- 3:10Speaker 5: another Tuesday night. So y'all know I'm bringing you another
- 3:15Speaker 5: book and another author.
- 3:33Speaker 1: But I'm going to ask you guys, how are you doing?
- 3:38Speaker 1: You know, I always ask you guys that. Have you
- 3:42Speaker 1: taken a chance and just breathe today? Just and just
- 3:50Speaker 1: let it out.
- 3:53Speaker 6: I did. I did.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Because, you know, it's coming up to that season. So
- 3:58Speaker 1: we got a month, one month, people. And y'all know
- 4:00Speaker 1: what's going to be coming up in November, right? So
- 4:03Speaker 1: y'all know I'm one of those people, if you got
- 4:05Speaker 1: something to say, here's a place to go say it.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Don't wait till after everything is tallied up and then
- 4:11Speaker 1: you want to quote, quote, I hate the stuff that's
- 4:14Speaker 1: going on. We ain't doing that. So a lot of states,
- 4:18Speaker 1: your voting deadline is coming up.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Okay.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I think South Carolina, I think it's October 4th. So
- 4:26Speaker 1: go ahead and get your registrations in because you know,
- 4:29Speaker 1: you have to be registered at least 30 days before
- 4:31Speaker 1: the election.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Okay.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But we've gotten that out the way. But I got
- 4:37Speaker 1: another author, you guys. The best wisdom that you get,
- 4:45Speaker 1: a lot of people think it comes from your best friend,
- 4:48Speaker 1: comes from your mother. The best wisdom that I feel
- 4:52Speaker 1: you get, and according to this author by the title
- 4:55Speaker 1: of her book, is from above. Have you ever just
- 5:00Speaker 1: stood up there and you were just going through something
- 5:01Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, God, what am I supposed to do?
- 5:04Speaker 1: And then the answer just falls on you. You're like, okay, okay.
- 5:10Speaker 1: So that is what my author today is talking about,
- 5:17Speaker 1: the wisdom from above, the best wisdom you can get.
- 5:21Speaker 1: So I am going to bring up, and y'all know
- 5:23Speaker 1: I'm bad at names, so I'm going to go ahead
- 5:25Speaker 1: and apologize now.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Makani. Makani.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Miss Makani, author or authoress Makani. Come on up, girl.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Come on up. Come on up. Hey.
- 5:39Speaker 6: Hi. Hey, hey, hey, guys. Hi. What's up out there
- 5:43Speaker 6: in the Facebook, social media? How you guys doing?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Girl, we are good, but let me ask you a question.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Did I say it right?
- 5:54Speaker 6: Yes, you said the name right. You got it right.
- 5:58Speaker 6: I like the intro.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Thank you. It's my producer. It's all on her. I
- 6:04Speaker 1: remember the first time hearing it, I was behind the scenes.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I was crying. You know, the ugly girl crying. I
- 6:11Speaker 1: was ugly. But welcome, welcome, welcome. So before we go
- 6:21Speaker 1: any further, tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 6:25Speaker 7: Well, you know, in the short to long, I'm born
- 6:29Speaker 7: in the Caribbean, originally from Trinidad and Tobago. I moved
- 6:34Speaker 7: to New York City when I was 16. Spent 20-something
- 6:38Speaker 7: years in New York as a teacher, child advocate, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 7: social worker. You know, it was a real culture shock
- 6:47Speaker 7: to me moving from the Caribbean to New York because,
- 6:50Speaker 7: you know.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Cold icebox. I don't like cold.
- 6:55Speaker 7: That's why I'm currently in Arizona, where the sunshine is
- 6:59Speaker 7: as hot as ever. Hot as hell, like they would say. But,
- 7:03Speaker 7: you know, my life took a lot of ups and
- 7:07Speaker 7: downs and valleys and ebbs and flows.
- 7:09Speaker 6: But I've learned to heal through my writing.
- 7:12Speaker 7: And that's how I started off in college.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Writing, healing through the writing.
- 7:18Speaker 7: Canvas on paper and just getting my thoughts out on
- 7:22Speaker 7: paper so I can... get through my valleys and my mountaintops.
- 7:26Speaker 7: And so, you know, I have three books and we'll
- 7:30Speaker 7: talk more. Let's hear what he has to say, right?
- 7:34Speaker 1: A lot of authors say they start writing to either
- 7:39Speaker 1: just help them go through what they're going through or
- 7:46Speaker 1: just to be an outlet. It's crazy how Something so
- 7:53Speaker 1: beautiful can come from some of the craziest thoughts that
- 7:56Speaker 1: we may have in our mind. It's crazy. So you
- 8:01Speaker 1: said you started writing when you were in college, you said?
- 8:04Speaker 6: Yes, I did.
- 8:05Speaker 7: My first book was a poetry book about 18 pieces
- 8:11Speaker 7: of poems. And that comes from relationships, the poems. The
- 8:17Speaker 7: impetus of it was a lot through relationships. You know,
- 8:20Speaker 7: you get through your heartbreaks and your ups and downs and,
- 8:23Speaker 7: you know, Identity crisis and just a value in yourself,
- 8:28Speaker 7: you know And that came as I wrote I was
- 8:31Speaker 7: healing at the time Having absentee father and dealing with
- 8:37Speaker 7: some crisis in my own personal life I just started
- 8:40Speaker 7: jotting down because I read a lot of African American
- 8:43Speaker 7: literature in college classical literature and that was like one
- 8:47Speaker 7: of my driving.
