- 0:00Speaker 1: In case you don't understand what he said by the
- 0:02Speaker 1: context of this passage, and in case you don't understand
- 0:06Speaker 1: what he said by him pointing to the fifth commandment,
- 0:10Speaker 1: how about a plain black and white straightforward word? Verse four.
- 0:16Speaker 1: And fathers. And father. And father. Everybody's trying to figure
- 0:26Speaker 1: out how to make men excited about church again. Everybody's
- 0:29Speaker 1: figuring out how do we challenge our men? How do
- 0:31Speaker 1: we get our men involved? God's got an answer. Fathers,
- 0:36Speaker 1: do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them
- 0:37Speaker 1: up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Then
- 0:41Speaker 1: get clearer than that, folks. The context of this passage
- 0:45Speaker 1: says the home is central in the evangelism and discipleship
- 0:49Speaker 1: of the next generations. The fact that he points to
- 0:51Speaker 1: the fifth commandment. screams that the home is central in
- 0:57Speaker 1: the evangelism and discipleship of the next generation. And then
- 1:00Speaker 1: in case we didn't get those two hints, he says
- 1:03Speaker 1: it in black and white. Father, disciple your children. Fathers,
- 1:14Speaker 1: if we believe this, then why is it that we've
- 1:17Speaker 1: done everything in our power not to allow that to
- 1:22Speaker 1: happen We don't expect that from our men. And I
- 1:29Speaker 1: hear you. We go back to this whole thing. I
- 1:31Speaker 1: understand that, but they're just not equipped. They just don't know.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Here's what's interesting. If the people in your church are
- 1:36Speaker 1: not tithing, you don't start a ministry to tithe for them,
- 1:40Speaker 1: do you? No. You simply teach them and expect them
- 1:48Speaker 1: to do what the Bible says is their job. If
- 1:53Speaker 1: it works for tithing Why don't we think it'll work
- 1:57Speaker 1: for the discipleship of the next generation? So what do
- 2:01Speaker 1: we do with this? I'm not telling you all to
- 2:03Speaker 1: go fire your youth pastors to harm. It's not what
- 2:07Speaker 1: I'm saying here. But we have to completely revamp our philosophies.
- 2:11Speaker 1: In the last couple of minutes that I have left,
- 2:13Speaker 1: let me give you a few things that we must do.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Because currently, all of our evangelistic efforts amount to no
- 2:19Speaker 1: more than filling up a bucket with a hole in
- 2:21Speaker 1: the bottom. We are not growing I want you to
- 2:27Speaker 1: hear that today. And by the way, this is why
- 2:30Speaker 1: you out there, you're going, yeah, 16 million, we're not
- 2:31Speaker 1: going to do it. Of course not, we won't go
- 2:33Speaker 1: down to 4 million in just one generation. No, listen
- 2:35Speaker 1: to me. Our churches will continue to be filled. But
- 2:39Speaker 1: here's what we do know. Number one, we know because
- 2:42Speaker 1: of Tom Rainer's research that was published in the spring
- 2:44Speaker 1: edition of the Southern Baptist Theological Journal. According to their research,
- 2:50Speaker 1: if their estimations are correct, somewhere around half of all
- 2:55Speaker 1: Southern Baptist churches Members are unregenerate. By the way, according
- 3:04Speaker 1: to the Nehemiah Institute, the Barna Research Group, and the
- 3:07Speaker 1: National Study of Youth and Religion, less than 10% of
- 3:10Speaker 1: professing Christian teenagers operate from a biblical worldview. Less than
- 3:18Speaker 1: 5% are theologically born again. By that, I mean they
- 3:23Speaker 1: say they're born again and they trust Christ as Savior
- 3:26Speaker 1: and Lord of their lives But they're wrong on the
- 3:28Speaker 1: deity of Christ. They're wrong on substitutionary atonement. They're wrong
- 3:34Speaker 1: on just about every important theological issue related to salvation.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Only 5% of them theologically have the information that they
- 3:42Speaker 1: need to be saved. So our churches will continue to
- 3:45Speaker 1: look big. But the overwhelming majority of the people inside
- 3:51Speaker 1: will not be Christ followers. So what do we do?
- 3:57Speaker 1: Number one, I beseech you. If you don't have a
- 4:01Speaker 1: biblical view of children, get on your face before almighty
- 4:06Speaker 1: God and repent. And if you have been mocking children
- 4:10Speaker 1: from your pulpit, and if you like one pastor, one
- 4:15Speaker 1: pastor that I talked to recently said, brother, when you
- 4:18Speaker 1: said that, here's what I thought. The first thought that
- 4:21Speaker 1: came to my mind was last week, I talked to
- 4:24Speaker 1: my people and And I told them that we thought
- 4:26Speaker 1: my wife was pregnant. And when I said that, I
- 4:31Speaker 1: told them that after we found out that she wasn't,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I said, we had a close call. He said, I
- 4:39Speaker 1: need to go get on my face right now. Because
- 4:42Speaker 1: I communicated to my people that children are a curse
- 4:45Speaker 1: and a scourge and not a blessing. Do not make
- 4:51Speaker 1: a mockery of children. You encourage people To welcome children.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Into their homes. You throw a banquet. When that woman
- 5:02Speaker 1: walks into your church. With six or seven kids behind her.
