- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan in this episode number three sixties
- 0:21Speaker 1: six and today I'm joined by the one and only
- 0:25Speaker 1: Andre de Quisto to discuss the aggressive scouting and hunting
- 0:29Speaker 1: tactics that have made him, in many people's eyes, one
- 0:32Speaker 1: of the very best deer hunters in the country. All Right,
- 0:37Speaker 1: welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you
- 0:40Speaker 1: by Onyx. Today, we've got a heck of a show
- 0:43Speaker 1: for you. This This is one that I've wanted to
- 0:46Speaker 1: do for years and years but couldn't because our guest,
- 0:50Speaker 1: Andre de Quisto, from from what I can see from
- 0:52Speaker 1: the outside at least, was not interested in doing any
- 0:55Speaker 1: kind of media or interviews or anything like this for
- 0:58Speaker 1: quite a time. Now I think, gosh, I think it's
- 1:00Speaker 1: been almost a decade, but that's changed, and for the
- 1:04Speaker 1: first time ever, we've got the lone wolf, Andrea to
- 1:07Speaker 1: Quisto here on the Wired Hunt Podcast. Now, I'm sure
- 1:10Speaker 1: a lot of you guys have heard of Andre. You
- 1:13Speaker 1: know about him, You've you've seen some of his stuff. Um,
- 1:16Speaker 1: if you've listened to many of our podcasts over the years,
- 1:19Speaker 1: you definitely heard a lot of other folks mentioned him
- 1:21Speaker 1: as an influence. But if you're not familiar, here's the
- 1:24Speaker 1: really quick rundown. Andre founded Lone Wolf Tree Stands and
- 1:29Speaker 1: started the White Tail Addictions TV show back. I think
- 1:31Speaker 1: this was in the early two thousand period ish, and
- 1:35Speaker 1: during that time he made a name for himself with
- 1:37Speaker 1: his deer hunting success and tactics. On top of the
- 1:40Speaker 1: business kind of stuff. He he seemed to push the
- 1:43Speaker 1: limit more than almost anyone else back then, and he
- 1:46Speaker 1: was definitely one of the first well known hunters to
- 1:48Speaker 1: popularize this mobile aggressive style of deer hunting. You know,
- 1:52Speaker 1: if you've heard and I've talked about it, we've talked
- 1:54Speaker 1: about in the podcast, this thing called the bumping dump tactic,
- 1:58Speaker 1: for example, that's Andre's. He was also very aggressive with
- 2:02Speaker 1: his hunting goals, targeting and successfully killing very specific deer
- 2:07Speaker 1: and just the biggest of the big that was his thing. Um.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And again this is pretty early on and he was
- 2:12Speaker 1: doing this just consistently. At one point he even decided
- 2:16Speaker 1: to specifically go out find and kill the state record
- 2:19Speaker 1: typical buck in Wisconsin, and he ended up coming very
- 2:22Speaker 1: close to that. He killed the number two buck and
- 2:25Speaker 1: then I think I think it was the very next
- 2:27Speaker 1: year he replaced his number two with another number two.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So you know, this guy is he's on a different level.
- 2:35Speaker 1: He's just he's just doing something different than a lot
- 2:38Speaker 1: of people. Now. Eventually Andre decided to step away from
- 2:41Speaker 1: things a bit. He sold the company, he ended white
- 2:43Speaker 1: Tail Addictions, and kind of just stepped away from the
- 2:46Speaker 1: public scene. But Andre's back now. He's launched a new company,
- 2:50Speaker 1: it's called Lone Wolf Custom Gear, He's relaunched white Tail Addictions, uh,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and he's kept on targeting those top tier white tail
- 2:57Speaker 1: deer and as I mentioned, just doing this at a
- 3:00Speaker 1: rate and with a degree of precision that's just about
- 3:03Speaker 1: unmatched in the hunting world. Um. And I think what's
- 3:08Speaker 1: what's so unique about Andre, more than just his success,
- 3:12Speaker 1: is how many people point to him as being the
- 3:15Speaker 1: guy that taught them how to hunt mature bucks, or
- 3:18Speaker 1: who helped them jump to that next level, or who
- 3:21Speaker 1: is in their opinion, the very best out there. I've
- 3:23Speaker 1: talked to so many people and said, who do you
- 3:25Speaker 1: think is the best deer hunter? You know, and they say, oh,
- 3:27Speaker 1: Andre de Quisto and those people saying that those are
- 3:31Speaker 1: guys who I think are the best of the best,
- 3:33Speaker 1: So that that tells me something. From the outside looking in,
- 3:36Speaker 1: it just it seems like andres Is is kind of
- 3:40Speaker 1: the godfather of this aggressive, mobile kind of deer hunting
- 3:45Speaker 1: culture that's picked up so much steam over the last decade.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And that's all to say. I'm excited. I'm looking forward
- 3:52Speaker 1: to this one. This is a conversation I've wanted to
- 3:54Speaker 1: have and I'm glad we can share it with you guys. Now,
- 3:57Speaker 1: a few caveats before we get into it. First, I
- 4:01Speaker 1: do want to make it clear Andre is an experienced,
- 4:04Speaker 1: very goal oriented hunter. You're gonna hear when he talks here.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You're gonna hear that he specifically chooses to target the
- 4:11Speaker 1: biggest bucks around and he focuses on antler score of
- 4:14Speaker 1: those bucks to help quantify those goals and push him
- 4:17Speaker 1: as a deer hunter. And I think it's great for
- 4:19Speaker 1: anyone out there to have goals and to push yourself,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and think it's great for each of us to do
- 4:24Speaker 1: that in our own way. Now, I bring this up
- 4:26Speaker 1: because I don't want you to listen to this conversation
- 4:28Speaker 1: and hear how Andre quantifies his goals and talks about
- 4:31Speaker 1: his goals and has his goals. I don't want you
- 4:33Speaker 1: to hear that and then think that that's exactly what
- 4:36Speaker 1: you have to do too. You don't. You can if
- 4:38Speaker 1: you want, but you can do it your own way too.
- 4:40Speaker 1: If you want to kill the first dear you see, great.
- 4:43Speaker 1: If you want to pay attention to score, great. If
- 4:45Speaker 1: you don't, that's great too. If you're gonna go out
- 4:47Speaker 1: there and kill a year and a half old buck
- 4:49Speaker 1: and you're having a blast, more power to you. Same thing.
- 4:52Speaker 1: If you want to hold out for a three and
- 4:54Speaker 1: a half year old or a seven and a half
- 4:55Speaker 1: year old, hunt your own hunt. Don't feel pressured by
- 4:59Speaker 1: anybody else. Enjoy yourself, that is the most important thing.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Enjoy the whole experience. Enjoy the food, enjoy the landscape,
- 5:09Speaker 1: enjoy the quiet, and yet enjoy targeting a buck or
- 5:13Speaker 1: whatever kind of dear you are going after. Keep that
- 5:17Speaker 1: in mind as we listen this one. Secondly, there is
- 5:21Speaker 1: a decent amount of adult language in this episode, so
- 5:25Speaker 1: heads up, folks. We have tried to filter some of
- 5:27Speaker 1: that out, but there's still some in there. You have
- 5:29Speaker 1: had fair warning. Feel free to listen on if you're
- 5:32Speaker 1: okay with that, and if you are not okay with that,
- 5:35Speaker 1: just go ahead and get this one. Check back in
- 5:37Speaker 1: on our other episodes or the three hundred and sixty
- 5:40Speaker 1: episodes we have preceding this. Lots of good stuff there.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I just want to make sure we all have got
- 5:46Speaker 1: that out of the way. So there we go. Qualifiers, caveats,
- 5:50Speaker 1: heads up, side of the way. If you want to
- 5:52Speaker 1: listen and learn from one of the most talented, focused,
- 5:55Speaker 1: detail oriented, and deadly deer hunters out there, listen on
- 6:01Speaker 1: alright now with me on the line is Andre Dquisto. Andre,
- 6:05Speaker 1: Welcome to the show. Glad to be here. Yes, I
- 6:10Speaker 1: I agree. I'm excited this is happening. You've been You've
- 6:13Speaker 1: been someone on my radar ever since we started this
- 6:17Speaker 1: podcast in two thousand thirteen. I think, Um, I've I've
- 6:22Speaker 1: I've wanted to chat with you. Um, but you've you know,
- 6:27Speaker 1: you haven't been doing a lot of these things until recently.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So I'm really excited that now we can do it
- 6:31Speaker 1: and have this conversation. There's there's a lot of people
- 6:34Speaker 1: that are interested in and learning more from you, so
- 6:37Speaker 1: I appreciate you making the time to do it. I'm
- 6:40Speaker 1: glad too. It's it's interesting because especially this year, but
- 6:45Speaker 1: really over the course of I don't know, the last
- 6:47Speaker 1: five six years, so many of the people that have
- 6:50Speaker 1: been on the show and people that have really influenced
- 6:53Speaker 1: me and probably a lot of our listeners to really
- 6:55Speaker 1: really good deer hunters, many of them have pointed to
- 6:59Speaker 1: you as being a huge influence on them. I can't
- 7:02Speaker 1: tell you how many people I have talked to have said,
- 7:05Speaker 1: you know, Andre is probably the best deer hunter. I know,
- 7:07Speaker 1: he's the one who taught me this thing or that thing. Um,
- 7:10Speaker 1: there's like this this coaching tree of different people that
- 7:13Speaker 1: all point to you as being this this big major
- 7:16Speaker 1: factor on them, which which makes me wonder if if
- 7:20Speaker 1: all these people are pointing to you as the best
- 7:22Speaker 1: deer hunter, they know, who's the best deer hunter that
- 7:26Speaker 1: you know, this is gonna this is gonna sound a
- 7:30Speaker 1: little a little one side or loaded, but um, I
- 7:35Speaker 1: thought about that many of times. You know, the best
- 7:37Speaker 1: deer hunter out there is probably still still up and coming.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Um and I know a lot of them, A lot
- 7:43Speaker 1: of these guys on our White to addictions. A lot
- 7:45Speaker 1: of the guys that come up, just the guys that
- 7:47Speaker 1: you've talked about over the years, our phenomenal, phenomenal hunters. Um.
- 7:54Speaker 1: But I'm gonna say, looking at somebody first hand and watching, UM,
- 7:59Speaker 1: my son's probably not getting the credit due he is
- 8:03Speaker 1: more aggressive. Um, he's kind of taking my style and
- 8:08Speaker 1: and put it on Royds per se. Um. He gets
- 8:12Speaker 1: more opportunities. And that's how always was. I wasn't always
- 8:15Speaker 1: a great shot. I wasn't probably the best guy on arrange,
- 8:19Speaker 1: but I was a guy that can get get myself
- 8:22Speaker 1: more opportunities that dear to kill him. And I think
- 8:25Speaker 1: he's he's he's molded out of that same cast per se.
- 8:31Speaker 1: When he gets in his head, you know when he
- 8:32Speaker 1: gets you okay, Um, you know it's a couple of
- 8:35Speaker 1: days before that deer is on the ground. Um. He
- 8:38Speaker 1: just he just fund from down and goes aggress of it.
- 8:40Speaker 1: And so I'm gonna say, my son, okay, I like
- 8:44Speaker 1: that from from afarest. Definitely seems like the apple didn't
- 8:46Speaker 1: fall too far from the tree. Um. I gotta I
- 8:50Speaker 1: gotta wonder though I've listened to your guys recent podcast
- 8:55Speaker 1: series and and Cody and you are on there together
- 8:57Speaker 1: and you guys have some kind of entertaining and forth.
- 9:02Speaker 1: The father son. Yeah, yeah, there's always that interesting dynamic.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So I gotta wonder. So you just gave him the
- 9:08Speaker 1: big kudos. You just you just told everyone, tens of
- 9:11Speaker 1: thousands of people out there that that Cody might be
- 9:13Speaker 1: the best deer hunter out there that you know. So
- 9:16Speaker 1: I gotta believe, though, there's something that he does that
- 9:19Speaker 1: you just shake your head at and like think, what
- 9:21Speaker 1: is he doing? Is there anything that comes to mind
- 9:24Speaker 1: that you that Cody does that just either drives you
- 9:27Speaker 1: nuts when it comes to deer hunting, or that you
- 9:29Speaker 1: just can't believe he does it or surprises you. And
- 9:32Speaker 1: a lot of you know, a lot of people think
- 9:35Speaker 1: because he's he's my son and we have good leads
- 9:38Speaker 1: of the property, this kid cut loose from me years ago,
- 9:41Speaker 1: believe or not. He's living in a pretty big shot
- 9:43Speaker 1: okay um. And he goes off on his own and
- 9:47Speaker 1: and he figured stuff was on. He finally figured out
- 9:51Speaker 1: once he said to me day and why the hell
- 9:53Speaker 1: do you put these food pots up where we can't
- 9:56Speaker 1: kill anything on him? They're set up all wrong. And
- 9:59Speaker 1: I told months is, I don't want you to be
- 10:02Speaker 1: able to just jump on a food plot and kill
- 10:04Speaker 1: that deer. If you can figure out how to kill
- 10:06Speaker 1: that deer that's going to that food plot, um, somewhere
- 10:10Speaker 1: else or just not a property. I have the food
- 10:12Speaker 1: plots in there. Basically the hold deer and keep them
- 10:14Speaker 1: on this property. Um, but should become a better hunter,
- 10:17Speaker 1: you know. So it's see all scenario. You know, we
- 10:20Speaker 1: used to hunt over eight years ago. They used to
- 10:23Speaker 1: be legal in Wisconsin. And b it's a tool, and
- 10:27Speaker 1: it's a good tool, um, but I've seen too many
- 10:29Speaker 1: guys get caught up in that trap and they're good
- 10:33Speaker 1: at that, and then that's where it ends. And I'm
- 10:35Speaker 1: gonna tell you once and then bucks get off them
- 10:37Speaker 1: base and go and you're still hanging onto that ray
- 10:40Speaker 1: of hope over there. You're you're just all burnt, your
- 10:42Speaker 1: whole season up. So um, A good example of once
- 10:46Speaker 1: there was a deer on here, we we probably didn't
- 10:50Speaker 1: want to shoot, We're gonna let go, and it was
- 10:52Speaker 1: getting towards the end and it's a pretty decent deer
- 10:54Speaker 1: and I just kind of gave him the old kay
- 10:56Speaker 1: to you know what if that deer as you can
- 10:58Speaker 1: tie into him, take him down. And I was in
- 11:02Speaker 1: the living room with my wife and I see this
- 11:04Speaker 1: kid ripping up and down the streets. He had three
- 11:07Speaker 1: stands on the back of his freaking a TV back.
- 11:10Speaker 1: He went to one spot of the property another I'm like,
- 11:13Speaker 1: what the hell is he doing? He killed that deer
- 11:15Speaker 1: that night, just and he had all preset for probably
- 11:19Speaker 1: different winds, and was gonna go at the different angles,
- 11:21Speaker 1: but he just picked the you know, the first one
- 11:24Speaker 1: and got it. And so he kind of reminds me
- 11:26Speaker 1: of I was when I was younger. If I got
- 11:30Speaker 1: pissed off, or a deer pissed me off, it wasn't
- 11:32Speaker 1: to be too long before that thing was hitting the ground.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I would just get into a different mode or a
- 11:37Speaker 1: different attitude and just go at it. And now here
- 11:40Speaker 1: I am, you know, thirty years older, and I'm up
- 11:43Speaker 1: against me back thirty years ago, trying to trying to
- 11:47Speaker 1: compete on the Saint Peter ground. So it's uh um,
- 11:51Speaker 1: it's kind of a it's a new it's a new
- 11:54Speaker 1: new turner, new chapter. I'll say that. Yeah, So I
- 11:58Speaker 1: know that when you first got into deer hunting, you
- 12:00Speaker 1: got into a current if I'm wrong on this, but
- 12:02Speaker 1: does I understand that you first were into trapping, that
- 12:05Speaker 1: was that was your thing, and then we got ahold
- 12:08Speaker 1: of got ahold of a bow, and then that Alston
- 12:10Speaker 1: took over your life. Um, what was it once you
- 12:16Speaker 1: got into deer hunting that switched the light on for you?
- 12:21Speaker 1: Where you went from you know, just just being out
- 12:23Speaker 1: there hunting to all of a sudden hunting them down
- 12:26Speaker 1: the way you do, like you describe, You've evolved and changed.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Was there an aha moment? Yeah? The deer hunting, the
- 12:32Speaker 1: deer hunting. I think we had made it clear in
- 12:35Speaker 1: the pathwork. The deer hunting came in way later. I
- 12:38Speaker 1: hunted with a bowl. Actually we started hunting with clubs
- 12:41Speaker 1: before even had a bowl or a b by gun Um.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I was taught by some older, older guys that were
- 12:48Speaker 1: older brothers of a friend of mine, and watching somebody
- 12:53Speaker 1: with their bare hands going through the woods and come
- 12:56Speaker 1: out with rabbits and pheasants. Um, it's just just impressed
- 13:00Speaker 1: the hell out of me. Um. These guys were like
- 13:03Speaker 1: just in the military out of Vietnam and they were Um.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I watched the guy literally take a pheasant out of
- 13:10Speaker 1: midair with his bare hands. And I mean it just
- 13:12Speaker 1: impressed the young kid, you know. So so we started
- 13:15Speaker 1: doing that. We started clubbing along with him, and and
- 13:17Speaker 1: then we got into trapping and snaring and we got
- 13:21Speaker 1: um and I tell the story, people laugh. My first
- 13:23Speaker 1: bowl kill was a rabbit. I ran out of arrows
- 13:27Speaker 1: and I literally beat at the death and in the
- 13:29Speaker 1: deep snow with the the re curve. Um. So, and
- 13:33Speaker 1: I still have that raw mentality of I'm not still
- 13:39Speaker 1: to this day a very good shot. I'm not real
- 13:41Speaker 1: consistent on a range. But man, when it comes time
- 13:44Speaker 1: to to put an arrow on an animal, it just
- 13:46Speaker 1: seems like it's you know, instinctive, and instincts takeover and
- 13:49Speaker 1: that arrow just hits home. So Um, I've always had
- 13:53Speaker 1: that barbaric more thing. And I love scouting more than
- 13:56Speaker 1: I do hunting, believe it or not. I enjoy more
- 13:59Speaker 1: porking around looking at sign trails, tracks. Uh then I
- 14:03Speaker 1: do sitting to me, sitting in the tree stand. You know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: if we are boring, boring deal, it's a patient's game. UM,
- 14:09Speaker 1: let's refining my skills over the years. Um. You know
- 14:12Speaker 1: where you started out, you know, hunting generally I was
- 14:15Speaker 1: never a big rod hunter because that's where luck to
- 14:19Speaker 1: be would come into the case, and I have no luck.
- 14:22Speaker 1: So well, you're hunting a specific deer, I think, um, uh,
- 14:26Speaker 1: it's a whole different, full, different game. And I don't
- 14:29Speaker 1: know why that I started doing that. I actually, um,
- 14:34Speaker 1: just look back a bunch of pictures I had some
- 14:35Speaker 1: years ago. There was a lot and guys don't realize
- 14:38Speaker 1: that I was an absolute clown start now. Believe me.
