Transcript
- 0:16All right. Good afternoon.
- 0:17Welcome, boys. Gone way too soon.
- 0:18Tom Petty was so good. So good.
- 0:22Mallory Condon, welcome to the Iowa Sports Radio Network, 2
- 0:26hours of sports conversation followed by three more.
- 0:28The Dr. follows us in here from 21 till 5.
- 0:32Trent Condon and Ken Miller with you until 2O clock talking
- 0:35sports. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:37program. Scott Dockerman, we missed him
- 0:39yesterday, We'll get him today. Doc will join us here.
- 0:42Coming up at the bottom of the hour, I want to take a good long
- 0:45look at the PC wrote last week in the Athletic some of the
- 0:48bigger stories when it comes to college football.
- 0:53We'll talk to Doc about that, the 25 stories that changed
- 0:57college football since the year 2000.
- 0:59So Doc at the bottom of the hour onward we will go to hour number
- 1:05two and we will start with JT Gatlin from part of the Locked
- 1:08on Network covers the NBA at least till until Thursday.
- 1:12Well, he'll still cover it be 1 of the games I wouldn't assume,
- 1:15but we'll get into that as we'll talk NBA with JT Gatlin.
- 1:19I'll go round the the league a little bit.
- 1:21Nick. Still in search of their coach
- 1:24far down the list. I mean, if you're still knowing
- 1:27that, I don't know, 6, maybe 10 coaches have turned you down and
- 1:30you finally get to you. Are you excited to get that
- 1:32opportunity? We'll talk to Gatlin on NBA
- 1:35topics at One O 2 and then Bride Hendricks of the Iowa Swarm will
- 1:40join us at 1:25. Is he still in operation?
- 1:44We've Caker, Tom Caker kind of alluded to the fact on Friday
- 1:49that the swarm might be going away.
- 1:50So we'll go right to the horse's mouth and Brad Hynix has ran it
- 1:53since its inception. He'll join us at 1:25 to get the
- 1:56lay of the land there. I read a piece from Seth Davis.
- 2:00At least I read half the piece till it made me pay here this
- 2:03morning. One of the one of the new, many
- 2:05new sites that are out there and he can't subscribe to all of
- 2:08them, but he's and he makes a really good point.
- 2:11I thought that college athletes in the next couple of years are
- 2:16in for rude awakening because the the the upperclassmen that
- 2:21they will join in some cases are making X or have made all of
- 2:26this money at some point in their college career and it's
- 2:29going to be a significant cut in whatever their NAL.
- 2:32Is you. You believe that?
- 2:33I, I want to believe it because they're going to turn everybody
- 2:35in Trent. I mean when schools are going to
- 2:38be telling on each? Other So suddenly we're going to
- 2:41have Alabama and Penn State and Michigan and Ohio State and
- 2:46Florida and Florida State. Playing by the same rules,
- 2:49Trent. Uh huh.
- 2:50They're all going to be above the board.
- 2:52Yep, as they have been. Well, they weren't actually,
- 2:55when you come to think of. It, I mean, he's spinning a hell
- 2:57of a yarn. Well, it's I live in reality.
- 3:00I know. And the reality is?
- 3:01That people are going to cheat. It's going to be cheating, Yeah,
- 3:03it'll be rampant. And I think the proof will be in
- 3:05the pudding when the SEC starts knocking off College Football
- 3:09Playoff titles again. But his point, at least legally,
- 3:15these guys are going to be in for rude awakening.
- 3:17Well, guess what? They'll be fine.
- 3:19Yeah, I think so. I think so.
- 3:20There'll be a lot of those. Go back to the golden handshake
- 3:22days or maybe behind this this building.
- 3:25And are all, you know what, We'll find a way to get you the
- 3:28dough. And.
- 3:28Duffel bag on the front door, Mom and Dad's doorstep, and away
- 3:31we go. But anyways, we'll talk to Brad
- 3:34Heinrichs. So is it your understanding that
- 3:37the swarm is kaput? No, it's still, it's still an
- 3:39operational. Keiko was wrong.
- 3:41I, I don't think that's what Tom said.
- 3:43What Tom said, at least the way that I heard it, is that the
- 3:47university is separating themselves away from it.
- 3:50So Beth Getz was was hand in hand with the swarm.
- 3:56She's she was the. Beginning, she was a more
- 3:58willing. Than Barto.
- 4:00Than Barto was absolutely. And has she distanced herself
- 4:03from the swarm a little bit? I don't know if that would be
- 4:06the terminology that I understand it well.
- 4:09I'm going to ask Brad if he understands.
- 4:11Exactly. And that's why I think it's
- 4:14really important to talk to him because this is completely
- 4:17different that $20.5 million that we continue to hear about.
- 4:22That's not going to be enough. I.
- 4:23Don't think it is either. And if the University of Iowa,
- 4:26if they believe that it is that that 20, because everybody
- 4:30again, living in that fantasy land, that everybody's going to
- 4:32be above board and that 20.5 everybody's going to play by the
- 4:35same set of rules and we're fine.
- 4:37And we don't need Iowa Swarm. We don't need their efforts and
- 4:41what they're doing because we got our twenty and a half
- 4:44million dollars. Guess what?
- 4:45University of Iowa athletic department you're in deep
- 4:47trouble. Yeah, I don't think you're going
- 4:49to be able to keep up with the Joneses or in this case the
- 4:51Wolverines or the Buckets or the Mindy lines or dot dot dot dot
- 4:54dot dot dot the align eye. I mean, look what they're doing.
- 4:57So in your number one, one starts in the fiscal year of
- 4:592000, July 1st for 2025, going for the next 12 months.
- 5:04That's when we hear that $20.5 million figure.
