part,
- 1:29Speaker 3: if they can, they try to build their teams around
- 1:31Speaker 3: their style. I look at Pat Murphy and say, Pat
- 1:34Speaker 3: Murphy has a team made up of guys that I
- 1:37Speaker 3: would think he likes. For the most part. They play
- 1:39Speaker 3: the game the way he thinks they should be played.
- 1:41Speaker 3: And that's what teams do, and that's why they can
- 1:43Speaker 3: shift to their manager. You know, if you're the Braves
- 1:45Speaker 3: and you have someone like Walt Weis who was already there,
- 1:48Speaker 3: and he just moves up to the next spot and
- 1:50Speaker 3: they continue to listen to him because he does have
- 1:52Speaker 3: a voice, because he played, he's respected, he's around, he
- 1:56Speaker 3: knows what they're there, what he's there for the players
- 1:58Speaker 3: do Yes, I think it's a great thing. And this
- 2:01Speaker 3: is not a knock on Brian Snicker at all. I
- 2:03Speaker 3: mean Ryan Snicker was the same way as he learned
- 2:05Speaker 3: from Bobby, and Walt learned from Bobby and Freddy Gonzalez
- 2:08Speaker 3: before him learned from Bobby. It also helps and you
- 2:10Speaker 3: have really good players. I mean, I remember back in
- 2:12Speaker 3: the day, I had Tom Kelly and we had Ron
- 2:14Speaker 3: garden Hier was a third base coach, and Ron garden
- 2:16Speaker 3: Hier took over as manager, and everything seemed to see
- 2:19Speaker 3: the stay the same except where Guardy went from third
- 2:23Speaker 3: base coach to manager. We brought in some different people,
- 2:24Speaker 3: which was fine and that was it, but we had
- 2:27Speaker 3: the same personality. Guardy was a little bit looser than
- 2:30Speaker 3: what t K was, but it was still the same
- 2:32Speaker 3: because we knew what we were getting with Ron Gardenhier,
- 2:35Speaker 3: which is what I think the players in Atlanta knew
- 2:37Speaker 3: what they were getting in Walt Weiss and listen. I
- 2:39Speaker 3: played for Ozzie Gean, who people would call crazy, but
- 2:42Speaker 3: Ozzie also knew what he was doing and if you
- 2:44Speaker 3: could if you could handle playing for Ozzie, you could
- 2:46Speaker 3: pretty much handle playing for anybody. And as far as
- 2:49Speaker 3: team's taking on his personality, I mean, we knew what
- 2:52Speaker 3: we were getting us veteran guys knew what we were
- 2:53Speaker 3: getting with Ozzie, and as long as Ozzie respected you,
- 2:57Speaker 3: he would kind of leave you alone. It was the
- 2:59Speaker 3: guys that he didn't feel we're doing things the right
- 3:01Speaker 3: way that he would go after and then he would
- 3:03Speaker 3: usually try and get rid of them, which he did
- 3:05Speaker 3: for the most part. So yes, I agree with this
- 3:07Speaker 3: one hundred percent. Teams take on their personality of their manager.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Also, I think there's I've been on teams too, that
- 3:15Speaker 4: the manager's a boob, like he doesn't really know what's
- 3:18Speaker 4: going on, and I think players rally around that like
- 3:22Speaker 4: I think they rally around. But that's the rare case.
- 3:24Speaker 4: What's happening here with Walt Weiss really the only thing
- 3:27Speaker 4: because of how much I mean all those things, I
- 3:30Speaker 4: forget all the characteristics that they just said about that
- 3:33Speaker 4: O'Brien said about Walt Weiss. Those are all characteristics of
- 3:37Speaker 4: somebody that you're like, Okay, the transition from bench coach,
- 3:41Speaker 4: which is more of a laid back kind of role,
- 3:43Speaker 4: still like very not disciplinarian, but very dotting eyes and
- 3:49Speaker 4: crossing teams, worried about like the little things, just not
- 3:53Speaker 4: in the forefront. That's that type of role, the transition
- 3:57Speaker 4: to being a manager. The only issue is is is
- 4:00Speaker 4: he the same guy? Is he going to be the
- 4:02Speaker 4: same guy when he steps into the managerial role. It
- 4:04Speaker 4: was a question for Pat Murphy when he went from
- 4:07Speaker 4: the bench coach. It was like, you know, he's like happy, jolly, go,
- 4:10Speaker 4: you know, go lucky type of bench coach, and he
- 4:15Speaker 4: stayed the same person. If you show up the next
- 4:17Speaker 4: year as a manager after being the bench coach and
- 4:20Speaker 4: you're like, all of a sudden, you're just somebody completely different.
- 4:24Speaker 4: You don't joke anymore, or he joke too much, and
- 4:26Speaker 4: it's like, whoa, this is awkward. Players don't know how
- 4:29Speaker 4: to handle that, especially a team like the Braves. They
- 4:31Speaker 4: didn't change much about their team. They brought in Robert Suarez,
- 4:35Speaker 4: they brought in Dubon, they brought in Dom Smith and
- 4:38Speaker 4: Yaz but essentially the core of this.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Team is the same. So you have to you have
- 4:44Speaker 5: to know.
- 4:45Speaker 4: And Alex Anthropolos deserves a lot of credit for making
- 4:48Speaker 4: this higher or whatever it is, you know, elevating him
- 4:52Speaker 4: to his new position that it was going to work
- 4:55Speaker 4: because of his personality. Ultimately, that's what it is teams.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Teams do take on their manager's personality, probably because of
- 5:04Speaker 4: what AJ said, because if they don't like a guy,
- 5:08Speaker 4: you don't play the way that a manager really feels
- 5:11Speaker 4: like you should like their team should play. They get
- 5:14Speaker 4: them out of there and they get somebody in that
- 5:16Speaker 4: does play that way.
