- 0:15Speaker 1: Hey, everybody. Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark. I'm Megan, I'm Wendy,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and today we are wrapping up our marathon of holiday
- 0:21Speaker 1: movie reviews with a Holiday Spectacular, a dual timeline Hallmark movie.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Is it sure cool? Grandma telling the story to her granddad. Oh? Yes,
- 0:33Speaker 1: you're right, You're right, You're right, You're right. Before we
- 0:36Speaker 1: tell you our thoughts on this spectacular movie, we would
- 0:40Speaker 1: like to invite you to follow us outside of the podcast.
- 0:42Speaker 1: You can find us on Instagram in two different places.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Our main account is at Megan and Wendy. We also
- 0:48Speaker 1: have a Hallmark account run by Wendy, which is at
- 0:51Speaker 1: Girls Gone Homework. I love the Hallmark community, the Instagram
- 0:55Speaker 1: community on Hallmark. That's a fun place. We'd love for
- 0:57Speaker 1: you to hang out with us there.
- 0:59Speaker 2: You can also join our awesome Facebook group called Girls
- 1:03Speaker 2: Gone Hallmark. I will leave a link in the show notes,
- 1:06Speaker 2: or you could search it in.
- 1:07Speaker 1: The Facebook app. It's fun. Got there's some great people there.
- 1:12Speaker 1: That was pretty much fun.
- 1:13Speaker 2: You can also email us at Megan Andwindy at gmail
- 1:16Speaker 2: dot com with your reviews of these movies, or thoughts
- 1:20Speaker 2: on the podcast, or general hellos. We'll take too so
- 1:26Speaker 2: give us a shout.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah, make your voice heard. Something you may not know
- 1:30Speaker 1: if you're a new listener of Girls Gone Homework, as
- 1:32Speaker 1: we used to exist as an umbrella under our other
- 1:35Speaker 1: podcast called Long Story Short with Megan and Wendy, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: we only recently moved these episodes into their very own
- 1:41Speaker 1: Girls Cone Hallmark Home, which I'm very glad that we did.
- 1:44Speaker 1: But what that means is technically we're like a brand
- 1:45Speaker 1: new podcast with a ton of episodes. So if you
- 1:49Speaker 1: love our podcast, we would love it if you would
- 1:50Speaker 1: take just a quick second and leave a five star
- 1:52Speaker 1: rating and a review. That means like a few words
- 1:55Speaker 1: about why you love us in the Apple podcast app.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Please let's talk about Hallmark Okay? Can I can I
- 2:02Speaker 1: just make a quick mention real quick? Oh not about Hallmark, yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 1: but about about our music for the podcast sounds like
- 2:12Speaker 1: British Bakeoff one hundred percent and not your fault.
- 2:17Speaker 2: So I don't know why you're saying sorry, but I
- 2:19Speaker 2: listened to our couple of our episodes earlier this week.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I just think the music sounds so much like the
- 2:25Speaker 2: Great British Bakeoff.
- 2:26Speaker 1: You're absolutely right, it's funny. We Yeah, I mean, we
- 2:31Speaker 1: both we picked it, we mutually chose it. But as
- 2:35Speaker 1: I was adding it, I thought, this sounds exactly like
- 2:37Speaker 1: the intro to the bake off. So maybe next year,
- 2:39Speaker 1: well we'll have new music come January. Yeah, exactly exciting
- 2:45Speaker 1: first up in Hallmark News. This is not new news,
- 2:48Speaker 1: but it's not something we've discussed and maybe the listeners
- 2:51Speaker 1: don't know that Hallmark has partnered with Hilton. They have
- 2:55Speaker 1: Hallmark Holiday sweets themed according to them, to fan favorite
- 3:01Speaker 1: countdown to Christmas movies. They have three locations, the Hilton Chicago,
- 3:06Speaker 1: the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, and Hilton Las Vegas at
- 3:10Speaker 1: Resorts World. I just want to say, we looked up
- 3:13Speaker 1: the rates for the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. It was
- 3:17Speaker 1: like a thousand dollars a night, get out of town.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Nobody's paid for that sixteen hundred bucks. I was like,
- 3:24Speaker 1: I would love to go do that for like a
- 3:27Speaker 1: twenty five percent of that price. Seriously, who is paid?
- 3:31Speaker 1: Just imagine this stuff being like, you know, touched and
- 3:36Speaker 1: used it. Yeah, I'm not that interested in being the
- 3:38Speaker 1: second person to stay in these suites. No, you want
- 3:40Speaker 1: to be the first person, right, I want to be
- 3:43Speaker 1: I want a fresh sweet what I would love if
- 3:47Speaker 1: Since we're close to their invite us down, we'll cover it.
