Speaker 3: He's Bill Pocozi. He's going to join us in studio,
2:25
Speaker 3: coming up a little bit later on. Also, just a
2:27
Speaker 3: couple of days ago, two big event announcements from the
2:30
Speaker 3: City of Charleston and other officials. The dates have been
2:32
Speaker 3: set for the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships. Now
2:35
Speaker 3: we get worried that the following week in June, this
2:38
Speaker 3: USA Gymnastics All Gymfest is coming to town. Expected about
2:43
Speaker 3: five hundred athletes. That's five hundred people. That's five hundred athletes,
2:46
Speaker 3: not counting all the family members and fans and going
2:49
Speaker 3: along with it. So a pretty big deal for the
2:51
Speaker 3: city of Charleston. Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention of
2:53
Speaker 3: Visit Burea will join us to talk about that. Plus,

Speaker 3: you can speak my friend.
3:10
Speaker 4: Thank you, David.
3:11
Speaker 3: I appreciate that you're welcome. John Thanks for being here,
3:14
Speaker 3: Thanks for being.
3:14
Speaker 6: I've been called Johnson's I was in trouble.
3:16
Speaker 3: Get a closer to that microphone. I act like you've
3:18
Speaker 3: been here before.
3:18
Speaker 6: I haven't been called Johns since I was in trouble.
3:20
Speaker 3: When I was I was going to say, when you're where, well,
3:22
Speaker 3: you know you started acodom me, David.
3:24
Speaker 2: That is correct, So there you go.
3:25
Speaker 3: All right, I'm going to start on a serious note
3:29
Speaker 3: and then we'll get into some more serious things. But
3:31
Speaker 3: because it's you and me, sometimes we kind of you're offload.
3:33
Speaker 3: I do want to talk about Kenny Bass. Kinny Bass
3:35
Speaker 3: quurse passed away two nights ago, sixty two of cancer.
3:39
Speaker 3: Your your recollections with Kenny Bass.
3:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, you asked me what was on my mind, and
3:43
Speaker 5: I think we both sort of decided that Kenny was
3:44
Speaker 5: kind of on our mind this morning. And you know,
3:47
Speaker 5: I spent eight years as the auditor and Kenny for
3:50
Speaker 5: all eight of those years was the investigative reporter for
3:52
Speaker 5: the news station right, and so Kenny and I spent
3:55
Speaker 5: a lot of time together. From the Supreme Court impeachments
3:59
Speaker 5: through the end of my term as auditor. He was
4:04
Speaker 5: really the pre eminent investigative reporter around here. And Kenny
4:07
Speaker 5: did things the right way. He researched his stories, he
4:10
Speaker 5: got first hand sources, and when Kenny wrote something or
4:14
Speaker 5: said something, there was there was meaning behind it, and
4:17
Speaker 5: he really set a standard for journalists in the area here.
4:20
Speaker 6: But when you look at all the national awards.
4:22
Speaker 5: And things that he won, he was respected and set
4:25
Speaker 5: the same sort of standard nationwide. And the world would
4:29
Speaker 5: be a lot better if Kenny was still here, and
4:30
Speaker 5: the world would be a lot better if all of
4:32
Speaker 5: our journalists had the same compassion and intelligence and ethics
4:37
Speaker 5: that Kenny had. And so he's going to be really
4:39
Speaker 5: really missed around the Capitol and in my office.
4:42
Speaker 3: And the public viewing. We learned yesterday on the show
4:45
Speaker 3: yesterday mentioned News Midday will be at the Clay Center
4:48
Speaker 3: on Friday evening.
4:49
Speaker 5: I can't imagine that Kenny would have wanted that Kenny
4:52
Speaker 5: Kenny to be publicly viewed all that.
4:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, you never know, but but you know, and a
4:57
Speaker 3: lot of people didn't know this about Kenny because he
4:59
Speaker 3: only saw the guy on television.
5:01
Speaker 5: Now.
