Latest / Domer & Sons / Ep. 5 - Purdue Recap / UNC Preview (with Special Guest, Bebe!)
Transcript
- 0:04Welcome to Domer and Sons, a family podcast on Notre Dame football.
- 0:08We've got a very special edition today.
- 0:11It's not Domer and Sons, it's Domer and Sons Bebe BB.
- 0:17We've got the right reverend, Rick Barger.
- 0:21What's his name, Cal?
- 0:23Rick Barger.
- 0:26We got a special, special guest today.
- 0:29My father-in-law, but more importantly, the grandfather of the two sons, William and Cal, is joining us to, recap the Purdue game, and also talk about his least favorite school- in the entire world.
- 0:46There was only one person we could have on this podcast to do a University of North Carolina preview.
- 0:54And I promise to be nice.
- 0:56He's gonna keep it PG, I think.
- 0:59It's PG-13.
- 1:02Everybody here is above the age of 13, so I think we're good with that.
- 1:05Yeah.
- 1:05Your mom, won't chastise all of us.
- 1:08We are recording today on Sunday, September 27th.
- 1:12It's the day after the Purdue game.
- 1:15Final score in that game from West Lafayette, Notre Dame 49, Purdue 10.
- 1:23A late touchdown literally with six seconds left, put an extra seven on the board- yeah for the Boilermakers.
- 1:30Before we get into our Purdue recap, we're gonna go a little bit of around the college football landscape and what happened yesterday.
- 1:41William, what's out there?
- 1:43All right, so I think the biggest thing for Notre Dame fans is the Wisconsin-Penn State game.
- 1:48Wisconsin took down Penn State 24 to 20.
- 1:51Penn State was ranked 13th in the country at home.
- 1:55Wisconsin marched down at the end of the game, scored that touchdown.
- 2:00Looks, it looks great for us.
- 2:01I don't know if Penn State's just bad or Wisconsin played good.
- 2:07We don't know how good either of those teams are yet, but I think that'll, if Penn State remains ranked throughout the season, that'll be great for Notre Dame.
- 2:17And if Wisconsin can keep on winning.
- 2:18Yeah.
- 2:19Yeah.
- 2:20And then Florida beat the brakes off of Ole Miss, which I think is probably concerning for the Fighting Irish.
- 2:29Florida's run game looks unstoppable.
- 2:32Jayden Ball, Florida's running back, looks immaculate.
- 2:37He looks like a Heisman favorite right now.
- 2:39It's pretty scary stuff.
- 2:42So why do you say that looks bad for the Fighting Irish?
- 2:44Because, the running game, all they do is run the rock, and our running defense is the weakest spot so far.
- 2:51Do you play them this year?
- 2:52I don't think so.
- 2:52No, we don't play them.
- 2:53Okay.
- 2:54Why are you worried about them?
- 2:54I don't, I don't agree with that at all.
- 2:56Yeah, I wouldn't...
- 2:56Yeah, I- What's, then what's our weakest part of the- Running the football of r- part of the defense?
- 3:01What's the weakest part of the defense?
- 3:02I, I don't know.
- 3:03We are the number one defense of the country as of this morning.
- 3:06We are the number one defense in the country as of this morning.
- 3:10All right.
- 3:12Yeah.
- 3:12And then, some other things to note, LSU's legit.
- 3:15Doesn't matter if they lost to Ole Miss and Ole Miss just got whooped.
- 3:19They're legit.
- 3:20They beat the brakes off of- Bayou and, um, and SMU con- continues to be ranked.
- 3:28It looked a little sketchy there towards halftime only having a four, point differential.
- 3:34Iowa beat Michigan on a Hail Mary, a little taste of their own medicine.
- 3:38That was awesome.
- 3:39And, Mississippi State, they look pretty dang good.
- 3:43Kamario Taylor.
- 3:45Kamario Taylor is in the Heisman race now.
- 3:47He looks really good.
- 3:48Nick Saban's high on him.
- 3:50That's something to look out for.
- 3:52The SEC looks good right now.
- 3:55Mm-hmm.
- 3:56The way that you- You guys can't see William sitting there snickering at me'cause he knows how much I love the SEC.
- 4:02Well, I, I'm just gonna say my one thing that, living here in Atlanta and it being a late night game, I was stunned when I got up this morning, saw that Georgia Tech lost to Stanford.
- 4:12Stunned is right.
- 4:12Oh, wow.
- 4:13That happened?
- 4:14Yeah.
- 4:15Stunned, stunned.
- 4:15I mean, Wow, they're having a rough start to their season.
- 4:18Yeah.
- 4:19Pretty much so.
- 4:20And speaking of Florida, Florida got Tech's quarterback and Tech's offensive coordinator.
- 4:26Yeah.
- 4:26So they're probably still stinging a little bit and trying to figure out who they are having lost two critical components of that on the offensive side of the ball.
- 4:35William, I think you forgot to mention our friends in Los Angeles.
- 4:39Oh, yeah.
- 4:41USC lost.
- 4:42The linebacker took Dante Moore's head off and then snickered and celebrated about it in typical USC fashion.
- 4:50But Oregon came out triumphant.
- 4:53Dylan Raiola, the transfer from Nebraska, Mahomes wannabe.
- 4:57Looks a little Mahomey.
- 4:59Yeah, he looked, he looked good out there.
- 5:02Yeah.
- 5:02No, it's always good to see dirty Trojans go down.
- 5:06Yeah.
- 5:06So happy about that and hopefully that's one of many.
- 5:09Uh- Yep Lincoln Riley just continues to be- And that was supposed to be a big one for Lincoln Riley uninspiring.