- 8:48Speaker 6: Forces that caused me to start a.
- 8:51Speaker 7: Opening up about literary uh learning and just enveloping myself
- 8:56Speaker 7: and just creativity.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Now see that's that's how did you feel with all
- 9:03Speaker 1: that creativity was it shocking to you like I had
- 9:06Speaker 1: all this in me like how did you feel when
- 9:09Speaker 1: you started like everything started to come together when that creativity.
- 9:13Speaker 7: How did you feel So one of my passions when
- 9:17Speaker 7: I was a little girl, I always loved reading. One
- 9:20Speaker 7: of my favorite, favorite books was a series of books
- 9:24Speaker 7: was Nancy Drew.
- 9:25Speaker 6: I love mystery. I love reading.
- 9:27Speaker 7: And I was an avid reader from even like sixth grade.
- 9:31Speaker 7: And so I would just pick up these books and
- 9:33Speaker 7: I can explore the world, explore ideas and concepts and
- 9:37Speaker 7: contents through reading. And so I even did storytelling when
- 9:42Speaker 7: I was young. They used to have a competition with storytelling.
- 9:45Speaker 7: So you would have to rehearse a whole book and
- 9:47Speaker 7: then just tell the story through the library.
- 9:50Speaker 6: And I fell in love with storytelling.
- 9:52Speaker 7: And so I guess as I got older, I recognized
- 9:57Speaker 7: that I'm a storyteller, you know, and God has given
- 10:00Speaker 7: me that inherent ability to tell stories through creativity.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Oh, that's crazy. That is crazy awesome. And you're a teacher.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Let me guess. Let me guess. High school.
- 10:17Speaker 7: No, I did a little bit of that through my
- 10:20Speaker 7: journey in New York. I was a melting pot of elementary,
- 10:27Speaker 7: middle school, and high school because I was a substitute teacher.
- 10:30Speaker 6: So I did all the levels.
- 10:33Speaker 7: However, at this current time, my niche is in middle
- 10:36Speaker 7: school and fourth grade. Listen.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Listen. How do y'all do it? I'm talking to you
- 10:42Speaker 1: as a middle school mother. How do y'all do it?
- 10:49Speaker 6: You see how short my hair is? And I always
- 10:51Speaker 6: say I had the gray hair in between. It's hidden
- 10:54Speaker 6: in there.
- 10:55Speaker 7: I got a lot of color, but it's hidden. Every
- 10:57Speaker 7: day I think I grow a little bit of gray
- 10:59Speaker 7: hair more, you know?
- 11:01Speaker 6: Oh, my gosh.
- 11:03Speaker 1: It's work.
- 11:04Speaker 6: It's work.
- 11:07Speaker 1: The elementary kids, I can understand. They're young. Their little
- 11:12Speaker 1: minds are so mushy and it's taking up everything. High schools,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I can't. They just feel like, you know, I got this.
- 11:20Speaker 1: It's that middle school. I have an 11-year-old daughter. And
- 11:28Speaker 1: I'm going to tell from a parent, thank you and
- 11:35Speaker 1: God bless you.
- 11:39Speaker 7: It takes a lot of guts and it takes a
- 11:41Speaker 7: lot of patience, a lot of compassion, and.
- 11:44Speaker 6: You have to be in it to win it.
- 11:46Speaker 7: You have to be, you have to have a passion
- 11:49Speaker 7: for it because you can't, you can't have, if you
- 11:52Speaker 7: don't have a backbone as a teacher, you will quit
- 11:55Speaker 7: in the middle of it, you know?
- 11:59Speaker 5: Yes.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So what traits from your childhood did you bring along
- 12:07Speaker 1: In your writing journey. So we know you're a teacher.
- 12:11Speaker 1: You know what, that's a great question. How about from
- 12:14Speaker 1: a teacher standpoint, did you bring any of those traits
- 12:18Speaker 1: to your writing? Did that help in any type of way?
- 12:23Speaker 7: Well, like we know, everything has content, right? And everything
- 12:27Speaker 7: has context. Context and content work together. So as they
- 12:31Speaker 7: teach you as educators, you have to understand what is
- 12:33Speaker 7: the context? Why is this author writing this situation? Why
- 12:37Speaker 7: is the narrator telling the story? From what perspective? And
- 12:41Speaker 7: so as a teacher, I also examine myself. If I'm
- 12:46Speaker 7: going to talk to my audience or give my audience
- 12:49Speaker 7: any type of feedback or some new knowledge, I have
- 12:52Speaker 7: to know from prior knowledge, what would my audience connect?
- 12:57Speaker 7: How do they relate to what I'm talking about? You know,
- 13:00Speaker 7: all of us have a story. We have a connection.
- 13:03Speaker 7: It could be divorce. It could be rape. It could be,
- 13:06Speaker 7: you know, suicide. Whatever the story is, we.
- 13:09Speaker 6: Have to have some context and some content to relate.
- 13:13Speaker 6: We are not living in an island.
- 13:16Speaker 7: Some of us may have been born on the island,
- 13:19Speaker 7: but we don't live on the island by ourselves.