- 3:52Speaker 1: We'll talk about it here on the podcast, we will
- 3:54Speaker 1: put it on our blog. I pre the place then, yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 1: let me in. Yeah, I just want to see it.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I don't need to stay there. Correct. Yeah? Interesting? What
- 4:04Speaker 1: else you got? And another Hallmark collaboration. I don't know
- 4:09Speaker 1: if you've heard about this, but Hallmark offers live streams
- 4:14Speaker 1: of Christmas towns. They're called Christmas Camps and they go
- 4:19Speaker 1: live I believe on December first. They have five towns,
- 4:23Speaker 1: Harbor Springs, Michigan, Saint Paul, Minnesota, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Saint Petersburg, Florida,
- 4:30Speaker 1: and Corning, New York. They are live streaming from ten
- 4:33Speaker 1: am until ten pm.
- 4:35Speaker 2: So it's like a small town street that we're looking at,
- 4:38Speaker 2: like if.
- 4:39Speaker 1: You want to get in on. They call them Real
- 4:41Speaker 1: Life Hallmark Channel Christmas Towns. I can't fully understand the
- 4:47Speaker 1: driving force behind.
- 4:49Speaker 2: This unless you're someone who lives in southern California who
- 4:52Speaker 2: doesn't have like gets a snowy downtown Christmas scene. However,
- 4:57Speaker 2: Saint Petersburg, Florida doesn't have that eat.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So No, Oh, have you seen the ads for Enchant,
- 5:05Speaker 1: the new Disney movie. No, that's Disenchanted and is the
- 5:10Speaker 1: world's largest Christmas light Maize and village. That's what they're
- 5:13Speaker 1: showing you in Saint Petersburg, Florida. I don't want to
- 5:16Speaker 1: watch that on the internet, you know. I months ago,
- 5:19Speaker 1: a year ago, the timing I don't remember. I walked
- 5:22Speaker 1: into my parents' house and on their TV was the
- 5:24Speaker 1: bald Eagle Cam live from Big Beer, California. Because they
- 5:27Speaker 1: were watching the bald eagles that were sitting on their
- 5:29Speaker 1: nest waiting for their their offspring hatch. Yeah, that's more
- 5:34Speaker 1: exciting to me. Way into it, and they're like, oh,
- 5:37Speaker 1: it's Jackie and Chance. I don't remember. They knew their
- 5:40Speaker 1: names and how they had had an egg that had
- 5:42Speaker 1: hatched but that didn't survive, and so everyone was all
- 5:44Speaker 1: in on this new baby bald eagle. I think that's
- 5:48Speaker 1: thrilling on the screen. Yeah, that's cute. Cuts. Let's talk
- 5:53Speaker 1: a holiday spectacular.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Mm hmmm, you want your synopsis all right? In nineteen
- 5:59Speaker 2: fifty eight, Maggie is an heiress from Philadelphia who puts
- 6:02Speaker 2: her high society wedding plans on hold. In order to
- 6:05Speaker 2: sneak up to New York City to make her secret
- 6:08Speaker 2: dream come true, dancing live on stage in the Christmas
- 6:12Speaker 2: Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. Stars Gina Claire Mason,
- 6:18Speaker 2: Derek Clenna, Eve Plumb and and Margaret and features the
- 6:22Speaker 2: Radio City Rackets.
- 6:24Speaker 1: This was filmed in January and February and upstate New
- 6:26Speaker 1: York as well as in New York City. Julie Shermanwolf
- 6:29Speaker 1: has a photo that she posted to Twitter showing how
- 6:32Speaker 1: they had shut down the street in front of Radio
- 6:34Speaker 1: City Music Hall, which I would imagine as a writer
- 6:37Speaker 1: seeing that happen for your movies, pretty dang exciting.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say that's super cool. When we had
- 6:42Speaker 2: her on the podcast back, was that in twenty twenty
- 6:45Speaker 2: or early twenty twenty one?
- 6:47Speaker 1: Early twenty twenty one? Didn't we ask her if she
- 6:50Speaker 1: went to set after she writes some movies? We didn't.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It might have been a question I had but didn't ask.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I can't remember.
- 6:56Speaker 1: You think we did ask that. I think we did
- 6:59Speaker 1: ask that, and she said it depends on I think
- 7:02Speaker 1: a number of factors whether the writer is there. Okay, okay,
- 7:06Speaker 1: but she appeared to be there. She posted a number
- 7:08Speaker 1: of photos.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and she lives in Connecticut, right, Yes, how close
- 7:12Speaker 2: is Connecticut people.
- 7:13Speaker 1: To New York? Connecticut to New York. People live in
- 7:15Speaker 1: Connecticut and work in the city.