- 5:15If he'd won that game, then we would've been a little more- Correct.
- 5:18USC's like- He's got a lot of excuses, guys.
- 5:20You know?
- 5:21Like he's- Yeah.
- 5:22You know, he's, he's- It's because they're not- As, um, as Dan Lanning said, if you're on the West Coast and you wanna go to a good football school, go to Oregon.
- 5:28If you wanna go to a Chris Brown concert, go to USC.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:32Yeah.
- 5:32Fair enough.
- 5:33Fair enough.
- 5:33Yep.
- 5:34All right.
- 5:35Let's get on to the next segment, our Purdue recap, Calvin, let's walk through the offense.
- 5:44Tell me a little bit about what, what happened- yesterday offensively.
- 5:47I mean, total offensive yards for us was 444, with 7.7 yards per play, Our rushing attack looked a lot better.
- 5:59Was it against a not very good defense?
- 6:02Yes.
- 6:02Have we played some not very good defenses and not had some great rushing gains?
- 6:06Yes.
- 6:06So, that was a nice thing to see.
- 6:08Anais Williams did very well, a good, bounce back from last week.
- 6:12Yeah.
- 6:12Jonas Walton did well, and so did, Nolan James.
- 6:17We got over 20 yards- Yeah in a single carry for the first time all season.
- 6:21We did.
- 6:21We had, we had a 40- Two we had two.
- 6:23Two.
- 6:23Yeah, we had a 40-yard one as well.
- 6:25And who did that?
- 6:26Jonas Walton.
- 6:26Yeah.
- 6:27That guy looks like Jadarian Price.
- 6:29He does look like JD.
- 6:30He looks...
- 6:30He's a bit shorter.
- 6:32But yeah, it's fine.
- 6:33But, uh- It's fine But just, like, his build.
- 6:34He looks like Kyren.
- 6:35A little.
- 6:36Oh, yeah.
- 6:36That's- Not a bad one a good analogy.
- 6:39All right.
- 6:39Nicely done.
- 6:40The nice thing to look here is our red zone scoring, super-duper efficient.
- 6:46Every single time we were in the red zone, we scored.
- 6:49Our passing attack has looked great.
- 6:51There's the one, I think, deep ball to Faison that CJ Carr had that literally hit him directly in his chest, right in his sternum, and it's like you literally have to catch that ball.
- 7:02It's, it's pretty hard to drop.
- 7:03Can't throw a ball any better than that.
- 7:05Yeah.
- 7:06Micah Gilbert looked good for the second game in a row.
- 7:0983 yards only on two receptions, but still.
- 7:12He had, yards after the catch, wh- which we really haven't seen all season.
- 7:16He usually was just coming down with the possession.
- 7:18He looks like an athlete.
- 7:19Yeah.
- 7:20Yeah.
- 7:20He was, he was running after the catch- Yeah which we hadn't really seen.
- 7:23Yeah.
- 7:24And, something nice to know, or not so nice to know, but our third downs, we got, still gotta be more efficient on third down.
- 7:32We were three for eight.
- 7:34I mean, when you only have eight third downs, I guess that's a good sign.
- 7:38And then no scoring in the third quarter.
- 7:40CJ Carr threw his first interception of the year.
- 7:44But I think we'll be fine.
- 7:46It was a good play by the linebacker.
- 7:48It's a hard throw to make.
- 7:49Only a few quarterbacks can really make that throw.
- 7:53We scored in every single game except for, in every single quarter, excuse me, except for the third.
- 7:5949 total points.
- 8:02I guess 42 total, total points on the offense.
- 8:07Yeah.
- 8:07Look, you know, I think when you are up 35 to nothing going into halftime, trying to keep 18 to 22-year-old kids engaged in the second half, trying to get them to play as recklessly and carefree as possible in the second half when you're up that much is really, really challenging.
- 8:27I would not be surprised if thoughts crossed some of these kids' minds or,"Oh, you know, I don't wanna get hurt," or,"I don't wanna..." You know?
- 8:34So, and I think that throw that CJ made, he knows he's got a 35-point cushion.
- 8:39He's gonna try to layer it in a very, very hard spot, and he went for it.
- 8:45So I'm all fine for let, having them let it rip and, and go for it there.
- 8:49Of course.
- 8:50And then our tight ends, they got involved finally.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:54It took us a, a couple games for them to finally get involved, but I thought we involved them well.
- 9:00Cooper Flanagan had his first touchdown of the year.
- 9:02Hopefully we'll get a little more of those, a little more touchdowns from him and- It looked exactly like his brother's touchdown at the beginning of the season.
- 9:09They're not brothers.
- 9:11Cooper and James Flanagan aren't brothers?
- 9:14No.
- 9:14No.
- 9:14Are you serious?
- 9:15No.
- 9:17I thought that was like the whole deal No No That's, that's also the whole deal is that they're not good James Flanagan's dad is Richie Flanagan.
- 9:23He used to play- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah for Notre Dame.
- 9:25He was very important to that FSU win But the, the two touchdowns were basically identical Very, very similar.
- 9:31They're the same play almost The goal line RPO is kind of the Notre Dame special Yeah.
- 9:36It's, it's great.
- 9:37You can only do that too when you're showing some sort of run threat.
- 9:41Yeah.
- 9:42Cal, after yesterday, do you feel any better about the run game?
- 9:48Definitely, but I'm still a little iffy on it.
- 9:52You know, I think that Michigan State's defense was good.
- 9:55I think Purdue's isn't as good, and I think we just have to know.