- 5:07However, Texas Tech's estimated overall budget what 50, five,
- 5:12$55 million. 'Cause they grandfather deals in
- 5:15so this year, right? Does the University of Iowa
- 5:18athletic department believe that they have an extra 35 and not
- 5:21even 35, an extra $15 million? Is that a fair number to throw
- 5:26out there on top of the 20 1/2 that they can play with every
- 5:29single year? I mean, if they do, more power
- 5:30to them. But so you're saying they're
- 5:33going to have to get it from somewhere, right?
- 5:35And that the swarm will be very much alive.
- 5:37Could it become internal? That's what we're hearing more
- 5:40and more. Is these instead of the
- 5:41collectives with an outside entity?
- 5:43Well. Bloom is going to work by the
- 5:45sounds of things when he joins us for this last Tuesday.
- 5:47I think yes, he basically said that he's going to be the We
- 5:51Will Collective will be a thing until the end of the year and
- 5:55then sounds like his job is changing.
- 5:58But it'll be very similar, it'll just be instead of in its own
- 6:02entity. His paycheck will come from
- 6:04somewhere. Else it'll be through the Iowa
- 6:05State University athletic department.
- 6:07What do they call with all the other things that are up, that
- 6:10it'll be under that umbrella? We'll see what this means for
- 6:14the sword. And, and you don't think that
- 6:16the fear 'cause I mean, they, they talked a good game.
- 6:19They, when, when the, when the fear of God was, you know, put,
- 6:24put into schools, at least that was the goal.
- 6:28They talked about some penalties that you don't even want to
- 6:32think about. Like you have no idea how harsh
- 6:34this is going to be. Loss of scholarships, loss of
- 6:37eligibility. I mean they by the sounds of
- 6:41things, they're going to not the death penalty.
- 6:44I mean that's, that's as severe as severe could be, but they're
- 6:47going to go right up to that level.
- 6:51You don't buy that for a second. I don't, I, I don't believe if
- 6:55we find out that the biggest football programs in the country
- 6:58right away are cheating, that they're going to be
- 7:00heavy-handed. So then what?
- 7:02Then we're right back to where we were.
- 7:03So. So is this obviously a failure?
- 7:05Then of course, yeah, well, it's going to be.
- 7:08And all and all of this work that went into it and all of
- 7:10this time that went into it and this house settlement that
- 7:13everybody was waiting for is a lot to do about nothing.
- 7:17Basically. Good God.
- 7:18I mean, that's how I see it. Am I?
- 7:22Am I out of bounds with that thought line of thinking though?
- 7:24I hope you are because I it was it was getting out of hand and
- 7:29and it needed to be reined in and and I hate when you know,
- 7:33it's it's the politicians that get involved, but I don't know
- 7:36who else it. Could be right?
- 7:37Well, and they've been begging for politicians for help.
- 7:39Involved because take it off our plate.
- 7:42I mean, we can't have this. They went to Supreme Court, a
- 7:44divisive Supreme Court, as we've seen in 200 years.
- 7:47They got their asses kicked. I mean, they can't get 9.
- 7:50Nothing with that Supreme Court with anything except when the
- 7:52NCAA came to help us out. Yeah, what you guys are doing is
- 7:56unconstitutional. You can't do these things.
- 7:58They are. What you have is not the way
- 8:02that business needs to be run. Can we go back to the old days?
- 8:05We just, we watch games, we talk about games.
- 8:07Head in the same we. Preview games and maybe?
- 8:09We're going to be there. Guess what?
- 8:11Come August, we will be right back.
- 8:12But I but I know it, but it's but still, I mean that this is
- 8:15not going away. I don't think we'll we'll see
- 8:17how plays out, but anyways, we saw how the NBA played out last
- 8:20night. This was a 2 point game with 8
- 8:231/2 minutes left. Yes and the Pacers were getting
- 8:27there. You know what's kicked?
- 8:28I mean getting the you know what's kicked.
- 8:30And as they've done time after time after time, here they come
- 8:34and they mounted that comeback and they got it to within two.
- 8:38And I don't remember who shot the ball but missed.
- 8:41And then Hartenstein got the rebound, offensive rebound.
- 8:45He threw it back up and he missed loose ball and it fell
- 8:48into yet another one of the thunders hands.
- 8:51They passed it around. Boom 3.
- 8:54Jason Wallace had that huge stretch and that.
- 8:56At that point, unbelievable he was 3.
- 8:59Pointer steel goes from 2:00 it's up to 7 and in a blink of
- 9:02and I swear I looked at that score bug.
- 9:05I mean my eyes darted there like 12 times in a row.
- 9:07No, it's not 15, it's not 50, it's just two.
- 9:10Who you trying to kid? Like doing the math in my head,
- 9:13but did I miss something? Did they screw?
- 9:15But that's how quick it was. Went from here we go, we got a
- 9:19ball game after. You're right.
- 9:20And the Pacers look dreadful for long stretches.
- 9:23And is it? Is Halliburton hurting his team?
- 9:25I know he's hurt. Yeah, no.
- 9:27Do you play him? I think so.
- 9:29I mean, what? What are you going to do?
- 9:30McConnell. OK, you can still play him
- 9:32together. I mean, you want more Ben
- 9:35Shepard out there? I don't know if there's.
- 9:36I don't know if they have an answer.
- 9:38They don't And and because of that, you want more?
- 9:40I don't know, I guess you could give some more minutes.
- 9:44Trent if, if, if Halliburton and and I don't see a miraculous
- 9:48recovery. You know by.
- 9:49Thursday night they don't have prayer, right?
- 9:52They don't have a prayer. I mean, Siatkin could only do so
- 9:55much and thank God he got going in there.
- 9:57I mean, he was terrible in the first.