- 7:17Speaker 2: So geography not my strong suit. Okay, so yeah, maybe
- 7:22Speaker 2: she just popped in for the day or whatever.
- 7:24Speaker 1: That's cool. I think she was there a lot.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Gina Clare Mason plays Maggie. She played Glinda in Broadway's Wicked,
- 7:32Speaker 2: beginning in April twenty nineteen. Of course, the pandemic closed
- 7:35Speaker 2: Broadway for a number of months. I was lucky enough
- 7:39Speaker 2: to see her last December in that role, and she
- 7:43Speaker 2: shortly left Wicked right after that in early twenty twenty two.
- 7:48Speaker 1: She has that Glinda look about her.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know what's funny is like I wonder
- 7:53Speaker 2: if she left Wicked to do this movie.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Maybe, But you know, it's funny because what you say
- 7:58Speaker 1: that she was in it in twenty maybe it was
- 8:00Speaker 1: that she was the standby from twenty fifteen to twenty
- 8:04Speaker 1: seventeen and then came back as the lead Glinday, Yes,
- 8:07Speaker 1: that's correct. Okay, my daughter saw us a playbill, so
- 8:10Speaker 1: I went and pulled it down just to make sure,
- 8:11Speaker 1: Like that's who we actually saw. Yeah, it was her.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Derek Clenna, who plays John in this movie. I mean
- 8:18Speaker 1: John anyway. Uh. He is a Tony nominated Broadway actor
- 8:23Speaker 1: as well for his role in Jagged Little Pill. He
- 8:25Speaker 1: was also in Anastasia and The Bridges of Madison County.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Hold on, were you are you familiar at all with him? No?
- 8:31Speaker 1: Because I've never seen any of those shows. Yeah, but
- 8:35Speaker 1: I feel like, if we're going to have a Broadway
- 8:38Speaker 1: star in a movie, look, I'm here for it. But
- 8:40Speaker 1: could the guide sing or dance or something? We got
- 8:43Speaker 1: one line of just nuts roasting and that's.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It, I know, but that is in my Did you
- 8:50Speaker 2: see that? He sounded like heaven? What a voice on that?
- 8:55Speaker 1: Dude? Agree?
- 8:57Speaker 2: Yeah, but I was expecting something more like I wanted
- 9:01Speaker 2: a song and dance from them. But this, I guess,
- 9:05Speaker 2: was not a musical. So I don't know.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Maybe we need another musical. If we're going to get
- 9:10Speaker 1: these Broadway stars, put them to work.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Well, wasn't it Julie Sherman's woof?
- 9:15Speaker 1: Didn't she have another movie with some Broadway stars in't it?
- 9:20Speaker 1: In fact, she did Royal Holiday that had some Broadway
- 9:26Speaker 1: gets in there, and She mentioned in that interview that
- 9:28Speaker 1: Wendy referenced earlier that the only reason they were able
- 9:31Speaker 1: to get them is because of the pandemic and Broadway
- 9:34Speaker 1: being shut down, and they would never have been able
- 9:36Speaker 1: to get them otherwise.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Sarah Gallo plays Sophia Maggie's friend in this movie. And
- 9:42Speaker 2: she has one acting credit on IMDb and it is
- 9:45Speaker 2: this movie. But I was like what, so I googled
- 9:50Speaker 2: and did some more investigating. She is a stage actress
- 9:54Speaker 2: and has a pretty good resume.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Well, I will link her her.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Resume in our show notes for you, But I thought
- 10:02Speaker 2: she was fantastic in this.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I mean Gena Clare Mason. This is the only screen
- 10:06Speaker 1: acting that she has done. Mm hmmm. I think she
- 10:09Speaker 1: was great. I think she should do more. Mm hmm.
- 10:11Speaker 1: A couple notes about the Rockets. Oh, I think we
- 10:15Speaker 1: might have the same one, but go ahead. Well, first
- 10:17Speaker 1: of all, in the early days of the Rockets, a
- 10:21Speaker 1: dancer needed to be between five foot two and five
- 10:23Speaker 1: foot seven. However, nowadays the maximum height is five foot
- 10:27Speaker 1: ten and a half.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Oh interesting is that because they have that kick line
- 10:31Speaker 2: and they don't want like one super tall person there
- 10:34Speaker 2: and one, yes, super small person.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah, there were originally only sixteen women, but it has
- 10:39Speaker 1: now grown to encompass eighty women today.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Now, what's the what's the like general feeling about the rockets?
- 10:47Speaker 2: Like I ask, and my only point of reference is
- 10:52Speaker 2: the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, and we know how problematic that
- 10:57Speaker 2: can be. Is it the same?
- 10:59Speaker 1: Like?