- 10:00Like, we got North Carolina next.
- 10:01They got a g- they got a decent defensive line.
- 10:04We just gotta watch out for that.
- 10:06They have a really good defensive line.
- 10:07They have arguably a top five edge rusher.
- 10:10They have a g- good edge.
- 10:12Yeah.
- 10:12Good edge They're defensive tackles.
- 10:14Exactly Uh, that's good But lucky for us, we have a great protector on both sides of the edge rush.
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:19Yeah It'll be...
- 10:20That'll be an interesting matchup Two good protectors But we'll, we'll get to that Yeah, I don't know about that.
- 10:24I don't know.
- 10:25Gerby Lambert.
- 10:26Gerby Lambert's- What about W- what about Will Black?
- 10:28That guy was- Will Black held his own That guy's the Christian Gray offense.
- 10:32Whoa He's just inconsistent The slander He's just inconsistent Easy.
- 10:36He's got four games under his belt, man And?
- 10:40Just give him- And?
- 10:43cut him some slack He's, he's gonna be like Joe Alt soon Yeah, I think- No, he's not He is I- No, he's not I think you're referring to Xavier Lewis.
- 10:51We'll get into that with the North Carolina, preview.
- 10:54But we'll get into that in a bit.
- 10:55Yeah All right.
- 10:56So offensively, a- again, it's a team that's still working out who its identity is.
- 11:02We're getting better.
- 11:03We only have two more games until our first real, real test, and so they have to continue to get better.
- 11:09William, defense.
- 11:11I think the defense was incredibly refreshing to watch a Notre Dame defensive line perform as well as they did.
- 11:18Six total sacks, Bryce Young, this was his breakout game.
- 11:23Forced fumble, two sacks, four total tackles.
- 11:27He created Drayk Bowen's first career touchdown there right before half.
- 11:32It was, it was great to watch, and even in depth we were still getting pressure.
- 11:37Logan Thomas with the sack, it was, great to see.
- 11:41Yeah, it was really impressive to see everyone play well.
- 11:44We had so many pressures, and we held them to 40 yards rushing and zero rushing touchdowns, which is impressive because their running back actually was tied for third for amount of touchdowns.
- 11:57He had six touchdowns going into that game, which was third in the FBS And their quarterback was averaging around 330 yards, and we held them to 177.
- 12:08I think the touchdown- 111 yards, actually.
- 12:11Ryan Brown specifically had 111 yards.
- 12:14100...
- 12:15Yeah, yeah, sorry, 100...
- 12:17Yeah.
- 12:17It's just, yeah, because the backup came in.
- 12:19Yeah, the backup came in- Yeah who was a different style of quarterback.
- 12:22Yeah.
- 12:22You know, he could use his legs.
- 12:24Right.
- 12:24And, by that time, though, th- they were playing against our three and four deep.
- 12:28Mm-hmm.
- 12:29Yeah.
- 12:29Yeah.
- 12:30Um, what'd you think about Joey O'Brien's performance as your breakout player?
- 12:34I think he plays with a lot of fire.
- 12:35Reminds me of Kyle Hamilton.
- 12:38There was a couple times where a guy was, like, going out of bounds and he ran across the field just to tackle him.
- 12:43It's really impressive.
- 12:44He played with conviction.
- 12:45He looked like he wanted to, start.
- 12:48It was really impressive.
- 12:50No, I thought it was great.
- 12:52It just shows how much depth this team has.
- 12:55I was talking with my father earlier, and we decided that- Who's your daddy?
- 13:01We decided that Notre Dame second string, if they played all our games, we could probably be ranked by the end of the year.
- 13:08Yeah, I think, I think the second string, yeah, it's, it's remarkable.
- 13:11And we are.
- 13:12We're throwing six, seven, eight defensive lineman out there.
- 13:16I mean, Sean Sevillano had a great game.
- 13:20Fatty.
- 13:21Fat, fat, fat.
- 13:23Big boy.
- 13:24He's the biggest boy.
- 13:28Big, big boy.
- 13:28Big boy.
- 13:28Big, big boy.
- 13:28Dude, his mom might be listening.
- 13:29My fault.
- 13:32Yeah, no, the defense, defense was great.
- 13:34And like you said, William, I think Bryce Young having the game he had, that's the Bryce Young we've been waiting for for two years.
- 13:42Not saying that he has not been good up to this point, but we wanted him to make a major step.
- 13:47And, yesterday hopefully is the beginning or the continuation of, progress that we've seen through the first three games that manifested in a big, big game yesterday.
- 13:58Yeah, definitely.
- 13:59And you know, talking about Bryce Young, I think he's on four sacks for the year.
- 14:05That's an amazing pace.
- 14:06It's four games into the year, and if we get couple games where he has half a sack, couple games where he has a sack, and then even, not even a lot, but three games where he has two sacks, then we're looking at a great Bryce Young, and we're looking at a Bryce Young who could possibly be a first-round draft pick either his junior season, which is now, or his senior season, which is next year.
- 14:30Yeah, if he keeps on ascending, who knows?
- 14:32The, the last thing I really noticed about this defense is I love the way Drayk Bowen and KVA complement each other.
- 14:39Feels like Drayk Bone's like the gasoline and KVA is like the match.
- 14:43He's always hyped up.
- 14:44He's always making some big plays at the line, and then Drayk Bowen back there leveling people out, commanding, making audibles, commanding the defense.
- 14:54It's awesome to watch.
- 14:55It is.
- 14:55Yeah.
- 14:56It is.
- 14:56All right.
