- 0:00From early childhood we are inculcated with the idea of
- 0:04achieving success, becoming foremost and occupying a
- 0:09position of power, prestige or wealth in the world.
- 0:15Parents drum this idea into the mind of their children that they
- 0:18need to study, attain degrees, choose suitable lucrative
- 0:23careers, and marry well to occupy their role in society.
- 0:29A hierarchy is established through this process that treats
- 0:32certain types of careers as prestigious and rewarding and
- 0:37others as low, demeaning, degrading, or somehow of lesser
- 0:42value or importance. Even when the individual takes
- 0:46up the spiritual quest, they have these habits still
- 0:50ingrained in their psyche and wind up through the lens of
- 0:54mental judgement based on them. Categorizing certain activities
- 0:59is better, bigger, more important as compared to others.
- 1:04This can take the form of a subtwick egoism if it is based
- 1:08on the idea of mental or moral superiority, or a form of
- 1:13rajasic egoism if it is based on a need to impose oneself upon
- 1:18others and assert power and control, or even a temasek
- 1:22egoism if it is simply allowing these past impressions to
- 1:26control them without any reflection or thought involved
- 1:31at all. This crops up in the form of
- 1:34treating certain individuals who have been assigned jobs with
- 1:37certain types of public activity or intellectual efforts or
- 1:42management responsibility as more important and more
- 1:46spiritually advanced than those who are set to carry out
- 1:49assigned tasks or who do subordinate tasks for the person
- 1:54having the most visible role and responsibility.
- 1:58Similarly, in many societies, the role of women is treated as
- 2:02a lesser position or value than the activities of the men.
- 2:07In some cultures or religious backgrounds, this is extended to
- 2:10a judgement about the spiritual potential or attainments, and
- 2:15women are thereby excluded from leadership roles in those
- 2:19groups. Clearly, spiritual development
- 2:22is not tied to whether someone takes birth in a male or female
- 2:26body or in any particular group, racial background, or other
- 2:32purely external features of their current birth.
- 2:37It is good to reflect on things that illustrate that everything
- 2:40is based in oneness and the big jobs cannot succeed without the
- 2:44small jobs being done. An intellectual immersed in
- 2:49studies will not survive if there's not a farmer to grow the
- 2:53food, a carrier to move the food, a market to stock the
- 2:57food, and individuals to purchase and store and then
- 3:01prepare the food. All of these smaller jobs are
- 3:05essential to the success of the bigger job.
- 3:09Similarly, scientists tell us that if the ants or the bees
- 3:14were to be exterminated, our human life on this planet would
- 3:19not be tenable. The outer work is not a
- 3:23reflection of the inner spiritual development or
- 3:25maturity. A person could be outwardly seen
- 3:29as important, a head of state or ACEO of a major corporation, and
- 3:35yet be quite immature spiritually.
- 3:38While someone sweeping the dust out of a house may in fact be a
- 3:42quite mature soul. The spiritual realization can
- 3:46come through the path of knowledge, the path of power,
- 3:50the path of interchange, love and devotion, and harmony, the
- 3:54path of service. Each of these elements is
- 3:58essential for the completeness of the creation, and over the
- 4:02course of many lifetimes it is likely that a particular soul
- 4:07has occupied various positions in the external hierarchy while
- 4:12their soul gained the experience and maturity it sought from that
- 4:16particular life experience. There are cases where
- 4:21individuals with extensive academic or intellectual
- 4:24attainments wind up taking on functions that build their
- 4:28ability to serve, to support, to protect, to assist others, and
- 4:34this requires them to undertake roles that are different than
- 4:37their natural academic or intellectual pursuits.
- 4:41These new functions do not take away from the development they
- 4:44have in other fields, but actually may enrich their
- 4:48understanding and their powers of action in the world by adding
- 4:53entirely new areas of focus and capacity.
- 4:58Srioro Bindo observes quote. Of course, the idea of bigness
- 5:03and smallness is quite foreign to the spiritual truth.
- 5:07Spiritually there is nothing big or small.
- 5:11Such ideas are like those of the literary people who think
- 5:14writing a poem is a high work and making shoes or cooking the
- 5:19dinner is a small and low one. But all is equal in the eyes of
- 5:23the spirit, and it is only the spirit within which it is done
- 5:28that matters. It's the same with a particular
- 5:32kind of work. There is nothing big or small.