5:01
Speaker 3: I think probably those of us in the Kanaw Valley did,
5:03
Speaker 3: but maybe elsewhere did not. He was a big lover
5:05
Speaker 3: of the arts involved with you know, the various productions, plays,
5:10
Speaker 3: dinner theaters, animal lover did all that stuff.
5:13
Speaker 5: He was a great actor and and and Kenny also
5:15
Speaker 5: got married a little bit later in life and just
5:17
Speaker 5: absolutely loved is his bride and his family.
5:20
Speaker 6: And you know, he was pretty private about that stuff.
5:22
Speaker 4: Kenny was.
5:24
Speaker 6: Kenny was an.
5:25
Speaker 5: Awesome husband and an awesome person and a great dad
5:27
Speaker 5: to his to his children that he sort of got
5:30
Speaker 5: later in life.
5:31
Speaker 3: Turned to General J. B. Mccusky's Here of a Dave
5:32
Speaker 3: Allen Show and Fine Eddielie brought to you apart by
5:34
Speaker 3: Love Healthy West Virginia presented by wv you Medicus one,
5:37
Speaker 3: a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles going to be on the state.
5:40
Speaker 3: Check have of latest episodes wv metronws dot com and
5:43
Speaker 3: of the podcast menu. I was kind of keeping an
5:45
Speaker 3: eye on the national news here with everything going on.
5:48
Speaker 3: It seems that the biggest, biggest story of the last
5:50
Speaker 3: couple of days has has been this uh reno that
5:57
Speaker 3: the President is doing uh to the White House. A
6:00
Speaker 3: lot of people are upset about it. Some people are not.
6:02
Speaker 3: Is there any truth in the room that you're gonna
6:04
Speaker 3: be doing a similar thing at the Capitol?
6:05
Speaker 4: Yeah.
6:06
Speaker 5: So if you've seen outside the Capitol, there's a lot
6:08
Speaker 5: of back hoes and jack hammering going on. And so
6:11
Speaker 5: the mccusky family wing, which will be a ballroom and
6:14
Speaker 5: also a golf simulator, will be added right on the
6:18
Speaker 5: river side to make sure that the Capitol has all
6:20
Speaker 5: the facilities that somebody needs.
6:22
Speaker 3: You probably need to follow that up by saying you're joking.
6:24
Speaker 3: I am joking because this is where we live right now.
6:28
Speaker 4: JB.
6:28
Speaker 5: You know that if Randall Reid Smith is listening, I'm
6:30
Speaker 5: sorry Randall for giving you a heart attack.
6:33
Speaker 3: We were kidding. What do you make of all that?
6:35
Speaker 3: In all seriousness, then we'll get to state issues.
6:37
Speaker 6: Heres.
6:38
Speaker 5: I mean, at the end of the day, I think
6:40
Speaker 5: people the twenty four hour news cycle and everybody is
6:43
Speaker 5: just conditioned to try to be mad about something all
6:46
Speaker 5: the time. And you know, it's the White House. It
6:49
Speaker 5: was built from whole cloth, like not that long ago.
6:53
Speaker 5: And so the idea that this president thinks that that
6:56
Speaker 5: building should have a should have a ballroom in it, fine,
6:59
Speaker 5: I mean, whether you like it or don't.
7:00
Speaker 6: Like it, it just isn't that big of a deal.
7:03
Speaker 3: And I'm kind of right there with you. And I've
7:04
Speaker 3: been somebody that's not always been on board with this
7:06
Speaker 3: president the administration, but that's just kind of where I am.
7:09
Speaker 3: I mean, and you look back at all these folks
7:11
Speaker 3: that all these other presidents that have done all these
7:13
Speaker 3: things to it. I mean, you know, Truman basically redid
7:16
Speaker 3: the White House, and first Ladies have done it, and
7:19
Speaker 3: Obama put in a basketball court.
7:21
Speaker 6: And they used to have a swimming pool. It's had
7:23
Speaker 6: a golf hole out there.
