- 0:02This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me covering One Piece episodes
- 0:12four sixty seven through four sixty nine. Nice even if it means death Loofy
- 0:18versus the Navy. The battle starts, hard battles one after another, Devil
- 0:24Fruit Eaters versus Devil Fruit Eaters, and Kuma's transformation, Eva's blow of anger.
- 0:33In these episodes, we have got a lot of people sort of finally
- 0:38deciding whose side they're on, and a long sequence of a marriage between Boa,
- 0:48Hancock and Louvi. Truly, you guys so puzzling. Welcome to spoil
- 0:58Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very
- 1:19much to Florian for commissioning this episode. Y'all. Yes, this is a
- 1:25real weird one in its ways. There are spots where it just feels very
- 1:30one piece, and then there are places where I was like, what is
- 1:33this? What is happening here? So I'm just gonna start off at the
- 1:38beginning. These are and this tends to be the case. When you guys
- 1:42have booked like three episodes in a row for one recording, those episodes usually
- 1:51are very overlapping to the point where, like you know, I usually jump
- 1:56ahead so that I can skip the credits because it's often got spoilers in it,
- 2:01and I usually try to get to the spot ideally where you have like
- 2:08the title card, even though I don't want to try and read them.
- 2:13The title card is the signal. Okay, we have finished with like the
- 2:19previously ons, and now we're getting into like the meat of the new episode.
- 2:24But in these a lot of the time, even after the title card,
- 2:30we're getting full repeats of scenes in the previous episode. And I was
- 2:35really surprised, like the third episode out of these three, it was it
- 2:40was so much just like going back over scenes that had just happened. But
- 2:46you know, like I find it frustrating when I'm watching it one after the
- 2:51other, but I have to imagine them. When these were airing like once
- 2:54a week, you needed that kind of reminder. So all right, let's
- 3:00start off with even if it means death, because this is when you know,
- 3:06we had all of our Lufy and his friends sailing through the sky with
- 3:10the amazing narration of like you may wonder why Lufy and his friends are sailing
- 3:15in the sky in the last episode, and I really enjoy that the arrival
- 3:22here and the way that Sengoku is like, it turns out trying to fake
- 3:29them out. When he said that he was moving up Ace's execution, I
- 3:35keep wanting to say Ace's assassination, and I think it's just like the alliteration
- 3:38that's sort of appealing to me, and my brain just wants that to be
- 3:42what it is. But it I really liked the fact that he had been
- 3:47trying to trick them, because you guys, it didn't even occur to me.
- 3:51It's one of the things about this show, and it sort of winds
- 3:55up working in its favor. But there is a sort of inconsistency in tone
- 4:01sometimes where the show will make people much more foolish than you think they should
- 4:06be, all things considered, And then sometimes you'll get in a groove of
- 4:11being like, well, kind of like a lot of people in this are
- 4:14fools, and then all of a sudden they'll bust out with like except this
- 4:17guy, and it catches you off guard in a way that feels at times
- 4:21like all right, well that's not really fair. But also I like being
- 4:28surprised, so I guess I don't mind underestimating most characters as long as I
- 4:32get to have these little moments of like, oh, you thought you knew
- 4:35it was going on, you know. Florence says, yeah, this section
- 4:41is really padded out, but is also a lot going on, lots of
- 4:45small pieces moving. Yeah, And I think that's gonna be like my main
- 4:47challenge in talking about these, because we jump around from fight to fight in
- 4:56a way that's like really ea, it's easy to forget like a particular character
- 5:03and mentioning what's going on with them. So it's apologies if there's any like
- 5:11section or interaction that folks listening are like, I can't believe that she didn't
- 5:15mention xyz. I'm really doing my best. I have the episode like up
- 5:21in another tab that I look at to remind me of things. But sometimes
- 5:27it's just hard to get to everything or you know, know what's important and
- 5:33what's not. That's another part, because some things can turn out to be
- 5:39really crucial later on that you just didn't pay much attention to immediately. So
- 5:46this is like, you know, we have the thing with Crocodile attempting to
- 5:53take down white Beard and Loofy stepping in. It's really funny because he's like
- 6:00in mid air and Whitebeard I don't know if he knew that Lufi was going
- 6:06to save him, or if he just assumed somebody had his back and he
- 6:11just wasn't sure who. Whatever the case, white Beard doesn't move a muscle.
- 6:15He's just like you never learn, do you? And for his part,
- 6:21Lufy's just I like, this dude has brought his entire army here to
- 6:28save Ace. So he's on my side, and yeah, I'm not going
- 6:33to let you hurt him. Like what do you think I'm gonna do?
- 6:38It's you know, I said last time, Like, Crocodile, what was
- 6:42your bigger plan here? You have to know that this is not going to
- 6:45work out. But Lufy's position on this and him being like, you know,
- 6:48I get you want to save your brother, so go ahead and do
- 6:51that and stay out of my way, I'm like, you are threatening to
- 6:56kill the other primary ally in the saving Ace equation before Ace is saved.
- 7:03Why would he get out of your way? This is like key, this
- 7:08is a this is a crucial player in the game. Just wait a second,
- 7:14Crocodile, hold your horses until after the rescue, and then just do
- 7:18some shit whatever, you know. But yeah, he's just not really thinking
- 7:24too clearly here. I love to Marco watching and saying, I guess it
- 7:28runs in the family. There comes a point a little bit later where white
- 7:32Beard is telling Marco like not to let anything happen to Loofy, and he's
- 7:38just like a a But in the immediate moment he's just telling Lufy, you're
- 7:44fucking everything up. What are you even doing here? And it's really funny,
- 7:47you guys, because they show Loofy standing next to him and white Beard
- 7:54is it looks like about fifteen feet tall. He is so huge, and
- 8:03I think that, like overall, this is the part of the show that
- 8:07I find the most confusing. And I know that that's something that's like just
- 8:13a wild statement in general, because one piece is bonkers, so anything being
- 8:18confusing, like how do you quantify which one is the most But for me,
- 8:24it definitely is like the relative size of all of these different beings.
- 8:28We have actual giants, but then we have people who are just like way
- 8:31taller than other people, and then we have like the supersize ors type giants.
