- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 138, Psalm
- 0:20138, and this is a Psalm of David.
- 0:24And so I am excited for this little Psalm.
- 0:29It's got some recurring themes that we've been looking at a lot
- 0:33through. Book 5 of Psalms has some
- 0:36interesting portions of it that I'll kind of highlight for us as
- 0:40we go through. But let's begin reading.
- 0:42I will give you thanks with all my heart.
- 0:45I will sing your praise before the heavenly beings.
- 0:49I will bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks to Your
- 0:53name for Your constant love and truth.
- 0:55You have exalted Your name and Your promise above everything
- 0:59else. On the day I called, You
- 1:02answered me. You increased strength within
- 1:04Me. All the kings on earth will give
- 1:07you thanks, Yahweh. When they hear what You have
- 1:10promised, they will sing of Yahweh's ways, for Yahweh's
- 1:13glory is great. Though Yahweh is exalted, He
- 1:17takes note of the humble, but He knows the haughty from a
- 1:21distance. If I walk into the thick of
- 1:24danger, You will preserve my life from the anger of My
- 1:27enemies. You will extend Your hand.
- 1:30Your right hand will save me. Yahweh will fulfill His purpose
- 1:35for me. Yahweh, your faithful love
- 1:37endures forever. Do not abandon the work of Your
- 1:41hands. Well, what can we get from this
- 1:47little nugget of Scripture? Let's begin.
- 1:49In verses one through three, there is this declaration, just
- 1:53of thanks, of praise, of adoration from David towards
- 1:58God. In verse #1 he says, I'll give
- 2:00you thanks with all my heart. Well, that should be something
- 2:04that we attempt to do as well, where we say, God, I am
- 2:07wholeheartedly, enthusiastically yours, my time, it's yours.
- 2:13My mouth, my expression, my words, my my posts, they are
- 2:18yours. God, my wallet, what I spend my
- 2:22money on, it will be under your command.
- 2:25I will do what you ask with my funds.
- 2:27I'll do what you want with my calendar, with my days, with my
- 2:30weeks, with my weekends. God, what you have declared is
- 2:35what I will enthusiastically do. Lord, even my thoughts are yours
- 2:40because you are the one that is worthy of my gratitude and of my
- 2:46praise. And that's what he says next.
- 2:48I will sing your praise before the heavenly beings.
- 2:52These are the Elohim, this is the Gods, the other spiritual
- 2:58beings that exist. David says God, I am going to
- 3:03sing if you will. I'm going to sing to World's
- 3:06Unknown about how wonderful you are.
- 3:10There's something mentioned many times in scripture.
- 3:14Here is is a great example of it, of the fact that our worship
- 3:20of the Lord is something that is both visible to the spiritual
- 3:25realm, it's visible to spiritual beings.
- 3:28It is disheartening and insulting and derogatory to
- 3:34Satan and his demons. It is the worship and the
- 3:39attention that they crave, but that they are not receiving, and
- 3:45that the Lord is the one who is deserving of it.
- 3:48They refused to worship Him. But when we fallen creatures who
- 3:52cannot even see God when we worship Him, it reemphasizes to
- 3:59the fallen beings that you are stupid.
- 4:03Like you guys are so dumb for not following and worshipping
- 4:08Yahweh and it exalts him all the more.
- 4:12It's something that brings God joy and gladness in his heart to
- 4:20to see his people praising. And you can look at even his
- 4:23interactions with Satan in the book of Job in chapters 1 and 2
- 4:28that God says, have you considered like, oh, hey, Satan,
- 4:32have you checked out Job, How awesome he is?
- 4:36Like, he's one that loves me. He rejects evil.
- 4:40And in chapter 2, even after, you know, Satan brings some
- 4:43trials and temptations into Job's life and Job didn't fall
- 4:48to them, that God goes. And you know, even though you
- 4:53tried to move me against Job, even though you tried to move me
- 4:58against Job, he still follows me even though you tried to move me
- 5:04against him. And so our praise and worship
- 5:08and adoration and obedience of God is something that can be
- 5:12done in the sight of angels and demons, knowing that other
- 5:19beings are seeing what you do and what you say and how you
- 5:24worship. Will that change how you worship
- 5:27this week? Or even, as we're told in
- 5:29Hebrews 12, seeing that we are encompassed with so great with,
- 5:35with such a large cloud of witnesses that ought to affect
- 5:39the way that we live. Where's #2 I will bow down
- 5:44towards your holy temple and give thanks to your name for
- 5:48your constant love and truth. He says, God, I am going to
- 5:54recognize who you are and who I am.