- 14:57Calvin, game balls.
- 14:59Let's start with offense.
- 15:00Offensively, I'm gonna go with, Anias Williams.
- 15:04We're gonna be a little different here.
- 15:06Interesting.
- 15:06Zag.
- 15:07Interesting.
- 15:07Yeah.
- 15:08he gave us our first 20-yard rush of the season.
- 15:10He looked great in the second quarter specifically.
- 15:14That's when he scored, I think.
- 15:17He assured me a little more, specifically him, about our run game, and you just see the, not necessarily, he doesn't have a lot of burst, but he can be elusive at times, which is nice.
- 15:27So he can run through your face or, you know, sometimes he'll go around you.
- 15:30Yeah.
- 15:31I not gonna argue with that.
- 15:32Uh, William, game ball.
- 15:35Offense Okay, my offensive game ball is C.J.
- 15:38Carr Yeah.
- 15:40Mm-hmm.
- 15:41Yeah.
- 15:41Yeah.
- 15:42Four total touchdowns Four total, three- Yeah through the air.
- 15:46The one interception, I actually wanted to talk about that for a bit.
- 15:49I don't blame him at all.
- 15:51I mean, I do blame him, but it's not that bad.
- 15:53It wasn't like a meatball or anything, you know?
- 15:55No, it's, it's- Okay, Faison was running a deep dig right across the middle and Greathouse is on the curl, or on the, yeah, on the curl.
- 16:05Yeah, curl.
- 16:06Yeah curl.
- 16:06And he saw the linebacker kinda shifting his momentum towards Greathouse on the curl, so he thought he could throw it over his head and that wasn't the case.
- 16:14It was a great play by the linebacker and I think- Eight times out of 10, nine times out of 10 that's not picked off.
- 16:21I think three times out of 10 that's a big pick up on third down.
- 16:25Yeah.
- 16:26Yeah, it's a hard throw to make and, C.J.
- 16:29is not, he is not...
- 16:30It's nice to see him that he's actually taking a chance to go over the middle- Mm-hmm'cause he normally, he likes the little, he likes some boundary throws but he doesn't take a lot of shots directly in the middle.
- 16:42But, yeah, no problems with that.
- 16:45Before his rushing touchdown, got put on his butt by a DB, talked a little, talked a little something to him, something- Yeah, that was- that he's been, everyone- That was actually, that was actually my wild card.
- 16:57Yeah.
- 16:57My wild card was C.J.
- 16:58Carr mouth.
- 16:59Yeah.
- 16:59Oh, nice.
- 16:59Nice.
- 17:00That, that's a good one.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:02What about yours?
- 17:03Yeah, so my offensive game ball, I'm gonna go with Micah Gilbert.
- 17:07You guys already mentioned this, but, having two games in a row where he steps up and is our lead receiver from a yards perspective, the total output, I th- it, it is only gonna be helpful to Faison, it's only gonna be helpful to our running backs if we can extend defenses and make sure that these safeties know, oh, well, we're gonna have to account for number 14.
- 17:34And that just, that opens up more and more opportunities for other players around him.
- 17:38So- Definitely.
- 17:39Yeah.
- 17:39Definitely.
- 17:40I think it also will help our tight ends a lot more if they have to, you know, have a safety and a corner just help out with that.
- 17:47So now you have a linebacker on one of our tight ends, and if you throw a good enough pass, Cooper Flanagan or James Flanagan's probably gonna come down with it.
- 17:55Yeah.
- 17:56Great point.
- 17:57William, defensive game ball.
- 17:58Defensive game ball, Bryce Young.
- 18:02Yeah, not much to say there.
- 18:04Yeah.
- 18:04Yeah.
- 18:04No.
- 18:05Fantastic.
- 18:06Yeah, I'm gonna agree with you.
- 18:07It was Bryce Young.
- 18:08Yeah, look, I, I...
- 18:09It's be foolish of me to go anybody besides Bryce Young.
- 18:13I will say, Bubacar Traore, even though his stat line wasn't nearly, Lot of pressure he, he was...
- 18:20Oh, man, the, the pressures he was generating was remarkable.
- 18:23If you watch back the game, he actually forced a fumble in the beginning and the QB caught- Yeah it out of the air.
- 18:28Yeah.
- 18:28Mm-hmm.
- 18:28Yeah.
- 18:29No, it was great.
- 18:30It, relentless.
- 18:31It's, guys, you know how last year I was saying when you're watching JDP and, and Jeremiah Love, enjoy this.
- 18:40This defensive line, enjoy this.
- 18:42Definitely.
- 18:42This is not something I've ever experienced in my- No you know, 50 y- or excuse me, 40 years of being a Notre Dame football fan.
- 18:50You haven't been a Notre Dame- Yeah football fan for 40 years.
- 18:53I have.
- 18:5335.
- 18:5535.
- 18:56All right.
- 18:56Okay, 35.
- 18:56All right.
- 18:57Let's focus up.
- 18:58Wild card.
- 18:58Yeah, wild card.
- 19:00I have two.
- 19:01My first one is the edge rushers.
- 19:04That's my first one.
- 19:05Rodney Dunham had a sack.
- 19:07I will say that sack was basically a freebie.
- 19:09If he, if he didn't sack the quarterback, that's a problem because he was unblocked.
- 19:13Mm-hmm.
- 19:13But still our edge rushers, the amount of depth, the execution that we had- Love it perfect.
- 19:18Then my next one, two weeks in a row, greatest player to put on the Notre Dame gold helmet, Matthew Geoffrey Jordan getting a touchdown.