- 8:37It is really tough for me to like understand. And I don't know
- 8:41if we get an explanation of this, but it seems like at this point,
- 8:45anybody who's like a warlord has an actual bigger body, And I'm like,
- 8:50does this happen because they become warlords? Is this like a change in
- 8:56their body because of the sheer amount of power that they contain and control that
- 9:03their body has to grow in order to contain it, you know, because
- 9:09otherwise it sort of just seems like too much of a coincidence that all the
- 9:13warlords are so huge. So I don't know, but Boa is not.
- 9:20She's not particularly big, is she. And of course she's always going to
- 9:24be the exception to anything because she's a woman, and there only can be
- 9:28one woman in any given grouping, so whatever is going on with her is
- 9:31not going to be representative of like the average. But I was just trying
- 9:37to remember, and I think that she's kind of like an average sized woman.
- 9:41She's like tall, but not abnormally tall. So the whole vibe from
- 9:54white Beard, he's really delighted with Loofy and the fact that he's like,
- 9:58you know, come out here and just declaring for himself. And I love
- 10:01when he says, don't come crying to me, and Lufy's like, well,
- 10:05I'm not old like you are, so I'm not a don't worry about
- 10:09me. And this is when we get on into the like real the news
- 10:16stuff, because Lufy decides that he's going to be the one who rescues Ace,
- 10:20and by the end of these three episodes, he is the one closest
- 10:24to Ace physically, like he is he has nearly reached him. But we
- 10:31jump over briefly, and I think this is the only time we see these
- 10:35two in these three episodes. UH to Kobe and Helmepo and how Mepo is
- 10:45like, what the hell is Lufy doing? Why would you like bust out
- 10:48of a prison and then come straight to Navy HQ. How stupid can you
- 10:52be? Like I'd be hiding under my bed right now if I were him,
- 10:58And Kobe is like, he's not He's not stupid, He's loofy.
- 11:01This is the only way he knows. And I thought that that was sort
- 11:05of a weird way to say it. I get what he means, but
- 11:09like, and it is sort of funny too that Helmepo's is, well,
- 11:15why didn't he just run away and hide? Because he's not a He's not
- 11:18a piece of shit pussy like you are. Helmetpo no offense. Somebody that
- 11:24he loves is about to get fucking executed, and he's gonna do something about
- 11:28it. And I know that's probably difficult for you to wrap your weird blonde
- 11:33head around, but I'm sorry. If the people close to you would have
- 11:39just been executed without you lifting a finger, I will freely admit likely would
- 11:46also be the case in my situation. If somebody I love we're about to
- 11:50get executed. I don't feel like I would probably wage war about it,
- 11:54because I'm just not that type. But Helmepo just being like, oh,
- 12:00he's so stupid. Is he stupid? Or are you or are you just
- 12:03completely missing the point? Bud, I think it's that second one. So
- 12:11there's a kind of multi episode through line with Ace when we're in his POV
- 12:20so to speak, because you know, and it's a really the way that
- 12:26this goes. I was glad it didn't go on for too too long,
- 12:30because what it is is pretty much Ace just wanting everybody to stop risking their
- 12:39lives and feeling really frustrated that they're not listening to him, that they don't
- 12:46understand he isn't worth dying for, and he's like at one point yelling out
- 12:56at Loofy trying to piss him off basically and tell him like, you only
- 13:03became a pirate because you wanted to copy me, and what are you even
- 13:07doing here? And you know it's very transparent lufy himself. Not that I
- 13:13think even if Ace really meant all of what he was saying, I don't
- 13:20think it would matter to Loofy in the slightest because he's just a very one
- 13:24track kind of mind. But it was the sort of thing that like,
- 13:30we know why you're yelling this, bud, and you may as well save
- 13:33your breath. I understand that you feel the need to make an effort to
- 13:35save your friend, your brother from hurting himself and putting himself in harm's way,
- 13:41but it's too late for that. Now he is in it, like
- 13:48he can't turn around and just leave. They'll fucking crush him. So he
- 13:54is either going to save you and this is you know, he's going to
- 13:58succeed and get all the way to you, or he is going to die
- 14:03in the attempt, and those are the only two options anymore. And eventually
- 14:11Ace does reach a point where he's like, I've decided I'm going to accept
- 14:16any help that I'm able to get. And I was just glad because I
- 14:20thought it was gonna be a lot longer, a situation of like I'm not
- 14:26worth it. I can't take this like sacrifice, it's too much. And
- 14:31I was just really glad I didn't have to sit through too much of it
- 14:35because it's the sort of thing where as much as that is a pretty human
- 14:39reaction, and if I had friends who were putting their lives on the line
- 14:41to save me, I probably would also be like, I love you so
- 14:46much, Please don't it's not fun to watch, you know what I'm saying.
- 14:52And sorry. David says how MEPO kind of has a normal person reaction.
- 14:56Kobe has a reaction with someone who admires and wants to imitrate greatness but
- 15:01isn't there yet. Yeah, I would agree with that. He's definitely There's
- 15:05another series that I'm covering, and there's this sort of heroic person, and
- 15:11it's really interesting because Kobe is like the flip side. This heroic person has
- 15:18one particular follower who is not exactly their friend. It's somebody who admires him
- 15:24deeply and more than he is loyal he wants to be like this other person,
- 15:31and so in a sense is actually threatened by him quite a lot,
- 15:37despite the fact that he's on his side, and so it leads him to
- 15:41sort of doing some shady shit occasionally because he is attempting to gain the kind
- 15:50of like notoriety that the man he admires has gained, but he's going about
- 15:54it in the wrong way. So it's sort of interesting because Kobe is like
- 15:58the invert that what if you were like a good person who wanted who had
- 16:03like a sort of hero worship thing going on with a person that you deeply
- 16:10like respected and not you want to be them, but like representing something very
- 16:18different. That's what's sort of fascinating to me about Kobe is how he is
- 16:22in the Marines. He doesn't seem like he wants out of that situation,
- 16:30so I believe that this is going to be his career trajectory forever. And
- 16:33yet a pirate is one of the people that he just like admires the most.