- 5:57And so that's going to cause a physical response in me that I
- 6:02will bow down and I will recognize your authority in my
- 6:07life. And I'm going to recognize the
- 6:09fact that you consistently love me and that your word is truth
- 6:13for my life. It's you are everything God.
- 6:17And so that requires an actual physical response from me.
- 6:21It's not just mental descent that you exist.
- 6:24It actually changes the way that I live my life.
- 6:29Then in the end of verse 2, he says you have exalted your name
- 6:32and your promise above everything else.
- 6:37The King James Version has this particular verse listed here.
- 6:43There's another alternate way that you could phrase this.
- 6:47You have exalted your name and your promise above everything
- 6:49else. You could say something like you
- 6:52have exalted your promise above all your name, or the King James
- 6:57has it. You have exalted your word above
- 7:00your name. What this means if you have a
- 7:03translation that says something like that, is God has made his
- 7:08authority and his promised actions and behavior towards his
- 7:14people of utmost importance. Like God has staked his
- 7:19reputation on his promise. He doesn't just say I'm the God
- 7:24who made the world and so you need to bow before Yahweh.
- 7:29If he did that, certainly he'd be worthy of it.
- 7:31But he he tethered himself to humanity, to promises of
- 7:38redemption, promises of day by day grace and new morning
- 7:43mercies. He has tethered himself to the
- 7:46forgiveness of our sins when we turn in in humble repentance
- 7:51towards Him. And so he tethered himself to
- 7:56his promises to say, my reputation and my name is staked
- 8:00on what I have told you I'm going to do.
- 8:05He says, I, I promise to do this.
- 8:07Aren't I the God that led you out of Egypt?
- 8:10I have promised to do this. Aren't I the God that created
- 8:13the world? And so it means we can believe
- 8:16his promises because he has staked his reputation to it and
- 8:20his reputation is phenomenal. And so because he has a
- 8:23trustworthy track record, when he says, based on my track
- 8:26record, here's what I'm going to do, believe it.
- 8:29We can believe it. This does not mean as very
- 8:34unfortunately I have heard people say that the you know any
- 8:39particular translation or the Bible itself is more important
- 8:45than the name of God. That is solidly not hear what
- 8:50David was communicating. So if you ever hear anyone say
- 8:53something like that, just note they are deeply mistaken on what
- 8:57is being intended by this passage.
- 9:02Verse #3 As an example of this, David says, on the day I called,
- 9:08you answered me. You increased strength within
- 9:11me. So God, you promised me that I
- 9:14would, you know, one day be king.
- 9:15You promised me that I would live, that I would sit on the
- 9:18throne, that my descendants after me would sit on the
- 9:21throne. And when I was in trouble, when
- 9:24I needed you, I called and you answered me.
- 9:27You increased strength within me.
- 9:29So God, I know that you're reliable and that your promises
- 9:33are true versus then four through 6 are the next portion
- 9:39of it. All the kings on earth will give
- 9:41you thanks, Yahweh, when they hear what you have promised.
- 9:46There is joy to be found from the highest positions of
- 9:50government into the lowliest hovels on earth.
- 9:53When we hear about the promises of God and David says even
- 9:57kings, those so often viewed in ancient times as like demigods
- 10:03themselves, he says even the kings of earth, they will
- 10:07experience joy knowing what God himself has promised what what
- 10:12will be their response to the promises of the Lord.
- 10:16Well, verse 5, they will sing of Yahweh's ways for the sorry for
- 10:21Yahweh's glory is great. There is to be singing that
- 10:27erupts as a result of knowing God, knowing God's promises,
- 10:32knowing God's ways, knowing how glorious, how shining, how good
- 10:37he is ought to result in our praise and adoration.
- 10:44Verse number six, though Yahweh is exalted, that even kings sing
- 10:49about him, that they tell of his ways, though Yahweh is exalted,
- 10:55He takes note of the humble man. What a joy that is.
- 11:00Can I tell you I, I am not anyone special.