- 14:41Speaker 1: It wasn't always a skilled hunter. Um. And I could
- 14:44Speaker 1: probably tell some stories that are embarrassing about starting out
- 14:47Speaker 1: hunting and um, but it's just you know, being out there,
- 14:53Speaker 1: being real perceptive. The way my my mind works, Um,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I researched. I everything that I see, I don't just basically,
- 15:04Speaker 1: you know, wander through the was namelessly. Everything I see here,
- 15:06Speaker 1: I'm staking up. And when I've seen the currents happening,
- 15:09Speaker 1: I learned something from its soul. Um. It's been a
- 15:13Speaker 1: long long well it was. It been forty years now,
- 15:17Speaker 1: so agatting back to that, looking at the pictures, there's
- 15:20Speaker 1: a bunch of tiny little deer. I look at guys
- 15:22Speaker 1: first year nowadays, I said, you should see my first
- 15:24Speaker 1: year you know, you could put a grape fruit in
- 15:25Speaker 1: between the the antlers of it. And there was a
- 15:28Speaker 1: lot of small deer up until then. And I think
- 15:30Speaker 1: you don't want to what really drove me? UM? I
- 15:33Speaker 1: was always an athlete, UM a record type goal. Aren't
- 15:37Speaker 1: at a guy? When I shot that first book and
- 15:40Speaker 1: it was a one eight and it was like a
- 15:45Speaker 1: score of something, UM, it gave me a goal to
- 15:49Speaker 1: work for. I was always go orientated. And then it
- 15:52Speaker 1: was like something lit up in me, and and every
- 15:56Speaker 1: deer all the way up to like UM eighty in shirt.
- 16:00Speaker 1: My score of a white tail had never never gone back,
- 16:03Speaker 1: which I don't know if a lot of people know.
- 16:05Speaker 1: I know I told a story before, but so if
- 16:08Speaker 1: there was a one, then it went to one thirty two,
- 16:11Speaker 1: then it went to one eight, then it went to
- 16:14Speaker 1: I had I had a buck one year who was
- 16:16Speaker 1: in the fifties. I let him go three different times
- 16:20Speaker 1: to shoot a deer that was like one fifty seven,
- 16:22Speaker 1: like five inches bigger than the one that was there.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I was just had that set in my mind. So
- 16:28Speaker 1: UM always been going atated, always about to score, and
- 16:32Speaker 1: still to this day it's UM. You're always looking for
- 16:34Speaker 1: something bigger than you had before, um you know, which
- 16:38Speaker 1: which could get pretty tough nowadays too. So has that
- 16:41Speaker 1: ever has that ever come back to bite you? Or
- 16:44Speaker 1: have you ever felt like that's you ended up not
- 16:47Speaker 1: being happy with something because of the score, or is it?
- 16:51Speaker 1: Is it that gold driven thing always been good because
- 16:56Speaker 1: I never shot anythings more than I wanted to. So whatever,
- 16:58Speaker 1: I shop and I a whole ton of deer that
- 17:01Speaker 1: are like a hundred and sixty nine inches. So when
- 17:04Speaker 1: I once I started getting to the point where the
- 17:06Speaker 1: deer were so big that you're you're probably not gonna,
- 17:08Speaker 1: you know, find one for every five years, I set
- 17:11Speaker 1: my goal to like net Boone and Crockett type deer
- 17:14Speaker 1: and and it's weird, boy, I see it here, and
- 17:15Speaker 1: I know, I just know they're going to be an
- 17:18Speaker 1: inch short. That one that I took just missed the
- 17:20Speaker 1: state record by like an inch and a half. Dude,
- 17:23Speaker 1: I knew on the hoof it was gonna be about
- 17:26Speaker 1: an inch and a half short. Ended up being an
- 17:27Speaker 1: inch and and that's frustrating. But um so I never
- 17:32Speaker 1: really made a mistake of going, you know, I'm looking
- 17:34Speaker 1: for a one seventy and shoot, I'm one fifty. I
- 17:36Speaker 1: just didn't happen. And it's you know, it's a million
- 17:38Speaker 1: miles apart. So uh no, I never regretted. Really, Um,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you know, my my goal was to shoot a typical
- 17:46Speaker 1: and the tube on a range. My my ultimate goal
- 17:49Speaker 1: was to have a state record someday in Wisconsin. I
- 17:52Speaker 1: failed at that toise, Um, I shot one that would
- 17:55Speaker 1: have been number two in Illinois one year to missed
- 17:58Speaker 1: that number one, And then I always had this fantasy
- 18:00Speaker 1: to shoot a world record typical book and that's like
- 18:04Speaker 1: a needle in a haystack. But I'm gonna tell you
- 18:06Speaker 1: there they're out there. Um they're getting shot with guns
- 18:10Speaker 1: or finding sheds, and but it's still just you have
- 18:13Speaker 1: no idea what you know, what accomplishing a goal like
- 18:17Speaker 1: that could be. And I'm happy and sad to say
- 18:21Speaker 1: I've been in the game with two that I think
- 18:22Speaker 1: would have made it and I got my ass kicked
- 18:24Speaker 1: both times. So um it was. It was a fun,
- 18:28Speaker 1: fun run. Now I don't know if I if I
- 18:29Speaker 1: got you know, fueling the tank to to ever achieved
- 18:33Speaker 1: that again. But um, I'm not traveling states, you know,
- 18:36Speaker 1: kind of parking in Iowa, I could shoot legally three
- 18:38Speaker 1: bucks a year out here, and I don't you know,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I shoot a buck here there. Um. And now that
- 18:45Speaker 1: the show is back on and we're doing products, you know,
- 18:47Speaker 1: things are changing a little bit. Yeah, that's that's what
- 18:51Speaker 1: I was kind of wondering, was if if you still
- 18:53Speaker 1: have that drive to try to chase that two others
- 18:56Speaker 1: typical or that record. But it sounds like kind of
- 18:59Speaker 1: settling into new set of goals. Yeah. Well, don't get
- 19:02Speaker 1: me wrong, buddy, you told me where one's at, I'll
- 19:04Speaker 1: probably there with to do it. Yeah. So somebody on
- 19:08Speaker 1: our page made a statement like, well we should find
- 19:11Speaker 1: a deer for Andre to hunt and um on some
- 19:14Speaker 1: public just tell the colony is where of that and
- 19:16Speaker 1: let him let him go at it. Dude, You find
- 19:19Speaker 1: that dear and use the use the caliber number one.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I'll be there camping out and I will I will
- 19:23Speaker 1: go ahead them long and hard until I die. It's
- 19:26Speaker 1: just that there's not you know, with cameras now you
- 19:29Speaker 1: kind of know what your deults. Even on our property,
- 19:32Speaker 1: we know just a lot everything that's on earlier. Um,
- 19:35Speaker 1: So for you to have something on the piece that
- 19:38Speaker 1: you're on that caliber, that's it. That's like winning a
- 19:42Speaker 1: lot of really um or being awful lucky to it.
- 19:45Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, when it comes to you know what
- 19:50Speaker 1: you would do in that situation. Let's say if someone said,
- 19:53Speaker 1: I've got this buck. This probably a world record, Andre,
- 19:56Speaker 1: come take a swing at it. Um. I want to
- 19:59Speaker 1: kind of understand and how you would go about tracking
- 20:03Speaker 1: down a buck like that. But before that, I kind
- 20:06Speaker 1: of want to try to understand a little bit better
- 20:10Speaker 1: how you approach this from the mental side of things,
- 20:14Speaker 1: because I think when I listen to talk, when I
- 20:16Speaker 1: see the things you do, you've got to really in
- 20:19Speaker 1: a you know, an incredible sense of like the xs
- 20:21Speaker 1: and os of deer hunting and how to set up
- 20:23Speaker 1: and all that. But then you also have this mindset
- 20:26Speaker 1: and this drive that I think separates you two and
- 20:30Speaker 1: and and I'm curious if we were trying to recreate
- 20:34Speaker 1: the next best deer hunter, and I told you that
- 20:36Speaker 1: you could either give him your mental drive or your
- 20:39Speaker 1: your mental kind of just state that you take in hunting.
- 20:44Speaker 1: You can either give them that, or you can give
- 20:46Speaker 1: them all of the XS and o's analogy you have,
- 20:48Speaker 1: but not both. Which would you say is more important?
- 20:53Speaker 1: You know, I wouldn't want to give him what I have.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I think, and I don't know this for sure on
- 20:57Speaker 1: all the studies on it, but people are realize that
- 21:00Speaker 1: I'm the flexic and I have some learning kind of
- 21:03Speaker 1: disabilities that are frustrating and older I get and I
- 21:08Speaker 1: look at stuff totally different than other people do. And
- 21:12Speaker 1: and I don't know if that helps in the game
- 21:13Speaker 1: of white tail hunting, but it is frustrating in just
- 21:17Speaker 1: the world of you know, navigating through through just life.
- 21:20Speaker 1: So if a guy had to have that, if that's
- 21:23Speaker 1: what helps me read sign more and and dissect things more,
- 21:27Speaker 1: um I'd give them that ability. But I should help
- 21:30Speaker 1: and wish it on him in his normal day to
- 21:32Speaker 1: day is because um, I mean, I can't, like I
- 21:35Speaker 1: explained things as simple as I'll walk up to a
- 21:37Speaker 1: door handle and I'll grab ahold of it and open up.
- 21:41Speaker 1: And I want to know why somebody designed that thing
- 21:43Speaker 1: the shape that they did that, Why what what drew
- 21:45Speaker 1: him to do that? Or these ice cubes that actually
- 21:48Speaker 1: blocked the fluid from from a cup that you're drinking
- 21:51Speaker 1: out of, Like what moron and creaking design and ice
- 21:53Speaker 1: cube that you know, and it's there, it's everywhere. Why
- 21:55Speaker 1: hasn't somebody changed that? Why hasn't somebody done some about
- 21:58Speaker 1: So when I'm in the woods and I see stuff, it's, um,
- 22:02Speaker 1: I give it. For example, we went we went to
- 22:04Speaker 1: a spot in Quincy only once, and I took a
- 22:05Speaker 1: friend of mine and we did some scouting and I
- 22:09Speaker 1: just to this christ. I had part of my friends.
- 22:12Speaker 1: But I went through a spot that I just thought
- 22:13Speaker 1: had it through it. I was like, and I just
- 22:15Speaker 1: walked him through it, and I watched him neandering through
- 22:19Speaker 1: looking at us. What do you think of the spot?
- 22:21Speaker 1: And he's looking up in the trees. Yeah, that sounds
- 22:23Speaker 1: like you can get a tree stand in here? Like
- 22:25Speaker 1: what is the having a good good a tree stand
- 22:27Speaker 1: here or a spot you know, being able to put
- 22:29Speaker 1: a stand in or having a decent spot for a
- 22:31Speaker 1: tree stand You happen to do it. Anything you're looking
- 22:34Speaker 1: for here, you look for the deer first, the tree
- 22:37Speaker 1: stands a tool. Uh. You read the sign and you
- 22:40Speaker 1: go hunt the spot and you apply when direction thermal
- 22:45Speaker 1: stands to that and you go after him. Um, you
- 22:48Speaker 1: made a statement about what I would do to go
- 22:50Speaker 1: after him. I know somebody another podcast mentioned that I
- 22:53Speaker 1: was talking to about me to somebody else and mentioned
- 22:56Speaker 1: a friend of mine that it was kind of a
- 22:57Speaker 1: little cocky and and he was kind of going to bathroom. No, No,
- 23:01Speaker 1: he's really not. And I said, what are you talking about.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I'm as cocky as they get when it comes to
- 23:07Speaker 1: what I want to do. So I don't, man, I
- 23:09Speaker 1: have all the confidence in the world. I will not
- 23:12Speaker 1: be intimidated by just an animal. I've been in the
- 23:14Speaker 1: game enough time. Um. So that's part of it where
- 23:20Speaker 1: most guys are gonna have to get over. You're gonna
- 23:22Speaker 1: have to kill some caliber animals under your belt and
- 23:25Speaker 1: you comfortable. Otherwise you're gonna be shaking in your boots
- 23:28Speaker 1: when they come in or um. But I mean I
- 23:32Speaker 1: just like I said, I go after I go after
- 23:33Speaker 1: it a lot, a lot harder and more confident than
- 23:37Speaker 1: most most guys ever would so uh to the deer
- 23:40Speaker 1: that we were hunting in Wisconsin, I had to shut
- 23:43Speaker 1: to it the year before I came close to killing it.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Thank god I didn't. It would have been you know,
- 23:49Speaker 1: Boone Crockett that year. But just at the last second
- 23:53Speaker 1: he throws up and just wouldn't step on a swamp,
- 23:56Speaker 1: found a shot to it, and then we were, you know,
- 23:58Speaker 1: had cameras out that was the old home cameras years ago,
- 24:01Speaker 1: and me and a buddy of mine went to Walgreens
- 24:04Speaker 1: and we were looking through the pictures and boom, there
- 24:06Speaker 1: he was. Right. I look over my friend and his
- 24:10Speaker 1: jaws dropped. I'm looking. We're looking around like it's just
- 24:12Speaker 1: you know, somebody looking at they're gonna see this like
- 24:15Speaker 1: it was funny. But he's like, he's like Storry said, well,
- 24:19Speaker 1: and I'm just like ready to get the hill out
- 24:20Speaker 1: of and what are you gonna do? I don't know
- 24:22Speaker 1: what you're gonna do, but I'm gonna swamp and killing
- 24:23Speaker 1: his buck. And I left and he just he didn't
- 24:26Speaker 1: know what to do, you know, so kind of an
- 24:27Speaker 1: experience hunter, but but a good guy. I went home
- 24:32Speaker 1: and it just I tore all my ship out through
- 24:34Speaker 1: it all on the freaking uh kitchen table, I started,
- 24:38Speaker 1: what what do I need here? What I absolutely do
- 24:41Speaker 1: not need. I'm gonna lighten the stuff started taking up
- 24:43Speaker 1: silence and everything. I was getting ready for the game
- 24:45Speaker 1: because the games felt to begin. Then I had some
- 24:49Speaker 1: brainstorm that I was gonna take a camera with me.
- 24:51Speaker 1: This is when we were doing the show and I
- 24:53Speaker 1: was gonna go into the swamp and hunt this down
- 24:55Speaker 1: and knee high muck. And I got in about two
- 25:01Speaker 1: days and I thought, Okay, this this ain't gonna happen.
- 25:04Speaker 1: This is a physical shift. So I needed that piece
- 25:07Speaker 1: of information that I always need. I need to know
- 25:10Speaker 1: where he betted. I know what he did last year.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I kind of got some history of this here. I
- 25:14Speaker 1: went into where I thought he was and I jumped
- 25:16Speaker 1: that sucker out of his bed and I backed out,
- 25:19Speaker 1: and I set up on that betting area and I
- 25:22Speaker 1: just waited um to pre rut where he showed up
- 25:25Speaker 1: last year on that field. And believe it or not,
- 25:27Speaker 1: that deer showed up the same freaking day. It did
- 25:30Speaker 1: because my brother was actually hunting that field and seeing
- 25:32Speaker 1: that deer um the first day I showed up and
- 25:35Speaker 1: it was running our our clover food plot there. So there,
- 25:39Speaker 1: I kind of had enough to know that I'm not
- 25:41Speaker 1: going to be able to go in there every day,
- 25:43Speaker 1: in and out. You know, with all the filmings, it's
- 25:46Speaker 1: a burden. You know. We lightened it up, we've made
- 25:48Speaker 1: it easier, but it's it's it's again, it's more weight,
- 25:51Speaker 1: it's more equipment. Um, so I basically uh took the
- 25:56Speaker 1: knowledge and new and and set up and it and
- 25:58Speaker 1: it all panned out and worked out. Um, he was
- 26:00Speaker 1: better right where he was before made the move, and
- 26:03Speaker 1: I was right there to put an air on him.
- 26:05Speaker 1: So UM, I've heard you say in the past that
- 26:09Speaker 1: you don't give a lot of value to year old
- 26:12Speaker 1: sign that you mostly just prefer like red hot fresh sign. Um.
- 26:17Speaker 1: But it sounds like maybe in some cases you do
- 26:20Speaker 1: look at some of the older stuff or I guess,
- 26:23Speaker 1: what do you find valuable from offseason scouting? What can
- 26:26Speaker 1: we pick up? What are you doing? So on that deer,
- 26:29Speaker 1: there was no age old sign. It was just the
- 26:31Speaker 1: history of that deer living on that property. But I
- 26:34Speaker 1: went and bumped him out of his bed a week
- 26:35Speaker 1: before I killed him. So that's pretty red hot that
- 26:38Speaker 1: he was living in there. And it's just seeing where
- 26:40Speaker 1: the buck was bettered. I mean, there's nothing all the
- 26:44Speaker 1: same capitiles, redbrush, no structural just that sweet spot that
- 26:49Speaker 1: that deer probably grew up in. A Funny thing too,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I was like the add this, I found a shed
- 26:57Speaker 1: after that deer was harvested, and just the chips in
- 26:59Speaker 1: the muck, And believe it or not, it was a
- 27:00Speaker 1: shed to that deer. I still got that in my
- 27:02Speaker 1: garage from two years earlier. I don't know if that
- 27:04Speaker 1: was kind of some weird omen or whatever, but so
- 27:06Speaker 1: that deer grew up on that property lived there. Um,
- 27:09Speaker 1: you gotta be on red hot signs. You know all
- 27:13Speaker 1: that information you got from last year that you know
- 27:15Speaker 1: it's um where rubs were made and all that stuff.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Stuff changes, and I've never, um, I've never been able
- 27:24Speaker 1: to sit confident spot that I didn't know, like what
- 27:27Speaker 1: was over the next hill or what I pictured that
- 27:29Speaker 1: deer sitting there. I picture him in his bed, and
- 27:31Speaker 1: I picture him. I wanted to get up and do
- 27:33Speaker 1: what he's gonna do. So it's like I said, I
- 27:35Speaker 1: think I come in the end of a totally different
- 27:37Speaker 1: um aspect, and a lot of guys do that. Just
- 27:40Speaker 1: will just sit there and all of a sudden, the
- 27:41Speaker 1: deer will show up. You know. Um, I'm actually thinking
- 27:45Speaker 1: this damn thing in You're wishing to found that trail
- 27:48Speaker 1: and put them into scenario that I've played in my
- 27:50Speaker 1: mind a million times and it's all coming together. It's um. Um,
- 27:55Speaker 1: it's just like sports. You know, you you're practice in
- 27:58Speaker 1: your mind that perfect volt or perfect lift or um,
- 28:02Speaker 1: you've you've been here, you've lived already and now it's
- 28:04Speaker 1: you know it's coming toolition. So um, So there's about
- 28:09Speaker 1: ten tho things I want to drill into a little
- 28:11Speaker 1: bit more on what you just mentioned. But but first,
- 28:15Speaker 1: if if the red hot sign is is the very
- 28:17Speaker 1: most important stuff, it's all that in season stuff. What
- 28:21Speaker 1: what are you doing like right now until opening day?
- 28:24Speaker 1: Is there is there something valuable that we can be
- 28:26Speaker 1: getting preseason? For me? That that's all I need to know, right.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I mean, I know this, um, and I may statement
- 28:33Speaker 1: there's pieces of this property I haven't been on. Every
- 28:35Speaker 1: year we shout help, we go to spots that you know,
- 28:38Speaker 1: we just don't go into because it's just it doesn't
- 28:41Speaker 1: it doesn't make any sense too. But I know this
- 28:42Speaker 1: piece of property and style, if a deer shows up,
- 28:45Speaker 1: I'm basically all about inventory. So I gotta know that
- 28:48Speaker 1: that deer is there. And my biggest thing from all
- 28:51Speaker 1: the years is and what what cameras really did for
- 28:54Speaker 1: me is, um, I don't want to have to make
- 28:57Speaker 1: a last minute decision. Um. Every time I've ever had
- 29:01Speaker 1: to do that kind of screwed up. If it's a
- 29:04Speaker 1: deer I want to harvest. If I'm already committed to
- 29:07Speaker 1: that animal and I see him, man, there's a lot
- 29:11Speaker 1: better chance that deer's getting killed. And you know here
- 29:13Speaker 1: he's coming down a trail. He's at forty now he's produced.
- 29:15Speaker 1: He big enough. You know my should I shoot him? Should? I? Not?