- 9:58He was a turnover machine in the 1st 12 minutes of that
- 10:02basketball game. And then to me, Nemhart down the
- 10:05stretch was just God awful, turning the ball over, missing
- 10:08shot after shot after shot. I thought we were going to be in
- 10:11for another one of these all time finishes.
- 10:13Not necessarily the patients were going to win it, but this
- 10:16is going to be a last second, you know, last possession type
- 10:18wins basketball game because they kept cutting, kept cutting.
- 10:21Then they Keith Underwood, you know, extended to 7 or 9 and
- 10:25here come the Pacers again. But after that, it seemingly got
- 10:28away and it never came back. Can all be tapping?
- 10:30Please stop shooting 3 pointers. Yeah, please.
- 10:32Right. What was he is?
- 10:33Did he make one? Made one?
- 10:34I know he made one. So I was going to look he shot
- 10:3840% from three last year. That seems impossible.
- 10:41That thing is hideous. But that repeatable motion?
- 10:44Yeah, I saw something in an NBA game I don't think I've ever
- 10:47seen last night. I don't think I've ever seen it
- 10:49before. Adam Silver courtside.
- 10:52No she not OK. A foul on a jump ball I.
- 10:57Have seen that before, but it's a rarity.
- 10:59Yeah, it's a rarity. Yeah.
- 11:00And, and did it was kind of the right call.
- 11:03Oh yeah, absolutely. I mean, McConnell grabbed SGA's
- 11:06wrist, but you never see that call.
- 11:09And you do it every single time. Now this is something I remember
- 11:12in either 7th or 8th grade. Basketball, you're taught this,
- 11:16and especially you are because you're 5-6 right now, at the
- 11:19time, maybe 55. I never had, I had to worry
- 11:21about jump balls because it was just before a game.
- 11:23And if we went to overtime, that was only time jump balls, just
- 11:26alternating possession. But I remember taking our coach,
- 11:29taking the bigs over there and he was teaching how to hook, how
- 11:32to get when you're going up, if you're going to guy that jumps a
- 11:34lot higher, you do this. If you're taller than this guy,
- 11:37you do this. The different things that are
- 11:39out there because it is crazy watching an NBA game and seeing
- 11:43the physicality on a jump ball because we're we're college
- 11:47basketball fans. When do we see a jump ball?
- 11:49Start. That's it, you know.
- 11:51And it overtime, you know, which is once every 15 games, you
- 11:54know, that's all we see jump balls.
- 11:56And because of that, I think us as college basketball fans
- 11:59bigger than the NBA don't realize, yeah, they're doing all
- 12:02those dirty tricks every single time.
- 12:04And every once in a while you can call.
- 12:05It it was a great it was a great camera angle because McConnell
- 12:08was incredulous. They can't believe this is
- 12:10happening. The commentator never see this.
- 12:13But then they showed the replaying.
- 12:14Yeah, I mean, he did, but it's just odd.
- 12:18But it wasn't odd that that it's SGA that is the benefactor of
- 12:22the call because he's the benefactor seemingly of a lot of
- 12:25calls. Here's his free throws and I
- 12:27know he gets to the rim and he's going to get fouled.
- 12:29But my good got the number of free throws that SGA has shot in
- 12:34these playoffs. It's like, what was the number
- 12:37167 free throws he shot? And the next guy in the entire
- 12:44regular season, there were two guys at the top 159 and that's
- 12:49the regular season. And and, and SJ shot 167 in the
- 12:55playoffs. But you know, he gets to the
- 12:56basket, he draws contact. But again, I don't recall, I
- 13:01don't think I've ever seen it on a jump ball where he fouled his
- 13:04call. But you look at the look at the
- 13:06video and it's it's clear, as clear as day.
- 13:08So been hearing the last couple years about Jalen Williams and
- 13:11the weird thing was. God, was he ever something?
- 13:13He was so good last night and I mean the thing before he forced
- 13:16him, right, He was pretty limited player.
- 13:18He forced him right? You could gobble him up and then
- 13:21he worked in the offseason to build himself into this.
- 13:23But the weird thing was because they had two Jalen.
- 13:26Williams Two. Yes.
- 13:28Yes. And maybe it was because of
- 13:30that, just I, because I'd hear Jalen Williams.
- 13:32I'm like, well, I don't follow the NBA enough.
- 13:34I don't know which Jalen Williams is.
- 13:35And maybe I just tuned it out. They still do have two Jalen.
- 13:38Williams. And the other one just doesn't
- 13:40play as much. But initially they're kind of
- 13:41playing about the same amount of minutes.
- 13:43They were different kind of players, but I don't know what
- 13:46it was. Different spellings of the first
- 13:47name I. Remember that one has AY, this
- 13:49one is just J Allen JALEN. But this Jalen Williams, he
- 13:55just, he's a bulldozer. But then hearing him talk
- 13:58afterwards, I mean, he talks like just a 40 year old veteran
- 14:01that's been in the league for 18 years.
- 14:03He's so sharp, so smart, just knows exactly what to say.
- 14:07I had to do it again last night. My wife, a whole tech guy, 2424
- 14:12years old now. He hasn't been in the league for
- 14:142 decades. 14 to. 25 Jalen Williams was last night 14 to
- 14:182540 points. He's turned himself into another
- 14:22stud. Where did he go to school?
- 14:24Santa Clara, Of course he did. That was another one last night.
- 14:28Where did he go? Oh, right.
- 14:29Santa Clara, of course. Yeah, he was in the WCC.
- 14:31Oh. Sure, out of sight, out of mind.
- 14:34Right out of sight out of mind. Let's get Joe in here.
- 14:36He wants to a pint on his Thunder as they are one game
- 14:39away from a parade. Hello, Joe, How are you?
