- 0:54To God be the glory. Welcome to the Healthy and
- 0:57Redeemed podcast. I'm your host, Haley.
- 1:00Have you ever struggled with forgiveness?
- 1:04That's going to be our topic today.
- 1:05We're going to talk a little bit generally about forgiveness and
- 1:09how it can hinder our relationship with God and with
- 1:12other people, and even our own healing process.
- 1:15We're going to look at what the Bible says about forgiveness,
- 1:19God's own heart about forgiveness.
- 1:22We're going to look into restitution and reconciliation
- 1:25and what those have to do with forgiveness.
- 1:29And then we're going to briefly talk about the myth of self
- 1:32forgiveness. Several years ago, I answered
- 1:37God's call to lead a Bible study at my church, and I received a
- 1:45phone call about somebody inquiring about that Bible
- 1:48study. And it wasn't long into the
- 1:51phone call that this young lady begin telling me about her life,
- 1:56her struggles, her children, her divorce.
- 1:59And she also mentioned that she didn't feel close in a
- 2:02relationship with God at the present time.
- 2:06So I started talking to her about several things that could
- 2:11cause silence from God, specifically sin.
- 2:15And after I'd kind of gone through the list, she said,
- 2:19after hearing you say that, I know exactly what it is, what is
- 2:23causing the separation. And so I was quiet, of course.
- 2:29She said that since her divorce, she had very bitter feelings
- 2:33toward her ex. And she said that it she wasn't
- 2:38even sure that she wanted to forgive him.
- 2:41But she did realize that if she wanted her relationship with God
- 2:46to not be hindered any longer, that she was going to have to
- 2:50work through that. So many people go through life
- 2:55troubled about their relationship with other people
- 3:00and they struggle in their relationship with God.
- 3:03And normally it is because people fail to forgive those
- 3:09that hurt them. Forgiving means to give up
- 3:12resentment, the desire to punish, to stop being angry
- 3:17with, to let a debt go. You know, we have a need to be
- 3:23forgiven by God. We were born into this fallen
- 3:26world, a world where we all sin and we all fall short of God's
- 3:32glory. But God created us with a need
- 3:36to fellowship with him and with others, and our fellowship with
- 3:41God is hindered until we receive forgiveness.
- 3:46Why is that? God is a holy God.
- 3:53We just did a study a little, or actually I guess we're still in
- 3:57it on Revelation and it talks about that.
- 4:00This, I don't remember if it was the notes or who said this, but
- 4:07it said it was interesting. This was one of God's attributes
- 4:11that's repeated 3 times over. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God
- 4:16Almighty. You don't find that with other
- 4:20attributes of God, but His Holiness is what stands out.
- 4:27God from the very beginning of time is offered forgiveness to
- 4:32His people. Throughout the Old and New
- 4:35Testament, we are presented with a salvation story in which God
- 4:42continually offers us redemption.
- 4:47He offers us a relationship that is only possible through
- 4:52forgiveness. Humanity heals through that
- 4:55forgiveness, and with forgiveness, you and I receive
- 4:58new life. Many of us have received this
- 5:01forgiveness from God. We realize that we've done
- 5:05nothing to deserve it, and we cherish it as a gift.
- 5:10But with this forgiveness of God comes another gift.
- 5:13As we bow before our Master and accept what He has given us, we
- 5:20rise up as a new creation. When someone realizes they're a
- 5:24Sinner and humbly accepts God's gift of mercy through Jesus
- 5:28Christ, something amazing happens.
- 5:32And although we may not look any different on the outside,
- 5:34something on the inside changes. Our desires, our attitudes, and
- 5:40our behaviors all change and we desire to obey God.
- 5:49Through God's forgiveness, we can actually be healed of our
- 5:52past and be made new in His image.
- 5:55And I am so thankful for that. That's how I became a new
- 6:00creation. This change can't come from
- 6:04other types of forgiveness, except that which God gives.
- 6:09Our family can forgive us, our friends can forgive us and, and
- 6:14that is important, but there's no other forgiveness that's
- 6:18going to change us like the forgiveness of God.
- 6:21Hallelujah. It is important to remember that
- 6:25the change that we experience may happen suddenly or it may
- 6:30happen gradually. And like me, maybe you have a
- 6:34mix of both of that. But God promises that all who
- 6:40are in Christ will be made a new creation.
- 6:43This transformation is the beginning of our wholeness as we
- 6:47learn to place everything at our Savior's feet.