- 29:19Speaker 1: Very very bad situation to be on. Um, it's it's
- 29:22Speaker 1: just you know, ripe with mistakes. So UM, I like
- 29:27Speaker 1: to do that inventory. No, they're there, and if that
- 29:29Speaker 1: deer's on this property, I mean, if I can't tie
- 29:31Speaker 1: into that deer in a season long, um, I think
- 29:35Speaker 1: I'm not worth the salt. I'm made it. You know,
- 29:37Speaker 1: do you do you have a buck that you've got
- 29:41Speaker 1: your eyes on yet? Do you have the one picked out? Uh?
- 29:45Speaker 1: We found some chats. Hopefully he's back and if it's
- 29:48Speaker 1: invite one of those it feels back, it will be
- 29:50Speaker 1: it's a one or none season. Um. Yeah, I'll go
- 29:54Speaker 1: after him hard. I do have a pretty tough competitor
- 29:56Speaker 1: to go against. Um, which it will make things a
- 30:00Speaker 1: little more interesting. But UM, I'm not going to have
- 30:05Speaker 1: him back office or UM. If it's out there, you
- 30:08Speaker 1: know he's got the opportunity to get it, but yeah,
- 30:10Speaker 1: it'll be it'll be a deer that I would be
- 30:12Speaker 1: happy harveston and one that I love to play the
- 30:14Speaker 1: game with um and hopefully doesn't just roll over and
- 30:18Speaker 1: and and play debt on me. And he gives me
- 30:20Speaker 1: a run for my money this year, and I have
- 30:21Speaker 1: another good deal of memories to Yeah, I've heard that
- 30:26Speaker 1: you liked those deer that make you work for him
- 30:29Speaker 1: through a long period of ups and downs. I think
- 30:32Speaker 1: I think I remember hearing you talking about a buck
- 30:35Speaker 1: that was maybe your most memorable one took you just
- 30:37Speaker 1: through the wringer and had all sorts of mishaps. Then
- 30:40Speaker 1: when you finally killed them, it it means so much more, right,
- 30:43Speaker 1: is that? Is that stity case? So I'm looking at
- 30:46Speaker 1: that deer right now. It's in the living room and
- 30:48Speaker 1: it's a it's a hundred and fifty seven inch growth.
- 30:52Speaker 1: It shouldn't be in that room. But that deer there, uh,
- 30:56Speaker 1: all of them probably gave me the biggest run for
- 30:57Speaker 1: my money. So um, yeah, it's I don't know if
- 31:01Speaker 1: it's I'm my mile's favorite, because she said I was
- 31:04Speaker 1: the worst, almost killed her in birth and and the
- 31:06Speaker 1: pain and agony she went through. There must be some
- 31:08Speaker 1: kind of psychotic freaking bond with that type of misery
- 31:11Speaker 1: that just um connects to the stuff so um that
- 31:16Speaker 1: that dear dude, I had tears in my eyes. It
- 31:19Speaker 1: was like the last freaking day I had the opportunity
- 31:22Speaker 1: I could not get my bull back. I had the
- 31:24Speaker 1: worst buck fever all that season built up, and I
- 31:26Speaker 1: was like, and everything I could do is get that
- 31:28Speaker 1: thing back. It was the ultimate ultimate high for a
- 31:31Speaker 1: bull hunt that I've experienced. So what what did that
- 31:34Speaker 1: buck teach you? Was there anything that after that season
- 31:37Speaker 1: and all those trials and tribulations, is there anything point
- 31:40Speaker 1: to like, Wow, I really came by all those challenges
- 31:43Speaker 1: now learning this thing, I don't know if I really
- 31:48Speaker 1: learned the last stitch effort where people talk about that
- 31:53Speaker 1: right on the edge of that wind. I know that
- 31:55Speaker 1: the setup that I set up the last final one
- 31:57Speaker 1: because I've seen him from distance come come out of
- 32:00Speaker 1: that area, and I knew it was gonna be a
- 32:02Speaker 1: tough wind deal and I had to play it on
- 32:04Speaker 1: the edge. He did come out, he started to win,
- 32:07Speaker 1: and he started even easing a little more of my
- 32:09Speaker 1: way to type, you know, to get as much as
- 32:11Speaker 1: he could, and if you just took one more step
- 32:14Speaker 1: you probably got he'd have got my sentiment gone. But
- 32:17Speaker 1: I just played that one to the tea. Um. But
- 32:21Speaker 1: like I said, he you know, he was running circles
- 32:23Speaker 1: around me the whole year. So I don't I don't
- 32:24Speaker 1: know if, but that was the thing that that that
- 32:28Speaker 1: got me that specific beer. So, UM, that wind setup
- 32:32Speaker 1: seems to be something that you've really fine tuned. Yeah,
- 32:36Speaker 1: and we can go into depth about all of that.
- 32:39Speaker 1: That's um. Yeah, it's the most important thing with with hunting, sun,
- 32:46Speaker 1: sund control of winds and things like that. So yeah,
- 32:48Speaker 1: I do want to break that down, but I want
- 32:50Speaker 1: to I want to first figure out one thing. Um,
- 32:54Speaker 1: this Buckey's mentioned you said that you were hunting all
- 32:56Speaker 1: the way through the season. I'm not sure exactly how
- 32:59Speaker 1: which part of the season it was, but I'm assuming
- 33:01Speaker 1: it was most of the year. Um. I've heard you
- 33:05Speaker 1: talk about that when you find a buck that you want,
- 33:08Speaker 1: you start hunting him on October one, on opening day,
- 33:11Speaker 1: and you stay on him. You just keep getting after
- 33:12Speaker 1: and getting after him. And and what I don't understand
- 33:15Speaker 1: is how you can do that without blowing them out
- 33:19Speaker 1: of there, without busting your chances. I'm always so worried
- 33:21Speaker 1: about you know, that's the thing. Everyone's so worried about that.
- 33:26Speaker 1: How do you manage that? Well? You? I mean, it's
- 33:31Speaker 1: experienced and it's you can't. So I've seen it enough
- 33:35Speaker 1: because I scalped. Dude, I've I scaled so much and
- 33:38Speaker 1: I take it right to the edge. I gets so
- 33:40Speaker 1: close to some of these big books that you take.
- 33:43Speaker 1: You take it a little too far. And dude, I've
- 33:46Speaker 1: literally had it where I've just poking around some some
- 33:49Speaker 1: thickets and cattails and red brusher. I think these things
- 33:52Speaker 1: that are being this whole mess and I I turned
- 33:54Speaker 1: on my left and here is this monster freaking stare
- 33:57Speaker 1: minutes who as we make eye contact, boomies over you
- 33:59Speaker 1: just all the time. Like I knew, I should have
- 34:01Speaker 1: stopped at that freaking tree that I picked out before.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I want to poke a little further and a little deeper.
- 34:05Speaker 1: And sometimes you just take it a little but you
- 34:10Speaker 1: you learn. And I'm gonna tell you right now, I
- 34:12Speaker 1: don't care. And you got guys can argue up in
- 34:15Speaker 1: your body. I've seen it so many times and done
- 34:16Speaker 1: it so many times. You are not gonna burn a
- 34:19Speaker 1: white tail out of his out of his home range.
- 34:22Speaker 1: They'll run circles around you, he'll sit tight, still dark,
- 34:25Speaker 1: or he'll know you're hunting, but um, you're not gonna
- 34:28Speaker 1: do it. And then you get the guys all the
- 34:30Speaker 1: time that to say, well, you know, and and and
- 34:31Speaker 1: they're right, they got small properties and things of that nature.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Um that they have to be a little more careful.
- 34:37Speaker 1: What so that's that's probably not a technique for a
- 34:39Speaker 1: guy that's got you know, ten acres a hunt or whatever.
- 34:41Speaker 1: But I had a pretty substantial lease down in Illinois
- 34:44Speaker 1: and used to have it to myself a lot of times.
- 34:46Speaker 1: And I swear to god, them deer would come out.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I see him come out of a a field edge, and
- 34:50Speaker 1: they'd be freaking looking around, like where is he gonna
- 34:52Speaker 1: where is he gonna come from from this time? That's
- 34:54Speaker 1: the kind of look that they had in their face.
- 34:56Speaker 1: And but if their range, uh and and you know
- 34:59Speaker 1: some of these bigger here, dominant deer, they're they're in
- 35:03Speaker 1: the king pin area. You can piss over their scrapes.
- 35:06Speaker 1: They're gonna piss over you. They'll see where you're know
- 35:10Speaker 1: where you're sitting a standing, I'll come and a rip
- 35:11Speaker 1: and I treat that you're in there. They're sending you
- 35:13Speaker 1: a message, you're sutting down message and it's a it's
- 35:16Speaker 1: a it's an enjoying game. Man. You're getting me pumped
- 35:19Speaker 1: and want to get out there and look around now
- 35:20Speaker 1: again here, So I got work to do. Yeah, I
- 35:23Speaker 1: don't want to get you in trouble and get you
- 35:25Speaker 1: behind on orders or anything. So much of what you're
- 35:29Speaker 1: doing is is just getting aggressive with that scouting and
- 35:32Speaker 1: pinpointing exactly what they're doing, and then you're adjusting and
- 35:34Speaker 1: then search more than a just but what does that
- 35:37Speaker 1: look like just prior to the season. So I'm just
- 35:40Speaker 1: trying to like ease our way into October one and
- 35:43Speaker 1: opening day. What do you when does that scouting start?
- 35:46Speaker 1: It's it's totally different if it's a whole new property
- 35:49Speaker 1: that would have attacking or if it's the property since
- 35:50Speaker 1: the property I know inside now, right, So I just
- 35:54Speaker 1: need to know now my biggest thing right now, and
- 35:56Speaker 1: I haven't done it. I need to get more cameras
- 35:58Speaker 1: out and I need to get spread out more and
- 36:00Speaker 1: I need to get a glimpse that this deer is
- 36:02Speaker 1: back this year, and if he's back then from what
- 36:07Speaker 1: I know about him from last year, I know he
- 36:09Speaker 1: betted last year and his whole um, this whole scenario,
- 36:12Speaker 1: I don't have to get as crazy as I I
- 36:15Speaker 1: would to go in, you know, aggressively. I've already learned
- 36:17Speaker 1: this piece of property. If this is a new piece
- 36:19Speaker 1: of property, I want to learn a piece of property
- 36:21Speaker 1: inside now, because I cannot stand, like I said, sitting
- 36:24Speaker 1: in a tree stand and not knowing what is over
- 36:27Speaker 1: that next hill and what's over the next hill there.
- 36:30Speaker 1: I got this this mind that just as mechanical, and
- 36:34Speaker 1: that I need to have all of that puzzle or
- 36:38Speaker 1: pieces to start putting together. So I don't go in.
- 36:41Speaker 1: You know, if you go go in a handful of
- 36:43Speaker 1: a piece of puzzle and I just in my mind,
- 36:45Speaker 1: it just won't work. So and the other thing I
- 36:47Speaker 1: say too was this, I look at things different than
- 36:51Speaker 1: other people. For you to just jump in and try
- 36:53Speaker 1: and do what I do if you don't know how
- 36:56Speaker 1: to read or um perceive, I'm going to the point
- 37:00Speaker 1: now where uh you know, they said, you know you
- 37:04Speaker 1: need to be reading that sign and get in there.
- 37:07Speaker 1: You need to be in the spot that signs will
- 37:08Speaker 1: be made next and ahead of that game, not like
- 37:11Speaker 1: one step behind. Um. So coming up all the way
- 37:15Speaker 1: reading sign, you know, I see a fresh track, I
- 37:17Speaker 1: get on it right away. It seems like me. If
- 37:19Speaker 1: you see something, you pounce on it right away. You
- 37:21Speaker 1: don't ever want to sit because in two days it
- 37:23Speaker 1: changes up. So if you're right there, right there, right there,
- 37:26Speaker 1: you're in your best scenario. Um. But imagine now being
- 37:30Speaker 1: able to know one enough that the seasons changing, the
- 37:33Speaker 1: crops are coming down, is a different stage of the rout.
- 37:37Speaker 1: You just start going and looking. You're gonna be where
- 37:39Speaker 1: that deer is gonna be making us next sign. You're
- 37:41Speaker 1: already step ahead of him. Um. And when you get
- 37:44Speaker 1: into that state of the game, I mean your your
- 37:46Speaker 1: chances go up. Um. Now, is that just experience that
- 37:50Speaker 1: gets you from the point where you're hunting, you know,
- 37:52Speaker 1: week goal sign to now predicting where sign is going
- 37:55Speaker 1: to be? Is that just time? It's just from years
- 37:58Speaker 1: and years of all. Like I said, I still enjoy
- 37:59Speaker 1: the to stay looking around, and I did it again
- 38:04Speaker 1: last year. There was one to hear during get killed
- 38:06Speaker 1: by a neighbor. But a couple of years ago where
- 38:10Speaker 1: I was doing on the fold of the front of mine.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I'm sitting in the stand, I know, and and it's like,
- 38:13Speaker 1: you know, this is it's a phenomenal spot. It's usually
- 38:16Speaker 1: when I was spot it's like, man, it's just not happening.
- 38:18Speaker 1: I gotta get get down and just over the freak
- 38:21Speaker 1: just so I can talk about just over the hill,
- 38:23Speaker 1: there was a freaking party going on. There was a
- 38:25Speaker 1: doll and heating there, and that buckles in there chasing around.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I could almost shot that thing if I would have
- 38:30Speaker 1: been a good shot along just since I got shot
- 38:31Speaker 1: that thing on the ground, it was not leaving a
- 38:33Speaker 1: dolls tight. I tried to make a move to another
- 38:36Speaker 1: stand where they were going through, and they just got
- 38:37Speaker 1: around me. And it was like and I was sitting
- 38:40Speaker 1: for two days there in the in an excellent spot actually,
- 38:44Speaker 1: And you know, if I would have poked around a
- 38:46Speaker 1: little bit more than I um like I normally do,
- 38:49Speaker 1: I probably would have been over the hill sitting and
- 38:52Speaker 1: got my opportunity out of the stand. So it's just
- 38:55Speaker 1: you know, when that changes, and then that dog goes
- 38:57Speaker 1: out of heat or whatever, he chases across the road
- 38:59Speaker 1: or and go some other doll and it's you know,
- 39:01Speaker 1: you're not gonna see that buck for another who those
- 39:03Speaker 1: ones the late season, you know, so um, get out
- 39:07Speaker 1: why it's hot, staying at while it's hot, don't ever backpedal.
- 39:10Speaker 1: The biggest thing in UH tragedy ever seen is people
- 39:14Speaker 1: saying that they don't want to over hunt the stand
- 39:15Speaker 1: that it's they don't want to screw it up, or
- 39:17Speaker 1: you know what it is. It's the feel of fear
- 39:19Speaker 1: of failure. And I've failed so many fricking times at this.
- 39:23Speaker 1: And if you're gonna sit and you're gonna worry about
- 39:28Speaker 1: bumping that deer, messing up And that's what we've all
- 39:30Speaker 1: been talked to d from all the articles, from all
- 39:32Speaker 1: the years, you know, leave the think where you do this,
- 39:35Speaker 1: do that, And I've just from experience learning it is
- 39:38Speaker 1: totally not that way. Um. And you know, some guys
- 39:43Speaker 1: could still argue with to this day. But I watched,
- 39:46Speaker 1: you know, I I hunt betting areas. I'm seeing big
- 39:49Speaker 1: bucket sit down on their beds come out of here.
- 39:52Speaker 1: I'm watching, you know, groups of coyotes running them off
- 39:54Speaker 1: their betting areas and turn right around, coming back right
- 39:57Speaker 1: to the same bed. I'm watching, you know, myself bumping
- 39:59Speaker 1: them out and I'm going right back to the bed.
- 40:01Speaker 1: So I don't know where all that stuff came from,
- 40:03Speaker 1: but I believe everything my eyes tell me, and not
- 40:06Speaker 1: what anybody, um, you know, not what I hear anybody
- 40:09Speaker 1: else calls me. So yeah, that's the that's the tough
- 40:13Speaker 1: thing for so many people is everything they know is
- 40:16Speaker 1: from somebody else, at least until they have ten fifteen
- 40:20Speaker 1: years of their own experience to finally start pointing back
- 40:22Speaker 1: on you know. And you know, guys, are these guys
- 40:24Speaker 1: that we got on our crew, it's it's it's funny.
- 40:27Speaker 1: And I had guys to me, you know, Um, they
- 40:30Speaker 1: look at me to be a big serious hunter, and
- 40:31Speaker 1: I want you pay so much attention to what you know,
- 40:34Speaker 1: what I'm saying, I don't. I'm not. I'm not. I'm
- 40:37Speaker 1: I'm thinking I'm not having it. Well, your little failures
- 40:40Speaker 1: or what you're doing and all little piece of information
- 40:42Speaker 1: that I can get and learn and I can maybe
- 40:43Speaker 1: tell you something, honor. Um, I'm not. You know, they
- 40:47Speaker 1: still think you can teach an old dog, you know,
- 40:48Speaker 1: new tricks, but um, my mind is just that way.
- 40:52Speaker 1: I could never ever have enough information or piece of
- 40:58Speaker 1: the puzzle, or it's it's it's my it's a blessing,
- 41:03Speaker 1: I guess, and it's a curse. I'll tell you in
- 41:05Speaker 1: so Mac every night, all my best ideas come at
- 41:08Speaker 1: three in the morning. Um, I think about him. They
- 41:12Speaker 1: topped my head and I write them down. So it's
- 41:14Speaker 1: um and a deer or two of these deer. I'm thinking.
- 41:18Speaker 1: I literally a sitting I will sit here and think
- 41:20Speaker 1: about a a deer, a fawn that's on his property,
- 41:25Speaker 1: and just imagining if that's that's the one in five
- 41:28Speaker 1: years you're gonna be here, Is you're gonna make it
- 41:31Speaker 1: the kind OF's gonna get him? You know? Is he
- 41:32Speaker 1: gonna he'll he'll leave you know at two and a
- 41:35Speaker 1: half a couple of years, will you make it back?
- 41:36Speaker 1: Somebody kill him? And all these things that just you know,
- 41:39Speaker 1: you can't get that out of your head. Uh, it's
- 41:41Speaker 1: been just a it's it's I'd like to turn it
- 41:44Speaker 1: off if I could, for at least one minute, but
- 41:48Speaker 1: I can't. I got, I got there's a lot of
- 41:51Speaker 1: people listening right now that I feel a little bit
- 41:53Speaker 1: better knowing that they're not the only one going crazy.
- 41:56Speaker 1: For white tails sitting up late at night. It's it's
- 42:00Speaker 1: a bug, that's uh, the bug you get bit by
- 42:03Speaker 1: and you can never you can never get that first
- 42:05Speaker 1: high back man. You just keep chasing it and chasing it,
- 42:07Speaker 1: and um uh it's it's it's crazy. And I've seen
- 42:11Speaker 1: some guys is crazy and crazy as me and uh
- 42:14Speaker 1: getting back that too somebody. So everybody settles into what
- 42:18Speaker 1: works for him too. So I mean there's guys that
- 42:21Speaker 1: are successful, rattling guys successful calling I come from a big,
- 42:25Speaker 1: high pressured area. Um my success came from land Low.