- 5:19Speaker 1: The social media audience is not necessarily the majority in
- 5:24Speaker 1: many cases, but I do feel the need to point
- 5:27Speaker 1: this out. When Walt Weiss was announced as manager, there
- 5:32Speaker 1: were many frustrated people or perhaps even braves fans that
- 5:38Speaker 1: lashed out and now are everyone's favorite hermit crabs because
- 5:44Speaker 1: they looked at last year and the team wasn't good
- 5:47Speaker 1: or wasn't good enough to make a postseason. They're like, ah,
- 5:51Speaker 1: Snicker's fault, he's not making the right decisions.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Weiss's snicker. Ah, they're just going to run everything the same.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Has that going.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Probably choice if that's what they're doing, But I don't
- 6:06Speaker 4: Maybe AJ disagrees. I don't think they're running it the same.
- 6:10Speaker 4: I don't think it's Yes, there's the same players, but
- 6:13Speaker 4: I don't think they're running it the same. Clearly, the
- 6:16Speaker 4: players have ultimate end of the day, none of this.
- 6:19Speaker 4: We don't even have a job. If it's just if
- 6:21Speaker 4: you just realize the truth, players have to play better.
- 6:25Speaker 4: But there is an environment that managers create. There is
- 6:30Speaker 4: an environment that the bench coach creates, that the pitching
- 6:33Speaker 4: coach create. Oh wait, did they get a pitching coach
- 6:35Speaker 4: that was pretty decent from somewhere else?
- 6:38Speaker 5: I forget exactly.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Maybe maybe the team probably could use a pitching coach,
- 6:42Speaker 4: just saying there's a lot.
- 6:43Speaker 5: It's not just the.

- 7:49Speaker 1: M hm, Hey, have you ever seen aja player really
- 7:54Speaker 1: affected by a manager so much so that like they
- 7:57Speaker 1: can't handle the situation and like they're too strict or
- 8:01Speaker 1: they're too honest like Ozzie, or just they just say
- 8:05Speaker 1: stuff and it affects them. It couldn't It doesn't have
- 8:08Speaker 1: to be Auzzy, but just have you ever seen an instance,
- 8:10Speaker 1: you know, obviously the player's name, where guys are just
- 8:13Speaker 1: reacting so positive or negatively that it's affecting the way
- 8:17Speaker 1: that they show up to work.
- 8:20Speaker 7: Nick Swisher?
- 8:21Speaker 3: Have you ever heard Nick Swisher and Ozziegan talk about
- 8:24Speaker 3: each other? Nick Fisher went from the fullest energy guy
- 8:27Speaker 3: you've ever seen to not having one lick of energy
- 8:29Speaker 3: and not wanting to play. So yeah, I've seen it happen.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I've seen it happen on a bunch of different teams
- 8:38Speaker 3: where the manager and the player don't get along and
- 8:40Speaker 3: they just it doesn't work and they end up getting
- 8:43Speaker 3: moved on. So yeah, I mean I saw Nick Swisher
- 8:46Speaker 3: and Ozzie Gan. They went at it from day one
- 8:48Speaker 3: and spring training till the end of the year, and
- 8:49Speaker 3: Swisher ended up on the Yankees in two thousand and
- 8:52Speaker 3: nine and they went on to win a World Series
- 8:53Speaker 3: and now he's you know, the Yankees legend. But yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 3: Nick Wisher and Ozzie Gan were so I mean oil
- 9:00Speaker 3: and water, whatever you want to call them, and cats
- 9:02Speaker 3: and dogs, and they went at it more than once,
- 9:05Speaker 3: and it just didn't get along because they both wanted attention.
- 9:08Speaker 3: And at the end of the day, if you have
- 9:11Speaker 3: to understand that, Ozzie's going to win the attention battle,
- 9:13Speaker 3: and that was what he was good at. It Also
- 9:16Speaker 3: it took a lot of attention off players, but at
- 9:18Speaker 3: the same time, it could sometimes put you in bad spots.
- 9:21Speaker 3: But if you understood that, and that's why, I mean,
- 9:23Speaker 3: Ozzie and I have always gotten along we still get
- 9:24Speaker 3: along to this day. I love Ozzie like a family
- 9:26Speaker 3: member of mine, but you have to understand what you
- 9:30Speaker 3: were getting yourself into.
- 9:31Speaker 7: But Nick Swisher is definitely the top of the list.
- 9:34Speaker 4: I mean, and this is only this is really only
- 9:36Speaker 4: a question for star players because the role player guys,
- 9:40Speaker 4: if you don't get along with the manager, it goes
- 9:43Speaker 4: like this, you're done, like kick to the curb. They'll
- 9:46Speaker 4: find somebody else. That's just the average player, just the
- 9:50Speaker 4: replacement player like this is. And so part of the
- 9:54Speaker 4: being a manager is you have to be able to say,
- 9:58Speaker 4: I get it Swisher, because you brought it up. Is
- 10:02Speaker 4: this level player. But if we're not going to get along,
- 10:06Speaker 4: I'm the one.
- 10:07Speaker 5: I'm the one.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Steering the ship and I don't like what he's doing,
- 10:11Speaker 4: how he does it, whatever, whatever they they argued about.
- 10:16Speaker 4: That's the big that's the biggest thing. And if you're
- 10:18Speaker 4: a player that wants attention and your manager wants attention,
- 10:23Speaker 4: you're the player. Like there still has to be a
- 10:26Speaker 4: respect level between player and coach that the manager, the
- 10:31Speaker 4: bench coach, they are the respected figure. And it's not
- 10:36Speaker 4: just well I'm the star, I should be I should
- 10:39Speaker 4: be the one that gets all the attention. I should
- 10:41Speaker 4: be the manager shouldn't take attention away. But ultimately the
- 10:45Speaker 4: manager is the boss. That's the hefe.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So aj if Especial talks all the time, and so
- 10:53Speaker 1: does Ozzie.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Was it bothering him?