- 16:41And I actually kind of like that. The concept of being able to
- 16:48see the value of what a person is in their heart despite what their label
- 16:56is, so to speak, and understanding that there's ways that you can implement
- 17:03the same characteristics they themselves have of like tenacity and loyalty, but you can
- 17:11use those in a different direction to support a totally different system than what they're
- 17:15doing. I really like that idea, and I think it's the sort of
- 17:18thing that a lot of us tend to apply. And it can be very
- 17:22easy if somebody isn't on your side, to simply see them as an enemy.
- 17:29And granted, Kobe and Lufy met before Louvi was officially a pirate,
- 17:33before Kobe was in the Marines, so they had a chance to establish a
- 17:37relationship and a friendship before those labels were in place, so that probably helps.
- 17:42But I just like the fact that Kobe didn't go, oh, okay,
- 17:47now you're a pirate, so now we're just enemies, end of story.
- 17:51He just is trying to sort of like thread that needle and be like
- 17:56he's still my bud, And I still think that he is rad as hell.
- 18:02No, I'm not on his side, and I'm technically supposed to like
- 18:04be rooting for him to fail, but also I can't like not admit he's
- 18:10a complete badass. Look at him out here, you know, especially when
- 18:15other people around him just think he's mad because they are so not getting what
- 18:19it is that he is like attempting to do, or what his life is
- 18:26and what's important. David says, what rank will Kobe end up as in
- 18:33hell? Mepo compare power levels to ranks we've seen. Oh god, I
- 18:38can't even begin to guess, David. There's a combo of reasons why one
- 18:45ranks. I completely lose track. If you want to list them with like,
- 18:48you know, least to most to help me out, I could attempt
- 18:52a guess, but I'm not even real confident about that. And then there's
- 18:56also like, you know, they've been being trained by and so they're going
- 19:00to become better fighters. But really it seems like if you want to like
- 19:06get somewhere, you've got to have a fucking devil fruit power and or be
- 19:11able to harness Hakka. And it doesn't seem like either of them are on
- 19:18their way there. And I don't know if it's ever been mentioned, like
- 19:22if they can get their hands on devil fruit, if they would want them.
- 19:26Helmepo strikes me as the type that would definitely want to eat one,
- 19:29because he is just sort of a bully. I don't know how much of
- 19:33that he's grown out of, but that personality type is somebody who's going to
- 19:37take whatever extra power they can get, right. I feel like Kobe would
- 19:41be somebody who would eventually you could coax them to have the devil fruit,
- 19:47but it would not be his like immediate instinct to go after it, because
- 19:52he probably would. He has enough like caution and anxiety to him that I
- 19:57think he would have the same approach that I do of just sort of like,
- 20:00yeah, but you don't know what's gonna happen. You don't even know
- 20:03what this root's gonna do you know? So David is saying Commander Smoker,
- 20:11Captain Admiral Kizeru, Well there's and there's vice admirals, right, And isn't
- 20:19there like below what level are they at currently? They're just like cadet they're
- 20:26not cadets anymore. It's been too long, right, I genuinely do not
- 20:33know. It's hard for me to like imagine exactly how much time passes in
- 20:37this show as well. You know, we've got another five hundred episodes at
- 20:45least to get through, So I don't know how we how much we see
- 20:49them grow up, like how much they what they get up to? You
- 20:56know, Florine is saying, get the spreadsheet. Oh ray, I've got
- 21:00a hold on let me open that in the old discord because Florian uh sent
- 21:07it to me again and I was on my phone when I got it,
- 21:11so I didn't get a chance to save it. But I'm gonna go and
- 21:15grab that, okay, So Vice Admiral, captain, Lieutenant admiral, We've
- 21:23got a bunch of names here. Thank you so much. By the way,
- 21:26I'm gonna put the link to this, well, I was gonna put
- 21:29it in the chat, but I'm not sure you'll be able to reach it
- 21:32because it was only available to me once Florian gave me permission to see it,
- 21:38so it may not be something that everybody can access. But Florian made
- 21:42this spreadsheet with the people's like picture, their name, the position that they
- 21:51hold in, what in whether it's the Marines or you know whatever, like
- 21:53clan or island they live on, and then powers and the ones. The
- 22:00one on top is GARP and it says for powers undefined, which I appreciate
- 22:07that because I was thinking the other day, like do we know what GARB
- 22:11can do? I don't feel like we do. So that helps me to
- 22:14know for sure, like we've seems like very little of him in terms of
- 22:19fighting. Oh, Florence says, everyone can reach it now, Okay,
- 22:23dope, So I'm gonna post it in the chat here and that way,
- 22:30if David wants to take a look at it, I can see. But
- 22:36you know, if i'm if I'm thinking what like, if I'm gonna go
- 22:42with the trope, my assumption would be eventually Kobe reaches admiral and Holmepo gets
- 22:52stuck at like vice admiral, like he doesn't quite get as far. Kobe
- 22:57reaches one of the top positions, and Helmepo is sort of like his right
- 23:04hand, but isn't pure of heart enough to get as far as Kobe does.
- 23:11And that's just pure trope. So I'm not I don't even want to
- 23:15say that's a real guess, you know. But anyway, so I want
- 23:23to talk about the conversation, like Loofy tells white Beard about how they're going
- 23:32to be moving up aces execution, and at first white Beard is upset by
- 23:37this, and then later on he's like, you know, this just doesn't
- 23:42really have the ring of truth to it like Kisaru is a lot of things,
- 23:51but or not Kizaru. Oh my god, you guys help me,
- 23:57Sengoku. But he's not stupid, and he had to know if he's like
- 24:07putting this out over all of the like snail transponders that somebody was going to
- 24:12hear it. So it just feels like this is a fucking setup, and
- 24:17I love how at the beginning of the episode, senng Goku's like, oh,
- 24:22okay, so Lufy shows up and all of a sudden, everybody's acting
- 24:25like it's they're a totally different army, and he's like a little agitated,
- 24:29and then he immediately sort of calms down and is like, it's fine.