- 14:43I'm pretty good. Well, so far I'm pretty.
- 14:45Good. I bet you are about about.
- 14:48Jalen Williams, he's a military brat.
- 14:49They're held. Oh, is he?
- 14:51Yeah, so, I mean, they you don't want to stereotype it.
- 14:54They are held to higher standards as kids.
- 14:57And you know, here's the unprecedented thing.
- 14:59I brought this up this morning. They're on the verge of winning
- 15:03the title with four first round draft picks next week.
- 15:08Yeah, all outside the lottery. Lottery, right, But one real
- 15:11close to it. Is that what I understand?
- 15:13I understand. I.
- 15:14Think I think their first pick is the next step outside the.
- 15:18Lottery pick 13. Yeah, and it was, it was crazy
- 15:23as he looked back, have the Clippers not made the play in
- 15:26it? They would have had the Clippers
- 15:27lottery pick. Oh my God, so it was a protected
- 15:31pick and that's the only reason he don't have.
- 15:33It and then. There's a stat that was brought
- 15:35up last night you got you got to be able to shut down Jalen
- 15:39Williams and SGA and it's impossible to do it really.
- 15:42Is. There's a stat last night where
- 15:45they combined with assist and points for 103 total points last
- 15:50night. What do you?
- 15:51What do you do with? That you're nothing.
- 15:53You're you're you're cooked. You're cooked.
- 15:55I mean, so it's like, is Jalen Williams Scottie Pippen or is he
- 16:00better? Is Jalen Williams, Is Jalen
- 16:03Williams a guy that could go to any other team and be a starter
- 16:07right out the gate? And also, I want to bring
- 16:09something else up. This is the second time in this
- 16:11playoffs that there's been a foul on a jump ball.
- 16:14Is it Jaron? Yeah.
- 16:15Jaron Jackson in the first round did it to Lou Dort.
- 16:18And when I was watching it, I'm like, you are you are 9 inches
- 16:22taller than Lou Dort. How did you foul him on the
- 16:24jump? Yeah, I didn't see that.
- 16:26I must not have been watching it at the time.
- 16:28I I don't recall that, but I I mean, last night just jumped off
- 16:31the TV. But you know what?
- 16:32It was right? McConnell got him.
- 16:36You know, and All in all, there's been good calls and
- 16:39there's been horrible calls and it's gone both.
- 16:41Ways, yeah, No, I don't disagree.
- 16:43There's been ones that are like, OK, that's a flagrant, but that
- 16:45one, that one wasn't called, but that one was called.
- 16:48It's been ridiculous, but it's actually been fair ridiculous
- 16:51both ways. Joe, Congrats on the win last
- 16:53night. I don't think we're going to see
- 16:55any basketball this weekend, but we shall see.
- 16:57Obviously, Thursday, unless Scott Foster gets the
- 17:00assignment, the great extender, we may get a Game 7.
- 17:03Joe, appreciate. It I'll call you Friday
- 17:05regardless. All right, see, man, good to
- 17:07hear from you. There's Joe on the Thunder.
- 17:09Our resident Thunder fan. You know what, I kind of hope
- 17:12Foster does get these. Yeah, spread this thing out.
- 17:15So when would Game 7 be Sunday? Got to be right.
- 17:17They would do Sunday. Unlike the NHL, who if there is
- 17:20a Game seven, you know what it is, it's Friday night.
- 17:23Yeah, I do, because you're. Talking on vacation, right?
- 17:26I do know that. But who, if you do get to that
- 17:29point, who crowns your championship on a front?
- 17:32It's the worst night of TV. Isn't Saturday worse?
- 17:35I don't think so. I think Saturday prime time is
- 17:37worse than Friday prime time. Maybe it's it's an inch either
- 17:40way, but a Friday night. Well, the thing about Friday is
- 17:44you've got Saturday and Sunday. By the time Monday rolls around,
- 17:47it's out of my nobody's talking about that.
- 17:49He forgot about it, right. That was all the way back on
- 17:51Friday. Nobody wants to regurgitate
- 17:53that. But I don't think we're going to
- 17:55get there. Do we get to a Game 7?
- 17:58What's the most likely game seven?
- 18:00I I think I've switched. You have, I believe I have and
- 18:04I'm not saying it's going to happen.
- 18:06I think the Pacers. Crowd along with those role
- 18:09players, they can still steal one even with a limited Tyrese
- 18:12Halliburton. I still believe in them doing
- 18:15that. But I guess we only need one
- 18:17game on the other side. We need just one game on both
- 18:20sides. I I just like Florida a lot
- 18:23tonight. I do too.
- 18:25I'm going to preface it by saying that.
- 18:28Well, we're talking about winning.
- 18:29We're talking about yeah. Hockey does feel, in general,
- 18:32more of a coin flip. Although when you're in Game 6
- 18:37and your season is on the line and you had to decide this
- 18:40morning who your goalie's going to be, that's not optimum.
- 18:44No, they're going back to Skinner.
- 18:46They're going back to Skinner. The.
- 18:47More talented of the two. Guess I think that's probably
- 18:50the right move. I don't know if there is a right
- 18:51move. I really don't.
- 18:53Is there anything they can do this offseason?
- 18:55We talked about I was reading that article about them being
- 18:57kind of in salary cap health starting next year.
- 19:00Is there anything they can do behind the net or is it just?
- 19:03Overdraft A goalie. I, I, I mean, and, and rookies.
- 19:07Rookie goalies aren't worth the crap.
- 19:09It takes a while, a couple of years.
- 19:11Well, maybe if it is they're. 18 I don't know what they have in
- 19:13their farm system. Yeah.