- 6:50Accepting forgiveness from our Creator is an important step in
- 6:54healing and change. And another important step in
- 6:58healing and the growth process is forgiveness of others.
- 7:04So not just accepting forgiveness from God, but also
- 7:08our part in forgiving others. If we want good spiritual,
- 7:14mental, physical, emotional health, it will be important for
- 7:19us to forgive those who have hurt us.
- 7:21Let me read you a quote from the book When Counseling is not
- 7:25enough, the author writes Withholding forgiveness, which
- 7:29Foster's hate and bitterness is like a cancer.
- 7:33It eats away at 1 spiritually and emotionally, until 1's life
- 7:38is ruined. Forgiveness is not only right,
- 7:42it is always the best thing we can do for ourselves.
- 7:45You can think that your life is as bad as it can be because of
- 7:49what someone else has done to you, but it can get worse if you
- 7:54refuse to forgive. Wow, that's pretty powerful.
- 7:59So forgiveness is really difficult sometimes, especially
- 8:05when the hurt is deep and it is going to take some time.
- 8:09And sometimes we have to heal some before we can even get to
- 8:14the part where we want to forgive.
- 8:17Many people have really deep hurts and have to be allowed to
- 8:21work through all those emotions. We have to understand that
- 8:25forgiveness is not just trying to push the hurt out of our
- 8:29mind, it's not ever excusing someone for what they've done,
- 8:35and it's not just trying to forget it.
- 8:38Although forgiveness is not a cure all for every relationship
- 8:43trouble that we have, we can find healing when we deal with
- 8:48our sin, our guilt, and our lack of forgiveness in our lives.
- 8:54And although some people who might be considered mentally
- 8:57healthy will function fairly well in this world, true healing
- 9:02and growth comes from the forgiveness of God through Jesus
- 9:05Christ and the ability to forgive others with that same
- 9:09grace that we've received. Forgiveness is being forgiven,
- 9:13and it's also forgiving others. So whether we're accepting the
- 9:16forgiveness of God or extending forgiveness to others, both are
- 9:20very important to our healing process.
- 9:23I would like to look at a few scriptures about forgiveness.
- 9:28Let's look at Matthew 614 through 15 and see what Jesus
- 9:33says about forgiveness. For if you forgive other people
- 9:37when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also
- 9:41forgive you. But if you do not forgive others
- 9:44their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
- 9:50In Mark 1125 says, and when you stand praying, if you hold
- 9:56anything against anyone, forgive them so that your Father in
- 10:01heaven may forgive you your sins and that those were Jesus words
- 10:07also. So those are a couple very hard
- 10:10verses to hear. If you have people in your life
- 10:13you haven't forgiven. You know, over time forgiveness
- 10:16does cause bitterness. And the lady that I talked to,
- 10:20she was able to identify that it also can cause resentment, anger
- 10:26and even depression. As Christians, we can't live in
- 10:29fellowship with God with unforgiveness or the side
- 10:32effects of it. That is why those verses are so
- 10:37tough. If we hold on to unforgiveness,
- 10:40we actually, I believe, deny what Jesus did on the cross.
- 10:45We don't understand the gift that God has given us through
- 10:50His Son. What right would we have not to
- 10:54forgive someone their debt when we have been forgiven our own
- 10:58debt? I mean, we can't be prideful
- 11:02enough to say their debt is much worse because then we're putting
- 11:07ourselves in God's place when we don't forgive.
- 11:11And I hear just like you, all the evil things people do to
- 11:14other people all the time. What people do to the elderly,
- 11:18to children, to animals, and just to others in general.
- 11:22It's like heart wrenching and sometimes it even makes us sick
- 11:28to our stomach to hear true stories.
- 11:32But let me tell you this, and this is going to be hard to hear
- 11:35too. But if that offender, that
- 11:39person that has done that heinous act, went to the cross
- 11:44and sincerely repented, if they asked for forgiveness from God,
- 11:49God would forgive them. He would.
- 11:52I mean He knows the condition of their heart.
- 11:55So if they came to him and their heart was that of repentance, he
- 12:02would forgive. Our standard of judgment can't
- 12:06be higher than God's mercy. We don't want to have a heart
- 12:10like Jonah where we don't want to preach a message of
- 12:13repentance because we don't want to see the people repent and God
- 12:18Forgives them. And then we say, yeah, they
- 12:21don't deserve God's mercy. If we allow ourselves to think
- 12:25like that, we are the ones with the hard heart and we don't
- 12:29really understand or comprehend like we should our own position
- 12:34as a forgiving person. And friends.