- 11:00Speaker 2: Do they have to be certain weight? Do they have
- 11:01Speaker 2: to be certain height? Do they have to Are they
- 11:04Speaker 2: getting paid pennies?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Do you know? I don't know anything about what they
- 11:07Speaker 1: get paid. I would imagine they have to be a
- 11:09Speaker 1: certain weight, although I've never I don't know any of
- 11:13Speaker 1: that information there. I want to say one comment I
- 11:17Speaker 1: have about that for a bigger conversation. Oh yeah, I
- 11:20Speaker 1: know we're headed. But there are precision dancers. I think
- 11:25Speaker 1: they're considered to be highly trained, incredible dancers. I don't
- 11:31Speaker 1: know what the opinion is of the organization as a whole.
- 11:34Speaker 1: It's a damn delight. If you ever are in New
- 11:36Speaker 1: York at the holidays.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Well I was last year and oh they closed. They
- 11:40Speaker 2: went dark because it was kind of the rise of Omicron.
- 11:44Speaker 2: We didn't get to see them, but we weren't planning
- 11:46Speaker 2: on it because I was like the Rockets, but after
- 11:49Speaker 2: seeing this movie makes me think that I would probably
- 11:52Speaker 2: go back and make that a priority to go see.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of those scenes are straight out of
- 11:56Speaker 1: what they actually do, like that nutcracker scene and all that.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah, well, Sydney.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Mesher is a rocket and you might have noticed her
- 12:04Speaker 2: in this movie. She has one hand.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Oh I did not notice.
- 12:08Speaker 2: She joined the troupe in twenty nineteen and she's the
- 12:11Speaker 2: first person with a visible disability ever hired by the
- 12:14Speaker 2: Radio City Rockets. I will link a article about her
- 12:18Speaker 2: in the show notes.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Oh, thank you for sharing that. Yes, are you ready
- 12:22Speaker 1: for first impressions? Yes, we need to talk about diversity.
- 12:28Speaker 2: H Yeah, well yeah I have those notes too.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Definitely. My first impression is I freaking love a dance movie. Yeah, yes,
- 12:37Speaker 1: I do love.
- 12:38Speaker 2: A dance movie. I don't it's maybe I was a
- 12:41Speaker 2: dancer in a former life or.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I don't know. I love a dance movie. Me too.
- 12:46Speaker 1: And it was actual roquettes dancing on stage. It's really
- 12:50Speaker 1: funny when they do the cut ins on, like the
- 12:52Speaker 1: close up of like Gina Clair Mason, who is a
- 12:54Speaker 1: Broadway actress. She can dance, but I don't know if
- 12:57Speaker 1: she can rocket dance. So in the wide scenes, she's
- 12:59Speaker 1: not them Oh interesting, she's making the line she's like
- 13:04Speaker 1: bouncing up and down. Funny. I loved that, Like, yes,
- 13:08Speaker 1: give me the actual rockets, and there was lots of it.
- 13:11Speaker 1: It wasn't just like once or twice. So let's talk
- 13:14Speaker 1: about what we liked. Okay, do game, ky do game.
- 13:16Speaker 1: You know, I think I missed a lot of this,
- 13:18Speaker 1: but when we were watching, there were some marquee pop
- 13:21Speaker 1: ups with like information about the rockets, like when they started. Now,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I only saw one or two of these because I
- 13:27Speaker 1: just didn't notice them, but I liked them when they
- 13:29Speaker 1: would pop up. I wish I had been paying closer
- 13:31Speaker 1: attention to things that they were saying.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Wasn't there a TV show like that pop up pop
- 13:36Speaker 2: up on her video? Yeah, where you get like additional information.
- 13:39Speaker 2: They should re air this with more pop up information.
- 13:44Speaker 1: You should volder Hallmark movies with like bloop about the actors,
- 13:48Speaker 1: about where it was filmed, with did you see that
- 13:51Speaker 1: kind of moment? Call us Hallmark. We got ideas we
- 13:54Speaker 1: could host that. I know, I know. I liked everything
- 13:58Speaker 1: in this movie.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Yeah, from the acting to the costumes to did a
- 14:02Speaker 2: dancing I.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Loved it all. I agree me too. The costumes gorgeous.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Oh, I wonder if those were Oh I love a
- 14:12Speaker 2: period piece from this era. I swear to god, I
- 14:15Speaker 2: lived in this era at some point. I am so
- 14:17Speaker 2: drawn to it. I don't know.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Why were you about to say? I wonder if those
- 14:21Speaker 1: were actual costumes. Yes, if they were, I believe because
- 14:24Speaker 1: there's an Instagram shot of one of the Rockets who
- 14:26Speaker 1: was in the movie, and she's a photoed in between performances,
- 14:29Speaker 1: and she's in one of those gold dresses. The nutcracker
- 14:32Speaker 1: dress for sure, the red and green dress, for sure.