- 19:26I, I've been meaning to ask you this.
- 19:28His last name isn't Jordan.
- 19:29Is his last name Jordan- No or is it Geoffrey?
- 19:30No.
- 19:30Why do you say Geoffrey Jordan?
- 19:31Because Michael Jordan- Michael Geoffrey Jordan.
- 19:35It's'cause he's the greatest player of all time.
- 19:36But he wears Larry Bird's number.
- 19:38So?
- 19:39All right.
- 19:40All right, William, wild card.
- 19:42My wild card was CJ Carson.
- 19:44Like, now that pancake and the rushing touchdown was great.
- 19:48And, my other wild card actually goes to the other team.
- 19:52I did not expect the Purdue fans to s- you know, sell out the place.
- 19:55Yeah.
- 19:56They were there, and they kinda left towards the end of the fourth, but they were present.
- 20:00Yeah.
- 20:00Yeah.
- 20:01They were present.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:02Yeah, it's more than we can say about, University of- USC Stupid Children.
- 20:05Yeah.
- 20:05Nope.
- 20:06Yeah.
- 20:06Did you see the I saw, um, an Instagram thing.
- 20:10The Oregon players kept stealing the USC towels at the end of the at the end of the game.
- 20:14At the end of the game.
- 20:15And they all take a picture in the locker room with the USC towels.
- 20:18That's what Notre Dame did- Well, I don't- last year condone that behavior, but, uh, they had every right to be very, very- Yeah upset after number eight's hit on- Should we do around- Dante Moore what's your wild card?
- 20:28Oh, w- my wild card, uh, I'm gonna go with Joey O'Brien just because first start and, you never know what a young man's gonna do when he goes out there on the field and the first time, regardless of who the opponent is.
- 20:41And as we already said, Purdue had three games in a row over 300 yards, passing for Brown, their quarterback.
- 20:49We knew that potentially Joey O'Brien could be tested.
- 20:54He really wasn't, mostly because the defensive line was so overwhelming.
- 20:59Immense pressure.
- 21:00That quarterback probably had three or two seconds almost every play.
- 21:03It was so much pressure.
- 21:05Yeah.
- 21:05And then that's with rushing four or five, and then when six came, it was like, yeah, it's a sack- Yeah or it's a incomplete pass or something.
- 21:14Yeah, he was assignment, he was assignment positive.
- 21:16The other wild card I'm gonna say is just the entire team, one penalty in the entire game.
- 21:21Mm-hmm.
- 21:22Yeah.
- 21:22Um, yeah, That will work What was that penalty?
- 21:24It was a pass interference on Mark Zachary.
- 21:28I was expecting- Not Ed I was expecting Christian Gray, but Mark Zachary makes sense.
- 21:33Dude.
- 21:33All right.
- 21:33Will you stop this- Um Gray slander?
- 21:36Yeah.
- 21:37All right.
- 21:37So that's, that is our, recap from the game.
- 21:42Let's just recap really quickly our Purdue game predictions.
- 21:46Steele Wool, 56-13 Irish.
- 21:50Cal had 66-7 Irish.
- 21:52That was close.
- 21:52William, 56-17 Irish.
- 21:52Steeler, 52-6, and I was 56-3.
- 22:01Winner, winner.
- 22:02So William, technically you win.
- 22:04I, I just don't know how to- Technically I don't know how to feel about this I guessed the spread perfectly.
- 22:08You guessed the spread perfectly.
- 22:0930- The spread doesn't matter I guess I'm upset because you, you gave Purdue too much credit offensively.
- 22:15Yeah.
- 22:15I gave them seven more points than they got.
- 22:18It's just one score.
- 22:18Well, and we both know that the- So did- seven points were scored- So did Steele.
- 22:21So did Steele I know.
- 22:24I guess I'm bitter because I was closer.
- 22:26I w- at, at one point I was closer I know.
- 22:27I think I was the best.
- 22:29No.
- 22:29No.
- 22:30Yeah.
- 22:30No.
- 22:30I guessed the difference perfectly.
- 22:31No, you were too heavy on offense.
- 22:33It doesn't matter.
- 22:34All right.
- 22:36Well, that game is in the books.
- 22:37Guys, we are a third of the way through the season, which is wild.
- 22:41So four games in, 4-0.
- 22:44First time in the history of Marcus Freeman's tenure as a head coach that he's 4-0 in September.
- 22:51So let's get on to our next the next segment, which is the University of North Carolina Tar Heels going into, Jordan-Hare Stadium.
- 23:03Is it Jordan-Hare?
- 23:04No.
- 23:04No.
- 23:04It's Kenan Stadium.
- 23:05Kenan Stadium.
- 23:06All right, Mr.
- 23:07Barger.
- 23:07Na- named after a slave owner in Wilmington, North Carolina.
- 23:12Here we go.
- 23:15Let's buckle up.
- 23:15I, I, this is, I've been waiting all season long for this, this, whatever, 5, 10, 15, 20, I don't care how long it is, this is gonna be the best.
- 23:25All right, tell us about those Tar Heels.
- 23:27Well, you know, last year, they, uh, ran off, Mack Brown.
- 23:32They thought they could run it back with him.
- 23:33Mack Brown 2.0 was not that successful for the amount of money.
- 23:38And so, a bunch of power brokers, put together and they hired the one and only Bill Belichick.
- 23:45And people in the beginning thought this was just, internet trolls that were saying this, and it turned out to be true, and there was a lot of division among people about the hire.
- 23:57He brought his, young girlfriend with him, and, there was just a lot of drama and a lot of just stuff around the program.
