- Lucas: Bienvenue to episode 193 of Learn French with Fexingo. Last time we tackled school subjects, and today we're diving into numbers, specifically 71 to 80. Luna: Oh, I'm ready. I've been practicing the numbers up to 70, so 71 to 80 feels like the next step. Lucas: Perfect. And speaking of making progress, if Fexingo has been helping you move forward with French, we want to keep it ad-free. If you'd like to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Just a quick thought before we jump in. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to keep the show exactly as it is. Now, let's get to those numbers. Lucas: All right. So 71 in French is soixante et onze. Listen: soixante et onze. It means sixty and eleven, so 60 plus 11. Luna: Soixante et onze. That's a mouthful but I love how logical it is. Lucas: Exactly. Say it with me: soixante et onze. Luna: Soixante et onze. Lucas: Good. Now 72 is soixante-douze. Notice the hyphen and no 'et'. Soixante-douze. Luna: Soixante-douze. So 60 plus 12. Easy. Lucas: Right. Let's practice both together. Soixante et onze, soixante-douze. Luna: Soixante et onze, soixante-douze. Lucas: Great. Now let's jump to 79. That's soixante dix neuf. 60 plus 19. Luna: soixante dix neuf. That's a long one. Lucas: It is. Break it down: soixante dix neuf. soixante dix neuf. Luna: soixante dix neuf. Lucas: And finally 80, which is a big change: quatre-vingts. Literally four twenties, because 4 times 20 equals 80. Luna: Quatre-vingts. I remember that from before. So it's like 4 twenties. Lucas: Exactly. Quatre-vingts has an 's' at the end because it's plural, but when you add another number, like 81, the 's' drops. But for now, quatre-vingts. Luna: Quatre-vingts. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. Say the numbers from 71 to 80 in order: soixante et onze, soixante-douze, soixante-treize, soixante-quatorze, soixante-quinze, soixante-seize, soixante dix sept, soixante dix huit, soixante dix neuf, quatre-vingts. Luna: Whoa, that's a lot. Let me try slowly: soixante et onze, soixante-douze, soixante-treize, soixante-quatorze, soixante-quinze, soixante-seize, soixante dix sept, soixante dix huit, soixante dix neuf, quatre-vingts. Lucas: You did it. And you even got the ones I didn't teach explicitly. Soixante-treize is 73, soixante-quatorze is 74, and so on. The pattern holds. Luna: It does. So once you know soixante-dix plus the tens from 1 to 19, you've got 71 to 79. And 80 is just quatre-vingts. Lucas: Exactly. Let's use them in a mini scene. Imagine you're at a market and the price is 71 euros. How do you say that? Luna: Soixante et onze euros. Lucas: Perfect. And if something costs 80 euros? Luna: Quatre-vingts euros. Lucas: Nicely done. One more time: 72 euros? Luna: Soixante-douze euros. Lucas: Excellent. Now let's do a quick test. I'll say a number in English, you say it in French. 79. Luna: soixante dix neuf. Lucas: 71. Luna: Soixante et onze. Lucas: 80. Luna: Quatre-vingts. Lucas: You're a natural. Let's go back to our phrases one more time. Soixante et onze, soixante-douze, soixante dix neuf, quatre-vingts. Luna: Soixante et onze, soixante-douze, soixante dix neuf, quatre-vingts. Lucas: Awesome. That's all for today's numbers. Practice these and soon you'll be counting to 100 with confidence. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. And thanks to our listeners for joining. See you next time for more French fun.