- 19:14I mean, maybe if it is that you're very limited in terms of
- 19:17that, that's what you do. You go young and you just hope
- 19:20that one of those guys in the next two or three years,
- 19:23suddenly when you're able to build back up because of the
- 19:25salary cap, then you're ready to go.
- 19:28I don't know. Yeah, got to pay a lot of guys.
- 19:30Got to pay a lot of guys. Like Florida a lot tonight?
- 19:32I do too, Trent. I don't think there's going to
- 19:34be a Game 7, but if I had to pick one, I would go hockey
- 19:39McDavid and dry Seidel. But again, I'm grabbing at
- 19:43straws. I really think I am.
- 19:45I don't think we're going to get either one of them.
- 19:47I don't. So one more on the local front
- 19:50before we hit the brake, OK. And in the past 24 hours, yes,
- 19:54both Iowa and Iowa State have lost their quarterbacks for the
- 19:57class of 2000. 12 has landed in Tuscaloosa.
- 20:01That's now this has been rumbling for a while.
- 20:04Well, as soon as he got the offer to visit and he was
- 20:08starting to flirt a little bit. I mean, you have to understand
- 20:11that, right? Yes.
- 20:12And even though the his sound bite or his statement makes it
- 20:16sound a little prickly, I mean, he's not lying when he says he's
- 20:20got a chance to play with more guys that are going to play at
- 20:23the next level. That's just a point of fact,
- 20:25right? Yeah, look at the number of
- 20:26NBANFL players that are from Alabama and compared to Iowa
- 20:30State. It's reality.
- 20:32Right. I mean, it's just, it sounds
- 20:34like I say it sounds a little prickly.
- 20:35Oh, you did you have to say that?
- 20:37But it's true. It's true.
- 20:39So that is back to the drawing board for Iowa State.
- 20:43Iowa's had a commitment from Cash Ferrera for what, 8 months?
- 20:46Something like that? So when he committed refresh my
- 20:49memory. Was this a really good get?
- 20:51He didn't have a ton of big offers.
- 20:53I think he had a UCLA offer. He had a UCLA offer, I think
- 20:56just from the West Coast that was foregoing the right the the
- 21:00Big 10 team on the West Coast. I thought that was kind of.
- 21:02Strange now. Also remember though, it was a
- 21:03new coaching staff, so probably didn't have a real deep
- 21:06relationship with that previous coaching staff.
- 21:08But this is somebody that Tim Lester identified early, really
- 21:11liked him. Now they go back to the drawing
- 21:13board. So Iowa State is looking at a
- 21:16guy that what has a Tulsa offer? Arkansas State, UNLV in Arkansas
- 21:21State, Georgia Tech as well. Georgia Tech, where I was trying
- 21:25to looking at maybe flipping a kid that's committed to Ball
- 21:28State, how quickly the world's have changed quarterback
- 21:31recruiting for Iowa and Iowa State.
- 21:32Yeah, for sure. Now, were they the only
- 21:34quarterbacks that that both schools had committed at this
- 21:37point? Well, yes, now I know Iowa was
- 21:39going after a couple others. One kid, Peyton, was it Falzone,
- 21:43something like that. He ended up committing to Penn
- 21:46State, but they brought him in a visit.
- 21:48A week later, he gets a offer from Penn State.
- 21:50He's a Pennsylvania kid, you know where he's going.
- 21:53Iowa told Herrera that they were recruiting 2 freshman
- 21:57quarterbacks in this class. He knew that.
- 22:00I don't know if, though, one guy started to come on visits this
- 22:03spring, if that's where he decided he was going to start to
- 22:06look around a little bit. More did.
- 22:07He may just want to stay closer to home.
- 22:08Maybe. Well, Indiana sounds like his
- 22:10next destination. Oh God.
- 22:11Now I know you're Canadian, but I know.
- 22:14Yeah, that part. Do you know that part?
- 22:15Yeah, yeah. Indiana even further away than
- 22:18San Diego, but it could be something as simple as that.
- 22:22But I was said they're going to. Here's the thing, though, with
- 22:25both of these Jet Tamala Cash, Herrera with quarterback.
- 22:30Recruiting with cool names though.
- 22:31Talk about. In the Portal era, are those
- 22:35guys going to play? Yeah.
- 22:37Wonder. You know, it just it kind of
- 22:39feels like the days of recruiting a quarterback.
- 22:43And miss at this lady. And now what?
- 22:46But. Then develop 123 years and by
- 22:51the time he's a red shirt junior he's going to stick around and
- 22:54take over until stays dead. They are.
- 22:56You're 100% right. It's so much.
- 22:58It's not not so much easier. It's completely easy to move.
- 23:02You're free to do so. You're free to move about the
- 23:04country, as they say on Southwest.
- 23:07But you, you only got $20.5 million to go around.
- 23:09So that's it. That's it.
- 23:11Above the board, above the board.
- 23:13God, I hope it stays that way. What's?
- 23:16It like to live in that reality. But they, yeah, I know they said
- 23:20the right things are probably not going to do the right thing.
- 23:22Scott Dockerman, next, he will join us.
- 23:25We'll talk, well, maybe about this topic, amongst other things
- 23:27with Doc. I do want to get into what I
- 23:29thought was a really good piece and, and that was his college
- 23:34football and how things have changed.
- 23:36The top. Was it 25 or 20 stories, 25
- 23:39stories that changed college football since 2000, got a lot
- 23:44of pushback? Do you remember when he
- 23:46previewed this with us and he said that the one story that's
- 23:50not in there that he's anticipating that he is going to
- 23:52get a lot of pushback. He didn't include the Penn State
- 23:56right to send Dusky's story. And he said in advance, I know
- 24:00I'm going to take a lot of Flack for leaving that out and reading
- 24:04the comments to his piece that was published on June the 10th.