- 13:21Speaker 6: We have to have relationships. We have to be relatable
- 13:24Speaker 6: and relevant.
- 13:25Speaker 7: And so my story in this book that I wrote,
- 13:28Speaker 7: this final devotion, it has a lot of relevance in relationship,
- 13:34Speaker 7: in spirituality, in faith, in finances, in everything. So you
- 13:40Speaker 7: have to understand what the gamut of life is bringing
- 13:43Speaker 7: to you. And you make your bloopers, you make your mistakes,
- 13:46Speaker 7: you have your downfalls, but you have to learn from them, right?
- 13:50Speaker 6: And that's where the wisdom comes from.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Well, since you said the book, we are going to
- 13:59Speaker 1: bring out the book. Y'all know me. I am very
- 14:03Speaker 1: big on book covers. I am a cover girl. If
- 14:06Speaker 1: your cover grabs me, I am going to be looking.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Y'all look at this cover. You cannot say anything wrong
- 14:22Speaker 1: with this cover. It is like they say, written all
- 14:26Speaker 1: over it. This is such a beautiful cover. Please tell
- 14:33Speaker 1: us a little bit about it.
- 14:37Speaker 6: Yes. So wisdom from above, when you see the people
- 14:41Speaker 6: looking up.
- 14:42Speaker 7: And they're like their head is towards the sky and
- 14:45Speaker 7: out of the clouds. So out of the clouds, when
- 14:48Speaker 7: I envisioned the book cover and I saw the title
- 14:52Speaker 7: in my heart, I said, oh my God, you know,
- 14:55Speaker 7: someone needs to value what God gives.
- 14:59Speaker 6: And when you're.
- 15:00Speaker 7: Finding decision-making skills, you can't just come from a place of,
- 15:06Speaker 7: you know, frustration. Sometimes we are frustrated in our process
- 15:09Speaker 7: of making decisions. But when God gives us insight and
- 15:14Speaker 7: we put our minds to Christ, we get the value nuggets.
- 15:19Speaker 6: We get the knowledge and we get the insight and
- 15:22Speaker 6: it brings peace.
- 15:23Speaker 7: So as you see the people looking up, they're looking
- 15:26Speaker 7: for answers.
- 15:28Speaker 6: And that answer comes from Christ. It comes from above,
- 15:32Speaker 6: you know.
- 15:32Speaker 1: It's beautiful.
- 15:36Speaker 4: I can't say anything like it's like what you would
- 15:43Speaker 4: expect when you're in his presence especially how you have
- 15:47Speaker 4: that you have the shades of blue and green but
- 15:52Speaker 4: that direct shade of yellow that is shining on her
- 15:56Speaker 4: face like he is like he's saying alright baby girl
- 16:00Speaker 4: I know.
- 16:00Speaker 1: You need me I know you need some answers but
- 16:03Speaker 1: here you go let me just wrap you up in
- 16:05Speaker 1: my presence and give you what you need. That's what
- 16:09Speaker 1: I'm getting from the cover.
- 16:11Speaker 6: That's it. You've got it, girl.
- 16:14Speaker 7: You are the interpreter of interpreters.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I love cover art. I love, when I read a book,
- 16:22Speaker 1: I tell people, I look at the cover before I
- 16:25Speaker 1: look at the synopsis. And people are like, Treece Willis says,
- 16:29Speaker 1: don't judge a book by its cover. Well, they weren't
- 16:32Speaker 1: talking to me because I'm going to do it. And
- 16:35Speaker 1: there are times when I'm wrong and I'm like, oh,
- 16:38Speaker 1: not too much. But it's a good chance. It's going
- 16:44Speaker 1: to grab me. So while we are here and we're
- 16:48Speaker 1: talking about your book, here is your chance to get
- 16:54Speaker 1: us know about Wisdom from Above.
- 17:00Speaker 7: Well, it's a devotional and it's a daily devotional. We've
- 17:06Speaker 7: heard about a lot of devotionals out there. And, you know,
- 17:10Speaker 7: there's many writers, many authors of devotional. But a devotional
- 17:14Speaker 7: is something that you're able to ponder, meditate, reflect. You're
- 17:20Speaker 7: able to see and identify, like, where is your life going?
- 17:25Speaker 7: You know, you're able to journal. And so parts of
- 17:28Speaker 7: this book, it really talks about how you the challenges
- 17:33Speaker 7: we face every day.
- 17:35Speaker 6: How can you live today? without breaking apart.
- 17:40Speaker 7: You know, I will say for myself, there's day 23.
- 17:44Speaker 7: It talks about friendship with God is demonstrated through loyalty, obedience,
- 17:49Speaker 7: and allegiance.
- 17:50Speaker 6: You know, day 24, your voice is not to be silenced.
- 17:55Speaker 7: You know, a lot of times we are silenced by
- 17:58Speaker 7: our problems. We are silenced by our identity crisis. And
- 18:02Speaker 7: I'm going to read day 24 for you. Because day 24,
- 18:06Speaker 7: I was a victim of being silenced. You know, the
- 18:11Speaker 7: saying was, oh, a girl, a woman should be heard,
- 18:16Speaker 7: seen and not heard.
- 18:17Speaker 6: And a lot of times that goes into the fact where.
