- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today is a chilly day at the
- 0:19time that I am recording, and I'm not saying chilly as in
- 0:23that's the kind of food that I'm eating.
- 0:25It's just chilly as in it's cold.
- 0:28It's nippy outside and certainly a December morning today we are
- 0:32in Psalm 119 and we are in this next portion, which is verses 49
- 0:38through 56, so Psalm one, 1949 through 56.
- 0:42And we're looking at all of these verses start with the
- 0:45Hebrew letter Zion. Zion.
- 0:49And in these verses, we're going to see one theme that kind of
- 0:54gets drawn out again and again through this portion.
- 0:58So Psalm 118, it's all about the Word of God, if you will, from
- 1:03A-Z all the way from the first Hebrew letter to the last.
- 1:06In each of these sections, all 176 verses deal with the Word of
- 1:10God. So let's see what the Word of
- 1:12God has for us today. Verse 49, Remember your word to
- 1:16your servant. You have given me hope through
- 1:18it. This is my comfort in my
- 1:21affliction. Your promise has given me life.
- 1:25The arrogant constantly ridicule me, but I do not turn away from
- 1:29Your instruction. Yahweh, I remember Your
- 1:32judgments from long ago and find comfort.
- 1:36Fury seizes me because of the wicked who reject Your
- 1:39instruction. Your statutes are the theme of
- 1:42my song during my earthly life. Yahweh, I remember Your name in
- 1:47the night and I obey your instruction.
- 1:50This is my practice. I obey your precepts.
- 1:56So there's a lot of things that we could pull from this
- 1:59particular portion of Scripture, but the one thing that I wanted
- 2:01to highlight is this truth. The Word of God is settled, and
- 2:07because it is settled, we can believe it and we can look back
- 2:13on it with hope for our future. So we can look back on the Word
- 2:16of God because it's settled and find hope for our future.
- 2:21One of the things even nowadays that I see so often with people
- 2:25is they put some faith or some hope into the stock market.
- 2:32And the stock market can go up or down any given day.
- 2:35You can ask people back in 2008, hey, how did that work out for
- 2:40you? You can look back in, you know,
- 2:421929, I think is when the Great Depression started.
- 2:46And you can look, even nowadays, a lot of financial individuals,
- 2:51they're looking at how the stock market's currently going and
- 2:54they're talking about an AI bubble and all of those things
- 2:58that we can go, OK, wait, where is the settledness?
- 3:01Is there anywhere firm that I can place my ground that I know
- 3:05for sure if I do this or say this or if I believe this, this
- 3:11is a safe place for me to rest in.
- 3:16And the truth is, so many things in this world are not that.
- 3:20If you put your faith in the stock market, it might pan out
- 3:23for you, it might not. And for some people it works out
- 3:27great, and for other people it reeks devastation in their life.
- 3:31Some people really hope that a particular job is going to
- 3:35sustain them for many, many years and they will be able to
- 3:38accomplish all of their both career and financial goals as a
- 3:42result of having that job. But there's no guarantee that
- 3:45they will retain that job for any length of time.
- 3:47But some people start a business and they're excited about the
- 3:51ability to have their own, you know, their own thing.
- 3:55And they're not relying on someone else to be the boss.
- 3:57They're not relying on someone else's mood to depend to
- 4:01determine whether or not they're going to have a job.
- 4:04And so they, they love that idea.
- 4:06But even being self-employed, you still have to get customers
- 4:10and your products all have to come in on time and it has to be
- 4:14at the price that works so that when people buy stuff, you're
- 4:18making money and you're not losing money and you're able to
- 4:21make enough money to be able to live as a result of your
- 4:25business. And so there are all of these
- 4:27things in life that can be, can be good, can be bad, but there's
- 4:31no guarantee that it will keep you safe.
- 4:34But what we see in this portion of Scripture is that we do have
- 4:37something that can keep us safe. There is something that we can
- 4:40rely on when all the rest of the world goes up and down.