- 14:34Speaker 1: They're all in the actual Yeah show, I have it.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I love that they had this real partnership with the Rockets.
- 14:42Speaker 1: This movie could not have been made to the level
- 14:46Speaker 1: that it was made without that partnership and that buy
- 14:49Speaker 1: in and that access and the stage and all of it.
- 14:52Speaker 1: It made the movie. I agree.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it would have been a terrible production if it wasn't, like,
- 14:58Speaker 2: if it was on some weird sound stage or whatever. Right, wait,
- 15:01Speaker 2: wait a minute, did they actually film this on stage
- 15:04Speaker 2: at Radio City Music Hall?
- 15:07Speaker 1: It certainly looked like it to me.
- 15:09Speaker 2: They weren't using some weird soundstage, I don't think so.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Okay, and it's postseason. I mean, I know there's other
- 15:16Speaker 1: things at Radio City, but they're not doing five shows
- 15:18Speaker 1: a day of the Roquette, so they would have had
- 15:21Speaker 1: other times of the day to have access to the stage.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Well, you know, I actually had that question while watching this.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Do the Rockets only perform during Christmas time?
- 15:30Speaker 1: Yes, that's it.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Yes, So then what happens in the off season with
- 15:35Speaker 2: those dancers?
- 15:36Speaker 1: What do they do?
- 15:37Speaker 2: Do they are they on Broadway? Are they doing different projects?
- 15:40Speaker 1: I'm guessing in the off seasons most Roquets perform as
- 15:43Speaker 1: dancers or actors professionally. The Rockettes season is November eighteenth
- 15:47Speaker 1: through January second this year. I would imagine it's roughly
- 15:51Speaker 1: the same based on how time falls, and the annual
- 15:53Speaker 1: salary of a Roquette is thirty six thousand to thirty
- 15:56Speaker 1: nine thousand. Keeping in mind they only perform for about
- 15:59Speaker 1: six weeks and then I would have imagine they have
- 16:00Speaker 1: maybe a month of rehearsal prior to that. And although
- 16:03Speaker 1: they do not get year round work, the dancers do
- 16:05Speaker 1: receive year round benefits.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Interesting hmm, I really thought Gina Claire Mason was so
- 16:13Speaker 2: great in this. Yeah, there was a way that she
- 16:17Speaker 2: moved through the scenes, like the way that she moved
- 16:19Speaker 2: her body, And I wondered if it was something to
- 16:25Speaker 2: do with like being a stage actress, Like I.
- 16:30Speaker 1: One hundred percent know what you're talking about, do.
- 16:32Speaker 2: You Like when she would leave a scene, it would
- 16:35Speaker 2: be like she would back out of it, like you
- 16:36Speaker 2: don't turn your back to the crowd, right.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Or it just seems I don't know what it was,
- 16:43Speaker 1: but it was. It was enjoyable to watch. I thought
- 16:47Speaker 1: she gave great faces too, Like I just really really
- 16:51Speaker 1: enjoyed her so much. Yeah, she had a real awareness
- 16:54Speaker 1: of her body that I don't think is common in
- 16:57Speaker 1: screen actors. Yes, yes, I want people to go back
- 17:02Speaker 1: and watch that, like if you missed it the first time,
- 17:04Speaker 1: like if you if you see this movie again in
- 17:06Speaker 1: a repeat, like just pay close attention to that. Yes, yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you know. As I was watching this, much like my
- 17:14Speaker 1: experience with watching Hall Alcoholly. While I was watching it,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I was very aware that I was enjoying watching it,
- 17:21Speaker 1: and I turned to my husband halfway through the movie,
- 17:24Speaker 1: just like I did at the end of Hall the Holly,
- 17:26Speaker 1: and I was like, what do you think? And he's like, eh,
- 17:29Speaker 1: what was this man? Why you I don't know. I
- 17:35Speaker 1: thought you didn't like the jokey Gilmore Girls style movie,
- 17:39Speaker 1: which doesn't surprise me because dude can't stand the Gilmore Girls.
- 17:42Speaker 1: But this is classic. You love the Rockeads. We've seen
- 17:46Speaker 1: the Rockets multiple times. He would see The Rockets every
- 17:48Speaker 1: single time we go to New York. What is there
- 17:51Speaker 1: not to love about this movie? Yeah?
- 17:53Speaker 2: I'm surprised that alone wasn't a draw for him. Yes,
- 17:58Speaker 2: what's his favorite Hallmark movie?
