Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Louise Upston: Tourism Minister on new campaign encouraging Australian tourists
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the governments announced a new campaign for encouraging Aussies
- 0:03Speaker 1: to come here for the next holiday. The campaign is
- 0:05Speaker 1: called Everyone Must Come. No, so I got that wrong.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Everyone must go. Everyone must Go because it's aimed at
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Aussies. Everyone must Go. It's costing US half a
- 0:14Speaker 1: million dollars. It will be followed by more campaigns targeting
- 0:17Speaker 1: other places. Tourism Minister Louise ups And announced the marketing
- 0:21Speaker 1: will go live across the Ditch next week. She announced
- 0:23Speaker 1: us yesterday. She's with me now, Hello.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Louise, good morning to you. How are you very good?
- 0:28Speaker 1: So how effective do you think this could be?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Well, this is the first of several tourism boost announcements
- 0:35Speaker 2: that we're planning over the coming weeks. And the important
- 0:38Speaker 2: part with this is it's very much supported by industry.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So what we will see is accommodation providers, airlines who
- 0:46Speaker 2: are supporting this push to get Aussie's to come over
- 0:51Speaker 2: and visit with their own deals. So it means that
- 0:54Speaker 2: every dollar of taxpayers ben goes that much further.
- 0:58Speaker 1: The question I had and I raised earlier this morning,
- 1:00Speaker 1: is why haven't we been doing this since the beginning
- 1:02Speaker 1: of time? I mean they're right there. It's cheap for
- 1:05Speaker 1: them to come here, it's easy for them to talk
- 1:08Speaker 1: and commute and to get around. They've got friends here.
- 1:10Speaker 1: This is something we should have been doing forever.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yes, So Tourism New Zealand are already doing campaigns into Australia.
- 1:17Speaker 2: They've got an autumn campaign that's underway at the moment.
- 1:20Speaker 2: This is on top of so we wanted a short,
- 1:22Speaker 2: sharp injection to make sure that Australians know that they
- 1:29Speaker 2: can come over straight away. We wanted some urgency in
- 1:32Speaker 2: it and a fresh campaign to really work with the
- 1:36Speaker 2: industry on. So this is in addition to what Tourism
- 1:39Speaker 2: New Zealand is already doing into Australia.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I see that in Australia we're already their number one destination.
- 1:46Speaker 1: There was a piece on the news actually last week
- 1:48Speaker 1: saying we're number one for Australians leaving and coming here.
- 1:52Speaker 1: So is there more upside that we can get?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yes? Absolutely so. If you look at our twenty nineteen numbers,
- 1:58Speaker 2: we're only sitting at eighty eight percent of that. This
- 2:02Speaker 2: short boost we're aiming to bring another five thousand visitors in,
- 2:07Speaker 2: which would take us up to ninety three percent, so
- 2:10Speaker 2: there's still lots of potential. You know, we're a long
- 2:12Speaker 2: way off where we were in twenty nineteen, so job
- 2:15Speaker 2: number one is getting those numbers back. And you're right,
- 2:18Speaker 2: Australians can make their decision quickly and hop over the pitch.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So this campaign is all about saying we're open for business.
- 2:25Speaker 2: We welcome you with open arms, so get on, make
- 2:28Speaker 2: the decision and come over very good.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Any any other sovereignties that you wanted to do a
- 2:34Speaker 1: campaign man this in any other places.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Well there we are other parts of the Tourism Boost campaign,
- 2:40Speaker 2: but if you look at other big markets, obviously China
- 2:43Speaker 2: numbers are down at sixty percent of where they were
- 2:46Speaker 2: in twenty nineteen, which is concerning, and there's emerging markets
- 2:51Speaker 2: like India, so we will be making sure that we
- 2:55Speaker 2: have campaigns into existing markets to get numbers back to
- 2:59Speaker 2: where they were nineteen, as well as some other parts
- 3:03Speaker 2: of our Tourism Boost campaign which will be coming out
- 3:05Speaker 2: in the next few weeks.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Okay, we wish you only success with that one and
- 3:09Speaker 1: putting your other hat on there. You were on the
- 3:11Speaker 1: Telly last night as well twice a recent one News
- 3:14Speaker 1: vary in poll found forty six percent of New Zealand
- 3:16Speaker 1: has thought the issue of homelessness was getting worse. And
- 3:20Speaker 1: you're the minister in charge of worrying about that sort
- 3:21Speaker 1: of thing, are they wrong?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Lock Homelessness has been a challenge for many, many years,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and so it is something that people worry about. What
- 3:30Speaker 2: I'm incredibly proud of Minister Pautucke and Minister Bishop and
- 3:34Speaker 2: I have had a real focus on emergency housing and
- 3:38Speaker 2: getting children out of living in motels. Nineteen hundred fewer
- 3:43Speaker 2: children living in motels than and we're a year ago.
- 3:46Speaker 2: So we have taken a real focus to this issue,
- 3:50Speaker 2: focusing first and foremost children, and the number of people
- 3:54Speaker 2: living in emergency housing now is significantly below where it was.
- 3:59Speaker 2: We've all seen five thousand fewer people on the Social
- 4:04Speaker 2: Housing Register. So while there's always more work to do,
- 4:08Speaker 2: we have made some incredible inroads into some of these
- 4:12Speaker 2: long standing housing challenges.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Louise Upsin, Minister for Social Development and Minister for Tourism.