- 4:44We can rely on the Word of God, that knowing who God is, what
- 4:49His intentions are, and what His will is for us, and knowing the
- 4:54purpose that we have while we are here and the fact that God
- 4:57has promised those basics within our life of that daily bread.
- 5:02Or we read one of the Psalms. It's somewhere in the Psalm 30
- 5:06is I think it's 37 or 39 perhaps I where David says I've never
- 5:11seen the righteous abandoned, nor have I seen his descendants
- 5:16begging for bread. And so we can go to these
- 5:21portions of Scripture to say, God, here's who you have
- 5:24proclaimed yourself to be. I remember Philippians 4 and
- 5:27verse 19 where it says, my God will supply all of your need
- 5:31according to his riches and glory by Christ Jesus.
- 5:35And so we take these promises from the word of God.
- 5:38We take Hebrews 13, I'll never leave you or abandon you, and we
- 5:43can say God, I believe this. So here's what I was talking
- 5:47about at the very beginning. We remember God's word because
- 5:50it's settled. God's word is not still being
- 5:53written. It was completed with the last
- 5:56of the apostles to write and then pass off the scene which
- 6:00would have been the apostle John there in the Book of Revelation
- 6:05being the last written of the New Testament.
- 6:09And the word of God is settled. It's complete.
- 6:12And so we fully know who God is as far as He has made known to
- 6:17us. And so we can fully know God
- 6:20according to His revelation and we know what His instructions
- 6:24and will and temperament is towards us and for us.
- 6:29So because we know everything that God wanted us to know, we
- 6:33don't have to worry about some new letter, you know, from Paul
- 6:37coming out that we then go, oh man, OK, Actually, God doesn't
- 6:41anymore promise that he will provide for all of our need
- 6:44according to his riches and glory by Christ Jesus.
- 6:46Oh no, God says now he will take away the Holy Spirit and that
- 6:49the Holy Spirit's no longer the down payment of our inheritance
- 6:52until the redemption of the purchase possession.
- 6:54We don't have to worry about God's word changing.
- 6:57It is complete, it's total, and He has told us that He does not
- 7:01change. And so the promises that he made
- 7:033000 years ago or 2000 years ago he will still keep today.
- 7:08And so here's where I see this, particularly within this passage
- 7:12verse #49 He says, remember your word to your servant.
- 7:16He says, God, you know what you said?
- 7:18Would you act on that as a result of the fact that you told
- 7:22me that you were going to do this because you said this would
- 7:25happen, Would you be true to your word?
- 7:28I've mentioned off and on here before when Scripture talks
- 7:31about God remembering, it's not that he has forgotten it.
- 7:35It's calling for God to act based on what he has said.
- 7:40I love this. Even when I think about my work
- 7:43as a pastor. The area in which I'm
- 7:46ministering in Essex is an incredibly needy area.
- 7:51There are so many people that do not know the Lord.
- 7:55There are people in dire financial straits.
- 7:57There are people that maybe are doing OK financially, but they
- 8:02don't have family, they don't have connection.
- 8:05There are broken family relationships.
- 8:08And so I'm thankful for God's promise that he has people from
- 8:12every nation and tribe and tongue.
- 8:16And that because he has called us to go into all the world and
- 8:19make disciples of all nations. That there are people within
- 8:24this town and the areas around it that need to know the Lord,
- 8:28that need to become disciples of Jesus, that need to be baptized,
- 8:32need to be taught everything that Jesus commanded and that my
- 8:36work that I do here is not pointless.
- 8:39My my job here. I don't know how many of my
- 8:43Tabernacle family listen to these.
- 8:45My job is not necessarily to just say, OK, what would make,
- 8:50you know, what would make Shelly or what would make Myron or what
- 8:54would make Martha or what would make Caitlin the most happy at
- 8:58at the church. And I'll try and, you know, do a
- 9:01whole smorgasbord and whatever makes the most people happy,
- 9:05we're all going to do that. And if everyone is happy with
- 9:08me, then I'm doing my job, right?