- 12:37I hope that doesn't sound too harsh, but I really believe we
- 12:41need to be convicted in this area.
- 12:44The good news is all about forgiveness.
- 12:47So what are we thinking if we don't forgive?
- 12:50And sometimes people stumble on the part of well, I will forgive
- 12:54them once they come to me and recognize they did wrong.
- 12:56This concept of the other person having to come to you is not in
- 13:02the Bible. We do need to go to others if
- 13:06we've offended or hurt someone else.
- 13:10But please let me know where it says in the Bible that the
- 13:14offender must come to us for us to forgive them.
- 13:18I see a couple of things. We must go to God to repent of
- 13:22our sins, and then He will forgive us.
- 13:26And we have to forgive others, no matter how many times that
- 13:31person offends us or hurts us. As far as the act of forgiving,
- 13:37God doesn't say we wait for them to repent.
- 13:40We forgive because God has forgiven us.
- 13:42That's the standard. So we go back to that, the
- 13:46scripture that I started with, for if you forgive other people
- 13:50when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also
- 13:53forgive you. But if you do not forgive others
- 13:56their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
- 14:00That doesn't say wait till the person comes to say they're
- 14:04sorry and then you can offer your forgiveness.
- 14:07It just says God's forgiven you. You forgive.
- 14:11If you don't forgive, God doesn't forgive you.
- 14:14And I think the basis of that, again, is understanding the gift
- 14:20that God's given us. He is going to forgive them if
- 14:23they are sincerely repentant in front of him.
- 14:27We don't make that. We don't make that judgment.
- 14:30We're not God. Thank goodness.
- 14:32We forgive because God has forgiven us.
- 14:35That's the standard and so here are a couple other scriptures
- 14:39that state the standard. Ephesians 432 be kind and
- 14:43compassionate to one another, forgiving each other just as in
- 14:48Christ God forgave you. Colossians 313 says bear with
- 14:54each other and forgive one another.
- 14:57If any of you has a grievance against someone, forgive as the
- 15:01Lord forgave you. I believe that when we
- 15:05understand, or at least seek to understand God's heart on
- 15:09forgiveness, that that's actually going to transform our
- 15:12own. If you go to my website,
- 15:14writtenbyhaley.com, there's going to be a tab where called
- 15:19Free Resources where you can go to a limited access area and
- 15:24there you're going to find a lot of resources.
- 15:27And I have a resource, they're called Steps to Forgiveness and
- 15:31it's going to list out these steps with about 9 scripture
- 15:34references. And it's just a helpful one page
- 15:39resource that will help you begin to work through the
- 15:43forgiveness process. I will have that link in the
- 15:48show notes also. So some practical ways to
- 15:54forgive. First is we want to know God's
- 15:58heart on forgiveness. So I shared with you in the
- 16:02beginning some reasons why we need to forgive and talked
- 16:09through some Scripture references of why we need to
- 16:12forgive out of obedience. But it is so important to know
- 16:17God's heart on forgiveness. He does not take that lightly.
- 16:22Again, this is what the good news is.
- 16:24The more that you know about God's character, the more it's
- 16:27going to transform you. And He has a heart for His
- 16:31people. He wants them to come to Him
- 16:35because He wants to forgive them.
- 16:38The second practical step would be to pray for God's heart.
- 16:43I recognize because I am a counselor, so I hear these
- 16:47stories all the time of people that have been deeply hurt,
- 16:53deeply injured, deeply traumatized by evil acts of
- 16:58others. My heart breaks to hear that, to
- 17:03know that people have to go through that, that to know that
- 17:06people have to walk that out in their lives.
- 17:11But I promise you, God cares for you.
- 17:17He loves you, He sees you and He's with you and wants to heal
- 17:24you. And part of that healing for you
- 17:28is going to be that you get a heart after Him to forgive those
- 17:34deep, deep hurts. You will have to rely on God's
- 17:40heart within you. You have the Holy Spirit in you
- 17:44and he will help you. If you pray for God's heart,
- 17:49you'll be able to extend that as well.
- 17:53Step 3 is acknowledging the hurt.
- 17:58And so this is a, this is a big one because sometimes we just
- 18:03want to shove it aside, try not to think about it.
- 18:09We don't acknowledge that it was really painful.
- 18:13We don't acknowledge the fact that it really hurt us.
