- 34:33Speaker 10: Here.

- 34:43Speaker 4: They hoist Ada to her feet, walk her to the car,

- 35:51Speaker 1: Dana's phone rings. She ignores it.
- 35:54Speaker 13: I'm sorry to hear that she complete guilty. Avoid a
- 35:58Speaker 13: trial that way.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Alexi just looks at her.
- 36:02Speaker 8: Okay, then are you asking for a postponement?
- 36:06Speaker 1: No, Dana, I'm asking for a little compassion. The phone
- 36:09Speaker 1: rings again? Do you need to answer that?
- 36:12Speaker 4: Dana picks up the receiver, sets it down with more
- 36:14Speaker 4: force than necessary.
- 36:15Speaker 8: Compassion, the same compassion she showed her son.
- 36:19Speaker 13: Sure, sure, let me just figure out how I'm going
- 36:21Speaker 13: to square that away with dozens of disability rights groups
- 36:24Speaker 13: who won't leave me alone.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Ah.
- 36:27Speaker 4: She studies Dana, who automatically smooths her hair even though
- 36:30Speaker 4: it's perfect.
- 36:33Speaker 8: Was there something else?
- 36:34Speaker 12: It goes deeper than just winning this case, doesn't it?
- 36:37Speaker 12: I recognize it, that need for approval.
- 36:40Speaker 8: I'm sorry, what does that mean?
- 36:42Speaker 4: Alexis picks up a framed photo from Dana's desk, looks
- 36:45Speaker 4: at it, sets it back down.
- 36:46Speaker 12: This office won't help with that. Harvey has a way
- 36:49Speaker 12: of making you feel like you're not quite measuring up,
- 36:51Speaker 12: and before you know it, you've become someone you didn't
- 36:54Speaker 12: want to be.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I remember when this was my office. I was a
- 36:58Speaker 1: lot like you. Then Dana straightens the photo to our liking.
- 37:03Speaker 13: Not to be rude, but I don't think you know
- 37:05Speaker 13: me well enough to make that comparison.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Alexis walks around the office, inspects Dana's degree.
- 37:12Speaker 12: I was the only one in my family who went
- 37:13Speaker 12: to college. Let alone law school. My friends from the
- 37:17Speaker 12: neighborhood accused me of thinking I was better than them
- 37:20Speaker 12: when I changed my name from Alejandra. They said I'd
- 37:22Speaker 12: always be from the bodyo no matter what turns to face. Dana,
- 37:27Speaker 12: I was the only Mexican girl in my graduating class. Me,
- 37:31Speaker 12: a scrappy, foul mouth kid from the streets of East LA,
- 37:34Speaker 12: graduating summa cum loud.
- 37:35Speaker 1: From Stanford Law.
- 37:37Speaker 12: I had a lot of doubts of where I fit in,
- 37:40Speaker 12: but I always knew what I wanted to do and.
- 37:44Speaker 1: What was that Alexa steps closer to her escape my past.
- 37:49Speaker 1: I poured myself into my work.
- 37:51Speaker 12: I thought if I could only work hard enough, long enough,
- 37:54Speaker 12: sixteen eighteen hour days, win every case, then I'd be
- 37:58Speaker 12: good enough, worthy off. My past wouldn't matter. But I
- 38:03Speaker 12: learned the past always matters, Dana. You can't really go
- 38:08Speaker 12: forward until you take a look back in law and
- 38:11Speaker 12: in life.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Dana's phone rings, I'll be sure to remember that.
- 38:16Speaker 8: Thanks for the advice.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Alexis moves to the door, turns back around.
- 38:21Speaker 12: Oh, by the way, we'll be arguing substantial capacity. Under
- 38:24Speaker 12: the circumstances. Ada couldn't appreciate the consequences of her actions.
- 38:28Speaker 12: After the jury hears her tragic story. I'm sure they'll agree.
- 38:32Speaker 12: Nice chatting with you, Dana. Don't let this office or
- 38:36Speaker 12: Harvey eat you up.
- 38:39Speaker 1: She leaves.
- 38:40Speaker 4: Dana choose a nail, stares out the door. Harvey strolls in.
- 38:44Speaker 4: Dana quickly pulls her hand away from her mouth.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Was that Alexis Martinez I saw leaving? Yes, and she
- 38:53Speaker 2: didn't say hello. I'm hurt. What did the esteem Miss
- 38:58Speaker 2: Martinez want.
- 39:00Speaker 1: To rattle me?
- 39:03Speaker 8: Harvey?
- 39:03Speaker 13: I'm concerned about the strength of this case. The confession
- 39:07Speaker 13: is out and as of now we only.
- 39:09Speaker 8: Have two witnesses.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Do they both say she's guilty?
- 39:13Speaker 13: Yes, and I'm still waiting to hear back from the
- 39:16Speaker 13: medical examiner and the psychiatrist.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Then that's all you need. Don't let the lexus get
- 39:23Speaker 2: to you. She's a sharp lawyer. I should know. I
- 39:26Speaker 2: taught her that this case will likely be open and shut.
- 39:31Speaker 8: Well, she's arguing capacity. Maybe we should offer a deal.
- 39:36Speaker 4: He removes a cigar from a suit jacket pocket, goes
- 39:39Speaker 4: through the process of cutting and lighting it as he speaks.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Dana, do you know why I promoted you?
- 39:45Speaker 13: I assumed it was because I'm a hard worker who
- 39:48Speaker 13: does a good tub.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Because you're black or white, there's no middle ground with you,
- 39:53Speaker 2: no shades of gray. Someone's either right or they're wrong.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Guilty or innocent. Dana, that's what they call you.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Did you know that puffs on a cigar to light it.
- 40:06Speaker 2: You don't allow yourself to feel any empathy for the criminal.
- 40:09Speaker 2: And that's what makes you a great prosecutor. You have
- 40:13Speaker 2: the absolute courage of your convictions. You never waver, so
- 40:17Speaker 2: the jury never does. It's why you're sitting in this office,
- 40:21Speaker 2: and it's why you're trying this case. Don't go getting
- 40:25Speaker 2: soft on me now, Dana. I'd hate to find out
- 40:28Speaker 2: I was wrong about you.
- 40:30Speaker 4: He blows a puff of smoke, exits. Dana retrieves a
- 40:34Speaker 4: bottle from a desk door, sprays a room freshener in
- 40:36Speaker 4: the air, then leans back in her chair stares at
- 40:38Speaker 4: the ceiling.
- 40:40Speaker 1: The phone rings again. Dana exhils loudly and to fact one.
- 40:45Speaker 2: So let's take ten oh in that room, right, and
- 40:49Speaker 2: then we'll reprevent you too. Cu Wait, this is fantastic
- 40:52Speaker 2: you have Yeah, I mean