- 11:07I think I have, you know, probably less than like 1000
- 11:13friends on Facebook and you guys know Facebook friends.
- 11:16Like that's not reality. Like I am just an incredibly
- 11:20small fish in a huge sea. No world leader knows that I
- 11:28exist. No world leader cares about me.
- 11:31No one with a net worth of over like I don't.
- 11:36I actually don't know if I have any super rich friends.
- 11:39I don't think anyone with with a net worth over 500,000 or a
- 11:43million. I don't think any of those
- 11:44people know that I exist. They don't care about me.
- 11:51God is the ultimate 1. He is the one who is the king,
- 11:55the suffering, the God of all other spiritual beings.
- 11:59He is the one that can bless this entire earth.
- 12:03He is the one who is everlasting and eternal.
- 12:06He is the one that has made countless promises, and He takes
- 12:11note of me like the God who made the heavens knows my
- 12:17insignificant speck of a life. And He takes note of me, and He
- 12:23loves me and He died for me. Man, how in the world can I not
- 12:29erupt in praise at that God? Because He is good in every
- 12:34possible way. And he says there that he notes
- 12:38the humble, but he knows the hottie from a distance.
- 12:42There is separation from God, not for those that aren't
- 12:46important enough, but for those who view themselves as too
- 12:49important. It's the rich man who comes to
- 12:52Jesus and says, listen, I've kept all of the 10 commandments
- 12:55and all of the laws. What do I need to do to inherit
- 12:58the Kingdom of heaven? Jesus tells him, well you want
- 13:01to know what you got to do, Sell everything you have and follow
- 13:06me. And the rich man goes no, no,
- 13:10no. Jesus is worth me.
- 13:11Like obeying the easy commands quote UN quote.
- 13:15But when it comes to me laying aside my my pride and my
- 13:19possessions and my net worth, I'm not going to lay that down
- 13:24for Jesus. Jesus isn't worthy of that.
- 13:26My money, my possessions, my status is more important than
- 13:32following Jesus. Well, then there was no
- 13:34relationship that was found there.
- 13:37Can I tell you your greatest opposition to the Lord will not
- 13:42often be just total rejection of God's existence, The thing that
- 13:48will most damage your relationship with God and my
- 13:51relationship with God is pride to say, well, I am too important
- 13:57to apologize to someone else. I am too.
- 14:03I value my possessions too much to give to the Lord's work or to
- 14:08the poor. I believe that I was right and
- 14:12so I will not humble myself before anyone else or Oh well,
- 14:17don't you know that my schedule in my calendar is super
- 14:21important? And so I'm not going to make
- 14:22time for my family. I'm not going to make time for
- 14:26church. I'm not going to make time for
- 14:28discipling and investing in others.
- 14:32Pride is that thing that wrecks us.
- 14:36We learned in James 4. God resists the proud, but he
- 14:40gives grace to the humble. When you come to God and you go,
- 14:43I got nothing, that is someone that God can use.
- 14:47When you come to God and you go, God, I'm imperfect, I'm flawed.
- 14:52I just, I can't seem to stay on the wagon.
- 14:55God goes perfect. That's the kind of person that I
- 14:58can work with. That's the person I can extend
- 14:59grace to. That's the person I want to
- 15:01spend my spirits work on is the person that is humble.
- 15:08May we not be haughty. May we not keep God at a
- 15:11distance with our pride. Instead, may we humble ourselves
- 15:15before Him. Then verse #7 if I walk into the
- 15:19thick of danger, you will preserve my life from the anger
- 15:23of my enemies. I think of Jesus multiple times
- 15:27throughout the Gospels when it actually got a little hairy
- 15:31before the time came that he was actually going to be crucified.
- 15:34So times when they wanted to stone him.
- 15:37So you can look at John 10, you can look at John 5, John 8, all
- 15:44these different instances in which the Sanhedrin, the, the
- 15:50Pharisees, all of those wanted to kill Jesus and Jesus was able
- 15:56to make it out alive. There's even 1 instance
- 15:59mentioned, I believe it was in Nazareth.
- 16:03It's not in the Gospel of John because that's the one that I've
- 16:05walked through over the last couple of years.
