- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo, where we make learning this beautiful language simple and fun. I'm Lucas, and as always, I'm here with my favorite co-host, Luna. Luna: Hi everyone! I'm so glad to be here. Last episode we ordered snacks at a café, and I've been practicing my እንጀራ and ቂጣ ever since. Lucas: That's great, Luna. And today, we're going to talk about something close to many of our hearts: family. Specifically, we'll learn how to say 'grandfather' and 'grandmother' in Amharic. Luna: Oh, I love that. My grandparents are so special to me. Let's learn these words for sure. Lucas: Let's start with 'grandfather'. In Amharic, it's አያት. Listen carefully: አያት. Say it with me, አያት. Luna: አያት. That's not too hard. አያት. It sounds warm, like a wise elder. Lucas: Exactly. Now, 'grandmother' is እናት. It's the same word for 'mother', but context tells you it's grandmother. እናት. Try it, Luna. Luna: እናት. Hmm, it feels soft. እናት. I think I can remember that. Lucas: Perfect. So we have grandfather አያት and grandmother እናት. Now, how do we ask if someone has a grandfather? The phrase is አያት አለህ? Say it slowly: አያት አለህ? Luna: አያት አለህ? That means 'Do you have a grandfather?' Right? Lucas: That's right. And 'Do you have a grandmother?' is እናት አለህ? Try it, Luna. Luna: እናት አለህ? I like how it flows. እናት አለህ? Lucas: Great. Now, if someone asks you, you might want to say 'Yes, I have a grandfather.' That's አዎ፣ አያት አለኝ. Let's break it down: አዎ means 'yes', and አያት አለኝ means 'I have a grandfather'. Say it with me. Luna: አዎ፣ አያት አለኝ. And for grandmother, it would be አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ? Lucas: Exactly. You're catching on so quickly. Let's practice all six phrases together: አያት, እናት, አያት አለህ?, እናት አለህ?, አዎ፣ አያት አለኝ, and አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Luna: Let me try them all. አያት, እናት, አያት አለህ?, እናት አለህ?, አዎ፣ አያት አለኝ, አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. How did I do? Lucas: You did fantastic, Luna. Now let's put these into a tiny scene. Imagine you're at a family gathering and you meet a new friend. You might ask, አያት አለህ? And they might answer, አዎ፣ አያት አለኝ. Luna: Oh, I can picture that. And if I want to ask about their grandmother, I'd say እናት አለህ? and they could reply አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Lucas: Perfect. That's a natural conversation. Now, let's do a quick practice. I'll say the English, and you say the Amharic. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Grandfather. Luna: አያት. Lucas: Grandmother. Luna: እናት. Lucas: Do you have a grandfather? Luna: አያት አለህ? Lucas: Yes, I have a grandfather. Luna: አዎ፣ አያት አለኝ. Lucas: And the last two, for grandmother. Do you have a grandmother? Luna: እናት አለህ? Lucas: Yes, I have a grandmother. Luna: አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Lucas: You're a natural, Luna. This is such a useful topic because family is so important in Ethiopian culture. Luna: Absolutely. And I think these phrases will help us connect with people on a deeper level. By the way, if you're enjoying these lessons as much as I am, a small contribution can really help us keep making them. Lucas: That's true. Something like a couple of dollars a month genuinely makes a difference. If you've gotten something out of these episodes, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it helps us keep everything free and accessible. Now, back to our family words. Let's do one more round of practice to make sure they stick. Lucas: Good idea. Repeat after me: አያት.... እናት.... አያት አለህ?... እናት አለህ?... አዎ፣ አያት አለኝ.... አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Luna: That was clear. I feel confident now. Next time we meet someone's family, I'll be able to ask about their grandparents. Lucas: And that's a wonderful skill. Keep practicing these phrases, and next time we'll build on them even more. Until then, happy learning from all of us at Fexingo.