- 18:20Speaker 7: Like, if you're an authority figure, you know, and you're
- 18:24Speaker 7: a child, you should not talk so much. But everyone
- 18:27Speaker 7: has a voice and God loves to hear our voice.
- 18:31Speaker 7: And many times we are silenced because of insecurity. We
- 18:34Speaker 7: are silenced because of depression. We're silenced because of.
- 18:39Speaker 6: Competition and inferiority.
- 18:43Speaker 7: And so I will go through day 24 and how
- 18:46Speaker 7: that helped me is because that as I journeyed through
- 18:50Speaker 7: my relationship with Christ and through my challenges of being suicidal,
- 18:55Speaker 7: being you know, depressed, postpartum depression, I had.
- 18:59Speaker 6: To come out of that silent.
- 19:03Speaker 7: Position that, listen, you have an identity, you can be confident,
- 19:08Speaker 7: you not be arrogant, but confident in that God has
- 19:11Speaker 7: made you a daughter, a royal diadem in his kingdom,
- 19:16Speaker 7: and you should not compare yourself like one of my
- 19:20Speaker 7: sisters in the faith says comparison is the teeth of
- 19:24Speaker 7: joy and much of us whether we are young middle-aged
- 19:31Speaker 7: or old we compare ourselves too much with other people
- 19:35Speaker 7: and it kills our our identity so like this the
- 19:39Speaker 7: voice of silence is golden in the mirror of truth
- 19:43Speaker 7: It says from James 119, Wherefore, my beloved, let every man.
- 19:47Speaker 6: Be quick to listen, slow to speak. and slow anger.
- 19:52Speaker 6: A lot of times we fill our voids with a
- 19:56Speaker 6: lot of chatter.
- 19:58Speaker 7: And chatter is not the same thing as having a
- 20:01Speaker 7: voice of authority. It says chatter is when you place
- 20:05Speaker 7: your ambitions over God's sovereignty, choosing your.
- 20:09Speaker 6: Perspective over his eternal truth. And that's different than silence.
- 20:15Speaker 7: Silence is when you're quiet enough to hear instructions, not
- 20:20Speaker 7: that you're talking loud above the instructions.
- 20:24Speaker 6: So chatter is a lot of noise. But silence has
- 20:28Speaker 6: acquired authority.
- 20:30Speaker 7: And so that makes a distinction when you're going through life.
- 20:34Speaker 7: And there are many of us like, oh, I'm in my.
- 20:37Speaker 6: 50s right now.
- 20:38Speaker 7: And a lot of the kids say to me, oh, miss,
- 20:40Speaker 7: you do not look as your age.
- 20:43Speaker 6: I don't tell them my age.
- 20:44Speaker 7: But, you know, many times you walk through and you
- 20:47Speaker 7: go through life with relationships or through business or through vision.
- 20:51Speaker 7: And you're like, OK, God. I don't have anything to say.
- 20:55Speaker 7: Why am I being picked on to talk about something?
- 20:59Speaker 7: I don't have the power to talk on that issue. But,
- 21:02Speaker 7: you know, we have power in our voice.
- 21:05Speaker 6: What types of chatter or noise are we overriding? Because
- 21:10Speaker 6: a lot of times we look for the opinions of
- 21:13Speaker 6: our friends, opinions.
- 21:14Speaker 7: About parents, not that parents don't have an opinion on
- 21:17Speaker 7: how to guide you, but when do you value yourself
- 21:21Speaker 7: enough to come up to the table and say, okay,
- 21:24Speaker 7: I can make a choice in how I conduct my life,
- 21:29Speaker 7: my finances, my business, my value of how I.
- 21:32Speaker 6: Hold my integrity.
- 21:35Speaker 7: And many times right now in the world, people are
- 21:38Speaker 7: not having integrity in their relationship. They don't have integrity
- 21:41Speaker 7: in business. They don't have integrity in their relationship with God.
- 21:45Speaker 6: They don't have integrity in how they conduct their child
- 21:49Speaker 6: for life. And so.
- 21:52Speaker 7: We look to other people to hold our integrity together.
- 21:56Speaker 7: But God is like, no, you have to go back
- 21:58Speaker 7: to the scriptures, go back to the.
- 22:00Speaker 6: Word of the Lord and really measure your life with scriptures.
- 22:04Speaker 6: Because if you.
- 22:07Speaker 7: No, if you're faking the funk, and a lot of
- 22:09Speaker 7: times we have this mask on and we're faking the funk,
- 22:14Speaker 7: and that's old school. We're faking the funk, but we
- 22:17Speaker 7: are not bringing our true self to the table, you know?
- 22:21Speaker 6: And our voice, true voice.
- 22:23Speaker 7: Is not being spoken because we are putting on an
- 22:27Speaker 7: image for someone else.
- 22:29Speaker 6: And so that's what Day 24 talks about.
- 22:32Speaker 1: You said so much. You said so much. It's crazy
- 22:41Speaker 1: because I remember having to speak to my daughter about
- 22:49Speaker 1: having a voice. She used to get bullied when she
- 22:54Speaker 1: was younger. And I had to tell her, I said,
- 22:57Speaker 1: you know what? The same way God gave everyone else
- 23:00Speaker 1: their voice, he's giving you your voice. And only person
- 23:03Speaker 1: who can speak up for You is you. And I say,
- 23:09Speaker 1: when you start to speak up for yourself, you will
- 23:12Speaker 1: see things start to happen. And she did it. I
- 23:15Speaker 1: remember getting a call from, they call it the behavior intervening.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Y'all know that word. Y'all know. Interventionist.