- 42:31Speaker 1: And even though I'd have this kast and I messed
- 42:33Speaker 1: everything up and start all up, I'm in a spot
- 42:37Speaker 1: that's virgin, that hasn't been messed up. That I read
- 42:40Speaker 1: the sign and I'm capturing that a little moment of
- 42:42Speaker 1: time where you know, I'm gonna messed it up for
- 42:44Speaker 1: everybody else in the fricking forty but I'm on the
- 42:47Speaker 1: I will be on that that deer, and I mean
- 42:49Speaker 1: it's almost it got scary. After a while. I could
- 42:52Speaker 1: walk up and down the field edge, the big field
- 42:54Speaker 1: edge hunter in the in that bigger north country years
- 42:57Speaker 1: ago over the you'd have vast um timber land bordering
- 43:05Speaker 1: up against some dairy farms, so some of them deer
- 43:07Speaker 1: would come out that we'd shine late at night and
- 43:09Speaker 1: there'd be deery. Nobody ever killed. You never see you
- 43:11Speaker 1: can want to wear the hell is that, you know,
- 43:13Speaker 1: living you never see him on poles, but that they
- 43:15Speaker 1: could be coming from five miles back in the uh
- 43:18Speaker 1: Cedar swamps and coming to the milk or clover fields,
- 43:21Speaker 1: being in the middle of night, and so I have
- 43:23Speaker 1: an opportunity to see a lot of that. But I
- 43:24Speaker 1: could walk up and down the field, read design and
- 43:26Speaker 1: almost be on a decent buck and be able to
- 43:29Speaker 1: kill it just about every second time, which you know,
- 43:34Speaker 1: I think that's some kind of knack that I got
- 43:36Speaker 1: to be able to do that. Um, I can do
- 43:38Speaker 1: it now and and and it's weird. Even good friends
- 43:43Speaker 1: he used to think that I was lying to him.
- 43:45Speaker 1: I had a buddy that filled up in Illinois once
- 43:47Speaker 1: and I said, why the hell did you shoot that buck?
- 43:49Speaker 1: There's just monsters everywhere on here. And he said, well,
- 43:52Speaker 1: this is a decent bucket. I said, well, it's really
- 43:54Speaker 1: not for here. I says, well, I lost it in
- 43:57Speaker 1: the son. So I took it down. It was a
- 43:59Speaker 1: nice bucket, so he filled up early and I felt
- 44:02Speaker 1: sorry that you just have to burn a whole week
- 44:04Speaker 1: sitting there as well. Grab the camera and you can
- 44:05Speaker 1: follow me around. Then we went and scouted four new
- 44:08Speaker 1: sits on that property. I could have shot four different
- 44:13Speaker 1: bucks over one sixty and a. Uh. The last sit
- 44:18Speaker 1: on an evening post on a pond, I could have
- 44:20Speaker 1: shot a hundred and seventy four inch nine point. It
- 44:23Speaker 1: came by us, but the pond drink came by. It
- 44:27Speaker 1: went to full drawing at you videoed and he's like,
- 44:29Speaker 1: what the frick was wrong with that? I said, there's
- 44:31Speaker 1: a twelve point typical on his property. That's what I'm
- 44:34Speaker 1: here for, and that's what I want. And I know
- 44:35Speaker 1: it was one steventy four because the neighbor shot him
- 44:37Speaker 1: shockedun season uh and it scored that. So we were
- 44:41Speaker 1: in the camp too, and I was telling a few
- 44:42Speaker 1: other guys every day. I was coming in and standing
- 44:44Speaker 1: I seen this, and I seen enough that somebody got smart,
- 44:46Speaker 1: you know, and said, yeah, right, what do you see this?
- 44:49Speaker 1: What do you see today? Uh? You know this and
- 44:51Speaker 1: that as well? No, you know, four bucks over one
- 44:54Speaker 1: fifty and uh, and and this one here and he
- 44:56Speaker 1: put you put it in the whole BCR and in
- 44:59Speaker 1: the TV. And all the guys are looking with their
- 45:00Speaker 1: jaws dropped, nobody seeing nothing. Um. But they're sitting in
- 45:05Speaker 1: a stand at maybe an outfitter put up that was
- 45:07Speaker 1: set up for the rut um. You know, all this
- 45:10Speaker 1: going on all around them, and they're they're stuck in
- 45:12Speaker 1: one spot. And I'm not like that though, And I've
- 45:15Speaker 1: been like that from a little on. You know, you
- 45:18Speaker 1: you go out of aggressive, you it's honey, hunt them down,
- 45:21Speaker 1: you know, it's not sitting there waiting from the kill
- 45:22Speaker 1: him Stoll. Yeah, I want to. I want to dissect
- 45:27Speaker 1: what you mean by hunting down like that? So can
- 45:30Speaker 1: you walk me through literally, Like, let's say you you
- 45:33Speaker 1: hunt somewhere October, first opening day, and you don't kill
- 45:37Speaker 1: your buck that night. When you say that, you're gonna
- 45:39Speaker 1: start scout like literally the next day, are you walking around?
- 45:43Speaker 1: Where do you walk around? What are you thinking about? Like?
- 45:45Speaker 1: Give me the exact details my metholical annihilation of a
- 45:49Speaker 1: property once you know, once you learn it, I do
- 45:50Speaker 1: a perimeter check, I read everything going out of there,
- 45:53Speaker 1: and then I can go in and dissect you inside
- 45:55Speaker 1: of it. I learned the property. If I already learned it,
- 45:57Speaker 1: and I have that and I'm hunting, I will be
- 46:01Speaker 1: in my post in the morning. I will sit and
- 46:03Speaker 1: and many of times I get down way too early
- 46:06Speaker 1: because I'm so anxious and wanting to go poke around
- 46:09Speaker 1: and look at look at news signs and work. I'm
- 46:12Speaker 1: back a little further so I'll be in my stand
- 46:14Speaker 1: when I get down in the morning. I'm fresh, I
- 46:17Speaker 1: haven't been sweated up, i haven't been at a restaurant.
- 46:19Speaker 1: All my clothes are clean. Everything. Now I get down
- 46:21Speaker 1: and I do some looking around, and then I picked
- 46:23Speaker 1: my next spot. I'll pick a spot maybe for a
- 46:27Speaker 1: that i'll actually hunt on a morning and evening. Um spot,
- 46:30Speaker 1: and then I'll hunt that, and I'll get down and
- 46:32Speaker 1: look around. It's a daily, daily grind. Unless you think
- 46:36Speaker 1: you got him pinned down and he's coming out of
- 46:38Speaker 1: a certain draw every day and it's a matter of
- 46:40Speaker 1: just tying into him, then you kind of leave it alone.
- 46:42Speaker 1: But you've gotta things are things change up, you know.
- 46:45Speaker 1: In October is a tough a tough time to hunt.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Things are touchy. Thence control is very, very difficult then,
- 46:52Speaker 1: and I just enjoy hunting. I'll set up on a
- 46:55Speaker 1: deer a bedded and I'll hear him coughing and hacking
- 46:58Speaker 1: in that bed, uh from us from before light. So
- 47:02Speaker 1: when I get down, and he never got up and
- 47:04Speaker 1: never moves out of it, and according to moon phase,
- 47:06Speaker 1: he probably wasn't gonna But I'm a hunter. I'm there.
- 47:10Speaker 1: You know, if a coyote bumped him, or for some
- 47:12Speaker 1: reason maybe he did decided to get up and spread
- 47:14Speaker 1: to make a move or wind change or whatever, I'm
- 47:17Speaker 1: gonna be there. I'm not just gonna not hunt it.
- 47:18Speaker 1: So um, like a wolf man, just get on it
- 47:23Speaker 1: and just keep keep on him and read the sign
- 47:25Speaker 1: and then and you'll you will be surprised. Uh, and
- 47:29Speaker 1: what you'll find when you you start poking around. The
- 47:33Speaker 1: grass sometimes is way greener on the other side of
- 47:35Speaker 1: the hill. So when you stay poking around, what do
- 47:38Speaker 1: you like? Are you just leaving your tree stand and
- 47:42Speaker 1: heading back towards the truck in their house in the
- 47:44Speaker 1: general direction and kind of looking here and there, or
- 47:46Speaker 1: are you saying, I know there's a betting year here,
- 47:49Speaker 1: I want to look at that that kind of thing. Yeah, So, um,
- 47:53Speaker 1: forget about going back. If you did go back and
- 47:54Speaker 1: get cleaned up. We do that once we find a
- 47:56Speaker 1: nice spotsile rights there. Or if you're working a buck
- 47:58Speaker 1: and you're trying to work him back, maybe he's coming
- 48:01Speaker 1: out a little too late, so you're gonna try and
- 48:02Speaker 1: get closer to bed, so you're gonna be Remember I
- 48:05Speaker 1: talked about going too far and then and then getting
- 48:08Speaker 1: a little too close. So you work your way back
- 48:10Speaker 1: in and you uh, maybe set up another stand. Then
- 48:14Speaker 1: you can go back the car, grab your stuff, read
- 48:17Speaker 1: set up that stand. Maybe climbing there in the morning,
- 48:20Speaker 1: are given an evening hunt and then and just keep
- 48:22Speaker 1: doing that. You're not going to look for a whole
- 48:25Speaker 1: another deer going to look for a whole another spots.
- 48:28Speaker 1: You're kind of year after that one deer and you're
- 48:30Speaker 1: trying to figure out on that at that time of year,
- 48:32Speaker 1: what he's gonna do, where he's gonna be, and um,
- 48:36Speaker 1: and and just keep methodically going after him, you know,
- 48:39Speaker 1: and sometimes you got the spot where you don't need
- 48:41Speaker 1: to you're you're in the right spot. It could be
- 48:43Speaker 1: a matter of time with him getting up early enough
- 48:45Speaker 1: and moving out. Perfect example that once is the last
- 48:50Speaker 1: couple of days of the week of the season. Uh,
- 48:54Speaker 1: friends of mine, I was hunting particular piece and the
- 48:56Speaker 1: sign was there, the deer, a group of bucks is
- 48:59Speaker 1: coming out awesome bottoms through this farm. Miland I had
- 49:03Speaker 1: onto the golf course and their tracks were there every day,
- 49:06Speaker 1: fresh coming through there, every day coming through a fresh
- 49:08Speaker 1: And then he's like, what are you gonna do a
- 49:10Speaker 1: burnier the rest of your week? Um, I got the
- 49:13Speaker 1: best because the deer I want coming through here. I
- 49:15Speaker 1: got a week left. What am I gonna go look
- 49:17Speaker 1: for some other freaking deer in five days? And I
- 49:20Speaker 1: held it out and held it out, and I killed
- 49:22Speaker 1: one day for who knows our reasons. So people might
- 49:24Speaker 1: have bumped them or whatever the hell. The deal was.
- 49:27Speaker 1: They got up and they moved early and came through
- 49:28Speaker 1: and I think that one was one sixty seven. It
- 49:32Speaker 1: was a It was a nice bucket. I held him
- 49:34Speaker 1: my hold to my my gun. So, um man, when
- 49:40Speaker 1: you when you talk about, you know, moving in on
- 49:43Speaker 1: this buck, you where he's not moving yet during daylight
- 49:46Speaker 1: or not where you're at, so you're pushing a little farther.
- 49:49Speaker 1: What is the sign that you're seeing that, Like, what's
- 49:53Speaker 1: the threshold of sign that you have to pass to
- 49:55Speaker 1: be okay, I need to set up here. Is it
- 49:57Speaker 1: the first good rub or you have to have a
- 50:00Speaker 1: a ton of fresh rubs? Like what makes you stop?
- 50:03Speaker 1: So you'll see something? You'll go and you know there'll
- 50:06Speaker 1: be mediocre signing around there, and all of a sudden
- 50:08Speaker 1: you're you know you're you're getting in there and poke
- 50:10Speaker 1: around and um, like last year there was a huge fresh,
- 50:15Speaker 1: ripped up rubs already marketing deer markets territory. Often I uh,
- 50:20Speaker 1: it was a buck that I didn't want to chase.
- 50:22Speaker 1: But in science hindsight, the one I was after, I
- 50:24Speaker 1: might have been running that same circuit when I dove
- 50:26Speaker 1: in a little deeper. Um, I think it was a
- 50:29Speaker 1: week later. I wish I would have dolved in a
- 50:32Speaker 1: little deeper the first time I seen those rubs, because
- 50:35Speaker 1: there was a rub line to this property, dude, besides
- 50:37Speaker 1: your waist chest, that they had this empire interior just
- 50:42Speaker 1: through all this uh major parts think just ripped ahead.
- 50:47Speaker 1: I would I would have probably liked the gut on
- 50:48Speaker 1: that a little earlier than I did. Um. Look, there's
- 50:52Speaker 1: the kind of thing that if you sat on the
- 50:54Speaker 1: field edge you know, and that's going on like a
- 50:56Speaker 1: hundred and fifty yards in September, and you're sitting in
- 50:59Speaker 1: there not do anything. Come out every night, and that
- 51:01Speaker 1: deer's in there rubbing things and hanging back or doing
- 51:03Speaker 1: whatever hell he's doing there. You know. So um, I'm
- 51:07Speaker 1: telling you, you you get you look around, you're gonna see it.
- 51:09Speaker 1: You look and you will find they are where they are.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Just like fishing, I mean, what do you do? Just
- 51:15Speaker 1: go beat the freaking water to a throp or start
- 51:19Speaker 1: pumping shot into the fields hoping to hit a pheasant. Um,
- 51:22Speaker 1: take a man, go find a fish, you know, pattern
- 51:24Speaker 1: them and go after him, you know, and if they
- 51:26Speaker 1: ain't biting, make them bite. Okay, mean so yeah, you
- 51:34Speaker 1: I'm trying to think about the right way. I wanna
- 51:36Speaker 1: I wanna process a perfect example how how aggressive a
- 51:39Speaker 1: guy could get. So back in the day with everybody
- 51:42Speaker 1: and your brother baiting everybody thought the big deer nocturnal,
- 51:46Speaker 1: they don't come in. They don't come in because you're
- 51:47Speaker 1: you're hunting over your bait. You're shooting everything that comes
- 51:49Speaker 1: in there. I could literally go on a property. I
- 51:53Speaker 1: can run the whole property, kick every freaking deer up
- 51:55Speaker 1: on the property and go jump in the bait that
- 51:57Speaker 1: deer was using in almost ninety per cent of time
- 52:00Speaker 1: that deer would come in before dark. He got up
- 52:03Speaker 1: off his ass, and he moved through his normal pattern
- 52:06Speaker 1: circuit um. I'm doing one man drives on big deer.
- 52:10Speaker 1: I'm loading up with lots I'm doing. I'm doing some
- 52:12Speaker 1: aggressive stuff that you know, in the hands of the
- 52:15Speaker 1: wrong guy might you know, it might not work from
- 52:18Speaker 1: But I've showed a few other guys to do this
- 52:20Speaker 1: and they're, uh, don't be doing it while I'm on
- 52:23Speaker 1: the same piece of property you're at. You know, I
- 52:24Speaker 1: don't want to be the one freaking everything up and
- 52:26Speaker 1: they capitalize on it. But yeah, yes, you know, I
- 52:31Speaker 1: know a big part of of you know, dialing in
- 52:35Speaker 1: these deer is figuring out where they're betting. What are
- 52:38Speaker 1: you doing? Like, what's the next step to try to
- 52:41Speaker 1: dial in exactly where they're betting, Because you know, I
- 52:43Speaker 1: think a lot of hunters have a situation like this
- 52:45Speaker 1: where they think, I think this buck is betting in
- 52:48Speaker 1: this swamp somewhere. There's like a five acre air he's somewhere,
- 52:51Speaker 1: and I'm pretty sure he's betting in there. But I
- 52:53Speaker 1: think with you you go more detail than that, right, Well,
- 52:57Speaker 1: I do and I don't. So we have spots on
- 52:59Speaker 1: here where there's uh and and I went and I
- 53:02Speaker 1: walked at um walked at the shut hunting this year,
- 53:06Speaker 1: Um that these bucks come out of this draw there.
- 53:09Speaker 1: We know they're better just inside there, because that's I'll
- 53:12Speaker 1: get up and they'll they'll come out. We didn't need
- 53:13Speaker 1: to go in there and bump modity or know that,
- 53:15Speaker 1: but we know that from experience. But now when I
- 53:18Speaker 1: walked in there, actually for the first time I looked around,
- 53:20Speaker 1: it's like, even if you wanted to go in there,
- 53:22Speaker 1: these things are like freaking goats on the side of
- 53:24Speaker 1: freaking cliffs and uh rock croppings that you're probably not
- 53:28Speaker 1: gonna kill that buck right in that bed, but you
- 53:31Speaker 1: can kill him in the corridor. And that's what my son,
- 53:33Speaker 1: I think, like to do. He likes to get the
- 53:34Speaker 1: corridors coming in and out of that uh uh that
- 53:38Speaker 1: betting area where um again, I need that piece of information.
- 53:42Speaker 1: It's like in my mind, if I see exactly where
- 53:44Speaker 1: that buck is betting, and we had a piece um
- 53:48Speaker 1: in Wisconsin that there was there's three betting areas on
- 53:51Speaker 1: this property. One right behind the kennels, a guy had
- 53:56Speaker 1: a like ten dogs in there, and all the big
- 53:59Speaker 1: bucks are better right up against his farmhouse right back
- 54:01Speaker 1: at the kennels. There was one in the uh, the
- 54:06Speaker 1: middle of the swamp that I could go off right
- 54:08Speaker 1: in there any day, walk right for that tree and
- 54:10Speaker 1: knocked that big bastard in off there. Um. And then
- 54:13Speaker 1: it was the third one was kind of more open
- 54:15Speaker 1: on hedgerows where you can see a long way coming.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Those big bucks on that property are going to be
- 54:20Speaker 1: in one of those, just from years experience. During one
- 54:23Speaker 1: of those, when the weekend come around and there's another
- 54:26Speaker 1: ten guys hunting the property, all of the bucks will
- 54:28Speaker 1: just run right up against that freaking uh that kennel
- 54:31Speaker 1: and sit till freaking pitch dark. And you know who
- 54:33Speaker 1: was sitting off at that kennel with about forty yards
- 54:36Speaker 1: and watching him get up when the dogs started freaking
- 54:38Speaker 1: barking at how? It was me? And at one time
- 54:41Speaker 1: I screwed up and learned I ended up actually dragging
- 54:44Speaker 1: a deer out of there, and somebody wanted the guys
- 54:46Speaker 1: followed that drag back and started nosing around here. Had
- 54:49Speaker 1: I had to back off a little bit, so he
- 54:51Speaker 1: wouldn't find that that sweet spot. But um, those deer,
- 54:55Speaker 1: you know, they get accustomed to whatever the pressure is.
- 54:58Speaker 1: And then um and I would so a little snaker.
- 55:01Speaker 1: I would get there and do my scouting on hunting
- 55:02Speaker 1: on a Thursday a couple of days before, and then
- 55:05Speaker 1: I let those guys have all the scraps for the
- 55:07Speaker 1: weekend once once I got had my way with it.
- 55:10Speaker 1: So there's a lot of different things you can do. Um,
- 55:15Speaker 1: but you learn that stuff, and once you learn it,
- 55:16Speaker 1: you don't I don't have to go there again. I
- 55:18Speaker 1: could set up on you know, betting area be you
- 55:22Speaker 1: know or um, you know when they pushed them up
- 55:25Speaker 1: against the channels. Now there's nobody on the property and
- 55:27Speaker 1: you're down maybe in that swamp or hanging down there,
- 55:29Speaker 1: then they gotta go set up on a spot that's
- 55:31Speaker 1: coming off there. So there's there's some things that other
- 55:35Speaker 1: hunters out there that focus on. Betting area is a
- 55:38Speaker 1: lot like to point to to help people like identify
- 55:41Speaker 1: this is a buck betting area, this is a doughe
- 55:43Speaker 1: betting area. Um, when you're out there, what are the
- 55:46Speaker 1: things that help you differentiate? Is it simply a big
- 55:50Speaker 1: rub and a big bed, or what is it that
- 55:52Speaker 1: tells you, okay, this is a buck betting area, a
- 55:55Speaker 1: big and I don't I hate that terminology buck betting
- 55:58Speaker 1: area that just a million times a buck's betting areas
- 56:02Speaker 1: where it's betting. It's going to be that new button monitor.
