- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 23rd of
- 0:16April. And it's so good that you have
- 0:19dialled in. Well, probably not dialled in.
- 0:21You'll probably just press play. And you and I are going to
- 0:24continue reading the story, this brutal and often horrific story,
- 0:29as we read in this book of Joshua, about whole populations
- 0:33being slaughtered by the Israelites as they move through.
- 0:36Now, this is a good time to remember that this is not a
- 0:41historical document. This has not been written from
- 0:44an archaeological perspective to help us understand exactly what
- 0:48happened blow by blow to these nations.
- 0:50Nope. This is a theological story.
- 0:53And the point of this book being written down is that God keeps
- 0:59his promises and that when God promised to give this land to
- 1:03his people, that is what God did.
- 1:06And so when this story talks about victory, it doesn't talk
- 1:09about the battles. It talks about God gave them
- 1:13this victory. And when it talks about God
- 1:16giving them the victory, it makes that very clear that it
- 1:19was a comprehensive and total victory.
- 1:21So that's the language that they use of utter destruction, not
- 1:26because necessarily that is the historical fact of what went
- 1:29down, but this story is here to remind God's people that God is
- 1:34faithful and follows through on his promises.
- 1:37So as you read it, read it as a theological document that talks
- 1:42about God, the faithful God of the Israelites, not God the
- 1:46historically brutal warlord. Very different way of recording
- 1:51these events. So with that lens, let's
- 1:54continue as they have defeated the South and now they have
- 1:58moved to the north. And notice the language that
- 2:00doesn't speak about the battles, but it speaks about God's
- 2:04victory. As we read together Joshua
- 2:07Chapter 11, when King Jabin of Hazor heard
- 2:20what had happened, he sent messages to the following kings.
- 2:24King Jobab of Maiden, the king of Shimron, the king of Akshath,
- 2:30all the kings of the northern Hill Country, the kings of the
- 2:33Jordan Valley South of Galilee, the kings of the Galilean
- 2:36foothills, the kings of Nafoth Dor on the West, the kings of
- 2:40Canaan both east and West, The kings of the Amorites, the
- 2:44Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites in the Hill Country,
- 2:47and the Hivites in the towns on the slopes of Mount Hermon in
- 2:51the land of Mizpah, all these kings came out to fight.
- 2:56Their combined armies formed a vast horde, and with all their
- 3:00horses and Chariots they covered the landscape like the sand on
- 3:04the seashore. The kings joined forces and
- 3:08established their camp around the water near Merom to fight
- 3:11against Israel. Then the Lord said to Joshua, do
- 3:15not be afraid of them. By this time tomorrow I will
- 3:18hand all of them over to Israel as dead men.
- 3:22Then you must cripple their horses and burn their Chariots.
- 3:26So Joshua and all his fighting men travelled to the water near
- 3:30Marram and attacked suddenly, and the Lord gave them victory
- 3:34over their enemies. The Israelites chased them as
- 3:38far as Great a Sidon and Misrepothe Maim, and eastwardly
- 3:43into the valley of Mizpah, until not one enemy warrior was left
- 3:47alive. Then Joshua crippled the horses
- 3:49and burned all the Chariots as the Lord had instructed.
- 3:53Joshua then turned back and captured Hazor and killed its
- 3:58king. Hazor had at one time been the
- 4:01capital city of all these kingdoms.
- 4:03The Israelites completely destroyed every living thing in
- 4:07the city, leaving no survivors. Not a single person was spared.
- 4:11And then Joshua burned the city. Joshua slaughtered all the other
- 4:15kings and their people, completely destroying them, just
- 4:18as Moses the servant of the Lord, had commanded.
- 4:22But the Israelites did not burn any of the towns built on mounds
- 4:26except Hazel, which Joshua burned.
- 4:29And the Israelites took all the plunder and livestock of the
- 4:32ravaged towns for themselves, but they killed all the people,
- 4:35leaving no survivors. As the Lord had commanded his
- 4:39servant Moses. So Moses commanded Joshua, and
- 4:43Joshua did as he was told. Carefully obeying all the
- 4:46commands that the Lord had given to Moses.
- 4:49Sir Joshua conquered the entire region, the Hill Country, the
- 4:54entire Negev, the whole area around the town of Goshen, the
- 4:58western foothills, the Jordan Valley, the mountains of Israel,
- 5:02and the Galilean foothills. The Israelite territory now
- 5:06extended all the way from Mount Halleck, which leads up to Sayer
- 5:11in the South, as far as Balgad at the foot of Mount Hermon in
- 5:16the valley of Lebanon. Joshua killed all the kings of
- 5:19those territories, waging war for a long time.
- 5:22To accomplish this, no one in this region made peace with the
- 5:27Israelites except the Hivites of Gibeon.
- 5:30All the others were defeated, for the Lord hardened their
- 5:33hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites, so they were
- 5:37completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded
- 5:41Moses. During this period, Joshua
- 5:45destroyed all the descendants of Anak who lived in the Hill
- 5:48Country of Hebron, Deba, Anab, and the entire Hill Country of
- 5:52Judah and Israel. He killed them all and
- 5:55completely destroyed their towns.
- 5:58None of the descendants of Anak were left in all the land of
- 6:01Israel, though some still remain in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.
- 6:06So Joshua took control of the entire land, just as the Lord
- 6:11had instructed Moses. He gave it to the people of
- 6:15Israel as their special possession, dividing the land
- 6:19among the tribes. So the land finally had rest
- 6:23from war. Ah, Lord, you are a faithful
- 6:36God, and what you say to us you will do, you will do, and in
- 6:43fact you have done it already. You have saved us.
- 6:47You have given us not just land, but you have given us membership
- 6:51into the royal family and an inheritance that cannot rust or
- 6:56spoil or be taken from us. This inheritance, this eternal
- 7:02life, this fellowship with you in your wonderful presence,
- 7:08because that is who we are. We are your children, and we are
- 7:13loved by you. Thank you that we can trust
- 7:18wholeheartedly that what you say you will do, and what you say
- 7:22you have done, you have indeed done for us.
- 7:27And so we rest in your promises, we rest in your provision, and
- 7:31we rest in the sure hope that we have as we rest in you.
- 7:37Fill us with that indescribable joy.
- 7:44Oh, we love you so much, Lord, and we're so grateful for how
- 7:47you provide for us. So we lift you up and we praise
- 7:50you every day of our life until we see you face to face.
- 7:56And we pray this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