- 10:57Speaker 1: You think that Ozzy was dominating the conversation and you know,
- 11:01Speaker 1: maybe nitpicking or criticizing him or whatever it is, Like
- 11:05Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, looking from the outside and
- 11:08Speaker 1: not knowing that situation at all, I'd be like, oh,
- 11:10Speaker 1: those two guys, you could probably just put him in
- 11:12Speaker 1: a room and they'll just both keep talking at the
- 11:13Speaker 1: same time and not even know that the other one's talking.
- 11:15Speaker 2: But I don't know. It's just kind of not that.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I am surprised that they clashed, but it's an interesting
- 11:21Speaker 1: one to me that from day one they don't get along.
- 11:26Speaker 3: No really, I mean, Swisher didn't play very well and
- 11:28Speaker 3: he got bench and he didn't like that Aussie benched
- 11:30Speaker 3: him because I mean, the problem that Nick Fisher had
- 11:35Speaker 3: when he came over is and I don't know if
- 11:37Speaker 3: I've told this story before, but we were in spring
- 11:39Speaker 3: training one year and we had uh Orlando Cabrera at shortstop.
- 11:46Speaker 3: We had I think Wanya reb I think you know
- 11:49Speaker 3: Creedi was there at third. We had Alexi Ramirez, we
- 11:53Speaker 3: had Paul Kanerko, we had Jim Tolmy, we had Jermaine Die,
- 11:57Speaker 3: we had Carlos Quinton, and we had I don't even
- 12:00Speaker 3: horse centerfielder was that, you're uh, I forget who it
- 12:03Speaker 3: was supposed to be Swisher, maybe Brian Anderson, I don't know.
- 12:05Speaker 7: And then you had me right and.
- 12:07Speaker 3: The spring training Swisher was hitting eighth in the in
- 12:10Speaker 3: the in the spring training game, and he comes up
- 12:12Speaker 3: to us and we're all standing around and spring Training goes,
- 12:15Speaker 3: I can't believe I'm hitting eighth. He goes, I'll be
- 12:16Speaker 3: hitting fourth by the end of May. And we're like, okay,
- 12:19Speaker 3: so you're going to take over for Jermaine Died, Jim Tomy,
- 12:23Speaker 3: Paul Knerico, Carlos Quinton, Joe Creedy. That's six that I
- 12:26Speaker 3: came up with off the top of my head. Alexei Ramirez,
- 12:29Speaker 3: who had a really good rookie year. There's seven me
- 12:31Speaker 3: who had been there for a long time. There's eight
- 12:33Speaker 3: and oh yeah, Orlando Cabrera is going to hit in
- 12:35Speaker 3: the top four too. So there's nine guys, Swish, where
- 12:38Speaker 3: do you fit in on this? You're not dhing because
- 12:41Speaker 3: you're not. Jim Tomy's going to Dhu has five hundred homers.
- 12:45Speaker 3: So that was kind of where it all started. And
- 12:47Speaker 3: then when he didn't perform, it just made it. It
- 12:49Speaker 3: just kind of grew war on people, but especially war
- 12:52Speaker 3: on Ozzie because he had to hear it all the time.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Damn that team had bats games.
- 13:00Speaker 3: We traded for Griffy in the middle of the year too,
- 13:01Speaker 3: Let's not forget. So we had Griffy and I remember
- 13:04Speaker 3: one time, this is this is such a funny story.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Swisher hit his hundredth career homer and he goes back
- 13:10Speaker 3: to the back of the plane and he's sitting there
- 13:12Speaker 3: with Jim who had five hundred, Griffy who had six hundred,
- 13:15Speaker 3: Canerko and Die I think had three or four hundred.
- 13:18Speaker 7: They had three hundred at the dime each. Right.
- 13:20Speaker 3: He goes back, he goes, hey, guys, let's all get
- 13:22Speaker 3: a picture. And they all look at him like what
- 13:24Speaker 3: are you doing? And he goes, you know, all those
- 13:25Speaker 3: guys that have one hundred homers And it was again Griffy, Tody,
- 13:28Speaker 3: Die Conergo and they're like, what, like, you have one
- 13:32Speaker 3: hundred homers, we have three hundred, four hundred, five hundred,
- 13:34Speaker 3: six hundred homers.
- 13:36Speaker 2: The one hundred homer club safe geez.
- 13:40Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:42Speaker 5: It feels like one of those.
- 13:43Speaker 4: It feels like one of those like pie charts where
- 13:46Speaker 4: it's like all the homers from everybody in his picture
- 13:48Speaker 4: and it's like just a little sliver.
- 13:54Speaker 7: Yeah, it was.
- 13:54Speaker 3: It was one of those. There's a lot, there's some
- 13:56Speaker 3: there's a lot of Swisser stories. I like, Nick, So
- 13:58Speaker 3: I'm not gonna I'm not gonna come on here and
- 14:00Speaker 3: say bad things. But I saw a lot of things
- 14:02Speaker 3: happen that year that I was like, Wow, this is
- 14:05Speaker 3: this is different than anything we've ever had here.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Completely off topic. This is my time and I usually
- 14:11Speaker 4: want to do it once a year. Please go look
- 14:13Speaker 4: up Germaine dies baseball reference page. That's it. You brought
- 14:17Speaker 4: him up. That was the last year he played. It
- 14:18Speaker 4: should not have been the last year. I don't know
- 14:21Speaker 4: him as a teammate, as a person. Anything people need
- 14:24Speaker 4: to know about Germaine died.
- 14:26Speaker 5: That's it. That's it. That's my PSA.