- 24:07Well, Doc was right. He took a lot of Flack for for
- 24:10leaving that out. You read the comments.
- 24:13Yeah, some of them Gross. No, some of them Miller and
- 24:16Condon. I read Twitter too and it's the
- 24:18Irish Sports Radio Network. I just passed 12:30 on a
- 24:26Tuesdays Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 24:29Trent and I with you until 2. The drive coming up at that
- 24:33point Heather and Lucas 2 until 5 overtime Iowa 5 to 6.
- 24:38Scott Dockerman joins us writes for the Athletic.
- 24:41We're going to jump into his piece here right away.
- 24:43The changes the 25 changes that shook college football Before we
- 24:48do that Doc good to talk to you as always.
- 24:50I see that he was reading a piece earlier from my one of the
- 24:53Yahoo National College football ball writers, essentially what
- 24:56you wrote a year ago about the change to the calendar.
- 25:00You had some good points back then and I think that they were
- 25:02amplified in another piece here today.
- 25:05And the points remain the same. Just you know what we what might
- 25:08may lie ahead and how this thing could shift.
- 25:11But let's get into the piece you wrote on June the 10th Doc.
- 25:13It was, I thought it's great debate, right?
- 25:17It's great fodder as to what's over ranked, what should have
- 25:20been in there. What were you surprised to see
- 25:22in there? I guess just your thoughts on
- 25:25maybe some of the feedback that you got from the article.
- 25:28There were certainly some big ones that you know as you as you
- 25:30scroll through it. Oh gosh, I forgot all about
- 25:32that. That really did reverberate and
- 25:35change the landscape of the sport.
- 25:39You know, I, I guess it's, it's an interesting exercise because
- 25:45you know, it games are, are one thing you can kind of go back
- 25:49and go on the schedules and, and remember who won the national
- 25:52title and what game was great and, or same thing with coaches
- 25:56or teams and, and what have you. But when you start to look at
- 26:01things and developments that you know have changed over the last
- 26:0425 years, you really have to take a lot of things into
- 26:07consideration. And, and among them is, you
- 26:11know, just how much weight do you give a scandal?
- 26:14How much weight do you give things such as, you know, fun
- 26:18things, you know, like the video game versus how much you know,
- 26:22does pay to play and his ransom portal matter in the big
- 26:25picture? So it was it was an interesting
- 26:28exercise. It took me a long time to go
- 26:30through it, try to figure out what what mattered and what
- 26:33didn't, and ultimately kind of compiled that list.
- 26:37One of the more recent ones that that is interesting and I wonder
- 26:40when we look back and we get to you know, 2050 and we put the 50
- 26:45together of on this list where Connor Stallions is going to
- 26:49sit, it impacted Iowa. I mean you go back to two of
- 26:53those games, the Big 10 championship game and the
- 26:55regular season matchup where boy, Michigan had a great time
- 26:58getting the quarterback pretty easily throughout that one.
- 27:02How we remember Connor Stallions because it is so close when
- 27:05we're talking about a 25 year period, but we look maybe with a
- 27:08little deeper understanding and look back of it, of that Conor
- 27:11Stallion situation. There's a lot to that Conor
- 27:15Stallion situation. I mean, that the upset nature of
- 27:18Big 10 opponents really, you know, I've talked to some of
- 27:22them, I've written about it and I mean, it lingers.
- 27:25I mean, they are not happy about what happened and how it
- 27:28transpired because I mean, there were situations where they had,
- 27:32you know, they knew what was coming and, you know, he was
- 27:35standing next to a coordinator and they would point to the sky
- 27:39if it was going to be a pass or point to the ground if it was
- 27:41going to be a run. And when you're on 3rd down and
- 27:44you're going to get that defense with Aiden Hutchinson, David
- 27:47Ojabo and some of the other players, if they know what's
- 27:50coming, that is going to impact that play significantly.
- 27:53Make your, you know, difficulty so much heightened.
- 27:57And, and so that, you know, they knew it.
- 27:59And he did a really, you know, interesting job of figuring out
- 28:03the, the, the, the signals and everything.
- 28:06And and I would say with Iowa in in Indianapolis, the outcome
- 28:11when the mattered, I think the score might have mattered.
- 28:14But you know, it Kinnick Stadium, that might have been a
- 28:17different I don't know, that might have had a shot at a
- 28:19different outcome. And Connor Stallions was given
- 28:22the game ball after that game in the pink locker room.
- 28:25So that was what, 2714 and they Iowa wins a lot of those games
- 28:32against good teams, you know, top five teams at Kennick and it
- 28:35had that same kind of aura, but they they were a play ahead of
- 28:39Iowa every single snap. So that one might have been
- 28:42closer. I'll just say that.
- 28:44Number 9 was the one that stuck with me.
- 28:46I remember 2000, I think it was 2010, the whole the, the, the
- 28:51merger that we're on the cusp of it's, it's Oklahoma and it's
- 28:54Texas and they're going to the PAC 12 and no, wait a SEC.
- 28:57I remember leaving work on that Friday, think the Big 12 was
- 29:00absolutely dead. There was number saving it.
- 29:02We know what happened. It was saved for a little while
- 29:04with Oklahoma and Texas is still, it's still fine and still
- 29:07lingers to this day. But then further down the list,
- 29:11it does more than linger, by the way, it's still very much in
- 29:14operation. But the the one that's just
- 29:16still to this day is it's just when you read it, it's just
- 29:18shocking that the PAC 12 is gone.
- 29:21I mean, that's number three on your list, the PAC 12 of all of
- 29:24the power conferences, Doc. And I don't know, maybe it was
- 29:27just the Rose Bowl tie in. It just seemed like if you know
- 29:30that there's no way that this conference is not going to be
- 29:33around once we get to 2024, that's not going to happen.