- 17:59Speaker 1: Do you know? Don't know. I'm gonna need you to
- 18:03Speaker 1: ask him.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Okay, I think I might give us some insight on
- 18:06Speaker 2: like what kind of movie he likes.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I'm afraid it's the Hallmark of Yesteryear. Yeah, oh for sure. Well, well, anyway,
- 18:13Speaker 1: this doesn't matter. He didn't like it, moving on? That
- 18:16Speaker 1: bums me up. Is there anything else you liked? No,
- 18:19Speaker 1: what'd you wish for? I think what I wished for
- 18:22Speaker 1: is the bigger conversation that we need to have.
- 18:25Speaker 2: At first, I was like, I didn't wish for anything.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I love this movie. However, while I was watching it
- 18:31Speaker 2: and I was I was wondering at the time, like
- 18:35Speaker 2: how diverse were the Rockets during nineteen forty seven? Like
- 18:41Speaker 2: I was kind of surprise at the number of people
- 18:46Speaker 2: of color that were a part of the troop. Yes,
- 18:51Speaker 2: as like can that be accurate? And then I finished
- 18:53Speaker 2: watching the movie. I didn't think about it again until
- 18:56Speaker 2: I started to put my notes together for this and
- 18:59Speaker 2: I found some information. I'm guessing you found the same. Yes,
- 19:03Speaker 2: it was confirmed by Sleepy Kitty Pod this morning. Whoop, no, sorry,
- 19:08Speaker 2: it was confirmed by Sleepy Kitty Pod on Twitter that
- 19:11Speaker 2: the Rockets were not fully integrated until nineteen eighty eight.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one person that blows my mind. Jennifer Jones
- 19:22Speaker 1: auditioned in eighty seven, joined in eighty eight. Yeah. I
- 19:26Speaker 1: think it's a bigger conversation, and it's more than just
- 19:29Speaker 1: about this movie. I mean, obviously it made me think
- 19:34Speaker 1: we when we first started this would kind of do
- 19:36Speaker 1: a diversity check on these movies, like how did Hallmark rank?
- 19:39Speaker 1: We haven't really done that, And I think Hallmark takes
- 19:46Speaker 1: baby steps in terms of the progress that they make
- 19:48Speaker 1: because they have to bring their audience along with them slowly,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and while if you look at Hallmark's overall catalog of
- 19:57Speaker 1: movies this year. Is it more progressive yes? Is it
- 20:00Speaker 1: more diverse? Yes? Are they telling a variety of stories? Yes? However,
- 20:04Speaker 1: is it enough to say, look, we have Mahogany. Look,
- 20:08Speaker 1: we have two movies that feature Asian American families. But
- 20:11Speaker 1: if you look at the movies, oh, look this movie
- 20:14Speaker 1: has two white stars. Are there any people of color
- 20:18Speaker 1: in this movie? Were there any people of color in
- 20:21Speaker 1: time for him to come Home for Christmas? Or hashtag
- 20:25Speaker 1: Aximus or haul out the Holly? Are we there? And
- 20:29Speaker 1: then how do we feel about Hallmark? I'm glad that
- 20:35Speaker 1: they had people of color in their nineteen forty seven
- 20:38Speaker 1: faux rockets. Some people aren't. Yeah. I read some reviews
- 20:43Speaker 1: and they're like, this is revision, is history, and that's
- 20:45Speaker 1: really interesting. Like are we? I guess it depends how
- 20:49Speaker 1: you look at it, right, Like is Hallmark giving credit
- 20:50Speaker 1: where it's not due? Or is Hallmark trying to say
- 20:53Speaker 1: we are not going to field twenty white dancers in
- 20:57Speaker 1: twenty twenty two, even if it's represented of nineteen forty seven.
- 21:01Speaker 1: That's a good question. I don't know. I don't know either.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I think we might not have we might have to
- 21:08Speaker 2: take this to Julie Sherman Wolf. Oh, yeah, I'm really curious.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I'm sure this had to have been a topic of conversation.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yeah, the roughheats themselves were involved. Great. So I mean,
- 21:22Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Your hands are kind of tied, like if they do,
- 21:26Speaker 2: they're what's the same.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Like, damned if you do, damned if you don't. That's it. Yeah,
- 21:32Speaker 1: I don't disagree. I don't know what the right answer
- 21:34Speaker 1: is here me neither. I wish for something else, tell me?
- 21:37Speaker 1: So did I? I ask myself? Did we need the
- 21:40Speaker 1: romance in this movie? Coar On? It was good, it was,
- 21:45Speaker 1: but but she was engaged. She falls in love with
- 21:51Speaker 1: another man while she's engaged. Yes, it was an engagement
- 21:54Speaker 1: of convenience, and it was an engagement to further their families.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But does it take away from the tale of finding
- 22:04Speaker 1: your own happiness? Well?
- 22:07Speaker 2: I mean she Are you bothered because she lied about it?