- 14:29Speaker 3: No he played, he played after that, he played till
- 14:30Speaker 3: like twenty ten. I thought he was after two thousand and.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Eight, No, not nine.
- 14:35Speaker 7: Nine to nine.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Nine was his last year when he should have gotten
- 14:38Speaker 4: a deal, and everybody was like, well, you know you
- 14:41Speaker 4: are getting older. But anyway, just look it up Baseball
- 14:45Speaker 4: Reference it.
- 14:46Speaker 1: The game tried to push him out, like a Brandon
- 14:48Speaker 1: Belt situation. Someday we're going to go, hey, look at
- 14:50Speaker 1: Brandon Belts last season. People wait, wait, nobody wanted a
- 14:54Speaker 1: one thirty five ops plus that was it, and yes,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you got to get your value. But he, I mean,
- 14:59Speaker 1: my guesses he thought he should make whatever, make a
- 15:02Speaker 1: number ten and teams are offering him too, and he's like, no,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I'm good. You know, different situation Fromank Anthony Rizzo, whose
- 15:08Speaker 1: kind of time was expired. There reporting live with Jesus Cano,
- 15:16Speaker 1: newest Braves reporter, and he's covering them for the Athletic
- 15:20Speaker 1: longtime friend of ours through Baseball America as well. You've
- 15:24Speaker 1: heard him on our Hot sheet show there. Now he's
- 15:26Speaker 1: talking Braves.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Hazeus.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Congratulations on the job announcement a couple of weeks ago, and.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Welcome to covering the Atlanta Braves. What's it been like?
- 15:34Speaker 1: What are you seeing with this team clicking on many
- 15:37Speaker 1: cylinders right now.
- 15:39Speaker 8: Well, I'll tell you this, it's a lot different from
- 15:41Speaker 8: the complex sleep, which is what I was covering with
- 15:43Speaker 8: Baseball America. So to be in a big League park
- 15:45Speaker 8: almost every single day has been such a huge difference.
- 15:47Speaker 8: It's been a dream country and I'm just so thankful
- 15:49Speaker 8: for the athletic for giving me the opportunity, along with
- 15:51Speaker 8: Baseball America for helping me get to this point. But
- 15:54Speaker 8: with that being said, you know it's Brave's time, and
- 15:56Speaker 8: you know I've only been with the team. You know,
- 15:58Speaker 8: I was at the away series in line Los Angeles,
- 16:00Speaker 8: and I was here obviously, here through the home standing
- 16:02Speaker 8: through the end of the week, and on the road
- 16:03Speaker 8: for the rest of the year, which is crazy to say,
- 16:06Speaker 8: but at the end of the day, I think when
- 16:07Speaker 8: I look at what's going on in the clubhouse, the
- 16:10Speaker 8: chemistry is off the charts. I think that's what you
- 16:12Speaker 8: see from this team in the sense of how they're
- 16:14Speaker 8: going out, how they're playing. You know, they're the best
- 16:17Speaker 8: team in baseball right now. First team, the thirty first team,
- 16:19Speaker 8: the thirty wins. And I'm going to give you guys
- 16:21Speaker 8: this quiz right now, from the game notes that they have.
- 16:24Speaker 8: So the last three teams to have at least an
- 16:25Speaker 8: eighth game Division League by May thirteenth, or the twenty
- 16:29Speaker 8: seventeen Astros, the twenty sixteen Cubs, and the two thousand
- 16:32Speaker 8: and seven Red Sox.
- 16:33Speaker 9: What do all those teams have in common?
- 16:37Speaker 8: Well, serious, they were all World Series champs, and so
- 16:42Speaker 8: obviously it's a long season.
- 16:44Speaker 9: There's still a lot to go on.
- 16:46Speaker 8: But it just shows to the way that the Braves
- 16:47Speaker 8: are playing right now and as successful as they are.
- 16:50Speaker 8: And I asked Walt Weiss to postgame a couple of
- 16:52Speaker 8: days ago, this is also a resilient team because we
- 16:55Speaker 8: have to remember there've been you know, just injury pleck
- 16:57Speaker 8: throughout the entire year. Sean Murphy was on the IL,
- 17:00Speaker 8: comes back for a couple of days, goes back on there.
- 17:02Speaker 8: Spencer Strider was on the afi io, he comes back,
- 17:05Speaker 8: and then boom, ronald A Kunya Junior goes on the
- 17:07Speaker 8: io with a hamstring injury. This team hasn't been at
- 17:10Speaker 8: whole health through the entire season, and yet they're able
- 17:12Speaker 8: to go out there and produce and just play like
- 17:15Speaker 8: the best team in baseball.
- 17:16Speaker 9: As the record reflects and.
- 17:17Speaker 8: It's kind of scary to think what's going to happen
- 17:19Speaker 8: when this team looks healthy and just how even better
- 17:21Speaker 8: they're going to be able to play going forward.
- 17:24Speaker 4: Is there anything that you look at and you go, ah, well,
- 17:26Speaker 4: this is this is abnormal because even if you look
- 17:30Speaker 4: at guys like Bryce Elder, who yes, I get a
- 17:33Speaker 4: twenty four and twenty five, it wasn't it wasn't great
- 17:35Speaker 4: for him after he made the All Star team, but
- 17:37Speaker 4: he wasn't All Stars, so he has it in there.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Like do you feel like there's an area where you
- 17:41Speaker 4: can point to and go, oh, they're kind of playing
- 17:44Speaker 4: over their skis right now? Or is it all just
- 17:46Speaker 4: kind because you already mentioned the injuries. Is it just
- 17:48Speaker 4: kind of status quo and this is a team that
- 17:51Speaker 4: could easily hold this out for the rest of the season.