- 29:37No way, no how. Right, because I was in Kansas
- 29:43City the day it all kind of blew up when Orange Bloods reported
- 29:47about the PAC 16. And it looked like the PAC 12
- 29:50was going to take the, at least the, the heavy hitters away from
- 29:54the, the Big 12. And you know, they, they took
- 29:57Colorado and ultimately Utah from Mountain West.
- 30:00But but that seemed like it was more likely to, to RIP apart the
- 30:05Big 12 than it was with the PAC 12.
- 30:07And I guess what you know, you could kind of say, you know,
- 30:11ruined it. I mean, poor leadership.
- 30:14I mean, you got to start there. I mean, they had two horrible
- 30:16commissioners, probably the two worst, you know, Cleovkov and at
- 30:21the end and and Larry Scott, I mean, having ivory towers and
- 30:24San Francisco offices and and then, you know, still can't
- 30:29couldn't get any distribution for their PAC 12 network.
- 30:32And then that's what caused some discontent.
- 30:35And then once the opportunities were there for the big 10 to to,
- 30:40you know, grab USCUCLA and they did then that changed
- 30:44everything. And then and then even at the
- 30:46end, you know, the your mark was just very aggressive with with
- 30:51the, with the PAC 12 or remaining 10 teams, I guess.
- 30:55And, and whereas the PAC 12 could have consolidated, they
- 31:00could have said, well, right, well, we're going to replace
- 31:02them with San Diego State and Boise State or something to that
- 31:04effect. And it probably would have
- 31:07pacified everybody. But instead it'll, you know,
- 31:10left the door open, couldn't decide anything.
- 31:12Then their their contract came in really low and then boom, it
- 31:16was all gone. And yeah, it's a real surprise
- 31:18because they they were in such lockstep with the Big 10 for for
- 31:22decades. And that see it completely
- 31:25dissolved. I mean, it's coming back, but
- 31:27it's not not the same. You know, it's just, yeah, that
- 31:31that is one that just still comes across as very surprising.
- 31:36Number one, the NCAA is not above the law.
- 31:39In fact, we were just talking about this in their first
- 31:41segment in a kind of different capacity.
- 31:43But the Supreme Court getting whooping, the NCAA 9, nothing
- 31:48full circle to where our conversation was today for you,
- 31:52Doc, We were talking about what's next, what this new era
- 31:56of college athletics is going to look like.
- 31:58It's my belief the 20 and a half million dollars that
- 32:01universities are going to go, it's not going to cover
- 32:02everything. And we're going to go back to
- 32:04the days where it's going to be a lot of shadiness and a lot of
- 32:07under the table type of dealings.
- 32:09How do you see financially things for now, the student
- 32:12athletes? How's it going to look now in
- 32:13this next era? You know, I'm going to close my
- 32:17eyes and if I, if I try to imagine 2028, I think it'll be,
- 32:22you know, a lot different than it was.
- 32:23I mean, just think back three years ago.
- 32:24We really know what would happen today.
- 32:26So I, you know, it's hard to say.
- 32:29I don't. I mean, the court case now has
- 32:32been resolved and I would anticipate there's going to be
- 32:35multiple challenges. There already are Title 9, what
- 32:38have you. I I mean, I'm not an attorney,
- 32:41but I would, I would think that it largely will remain intact
- 32:44that the one question I'm going to have is, and this probably
- 32:48would relate to a top five type of scenario and this situation
- 32:52would be does college football break out and become have its
- 32:56own governance structure? You know, do they remain with
- 32:59the NCAA? Does the does the Big 10 in SEC
- 33:02in particular remain with the NCAA?
- 33:04But but if they do, does football branch out and become
- 33:07its own beef dumb within that, you know, as an autonomous is
- 33:11there a commissioner football? How is the money regulated?
- 33:14Because I, I, the one thing is, you know, I don't know if I see
- 33:18it totally. Because the big tenant SEC
- 33:21wields so much power, They're not going to be willing to share
- 33:24anything. They're not going to say, oh,
- 33:26let's go have 70 teams under this one Super League proposal
- 33:29and everybody gets paid the same.
- 33:31Well, the big tenant SEC make way more than everybody else.
- 33:35So they're not going to be willing, you know, the Iowa is
- 33:37not going to be willing to share more with Iowa State, let alone
- 33:40everybody else. You know, I mean, why would Ohio
- 33:41State say, well, we're going to take less so Kansas State can be
- 33:44the same, same as us. That's just not going to happen.
- 33:46So I so I think that that's going to be something that's
- 33:50going to really come out. And and then as far as paying
- 33:53athletes goes, I mean that 20.5 is a starting point.
- 33:57It's not going to be what it is in three years.
- 33:59It's not going to be what it is in five years.
- 34:01You know, it's just going to go up from there and it's going to
- 34:03be interesting to see how schools manage that because it's
- 34:07just gonna get more and more difficult to to to spend that
- 34:10money on those athletes. 11 more from your list.
- 34:13It was #7 but and, and I was totally dead wrong that you mean
- 34:18to tell me that in some guys cable bill in Boise, ID or
- 34:22Gunquit, Maine, there's going to be essentially a Big 10 network
- 34:25tax. And I'm going to have to pay
- 34:27$0.10 because I'm out of the Big 10 footprint and I don't give a
- 34:30damn about college sports. But it's going to be on my cable
- 34:33bill. This is never going to fly a Big
- 34:3610 network going to compete against Acbs or a Fox or an
- 34:41ESPN. And Doc not only has it, it's
- 34:44thrived. It was the impetus behind
- 34:47obviously the SEC and the AC PC networks and they still remain
- 34:51to this day. Sure, the PAC 1012 network was
- 34:54part of the failure of that conference, but the Big 10
- 34:57Network and Jim Delaney out in front of everybody on this and
- 35:03boy, he got one right. Yeah, he did, absolutely.