- 18:18Now, sometimes we do the opposite.
- 18:20All we do is think about the hurt that it's caused us.
- 18:24But there is a place in the middle where we acknowledge the
- 18:29hurt. We experience the pain, but
- 18:31we're willing to move past that. We're willing to feel that hurt,
- 18:38but then give that hurt to God. So we, we do want to feel it and
- 18:44acknowledge it. We don't want to minimize it or
- 18:46shove it away or try not to think about it.
- 18:49We, it happened and we need to acknowledge it.
- 18:53And Step 4 is to be praying over each of those hurts that were
- 18:58done to you, each evil act, each sinful act that was done to you
- 19:04or done to someone that you love.
- 19:06Pray over each one of those. And I find it helpful for my
- 19:11clients to write those things down and so that you can
- 19:16specifically pray over each one as you remember them.
- 19:20You just put it on your list and pray over each one.
- 19:24Do you want to teach your children godly traits such as
- 19:27kindness, gratitude, and forgiveness?
- 19:29The Red Ball is a story of Renata, a young girl who
- 19:33receives a special gift. When that gift goes missing, she
- 19:37is left to figure out what to do.
- 19:39Through her journey, she learns a lot about herself and what
- 19:42forgiveness really means. The lessons found in the book
- 19:45can be made even more meaningful with the Red Ball Companion
- 19:49Activity Book featuring over 30 activities.
- 19:53Both books are the perfect addition to any homeschool
- 19:56curriculum or as a thoughtful anytime story.
- 19:59Get your copy today and help your child build a heart that
- 20:03reflects Jesus. Step #5 is to pray for what to
- 20:08do next. Often times God might call us to
- 20:12reconcile in the relationship. Now that is going to take a lot
- 20:18of wisdom. That's why it's important to
- 20:20pray to see what God wants you to do because there's two things
- 20:25that we could do. God may ask us to reconcile with
- 20:28that person, and I will say this, if someone has greatly
- 20:33injured you and they are not well or healed or made any
- 20:40confession to the Lord, they haven't changed.
- 20:43They're still their old self. That would not be someone that
- 20:48you would reconcile with. Reconciliation takes a wisdom
- 20:52and it takes health. Now, if it's a slight offense,
- 20:56of course we're going to reconcile the relationship.
- 20:58Most things, if it's not an evil, heinous act, we can work
- 21:03through. A lot of times people are
- 21:06holding on to unforgiveness for stuff that can be worked through
- 21:11or talked through. It just means that someone has
- 21:15to go with a humble heart. So what happens if we are the
- 21:19person that has done wrong? Well, we are called to go to God
- 21:25and ask for forgiveness. We are to repent, and that means
- 21:28to turn away from our sin. So we don't just go to God, ask
- 21:32for forgiveness and keep on sinning.
- 21:35No, we go to God, we ask for forgiveness, and then we work
- 21:40our tail to the bone, relying on the Holy Spirit because He wants
- 21:45to help us not do that sin again.
- 21:49And that really shows a transformed heart when we're
- 21:51really working hard not to sin. And a lot of that's just the
- 21:57grace that the Lord gives us. And a lot, a lot of it is our
- 22:01own choices of what we're doing, where, where we are, what we're
- 22:06watching, what we're listening to.
- 22:08When Jesus says in Matthew about cutting off your right hand if
- 22:14it causes you to sin, I think that looks like a decision that
- 22:19we have to make. Do we cut things out of our life
- 22:23that are making us or tempting us or making it harder to avoid
- 22:31sin? If you're trying not to be a
- 22:36drunkard, well, going to the bar on Friday night should not be an
- 22:42option. That's when you need to not
- 22:44literally cut off your right hand, but you cut off that part
- 22:49of your life so that you're not in a tempting situation.
- 22:54If you're working to stay pure, you don't sit in the back seat
- 23:00of a dark car with the person of the opposite sex, like you're
- 23:04just setting yourself up, like you have to cut off some things
- 23:08in your life so you're not going to sin.
- 23:10If we sin, we go to God, we repent, we move away from our
- 23:15sin, we're asking him for forgiveness and He forgives us
- 23:20and we go confess to the person that we've hurt.
- 23:25That's what we're called to do. We go make things right with the
- 23:30person that we've hurt. Now, the other things we may do
- 23:34are reconcile or make restitution, and we talked about
- 23:38reconciliation. That is a wisdom matter and I
- 23:42think a prayerful matter that we have to think about if the
- 23:45person is healthy. You know how I feel about
- 23:48calling people toxic? That's not helpful.