- 56:04Speaker 1: It could be in my woods here. Um, during late season,
- 56:07Speaker 1: it's in the middle of an open hardwoods during gun season,
- 56:10Speaker 1: big huge bucks. I can look at right off my
- 56:12Speaker 1: my porch at a big draw that's there, and I'll
- 56:14Speaker 1: watch these slobs just come right up in there in bed.
- 56:16Speaker 1: They're safe from all the gun hunters. Um. It is
- 56:19Speaker 1: where it is now. There's areas that once you find them,
- 56:24Speaker 1: even if a deer is killed, it seems like the bigger,
- 56:26Speaker 1: more mature deer they're they're there for a reason. Okay.
- 56:29Speaker 1: So where it drives you not to try and think
- 56:32Speaker 1: of why it is? Forget about why it is? Why
- 56:35Speaker 1: is it every time I walk for this draw, I
- 56:37Speaker 1: jump a huge buck. I mean a guy, you know
- 56:39Speaker 1: you do it two or three times, four times? You
- 56:41Speaker 1: know at some point in time you gotta get in
- 56:44Speaker 1: your brain. Now, I don't to hunt this spot here
- 56:45Speaker 1: can deer's always here, you know. Uh. And when you
- 56:48Speaker 1: find those spots their gold, then you don't have to
- 56:51Speaker 1: be Then you can set up on him, stay out
- 56:53Speaker 1: of there and evening hunt, slide in there for only
- 56:55Speaker 1: morning hunts and the winds right and you think that's
- 56:57Speaker 1: gonna be a good And you got a awesome and
- 57:01Speaker 1: I got a bunch of spots like that. You've got
- 57:02Speaker 1: awesome spots to hunt all the time, you know. Um. Yeah,
- 57:08Speaker 1: So going back to your your your betting area. If
- 57:11Speaker 1: you've got a buck that you know is betting in
- 57:12Speaker 1: like a five acre piece of that swamp, learn where
- 57:16Speaker 1: he's coming and out of here. Go look at the tracks.
- 57:18Speaker 1: He leaves big tracks behind, you know uh. And and
- 57:21Speaker 1: to identify a box bed, obviously a buck is a
- 57:24Speaker 1: big animal, leaves a big track, It leaves a big
- 57:27Speaker 1: freaking turn behind and uh leaves a little sign of
- 57:30Speaker 1: aggression and stick your freaking nose in one. If you
- 57:32Speaker 1: want to smell a buck bed, they smell like get
- 57:35Speaker 1: um and does smell sweet. Same thing with the urine,
- 57:38Speaker 1: I mean, if he's step pissing the freaking on the grass,
- 57:40Speaker 1: take a whiff of it. You can tell a buck
- 57:42Speaker 1: from a doll um. Yeah, yeah, I'm being serious that
- 57:47Speaker 1: the dose well sweet, I could smell a freaking rutting
- 57:51Speaker 1: buck from from a hunter yards away many And here's
- 57:54Speaker 1: another thing that's funny. I I got two huge nose
- 57:57Speaker 1: in my face, right, you know what it works? It's
- 58:00Speaker 1: I joke about it. But I have a more sensitive
- 58:06Speaker 1: smelling capability. I think that most people do. And my
- 58:10Speaker 1: wife's like, why don't you you know you don't have
- 58:13Speaker 1: that shirt's not dirty? You know, um, you don't need
- 58:15Speaker 1: to wash it again. If if there's a shirt in
- 58:18Speaker 1: my closet that's was not washed, I could sniff that
- 58:21Speaker 1: some of uch. Honestly, as soon as I opened that
- 58:23Speaker 1: tricking deal. And when I'm walking through the woods, I
- 58:26Speaker 1: get senses of so if you can picture what a
- 58:31Speaker 1: deer would to do it as nose, it's almost like
- 58:34Speaker 1: walking into a fricking brick wall. That's how That's how
- 58:37Speaker 1: good they can smell. Um. And you've got to get
- 58:40Speaker 1: that in your head, um and learn that and then
- 58:43Speaker 1: that that will help you a long ways. And this
- 58:45Speaker 1: just chasing around, chasing around his white filter, that's a
- 58:48Speaker 1: that's a major major um thing with his gears. That
- 58:52Speaker 1: they're using them that nose their advantage all the time,
- 58:55Speaker 1: and um when I learned to use it myself in
- 59:00Speaker 1: my advantage. So so you you come on a buck
- 59:04Speaker 1: or you come on a bed, and you you look
- 59:06Speaker 1: at it. You see it's a big impression on the ground.
- 59:10Speaker 1: You see there's some big turds. You take a whiff.
- 59:12Speaker 1: It's got that bucky smell. What else do you do?
- 59:15Speaker 1: I don't need to take the whip I got. I could,
- 59:16Speaker 1: I could, I could see it's a bus bed already.
- 59:18Speaker 1: So so that's the right now. I was just so
- 59:21Speaker 1: we couldn't run him in a roald here we run
- 59:24Speaker 1: to get inventory and stuff, and they're not hitting him
- 59:28Speaker 1: this year for is good. And I'm telling my my buddy,
- 59:31Speaker 1: I says, We've got this huge, huge buck bed right
- 59:34Speaker 1: on the edge of the bean field in the grass,
- 59:36Speaker 1: not even going back in Teptember, and he ain't a
- 59:39Speaker 1: hundred yards from you know, your mineral and your corn
- 59:42Speaker 1: filery to get a picture of him, and he's not
- 59:44Speaker 1: even going over and not acknowledging it. So do you
- 59:46Speaker 1: want to get a picture of him, You got to
- 59:47Speaker 1: take your camera and go slide over to where where
- 59:49Speaker 1: he's better, or where he's feeding them beans. You gotta
- 59:52Speaker 1: start changing up and moving around, you know, you gotta
- 59:54Speaker 1: read that. So if a guy is accustomed to doing
- 59:56Speaker 1: this scenario, the fine inmentory every year this periodes death
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: not a failure because they're not for some reason going
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: to them. I got a theory of why they're not
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: this year, but um, I don't know if it's right
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: or not. But um, well, we got extremely um high
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: amount of coons again this year, and it seems like
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: every time, and I know they don't they don't really
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: bother them. I've actually seen big light they'll kill raccoons
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: that come to Bates late season and stuff. But I
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: think with all that chaos and all that pistons ship
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: on there and there's so much food from now, they
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: don't need to be visiting that they you know that
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: they're seeing everything going to that mineral from where he's
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: better right now. He's not that far away on the
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: edge of the field. So um, it could have something
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: to do with that, or maybe this year they don't
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: need to the minerals as much as they normally does.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: So those things that I would love to know the
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: answer to that, but I don't but I I think
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I know enough about the outskirts around it too to
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: help me in my endeavors. Here so interesting dialing back
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: on the bed situation, like what if it's in season,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: you find a bed, think it's a buck? Are you
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: like some guys will sit in it and think through
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: where am I to hang a stand right here? I
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: think I've heard you say that on one of the
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: old videos out there, like what are the things you're
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: breaking down at that point? Is it? Okay? So at
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: that time of year, I'm not really um looking for
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: a bed per se that there's not a deer in it.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: I'll be going and if I bump a deer out
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: of that bed, I'm looking for the spot. I don't
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: know what bucks, and at that it might be a
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: pound white till um. So I'm not like a lot
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: of these guys I guess looking for uh if if
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: you're asking me for guys coming up in the state
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: that they're in, I'm getting to give a bunch of
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: different answers of what they should be doing versus somebody
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: who's onto where the deer's already betted or onto this buck.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Um um. I'm not out looking for new you know
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: new new buck. There's a new spots already know where
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: the bucks better than I'm I'm going after him, you know.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: So I'm kind of curious about both. Yeah, so both
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: as far as on. So if you want to if
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: you were going to find uh a buck's bed, then
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: you think you just bumped them out of there, or
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: you just think you're wander around and you came upon one.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: You know, you know where one's at. Yeah, I'm wondering. Yeah,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: you know, most guys have the tools. I would think
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: to see where that beds that look at the lay
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: of the land and check out the wind and then
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: figure out a spot to set a stand for when
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: he's coming back. Correct. Okay, So so's what you might
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: do is you might spend all the time and effort
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: and do that, and you might end up with a
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: buck that you don't want. Same with scrapes. You know,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: I could sit there's so many scrapes on. I can
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: sit scrapes all day long. But what if the beard
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: that you're after is not working at scrape? You want
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: to go waste the day sitting on a scrape that's
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: got maybe four one towards coming through that are working
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: at that you know your bucks not even he's on that.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: So um, I guess I'm in a different state than
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: we're where. I gotta know, like I said, I gotta
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: have all the piece of information. I don't like to
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: douche it wind um. And even these stands we've got,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: we've got phenomenal stands that are just they're in right
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: spots and they'll light up for short and time or
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: they'll be great. I cannot stand just going and jumping
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: in one of those without looking at the sign there first.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: I'll be up in that tree and I'll be just
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: like thinking to myself, is it not even hot here yet?
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Or it's you know, I mean it just it just
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: drives me a while. I gotta go there and literally
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: physically check the trails again and almost like checking traps um.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: And there's spots too that I have. I'm like that too.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I'll go and I'll they get I'll check a primary
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: scrape and I'll watch you. I'll get nicked up a
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: little bit. They're gonna be some branches tooot up a
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: little bit, and then I'll check it like four days later,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: and then the little knick ups a little more addressed
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: of and then all of a sudden, I'll check it,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: you know, a couple of days later, and some branches
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: are broken off, and I'll come here one day in
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: the sun of a bitch is just demolished. And then
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: I learned on that spot because I was I would
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: hunt that that area and I would not see ship
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: until that tree got demolished. Then I learn it over
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: the years, right, I dive in there and then big
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: that big sun a bit should be up running, you know,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: daylight hours, just aggressive as hell, and it was the
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: timing was right time to do it, you know. Uh.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Over the years, I got a little more advanced. For
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: now I could go sneak up to where he was
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: held up. I call it a staging area um where
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: that deer will hang out. He might get up before dark,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: but that was just they'll just hang out there and
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: no spots you can find um us in grassy marshal areas.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: There'll be some worn out dead grass there. You can
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: almost see like where two bucks might be sparring there,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: and they'll get up out of your beds and they'll
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: stay there untill pitch dark and then move out. You know,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: if there's too much pressure, if you're on public or whatever. So,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: like I said, over time and over the years, as
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: you you absorb all that stuff, you can. Um, it's
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: just reads like it's almost written written on a sign
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: there to me and and and some guys will just
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: not not see it. I got some pretty advanced on
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: her stood that I try and teach win the thermal stool,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: and they just just don't freaking get it, and they
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: probably never will. I'm just for your say. So, UM,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: I know that back in the day, when it came
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: to using trail cameras, you would just focused on using
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: them for inventory during the summer. But I think you're
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: using them more now recently, is that right? Like, how
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: are you using cameras in season to help you fine
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: tune this scouting portion to dial in? So you know
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: that that scrape isn't just a couple and forties, it's
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: it's the buck, right, It's I gotta say, I got
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: I got a trail camera, soulf Um. It kind of
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: is a really unfair advantage, Okay. So I explained the
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: guys that years ago, everybody be in church, I'd be
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: freaking in a swamp before the season up to my
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: chest literally glassing huge Marsha's for a week before the season. Man, nobody,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: you know, nobody did that. Nobody had to wear it
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: all or the gump to do it. Now, a guy
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: could go slap a camera and do all what I
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: did all weeks of work and have it in in
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: two minutes. Okay, so again it's a two I use it.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: It's it's it's it's a value boot tool. Um. But
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: I got so frustrated with him that I just got
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: piste off that us, Like why am I going through
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: all this work and you know, half these cameras are
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: scared and dear, I can't see what the hell is
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: in the picture, And I'm like freaking, I wouldn't spend
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: a lot of money to do a camera because I
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: got I got sick of wasted my time with him. Um,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: there was a deer on this property had the biggest
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: white til track I've privacy seen and never got a
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: glimpse of them, and and it was in the snow.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: It was a scrape, and I had set a camera.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: I've seen that track going through there, and I finally
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: I went up and I've seen the track with through
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: and I got I got this, I'm gonna see what
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: the friakest thing has got in his head? Finally, you know,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: I think I got from the neck down. I got
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: so freaking hot. I took that camera and just ripe
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: pull it at the freaking blew in a million pieces,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: and I'm like, I'm done with this ship. I don't
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: know if the stick behind it sag or whatever the
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: hell it was that I thought, I can't take it anymore.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: You know, this is painful. So um, if I'm going
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: to use a piece of equipment, I wanted to work right,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: so um. But yeah, so it's a it's a great tool,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: but uh, you gotta be careful because um, you know,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: especially with a lot of cells and all that, you
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: can get too much in there, too much human intervention,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: especially during the season. A deer and velvet as a
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: different animal than a deer and hard horn. Um. A
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: deer on a on a on a mineral or a
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: bait site is a different animal than one that's kind
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: of back in a wild and back in the game.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Sol Um, you don't want to Oh, the one kid
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: was set in his camera and and I think another
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: guy was an interest that came and hunt your property
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: more because this kid's up and down, checking his camera
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: every freaking day up and now on the whole I mean,
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: you're just you're leaving your scent in, You're you're you
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: know the deer pattern. You know, you gotta be smart
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: about it, and I'll put it on maybe, uh, plot watcher,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: get way back and watch the whole thing and stay
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: away from that intimate spot that you need to do
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: your ambush and know also, um, but I think it's
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: a valuable tool. It really is. And it's like I said,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: it's it's it's as uh, it's as valuable as as
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: their standing beans late season. I mean they're both you know,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: criminally freaking great to use, and um, they give you
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: an advantage. Not that the daring got the big advantage
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: over here to start with, right, Yes, they have got
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: the thing that the leg up on us in most cases.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: But with these cameras, do you kind of sent them
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: in some low impact places and let them just be
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: there all year, or do you move them throughout the
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: season and get zeroed in closer and closer to where
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: you think a buck is and kind of close in
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: on a buck in a way. So we said them
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: on a lot of scrapes now during during the season.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: And then areas where the scrapes have from a distance
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: kind of away where deerill funnel through. Um, so if
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: something comes through there, even you get anything that hits
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: the scrape and you get a whole area of deer
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: moving through that area. I used them all last year.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: It did not have any problems. You can watch my show.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: It just aired the other day, and I think they'll
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: show you some video of whitetail on these scrapes during
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: the season that are phenomenal. Cody literally he used cameras
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: to chase the big buck down last year and he didn't.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: He didn't get the deer, but dude, he got onto
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: it or close to it like seven different times, which
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: I don't even know if I'm good enough to get
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: onto a big deer that many times. Normally I'm like,
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: if I'm pushing up, I got an opportunity or or
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: close the third time to figure something out and beat there.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I'm I'm lucky as hell. So um And he even
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: actually said the deer that I shot he had on
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: camera said before I saw said that I think that
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: damn deer left the side of the the road. Now he's
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: on he's on the other side in that morning, I
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: see I think you're right. I think he went on
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: my side road and he came through the drawers and
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: he's done. So look, but we got some things we
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: did do that these who walks, you're gonna see world
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: class deer looking into that camera and not even you
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: know they know something's there. I mean I kind of hide. Um,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: but it's it's not bothering them. Um, and it's it's
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: a pretty pretty good deal to be able to have
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: that where a lot of the other ones I had
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: to look at that thing and run people on video mode.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: You can watch them with their asses in the air,
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: in their tails is freaking hidden to the to the hill.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: So um, you just gotta be careful. You know what
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: it is? Common sense? You know, a guy start using
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: a little more. Um. My teacher told me you're not
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: the brightest stuff, Bulgary says. But I think someone puts
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: you in line ten different times for common sense. You've
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: got more common sense in this whole class combined. So um.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: And I don't know if that's again just the way
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: my mind works in that area. Um, but get me
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: to spell something or a dual arithmetic. I'm I'm just
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: kind of lost brother. We've all got our things. Um,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: so here's what I'm still one of the things I
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: keep on wondering about. You've got You've got these cameras
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: on scrapes. You are out there poking around, scouting sometimes daily.
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: It sounds like going out there looking, searching, moving in.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: How do you do that in not push that deer
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: to be more nocturnal, or how do you not push
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: that deer to be doing a different thing tomorrow because
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: you walk through today at that time of that year.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you right now, they don't give a
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: ship if you're a human. What's going on that deer?
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Um a lot of times does not give a ship.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: But you're doing what your he's concentrated on dolls, going
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: on the heat and following them. And when you when
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: you read that sign that that happens when um, when
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: all of a sudden, uh, you'll have a trail coming
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: up across the ridge or something and it's got huge, polished,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: freaking red, hot, freaking rubs. That's a dog going on
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: the heat and she's got four days before she'll be bread.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: When you see that sign, you get on that and
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: you get on it right away and that dear don't
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: give a ship even if you're there, he's gonna still
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: go up that dropt all that does no matter what,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Like I told you, if I could have, if I
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: could have ranged or knew the range that was at
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: our had ability to shoot that deer. I think that
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: there was a forty five yards that deer was standing
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: in open fields staring at me, and I was watching
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: that doll right on the edge of the woods standing there.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: He wasn't leaving that doll side. He didn't give a shift.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: I was standing there staring at him. If I could
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: have took a pulp and hit that there, I could
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: killed him off the ground probably, But um, that's the
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: killable deer. That deer earlier in the year. Man, you
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: got a tip toe around or you know, make sure
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: you don't get too aggressive in this spot and that
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: stuff that he's playing the game. He knows gen areas
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: doesn't run circles around this though. Yeah, it was a
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: winning rome. You know, take that season. You know you
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: kinda don't bust in like a freaking bull or trying
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: to cabin start what you can stay for distance field
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: edge hunt. Look, you know then as it gets an October,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: it gets tougher. The only time. And I've had a
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: whole season where I talked to guys that were did
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: other shows. All their guys were not seeing ship. It
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: went dead in October big time that year. And I
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: was seeing freaking nice, mature deer every freaking day. The
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: difference was I was shrick and crawling right up their
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: asses and right in the beds with them, and they
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: weren't going out of the bedding areas. They would get
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: up mid twenty yards around a little bit, eat a
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: little bit, PLoP back down. They were stand put there
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: And if you weren't there, you could be forty fifty
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: yards away and you were out of the game. Man.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: And those guys are all hunting, you know, probably there
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: are normal spots or funnels or whatever, and they didn't
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: miss the whole boat, you know. So so you're you're
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: taking a little bit easier in the early season. But
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: once you're getting some point oc told where you start
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: pushing in those betting areas. I think I saw somewhere
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: that well, isn't it kind of like when you can
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: get aggressive is when that gets towards that that's a
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: little pre rug when them, those are, you know, getting
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: close to coming in and then there's competition. Um man,
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: I had deer that would get done one of me
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: and smell me and just beat the frick out of
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: a tree that knew it was me after them, and
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: just send them a sign like you know, you're in
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: my house now, you know. And and I guess maybe
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: a lot of guys aren't experienced that because you're not hunting.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Maybe that caliber or that dominant deer in here, I don't,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: I don't know. You know, you're um if you're just
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: sitting in the woods hoping at a bucket come by,
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: I mean I would think they'd be pretty easy to
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: capitalize on that, you know. Yeah, So so what about
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: like you're doing this, you're aggressively pushing in there finding him.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Do you ever is there ever situation where you say, oh,
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: you know what, I gotta back out of here and
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: give it time, or no, it's time to give up
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: on this deer or do you just search and search, pushing,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: push and push. I never give up on the deer. Um.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: And again, you know, with my mentality, I don't I'll
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: bump a deer. I don't mind bumping a deer. I
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: think I learned that too from a property I had
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: that was so overrun with deer you could not get
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: to your stand or walk anywhere without jumping deer. Um,
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: go to your scouting spot, don't worry about everything else
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: around you, concentrate on you know, the job at hand.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: Go after that deer and be concerned about that and
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: not like everything else. Um. Now, obviously you don't want
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: to be running through your entire property with a bike
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: and blowing everything out everywhere and just getting um um
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: everything chaotic. Then you know, then you got a bunch
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: of eyes and ears. Uh so on the ambush, you know,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: the weigh in the way out. Once you pick your spot,
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: get in there, hunted, and get out and you'll define.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Just think about how many I said done another I
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: think a little podcast about guys. Think of how many
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: trees that dead deer goes by and on a daily
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: basis that you could have a tree standing and and
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: and I think to myself, you can't pick one of them.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: That all those woods out there, there's something freaking wrong. Um,
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: you might be on the right tree, but the deer
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: might be coming an hour after dark. About going by
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: that one or um, you know what I mean, it's
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: or maybe you fiddling around your stand freaking you know,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: texting or whatever the hell you're doing a deer spot,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: you know, glare your noise or um. I did do
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: a check up on a buddy ones, but I put
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: him in on a spot that was stole red hot.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: He just wanted to fill a dough teg and he
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: he wasn't seeing a dear I should there's absolutely a layer.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: I said, There's no way you cannot see a deer
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: in here. There's thunders of them. You're sitting on a
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: freaking bait. Um. So I went and glass this guy
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: from from a distance away. I'm like, get the standing up,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: turn around, looking around. I mean, look a freak are you?