- 24:32Our approach is completely like impossible to be and really is telling himself I have
- 24:40nothing to worry about. But then later when it's apparent that white Beard has
- 24:45figured out what the ploy was, then sen Goku's like, all right,
- 24:49well that was pretty obvious, I guess, like he immediately sort of goes
- 24:56yeah, I know, like I probably should have made it a little less
- 25:00obvious what was happening. Oh well, So it felt like a lot of
- 25:06bravado, Like Sengoku doesn't have the confidence that he is projecting actually, And
- 25:15I find that sort of interesting in terms of, like a character thing,
- 25:19how much of it is fake it till you make it, and how much
- 25:22of it is genuine confidence with like I don't want to say a lack of
- 25:30self awareness exactly, but more like underestimating your enemy. And I feel like
- 25:36that knowledge that Sengoku had been trying to set them up when I hadn't expected
- 25:41that kind of trick has made me a little bit more leery of him as
- 25:47a character and made me realize that, like, he's a bit smarter than
- 25:51what we tend to deal with. You know, we haven't had a lot
- 25:57of real care capable baddies lately. We have had baddies with powers that are
- 26:04scary. We have had baddies with like backup and circumstances that make them feel
- 26:14like how can you beat them? But I really think as of right now,
- 26:21Crocodile remains like the most competent of all the bad guys and the one
- 26:26that I still kind of look at as like, this is a dude who
- 26:32we should be worried about, not just in terms of where he is at
- 26:36any given moment, but just the fact that he has the mind to work
- 26:41out like exactly how to play people in a way that can be utilized no
- 26:48matter where he is, and anybody who is that adaptable is a threat that's
- 26:55going to be something that's like difficult to beat. I Maria is he has
- 27:02this power, but like, as Jim Bay points out completely correctly, because
- 27:07we've actually seen this exact thing before, Maria is too fucking greedy for this
- 27:11like shadow power and he overdoes it and then he screws himself. So as
- 27:15much as he has a really dope power, he doesn't utilize it well because
- 27:21he doesn't have good judgment. And we've got Magellan who has this like really
- 27:26crazy poison power, but he is isolated to like this one goal of keeping
- 27:36the jail under control, and there's a real limited sense to him. Like
- 27:41I found him frightening, but I didn't find him super competent. He depended
- 27:48on the wrong people a lot, and that's like a bad judgment call.
- 27:53I feel like Crocodile was the one who when you actually met him and dealt
- 27:57with him directly, he was personally competent. And even though they fought their
- 28:03way through the baroque works, people a lot of them were also pretty badass,
- 28:11and so despite the fact that they ultimately failed, I could see why
- 28:15Crocodile trusted them, whereas Magellan Trustinguss's face who kept wanting to replace him and
- 28:25keeping him in that position. It just felt a little weird to me that,
- 28:29like, this dude was constantly trying to undermine you and making it very
- 28:33clear that he was like Luke, he's sabotaging you because he wanted your job,
- 28:37and there's just not really a It feels like poor judgment for him.
- 28:44So while he has his own very effective personal power, he didn't seem like
- 28:51he had a lot going on beyond that to me. David sis and Gogu
- 28:57being the guy who faked it to the top, who had the Buddha fruit
- 29:00is fascinating. The Buddha fruit. Have we seen that? Like, what's
- 29:06going on with him? I don't even remember because we go through so many
- 29:11new powers and see so many things that I've sort of lost track of what
- 29:15who has done what? Florian says, Yeah, Kroc is a smart devil.
- 29:22David says, if Crocodile had Moria Ornelle's fruit, he would be absolutely
- 29:26devastating because he would use them so much more effectively. That's that's a really
- 29:30good, like way, shorter, quicker way to say what I was trying
- 29:36to say. Like, Crocodile's power is very frightening, but it's more frightening
- 29:44because of how creative he's gotten with it and how like the use he puts
- 29:48it to. There are other abilities that are way more terrifying, and yet
- 29:53those people don't seem to really have like the focus or imagination that Crocodile has.
- 30:00And I gotta be real, I'm really like a little disappointed at the
- 30:06fact that Crocodile goes after white Beard the way that he does, because he
- 30:08has seemed to be so intelligent and to think things through in a big picture
- 30:14sort of way that the fact he is handling this the way that he is
- 30:19it's almost suspect because it's so poorly thought out that I'm like, dude,
- 30:26are you actually trying to hurt white Beard? Or is this part of some
- 30:30other scheme going on, because it just seems like you aren't the type to
- 30:37make this particular type of mistake. I wouldn't think, but you know what,
- 30:41do I know? Sorry, guys, I'm like getting so congested as
- 30:48I'm recording, and I don't know if you can like hear my voice changing
- 30:51because my nose is getting stuffed up. But I was doing great and now
- 30:55all of a sudden, I'm just like all clogged up. So we've seen
- 31:00Lufy like fighting through a bunch of other Marines, and at one point he's
- 31:04really like, I won't say he's getting his ass kicked exactly because he's holding
- 31:08his own, but the dudes that he's going up against are a lot tougher
- 31:14than he was expecting. He thought he was gonna be able to tear through
- 31:17them like they were peons, and it turns out they actually are quite strong,
- 31:22and at one point Lufy is just like Jesus Christ. This is really
- 31:26a little bit more than I was prepared for. And finally we have Maria
- 31:33raising some zombie soldiers. Now I'm curious about this because the zombie soldiers come
- 31:41up out of the ground and Maria decides that he's gonna take the shadows from
- 31:48some other marines and put them into these bodies. So here's my question.
- 31:56Uh oh, sorry, David said he went after white Beard because he's a
- 32:00warlord. I understand the why. In just why he would go after him.
- 32:08I don't understand doing it now, the way that he does it.
- 32:13It just feels like the timing is as bad as it could be to do
- 32:17this, and it just it just felt very foolish, that's all. But
- 32:25this thing with Mariot, did he bring these bodies with him? Right?