- 23:24Speaker 6: Yes.
- 23:25Speaker 1: There you go. And she was like, I saw the number.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I was like, what happened? She said, oh, no, no, no.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Nothing bad happened. I just want you to know your daughter.
- 23:34Speaker 1: spoke up for herself for the first time, and I've
- 23:37Speaker 1: never seen her done that. And she said, my mom
- 23:41Speaker 1: and my God. I said, okay, cool. I said, clock it.
- 23:43Speaker 6: Go ahead, boo.
- 23:45Speaker 1: But you're so right. So you gave us that nugget.
- 23:52Speaker 1: If there's one other day in the wisdom from above,
- 23:56Speaker 1: one other daily devotion that you could take for that,
- 23:59Speaker 1: that you would tell your readers this, This one I
- 24:04Speaker 1: need you to pay attention to. What other devotional day
- 24:08Speaker 1: would it be?
- 24:11Speaker 7: Well, the biggest one I think that's helped me and
- 24:15Speaker 7: is still helping me right now because, you know, you
- 24:19Speaker 7: have misunderstandings in your relationship, whether it be a husband-wife,
- 24:25Speaker 7: whether it be a platonic relationship with a friend, you know, daughter, mother,
- 24:32Speaker 7: you know, it's There's a lot of hurting issues that
- 24:36Speaker 7: people bring in relationships.
- 24:39Speaker 6: And they'll say, oh, the emotional baggage, right?
- 24:42Speaker 7: But this one, day 25, it says, love, the metamorphosis
- 24:47Speaker 7: to healing inexplicably. I look at that word and I'm
- 24:52Speaker 7: a genius with words, right?
- 24:54Speaker 6: I love playing with words.
- 24:55Speaker 7: And I think it's something God has given to me,
- 24:58Speaker 7: just like to learn to break words down and to.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Get in the word. Inexplicably means that it cannot be explained.
- 25:05Speaker 7: Sometimes we try to explain ourselves, explain our love, explain
- 25:10Speaker 7: our integrity, explain our identity to people.
- 25:13Speaker 6: And some things you just can't explain.
- 25:16Speaker 7: So love is that transformational piece that will heal us.
- 25:22Speaker 7: Bottom line, it just heals us. And if you learn
- 25:25Speaker 7: to forgive, love has forgiveness. It has letting go. It has, oh,
- 25:31Speaker 7: they say, oh, I can forgive but not forget. Love,
- 25:36Speaker 7: it wipes out some things that just you should not
- 25:40Speaker 7: even bring it up again and again. You can know
- 25:43Speaker 7: it truly when you have loved someone or loved yourself,
- 25:47Speaker 7: when you can't keep bringing up the issue over and
- 25:50Speaker 7: over again and bring it in the face of the
- 25:53Speaker 7: new situation. It's just like if you, you know, your
- 25:58Speaker 7: husband hurt you, you know, went out and cheated on you.
- 26:02Speaker 6: And, you know, that situation has a sting to it, right?
- 26:06Speaker 7: It says love is the redeeming character of God that
- 26:09Speaker 7: transforms open hearts and build godly trust. I've had trust issues.
- 26:15Speaker 6: All my life.
- 26:17Speaker 7: And my metamorphosis process, even with my mom, my dad,
- 26:21Speaker 7: I used to be very angry with my dad because
- 26:25Speaker 7: he was an absentee father. And I only got healed
- 26:31Speaker 7: through that relationship with that wound of a father when
- 26:35Speaker 7: I had to write a letter to him. I wrote
- 26:39Speaker 7: a letter to my father through the help of my
- 26:41Speaker 7: spiritual counselor. She was Jewish, and that's when I was
- 26:45Speaker 7: in New York. And I had to write the letter,
- 26:48Speaker 7: letting go all of that anger.
- 26:51Speaker 6: I was a very angry young girl.
- 26:54Speaker 7: And the Lord had to tell me, you're very angry,
- 26:57Speaker 7: you're very bitter, and you have to learn to love
- 27:00Speaker 7: your father.
- 27:01Speaker 6: Because he had his own voids and his own issues.
- 27:05Speaker 6: And he was trying to love you from a shallow
- 27:09Speaker 6: place that he did not have. He didn't have the capacity.
- 27:13Speaker 7: But if you keep on that wound of enabling that
- 27:17Speaker 7: wound of unforgiveness, how could you repair? And so I
- 27:22Speaker 7: had to say, love is the connection between heaven and
- 27:25Speaker 7: earth and binding the heart of God to your purpose.
- 27:29Speaker 7: And our purpose is to show up full. And a
- 27:33Speaker 7: lot of us don't show up full because we have
- 27:35Speaker 7: not engaged in the process of the healing process of love.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And that's true. A lot of us have not, have
- 27:45Speaker 1: not done that because we take situations from the past
- 27:52Speaker 1: and we bring them into the new thing and then
- 27:55Speaker 1: that new thing's become a situationship and then that doesn't
- 27:59Speaker 1: work and so then you're taking that and you're going
- 28:01Speaker 1: to the next one where you should have left it
- 28:03Speaker 1: back there so you are so right.