- 22:12Speaker 1: No, I'm not bothered because she lied about it. We
- 22:15Speaker 1: took issue with Will Kemp's character falling in love while
- 22:19Speaker 1: he was dating someone else. Fair, fair, fair, what's the difference?
- 22:24Speaker 1: And she her hands were tied, That is the difference.
- 22:27Speaker 1: She didn't have the freedom in her life that Will
- 22:29Speaker 1: Kemp had in his But I don't know how I
- 22:32Speaker 1: feel about it.
- 22:33Speaker 2: She mentioned several times, like, but we're just friends. We're
- 22:37Speaker 2: just friends, So is it naive to think that She thought, like,
- 22:43Speaker 2: this is strictly a friendship, but I kind of have
- 22:47Speaker 2: feelings for this guy too.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I don't think it's naive to think that. But the
- 22:51Speaker 1: second she ends her engagement, she then goes to John
- 22:56Speaker 1: to tell him and says, and I'm falling in love
- 22:59Speaker 1: with you. Is that a realization she had on the
- 23:03Speaker 1: walk from the restaurant. Probably not now. I thought the
- 23:07Speaker 1: love story was very sweet. I was very all in
- 23:10Speaker 1: on the love story. Of course. I wanted them to
- 23:12Speaker 1: end up together. I was like, she's going to support him. Well,
- 23:15Speaker 1: he goes to school, and they're gonna be this cute
- 23:17Speaker 1: New York couple. I wanted that. Yeah, I don't know,
- 23:21Speaker 1: is the struggle enough for this for the I don't know, Okay,
- 23:25Speaker 1: good questions, Megan.
- 23:26Speaker 2: For one last thing, I wish they would have showed
- 23:29Speaker 2: more of Maggie's pursuit in becoming a rocket, like.
- 23:33Speaker 1: One audition and boom, yeah she gets it. Yeah, And
- 23:37Speaker 1: I was like, what you know, it has to be
- 23:40Speaker 1: more than that, right, Sure, DCC takes weeks exactly exactly
- 23:46Speaker 1: if you don't know what we're talking about.
- 23:48Speaker 2: We're talking about making the team Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Yeah,
- 23:51Speaker 2: like it almost to me seemed like I thought she
- 23:56Speaker 2: was taking dance lessons as an adult, like for the
- 23:59Speaker 2: first time.
- 24:00Speaker 1: She was an adult, right, yes, And it's just like
- 24:05Speaker 1: her and.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Her friend and they're like taking dance lessons. This is
- 24:07Speaker 2: what you do when you live in high society Philadelphia
- 24:09Speaker 2: in nineteen forty seven. I guess I don't because you
- 24:12Speaker 2: don't work and.
- 24:12Speaker 1: You're not married. Right. Did she go to college?
- 24:15Speaker 2: Probably not right, right, So I guess you just take
- 24:19Speaker 2: dance lessons during the day and then there just happens
- 24:22Speaker 2: to be an audition and she gets it just like that.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah locally, yeah, well Philadelphia is close right to New York.
- 24:31Speaker 1: It is, But I don't think she. I still think
- 24:34Speaker 1: she wasn't in New York. I mean it was like
- 24:36Speaker 1: they were doing a local audition looking for talent. I agree.
- 24:39Speaker 1: I thought I think it was too easy. Yeah, too easy,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you know, just like a question for you, uh huh?
- 24:47Speaker 2: Would it have been weird at the time, She's like
- 24:50Speaker 2: I'm going to New York for the next couple of weeks,
- 24:52Speaker 2: and I'm not telling you exactly where I'm going or
- 24:55Speaker 2: what I'm doing, but I'll be home.
- 24:57Speaker 1: I thought it was weird, you know. Oh, I'm waiting
- 25:00Speaker 1: on this dress to be made right, to be here
- 25:03Speaker 1: for three or four weeks. Yeah, it was weird to me. Yeah,
- 25:06Speaker 1: what the hell do I know? But I don't know anything, Like,
- 25:09Speaker 1: they had phones back then, but they were like just
- 25:12Speaker 1: like they had no tabs on their daughter. But she
- 25:15Speaker 1: was an adult too, so you know, I don't know,
- 25:18Speaker 1: and staying with a family friend as far as they knew,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and just maybe they just couldn't have them a world
- 25:23Speaker 1: in which she would so strongly disobey their desires for
- 25:27Speaker 1: her thiss obey. Oh god, I can't even That's what
- 25:31Speaker 1: they That's how they felt, I know, but it just
- 25:34Speaker 1: is weird. That's all I have or wished for I have.
