A deadly tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis, has been confirmed in Washington’s wildlife — found in a young fox kit and now also in squirrels, proving it’s established in the local ecosystem. This parasite, which can cause aggressive, cancer-like cysts in the liver, cycles through rodents and canines like foxes and coyotes — and even humans if exposed to eggs.