- 23:51That's not healthy on our part. To do that, we want to do the
- 23:56best we can to be as healthy as we can in all relationships and
- 24:01especially if they're family members or someone like that.
- 24:03That's maybe not the healthiest. How do we stay healthy in the
- 24:07midst of those relationships? Because we can't just break off
- 24:10every relationship that causes us a little pain or is hurtful.
- 24:16That's not helpful and I don't think God calls us to do that.
- 24:21What does restitution look like? We don't talk much about
- 24:24restitution these days. A restitution means making
- 24:28something right or back to the way it was.
- 24:31So if I borrow something from someone and I lose it or break
- 24:36it, just the I'm sorry is not enough.
- 24:40We need to replace that item and maybe we need to do it four
- 24:44times over. Do you remember the story of
- 24:47Zacchaeus in Luke 19? I'll try not to break out in
- 24:50song. We start in verse 5 and it says
- 24:54when Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him,
- 24:58Zacchaeus, come down immediately.
- 25:01I must stay at your house today. So he came down at once and
- 25:06welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and
- 25:09begin to mutter. He's gone to be the guest of a
- 25:12Sinner. But Zacchaeus stood up and said
- 25:15to the Lord, Look, Lord, here and now I give half of my
- 25:20possessions to the poor, and if I've cheated anyone out of
- 25:23anything, I will pay back four times the amount Jesus said to
- 25:28him today. Salvation has come to this house
- 25:32because this man too is the son of Abraham.
- 25:35For the son of man came to seek and to save the lost.
- 25:39That my friends is what a changed heart looks like.
- 25:43We are willing to sacrifice because we understand salvation.
- 25:48Zacchaeus heart was transformed by Jesus.
- 25:54Maybe people saw him as a Sinner, but we know that
- 25:58Zacchaeus, he was a Sinner. But being in the presence of the
- 26:03Lord, he recognized what he had done wrong and he wanted to make
- 26:08restitution 4 times over. The sacrifice meant nothing
- 26:14because his heart was transformed by Jesus.
- 26:19That is a testimony, my friends. That's why we need to make
- 26:23restitution because Jesus changes us.
- 26:27If you've wronged somebody and you've confessed to the Lord,
- 26:30and then the next step is to go to in humble confession to the
- 26:34person that you've hurt. And believe me, I know that is
- 26:38hard. I have had to do this before.
- 26:41I had confessed my sin to God and I know he forgave me because
- 26:47I turned away from that kind of behavior.
- 26:50But God told me to go confess to the person I hurt when I was
- 26:55mentally healthy to do so. And that was a lot harder than
- 27:00even going to God because going to God is private.
- 27:04But going to someone else to confess your sin is, yeah, I had
- 27:10sinned against them, so that's why God wanted me to go.
- 27:14I was obedient, and God did really need me to be.
- 27:17If I hadn't have been obedient to Him, that disobedience would
- 27:22have hindered my relationship with God.
- 27:24We can't come to God's altar and not have tried to make it right
- 27:29with other people. We have to go confess our sin if
- 27:34it's against them to them. I did not reconcile that
- 27:37relationship with that person. That wasn't necessary.
- 27:42It wasn't appropriate and just. They were million miles away,
- 27:47but still, that wouldn't necessarily been appropriate.
- 27:50However, if God had wanted me to reconcile with that person, then
- 27:55I would have done my best to do that.
- 27:57But really, a lot of the times it is up to the other person
- 28:01that you've hurt whether they want to reconcile or not.
- 28:04We don't force it upon them. We don't guilt them into
- 28:07reconciling. We allow them to do with our
- 28:10confession whatever they want to do.
- 28:14They may yell at you, they may scream at you, but we don't
- 28:20worry about that. We do what God has called us to
- 28:23do. We humbly confess, we apologize,
- 28:26we ask forgiveness from them, we're kind to them.
- 28:31If we do need to make restitution, we do that.
- 28:34We do that because God tells us to do.
- 28:39Now, if you have done something wrong and you're struggling a
- 28:42lot with guilt, I want to let you know that your debt is paid
- 28:48in full. I will say this about guilt, the
- 28:52emotion of guilt. The emotion of guilt is meant to
- 28:56be a temporary emotion. It is designed to be a temporary
- 29:03emotion that causes us to repent when we feel guilty because we
- 29:10have legitimately done something wrong.