- 9:10No, my job is not even to say what would make Brian most
- 9:14happy. No, my job is make disciples,
- 9:17baptize them, teach them everything that Jesus has
- 9:20commended. Command.
- 9:20That is my instruction as a pastor.
- 9:23That's my job description. Frankly, it's our job
- 9:25description as Christians, period.
- 9:28And as a pastor in particular, I'm praying for it, and I'm
- 9:31looking after the souls of other people.
- 9:34And so if I'm going to accomplish the work that God has
- 9:38called me to, then I'm relying on God's promises.
- 9:41I'm relying on God's word to say God.
- 9:43If all I'm here for is to make Christians happy, it's not
- 9:51really a great purpose in life, But God, if I am here to
- 9:54evangelize the lost and to equip the Saints so that they can
- 9:59evangelize the lost and so that they can walk with God in a
- 10:03deep, meaningful way, well, that's a life worth living.
- 10:06And I can live it based on the promises of God.
- 10:09I can say, God, you said whoever calls on the name of the Lord
- 10:12will be saved. And God, you said that everyone
- 10:14that the Father has given to you will come to you, and those that
- 10:17come to you, you will never for any reason cast them out.
- 10:21God, you said that you have people all across this world,
- 10:25from every nation and from every tribe and every language.
- 10:29And so God, I believe your word, would you accomplish your will?
- 10:36And so that's my purpose is God, I hear what you've said and so
- 10:39I'm going to follow it. Verse #49 continues.
- 10:43He says you have given me hope through it, through your word.
- 10:47This is God, you have said this. And so I can go back to there
- 10:51and say, God, this is what you have promised.
- 10:55This is what your declaration is.
- 10:56And so I believe it when I'm concerned about my walk with the
- 11:00Lord or even if I truly am saved because I'm struggling with sin
- 11:04and, and I just feel like I'm constantly failing God over and
- 11:08over again. And I don't know if I'm truly
- 11:10saved. I can go back to Romans chapter
- 11:138 and verse #1 where it says there is therefore now no
- 11:16condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 11:19And I can say because I have placed my faith in Christ, that
- 11:24is the basis of my standing before God.
- 11:27Am I called to holiness? Am I called to follow the Lord
- 11:30and my actions and my words and my thoughts?
- 11:31Certainly. But that is not the basis of my
- 11:34relationship with God. The basis of my relationship
- 11:36with God is the fact that Jesus died for me.
- 11:40And if I'm going to get to heaven, if I'm going to have a
- 11:42relationship with God today, it can only come through the Lord
- 11:46Jesus Christ. And so all of my faith is placed
- 11:49in him. And so I asked God, like God,
- 11:51would you be the one that is standing by me when my own soul
- 11:55is condemning me for my sins? Would you help me to remember
- 11:59that it's about what Jesus has done, not about my perfection?
- 12:03Certainly I need to follow you, but help me to gain assurance
- 12:07through knowing it's about Christ.
- 12:09It's not about me so many other ways that that we could think
- 12:15about this all continue on in verse 50 the end of it.
- 12:19This is my comfort in my affliction.
- 12:21You want to have some comfort for the hurts in your life.
- 12:24Says your promise has given me life, this promise that was
- 12:28given in the past. He says, this provides me with
- 12:31the life, the exuberance, the joy, the energy to be able to
- 12:35move forward. You need comfort in your
- 12:38affliction. The book of James in chapter 5
- 12:41would tell us, sing psalms to the Lord.
- 12:43Why the Psalms? Because over and over again it's
- 12:47these kinds of statements to say, God, I am hurting.
- 12:50There are enemies, there are those that ridicule me, there
- 12:53are those that are hurting me. My own soul is like down in the
- 12:57dust. But God, I believe that you will
- 12:59lift me up. I believe that your word will
- 13:01give me strength, and so may we rely on the promises of God.