7:24
Speaker 5: I mean, and I guess if a Democrat, God forbid,
7:28
Speaker 5: wins presidency next time, they won't use the ballroom.
7:30
Speaker 3: I mean, it's going to say. It's not like they
7:31
Speaker 3: can take it with them. You're not going to put
7:33
Speaker 3: it in a mobile home.
7:35
Speaker 5: And you have to assume that the next president is
7:37
Speaker 5: going to go in there and be like, oh, this
7:38
Speaker 5: ballroom is actually pretty sweet and it's great that I
7:40
Speaker 5: don't have to go all over God's creation to have
7:42
Speaker 5: these state dinners, and you know, and then everyone will
7:45
Speaker 5: forget about it when the first time they have an
7:47
Speaker 5: event with a Democrat in that ballroom, everyone will say, Oh,
7:50
Speaker 5: this ballroom's really nice.
7:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, What else is on your mind? What
7:53
Speaker 3: are you working on these days?
7:54
Speaker 6: A lot of stuff.
7:56
Speaker 5: You know, we've talked about this before, but we have
7:58
Speaker 5: the BPGA case coming up at this Supreme Court that's
8:00
Speaker 5: taken up a whole lot of our energy. We have
8:03
Speaker 5: some really interesting cases coming up involving data privacy and
8:07
Speaker 5: child safety as it relates to the ways that kids
8:11
Speaker 5: and and people that pray on children interact with them online.
8:14
Speaker 5: I think in the coming months we're gonna have some
8:17
Speaker 5: really exciting announcements about some actions we're taken against those folks.
8:21
Speaker 5: And you know, just in general, we have a government
8:24
Speaker 5: shutdown going on right now, and that takes up a
8:26
Speaker 5: lot of oxygen everywhere that we go, and you know,
8:30
Speaker 5: everybody wants to sort of figure out why it's happening.
8:33
Speaker 5: And I think the answer is usually right right underneath
8:36
Speaker 5: everybody's nose, and that's that Congress has a really hard
8:38
Speaker 5: time getting along.
8:41
Speaker 3: Is there any impact as it trickles down to your
8:44
Speaker 3: office from the from a federal government show.
8:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, there would be.
8:46
Speaker 5: We have a pretty significant interaction with the Medicaid system
8:50
Speaker 5: because we run the Medicaid Fraud Unit. But you know,
8:52
Speaker 5: our grants are are are annual, so not necessarily. I
8:58
Speaker 5: think it's time for people that are it's funny to
9:02
Speaker 5: me that that there's a whole group of people that
9:04
Speaker 5: vote to close the government down and then blame the
9:06
Speaker 5: people that voted for keeping it open for shutting it down.
9:09
Speaker 5: It's time for those who are voting no to vote
9:11
Speaker 5: yes and figure out a more productive way for them
9:14
Speaker 5: to try to make their point. And that's probably going
9:17
Speaker 5: to come at the ballot box as it's supposed to.
9:19
Speaker 3: And I mean, any idea from you, any gases to
9:23
Speaker 3: when when the whole thing comes to an end, you know.
9:25
Speaker 6: The longer it goes, the longer it can go, right.
9:27
Speaker 5: And I think we had the number two Democrat in
9:30
Speaker 5: Congress yesterday saying that she is she understands that this
9:35
Speaker 5: is causing enormous consternation to American families and the most vulnerable.
9:39
Speaker 5: And I think her exact quote was that our that's
9:42
Speaker 5: our biggest leverage point and so the people who are
9:45
Speaker 5: voting no, I think understand what they're doing, uh, and
9:49
Speaker 5: they are willing to cause that level of pain in
9:51
Speaker 5: order to achieve the non budgetary goals that they have
9:55
Speaker 5: that really need to be dealt with in in individual bills.