- 24:06But they thought Bill Belichick would be able to take this program and, and go with it.
- 24:10So, they showed up for the very first game.
- 24:13He, ended up, paying, uh,$3 million to get this guy by the name of Gio Lopez, who was gonna be the second coming of, Tom Brady as his quarterback.
- 24:22And, they went down the field, 7 and 0 against TCU.
- 24:27The stands are going crazy.
- 24:28The announcers,'cause ESPN is, you know, just a bunch of homers when it comes to Carolina.
- 24:35And, and then the rest of the game, was ugly.
- 24:38I don't think they did anything.
- 24:40And then the fans, by halftime the stands were pretty much empty.
- 24:44And they had a very, sad season that ended in a big thud in Raleigh, when, I never thought I would see Dave Doeren call off the dogs, uh, against Chapel Hill.
- 24:57But here we are, a Bill Belichick 2.0.
- 25:00A lot of people thought that he might not come back to this, and they said,"You gotta do something about the offense, you gotta do some things." So he has this, general manager by the name of, Lombardi.
- 25:09And then he goes out and gets Bobby Petrino.
- 25:14And so, you know, when you think about it, uh- Bobby Petrino, leader of men.
- 25:20Yeah, exactly.
- 25:21Leader of young people.
- 25:22So, I don't know.
- 25:23I heard people,"Just keep him away from the cheerleaders and the volleyball team." And, And a motorcycle uh, and, uh- just absolutely And then all this drama.
- 25:35They ended up having to They fired Lombardi, paid him a million and a half dollars to go.
- 25:40He was getting paid a million and a half dollars a year.
- 25:42I don't know what the payout is.
- 25:44And then Steve Belichick, who was the, defensive coordinator, who was supposed to be the head coach in waiting, he also was told,"Adios, bye-bye." And, they had all kinds of drama with trouble with the law, and cheating.
- 25:59And so who is surprised, you know, from the school that brought you the, the biggest, scandal in NCAA history, if anybody, you know, remembers, AfAm Gate.
- 26:10So here we are in B- Bill Belichick 2.0.
- 26:13So he got Lopez left And everybody was trashing Lopez, all the Carolina faithful.
- 26:19He was horrible.
- 26:20How could he do that?
- 26:21Well, yesterday, Gio Lopez, led Wake Forest to another win over Louisville on the road.
- 26:26That's, that's that Gio Lopez?
- 26:29That's, that's that Gio Lopez.
- 26:30So now Gio Lopez has taken Wake Forest under a second-year head coach, and Wake Forest has now won two back-to-back road games against nationally ranked opponent, opponents.
- 26:42It's the first time since anybody can remember.
- 26:46So he went out and he got six-year Billy Edwards- From Wisconsin, who has lived up to his billing as a below average quarterback.
- 26:57But, uh, Mr.
- 26:58Barger, it, Wisconsin was his last stop.
- 27:00I, in my notes I see Wake, Maryland, Wisconsin.
- 27:05He's on his, he's on his- He's a, he's a- fourth school he's a six-year player, so.
- 27:09He's a traveler.
- 27:10He's a traveler.
- 27:10You know what?
- 27:11You got Belichick might as well have six year- So, they opened up in Ireland against TCU at Dublin.
- 27:19They lost a lot from the previous year, and a lot of pressure is on them to, not get spanked like they did last year.
- 27:25And, and they won 15 to 10.
- 27:26It was an ugly, ugly game.
- 27:29Gotta give them credit, TCU only got 281 yards.
- 27:33They also had 11 penalties that were just deadly in that game.
- 27:37So then they come home, and they play East Tennessee State University.
- 27:41Yeah.
- 27:42Uh, and they beat them 35 to 3.
- 27:45But, East Tennessee got 16 first downs.
- 27:49Think about that.
- 27:49They were 8 out of 16 on, on third down.
- 27:52They only got 255 yards, so that was pretty good.
- 27:55So then they're 2-0, and Tar Heel fans are now, they're, they're getting kind of excited.
- 28:00So they go down to Clemson, and they are thinking this is a game they could win because Dabo got just smacked by LSU, embarrassed 51 to 10, and then Georgia Southern, Clemson beat them 22 to 7, just very underwhelming victory.
- 28:18And so people saw Carolina, we're gonna go 3-0, and Clemson playing at home was only a three-point favorite, and, Carolina was up 17 to 6 at the a half.
- 28:30And then the third quarter came out, and Clemson scored, two field goals.
- 28:34And, um, by the end of the third quarter, it was 17.
- 28:37They got 9.3 field goals, and it was now 17 to 15, still in charge of Carolina.
- 28:44And then, at eight minutes into the fourth quarter, there was this huge lightning delay, and they left the field And came back.
- 28:57UNC, got the ball on the four yard line, kicked a field goal, and was up 20 to 15.
- 29:04And then with five minutes to go, Clemson scores a touchdown, just ch-ch-ch, down the field.
- 29:12And they go for two, and they don't get it, so they're up 21 to 20.
- 29:17And then at the two-minute warning, Carolina is on its own 45.
- 29:22They got two minutes.
- 29:24They got all their timeouts.
- 29:26It's fourth and one on their own 45.
- 29:31And so somehow Bill Belichick thinks, you know, that this, Johnson kid, is the second coming of Tom Brady, and they call a play-action pass on four and one, and he throws in the double coverage just terrible.
- 29:49Mm-hmm.
- 29:49And so they lose the ball on downs, and though Clemson gets the ball back, and UNC keeps calling timeout.