- 13:06How do we know the promises of God?
- 13:08We spend time in the Word. It's the most important thing
- 13:12that we can do. Verse 51 The arrogant constantly
- 13:15ridicule me, but I do not turn away from your instruction.
- 13:22Ridicule is very, very, very rarely a tool that a Christian
- 13:28should ever use. And frankly, in today's very
- 13:31polarized age, it's something that's very common, very
- 13:36unfortunately, I can see in many politicians today that this has
- 13:40become commonplace. I remember even seeing back
- 13:44about nine years ago now, there was the Republican primaries and
- 13:49seeing one particular person whose name you all know that was
- 13:54constantly insulting the beauty of other people's wives.
- 14:00Seeing people be demeaned and ridiculed was terrible.
- 14:06And even today the same kinds of things happened and people made
- 14:10in the image of God are called are told to be quiet piggy in a
- 14:15way that is reprehensible to the Spirit of God.
- 14:19Now in the same it's not just unfortunately, it's not just one
- 14:23side of the aisle that has been partaking in this now as frankly
- 14:30social media discourse has begun to affect how people talk to one
- 14:35another. You can see the same types of
- 14:38things begin to bleed over into so many different politicians
- 14:42and to where you can have people that begin ridiculing others
- 14:46based on unchangeable physical characteristics of others and
- 14:53judgment and belittlement of others based on how you know
- 14:57naturally beautiful or not beautiful that person might be
- 15:02or whether or not they are strong enough or frankly
- 15:05sometimes even people that have you know abnormal tonal
- 15:10inflections in their voice that someone could make fun of
- 15:14another person because their voice is a particular tambour or
- 15:18tone or pitch. None of those things are like
- 15:22what God does. In fact, here in verse 51, it
- 15:25says the arrogant constantly ridicule me.
- 15:29And when we demean others because of their looks, when we
- 15:31demean others because we disagree with them in politics
- 15:36or when we insult others as a result of unchangeable physical
- 15:42characteristics or when we insult their physical
- 15:44characteristics, even if they are changeable, that is not like
- 15:48what God does here. It's what the prideful do.
- 15:50It's the arrogant that walk in this way.
- 15:53Let's not be like that. Let's not be ridiculers.
- 15:56May other people not be able to say, Oh yeah, Brian ridiculed me
- 16:02at lunch or yeah, he was just really making fun of me.
- 16:06Now there can be good hearted jesting and and teasing between
- 16:09people, but there's also people very seldom will be like, yeah,
- 16:17that genuinely like hurt and kind of stabbed me when you said
- 16:20that or when you did that. And so may we be ones that were
- 16:23defined by our encouragement. We're defined by how we point
- 16:28people towards the Lord, not through how we ridicule.
- 16:31Now, are there times in which ridiculing could possibly be a
- 16:37correct choice? Possibly.
- 16:40Jesus called the Pharisees of his day whitewashed sepulchers.
- 16:45You can look at the prophet Elijah as he's teasing the
- 16:49prophets of Baal as they're trying to get Baal to bring down
- 16:53fire from heaven. And he's like, ah, maybe he's
- 16:55sleeping, maybe he's on a trip, maybe he's on the toilet and
- 17:00they just there, it's, it's ridicule.
- 17:05There is a time and place where it could be appropriate, but
- 17:08allow the Holy Spirit of God to tell you when it's OK to do
- 17:12that. Don't just assume it's always OK
- 17:15to do that unless the Spirit tells you otherwise.
- 17:17Here. Let's not be like the arrogant.
- 17:19Let us be those that do not turn away from the instruction of the
- 17:24Lord. Verse 52, he says Yahweh, I
- 17:26remember your judgments from long ago and find comfort.
- 17:31The word that encouraged in yesteryear is the same
- 17:35encouragement that we can find today.