- 28:08Speaker 6: Yes And it affects our business life. It affects our
- 28:14Speaker 6: spiritual life.
- 28:15Speaker 7: It affects our day-to-day interaction, our careers.
- 28:20Speaker 6: Because you'll show up and you'll be toxic in your career.
- 28:26Speaker 7: And you'll be like, nothing is working for me in
- 28:31Speaker 7: my career.
- 28:32Speaker 6: Because you're bringing that part of you into the career. Facts. Facts.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Facts and you wonder why it's not working because you're
- 28:41Speaker 1: bringing that toxicity into something. Oh, girl. Let me ask
- 28:46Speaker 1: you a question. I really feel that this book can
- 28:54Speaker 1: be given to anyone. But who would you consider your
- 29:00Speaker 1: target audience for this book?
- 29:06Speaker 6: Well, I'll say.
- 29:09Speaker 7: families, and especially husbands and wives, and young adults that's
- 29:15Speaker 7: going through this metamorphosis of finding their identity. It's a
- 29:20Speaker 7: book for building your identity in Christ. And knowing your
- 29:26Speaker 7: journey in life, because we are so competitive. We live
- 29:31Speaker 7: in a society that's, oh, you know, if your name
- 29:34Speaker 7: is not in the spotlight or, you know, if you
- 29:36Speaker 7: don't have this much likes on your Facebook or this much.
- 29:40Speaker 7: Twitter or this much on your TikTok you know then
- 29:43Speaker 7: you're nothing and it really hones in on young adults
- 29:50Speaker 7: trying to find their place in the role in society
- 29:53Speaker 7: or their role in life and they feel that they're
- 29:56Speaker 7: out of place you.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Know It's so true because this generation that's coming in
- 30:04Speaker 1: literally are not able to stand on their own. They
- 30:11Speaker 1: are trending. They want clicks and likes and comments. If
- 30:20Speaker 1: no one comments and nobody talks about it, then I'm
- 30:25Speaker 1: the oddball. I'm the boring one.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Yes.
- 30:30Speaker 1: And to this day, my daughter does not do social
- 30:33Speaker 1: media because I do not want her to live her
- 30:37Speaker 1: life for the lights.
- 30:39Speaker 6: Yes. Yes. That's good. That's powerful.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I don't want her to do that. Even with me,
- 30:46Speaker 1: I may put out a post and no one may
- 30:48Speaker 1: like it. No one may say anything about it. That's
- 30:51Speaker 1: absolutely fine because it's something that I wanted to do.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I don't want her to say, oh, they like this,
- 30:58Speaker 1: so I need to do that again. No.
- 31:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 31:00Speaker 1: They don't like.
- 31:01Speaker 6: People are not showing up as their authentic self. Sorry
- 31:04Speaker 6: to cut you.
- 31:05Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 31:06Speaker 6: I'm sorry.
- 31:07Speaker 1: No, you go ahead, because you were about to say it.
- 31:09Speaker 7: Yeah, people not showing up as their authentic self, because
- 31:12Speaker 7: there's a lot of masking going on.
- 31:15Speaker 6: And we need to unmask ourselves.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Peel it back. Peel it back. For once in a lifetime.
- 31:23Speaker 6: It's like, yeah.
- 31:24Speaker 7: Be.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Be yourself. And I have to tell my daughter, don't
- 31:28Speaker 1: do things for other people. Be yourself, you know? And
- 31:32Speaker 1: so I tried to put her in a dress one day.
- 31:34Speaker 1: That was like the worst thing ever. And then I
- 31:38Speaker 1: had to, she's like, I don't like dress. I said,
- 31:39Speaker 1: but it's a dress. I don't like dress, but it.
- 31:42Speaker 1: And then something clicked in my mind saying, didn't you
- 31:45Speaker 1: tell her to be herself? She doesn't like you. And
- 31:48Speaker 1: I said, you know what? Well, let's find us a
- 31:50Speaker 1: nice little outfit. And then we go. And then I
- 31:54Speaker 1: had to realize that she's just not a dress girly.
- 31:57Speaker 1: So I call her my little sporty spice. My daughter is.
- 32:01Speaker 7: The same thing. She loves baggy pants. She loves ties.
- 32:07Speaker 7: She just being her, you know. And I used to
- 32:11Speaker 7: go through.
- 32:11Speaker 6: The same thing. Wearing a skirt. I bought her skirts.
- 32:14Speaker 6: I bought her leather skirts. I bought her this. The
- 32:17Speaker 6: girl don't want it. No, it's seven o'clock.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Sitting in the back of the closet, not even the front,
- 32:23Speaker 1: in the back of the closet, tucked behind everything. And
- 32:25Speaker 1: I'm like, why you don't weigh this? I don't like it.
- 32:30Speaker 6: Okay, cool.
- 32:31Speaker 1: But you're absolutely right. So there is a segment that
- 32:37Speaker 1: we have at SC Bookhouse and Friends, and it's called
- 32:40Speaker 1: the fun questions. So I'm going to put you back
- 32:42Speaker 1: in the hot seat real quick. And we're going to
- 32:45Speaker 1: do the fun questions. Now, the fun questions have to
- 32:49Speaker 1: do with music and television movies. And you may say, why?