9:59
Speaker 5: And I think when you look at the totality of
10:02
Speaker 5: what Congress does, they've become, you know, sort of a
10:05
Speaker 5: biennial budget convention. And it is difficult to legislate when
10:11
Speaker 5: every single piece of legislation has five thousand topics in it.
10:15
Speaker 5: And if you look at our state legislature, one of
10:17
Speaker 5: the really great rules that we have as the single
10:19
Speaker 5: issue rule. And what that does is it prevents this
10:21
Speaker 5: problem where everybody is voting on one thing. Right, Are
10:25
Speaker 5: we going to change this tax? Are we going to
10:27
Speaker 5: allow this behavior? Are we going to change this regulation?
10:30
Speaker 5: Instead of lumping them all together so that everyone can
10:33
Speaker 5: find something they like and everyone can find something they
10:35
Speaker 5: don't like, they legislate on individual issues. And if I
10:39
Speaker 5: think if our United States Congress were to move towards
10:42
Speaker 5: that sort of concept, a lot of these problems would
10:44
Speaker 5: be would be mitigated.
10:46
Speaker 3: If you were in DC, if you were in the
10:48
Speaker 3: seat of Senator Capito, or Senator Justice or.
10:52
Speaker 6: Which more or will not be.
10:54
Speaker 3: Okay, Well, I understand that, I understanding, But if you
10:57
Speaker 3: were to be in Washington, what would you be doing
11:00
Speaker 3: right now?
11:01
Speaker 6: What would I be doing?
11:03
Speaker 5: I would be doing every single thing that I could
11:07
Speaker 5: to convince people voting to shut the government down that
11:11
Speaker 5: there is a pathway for the issues that they find
11:14
Speaker 5: important on the other side of voting to reopen the government.
11:17
Speaker 5: And it's about building trust, and it's about building friendships,
11:20
Speaker 5: and it's about building an understanding that all of us
11:24
Speaker 5: are here to do a job, and the job is
11:26
Speaker 5: to run the federal government. And when one part of
11:30
Speaker 5: the government isn't completing that task, the rest of the
11:33
Speaker 5: government shuts down. And so I think you have to
11:36
Speaker 5: start convincing your colleagues that this idea that us not
11:43
Speaker 5: performing our most fundamental task is causing pain to American
11:46
Speaker 5: citizens is not appropriate. And you know, there's just a
11:52
Speaker 5: baseline level of achievement that has to happen in passing
11:55
Speaker 5: a budget is one of them.
11:56
Speaker 3: And I think what happens too and can we're talking
11:58
Speaker 3: to atourney Attorney General mccusky. I think what happens to
12:01
Speaker 3: people as just the kind of creatures we are. We're
12:05
Speaker 3: always worried about, well, what's it going to do to me,
12:08
Speaker 3: no matter whether it's this or whatever. And maybe right now,
12:11
Speaker 3: when you start looking at the federal government, you think, well,
12:14
Speaker 3: you know, this doesn't impact me. I get up and
12:16
Speaker 3: I go to work every day. And it's a fair point.
12:17
Speaker 3: I completely get that. But however, the longer this thing goes,
12:20
Speaker 3: it is going to impact everyone involved. And if you
12:24
Speaker 3: right now we're not seeing a lot of issues in
12:27
Speaker 3: West Virginia as far as air travel and stuff like that,
12:30
Speaker 3: we are going to It's going to happen eventually. I've
12:33
Speaker 3: got some friends that plan on a trip to Texas
12:37
Speaker 3: for Thanksgiving and they were saying, well, we may be
12:39
Speaker 3: looking at running a van and hauling the family down there, because.
12:42
Speaker 6: I striving to Texas before, and that's a long drive.
12:44
Speaker 3: It is a long drive. I've never done it, but
12:46
Speaker 3: I'm fully aware that it probably is. I think a
12:49
Speaker 3: lot of times people will see how does this affect me,
12:52
Speaker 3: and maybe maybe they'll react and care a little bit
12:55
Speaker 3: more then yeah.