- 25:37Speaker 1: But one did you see that? So do I? She
- 25:40Speaker 1: hasn't seen the tree. It's around the corner. What tree
- 25:44Speaker 1: are you talking about? The Rockefeller's on her Christmas tree?
- 25:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what was
- 25:50Speaker 2: interesting in that scene because I visited there last year
- 25:53Speaker 2: and it's packed to the nines, like it's a shoulder
- 25:56Speaker 2: to shoulder. You can't see anything.
- 25:58Speaker 1: People are taking pictures with their iPads, right because they
- 26:01Speaker 1: go and it's like there's nobody there was there even
- 26:06Speaker 1: an ice skating rink. There was not right, I don't know.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I mean, it's clearly a green screen. The tree's not
- 26:11Speaker 1: up in January when they're fo yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 26:14Speaker 1: yeah yeah. So they've recreated the scene. I thought they
- 26:18Speaker 1: did it well, but it's right around the corner. This
- 26:21Speaker 1: reminds me of the time my husband and I were
- 26:23Speaker 1: in New York visiting a friend of his. We said
- 26:25Speaker 1: something about the tree, and the friend had lived there
- 26:27Speaker 1: for eight years and goes, yeah, I've never seen it.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I'm Jewish, And I thought, I can understand not seeking
- 26:35Speaker 1: it out if it doesn't have any meaning to you.
- 26:37Speaker 1: It's not excited, it's not a holiday you celebrate. But
- 26:40Speaker 1: never in eight years have you crossed paths with this
- 26:43Speaker 1: giant tree. Just blew my mind.
- 26:47Speaker 2: There's a lot of stuff around there, stores and shopping
- 26:50Speaker 2: and like food, Like you don't walk over there.
- 26:53Speaker 1: You live there eight years, right, I guess maybe you
- 26:56Speaker 1: stay in your little area. I don't know. Blew my
- 26:58Speaker 1: mind weird?
- 27:00Speaker 2: Did you see that?
- 27:00Speaker 1: I have?
- 27:01Speaker 2: I shared with you off Mike the other day, but
- 27:04Speaker 2: I would love to know if anybody else caught this.
- 27:07Speaker 2: There is one b roll shot of the outside marquee
- 27:10Speaker 2: of the Radio City Music Hall. They show it several times.
- 27:14Speaker 2: They showed the outside marque several times throughout this movie,
- 27:17Speaker 2: but there is one time on the marquee it is
- 27:19Speaker 2: advertised that Conin Gray will be playing on March sixteenth,
- 27:23Speaker 2: and Conin Gray is a current musical artist.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I was like, ooh, somebody missed that. Whoops, whoopsies. Are
- 27:31Speaker 1: you ready to rate a holiday spectacular? I am? Would
- 27:36Speaker 1: you rate it? I rated it? I thought this movie
- 27:39Speaker 1: was really good, really really really good.
- 27:43Speaker 2: I gave it four point seventy five stars. Because I'm
- 27:45Speaker 2: conflicted about the diversity stuff.
- 27:50Speaker 1: I gave it four and a half star. What you
- 27:53Speaker 1: didn't like it four and a half? That's a great rating.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I know. Oh, I mean I felt joy watching this movie.
- 28:03Speaker 1: You know.
- 28:04Speaker 2: As I sat down to make my note today, I
- 28:05Speaker 2: was like, this is a five star movie.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I have nothing to wish for. I loved everything about it.
- 28:08Speaker 1: And then I started to dig and I was like, oh,
- 28:12Speaker 1: that's not good. You know. So I felt the same
- 28:16Speaker 1: way and that, oh, this is a five star movie.
- 28:19Speaker 1: I have nothing to wish for. Things arose in my preparation.
- 28:24Speaker 1: But also the rating system is nebulous. It's ultimately meaningless.
- 28:28Speaker 1: And when I sat here and think, did it bring
- 28:31Speaker 1: me as much joy as Haul Out the Holly or
- 28:36Speaker 1: what's my other five star movie?
- 28:38Speaker 2: Three Wise Men and a Baby the Dudes.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I'm not quite sure it did. It's great. Four and
- 28:44Speaker 1: a half is a great rating.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I just it was so pleasant to watch.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I agree.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I love a dance movie. I just love a dance movie.
- 28:53Speaker 1: I agree with everything you're saying. Okay, great movie. I
- 28:56Speaker 1: recommend it. If you want to know what to watch
- 28:58Speaker 1: this season. This gives me the holiday feels.
- 29:02Speaker 2: What are we reviewing next week?
- 29:05Speaker 1: We are reviewing a fabled holiday and the holiday stocking.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Ryan Pave's really on my list these days, y'all, so
- 29:13Speaker 1: stick around for that one. We will be back with

- 29:25Speaker 1: a review in the Apple Podcast app. Until next time,