- 32:32He did? Right? It's not like these are soldiers that have fallen and
- 32:37he's like resurrecting them. Because the zombies once they stand up, they all
- 32:44have their like body parts stitched together in a way that looks like, okay,
- 32:52they were definitely on the table in the lab. And I can't help
- 32:59but, like, one, what are the Marines make of effect that somebody
- 33:02who's allegedly on their side has like basically stolen the souls of their soldiers to
- 33:12create his like undead army because he flat out says, you guys fight for
- 33:19me now, like he is taking ownership of these Marines in a way that
- 33:25feels very I'm gonna use you the way that I see fit. Fuck the
- 33:30Marines. It's not about the Marines anymore. And this is the sort of
- 33:36thing that I know is the crux of why the Marines teaming up with these
- 33:43Warlords of the Sea is like a questionable enterprise because the Warlords of the Sea
- 33:49are as loyal as they're gonna be, but they don't really they're not rulable,
- 33:58does that make sense? Like they have their agenda and they'll play nice
- 34:02as long as it's in their own interests to play nice and do what the
- 34:06Marines want. But in the end, it seems like mostly they're more powerful
- 34:12than the Marines can handle, and so they can sort of just do whatever
- 34:17they want a lot of the time. And it's the sort of thing where
- 34:24probably if you're sengoku watching this happen, for instance, you're just telling yourself,
- 34:32all right, well, I don't like this, but right now we're
- 34:37in the midst of this big fight, so I'm gonna let Maria do what
- 34:39he do and then we'll cope with like whatever the fucking fall out about this
- 34:45is a little bit later on, once the battle is over, I will
- 34:51come and like be like, give me my men's fucking souls back their shadows.
- 34:55And maybe that's the case, but I don't know how you like an
- 35:00force that how do you just make him do the thing? Because it really
- 35:04feels like he's got quite the advantage at this point. Now, what we
- 35:07find out though, and this I don't remember, this isn't something anybody discovered
- 35:14while they were actually on thriller bark, right, is that because these zombies
- 35:21were raised using devil fruit powers, they are as weak to the ocean because
- 35:30of that whole you know, can't swim sea stone or whatever it's called type
- 35:35thing. So all Jimbay has to do is just like get a wave of
- 35:40seawater to crash over them and they fucking drop. I kind of love this.
- 35:50I think it's really interesting the fact that Oda has made the ocean what's
- 35:59the word I want? I guess the achilles heel of being a devil fruit
- 36:04eater, because he couldn't have picked a more ubiquitous substance. This is a
- 36:10show about pirates and marines. They're literally always taking place on beaches ships like,
- 36:20the ocean is always there. So Oda was like, all right,
- 36:23I'm gonna give these people these bonkers fucking powers, and I'm also going to
- 36:29make it in a way extremely easy to fuck them up, if you know
- 36:34how. But also those people are aware of their own their own weakness enough
- 36:43of the time that they're able to keep themselves from falling into those sorts of
- 36:46traps. This though, with Jimbei and him being like, Okay, here's
- 36:51a wave, now you're done, I really got the feeling that Maria wasn't
- 36:55even aware that this would work. I don't know if he has ever tried
- 37:01to like use these zombies out in the world in this fashion, And maybe
- 37:09he did know and he didn't think that anybody else had like figured it out,
- 37:14but it is. It just seems to me that he was quite shocked
- 37:17when all of his zombies drop because Jimbay is so casual about it, and
- 37:22when he says to Lufy, like because Lufy's watching and sort of like what
- 37:25the hell just happened, and Jimmy's like, oh yeah, well, you
- 37:29know seawater David says, I think the seed darkens the sun. The water
- 37:37rehydrated Loofy and Alabasta, so water isn't bad in itself. The seed darkens
- 37:45the sun. I think I'm not following you. David Florence says, I
- 37:52think there's a difference between seawater and normal water in this world. Oh yeah,
- 37:58like the seawater. It's definitely with the devil fruit eaters, the sea
- 38:01water is the the spec it has like whatever substance in it that they use
- 38:07to make the uh the what is it sea prism stone to stop them from
- 38:13being able to use their powers. It seems like it's just sort of dissolved
- 38:16into the water unless you somehow manage to find a concentrate of it. So
- 38:22I don't Yeah, it's not water in general. It seems just like seawater,
- 38:27but I think the seed darkens the sun. David's is the salt in
- 38:31the seawater rex zombies. That's not what he says. Jim Ay specifically says
- 38:39to Loofy they were brought by devil. They were made with devil fruit powers,
- 38:44so they are weak to the sea, is the way he phrases it.
- 38:49He never mentions anything about the salt. I don't know if that's like
- 38:52another thing that comes up later that gets specified, but that's not what it's
- 38:57presented like here. But anyway, I just like, I just think that's
- 39:01a really fascinating way to approach this, and fucking Maria watching this like thing
- 39:07all of his dudes go forward and just standing there and then we go over
- 39:12to uh the I'm gonna go look for his name real quick, but oh,
- 39:19Kiseru, that is k He is uh the one I think Florian You
- 39:24told me that he was animated to look like a popular like action star,
- 39:30action movie star. He is so sort of fascinating to me as a character,
- 39:39Like it's the design of him for sure, looking so much more like
- 39:44a real person that I initially find fascinating. Also, he has this voice
- 39:50that almost sounds like like a blaxploitation movie character. There's something about the I'm
- 40:02trying to think of the way to describe the tone of his voice because there's
- 40:07it's I want to say cartoonish, but like this is a cartoon, so
- 40:09that feels very pointless and redundant to say. But he just has this sort
- 40:15of tone that's almost like playful, I guess is the word I want.
- 40:21And I just really enjoy anytime he's on screen, even though he is an
- 40:28enemy and doing things I don't like. He's just very entertaining and I enjoy
- 40:32him every time he's on So Okay, David says, back in thriller Bark,
- 40:39we learn that the zombies are weak to salt Ah, that's what you
- 40:45guys are talking about. Okay, Now I remember the salt thing. I
- 40:47had forgotten about that, but yeah, I think Florian says see water or
- 40:53not salt, so I think you can take it either way. I think
- 40:57it's like he says, because they were brought around by devil fruit, they're
- 41:01weak to the sea. He specifically says, like the devil fruit connection.