- 17:37The encouragement that we heard as kids growing up in church, If
- 17:40that if that describes you, that's the same comfort you can
- 17:43find today. This is why I love singing old
- 17:46hymns during Christmas time, Christmas carols that I grew up
- 17:50with joy to the world, silent night, hark the herald, angels
- 17:53sing during regular times of year.
- 17:55When I survey the wondrous cross, it is well with my soul.
- 17:58Mighty fortress is our God. These songs remind me of the
- 18:04judgments of God that I heard long ago and it brings me
- 18:07comfort even today. Verse #53 here I wanted to
- 18:13highlight and I'll look at this verse and then 55 and then we'll
- 18:16be done for the day. Verse 53 Fury seizes me because
- 18:19of the wicked who reject your instruction.
- 18:23I think way too often myself and and I'm sure many of you are
- 18:27natural reaction to those that reject the instruction of the
- 18:30Lord is fear or appeasement that we don't want to rock the boat
- 18:36by saying no, you you should actually care about what God
- 18:39says or we want to like build a bridge and say, well, God loves
- 18:44you. And so I guess yeah, there must
- 18:46be a ton of other ways to God and and it doesn't just have to
- 18:50be faith in Christ alone. Whatever way you think works
- 18:54well as as long as you just love people, that'll be fine.
- 18:56No, here there is a righteous anger, fury because of the
- 19:01wicked who reject the instruction of God.
- 19:05May we be those that have genuine feeling when God, his
- 19:09character, his nature and his ways are being rejected by
- 19:13people, especially by those that would profess to be Christians
- 19:16for those that are in the world. As I mentioned, I think was an
- 19:20episode or two ago, Paul says that the the eyes of their eyes
- 19:24have been darkened. They've they have blinders on
- 19:26that Satan has placed there so that they would not see the
- 19:30truth. So they they don't understand
- 19:32yet they need the Holy Spirit of God to change their hearts.
- 19:36Now for those that profess to be Christians and yet want to
- 19:39continue in sin or in false doctrine, those ought to be
- 19:44people that we say no, this is not OK.
- 19:47This is not something that I just have to be tolerant of in
- 19:51the sense that I say well you know your truth, my truth, it's
- 19:54whatever. No, we should have some deep
- 19:57passion about what is right, especially as brothers and
- 20:01sisters in the Lord that we would point in the right
- 20:03direction. Why would we be passionate about
- 20:05it because the wages of sin is death that evil and wrong and
- 20:11false doctrine. It leads to the destruction of
- 20:15human souls and relationships and walks with God and so we.
- 20:19We should never be OK with that. We should always want to point
- 20:23people towards the truth that more could be said, but I'll
- 20:28I'll leave that there for today. Then verse 55, Yahweh, I
- 20:31remember your name in the night, and I obey your instruction,
- 20:35God, at night time when I get scared, when it's dark, when
- 20:39there's not, I can't just be busy.
- 20:43There's nothing really I can do but just lay there.
- 20:45God, I remember your name, your authority, and I want to obey
- 20:50your word. And then I love verse 56.
- 20:53This is my practice. I obey your precepts.
- 20:56I'm not always going to be perfect about it, but is this
- 20:58what I habitually do? Do I say God, I'm going to obey
- 21:02you, I'm going to follow you, I'm going to love you Today,
- 21:05God's Word, it is settled, it is complete.
- 21:08We know exactly what God wants us to know and we can take that
- 21:11to the bank. So rely on, take comfort in the
- 21:14Word of God. Let it motivate you towards
- 21:17movement, towards feeling and passion.
- 21:21May it cause you to stand firm even in the face of opposition.
- 21:25And may you regularly follow the Lord because he is a
- 21:29trustworthy, consistent God that we can believe in and fall.
- 21:35Thanks for tuning in today. Tomorrow we'll be in verses 57
- 21:38through 64. Thank you.
- 21:41Have a wonderful day.