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: And then so I'm watching him. I'm doing that right
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: then I'm watching way out in the march, a whole
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: group of goose all standing there like me, watching him
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: doing the same ship. And I'm like, son, I'm a
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: bit this is this is a comical. Somebody should have
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: this on video. You know, it's funny though, but I
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: mean it's sad, but it's funny. So is that what's
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: going on in the in the guy's woods. I don't know,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: but look at some of these other guys. Look at
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: the talent that's out there now that I've learned, um,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: and I've seen these guys grow and man, they're killing
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: freaking machines. Now they've they've all of a sudden that
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I don't know what it is. What is that you
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: asked me about? That aha moment when that lightbulb comes
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: off that and I can't put my finger on it,
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: but it's uh, um, Apparently the light bulb goes off
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: for a lot of guys. And once they figure it
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: out there, you know they're getting it done. And and
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: here's another thing. So we got this new page two,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: and I'm really worried about what's great as all of
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: these guys are opening up, the new guys coming up,
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: and the last thing I want. I mean, it is
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: intimidating to be around the guy shooting the calibrator. They're
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: killing consistently. None of them guys started off killing Big Garrett.
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: They were all freaking right where everybody is starting out today.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: And I would think that somebody and I know what
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: I was talking that and shows and my generations, who
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: I don't think we're that smart of a generation to
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: tell your truth. And I always like gave a little
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: stab at the next generation. They're kind of post season there,
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: you know, but they're pretty educated, smart freaking kids, and
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: that when I when I talked to that shows a
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: lot of these guys had come and sense and they
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: got it. And years ago I talked to guys the
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: same way and they just wouldn't get it. So I
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: think there's they got what it takes. Maybe they learned
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: a little bit of tip pure and there, and then
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: they perfect that, uh their style to their own. And
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: they're saying, man, if somebody's you know, somebody's slaying big
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: so um. You know, it's it's funny you you mentioned that,
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: and and I was kind of thinking about this myself,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: trying to think about, you know, what I've seen and
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: heard about you doing, and then what I've seen and
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: heard about other guys doing that that have hunted with
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: you or learned from you, and trying to figure out
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: what's one of the what are the consistent things here?
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: And one of the things I think maybe underlies everything
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: is something you mentioned just a little while ago, which
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: is getting rid of that feel of fear of failure.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: Once you get past that worry about Oh I'm unscrewed up,
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: and you just start going for it. That seems to
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: be something that you've got. And Justin Hollinsworth God, and
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Adam Hayes has got and whoever um that can more
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: a more Mason cold type of hunter. He's a strategic,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: sit back and watch tool. He'll he'll do a little
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: more observing. He's a he's a different type of guy.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: But don't don't get me wrong. When he sees he
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: sees the opportunity, he gets right in there and gets
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: it done. But um, so that's a different style. And
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Justin again, he's he's kind of been like right right
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: to me. He's he he's as aggressive as he get
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: now too. Um But yeah, everybody gets in that little
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: um minds are a little niche and takes that. I'm
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: gonna tell you that. The big thing though, what all
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: of these guys got in in common. There's nobody anymore
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: parks their ass in a stand for the entire season
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: and just worries about over hunting it and not hunting it.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: These guys get their equipment and they go after it.
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: And like I said, if if you've seen what I've seen,
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: where you couldn't burn a white tail out of his
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: habitat That's all you're doing is messing that thing up
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: for day. And now you messed that spot up in
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: that area. So back up a little bit. Um. You'll
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: see a video that I had one one May that
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: I I shot and actually hit a deer. Um. And
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: because of the time of the year was I know
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: he'd be coming through working in scrapes. Again, I changed
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: my stand up literally not more than twenty five yards.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: That's some of us. Came through again, looked up in
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: that stand nobody's there, came through again, and I just
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: killed a bastard. Um, he does you know what I mean,
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: He's gonna do what he's doing. I know what he's doing. Um,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: I'm not going away. Um. So yeah, I think uh
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: the aggression. Like I said, I think my son's got
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: that tim fold, he's he's got even a little more so.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: And some of these other guys that you said justin
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: and through the just watch all these addiction shows watching
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: some of these guys, do look at heath talk about
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: a stealthy, freaking move, slipping in the back door man
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: checking it out and setting up just that is what
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I call is surgically removed the white tail from the
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: face of the earth man. It was all nothing left
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: about it. Everything skill a hunter going with his tools
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: and equipment and and and taking down a pretty impressive,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: pretty smart animals too. I would think, you know, yeah, yeah,
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: that was a slick move when he put when I
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: think you're talking about when he went in times when
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: he thought that buck was going to leave his bed
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: in the afternoon and then snuck in there behind him.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: That was that was impressive. Um. If we're talking about
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: this aggressive stuff, though, we have to get into the
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: details of what a lot of people think of as
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: the most aggressive tactic, which you've I think popular eyes
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: and people kind of look to you as the one
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: who kind of first started doing this thing, which of
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: course is the bumping dump. Um, you've talked about bumping
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: a buck. We've talked about a couple different things that
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: you're thinking about when you bump a buck. But tell
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: me about the situation where you bump him and then
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: you're saying, all right, now I'm gonna set up to
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: to hunt him. How do you pull off the dump
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: part after the bumping? Okay, So I don't think it
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: sounds like an aggressive move, But to scout out an
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: area and jump with your out his bed, I don't
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: think that's a real really aggressive on that on that
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: on anyhow, So I'll just put that out there. So, Um,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: that deer got bumped out of there. I almost think
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: that I mentioned this before that it almost shows up
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: that that deer got bumped, he got out of there
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: without getting um, you know, hurt or taken, and he's
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: it shows up that that that piece that he has
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: figured out her bed works for him. So the deer
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: feels better about that bed now because it just proved
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: to him that the dude, the reason those deer are
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: where they are is because you cannot get the one
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: up them. And I'm not talking to you as a person.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: I'm talking about um. Perfect example. There's you can watch
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: the firebuck should where dogs literally farm dogs all running
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: deer all over there all the time. Ran that buck
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: out of that bed and that's not a bit. Came
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: right back to that same bed the next day to
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: bed nett Okay, Um, if that was a person to
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: be the same ship, you bumped me out of my bed,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: I got away, I'm coming back. This is a perfect
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: spot for me. Who knows. Maybe those those dogs are
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: chasing that deer for three days in a row, and
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: he's and he's he sees them coming before they see
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: where he's at. They dumped down a little bit low
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: out of his sight. He bugs out of there, and
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: then they chase the round some more. But it's a um.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: It's a great spot. It works for a deer, and
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: I think that's why those big deer are there. Now
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: Here's where it comes h There are beds that are
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: good on knobs for all different wind directions where a
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: deer can enter um and set up, and there are
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: other spots that are only good for certain win directions.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: So if you're gonna do a bump and do the
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: dump the next morning, I like to pay attention if
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: it's gonna be the same wind for that. So if
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: I'm scouting around, I jump a deer, I make a
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: note that, Okay, it's the southwest wind today. If it's
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: gonna be north west tomorrow or an east, I'm thinking
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: maybe that there might not be on that spot. He
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: might be on Spot B or something. You know. So UM,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: you can take an account that that deer preferred to
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: UM bed certain areas in certain certain wind conditions and
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: then you get in there, you've done your damage, right,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: get screwed up all you're here where it gets aggressive. Okay,
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: the tuneing for a buck, I literally was in there.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: You talked about sent in an area, cut down, trimmed
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: down trees for two hours to freaking set up this.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: You know, uh honey, locust blood from my freaking hands
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: all over the tree and everything. UM. I don't know
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: if I would have waited two days. If that they
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: would have came in the next day and maybe you know,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: after getting up out of his bed then poking a
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: little bit more would have sense some major ship going
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: on and not coming back to that or um. But
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: I was there the next morning from to grow right
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: back in his bed and got it done, so I
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: would like, I like to do that, get out of quick.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: And then once I learned that spot, dude, I got
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: that stand already pre set, so you know, after a
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: good rain or it's the wind directions right, oh man.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: It's it's so nice to be able to have a
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: phenomenal spot for the morning to slide into and hunt
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: instead of you know, a questionable um spot that you're
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: heading in the morning. You know, because you know, I
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: don't know if it's for you. But aren't morning spots
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: the toughest ones for most hunters to find? For sure?
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: A good morning spot definitely seems like it, and I
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: would agree it's easy to get on the field. You
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: can watch stuff coming out or when things get up
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: and go to you know, through feeding, But um, the
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: time of deer coming back or to get into that.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: A lot of times they'll be in there before you
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: get in there, or you'll miss that boat. So how
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: often is the bumping dump for you something you actually
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: proactively go in there to do that. I know there's
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: some one situation where you're scouting scouting scouting and you
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: accidentally bump him and then you say, okay, I'm gonna
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: make the best of the situation set up. But then
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: the other is when you are thinking to yourself, all right,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: today I'm finding the dam buck. I'm gonna scout until
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I bump him, Like, is that a thing you do
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: or is it usually the ladder? I'll do both of them.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: I'll do if if I don't know where that buck,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: is that better? Or if I'm scouting a new a
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: lot of these deer that um, I didn't particularly going
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: for that buck to bed that to bump the actual
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: twenty for a buck. I was doing scouting to go
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: hunt Frohm and jump him out of his bed to
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: learn where he was actually at that. I think I
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: don't know. For me, probably the most important piece of
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: information of bulk hunter could have is um, knowing where
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: dear beds, and then uh take into account. I don't know.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: People talked about the spokes on a wheel, Um, how
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: close you can get to that to see if you've
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: heard about the three days cycle, there on a three
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: day cycle that you know, every third day, maybe I'll
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: see that buck come through. I've heard some things like that.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: Is that something you've seen to be true? Well that
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: was big years ago. Yeah, there there is. There's a
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: three day cycle off the hubble that wheel, but there's
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: a one day cycle if you're freaking in close enough
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: and tight enough where he's betted, you're gonna see that
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: dear just about every freaking day coming out of there,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: if you're off on that tangent. And today he decides
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: to go run this side of the farm to look
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: for some goals, and then tomorrow he runs off the
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: total opposite side of the farm. Uh. Yeah, and it's
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: three days before he gets back to that same one.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: You're sitting there, sitting there, sitting there, and all of
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: a sudden, third day there he was again. There's a
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: spot in there that's an everyday cycle. Um. That's where
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: I'm kind of honing in on and trying to get
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: closest to um. Dude, there's nothing more empowering about sitting
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: in a tree stand and watching a slob just get
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: right up out of his bed and uh and not
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: even have a clue you're freaking there. It's it's uh, um,
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: it's pretty phenomenal. And there's it's fun to watch them
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: crawl back into their beds and see what they do
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: it too. Um and a lot of guys doing that too.
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: But all these bucks that crawl back into their beds
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: and dead up in initially in the morning, they seem
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: to be always you want to stick around a little
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: longer because they always seem to get up and read
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: situated or reposition a little bit um a little later too.
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: So uh. And that's what I count out in that
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: October is they're they're in there, They're in the bedding area.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: They're really not on a move. But they are up
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: and doing a little bit of movement. You know, something
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: could get them um clost enough. I don't know how
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: many times I've climbed out of trees a huge buck
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: better within fifty yards of me, and they even have
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: a freaking clue. I was even there and just got
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: the hell out, you know. So, so we gotta break
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: down how you actually choose them the spot to set up,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: so you bump the buck out of there. You saw
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: him run off, and let me take one step back.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: I'm assuming when you go into purposefully bump a deer
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: that you're doing this with the wind in your face.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: So the wind's got tell me if I'm wrong? Is
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: that true or not? So I really don't have because
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: the train you can't keep I'm saying what you know,
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: people talking about the way, dear move. You can't keep
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: the women your face the whole time and get to it.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: You go through methodically. You gotta pay attention to most
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: of us when we go scout, our eyes are pin
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: to the ground looking for tracks, and you gotta get
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: accustomed to being able to do a little of that.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: But you gotta you've gotta be looking up and getting
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: a glimpse of that the worst thing in the world.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: I I hate it when I jump a deer and
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: I don't get a glimpse of is rack. I mean,
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: I hear big cage smashing through and I don't I
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: don't know which one it was or if you know,
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: I didn't get a good enough look at it. Um
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: So you gotta custom yourself to it a little bit.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: But you're never gonna be able to just constantly do
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: the old wind in the face and uh, just cover
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: a lot of ground where you think that deer might
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: be better. You're you're scouting, You're poking around. Now all
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: of a sudden you bump them off a flat, right, Okay,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: it's a big flat there. He is better on that flat. Now,
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: you just you got that bed. If he comes back
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: to that bed, you gotta be able to shoot. I
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: like to some of the people picked up the spot
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: that they scout a little bit coming into that, like Cody.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: I want to be able to pick that spot, but
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: still want to be able to hit that. The same
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: with scrapes. You know, people set up down wint the scrapes.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: When I used to do that. I read the articles
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: years ago or heard it, we're talking about it. I
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: would sit down with the scrapes and I watched a
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: buck coming from the totopos the way I worked with
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: scrape and leave without me able to get in their
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: own it. So I want to be able to shoot
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: the scrape and I want to be able to shoot
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: the bed. So, uh when direction you know, you know
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: what it's gonna be. Next day, you're in there. Now
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: he's out of there, you can set up your stand
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: and you can slide in. Um, you can get in
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: there the next morning and be and be set and
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: be in for a good good night. So you're down
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: wind of the bed there within shooting range of the bed. Well, no,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: not not not down when you want to be where
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: that deer wherever he's coming in, can't smug. And now
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: remember that deer is gonna most of the time you're
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: gonna do like a jay hook into that bed. They're
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: gonna look down around and then get that wind coming
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: into your face. And if you're on the wrong side
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: of that bed, even though you're down wind, um, he's
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: gonna get you and he's gonna bug out. So you
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: know you're taking the educated guests or you're gonna look
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: at the sign and read it where you think he's
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: gonna enter, and then you just strategically make sure that
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: you just can't get your win. And the thing I
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: love about mornings too. I know guys hate mornings, they
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: hate getting them up with, and you're you got thermals
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: all coming up. I just think it's such you've got
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: worn out deer from running around all night, you know,
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: Jason or whatever, I don't know. I think it's some
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: of the best time to kill, killing really big deers
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: on morning post, you know, getting back into their innet. October.
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: So you talked about those thermals um and then also
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: trying to get down wind of where a buck's gonna
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: jay hook in there, and that all leads me to
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: just trying to better understand your thoughts around setting up
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: with wind. I know that you talk about trying to
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: find these bulletproof sets. You you're not big man any
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: direction anyway, that's it's uh. And I know the bulletproof
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: because I'll have adult coyotes get down winto me and
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: not even have a clue that I'm there. So you
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: know something's going on with the draft of the wind,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: the way it's being taken out of there. Um, And
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: they'll come from experience, and a lot of times the
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: experience is what sucks is that first time in you're
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: taking a gamble that you got this all figured out right,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: and you may sit that stand and the winds and
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: the thermals might do some some goofy stuff that that
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: you didn't anticipate, and then you all that time you
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: took the stuff that stand all real nice, and it's
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: in a wrong spot and now you gotta readjust it
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: so and ain't like I did get this ship. You
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: m right every time. But by doing that and learning that,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: I think I got a pretty good idea of I
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: always think of it this way, if you want to
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: think of where you'd want your scent to go more
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: or less than um, where you'd love to be sitting
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: and have that sent to goal and kind of think
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: of it almost like you're banking, you know, pool game
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: or something. Um, you're thinking a little deeper into them, Um,
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: what could happen? Um? Because dude, you can be you
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: can have to win right for you. And I've had
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: deer in the big woods and big pines and all
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: that literally win me from direction. You'd say there's absolutely
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: no way in hell that deer got my sense and
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: bugged out of there, and then all of a sudden,
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: I always tell that story. One day I started snowing,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: and I watched the snow coming by me where I'm
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: at the right way. Then I watched it hit the
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: opening in the pines and go the other way, and
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: all snows going up, you know, down that draw, and
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: then another opening took the snow and went it did
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: a big j hook right to where I did. With standing.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: I said, no, now, I now I figured out why
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: that's done, But he did. He did send me. There's
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: no way I could have known that or um back then. Anyhow,
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: That's how I learned it. You know, I think about
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: that stuff now, um, chryst, I think about my scent,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: the one thing off the tree I'm in getting on
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: the right position that I would hit the tree and
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: wrap around it to the left more than the right,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: just to throw that sent you know, a little different directions.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: So can you can you think of any example of
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: some sets like this where you have you know, created
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: or found a bulletproof set. Can you describe something that
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: because I feel like this is one of those things
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: that people hear about, but it's hard to country right. Uh.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: So you got some hill countries where you got uh,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: maybe you're on the top of knob. So I've had
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: a lot of elk two in my past, so I've
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: kind of learned um a lot of that from from
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: hunting out. But so you got a wind direction coming
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: that you're set up from a knob. Then you got
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: a hill behind you that has thermals coming up. And
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: as those thermals come up the hill, they're running into
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: the wind direction coming across the top, and they create
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: a chimney effect. And you have another hill to your
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: left at the thermals are coming up, and you've got
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: another one thing right, And all of a sudden, you
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: got all this soft traft coming up, and you got
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: one set blowing off and I can get deered down
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: into me, the right of me, the left of me,
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: and they just don't have a freaking clol. And here's
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: the thing that's that's all the ship with sun control
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: and all that is great to be good hygiene and
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: all that, but there's nothing you can do to beat
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: a white tails knows if he starts sniffing for you,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: he's gonna find you. So the only way to beat
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: a big white tail's nose is that absolutely no sense
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: coming off your body is getting to where he's at.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: And that's all got to do with the win direction
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: of the terminal, doesn't have to do with your your
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: suits and what you're washing with. Um. Yeah, you can
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: get away with maybe a little bit more and a
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: deer that's not as alarmed, there's accustomed to people or whatever.