- 41:05So I definitely think it's the ocean being the antithesis or whatever you want to
- 41:10call it to devil fruit powers. However, if they had told me that
- 41:15it was the salt, that also would have worked for me. Like,
- 41:19I think they're very clear about exactly what's working here, but they could have
- 41:24just left it as the salt thing. And the fact that they didn't,
- 41:29and it's mentioned that it's the devil fruit connection that makes them weak to it
- 41:34means that this is something that could potentially be an issue, like I was
- 41:37sort of thinking. For example, when Magellan poisons Loofy, if well,
- 41:46Lufy's a bad choice because he has devil fruit powers, So if you put
- 41:50Loofy in seawater, he also loses his own abilities. But if you were
- 41:53like a regular person that got poisoned by Magellan's powers and you got sunk into
- 42:00a bath, of seawater. Would that mitigate the effects of the poison because
- 42:06the poison came from a devil fruit power or would it be like too late
- 42:13because it's already in your system and there's just kind of nothing to be done,
- 42:15you know what I'm saying. It just felt like this opened a lot
- 42:19of doors for other potential stuff, which won't necessarily be something that the show
- 42:23pursues a lot, but I just thought it was an interesting question. So,
- 42:29Okay, I'm just taking forever you guys, I'm so sorry. But
- 42:31like I said, there's just so many different things going on in this section.
- 42:37So we have then the moment where everybody finds out who Lufy's father actually
- 42:44is, and I love the different reactions that they have, Like Buggy,
- 42:49for his part, is just sort of horrified. There's almost a sense with
- 42:52Buggy of like, oh my god, and I have been such an asshole
- 42:55to this guy because I didn't know, and I would like to take some
- 42:59of that back, please. We go over to Boa and she's just got
- 43:04her little starry eyes and is saying, it wouldn't bother me if your father
- 43:07was the devil himself. You guys, I do not know how I feel
- 43:15about this boa being in love with Loufy thing. It's so bizarre, I
- 43:21think, and I know I've said this already, but I really think my
- 43:27main issue is just that Lufy seems so childish. So it just feels really
- 43:36creepy. It feels like to me, even though I know Lufy is meant
- 43:43to be like seventeen or eighteen years old, he feels to me like he's
- 43:47fourteen years old like at most, and she feels like she's thirty five,
- 43:55even though I think she's probably not meant to be that old. And so
- 44:01there's just something like about how I hesitate to call Loofy simple minded because I
- 44:09feel like that implies a different thing than what I mean. But Lufy is
- 44:15he has like really childlike qualities and understanding of the world, and so her
- 44:21approaching everything the way that she does, with the assumptions that she's making,
- 44:27it always just it just feels a little weird. At the same time,
- 44:34it is really funny, and the fact that she is able to make everybody
- 44:38around her fall in love with her and then the thing like it happens the
- 44:44opposite way with Loofy is a pretty good gag. And I like that this
- 44:50is how we've decided to do this, like how to cope with her ability,
- 44:54because having Loufy fall in love with her just wouldn't feel like it made
- 44:59sense. He's just not that type. Even if it is like a magical
- 45:01spell. He just seems immune in a way to the charms of men or
- 45:09women. He's like, I don't even know if I want to say that
- 45:13he's exactly asexual, but that's as close as I'm getting to what I mean.
- 45:20It's just uncomfortable, you know. And the way that she thinks about,
- 45:27like because eventually she's got the key for Ace's manacles and Loofy just wraps
- 45:37himself around her to thank her, and she of course goes into this sort
- 45:44of reverie where she's thinking about the way that she like she thinks about,
- 45:51oh, the warmth of his touch is still in my breast, no,
- 45:55my entire body. Is this what people call marriage? And then we go
- 46:02into this like dream sequence of her walking to like down the aisle to meet
- 46:08Loofy, who by the way, is in this like white tux and calls
- 46:14her baby, and it's just so wrong. It's just very wrong, and
- 46:19it's like I want I want to just be able to sit back and enjoy
- 46:25the goofiness of this, but also the weight of this is unfair because there
- 46:32are no female fucking characters in this show a lot of the time. That
- 46:38the fact that one of the most powerful women we have met has been laid
- 46:45low because she can't stop imagining marrying a character is deeply frustrating in a whole
- 46:52different way, you know what I'm saying. And like I said, if
- 46:55we didn't just have one woman in any given group, we've got all these
- 47:01giants and there's one woman giant like the straw Hat crew, even we have
- 47:07two women out of all of them at this point, it's not like fair
- 47:15to expect certain things when you've got so few characters to spread the traits around.
- 47:23There's just no avoiding sometimes the feel of like, oh god, this
- 47:28is gross. Like Lufy runs into uh, what's her name? Cage and
- 47:36half the scenes with her, well the scene it's really just one scene where
- 47:39she shows up, but it's all about how the other two dudes on her
- 47:44team are like in love with her, and you know what I mean,
- 47:49it just feels like, can we just have like any women who it isn't
- 47:55their sexuality that's like the main point of them. Around the straw hats,
- 48:02we mostly don't get that except when it's sangy. The others leave them alone
- 48:07mostly and it's not like, you know, a huge thing. But even
- 48:13when we land on other islands and stuff and encounter other people, they do
- 48:17wind up becoming like the object of somebody's speculative eye. And I just wish
- 48:24that we could get away from this a little bit more. Have more women.