- 32:59Speaker 1: When I work in the library and people ask me
- 33:04Speaker 1: for recommendations, I said, what is the last thing you've
- 33:08Speaker 1: looked at on TV? And they was like, why do
- 33:10Speaker 1: you ask that? I said, because what you look at
- 33:13Speaker 1: on TV is nine times out of 10 what you're
- 33:17Speaker 1: going to read. And they was like, I was like, yeah,
- 33:21Speaker 1: because the TV ain't nothing but the book and video.
- 33:25Speaker 6: So, okay.
- 33:27Speaker 1: So, welcome to the fun questions.
- 33:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:31Speaker 1: So, Lifetime called and they said, you know what? We
- 33:38Speaker 1: love your book, Wisdom from Above. And we love to
- 33:45Speaker 1: make it one of our weekly movies. But we have
- 33:52Speaker 1: to find individuals to play some of the parts. So
- 33:56Speaker 1: of course there has to be the leading lady in
- 34:00Speaker 1: the movie. Who would be the leading lady in your movie?
- 34:08Speaker 1: But here's a stipulation. She has to be an old
- 34:16Speaker 1: school gospel artist. So now when I say old school,
- 34:21Speaker 1: I'm talking about Yolanda Adams, CeCe Winans, Shirley Caesar, Albertina Walker,
- 34:29Speaker 1: them old school. So who would she be and why?
- 34:38Speaker 6: Well, I think I'd take it back to Shirley Caesar.
- 34:42Speaker 7: You know, she is such a gem. And she's such
- 34:46Speaker 7: a diamond in the rough. But she be bringing it hard.
- 34:51Speaker 7: She go gutso with the passion. And she's a fly
- 34:57Speaker 7: old school gal.
- 34:58Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying?
- 35:00Speaker 1: I love Shirley Caesar. She did this duet. And not
- 35:08Speaker 1: a lot of people listened to it. Did I think
- 35:10Speaker 1: this was Shirley Caesar trying to show her young side?
- 35:13Speaker 1: It was her and Ty Trebek. And it was like
- 35:16Speaker 1: some type of awards. And Shirley Caesar rapped. I was like, yo,
- 35:21Speaker 1: stop playing. And she was rapping with Ty Trebek. And
- 35:28Speaker 1: I was like, this is crazy. You bring it old
- 35:30Speaker 1: school and new school.
- 35:31Speaker 6: New school.
- 35:32Speaker 1: And you bringing it together. And you should see people,
- 35:34Speaker 1: audience like, oh, look at Shirley. She got some bars
- 35:38Speaker 1: on her. So I love Shirley. It's just something about her. Like,
- 35:45Speaker 1: I remember when Dolly Parton passed. Somebody said, somebody go
- 35:51Speaker 1: find Shirley. Somebody go find Patty. And they were naming
- 35:58Speaker 1: all these old school stuff. But where's Smokey? Where's Smokey at?
- 36:01Speaker 1: I said, y'all is so old.
- 36:05Speaker 6: You know, they got the power and the passion. And
- 36:07Speaker 6: they put the mic, drop the mic. They be dropping
- 36:10Speaker 6: the mic all the time. They just living up, you know?
- 36:14Speaker 1: And when she was with the caravan and she first
- 36:17Speaker 1: came out, I started looking at YouTube videos of that.
- 36:20Speaker 1: And I remember my grandma would always play to us
- 36:23Speaker 1: on Saturday night when we were getting ready for church.
- 36:26Speaker 1: To get ready for Sunday morning? Yes. Okay. So the
- 36:30Speaker 1: leading lady would be Shirley Caesar. But now we need
- 36:34Speaker 1: a leading man. So we had the ladies for the music.
- 36:38Speaker 1: But now your favorite. I don't like to say this,
- 36:44Speaker 1: but that is that one minister that you have to
- 36:48Speaker 1: stop and be like, listen here. What you say? Who
- 36:52Speaker 1: would that be?
- 36:55Speaker 6: So he has to be old school?
- 36:57Speaker 1: No, he does not have to be old school.
- 37:00Speaker 6: Okay. So, and then he has to be a minister?
- 37:05Speaker 1: Well, let's open this one up. Who would be your man?
- 37:11Speaker 6: Huh? I said, please, please, please.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Let's open.
- 37:16Speaker 6: It up. I don't want to put a restriction on it.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:20Speaker 6: Okay.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Who would be your male leading man? for your book?
- 37:28Speaker 7: Well, you know, as hot off the press, it has
- 37:31Speaker 7: to be Idris Elba, right?
- 37:33Speaker 1: See, look ahead, look ahead, look ahead. Look ahead. Fire
- 37:41Speaker 1: it up, man.
- 37:41Speaker 6: Fire it up.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. I don't know what God was thinking when
- 37:46Speaker 1: he made that man.
- 37:51Speaker 6: I know his wife out there listening. A method man?
- 37:56Speaker 1: He's hot off the press. Did you have another good
- 38:01Speaker 1: mood like that?
- 38:02Speaker 6: He got some depth to him. Yes, he does.