- 35:06I mean, it was funny. You know how they put it
- 35:08together, which was, you know what the, you know, that they
- 35:12orchestrated it on a napkin and on a beach in Florida and, and
- 35:16it kind of, you know, and then to put it together.
- 35:18I mean, ESPN, the reason why they got low balled them on an
- 35:21offer and wanted them to be more of a sharing agreement with with
- 35:27the Big 10 and, and ESPN. And he thought it was Jim
- 35:29Delaney thought it was an insult.
- 35:30So they put together this their own network.
- 35:32It was not easy. If we could remember that first
- 35:35year, the the distribution Mediacom wouldn't show it.
- 35:38A lot of other net meat cable companies in the Midwest did not
- 35:42show this. And it was, you know, it was
- 35:45kind of a disaster it seemed like at first because everybody
- 35:48locally and they still talk about it fondly about how when
- 35:51they when they were growing up, Iowa basketball games were on
- 35:54over the air every Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, whatever.
- 35:58And that's always a difficult reminder for people, you know,
- 36:01when they are having this BTN and it sometimes that still gets
- 36:04brought up now with it's on Peacock or the games aren't
- 36:07shown in November and on basketball or whatever.
- 36:09But but it was it certainly paid off for the big 10.
- 36:12I mean, they made a lot of money on it.
- 36:14Their exposure for, I mean, women's basketball barely was on
- 36:18TV and the other sports barely were on TV.
- 36:20And and then they're able to really showcase those sports
- 36:23and, you know, and and help the recruiting and all and
- 36:27everything. And then, of course, now people
- 36:29can watch, you know, a directional school play Ohio
- 36:33State on ABGN once a year. And you're able to watch it in a
- 36:38different way, certainly. And the Big 10 Network, Jim
- 36:40Delaney got that one right, no doubt about it here at the local
- 36:44front dock. In the 24 hours Jet Tamala
- 36:47decommits from Iowa State, he's going to Alabama.
- 36:50Iowa has lost their quarterback for the class of 2026 in
- 36:54cashier. Now, maybe I just got a negative
- 36:57slope. Maybe it's the cloudy weather
- 36:58outside today. I don't know what it is.
- 37:00But you know, with high school recruiting, the way things are
- 37:02going in the transfer portal and quarterbacks and the way they
- 37:05move, I kind of look at this and say, So what?
- 37:07The likelihood that a quarterback's going to stick
- 37:09around long enough to play a lot of these programs doesn't
- 37:12matter. How impactful, though, Do you
- 37:13see it, the losses for both Iowa and Iowa State?
- 37:16It's easy to be cynical and and it's certainly skeptical and
- 37:20somewhat cynical, Trent. And you're right.
- 37:21I mean, because I mean, if you're taking the Iowa angle, I
- 37:25mean they haven't been able to keep a quarterback that they
- 37:27recruited all the way through the end of his eligibility since
- 37:30state stamps. I mean, every single one of them
- 37:33have gone to a different school with eligibility, including
- 37:35several transfer portal guys, you know, in Iowa State.
- 37:39You know, it wasn't that, you know, long ago where we're
- 37:41talking about JJ Cole, you know, and he's gone and, you know, so
- 37:45you really you're figuring on keeping one out of every and one
- 37:49quarterback every three years. And in some ways, it's almost
- 37:51better for you to to lose out on the front end then get all the
- 37:55way to the signing day or a year into it.
- 37:58Then you figure, hey, you know what, this guy's got a chance,
- 38:00but it might take him two or three years and then they go
- 38:03and, and that makes it even more frustrating.
- 38:05So I, I mean it, yeah, it's a, it's a tough loss at this point,
- 38:10but it's not as challenging, difficult as it once was because
- 38:14of the transfer portal. And because everything's so
- 38:16transient now, you can really, you know, people, other people
- 38:20are going to leave, you know, think about what happens when so
- 38:23and so gets fired in November or, you know, they have a bad
- 38:26season. You have a good season and
- 38:28somebody opens up. I mean, it's, it's a real free
- 38:31for all and and, you know, and then there are other really good
- 38:34quarterbacks who leave after one year.
- 38:36And so I I wouldn't, you know, five years ago, you know, this
- 38:40would have been like devastating, you know, but but
- 38:43now it's just shrug it off and move on.
- 38:45I mean, I think for Iowa person, you know, out of their
- 38:47recruiting, I think the lack of defensive lineman is probably
- 38:51more concerning than their quarterback situation right now.
- 38:54Scott Dockerman from the Athletic Dock.
- 38:55Congrats on that piece. It was a great read.
- 38:58Reminded me of a lot of things that somehow kind of get pushed
- 39:01aside. What do you got coming up this
- 39:02week at The Athletic? Yeah, I sat down with Kirk
- 39:06Ference yesterday and talked to him about a lot of different
- 39:09things. And so I've got a story coming
- 39:11out here in the next, I think the next couple days.
- 39:13I, I need to write it first, you know, but I got that.
- 39:19And then I've got a couple of projects we're working on that's
- 39:22really taking up probably more time than it should, but yeah,
- 39:26money issues and the like. So yeah, that's kind of my
- 39:29summer. It's actually almost as busy as
- 39:31it is the fall. So that's what I'm looking at
- 39:33right now, guys. Good stuff, doc.
- 39:34Appreciate it. We'll talk to you next week.
- 39:36Thanks Doc. OK.
- 39:38Thank you so much. See you, buddy.