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: But if a deer is looking for you and wants
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: to find you, if there's any amountitor that's got from
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: you to that animal, he's gonna set smell you. But
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: if there's no air or vapor from your body getting
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: to him, there is no way in hell he's gonna
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: bust you. Now, the only way is gonna bust you
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: is if you're sitting there pissing your pants and the
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: electricity is pouring off your body and you're so nervous.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: He's got that sixth sense. He actually senses you in
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: that tree. Um, you know, nervousness or whatever it is,
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: or you you know, you got your your eyes or
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: your moving or whatever. So it's a it's a it's
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: a it's a big game. I used to tell Cody
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: learned learned to disappear, and it was and then he
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: finally for that one vannage. So now I know what
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: you mean about just disappearing. Just go away, man, Just
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: there's nobody here, there's nothing happening. You find those spots,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: go they are They're very enjoyable to hunt, very empowering. Man.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: You you mentioned disappearing in the woods. I gotta ask
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: about the eye thing I heard you have talked about.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: You think that deer can can see the white cere
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: eyes are since you looking at them? Dude, I don't
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: think anything. I know. A deer will look right down
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: into your soul for your eyeballs, just like anybody else would. Um,
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: you could look at me the wrong way across the
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: bar boy, and you can say a lot of shifts
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: to me through through a look. And so where I've
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: learned um a lot on that is with filming with
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: with binoculars, anything with a lens or. And I was
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: I had coke bottles glasses when I started out, honey,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: and I would have to say that up for hunters
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: is the biggest, um hindrance to the guys. If you
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: wear glasses and you don't cover them up, So I
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: took it a step further. Now I got rid of glasses.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: I had lastic surgery, but I still see them. Deer
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: will look right and you can tell you And here
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: here's how you can tell that they're looking at your eyes.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: That's all you gotta do. You get a doll that
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: looks right in your eyes, you just splint them eyes,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: close them and we can just barely see her and
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: just watch her flicker Carroll and go about her freaking business.
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: Danger gone, and saying, with your binoculars, do you see
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: what I'm staring at? You just take them binoculars and
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: slowly tilt them down like a forty five degree angle.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: As soon as them binoculars go away from that deer
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: seeing them, they just flicked her channel and go about
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: their business. Danger gone. Um. So it's the same with eyes,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: it's the same with camera lenses. It's the same with binoculars,
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: um and dude. When I get my head net down
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: and my eyes covered, I get some big ship coming
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: in that just looks right on through me and they
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: don't even know what the frick is going on up there.
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: So that's something a lot of guys don't do that.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: I don't know anybody who puts a set over where
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: the head net you know what, Leave the head and
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: net off and get two little rings that will go
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: around your freaking eyes to cover your boot. It ain't
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: your head you need to cover, it's your eyeballs. Yeah,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: I definitely. Oh, by the way, we got a head
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: net coming out. Well, I've been always wanting to have one,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: but I don't know if. But uh, there's enough out
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: there you can customize to make. I take the reader
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: one so that you can see through and cut cut
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: some on there. You'll try it sometimes. If you got
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: deer that around you don't want to shoot, and you're
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: waiting for a certain buck kick, just put the head
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: net down and you can have it so you can
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: simply and I can shoot through a head net. Um,
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: if you're not comfortable for shooting one, just let everything
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: go about. His business was near you, and then you
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: can put the thing back up. If you're filming and
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: glass and you're wanting to watch. But if you want
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: something that's coming through that's not to get you, um,
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: throw that thing down. I'll tell you man, you you
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: will not get busted. And that you can wear a
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: three piece suit up there on Okaming. As long as
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: those eyes are covered, you'll be good. You'll be good
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: to go. I'm gonna test that one this year. I
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: like that. UM. Back to the wind thing. So something
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: that I know a lot of people struggle with and
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: I do too, is trying to figure out how to
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: balance playing the wind so that you don't get winded,
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: but then also trying to be in the spot where
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: a buck thinks he's got the wind in his favor.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: And you always hear about hunting these like the wind,
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: just cutting corners, trying to be just off the edge
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: and stuff like that. And can you describe exactly how
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: you think through that? You just you just gave me
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: a scenario that in a situation that a buck is coming,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: he'll be concerned about how that's good for him. Like
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: I said, a deer does not. UM. There's ways that
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: they travel through there was there's way that they prefer
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: to come into a bad leave a bed where they
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: get spooked or alarmed. They want to bust out and
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: run into the wind for a little bit and then
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: look back around. Um. A deer cannot move through its
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: entire life and day with the wind perfect room. It's
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: impossible to do. So what you do is you pick
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: your spot, pick your ambush spot, and that ambush spot
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: is the spot you got I'm gonna manipulate. So when
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: that deer comes through there, you want to make sure
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: that that I don't know, it might not even be
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: good for that animal right there, but it's gonna it's
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: gonna be. Um, it's gonna be good for you because
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: you're gonna be in the right you know, the right
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: spot off it that he's not going to get your wind.
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: And the other big thing is um, um, what was
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: this thing about that the other day years ago? But
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: deer would only trust this nose. It wouldn't even believe
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: what I has seen unless it smells it along with it.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: I remember when that changed, when the volume of hunters
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: and things. And I don't tell I don't. I don't
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: know how a year and a half old buck that young.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: It's almost like it gets ingrained into genetics if those
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: teach um teach her off spring from year to year
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: what it is. But deer don't need the sent check anymore.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: They don't need to verify danger with their freaking os anymore.
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: They've spotted your assid and they'll they'll be out of
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: there or bug out. So you really got to be
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: conscience on your setups with the vision and sent, but
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: more importantly obviously sent because you can have the one
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: up on the more they don't see you, and you're
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: gonna see you what they're no. So um, same about
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: a trail, you know, don't don't set up on the
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: inside of a trail with the deer looking across the
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: right the way you're going. You don't want to deer
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: looking through your buddy, Believe me, I just want to
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: You want him looking off somewhere and you've being off
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: the side and not having it, you know, you even
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: in his cone of vision. So throw that in along
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: with your scent the right wind and you've you've been
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: in an affordable tree stand. You set up and you
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: manipulated that spot. That deer comes true, you're gonna get
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: you know, you get your crack on them and maybe yeah,
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: I hope. So you're you're not an advocate for any
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: kind of scent control other than just play the wind
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: right and I is that still true? No? So here's
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: the thing. There's there's always room for sun control or
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: sun control is gonna come in is maybe not a
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: molested deer. Maybe it's a borderline. They're just getting a
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: little hint of um. And if you know do it,
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: there's always a good argument for I'm only need freakxt
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: that takes a shower too three times a day. So
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: but what's funny? You know what I you know my
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: scent control. I use a dial stope, which they say
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: if you want to keep deer out of your garden,
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: to put shavings of that ship out there. I use
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: all kinds of stuff in my clothing that they say,
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: you know, is the worst thing you can use on
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: it um. But I think what you want is antibacterial.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: You know, sweat don't smell until it hits bacteria and
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: then heats created. Keeping you're sent control to a minimum
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: is always going to be good. But what I'm saying
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: is there's no freaking way if you think that you
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: can be completely sent free where a food take showers
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: in this and you think you're gonna be the deer's
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: nose and you don't have guys at all. This deer
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: came in down good, So what so deer came in
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: down with you? I'm looking for the sun of a bitch.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: I watched you know, wind you from freaking treating ours
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: way and never even get to where you even seen it.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: And there's dozens of deer that do that. Um, And
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: if you pay attention, you'll you'll see that. So you
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: still want good, good thing. But like I said, the
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: only way to make sure deer has not sent you
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: is that any vapor coming off your body cannot reach
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: the area is at And there's only one way to
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: do that is what some thermals, some vacuums, some wind
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: direction because you know senil literally to drop the bottom
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: of your tree and literally spill out against the wind somewhat. Um.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: So I've seen that too on my older winds. But
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: start thinking about that. UM. I could tell you a
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: little story out of Hunter too that I taught that
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: lesson to and started coming big deer every year. Um,
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: you're still there because I got something ringing on my
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: phone here. Okay, that's just somebody uh coming so UM
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: A friend of mine years ago, Todd fritzink Uh. You
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: probably know him in the industry. He ended up becoming
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: a very good season hunter uh and ended up with
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: a tragedy. But when he was just green behind the
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: ears and came to the Illinois was a big fan
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: alone wolf. Um, he had it. I'm not gonna mention
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: the suit. Everybody's gonna know what the suit is. And
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: I'm not saying the suits uh don't work. But he
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: had it in his head that he could put a
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: magic suit on and be completely sent free. And even
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: though he thought he was trying to play the wind
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: um subconsciously. You think you got the shield of armor
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: and you don't have a shield of armor. And I
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: told him, how you got to start thinking about this
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: whole deal. Uh, Now you've gotta suit you never washed before,
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: that's probably contaminated. Uh you're thinking you can get away
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: with this and get away with that. Why don't you
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: just go in through the season thinking you can't get
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: away with nothing, and go at it with such a
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: fricking animal vengeance of wind direction, thermals and just you
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: know where you step before you set your stand. Uh.
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: That season he killed his first buck there on one
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: of our releases, and uh because it was nothing but net.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: Ever since after that, he finally just got that part
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: of it um and then you know, honed his skills
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: as and and whatever style he ended up working for
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: him when we'll started working for him. So, and it's
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: like anybody you know so, And I'm not gonna go
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: and say a guy that if you need that badge
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: or that shield, and that's what gives you the confidence,
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: and then you play the wind to a t, go
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: for it. I'll give you a here here. It's a
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: real good story for yourself. When I first started out
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: years ago, sunk was the cover sense of the time.
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: And then it turned into every thought, well, we were smart,
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: and you don't use sunk because stunk sprays. It's alarms,
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: and alarms are deer or whatever. So then it got
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: to be um uh con piss, and it was it
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: was ars arse. That was my badge. Man, I get
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: that shift on and I'd be freaking invincible. One year,
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: Um the industry went short. Nobody had it anywhere. I
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: couldn't find shut kills what I used to use. I
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: ran over at every store, ran across Tom and I
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: was in. I was in a panic, Dude, the season's
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: coming and I got no earth sent right, So I
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: went that season with no cover scent. I've seen more
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: and bigger deer than I ever seen in my entire
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: freaking life. And I've never used the cover sent since
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: and it's been nothing but um good time. So take
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: that into an account that um, you know what I mean,
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: you can get a false sense of security. That's so
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: it might be hurting me man. Um, yeah, it seems
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: to be like as as long as you don't use
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: those things as a crutch, right, don't get don't get
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: false confidence that uses a crutch. Always always play it
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: and then all those little things might be a little
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: bit bonus on top, but never short change the original. Yeah,
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: and I still don't think you know, your average guy
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: is gonna get. Um, do not realize how good at
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: that the animal senses. When I watched the black bear
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: getting run by some dogs in a hurricane, when I
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: was in a tree stand and that thing must have
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: been thirty and my wind was blowing right down the
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: log and road, uh at probably twenty miles that bear
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: hit that freaking logging road and a set of guy
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: look like it hit a brick wall and turned on
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: a dime, caught my scent like like that, not even
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: a question that it was you know, a hint or
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: whatever it is. It was that scent blowing there constantly hard. Uh.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: I think that the animals to see and that's gonna
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: be hard to beat anything that can smell like that
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: unless he just does not get us a whiffery at all.
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: So if you can, if you can think that or
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: picture that in your mind, even be able to um
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: um picture that. I think you know, you might come
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: in a little bit different way and then you don't
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: want to get to it the other Here's another story
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: I can say that was funny as hell. A guy
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: that I was in Camp liss Um, I was hunting
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: Wisconsin and he got up on a hunt two hours
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: before anybody had to get out of bed to go hunt.
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: And the son of a bitch had compulsion and was
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: taking a shower and ship in bags and I'm like,
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: I could use the street and I'm like, what the
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: hell are you doing? You know, as the man, it's
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: like this. When I got up, was time to get ready,
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: and that I says, you must that ship must really
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: really work for you if you're so you know, you're
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: so animate about it um, And he told me, I, yeah,
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: I used it all the time and I haven't seen
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: it here yet. And he was hunting the whole season
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: in Wisconsin. I said that's a possible. It is literally
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: impossible to have not seen a freaking deer hunting in
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: the woods an amount of times he was out there,
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: and I'm like, and I just gave him a little
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: bit of advice, So maybe you should uh forget about
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: all that, get yourself a couple of extra you know,
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: season gead out and start playing that wind a little
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: bit more instead of that crutch. So um, and I've
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: seen that time and time again, and it's just, um,
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: it just stays so. And here's here's the thing that's
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: I don't want to sound eric or anything when you
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: ask me to about you think that they're seeing your eyes. Dude,
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: I don't think nothing. Everything I tell you. I freaking
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: know for a fact, I don't give a ship when
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: any engineers say or what books there or whatever the
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: hell that sho it is. If I'm telling you man,
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: it's it's it's freaking golden because I've I've experienced it
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: numerous numerous times. And um, and not to say that
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: there's some weird ship that can happen. I've had deer
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: come down one to me that I know becau's an
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: away two and and it just it was a time
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: of year that the deer just didn't give a ship.
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: And I have other times you couldn't get anywhere near
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: that damn deer. You you just bug out. So winning rome.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: You know the time of year, change up your your tactics,
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: get more aggressive as it gets closer rut and enduring
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: the ruck do you can get you want to do
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: a bumping dump if you ain't seeing deer. You know
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: the lockdown period. When there's a four day period you
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: don't see a freaking deer, you wonder where all your
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: bucks went. Get your ass down and go walk every
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: ounce of that freaking property until you run into a
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: bunch of bucks looking at you and a bunch of
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: deer that ain't even running off, and just set of
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: stand up and hang onto your freaking half brother, because
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: you are in the game. There's a done heating there.
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: It's got every buck on it right then and there.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: And if you're in the same little draw or the
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: same one lot, you're gonna have the time of your life.
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: And if your two draws over, you're gonna have three
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: days before you see any bucks at all moving around again,
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: because they're on one spot. So I've heard you say
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: that you hate the rut, but there are certain situations
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: like that. I guess where you can you can enjoy that, right, Well,
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: that's why I hate the rut. That's the kind of
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: ship you gotta do. Is too so this year and
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: this property here, when that rut hits, all of a sudden,
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: on here cameras, you'll start getting pictures of all kinds
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: of small bucks, uh, smaller class deer, and literally every
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: freaking buck is gone for weeks, which is amazing. You
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: think they'd stick around and and they got the ones
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: that came into the heat here earlier, got and there,
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: and they're literally freaking gone. And you'll be just spinning
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: your wheel for a couple um the week's hunting here,
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, after the rut the late season,
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: I'll see these things just coming in from across just
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: vast open drop realms. There he is heading back to home,
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: done chasing ship around for you know, three miles this way,
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: three miles that way or so. That's why if you're
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: looking for that deer, and I don't get me wrong,
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: there's a ship thoad other bucks that will be traveling
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: through here, and all these smaller ones running all over hell,
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: you could kill, but the one I'm looking for, he's
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: he is gone. I ain't got a prayer in the
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: world of killing him because he's you know, held up
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: with it. Go and heat two miles on a woodlot somewhere. Um,
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: you're not coming back home tonight. Let's put it that way,
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: you know. So, So in that kind of situation, is
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: is your go to you know, aggressive move literally doing
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: what you just said, Like in that situation, you will
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: walk him down to find a bunch and well, now
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: here so we got again cameras. This is the property
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: that I know. Inside now this property here, there will
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: be a short window during the rock when other you
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: are doing just what my dear are doing. And I
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: don't get it to the lay of the land. Here
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: we've got the only cover in it's all big open stuff.
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: But there'll be a spot I have in a wood
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: lot that every year we'll get one nonresident deer that
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: we've never had a picture of or any experience with it.
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: Just it just seems like one maybe two. Um, that's huge.
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: And I remember one year, Um it was coming at
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: that time, and I knew where I needed to be.
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: I needed to be in that stand the at that time,
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: and my son beat me to that stand at that
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: time and he had a flammer come through that he uh,
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: he kind of messed up on but there. So I
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: was talking about kind of knowing in advance where you
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: need to be. That was my one hope from shooting
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: a big deer that during the next three weeks on
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: this property and that was it. I needed to be
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: there and I wasn't there, So now I had to
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: wait for late season, and then a bunch of the
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: other deer moved back in and it was you know,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: you can go after whatever you wanted to then the
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: there back. So um. It could be a different scenario
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: in areas, whether it's just you know, like Dollar in Illinois,
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: were along the river there, they'll get bucks coming in
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: and they're just traveling, um from miles and miles away.
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: During the ruck. You know, I went here looking for them.
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: Everything is bright, looking for some stragglers or um. But
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: if you're not looking for specific deer, man, get down
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: and go find a don't heat and get them the
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: whole game. We had one here your two year a deer.
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: I don't know if you know this, and that probably
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: a lot of guys don't want her. Deer gets injured
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: a doll she's got a bone broke or an injury,
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: they put off a stink where they smell literally that
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: could do and heat. So one year we had an
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: injured doll up in a draw here and I was
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: on it on the side of my property, and every
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: buck on the property was following that doll in and
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: out of that draw. Every night. There was like thirteen
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: bucks on her and Cody was on the other side.
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: I said, do it. You can hunt all you want
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: over there. I said, everything on this property is over
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: here right now. Um. And they would follow around thinking that,
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: you know, in four days or Somethingy're gonna get lucky
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: or whatever hell doing. And she wasn't going to heat.
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: She was just kind of thing from being injured. But
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: the same with the doll that's going to heat. You
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: can have your entire group of deer all living in
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: one little small spot for a while on your property,
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: and you know you're sitting, you know, half a mile
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: away in another spot where it ain't happening. If you
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: could sit there all day long, you're not getting no action. Brother. Yeah,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: the rut it is the highest of high as the
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: lowest of lows. You either got it or you're down. Yeah,
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: but here's the deal with this ruck. Good, here's what
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: I'm like. But you know, the spots will have been
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: one year in Milwaukee was on Wisconsin Avenue next to
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: the bus stop. If you would have been in a
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: telephone bowl hunting there, you just shot of open young
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: that year he came through freaking that. I mean, that's
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: the kind of ship you're dealing with. The rut. So
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: that's when if you if it's but don't get me wrong,
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: there's run hunters, and you can be you can capitalize
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: on some pretty huge bucks in that rut because they're
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: coming in from my deer are running around like that
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: on somebody else's property. So the guy that sit in
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: the right spot on the right day is going to
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: get that crack at that deer where a little bit
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: later when it gets the late season, he ain't never
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: seen it again because it's coming back here in winter.
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: And so, um, I just don't like hunting a deer
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: that I've never I don't have a personal deal with that.
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, dude. You know a hundred nine
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: years buck comes by under stee before he's getting a
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: freaking arrow on it to actually. Um, But when I'm
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: hunting the specific one i'm wanting, I'm not out just
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: for a a rut buck or something personal, kill you
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: know whatever, Keller. But most guys don't give a shot.
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: They want to they want to kill Jesus during the ruck.
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: If if a deer's on your property, it's funny because
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: we'll have cameras out in a lot of spots, and um,
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: a buck. I was after ones. Uh, the moon face
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: said late, so when the deer were moving later, So
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: I thought, you know what, I'm not in all days sitter,
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: so I can't. So I'm gonna go out a little
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: bit later, and then I'm gonna go sit through the
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: midday when the action was happening. The damn morning that
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: I freaking slept in, this monster was through my yard
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: chasing a frickin door over hell, when I'm sitting here
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: in breakfast, I shouldn't understand. And when I went and
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: checked cameras, I could have been in four different freaking stands.
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: I could have picked that morning and killed that buck
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: on anyone of them. And where the hell was I, uh,
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: you know, like an idiot? Uh, sipping a cup of
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: coffee waiting for I was gonna go in a little later.
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: So I made a bad decision on that one. But
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: that's the kind of stuff that happens, and UM, you
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: gotta go with it, man. Yeah, you just don't know. Man. Um,
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: I feel well, I don't feel I literally have like
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: thirty more topics that I think we did another part.
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: I think we need another podcast. Brother, I know if
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: you're if you're up for it, I think we should
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: do it because I feel like we barely scratch the
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: surface on some of this stuff. Um, but we're coming
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: up on too. I get. I get no more bigger thrill.