- 48:29Have it not always be about that how beautiful they are, how like
- 48:37how much men want them and how they can use that, or how it
- 48:39renders men useless or whatever. Oh god, David, David just said three
- 48:46straw hats women, there's viv remember with a winkie face. You take that
- 48:51back? Ugh? Ugh, ugh, I'm so sorry that I didn't like
- 48:57VIVI everybody. I'm sure that there are people out there who are just like
- 48:59I don't understanding Natasha. Why are you so mean to her? I don't
- 49:02understand it either, I just you know, I just really she was just
- 49:06very very dumb. But anyway, so, yeah, this whole thing with
- 49:09Boba, like she steps in to save him a couple times, because Smoker,
- 49:14for his part, is over here, Like I wondered who the fuck
- 49:16it was that stepped in and saved you, and now it makes sense it
- 49:21was your dad and he's not fucking here right now, so nobody's gonna save
- 49:27you. And as soon as he says nobody's gonna save you, I was
- 49:30like, sir, you can't say those words out loud. I love it,
- 49:34though, Guys. He's holding him in place, saying to Lufy,
- 49:38nobody is going to come save you, and Lufy is just struggling against him
- 49:45and just says, at least in the dub, this sucks. And I
- 49:52don't know why, but I've watched these episodes twice and both times I just
- 49:57like kind of snort laughed because it just felt like such an in add quit
- 50:00expression. This dude is like gonna kill you in a second. He is
- 50:02here to take your life, and just being like this sucks is just so
- 50:07understating the situation. It was just it got me. It really made me
- 50:10fucking laugh. Florian says, this is still so funny to me that you
- 50:15don't like her love it. I'm glad that it's at least amusing. I
- 50:21Uh, y'all I will just never get over her standing at the bottom of
- 50:24that staircase. I know that's a stupid thing to get fixated on. I'm
- 50:30aware, but it's just one of those things. We all have, the
- 50:34things that we are fully aware we are being unreasonable about and we can't help
- 50:42it. It's just the way we feel about it. And that staircase and
- 50:45her standing at the bottom of it while people are coming at her on fucking
- 50:46horses. I will just never recover from what a stupid move that was.
- 50:52Anyway, So let's talk about this thing with fucking Kuma, because uh Kuma
- 51:00is evidently no longer alive and this was such a surprise the way that this
- 51:07is presented. It takes a while to kind of like get to the point
- 51:12here, because, like I said, we jump around a lot, and
- 51:14there's dragging. We drag a lot of things out. But eventually uh Dop
- 51:20Flamingo is like mocking Eva because Eva sees Kuma and believes, like, oh,
- 51:27we were friends, we were cool, and so if I am able
- 51:31to get to him and talk to him, then he's going to lay off
- 51:36because we have history. But Kuma doesn't seem to recognize him, and it's
- 51:43still attacking him in the normal way, and dop Flamingo says like, oh,
- 51:49well, Kuma doesn't exist the way that you remember him anymore. And
- 51:55I kind of had thought, well, Kuma like that kumam was still alive
- 52:01as himself, but that they had made clones of him that did different things.
- 52:12And I kind of thought that do Flamingo implying that Kuma is straight up
- 52:17dead was just him fucking with Eva a little bit. But then when we
- 52:22go over to Loofy and he like you know, catches up with Eva,
- 52:27eventually he is thinking about how Kuma said to him, we will never meet
- 52:34again, and Lufy thinks to himself, he knew even then, So I
- 52:42had an idea of what this meant, and it seems like I was really
- 52:45not getting it. Apparently the thought is that Kuma was like being experimented on
- 52:53even as he was at Thriller Bark, and he knew he was close to
- 53:00being killed. Is that what I'm supposed to be getting from this. I
- 53:05don't really understand how he was out in the world, like able to do
- 53:10his own thing, but also still being experimented on and knowing that his life
- 53:16is going to end. I this may be something that I'm not supposed to
- 53:21understand fully at this point. It might just be like we're getting hints of
- 53:24stuff and then we'll get a full story later. But you know, I
- 53:29commented at the time how weird it was because it felt like Kuma was actually
- 53:32trying to help Lufy when he is allegedly against them. And then in this
- 53:38episode, Iva says how much Kuma hated the government, and so this gives
- 53:47the impression that whatever was going on with Kuma serving them was either against his
- 53:53will or it was a ploy on his part, but nevertheless, like eventually
- 54:00cost him his life. Florian says, yeah, I think you go in
- 54:06the right direction with your thoughts. Okay, So yeah, it's just a
- 54:10weird situation, and I really like I felt for I've a because thinking you
- 54:16see a friend and that you like having an expectation of how they're going to
- 54:21act toward you and then they don't is always like a really jarring experience.
- 54:28I've had this in like real life. I've also read a lot of books
- 54:31where there's a thing that's happening with like a character that you met earlier and
- 54:35they behaved one way and then you run into them again and they are not
- 54:38acting like themselves. And even in a book secondhand, it's like always just
- 54:44sort of like, wait, what the fuck? I liked this guy?
- 54:45Why is he acting like this? David says, there's a mystery that takes
- 54:51a bit to unravel. You might want to get a corkboard for Kuma in
- 54:53particular. Ooh, fun, I should fucking get a corkboard to have behind
- 54:58me and when I record. But yeah, there's like, what was it?
- 55:04Is it? Oh? It's sense and sensibility. Uh. If any
- 55:07of you have like read that Jane Austen or watched any of the movies,
- 55:12there is a point where Willeby, who is this really likable character that you've
- 55:17grown to enjoy a lot, he just bounces and disappears and the sisters don't
- 55:24know what happened to him. And then eventually they run into him at a
- 55:29party in London and he acts like he barely knows them. And that's always
- 55:34one of my favorite scenes because it's so upsetting and it's so public and they
- 55:40genuinely do not get why he's behaving this way, and they can't exactly call
- 55:45him out, although the sister one does so this thing with Kuma and like,
- 55:51I have a being like, dude, it's me, what the fuck
- 55:55is? I felt really bad for Iva. There was just something very pure
- 56:01in the way that Iva was trying to be like, but we're friends though,
- 56:06you know. And eventually Iva gets to this point where he's like,
- 56:13I can't believe you don't remember me. Nobody forgets my face. And that's
- 56:19the way that he like presents the the rage that he's feeling. He the
- 56:29just indignation over let's see, I'm seeing the part where he's like got letting
- 56:37his face get scanned, and he's saying as if he'd ever sacrificed himself for
- 56:42your stupid plan. Snap out of it. It's me, I love Do
- 56:45Flamingo. Can you stop yelling? It's really starting to get on my nerves.
- 56:51Do Flamingo I find very annoying, but in a way that is amusing.