- 5:07Speaker 1: You honor her. And let everybody see you do it.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Because if it wasn't for women like her. We have
- 5:15Speaker 1: no future. Secondly. If you have a youth ministry in
- 5:21Speaker 1: your church. And you have a mission statement. You line
- 5:26Speaker 1: it up against what we looked at tonight in scripture.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And if it's wrong on its biblical and theological merit,
- 5:34Speaker 1: you crumble it up, put it in the trash and
- 5:37Speaker 1: start over. Because it will not change until we change
- 5:43Speaker 1: our entire mentality. about what it means to disciple the
- 5:47Speaker 1: next generation. As long as you think it's your idea
- 5:51Speaker 1: or it's your responsibility, as long as you think that
- 5:54Speaker 1: our job in discipling the next generation means hiring some
- 5:57Speaker 1: guy who's 25 years old, got spiked hair, and has
- 6:01Speaker 1: never raised a teenager himself, Lord, help us. Our entire
- 6:07Speaker 1: mentality has to change. Thirdly, and this is the toughest
- 6:11Speaker 1: one to talk about, We have to adopt a biblical
- 6:16Speaker 1: view of church leadership. I want to tell you something.
- 6:20Speaker 1: There's two skills required of a pastor and only two skills.
- 6:26Speaker 1: There are a lot of character qualities that are required,
- 6:28Speaker 1: but only two skills. Number one, he must be able
- 6:33Speaker 1: to teach. Number two, he must manage his household well.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Our churches are filled with biblically disqualified pastors. Titus chapter
- 6:47Speaker 1: 1 makes it clear. If you do not have faithful children,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and if your children are accused of rebellion or dissipation,
- 6:55Speaker 1: you are disqualified biblically. And you hear that, and I
- 6:58Speaker 1: know we hear that, and we go, oh brother, that's harsh.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Nobody's perfect. Listen to me. The same passage says, And
- 7:05Speaker 1: here's what boggles my mind. Same passage, same paragraph. Must
- 7:09Speaker 1: not be addicted to wine. That says he must not
- 7:13Speaker 1: be a drunkard. He must not drink in excess. We
- 7:17Speaker 1: say he can't drink at all. Listen to me. I'm
- 7:19Speaker 1: not a drinker. I'm not promoting drinking. I've never had
- 7:23Speaker 1: a drink. But this is what I want you to
- 7:25Speaker 1: hear tonight. Not drinking is easy for me. And it's
- 7:29Speaker 1: easy for most of you because most of you never drank.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And you stick your chest out and pop your collar
- 7:34Speaker 1: because you don't drink. It means nothing to you unless
- 7:37Speaker 1: you've been an alcoholic. It is not hard for you
- 7:40Speaker 1: to do. Discipling your family is a different story. And
- 7:44Speaker 1: it amazes me that in the same paragraph, we take
- 7:46Speaker 1: one of those requirements and raise it and the other
- 7:49Speaker 1: one and lower it. You want to know why our
- 7:52Speaker 1: families are in turmoil? Because most of you, when you
- 7:55Speaker 1: got hired at the church that you're at right now,
- 7:58Speaker 1: they never even met your family. They heard you preach
- 8:01Speaker 1: and voted on you. When the Bible says, if you're
- 8:04Speaker 1: not discipling your children in an exemplary fashion, you're not
- 8:08Speaker 1: worthy of being called a pastor. From the top down,
- 8:12Speaker 1: we are wrong on the family. And we are losing
- 8:17Speaker 1: the culture war one family at a time. And we
- 8:23Speaker 1: have gotten so pathetic that now there's a euphemism in
- 8:26Speaker 1: our culture called the pink egg. Why do we use
- 8:31Speaker 1: that term as a euphemism? Because pastor's kids who live
- 8:36Speaker 1: like they were raised by the devil has almost become
- 8:39Speaker 1: the norm. If the church is a corporation, that's completely acceptable,
- 8:45Speaker 1: because all you have to do is stand at the
- 8:47Speaker 1: top of a machine and make sure that people go
- 8:50Speaker 1: in one side of it and out the other, and
- 8:52Speaker 1: that there's more of them going through the machine next
- 8:54Speaker 1: year than this year. But if the church is a
- 8:56Speaker 1: family of families, and if God is serious about families
- 8:59Speaker 1: being expected and equipped to disciple their children, then the
- 9:03Speaker 1: people who stand at the helm had better be exemplary
- 9:06Speaker 1: husbands and exemplary fathers. And until we believe that, we'll
- 9:15Speaker 1: continue to lose the culture war, one family at a time.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Listen to this from Richard Baxter and the Reformed pastor.
- 9:22Speaker 1: If you are ungodly and teach not your families the
- 9:25Speaker 1: fear of God, nor contradict the sins of the company
- 9:28Speaker 1: you are in, nor turn the stream of their vain talking,
- 9:31Speaker 1: nor deal with them plainly about their salvation, they will
- 9:34Speaker 1: take it as if you preached to them that such
- 9:37Speaker 1: things are needless. and that they may boldly do so
- 9:41Speaker 1: as well as you. Mist in the pulpit, fog in
- 9:47Speaker 1: the pew. We will never be able to tell our
- 9:50Speaker 1: children to raise and disciple a house full of warriors
- 9:56Speaker 1: for Christ if we don't begin. to do it from
- 10:02Speaker 1: the top.