- 29:56Well, when they gave up their last timeout, Tyler Brown, on the UNC 34 just ripped up the middle for a touchdown.
- 30:04And of course, the game over.
- 30:05And some people were prognosticating the defense was so bad that did Belichick give up the touchdown so he could get the ball back?
- 30:15Is this is what the, the guy did?
- 30:17So, they got, they got smacked.
- 30:20It was embarrassing.
- 30:21It looked like that might have given Clemson life'cause they actually did pretty good, yesterday.
- 30:26I do wanna be honest and say that, uh, the Holes, um, excuse me, the Tar Heels have some, have some good players.
- 30:34I'd like to have Jordan Shipp on my team, wide receiver.
- 30:37Okay.
- 30:376'2", 210 pounds.
- 30:40He's a, he's a player, always goes hard, money guy.
- 30:45And then their big guy is a guy by the name Jelani Trueman, who's 6'6", 245 pounds, a tight end.
- 30:52Mm.
- 30:52He is their leading receiver, and they do a lot with him.
- 30:57Uh, they've got a running back, Benjamin Hall, who's averaging 6.5 yards per carry, 5'11", 229, kind of a bowling ball.
- 31:05And then they got another sophomore who I really like, who's just a tough, tough, tough ball player, Damon juice, who's 5'11", 225.
- 31:14Hall's averaging 6.5 yards a carry, and June is averaging 4.6.
- 31:20On defense, you've guys have already said it.
- 31:22They're strong up front.
- 31:24They got a good edge rusher.
- 31:26So we, here, here we come to Saturday.
- 31:29Their offense is not anything to write home about in terms of national statistics.
- 31:33You think of a Bobby Petrino run offense.
- 31:35But, Saturday, the game is, noon in Chapel Hill, it was announced today.
- 31:41The weather's calling for 83 degrees and rain.
- 31:46And rain?
- 31:47Rain.
- 31:47Okay.
- 31:48So ESPN game, and, I expect the stands to be filled.
- 31:54I expect there to be a lot of green and gold and blue in the stands.
- 31:59And, Carolina's coming off of a bye week, so maybe that's why the line is only 22 and a half.
- 32:08That's a low line, 22 and a half.
- 32:10That is a low line.
- 32:11Yeah, yeah.
- 32:12And the under, over and under is 49 and a half, so if you extrapolate that out, somebody's thinking that, Notre Dame's gonna win this game 35 to 14.
- 32:20Yeah.
- 32:20That, that would be what the spread is, and that would be the over-under.
- 32:24But this is what I wanna say to that.
- 32:27That's BS.
- 32:30Two things, Notre Dame hits.
- 32:33I haven't seen a team yet that hits as hard as Notre Dame.
- 32:37And UNC, it's a cultural thing.
- 32:39It doesn't matter whether you change the coach, change anything, they are soft.
- 32:45They're always soft.
- 32:47Hit'em hard, and they'll fold like a cheap suit.
- 32:51I think Notre Dame rolls 49 to 3, if the rain doesn't pose a problem.
- 32:58And then, it'll be interesting to see what happens when in the fourth quarter you're playing in front of an aluminum bowl because everybody's left.
- 33:08The next game, uh, Carolina, the Heels will have to play at 4-and-0 Pitt.
- 33:14Then they'll have to play at 4-and-0 Duke, who's nationally ranked.
- 33:18They'll get Syracuse at home.
- 33:20That's a winnable game.
- 33:23And then they get number six Miami And then they get a reprieve at UConn, and then they end with Louisville, UVA, and NC State.
- 33:36And they haven't beaten NC State, since the American Revolution.
- 33:40Uh, w- w- uh, Uh, so how many wins?
- 33:49I think four is their ceiling.
- 33:51So the question that I think going into the game is not only, what's the score going to be, and then what's Carolina ceiling after, is when does Bill Belichick get fired?
- 34:05'Cause there's talk about that already.
- 34:09Will he make it to the end of the season?
- 34:10No, he won't.
- 34:12Well, they, whoever that board of tru- that rogue board of trustees guy, he's the one who needs to open up his pocketbook and- They're not gonna fire him,'cause that's how they sell the tickets.
- 34:22I, I don't think he's putting enough product on the field to sell tickets.
- 34:25No, he's not.
- 34:26And yeah, I totally agree with you in terms of, their schedule.
- 34:30They have to go play at Pitt after this, and Pitt's a physical team with a good defense, and- Pitt's always a physical team.
- 34:37Under Narduzzi- Yeah they are always a physical team.
- 34:39They're gonna be a physical...
- 34:40Yeah, they're gonna be a physical team no matter what.
- 34:42If Pitt's- And Syracuse has some speed.
- 34:45Yeah, and Syracuse has got a great quarterback.
- 34:47Yeah.
- 34:47That's also a winnable game for Syracuse.
- 34:49Steve Angeli, former Notre Dame guy, but he's- he's good.
- 34:53Um- Yeah, so Cal, tell...
- 34:56What- what's...
- 34:56So we got 49 to three from Bebe.
- 35:00What's your s- what's your score prediction?
- 35:01I think that they're gonna get one touchdown, maybe- six.
- 35:05No, no, no, no.
- 35:07They might get one at the end, like, uh, Purdue did again.
- 35:10Give Narduzzi a touchdown.
- 35:11Yeah, they give Narduzzi a touchdown.
- 35:12Yeah.
- 35:13I think it'll probably be, uh...
- 35:15I'm gonna go ahead, I'm gonna say 48 to, seven, is my prediction.
- 35:21But I wouldn't be surprised if they also get a field goal, so.
- 35:24Okay.
