Latest / Right Now Hot Takes / Affordability Is the Midterm Fight — And Socialism Makes It Worse
Transcript
- 0:04Imagine this, you're 28, you work, you save,
- 0:09you do the right things, and the house your parents
- 0:12bought on one income is now three and a half
- 0:14times the median income for people your age.
- 0:19Starter homes that used to be reachable now demand
- 0:21an income that used to buy a real family home.
- 0:24Young adult home ownership has fallen to around
- 0:2730%. Nearly 9 out of 10 people under 40 say buying
- 0:32a home is harder than it was for their parents.
- 0:35That's not a vibe. That's the data. Welcome to
- 0:38Right Now Hot Takes. I'm Jim Rand. Today we're
- 0:42talking about the issue that is going to decide
- 0:44the midterms more than almost anything else,
- 0:47affordability, and why the rising socialist energy
- 0:50on the left is the exact opposite of a solution.
- 0:53National Review put it plainly this week, Republicans
- 0:57can win on affordability, voters are angry about
- 1:00prices, housing, energy, everyday costs. The
- 1:04job is not to dismiss that anger. The job is
- 1:07to direct it toward the policies that actually
- 1:09create abundance instead of the ones that lock
- 1:12scarcity in place. Look at the numbers. Between
- 1:152019 and 2024, median home values for young households
- 1:21rose about 30 % after inflation. Their incomes
- 1:24rose about 9%. The price -to -income ratio for
- 1:28people under 40 is back near the peak of the
- 1:31mid -2000s housing bubble. Starter home prices
- 1:34have climbed from the mid -200s to the mid -300s.
- 1:38The income you need to qualify has jumped dramatically.
- 1:41Regulations alone can add nearly a quarter of
- 1:44the cost of a new single -family home. Insurance,
- 1:48taxes, and energy bills keep stacking on top.
- 1:51So young people delay. They stay longer with
- 1:54parents. They put off starting families. They
- 1:56feel the American promise slipping. And what
- 1:59does the loudest part of the left offer? More
- 2:02government control. Medicare for all -style central
- 2:05planning. Wealth taxes. Heavier regulation. The
- 2:08same democratic socialist package we just watched
- 2:11win primaries in places like Michigan and compete
- 2:14hard in Wisconsin. They talk about fairness.
- 2:17They talk about the working class. But the track
- 2:20record is scarcity, higher costs, and fewer opportunities
- 2:24for the exact people they claim to champion.
- 2:27History is not subtle on this. When you restrict
- 2:29supply of housing, of energy, of opportunity,
- 2:34prices rise. When you make it harder and more
- 2:36expensive to build, Fewer homes get built. When
- 2:39you treat energy abundance as a moral failure,
- 2:42energy gets expensive. When you tell young people
- 2:45that the problem is the rich instead of bad incentives
- 2:48and too much government, you distract them from
- 2:51the actual levers that work. Free enterprise
- 2:54is not perfect. Markets can be messy, but markets
- 2:57respond to demand. They reward people who produce
- 3:00more of what people need. Limited government
- 3:03and clear rules let builders build, innovators
- 3:06innovate, and workers keep more of what they
- 3:08earn. That is how you expand the pie instead
- 3:11of fighting over a shrinking one. If you're in
- 3:14your 20s or early 30s, this is not abstract.
- 3:17This is whether you get to own something, whether
- 3:20you get to raise kids in a place you control,
- 3:22whether the path your parents walked is still
- 3:24open. The left's answer keeps being more of the
- 3:27same ideas that made the problem worse. More
- 3:30central control. More redistribution. More cultural
- 3:34lectures about why your desire for a normal life
- 3:36is somehow greedy or colonial. The better answer
- 3:40is straightforward. Unleash supply. Cut the regulations
- 3:43that add tens of thousands to every new home.
- 3:46Expand energy production so power and gas stop
- 3:49punishing working people. Keep taxes and barriers
- 3:52low so people can actually climb. Reward responsibility
- 3:56and grit instead of envy. Republicans have a
- 3:59real opening here. Voters are not asking for
- 4:01socialism. They are asking for a shot at a life
- 4:04that feels possible again. Channel the anger
- 4:07correctly and the contrast rights itself. One
- 4:10side sells scarcity dressed up as compassion.
- 4:13The other side can sell abundance and opportunity
- 4:16if it has the courage to do it clearly. That's
- 4:18the fight right now. Not vibes, not slogans,
- 4:22results. If young Americans keep getting locked
- 4:25out of the basics, the country gets poorer in
- 4:27every way that matters. The fix is not more government
- 4:30promises. The fix is the system that has always
- 4:33expanded opportunity when we let it work. If