- 17:55Speaker 9: You know, not the jingsum or anything like that. But
- 17:57Speaker 9: I think that definitely the possibility there is. Obviously, it's
- 17:59Speaker 9: a very long season. You don't know what could come.
- 18:02Speaker 8: You don't know what could happen between now and you know,
- 18:04Speaker 8: at the end of September, right but I think with
- 18:06Speaker 8: the way they're going, also the way the rest of
- 18:07Speaker 8: the vision is played, isn't as strong. You know, there's
- 18:09Speaker 8: only maybe one team over five hundred and everybody else
- 18:12Speaker 8: is kind of staggering. I mean, the Nationals are in
- 18:14Speaker 8: second place, which you know, is kind of crazy to
- 18:16Speaker 8: think that they're ahead over the Phillies with everything going
- 18:19Speaker 8: on over there. But I mean, this team's in a
- 18:21Speaker 8: really good position to be able to make that run.
- 18:23Speaker 8: And something that you know, in the conversations that I've
- 18:25Speaker 8: had with players, you know, it's it's you see guys
- 18:28Speaker 8: consistently like Matt Olsen, like Drake Baldwin, and like Ozzy
- 18:33Speaker 8: Albus has kind of had a career, you know, bounced
- 18:34Speaker 8: back season compared to last year. There's different players that
- 18:37Speaker 8: are stepping up every single time. You know, for the
- 18:40Speaker 8: past couple of games, it's been Mikus Strumsky. He had
- 18:43Speaker 8: his home run yesterday, had to go ahead hit Mauricio
- 18:46Speaker 8: Dubond which crazy to me to think that the praise
- 18:48Speaker 8: were able to give Maurisio Devon straight up for Nick
- 18:51Speaker 8: Allen and I don't know what the Asters were thinking
- 18:53Speaker 8: in that. And then he comes over to Atlanta and
- 18:55Speaker 8: just becomes arguably probably a Swiss Army knife when it
- 18:58Speaker 8: comes to the team in the way that he's able
- 19:00Speaker 8: to play many positions. You can slot him in the infield,
- 19:03Speaker 8: you can slot him in the outfield, and he's gonna
- 19:05Speaker 8: go out there. He's going to put up a product
- 19:07Speaker 8: to that bad. He likes being the underdog, he likes
- 19:09Speaker 8: being slept on, And yesterday he came out with a
- 19:13Speaker 8: two out home run to you know, kind of give
- 19:15Speaker 8: a little bit of insurance run. There's guys throughout the
- 19:17Speaker 8: entire roster that just seem to be stepping up. You know,
- 19:20Speaker 8: Austin Riley's starting to come pick it back up. Everybody
- 19:23Speaker 8: is stepping up to the plate in this case.
- 19:24Speaker 9: And I think that's kind of what made this Grapes
- 19:26Speaker 9: team so special, is.
- 19:27Speaker 8: That nobody could have predicted this at the beginning of
- 19:29Speaker 8: the season, you know, and if they did the kind
- 19:31Speaker 8: of line because after the season they had last year,
- 19:35Speaker 8: the injuries that they went down, and now you see
- 19:37Speaker 8: all they're doing. Best team right now. The stats are
- 19:39Speaker 8: right there up to prove it first in a lot
- 19:41Speaker 8: of different categories. As you guys are able to see,
- 19:43Speaker 8: I think this is really sustainable going forward, especially when
- 19:46Speaker 8: you get guys like Ronald Acuna, jun your back in
- 19:48Speaker 8: the lineup too. I mean, he is you know, obviously,
- 19:50Speaker 8: we know what he's been able to do in the past.
- 19:52Speaker 8: We know the energy and the spark he brings to
- 19:54Speaker 8: the team, and he brings to the lineup, and once
- 19:56Speaker 8: he's back and he gets things going, I think this
- 19:58Speaker 8: is going to be a really dangerous brains team. And
- 19:59Speaker 8: that's already saying that. You know, they have the best
- 20:02Speaker 8: record in baseball right now. It's just what's the one
- 20:05Speaker 8: thing you worry about? Is it picture health?
- 20:07Speaker 3: Is it batter's falling falling off? What's the one thing
- 20:11Speaker 3: you think that the Braves cannot afford to have happened?
- 20:14Speaker 3: Is it losing Chrysale for an extended period? Because everything
- 20:18Speaker 3: right now has gone right. I know they've had some injuries,
- 20:20Speaker 3: but everyone who's been in the lineup has gone right.
- 20:22Speaker 3: So what's the one thing that could derail this Braves
- 20:25Speaker 3: team from just steamrolling everybody?
- 20:28Speaker 2: You know?
- 20:28Speaker 9: I think it's really tough to think.
- 20:29Speaker 8: I think it's maybe getting too confident and thinking of,
- 20:31Speaker 8: you know, putting into you know, knowing that you have
- 20:34Speaker 8: this big league and becoming too comfortable. And I feel
- 20:36Speaker 8: like it's a common saying in life in any profession
- 20:39Speaker 8: that once you feel too comfortable, that's when bad things
- 20:41Speaker 8: start to happen. On the injury standpoint, obviously, if you
- 20:44Speaker 8: lose somebody like Chrisale, who's like the anchor you know
- 20:47Speaker 8: of This'sdace, you know of the entire starting road tator,
- 20:50Speaker 8: you lose a guy like Matt Olsen or Drake Baldwin,
- 20:53Speaker 8: you know, you don't want that to happen. You don't
- 20:54Speaker 8: want any injuries to happen or anything like that. But
- 20:56Speaker 8: beyond that, I think it's the idea of just being comfortable.
- 20:59Speaker 8: You know, you have a nine game lead right now,
- 21:02Speaker 8: you got through arguably a pretty tough stretch right now
- 21:04Speaker 8: playing with the Cubs. They're going for the sweep today.