- 29:14It should make us go to God and repent of our sins and once we
- 29:18do that, we are forgiven and that emotion of guilt should be
- 29:22gone. If you still feel guilt after
- 29:26you've confessed to God, then that emotion that you're feeling
- 29:30is not guilt, it's condemnation, and that's not from the Lord.
- 29:36I want to talk about one more thing today and that is the myth
- 29:41of self forgiveness. This idea of forgiving yourself.
- 29:46I don't even know where it came from.
- 29:48I'm sure some psychology thing, I suspect that people probably
- 29:55felt guilty even after they repented and so they thought
- 30:00they needed to forgive themselves too.
- 30:03But I don't see this concept of self forgiveness in Scripture.
- 30:08Nowhere do I see this concept in scripture.
- 30:13And this is what I hear in my office a lot.
- 30:16And I hear this outside my office too.
- 30:18And I'm sure you have too. Maybe you've even thought it.
- 30:22I know this is the quote. I know God has forgiven me, but
- 30:26I can't forgive myself. And I want to say this in the
- 30:30nicest way possible. Also, do you hear how prideful
- 30:34that sounds? That your standard of
- 30:37forgiveness is higher than God's?
- 30:41Like I totally get it. I had a whole decade of sin.
- 30:45I repented but then couldn't walk in the forgiveness that God
- 30:49gave me. But when I was in prayer one
- 30:52day, God reminded me that once I lift up that sin to Him, it's
- 30:57gone. I'm a new creation.
- 30:59My sin is removed, though they are like scarlet now there's
- 31:03white as snow. And so I begin walking in God's
- 31:08truth of that. Anytime a condemning thought of
- 31:12how bad of a person I really was, I would replace it with I'm
- 31:17a new creation. I've already confessed that sin.
- 31:22It's gone through that transforming of my mind and
- 31:25walking in God's truth. That burden, that emotion was
- 31:30lifted off of me. I stopped going by my feelings
- 31:34on it. I went by truth.
- 31:36Truth renewed my mind and my life.
- 31:40So if you're in this boat of having a hard time forgiving
- 31:43yourself, I want to challenge you just a little bit.
- 31:46Simply accept God's forgiveness. That's not a feeling, it's an
- 31:52act. I mean, it's great if you feel
- 31:54forgiven after you confess it to God, but honestly, we can't rely
- 32:01on feelings to guide us in this. Truth needs to guide us.
- 32:05If you've gone to God and repented, except that you're
- 32:08completely and wholly forgiven, you don't need to forgive
- 32:11yourself. You need to accept God's
- 32:14forgiveness. And please walk in that
- 32:18forgiveness. Let me read a few more
- 32:20scriptures first. John 19 says if we confess our
- 32:28sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and
- 32:32purify us from all unrighteousness.
- 32:36So we are forgiven in Christ, not we need to forgive
- 32:40ourselves. Romans 81 says therefore there
- 32:43is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus because
- 32:49through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has
- 32:53set you free from the law of sin and death.
- 32:59And Psalm 51, four says against you, you only have I sinned and
- 33:05done what is evil in your sight. So you are right in your verdict
- 33:09and justified when you judge. God, not self, is our ultimate
- 33:15judge. The right response when we have
- 33:19done something wrong is to repent, receive God's grace and
- 33:24forgiveness, and then walk in that truth, working hard to
- 33:29conquer the sin. Here's some things to take away
- 33:33for us to think about this week. We are to forgive others because
- 33:38God tells us to do that. The one that has offended or
- 33:43hurt us, they don't need to come to us for us to forgive them.
- 33:48If we have hurt someone, we do need to go to them, apologize,
- 33:51ask for forgiveness and reconcile or make restitution if
- 33:55we need to. We reconcile only if
- 33:57appropriate. That is, if the other person
- 34:00wants us to, it's safe to do so, or God tells us to.
- 34:03Forgiveness is vital to a healthy relationship with God.
- 34:07Our guilt is meant to be a temporary emotion that leads us
- 34:11to repentance. Once we do that, that guilt
- 34:14should be gone. If you still feel guilty, that's
- 34:18condemnation. But we don't follow our
- 34:21feelings. We follow truth, right?
- 34:24True forgiveness comes from God, not from ourselves.
- 34:29I want to mention a a few things before we go.
- 34:32One is the thing that I mentioned earlier is I've got
- 34:35some free resources at my website.