- 38:05Speaker 1: She was like, look, God, I don't know what type
- 38:08Speaker 1: of mood you were in that day, but can we
- 38:11Speaker 1: repeat that mood so we can get another one of him?
- 38:15Speaker 6: I know, I know, I know.
- 38:17Speaker 1: So we got Shirley Caesar as the leading lady. We
- 38:20Speaker 1: have Ildris Elba as the leading man. But of course,
- 38:25Speaker 1: all movies... have to have their theme song. That's title track.
- 38:33Speaker 1: What would you give the title track for your book?
- 38:38Speaker 1: And it can be any song, any genre.
- 38:43Speaker 7: Well, if we're taking it back old school and we
- 38:46Speaker 7: want to bring it into the new school, I got
- 38:49Speaker 7: to go with R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
- 38:52Speaker 6: That is what you want from me. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Show me
- 38:57Speaker 6: a little respect.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I understand. I got you. I got you. I see that.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I see that. Because when you get that one, that
- 39:08Speaker 1: what's sent from God. Once you got on that full armor,
- 39:11Speaker 1: the wisdom that he gave you, that peace of mind,
- 39:16Speaker 1: you have nothing but the command, the respect. They have
- 39:20Speaker 1: nothing but to give you that.
- 39:23Speaker 7: So.
- 39:26Speaker 1: You got it.
- 39:26Speaker 6: You got it. You got it. It is.
- 39:30Speaker 7: You know, it's nothing but just having that genuine in
- 39:36Speaker 7: identity and people just will value your life. You don't
- 39:39Speaker 7: even have to show up in the room and say
- 39:41Speaker 7: a lot. But when you just walk in the presence,
- 39:44Speaker 7: just you command the presence.
- 39:48Speaker 1: It is. So we got Shirley Caesar, leading lady. Ildeus Elba,
- 39:54Speaker 1: leading man. Respect, theme song. But of course, Lifetime said,
- 40:01Speaker 1: you know what? We got to put you in the movie.
- 40:03Speaker 1: We got to have somebody like you. And you know,
- 40:06Speaker 1: a lot of the authors just do cameos, okay? But
- 40:10Speaker 1: this time they said, you know what? We want somebody
- 40:13Speaker 1: to play you because this book here, we want to
- 40:16Speaker 1: sound like the words are coming from you. Who would
- 40:18Speaker 1: you give the honor to play you?
- 40:24Speaker 6: So I would give this to Raji Henson. Yes. Empire.
- 40:31Speaker 6: The Empire lady because she just bring it real.
- 40:35Speaker 7: She bring it home and she cuts no business to
- 40:39Speaker 7: tell it as it is.
- 40:41Speaker 1: She did not play with them in Empire. She can
- 40:46Speaker 1: go from nice nasty to cuddly to in charge to
- 40:55Speaker 1: the word that we don't say to offers but it
- 40:58Speaker 1: rhymes with which you guys know i'm talking about all
- 41:01Speaker 1: in one episode but you know what by the end
- 41:03Speaker 1: of that episode you respect her even.
- 41:05Speaker 6: More yes yes that's nightly so.
- 41:12Speaker 1: You did that girl You survived the fun questions. See
- 41:16Speaker 1: you another day.
- 41:19Speaker 6: You caught me. You caught me.
- 41:20Speaker 7: You caught me on the sidelines right there. I didn't
- 41:23Speaker 7: expect all of this, but I guess I have my
- 41:26Speaker 7: armor ready, prepared and fully loaded.
- 41:29Speaker 1: It's just a chance for the readers to see the
- 41:32Speaker 1: authors think off the top of their head. And I
- 41:34Speaker 1: will say you did a great job, Mikey. Thank you
- 41:38Speaker 1: so much. But before we leave, What would you like
- 41:42Speaker 1: to say to your readers that you already have, the
- 41:46Speaker 1: readers that you're going to gain, and the readers that
- 41:51Speaker 1: will see this in the future and be like, wow,
- 41:54Speaker 1: what would you want to say to them?
- 41:59Speaker 7: That, you know, we all going to life. We all
- 42:02Speaker 7: in this life together, we are life in. But remember this,
- 42:08Speaker 7: you know, the journey is not the final destination. You
- 42:12Speaker 7: are in this process and the Lord loves you.
- 42:16Speaker 6: The Lord is.
- 42:17Speaker 7: Looking to make you that gem that you was born for.
- 42:22Speaker 6: But let's get through all of the charcoal, the dirt.
- 42:28Speaker 7: And all of the grimy parts of life with some confidence.
- 42:33Speaker 7: Go to the word of the Lord. Go to your
- 42:36Speaker 7: identity and get to know Christ. Because with the crisis,
- 42:41Speaker 7: Christ helps to alleviate through the crisis.
- 42:46Speaker 6: The sting of the crisis.
- 42:48Speaker 7: And so take the journey, go through the process, but
- 42:52Speaker 7: pick up this book and get some wisdom.
- 42:56Speaker 6: Because without it, you will have.
- 42:58Speaker 7: No roadmap and you'll fall into a period of depression
- 43:03Speaker 7: if you don't have a roadmap. The Bible is your
- 43:06Speaker 7: basic instructions before leaving earth. We need wisdom. We cannot
- 43:11Speaker 7: function in life without it. So that's my leaving it