- 21:06Speaker 8: They took two out of one at the Dodgers. You know,
- 21:08Speaker 8: they played a really good home road series where they
- 21:10Speaker 8: had a ten game road trip, three city road trip.
- 21:14Speaker 8: You know, obviously took down for their first series loss
- 21:17Speaker 8: against the very good Priners team that has a really
- 21:19Speaker 8: good rotation. This team has gone through it all so
- 21:22Speaker 8: far in this season, and I think I think there
- 21:24Speaker 8: really isn't an area that there needs to be worried out. Besides,
- 21:27Speaker 8: maybe you know, an unfortunate injury that happens. But as
- 21:29Speaker 8: we can see, other guys are going to be able
- 21:31Speaker 8: to step up to the play, whether it's you know,
- 21:33Speaker 8: Bryce Helder, whether it's Dubond, whether it's Yaz right now,
- 21:36Speaker 8: and maybe other players right now that just haven't mentioned
- 21:38Speaker 8: right now that are going to come out in the
- 21:39Speaker 8: future because everybody knows they have a role to play,
- 21:42Speaker 8: they have, you know, a plant willing to execute. And
- 21:44Speaker 8: also there's high expectations for this team every single year.
- 21:47Speaker 8: That's what I've learned, you know, being down here in Atlanta,
- 21:49Speaker 8: you know, coming from Phoenix, where there wasn't as much
- 21:52Speaker 8: you know following, you know, with the baseball team because
- 21:54Speaker 8: it's such a transplant city here in Atlanta through the South.
- 21:57Speaker 8: As I was making my driver right here, this is
- 21:59Speaker 8: truly break country. You see it everywhere you go. The
- 22:02Speaker 8: Walmart down the street for me, has a huge Brave section.
- 22:05Speaker 8: Everywhere I go, there's flags everywhere, and they want to
- 22:07Speaker 8: be able to meet those expectations for the fans that
- 22:09Speaker 8: just go out there every single day and watch and play,
- 22:11Speaker 8: and they feel that and they feed off a bit.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Do Braves fans come out to regular season games that
- 22:17Speaker 4: was a facetious question because I.
- 22:19Speaker 9: Was a bombing failed. Did you see the attendance last night?
- 22:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that was a facetious question. But my thing with
- 22:26Speaker 4: we always talk about the Dodgers. The Dodgers they start
- 22:28Speaker 4: running away with their division. The Braves are actually running
- 22:32Speaker 4: away with the division right now. You go back to
- 22:35Speaker 4: twenty twenty four when Sale was the cy Young Award
- 22:38Speaker 4: winner and he kind of ran away with it. People
- 22:41Speaker 4: remember the end of the season where he wasn't able
- 22:43Speaker 4: to make his last start because of his back. Is
- 22:46Speaker 4: there a case they're a scenario because they're looking at
- 22:49Speaker 4: it right now where they start skipping Sale starts? Would
- 22:53Speaker 4: Sail even allow that because of the horse that he is?
- 22:57Speaker 4: And is there even any backing to it where it's like, well,
- 23:00Speaker 4: you know, if we skip a start in July, skip
- 23:02Speaker 4: two in August, two in September, we keep him healthier.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Or do you think the Braves aren't built like that
- 23:10Speaker 4: and Chris salees not built like that?
- 23:12Speaker 5: Well?
- 23:12Speaker 8: I think, for one, it's going to be really tough
- 23:14Speaker 8: to have Chris Sale, just what the competitor he is
- 23:16Speaker 8: is ask him to skip the start, right But you
- 23:18Speaker 8: look at the pitching that that the Braves have right now.
- 23:21Speaker 8: I mean, you know, for for a rotation that heading
- 23:22Speaker 8: into the season had a lolid looming questions, there's been
- 23:25Speaker 8: a lot of guys that have been able to step up.
- 23:26Speaker 8: Of course Bryce Elder has been one of them.
- 23:28Speaker 9: But last night we.
- 23:29Speaker 8: Saw Grant Holmes, who had him pitch in like nine
- 23:31Speaker 8: or ten days, come off, make a spot start on Tuesday,
- 23:35Speaker 8: I believe, sorry about that on Tuesday and come in,
- 23:37Speaker 8: you know, and they also have guys throughout the entire
- 23:39Speaker 8: bulpen right now who can come in and start. You know,
- 23:41Speaker 8: Martin Perez yesterday, for example, veteran who's been around the league,
- 23:45Speaker 8: has pitched in big games, has seen some of the
- 23:47Speaker 8: best hitters, comes in and pitches an inning and relief
- 23:50Speaker 8: and that's it. And he's still, you know, probably slated
- 23:52Speaker 8: to make a start down the road.
- 23:53Speaker 9: Is what why said.
- 23:55Speaker 8: Just to be able to give that relief to they have,
- 23:57Speaker 8: you know, a very exciting pitcher. And Diddier went this,
- 24:00Speaker 8: who is just twenty years old. It's like I said yesterday,
- 24:03Speaker 8: like he's not even old enough to buy a beer
- 24:05Speaker 8: on the concourse or at the battery, but he's pitching
- 24:07Speaker 8: in major league games and doing a good job and
- 24:10Speaker 8: just being out there and learning on the fly. You know,
- 24:12Speaker 8: that's a tough ask to be able to do, and
- 24:14Speaker 8: so they have plenty of depth to be able to
- 24:16Speaker 8: do that where they're able to maybe preserve a couple
- 24:18Speaker 8: of their key guys down the road and give them
- 24:20Speaker 8: a little bit of help. So there definitely is leeway
- 24:22Speaker 8: right now to be able to do that if they
- 24:24Speaker 8: want it, to go out and execute that.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Hey, sus wll Matt Olson never get a day off.