- 16:08And it's not the Gospel of Mark because we went through that
- 16:11together on Tabernacle Talks. So it's either Matthew or Luke
- 16:13highlights it. Jesus is in Nazareth and they
- 16:17are going to try to throw him off of a nearby Cliff and just
- 16:23sheer frustration and rage as a result of what he was preaching.
- 16:28And it says Jesus passing through the midst of them like
- 16:31he escaped. And here it makes me think of
- 16:34this certainly as this is a Psalm of David.
- 16:36David himself personally experienced this many times that
- 16:39Saul tried to kill him. The Philistines tried to kill
- 16:42him. He was, you know, kind of sold
- 16:44out by by people locally, even shepherds and things that were
- 16:48there. And so David experienced this.
- 16:51But I love this, that as long as God ordains for us, we are
- 16:57immortal. That we can know I will be fine
- 17:01in my life until such time as God says.
- 17:06All right now I've got a new path for you.
- 17:09This does not mean that we are totally immune from danger, that
- 17:13we can go, OK, well I'll never get in a car accident because I
- 17:16believe then God will protect me.
- 17:19Well, God might have you to go through a car accident, but when
- 17:23you encounter difficulties, you go, OK, this came from the
- 17:26sovereign hand of God. And so I can trust that He has a
- 17:30purpose in it. And if He has protected me from
- 17:35all sorts of evil things that could possibly happen in my
- 17:38life, if you let this one happen, then it happened for a
- 17:42purpose. The end of verse 7.
- 17:43You will extend your hand. Your right hand will save me.
- 17:46This is God's strength, His ability that He is exercising
- 17:50His divine nature and power in order to save.
- 17:56God is not indifferent to us. He is ever reaching out to bless
- 18:02and to benefit. Verse #8 Yahweh will fulfill His
- 18:06purpose for me. Yahweh, your faithful love
- 18:09endures forever. Do not abandon the work of your
- 18:12hands. Here's the prayer God you
- 18:14started something and you have a purpose for my life.
- 18:19I OK, I'm going to level with you guys here and I don't know
- 18:23from who listens if anyone's going to be like you haven't.
- 18:27I have not read the the book the purpose driven life.
- 18:32My pastor Rick Warren from from California and Saddleback
- 18:37Church. I know that might be blasphemy
- 18:39for a couple of you. They're like what you never read
- 18:41it. But here as I read this line,
- 18:44Yahweh will fulfill his purpose for me.
- 18:47I want to have a life that has lived for the purpose that God
- 18:52has for me. I could have a purpose for my
- 18:55life and I could have dreams about what the next, you know,
- 18:59year or five years or 10 years of ministry here at Tabernacle
- 19:04look like for me. But I don't want to be limited
- 19:09by what my purposes and my best ideas are.
- 19:12I want to fulfill God's purpose for my life.
- 19:16But I'm so thankful that the verse doesn't say I will fulfill
- 19:19Yahweh's purpose for me. He says Yahweh, fulfill your
- 19:23purpose in me. And so knowing God has a plan
- 19:27for my life, I want to be a part of that plan and I'm thankful
- 19:31that God is the one that accomplishes it.
- 19:33I just have to be faithful to say, yes, Lord.
- 19:38One phrase I heard often growing up was obey every impulse of the
- 19:43Holy Spirit that when God says go, I go.
- 19:45When God says talk to him, I talk to him.
- 19:48When God says be generous, I'm generous.
- 19:50When God says wait, pray, be still that I follow everything
- 19:55that he has. Why?
- 19:57Because he's the good God. He's the one that I can listen
- 20:00to, that I can worship, that I can brag about to the spiritual
- 20:04beings. He's the one that kings would be
- 20:07intelligent to follow and to worship.
- 20:10And he's the one that takes note of the humblest, the the lowly,
- 20:14those that are nobodies. And may we live not for our own
- 20:20purposes, but for his purposes, listening to him each step along
- 20:24the way. Well, thanks for tuning in and I
- 20:27hope Psalm 138 was an encouragement to you next
- 20:30episode. Psalm 139, many people's
- 20:33favorite Psalm. It's right up there like Psalm
- 20:3623, Psalm 51, Psalm 139, like it's one of the best known ones.
- 20:44And I am super, super excited. Frankly, I may need to take a
- 20:48couple episodes to go through Psalm 139.
- 20:51It is so good and I'm really looking forward to it.
- 20:54Thanks for tuning in.