- 56:54Nevertheless, you know, he does this thing here where you know Kuma
- 57:00has just said, well or not, Kuma, I'm sorry, I've a
- 57:07He is talking to him like how can he be gone? And do Flamingo
- 57:13says he was fine just a few days ago, but it's tragic. Before
- 57:22you know, it someone's gone, and I can't help but laugh a little
- 57:29bit at the fact that, like every time Do Flamingo is poking at people,
- 57:34he can't help but do a sort of like existential thing. He just
- 57:38always has to get in a little bit of like, well, that's the
- 57:43tragic comedy of the human condition, isn't it? And he is really It's
- 57:51like you could see it as somebody just kneeling everyone around them, and I
- 57:57certainly think he knows it's irritating, and so that adds to his own amusement.
- 58:00But I think to a point, Do Flamingo really is actually sharing his
- 58:07thoughts. I think he is sort of like, yeah, wow, life
- 58:10right, it just really comes at you fast. And there's a bit about
- 58:15him with this attitude that I can't help but enjoy a little bit because I
- 58:22do this, you know, in the midst of like some sort of situation,
- 58:27and then I'll step back from it and sort of be like, wow,
- 58:30shit's really fucking crazy, you know. So anyway, he says,
- 58:37uh that Kuma doesn't even realize anymore that he ever used to be human,
- 58:44so you know, he's just like a monster now there's he may as well
- 58:50be dead and this is when we see Kuma doing his like, uh laser
- 58:55blast thing that sends both Lufy and I have a ducking for cover as he
- 59:00fucking lights up one side of the uh, the ocean. It's sort of
- 59:06weird and this is a danger you guys. We've seen him do this sort
- 59:09of weird power before, and granted it was the actual Kuma, it was
- 59:12not this imitation, and his power was supposed to be so impressive we saw
- 59:17from Afar how it's basically like a mushroom cloud. And then the island's fine.
- 59:22We come back and it's like everybody got knocked over, and that's pretty
- 59:27much the extent of it. The building got damaged, you know. But
- 59:31yeah, this is when I've a it is just like nobody fucking forgets my
- 59:37face and knocks this imitation Kuma on his ass. I'm a saying, hehaw
- 59:46just makes me giggle a little bit, like I don't really get that,
- 59:52but it still works, you know, as just like a weird catchphrase.
- 59:59And he his crew Succulent Candy Boys, which I straight up want to be
- 1:00:06a band name please, I just really, you know, here comes Ivanka
- 1:00:14and this Succulent Candy Boys he does vengeful kick and sends Kuma karening like basically
- 1:00:23into a mountain of ice, and one of the people just yells, work
- 1:00:28at boss, I love that so much. And yeah, this is when
- 1:00:32Ivis says, I've met a lot of people, but nobody ever forgets my
- 1:00:37face. And then we jump over to Buggy. Now, I haven't really
- 1:00:40dealt with Buggy, and I'm like out of time here, so I'm just
- 1:00:44gonna do it really quickly. But suffice to say, he is still like
- 1:00:51being hyped by his dudes in a way that's like really overestimating what he's capable
- 1:00:57of, and they expect him to just straight up fight white Beard, to
- 1:01:01which Buggy at least has the wisdom to know, I am out of my
- 1:01:05depth with that. Oh my god, I can't fight him, but he
- 1:01:07doesn't want to lose face, so he's just sort of like just buying time.
- 1:01:13And eventually white Beard pretends he needs Buggy's help and that like, Buggy
- 1:01:20can just go ahead and kick his ass later as long as they can team
- 1:01:23up right now. And it's such a good bit because Buggy takes it at
- 1:01:28face value and Marco is like standing next to Whitebeard after this interaction, and
- 1:01:35he just says something like, well, he is really surprisingly easy to manipulate,
- 1:01:45and I just really I thought that was so funny, like how obvious
- 1:01:51it is to everybody. Mister three is just watching from the sidelines as everyone
- 1:01:54keeps hyping Buggy up, being like, how do you guys not see that
- 1:02:00he's fucking playing you? And it's just funny. It's very funny. I
- 1:02:06did not. I am enjoying the role that Buggy is playing sort of in
- 1:02:12the background of all of this, And eventually he sees that like Lufy has
- 1:02:15made a break to go towards Ace and is thinking like, oh, he's
- 1:02:19just gonna steal my thunder Guys, we got to head out now, and
- 1:02:23he had been hiding in like a snowbank or something, so they just burst
- 1:02:27out and they're following Lufy and fucking Crocodile is still attempting to get at white
- 1:02:35Beard, and all of Whitebeard's guys are just you've got to go through us,
- 1:02:38and white Beard's starting to get pretty irritated by this because it's just a
- 1:02:43waste of resources. At this point, the fucking Diamond guy turns up and
- 1:02:50gives him a pretty good deck in the face and it seems somewhat effective,
- 1:02:55and do Flamingo turns up and the two of them apparently have a little bit
- 1:02:59of a his But this Diamond guy, I do really enjoy his ability and
- 1:03:06it looks cool as hell. But let's see and yeah, and then so
- 1:03:12then we have the very very last moment where uh Lufy has almost seemed to
- 1:03:17reach ace, but you've got all these clouds of dust ahead of him,
- 1:03:21so like, you know, he's not reaching ace. Whatever. There's something
- 1:03:23in that's dust, and it turns out to be Hawke guy. It's me
- 1:03:28Hawk and he is standing there and he says to himself like, hey,
- 1:03:31sorry, Shanks, but I'm not going to go easy on him. I
- 1:03:34wonder if he's gonna die today or maybe maybe not, who knows. He
- 1:03:38is very philosophical in his approach, and I genuinely don't know what happens here
- 1:03:44because like ordinarily I would think he would crush Loofy it would be no problem.
- 1:03:49But I don't think Lufy is being stopped. I think that he gets
- 1:03:52through somehow, and I don't know if it's an assist from somebody else,
- 1:03:57if he manages to utilize an ability I haven't seen yet. If me hawk
- 1:04:01like changes his mum, I don't know. So anyway, that's where we
- 1:04:09are. I'm gonna wrap this up. Thank you guys so much for hanging
- 1:04:12out with me. I appreciate you a lot. Thank you for for making
- 1:04:15the spreadsheet as well. And until next time, kids to the Loo,
- 1:04:17motherfuckers. That was an unspoiled Network podcast.