- 35:2448 to seven.
- 35:25All right.
- 35:26William?
- 35:2741-13.
- 35:2941 to 13.
- 35:31Yeah.
- 35:32Okay.
- 35:33I, I can see, I can see the rationale for all those predictions.
- 35:37I'm- I'm with Bebe on this.
- 35:38I don't- This quarterback is average, At best at best.
- 35:44Right now 56.5% completions playing against, you know, some, some decent P4 opponents.
- 35:52Nothing, nothing- Nothing great great.
- 35:54Like Clemson's decent But he's not as good as the Brown kid was for Purdue.
- 36:00And- we saw that, as you mentioned Cal, when you only have three seconds, two and a half seconds to get the ball off- He's gonna throw interceptions he's gonna throw some interceptions.
- 36:10He's gonna have like three interceptions And if it's a rainy game, that only suits us because we've got some of the best linebackers in the country, and if we stack the box, we got...
- 36:19If we got an eight-man box trying to play the run, then that's what we're gonna do.
- 36:23We- The tight end does concern me.
- 36:25Yeah, he's a big guy.
- 36:26Yeah.
- 36:27And the thing that if there is something to consider is that Carolina hasn't op- had an open date, so they've got the...
- 36:36They'll have two weeks since Clemson- Mm-hmm for Belichick and Petrino to look at film, look at the team, fix what's broken, whatever they can.
- 36:46And it's a noon kickoff, which, my, watching of Notre Dame football is they don't always have the engines running at noon.
- 36:55Mm-hmm.
- 36:55They're normally a prime time football team.
- 36:59Mm.
- 36:59And it's in Chapel Hill, and they have to travel, all of that.
- 37:03I could see if Carolina gets the ball first, after the coin flip, I could see some scripted plays where they, get down the field and at least maybe get a touchdown, even though I didn't predict that, or a field goal or something.
- 37:18But then things will tighten up.
- 37:20They will run out of, uh- They'll run out of gas they'll run out of ga- they'll run out of ammunition and creativity.
- 37:26Once the scripted plays are done, and, Yeah and Marcus Freeman gets his brain trust together and puts the defense in, then it, it'll be, it'll be over quickly.
- 37:37Yeah.
- 37:37When you talk- you just said they'll run out of energy.
- 37:39That every single pl- team that we've played, third, fourth quarter comes around, they're gassed.
- 37:46Purdue's the only team that's like kind of held with us.
- 37:50And that was also because the entire fourth quarter we had our- We didn't have our starters in certain, yeah, three and four deep were in.
- 37:54But still, like- Fair enough.
- 37:58Fair enough.
- 37:59Yeah.
- 37:59No, I, I, I'm with you, I'm with you guys on this.
- 38:01I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go 42 to nine.
- 38:04I'm gonna say three field goals from the holes, and just call it like that.
- 38:09Yeah, so- Carolina, noon kickoff.
- 38:14Here we go.
- 38:15Thanks, Bebe.
- 38:16That was really informative.
- 38:19I can't wait.
- 38:20Yeah.
- 38:20And I didn't, I, I, I don't think I knew that about Mr.
- 38:23Kenan.
- 38:24The fact that he's still got the name on the stadium is very Carolina-esque.
- 38:30Yeah.
- 38:31I love it.
- 38:31I love it.
- 38:33All right, our next segment, Starting 11.
- 38:36It's a game we've been playing these, last four weeks.
- 38:40Two of us agree on a player in the one or two deep on the current Notre Dame roster.
- 38:44One of us starts asking questions to try to figure out who this player is.
- 38:49They have 11 questions to get the player correct.
- 38:53It's a one, one and one right now.
- 38:55All right.
- 38:55Dad- I'm not gonna argue with you Calvin's winning because he has the least amount of guesses.
- 38:59No, me and Dad are tied.
- 39:01I'm winning because- Me and Dad are tied.
- 39:04I had, I had six, you had six over, no, the tiebreaker is the cumulative number of guesses.
- 39:09You have 17 guesses.
- 39:11I have six guesses.
- 39:12All right, let's go.
- 39:13All right.
- 39:14Yep.
- 39:14Is this player on the offensive side of the ball?
- 39:16Yes.
- 39:18Well- That's- Did you see- No, no Okay that's a normal question to ask That's true.
- 39:21That's, that's- That's a normal question to ask So has this player, has this position received the ball yet?
- 39:26Yes.
- 39:28They received the ball?
- 39:29Yes, they have Does this player Oh, let me think.
- 39:37Let me think I want that.
- 39:38What was like- So it's not a quarterback'Cause they haven't received the ball yet.
- 39:46Do quarterbacks receive the ball?
- 39:47I mean, technically they can.
- 39:49They c- I'm talking about like catch it.
- 39:51Has, as this season, has a quarterback had a reception?
- 39:54No.
- 39:56They recept the ball from the- They receive the ball from the center.
- 39:59Yeah.
- 39:59So it's a quarterback.
- 40:01No, I'm just saying.
- 40:02Like, how do you know it's a quarterback?
- 40:04Okay.
- 40:04Is, is, is this player a quarterback?
- 40:08Yes.
- 40:10Okay, so you're not gonna do CJ Carr.
- 40:11Is this player Blake Herbert?
- 40:13His, his name's not Blake Herbert, so that's another question.
- 40:20Now that's a, that counts.
- 40:21No, no, no.
- 40:22Yeah.
- 40:22Blake Hebert.
- 40:23It's Blake Hebert.
- 40:23No, it is.
- 40:24It is.
- 40:24You are correct.