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: Then the guy that walks up to me in a
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: shoal that's been hunting two years listen to some stuff
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: we said, I took it the heart, tried it and
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: went and shot to two giant bucks that year. Um,
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: in ways that most average guys that think you're freaking
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: knots that can't be done. Um and seeing seeing these
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: guys get set off on the right foot. The worst
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: thing that aggravates me the worst is to see people
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: getting some false information or some gimmicky stuff and they
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: get set off. The kids just destined for failure. Uh
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: and I think that's just criminal to see that so
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: um and what's really rewarding to me as all these
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: guys have become friends all these years to see what
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: the talent go from. You know, you know you're old
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: when you you watched the guy growing his career twenty
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: years um go from some pretty inexperienced guys to just um,
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: some pretty stealthy, pretty um, pretty educative guys. Man. These
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: guys are like I said, they're they're knocking some and
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: you know what, there's a lot of big stuff to
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: be knocking down these days too. I think years ago
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: there wasn't so um. You know, you've got the right tools,
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: You've got a little bit of right information and location, location,
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: location brothers. So I know, and I feel sorry for
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: some of the guys that are I cut my uh
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: um my teeth on a lot of spots where you know,
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: they don't have spot to hunt. They're hunting these high
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: pressured areas with a lot of hunters. I learned to
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: be a good hunter by hunting that type of scenario
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: with ten acres with ten guys hunting it. Um. And
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: you know, when you can come out of there and
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: see three or four bucks in the night, end up
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: under like your stand stage in Spern, and everybody else
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: comes out and hasn't seen a deer in the night.
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: It's kind of a pretty good feeling. That's you. You know,
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: you're kind of figuring some stuff out. And um, and
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: I said, it's empowering mental to learn it and just
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: keep soaking it in and can you figure it out
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: in the test situations and then you can do it anywhere? Yeah,
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: And like I said, it's so, if you've seen that
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: as much as I did, you you probably learned. Unless
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: you're you can get hit in the head a couple
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: of times and somebody walked up your popped in ahead
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: a few times. You want to take note, he's probably
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: gonna do it again. So but it just don't. And again,
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: my mind works different. I take it in and I
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: and I think about it always. I think about christ
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: I think about tracks that I cut forty years of
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: believe or not. Why are they pop into my head
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: or a scenario. It's just it's it's ugly. Um. I'd
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: like to be able to turn it off at one
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: point here and just take a rest, But well, I'm
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: not on my DNA. Yeah, well, we're gonna have to
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: keep prying into this stuff and do some more investigating
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: to figure it out. Because I think everyone's here in
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: this right now has been learning a lot, and uh,
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: it's helpful stuff. I want to I was just gonna say,
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: I want to ask a few more, just a couple
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: more quick questions because we're gonna kind of pivot and
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: then wrap it up. UM, since we've taken a lot
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: of your time here today, But what were you about
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: to say before I jumped in? I lost my train
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: of thought. I was gonna say something about the about
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: like I said, the caliber guys out now that the
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: kids in the amount of knowledge that we have with
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: you know, with more about the weather and all. I
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: think you have a you know, there's an old school
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: guy that's alter that you know, it's a good hunter
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: and keep getting it done it. I think these guys
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: can can be educated and learning. I never thought that.
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: I thought you were either born with um you know,
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: the talent to be a good athlete or a good hunter,
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: and it's something that you had. But I don't believe anymore.
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: I believe that you can you can learn, and you
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: can UM you can apply it right. You know I
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: never could because, like I said, I just said, I
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: messed up the mindor way I thought, so I had
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: to learn it all my own. No, it certainly seems
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: to have worked for you. Um, okay, last couple of
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: questions real quick. This one is kind of hypothetical scenario
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: that I've been asking a lot of people about lately,
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: and I'm curious to get your thoughts on it. Let's
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: say that I have control of the world and I'm
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: going to take away your ability to hunt for the
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: next ten years. I can't hunt for the next ten
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: years unless you kill your target buck this year, and
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: you've got only one day to do it, and you
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: only get to pick one spot to kill him. If
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: you had to guess right now, what's the day you're
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: gonna pick that's gonna give your very best chances, And
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: describe to me what you think that exact spot would
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: be for this very high stakes hunts. I'm gonna tell
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: you right now, I lost this game because I am
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: not good enough to go in and pick the right
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: day in the right time. On one, I have to
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: have a process of hunting seeing developing. That would be
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: like I'll tell you how I take my pick. I'll
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: take a wheel with the days and throw the freaking
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: roulette wheel, and I would take a dark and I
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: will throw it out my property map, and I will
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: give you that because that is exactly what you're asking
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: me to predict. There is no freaking way on earth
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: that you can figure that out. Now, that one in Wisconsin.
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: That was a pretty good educated type of thing there.
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: But I'm telling you, man, it's that's I guess I
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: ain't hunting ever again. But uh, that's what I say
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: that that's that's fair. That's a fair answer. Um, okay.
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: And then one other kind of totally different topic. But
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: I do think that it's worth just covering off on
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: it a little bit because I think you've talked a
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: lot about different mistakes that have happened throughout the course
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: of your hunting career and how you learn from these
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: different things. You set up in the wrong spot of
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: DearS as something you figured out, you'll learn from it,
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: you get better because of it. Um. One thing that
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: I'm curious if you'd be willing to just give me
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: a little bit of perspective on, is that there was
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: game violation that I know that you had had an
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: issue with back I don't know, a decade ago, and
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: if someone googles you, this thing pops up, and I
- 2:03:46Speaker 1: would love to hear you, know, your perspective on what happened,
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: what you learn from that, because I think there's a
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: lot of people who probably have committed some kind of
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: infraction and didn't realize it, or they did and they
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: all of a sudden. I'm glad you asked that, because
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: this is what we've been wanting to get out since
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: day one. So there's everybody's got their fans, and everybody's
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: got their people that want to bash on them and
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: call them. So back years ago, coming up, anybody, everybody
- 2:04:18Speaker 1: wanted to be the world's best bull hunter, and anybody
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: who shot really big deer always would have this overtone
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: of being a you know, other jealous guys would call
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: them poachers or that they did things illegal, and I'm
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: gonna tell you right now, they weren't too far off.
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: There was a lot of guys doing a lot of
- 2:04:38Speaker 1: shady ship um over the years. So because if you
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: can imagine me coming up in the class of deer
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: that I'm shooting right under everybody's noses, right on the
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: same properties. Um, there was always that people that that
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: hated your wanted you to fail. So over the years,
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: you can imagine the forty years of hunting, I've had
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: a few and then guys, you know, they they'll they'll
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: bring them up and they'll and I know some of
- 2:05:07Speaker 1: the guys who would bring these things up. I know
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: him from years ago. You talked about outright poachers. I've
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: actually taking those guys as projects and change them. They
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: literally believed that a trophy deer would not be moving
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: around in daylight hours. So I ended up falling victim
- 2:05:28Speaker 1: to being in my tree stand ten minutes too late
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: one year there for the reason of catching a trespasser
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: poacher that was not my property. No air knock, but
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: a law enforcement jealous guy on a police department stick
- 2:05:44Speaker 1: a warden after me who we find out later on
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: was watching me for two weeks straight every day evening hunting.
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: And can you imagine being watched for two weeks straight
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: on the evening post and then never being a minute
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: after getting down on the right times doing it, and
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: then one day, uh, you're ten minutes after and you
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: get you get a violation. Now it really rubbed me wrong.
- 2:06:11Speaker 1: That anybody would think that I'd have to cheat with
- 2:06:14Speaker 1: the success I've had, And what really was good in
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: the years to come is taking up this video and
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: filming showing the freaking world that tropey whitetailer up under
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: feet midday and you don't have to be a poacher.
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: Um was validation. So I made the mistake I shouldn't
- 2:06:35Speaker 1: have been even though I got a ticket. The law
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: reads that as long as you don't have an aerow knock,
- 2:06:40Speaker 1: you're not constituting hunting. Who out there has not been
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: in a tree stand ten minutes after closing hours, I'll
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: call them all wires, and every one of us is
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: in our tree stands ten minutes before the season opens
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: in the morning, ready to go. So UM, I didn't.
- 2:06:58Speaker 1: The mistake I made was having the success I've had
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: over the years. And then another occurrence that happened was
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: in the state of Illinois where I ordered licenses and
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: the state of Illinois did not send me all the
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: proper licenses but sent me a permit. Ended up going
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: in the woods and uh never even got caught hunting,
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: but ended up big headlines read of the enemies you know, uh,
- 2:07:24Speaker 1: trophy hunter caught hunting with nold license in the and
- 2:07:27Speaker 1: everybody and your brother if you read that article, would
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: have thought I was the most reckless nuts running around
- 2:07:32Speaker 1: without licenses hunting over bait. Just total freaking insult to
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: uh but mine everybody else is intelligent when that's all
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: that was forgotten, and it was forgotten on their part
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: was a habitat stamp. You know, we had licenses bought,
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: common mistake. They usually let you go by your habitat
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: stamp and then go back to hunting. Not this guy.
- 2:07:57Speaker 1: This is a boon and Crockett that you know, some
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: of these haters are trying to take down and they
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: and somebody had literally taken that. When you when you
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: google that that article. Here's what somebody is doing. That
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: article has gone away for years and somebody is purposely
- 2:08:13Speaker 1: bringing it up to the forefront to damage credibility. So
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: whoever that is, they're a loser. There. Probably ain't got
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: much on her wall and her very yellous type hunter. Um.
- 2:08:24Speaker 1: But all the occurrences I've had over the years, we're
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: all just little mistakes. I've talked to dozens of guys
- 2:08:31Speaker 1: who's done the same thing, even residents of Illinois that
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: I forgot to buy her habitat stamp Um ran into
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: a wrong situation where you know things have happened. But
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: I'll tell you point blank to this day, Uh, if
- 2:08:44Speaker 1: I was a cheater, I would have a world record
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: on my wall right now, and I'd have freaking dozen
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: world class of deer more than I have right now. Um,
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: this ain't what it's all about for me. It's about
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: me and this White Tale, and I never gave her ship.
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: Would anybody else ever thought about me and my talents
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: of deer hunting. So I'm glad we got that out.
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: And now there's no question anybody. If you want to
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: call me a poacher, you want to do whatever you want,
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: call away. But if you want to just dial into
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: white Tail Addictions and watch all of this ship going
- 2:09:15Speaker 1: down for your plane and color, you can see it.
- 2:09:18Speaker 1: So I appreciate you being willing to talk about that,
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: because I do think it's yeah, and I think that
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: what you bring up is it's not it's it's important
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: just to understand in your situation. But I think it's
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: also a really important reminder for just the average Joel
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: out there, because every state you go to, there are
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: so many different little changes and variations and regulations, and honestly, goodness,
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised if there was some little thing
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: I got wrong that I had no idea about. Um.
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: So it's just a good attorney out to read half
- 2:09:49Speaker 1: these laws and regulations and you know, just think of
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: it for a for a guy who does that for
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: a limit to try and take. And I think what
- 2:09:56Speaker 1: they were trying to take me with was they were
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: trying to get rid of baiting in Wisconsin, and they
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: were trying to get a high profile hunter basically pot
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: hunting illegal over abate or something too to verify their case.
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: But that is so freaking uh. That is the lowest
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: thing you can freaking do um to a real trophy
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: hunter is to accuse them of that. And um, it's
- 2:10:22Speaker 1: it's like I said, it's just you've got all the
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: facts you can look at, you can say all you want.
- 2:10:27Speaker 1: And I know every other trophy hunter that I know,
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: all these other guys that come up have experienced the
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: same thing. They'll be and you know what, it's not
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: that way anymore. There's not the jealousy there was years
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: ago because there's the caliber animal around and people are
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: a lot of people are getting them. Like years ago.
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: You gotta remember, not a lot of guys weren't killing deer,
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: and they were not good hunters. They were pissed four
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: hunters and they didn't have the talent to do it.
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: And just because I couldn't do it and you could there,
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: you've got to be doing something wrong. That's the mentality
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: that they had, um and it's sad. And I think
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: even at Ordin, what I think he found out is
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: the world was pulled over his frecking eyes and he
- 2:11:04Speaker 1: might have seen the lights of that. Somebody just painting
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: me out to be a scumbag was really a scumbag
- 2:11:09Speaker 1: of Saul. So yeah, well, I feel like the morals
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: story here is leave the jealousy at home and always
- 2:11:15Speaker 1: double check your regulations and exactly you need to um
- 2:11:20Speaker 1: even knowing your regulations and needn't even knowing the facts. Uh,
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: you gotta do everything completely right. If you gotta imagine
- 2:11:29Speaker 1: being in the woods for four four decades, every day
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: to season evening in late different states, you're bound to
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: step in a hole uh here there, and just like speed,
- 2:11:40Speaker 1: you know, you get a speeding ticket here there. But
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: these guys want to paint this ship is like you
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: got caught coaching a deer. You did some ship, Dude.
- 2:11:47Speaker 1: That would be the lowest thing I could ever do
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: to myself to take one illegally. It's it's it's cheating,
- 2:11:53Speaker 1: and I don't need to cheat. I have enough tools,
- 2:11:55Speaker 1: um to win that game on my own. So if anything,
- 2:11:58Speaker 1: I would like to put a little van is in
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: their court. You certainly the proof is in the pudding. Um.
- 2:12:05Speaker 1: That being the case, I think there's probably a lot
- 2:12:08Speaker 1: of people that hurt our conversation today and want more, um.
- 2:12:12Speaker 1: You want to learn more about what you're doing. You're
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: putting on a lot of stuff these days, between the
- 2:12:16Speaker 1: podcasts and white Tail Addictions and all the content. Where
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: can people go to to learn more about that stuff?
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: And uh? And if they want to get some of
- 2:12:25Speaker 1: these tools you talk about as far as gear, can
- 2:12:26Speaker 1: you fill us in a little bit there too? Yeah,
- 2:12:29Speaker 1: so you can. You can go to a loan World
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: custom gear and you can attamp into our uh YouTube
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: page are white Tail Addictions page? Justin Hollendsworth heads up
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: our whole um saying there you can put in applications.
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: We had a ton of applications. We actually have had
- 2:12:44Speaker 1: to shut a balance here for guys wanting to get involved.
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: We want to see some of the new guys. Again,
- 2:12:50Speaker 1: you're seeing a lot of really big deer shot on
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: these shows. We're not it's it's it just happens to
- 2:12:55Speaker 1: be that way, but we're not all about it. So
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: we do have some deer that are not that big
- 2:12:58Speaker 1: that we understand. Our guys are in areas at the
- 2:13:01Speaker 1: caliber animals are not that size, or you're hunting public
- 2:13:04Speaker 1: or you're just starting out. We want those stories too.
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: We would like to have a few women in there.
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: And the equipment. We have some high end equipment. Uh,
- 2:13:13Speaker 1: That's what I've always done. There's a lot of other
- 2:13:16Speaker 1: stand manufacturers out there. There's extual p that have some
- 2:13:20Speaker 1: uh some more reasonable ones, so you can you can
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: go there and purchase uh some stands that are a
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: good price, or you can UM. I think we have
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: some of the best best designs in the tree stand
- 2:13:31Speaker 1: industry UM with our new line of stands, and I
- 2:13:34Speaker 1: think guys appreciate those good tools. I appreciate them, and
- 2:13:40Speaker 1: it's the reason why I keep making them better and
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: better is because I want better and better equipment for myself,
- 2:13:44Speaker 1: so um, and then we have also a little, uh
- 2:13:49Speaker 1: you know, a tiny little podcast with the attributes and
- 2:13:53Speaker 1: tribulations between a son and his father that are kind
- 2:13:56Speaker 1: of interesting. But we've always enjoyed yours and you came
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: highly recommend did from numerous people, so I'll say that
- 2:14:02Speaker 1: about you. That's why I took the time to give
- 2:14:04Speaker 1: you a um this podcast. And I wouldn't mind. Like
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: I said, there's so much stuff to cover, we could
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: never cover it on one, and I enjoy coming back
- 2:14:12Speaker 1: on so all right, well, I'm gonna hold to that
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: because I really would like to keep talking. This has
- 2:14:18Speaker 1: been a lot of fun. And if it wasn't for
- 2:14:20Speaker 1: my wife texting me and telling me that the kids
- 2:14:22Speaker 1: are getting pissed because they need to eat, keep on talking.
- 2:14:26Speaker 1: I hear your brother, Well, Andre, thank you. I hope
- 2:14:29Speaker 1: we can chat more soon before the season or soon after.
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: And if not, though, good luck come October one. Hey, brother,
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: luck got nothing to do with it. Remember that it's
- 2:14:39Speaker 1: a good I'll leave you. I'll leave you with that.
- 2:14:42Speaker 1: That's a good point. Alright, guys, there you go, the
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: one and only Andre du Quisto quite quite the the
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: chat I mean, there's a lot to take in. There,
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: a lot of good stuff. Um. I do want to
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: circle back on one thing, though, and just make make
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: things very crystal clear. I asked Andre about his running
- 2:15:07Speaker 1: with the game violation situation because I think it's a
- 2:15:11Speaker 1: situation we can all learn from. I was not doing
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: this because I want to any way normalize by violating
- 2:15:17Speaker 1: hunting regulations. I want to make sure we say, hey,
- 2:15:21Speaker 1: anyone can make a mistake, anyone can do something that's
- 2:15:24Speaker 1: not quite right, and we all have to take responsibility
- 2:15:27Speaker 1: for that, and we all need to learn from that.
- 2:15:28Speaker 1: So what I take away from andres situation is just
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: that each and every one of us has to double
- 2:15:34Speaker 1: and triple check regulations. We've got to pay attention to
- 2:15:37Speaker 1: the changes each year, and we need to do our
- 2:15:39Speaker 1: very best to follow them to a t um. I
- 2:15:42Speaker 1: mentioned when we were chatting a second ago that a
- 2:15:44Speaker 1: lot of this, myself included, has maybe unwittingly done something
- 2:15:49Speaker 1: wrong without knowing it. And I'm saying that not to
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: imply that that's okay. I'm not saying, oh, it's the
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: government's fault for having too many hunting regulations. I'm not
- 2:15:57Speaker 1: condoning any kind of violation or high later. I'm simply saying,
- 2:16:02Speaker 1: be careful, be responsible, don't let a silly mistake ruin
- 2:16:06Speaker 1: your hunt, or your year, or the next few years
- 2:16:09Speaker 1: of your hunting life. Um. This conversation has just been
- 2:16:12Speaker 1: a great reminder for me to personally go back and
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: reread the regulations for Michigan and other states. I'm going
- 2:16:17Speaker 1: to just to make sure I've got a downpad. Uh,
- 2:16:21Speaker 1: And that's that. I think I'd recommend everybody do the
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: same too. It's it's on us to make sure we've
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: got it right. So that's that's why I bring something
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: like this up. I think we need to just we
- 2:16:32Speaker 1: need to talk about these things. We need to think
- 2:16:34Speaker 1: about these things. And it's not the most fun thing
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: to talk about, um, but it's it's important. So sorry
- 2:16:41Speaker 1: we have to wrap up on that note. But hey,
- 2:16:44Speaker 1: this podcast is all about learning as much as we
- 2:16:46Speaker 1: possibly could from Andre in all sorts of different ways.
- 2:16:50Speaker 1: I think we did that. We've heard a lot lots
- 2:16:53Speaker 1: take in so I'm gonna let you go. Now, let's
- 2:16:56Speaker 1: just do on all this. Let's you grind it on out.
- 2:16:59Speaker 1: See it as anything you can add to your hunting
- 2:17:01Speaker 1: repertoire and uh hopefully it's going to help you sum
- 2:17:05Speaker 1: this hunting season. So thank you for tuning in, thanks
- 2:17:08Speaker 1: for following along, and until next time, stay wired to Hunt.
