- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So today we are talking about creativity, not being a straight
- 0:36line and it's not wasting time. So often I hear people tell me,
- 0:41well, I want to try this but I don't want to waste my time or I
- 0:45want to experiment with this, but I don't want to waste time.
- 0:48I can't tell you how many times I hear that and that's why I'm
- 0:51we're actually talking about because this week I probably
- 0:53heard it 5-6 times. And I can't stress enough how
- 0:58creativity is not a straight line.
- 1:01Everything in my life revolves around being able to be creative
- 1:04and do creative things. And I really work at it because
- 1:07it's something that fuels my soul and I can't express how
- 1:10much I love it. It's just, it's beyond words for
- 1:13me. But it's also experimental.
- 1:17It's also doing things and having them fail.
- 1:20It's also having the ability to recognize that it was not a
- 1:24waste of time. So as many of you who maybe have
- 1:27signed up for the newsletter know, I had a disaster in the
- 1:30garden with many of the things that went on this year.
- 1:33It was, you know, not at all what I had planned.
- 1:36And it's OK because the lesson is that you have to be able to
- 1:40pivot. You have to be able to look at
- 1:42it and say it was experiment. It was just the way we were
- 1:45trying things. It was the way I was approaching
- 1:47it and it's OK. Everything that I do that's
- 1:50creative, whether it's taking pictures or dealing with, you
- 1:54know, raising chickens or whatever, I'm always approaching
- 1:56it with the idea and the intent that it's not a straight line.
- 2:00I know it's going to be wiggly. I know it's going to be a
- 2:03hairball and messy and have things that work and things that
- 2:06don't work. And that's OK, because that's
- 2:09how it goes when you do this stuff.
- 2:12And when you're when you're trying new things, it's really
- 2:15easy to just want them to be able to succeed and be done
- 2:18quickly. But the problem with that is
- 2:21often you miss out on the good stuff.
- 2:24You miss out on the failure and the failure has good stuff
- 2:27because failure is part of success.
- 2:29Failure is part of creativity. Failure is part of learning to
- 2:32make something better. So I encourage you to actually
- 2:36fail and to recognize that the line is squiggly.
- 2:39You know, for those of you who remember Spirograph, that's kind
- 2:42of how I think of it. It's like you put something in
- 2:44there and it spins and it's like Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding,
- 2:47Ding, Ding, and you're making all these different weird lines.
- 2:49But when you pick up the tool off the page, there's this
- 2:52beautiful design. And that's what creativity does
- 2:55for you. That's what the experimentation
- 2:57does for you. That's what having the patience
- 3:00with it does. Now, what happens if it just
- 3:03continues to make you crazy in the process?
- 3:06So I I get that. I used to be that way.
- 3:09And now at every step along the way, I stop and I ask myself,
- 3:13and I actually take notes of this because I will write down
- 3:16here's where it was a success. Here's what was great.
- 3:19I debrief it and then I say, well, what could have been
- 3:21better? And then I say, OK, well, what
- 3:23did I learn? What did I take away so that I
- 3:25actually feel empowered by the process?
- 3:27And then I can say, what am I going to do different next time?
- 3:30So I've got a whole boatload of notes for what I'm going to do
- 3:32different next year in the garden.
- 3:34I've got a whole boatload of notes for how I want to handle
- 3:37flowers next year. All of it.
- 3:39It just makes it easier and makes more sense.
- 3:42So it, when you debrief yourself, you learn so much
- 3:45about how you think, how you see, and you can go back and
- 3:49debrief multiple times on multiple levels.
- 3:51There's never a time to say, oh, I'm done debriefing.
- 3:54OK, that was good. I'm done.
- 3:56Always remember, you have the option to keep going with that.
- 4:00You have the option to keep trying it over and over and over
- 4:03again because you'll find different things.
- 4:05The more you experiment with it, the more things you will find.
- 4:08So give yourself a shot. Try that.
- 4:12You know, I can only say this about it if you're feeling
- 4:16frustrated and you feel like you're wasting time.
- 4:20That's a point of view you don't have to keep.
- 4:23You just need to keep asking different questions and
- 4:25cultivate it. Understanding, yes, this is part
- 4:28of the process and keep pushing forward.
- 4:30The more you push forward, the better off you're going to be.
- 4:33OK my friends, I will see you tomorrow and I hope you have a
- 4:36creative blessed day. Bye.