- 24:30Speaker 3: We asked what waye He said no, But I mean
- 24:33Speaker 3: he's an eight hundred and twenty three consecutive games.
- 24:35Speaker 7: He's not even.
- 24:36Speaker 3: A third of the way to cal Ripken yet. Do
- 24:39Speaker 3: we think he'll get a day off or will he
- 24:41Speaker 3: make it?
- 24:41Speaker 7: You say a thousand?
- 24:42Speaker 3: Let's I mean, obviously injuries could derail this, which we're
- 24:45Speaker 3: hoping nothing happens.
- 24:46Speaker 7: But well, he just.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Keep playing, keep playing, keep playing. At what point does
- 24:50Speaker 3: he say, you know what, guys, I'm gonna take.
- 24:52Speaker 9: A day Yeah.
- 24:54Speaker 8: I don't think there's any way where he takes a
- 24:56Speaker 8: day off. I mean, he's just a ascid to the
- 24:58Speaker 8: lineup and also defensively too.
- 25:00Speaker 9: We got to remember he's a goal glove winner in
- 25:02Speaker 9: the past.
- 25:03Speaker 8: And I think the fascinating thing about Matt Olsen is
- 25:05Speaker 8: when I was growing up in the Bay Area following
- 25:08Speaker 8: the A's, you know, I remember when he got drafted.
- 25:10Speaker 8: I remembered him watching him play in Stockton for the
- 25:12Speaker 8: Stockton Ports when he was starting in his minor league career.
- 25:15Speaker 8: And to see the way he's ascended into the player
- 25:17Speaker 8: he has today, I think doesn't surprise me at all
- 25:20Speaker 8: and shouldn't surprise a lot of people because he's always
- 25:22Speaker 8: had that work euth that he's always had this like
- 25:24Speaker 8: quiet leadership to him where I think his presence in
- 25:26Speaker 8: the clubhouse is enough. And the way he goes about
- 25:28Speaker 8: his business in the cage on the field, and then
- 25:31Speaker 8: the production that he's able to replicate and go out
- 25:33Speaker 8: there every single way and do it, I think it means.
- 25:35Speaker 9: A lot to the clubhouse, you know.
- 25:36Speaker 8: And I think I don't think there's any way where
- 25:38Speaker 8: he is voluntarily going to be like, nah, man, I'm
- 25:40Speaker 8: just finna chill today. You know, he's going to be
- 25:42Speaker 8: out there. He's going to go out there every day
- 25:44Speaker 8: and just put in the production. Especially, you know, it
- 25:46Speaker 8: doesn't matter if there's the cushion that they have right now.
- 25:48Speaker 8: At the end of the day, you can have as
- 25:50Speaker 8: big as the cushion you have, but if you don't
- 25:52Speaker 8: win the last game of the season doesn't matter. And
- 25:54Speaker 8: I think for this team to be able to reach
- 25:56Speaker 8: that point, Olson's going to be an integral part of
- 25:58Speaker 8: that lineup.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Here's here's the thing.
- 26:01Speaker 4: When Aj is on the show and there's a reporter
- 26:03Speaker 4: when he comes into town, he expects you to buy
- 26:06Speaker 4: him dinner or get him something for free. I know
- 26:09Speaker 4: you just start with the Braves and they don't have
- 26:12Speaker 4: the freeze running yet, but I think they're trying to
- 26:15Speaker 4: bring the freeze back.
- 26:16Speaker 5: Is that correct? You haven't seen them run?
- 26:18Speaker 4: Ye?
- 26:18Speaker 9: Ran on Tuesday. I saw the freeze running perfect.
- 26:22Speaker 5: Perfect.
- 26:23Speaker 4: I need you and AJ wants you to get a
- 26:26Speaker 4: matchup where Aj gets to run against the freeze.
- 26:30Speaker 8: Okay, do you guys have any insurance to cover that.
- 26:32Speaker 8: I don't want any amstring injuries or anything to happen.
- 26:35Speaker 9: He don't worry about. I got got it. I'll do
- 26:38Speaker 9: my best. I'll try to.
- 26:39Speaker 8: I'm the new guy, though, so if I can't make
- 26:41Speaker 8: something happen, I don't know. But you know, if he
- 26:44Speaker 8: wants to go to a super fun down the street
- 26:45Speaker 8: at the Battery. I can make that happen, but I'll
- 26:47Speaker 8: try to pull some strings.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Yeah, hit me, he's you can put on his resume.
- 26:51Speaker 4: He's run the Sausage race. What else have you done?
- 26:54Speaker 4: Aj you've run? What other mascot races have you run?
- 27:00Speaker 7: No, Kratz, you were the mascot. I'm not a mascot.
- 27:02Speaker 3: I played, but by the way, I also took the
- 27:06Speaker 3: tools down at one point.
- 27:07Speaker 7: When I.
- 27:10Speaker 3: So two bit the drill could win for the first
- 27:12Speaker 3: time all year, I tackled all the rest of them.
- 27:15Speaker 3: So yeah, no, I enjoy mascot races. They're fun. I
- 27:19Speaker 3: want to be I want to do the hot Dog Race,
- 27:21Speaker 3: and I also would like to do the President's Race
- 27:22Speaker 3: if I ever get to a National's Park again. But yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 3: I wouldn't race the Freeze though, because first of all,
- 27:29Speaker 3: I know that I'm going to lose, and I don't
- 27:30Speaker 3: like to do things where I know I'm going to lose.
- 27:33Speaker 8: Yeah, my my tox and trade is when I saw
- 27:35Speaker 8: the Breeze make that run, I was like, huh, I
- 27:38Speaker 8: might have a chance to beat them, but we all
- 27:40Speaker 8: know that's not going to happen.
