- 0:11How life friends, it's shown here it is Tuesday, it is the
- 0:1513th of February and it feels a little bit like a Monday because
- 0:21in my part of the world it was a public holiday yesterday.
- 0:23So today the Monday morning Blues are a hoyed everywhere and
- 0:30people are dragging themselves out of bed.
- 0:32Ah, good work everyone, we can do it.
- 0:34And for those of you who had productive Mondays yesterday,
- 0:37thank you for keeping the world turning while we enjoyed Hobart
- 0:40Regatta Day. And I'm sure very few of us
- 0:43actually celebrated the Hobart Regatta, but that's OK.
- 0:45Public holidays are for everyone, not just those who
- 0:47like boats. But all that aside, I have also
- 0:52got a little bit more of a spacious month ahead as well.
- 0:56I thought I was going to be heading off to my Army base camp
- 0:58training, but that has been pushed back by about, I reckon
- 1:02nine months, nine months. So that's at the end of the year
- 1:05now. So I don't need to be doing 5K
- 1:08runs every morning and pushups and sit ups and pull-ups.
- 1:10I can go easy and have a bit more of a gentlemanly stroll
- 1:16into higher levels of fitness rather than an insane schedule
- 1:20of preparation. Ha.
- 1:22But all that aside, let us go back to the story that we are
- 1:27continuing through as we are now in the third last reading of the
- 1:31book of First Samuel and today. It's all just too much for the
- 1:34poor philistine commanders who just can't quite trust that
- 1:38David isn't going to turn around and kill them on the
- 1:40battlefields. So let us read this story
- 1:43together as we read together. First Samuel, Chapter 29.
- 1:57The entire Philistine army, now mobilised at Aflac and the
- 2:01Israelites, camped at the springs of Jezreel as the
- 2:05Philistine rulers were leading out their troops in groups of
- 2:08hundreds and thousands. David and his men marched at the
- 2:12rear with King Akish, but the Philistine commanders demanded,
- 2:17What are these Hebrews doing here?
- 2:20And Akash told them, this is David, the servant of King Saul
- 2:25of Israel. He's been with me for years, and
- 2:28I've never found a single fault in him from the day he arrived
- 2:32until today. But the Philistine commanders
- 2:35were angry. Send him back to the town you've
- 2:38given him, they demanded. He can't go into the battle with
- 2:41us. What if he turns against us in
- 2:44battle and becomes our adversary?
- 2:47Is there any better way for him to reconcile himself with his
- 2:50master than by handing our heads over to him?
- 2:54Isn't this the same David about whom the women of Israel sing in
- 2:58their dances? Saul has killed his thousands
- 3:02and David his ten thousands. So Akash finally summoned David
- 3:07and said to him, I swear by the Lord that you have been a
- 3:12trustworthy ally. I think you should go with me
- 3:16into battle, for I've never found a single flaw in you from
- 3:20the day you arrived until today. But the other Philistine rulers
- 3:24won't hear of it. Please don't upset them, but go
- 3:28back quietly. What have you ever found in your
- 3:32servant that I can't go and fight the enemies of my Lord the
- 3:36king? But Akish insisted.
- 3:39As far as I'm concerned, you're as perfect as an Angel of God,
- 3:45but the Philistine commanders are afraid to have you with them
- 3:48in the battle. Now get up early in the morning
- 3:51and leave with your men as soon as it gets light.
- 3:56Sir David and his men headed back into the land of the
- 3:58Philistines while the Philistine army went on to Jezreel.
- 4:13Lord, you take reliability to a whole new level here.
- 4:17We are doing our best to be reliable and the thing that is
- 4:22just so mind blowing about the way that you are with us is that
- 4:28when you say something, we just are able to believe it.
- 4:32We can bet the farm because we know that you are true to your
- 4:36word because you are the same yesterday, today and tomorrow
- 4:42throughout all time. The things that you say today,
- 4:48it's as though you're saying it again in 10,000 years time
- 4:51because you are unchanging. Thank you, Lord, for the way
- 4:56that you bring grace and forgiveness and light and life
- 5:03into our lives, not just once, but consistently, again and
- 5:08again. And even though we failed you
- 5:12and we don't deserve it, you continue to be trustworthy and
- 5:16faithful, ever consistent and ever reliable.
- 5:21We just make you the foundation of our life, that every day when
- 5:26we rise and go about our daily tasks, we do this with a
- 5:30surefire knowledge that you are unchanging and you are for us.
- 5:38We love you and we praise you, and we pray all of this in the
- 5:42name of Jesus. I'm in.