- 27:41Speaker 3: No, No, there's like when like, hardly anybody that could
- 27:44Speaker 3: beat him, and most of them are pretty fast.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, didn't Frank Corr try it?
- 27:50Speaker 3: Didn't, you know, he's lost a few times? Didn't Uh,
- 27:52Speaker 3: didn't Frank Corror? Someone try it and they and I
- 27:54Speaker 3: thought they you them are lost. I thought it was
- 27:56Speaker 3: somebody someone on the Braves broadcast. Paul Burchett do that.
- 27:59Speaker 3: I'd like to see Paul Bird tray at one time.
- 28:03Speaker 2: I don't know how that would go. Paul Bird.
- 28:05Speaker 7: Is he fast? It's a picture, right, I mean, yeah.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Pictures run a lot. Doesn't mean that they're fast. I
- 28:13Speaker 1: mean some some are, but you know some are. There
- 28:16Speaker 1: were a few guys didn't like Max Freed used to
- 28:18Speaker 1: pinch run or something. Just speaking of former Braves. I
- 28:21Speaker 1: think he did it a few times headline.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Yeah, Clarity did it. I think for what Flarity did
- 28:26Speaker 3: it for the Cardinals. I think a couple of times too.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Yeah, there are a few guys. I mean, Lorenzo obviously
- 28:31Speaker 1: can move. He's a great athlete. Anyway, we're going off topic. Jesus,
- 28:34Speaker 1: this was great. Congratulations again, great to catch up with you.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Looking forward to more combos about the Braves. We'll catch
- 28:40Speaker 1: you soon, man.
- 28:41Speaker 9: Thanks so much.
- 28:42Speaker 8: I appreciate and just now that I'm here right now,
- 28:44Speaker 8: I know a lot of people say Cano because of Robinson.
- 28:46Speaker 8: He's made my life very hard. My last name is
- 28:49Speaker 8: pronounced conno. I'm Mexican, so there's no accent over the oh,
- 28:52Speaker 8: so it's conne.
- 28:53Speaker 5: I know.
- 28:53Speaker 8: We spent the whole year at Baseball America and I
- 28:55Speaker 8: never said anything. But when I got here, my mom said,
- 28:57Speaker 8: the first thing you got to do is make sure
- 28:59Speaker 8: they pronounce your last name the rightway. So it's kind
- 29:01Speaker 8: of you know, it's all good. I just wanted to
- 29:04Speaker 8: get that out there before I got an angry call
- 29:05Speaker 8: from my mom.
- 29:06Speaker 2: You should have told me.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I would have said it last year on hot sheet
- 29:09Speaker 1: on Baseball America. Better late than ever, though we've we've
- 29:12Speaker 1: had this discussion. There are some players in baseball who
- 29:15Speaker 1: will come out years later. Right I'm forgetting any on
- 29:18Speaker 1: the top of my head right now, AJ, But remember
- 29:19Speaker 1: there's been a few where they'll come out suddenly and
- 29:21Speaker 1: be like, just so you know, it's pronounced like this.
- 29:25Speaker 3: I remember Ottavino got me one time in the postseason,
- 29:28Speaker 3: got us because we were calling him Otavino.
- 29:31Speaker 7: He didn't.
- 29:31Speaker 3: He was Ottavino Aronado. They can't. The Rockies PR guy
- 29:36Speaker 3: was like, it's Ronado, not Aeronado, like or like a
- 29:40Speaker 3: pirate in the in the guy.
- 29:42Speaker 7: I put this on my Instagram.
- 29:43Speaker 3: By the way, Uh the guy in Cleveland who was
- 29:46Speaker 3: the Pia guys, the only pe guy who came down
- 29:48Speaker 3: and actually asked me how to say my last name?
- 29:50Speaker 3: And he passed away, so rip to Bob, but he
- 29:54Speaker 3: came He was the only guy who actually came down
- 29:56Speaker 3: and said, hey, how do you pronounce your last name?
- 29:58Speaker 3: I like to hear from the guys themselves, So legend
- 30:01Speaker 3: for that.
- 30:02Speaker 1: That's one big one other. Yeah, that is big time.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I'll always remember. I was like announcing news on MLB
- 30:08Speaker 1: back in the day on MLB Network and they were
- 30:10Speaker 1: deciding on Rue and Reu. I just remember super weird,
- 30:13Speaker 1: Like we were getting calls They're like, okay, go with
- 30:15Speaker 1: Rue and then they were like, no way, actually it's for.
- 30:17Speaker 2: You, go with for you. I was like, what is
- 30:18Speaker 2: going on? And so eventually it was Reu. But it
- 30:21Speaker 2: was weird.
- 30:21Speaker 4: The one that gets me is is MOOKI or Mooky
- 30:24Speaker 4: because Ken is like I lean on Ken. If Ken
- 30:26Speaker 4: says somebody's name the right way, it's Mooky. He says Mooky.
- 30:31Speaker 4: He says, that's like.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Some accent thing that's going on there. It's not that.
- 30:35Speaker 1: It's it's mooky. AJ helped me out on that one.
- 30:39Speaker 7: It's Mooky. I played with MOOKI it's Mooky.
- 30:41Speaker 9: Yeah, it's I did.
- 30:43Speaker 5: That's Chris Jiminez or Chris Jimenez. It's Chris jim And.
- 30:46Speaker 1: As now this is becoming a nightmare. Which is an
- 30:50Speaker 1: inside park?
- 30:53Speaker 9: What park? What a debate that I spark right now?
- 30:57Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, exactly. This is what happens, you know, when
- 31:00Speaker 1: you do it two hours stri every day. So all right,
- 31:02Speaker 1: we're gonna go so you can get back to work.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Thank you, Aye, it was great to talk to you.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Appreciate you.
- 31:07Speaker 9: Thanks you guys. Thank you