12:55
Speaker 5: And I think on the other side of that, though,
12:57
Speaker 5: is that the power of incumbency is so strong in
13:00
Speaker 5: Congress that that we have this system, the situation where
13:03
Speaker 5: everyone likes their congressman, but they hate Congress.
13:06
Speaker 6: And so when you then go to.
13:08
Speaker 5: The ballot bruth you say, well, my person was doing
13:11
Speaker 5: a great job, but I hate all the rest of them, right,
13:14
Speaker 5: And so then the changes don't don't end up happening,
13:17
Speaker 5: and we end up with people who are there for
13:18
Speaker 5: a very, very long time. And you know, that used
13:21
Speaker 5: to be a situation where everyone had these wonderful relationships
13:24
Speaker 5: with each other. There were these long term friendships in Congress,
13:26
Speaker 5: and a lot of those internal relationships, especially across party lines,
13:30
Speaker 5: appear to have deteriorated.
13:31
Speaker 3: All Right, what's on the on the agenda the next
13:34
Speaker 3: couple of weeks for you for your office?
13:36
Speaker 5: Yeah, so I am speaking at a group called America's
13:40
Speaker 5: Power in d C. In a couple of weeks, and
13:42
Speaker 5: they're the pre eminent coal oriented power plant advocacy group.
13:48
Speaker 5: I have a speech at a place called the Federalist Society,
13:50
Speaker 5: which is a rule of law group, and we're talking
13:53
Speaker 5: about all of the incredible things that our office is
13:55
Speaker 5: doing on the energy front. I have just an enormous
14:01
Speaker 5: amount of work to do in the office, so we
14:03
Speaker 5: have to we have a case that involves drug prices.
14:06
Speaker 5: It's something called three point forty B that we're working
14:08
Speaker 5: really hard on. We're spending a lot of time on
14:10
Speaker 5: these vaccine cases and preparing, like I said before, for
14:15
Speaker 5: a United States Supreme Court argument.
14:16
Speaker 6: Is no small task.
14:18
Speaker 3: What goes into that, what goes into that at the
14:21
Speaker 3: kitchen table is night with the index cards.
14:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, it would, yeah, kind of. It's a little bit
14:27
Speaker 5: more involved than that.
14:28
Speaker 3: There's just about two hundred people doing that with you.
14:30
Speaker 5: It's mostly about research and then it's about practice. So
14:34
Speaker 5: we do these things called moot courts where we find
14:36
Speaker 5: really really good lawyers from all around the country who
14:38
Speaker 5: will act as the Supreme Court justices and then find
14:41
Speaker 5: somebody to act as the lawyer on the other side.
14:43
Speaker 5: And so you practice the arguments so that when you
14:46
Speaker 5: get into the actual room in the Supreme Court, you're
14:50

18:39
Speaker 3: Pecozy joined us now. Bill, Good morning, Welcome to the show.
18:42
Speaker 3: Good morning, Thanks for having me, Thanks.
18:44
Speaker 4: For being here.
18:44
Speaker 3: I want to talk about how you got in to
18:46
Speaker 3: this whole promotions business. To begin with, It's a wild,
18:49
Speaker 3: wild world and yours started with the circus.
18:52
Speaker 4: Talk about it well, actually, my grandfather, which scepting my
18:57
Speaker 4: grandfather was the biggest promote in the United States back
19:01
Speaker 4: in the twenties and thirties, and he owned a big
19:04
Speaker 4: circus in a carnival and he had to rent forty
19:07
Speaker 4: four railroad cars to travel with all his equipment around
19:10
Speaker 4: the United States to the shows. My mother was part
19:14
Speaker 4: of that, and she was a vaudeville star. A lot
19:18
Speaker 4: of people remember Judy Garland, which became a big star
19:21
Speaker 4: during that time, and she was my mother's warm up
19:24
Speaker 4: act and they both traveled with Bob Hope during the
19:27
Speaker 4: USO shows us during the World War Two. So I
19:32
Speaker 4: grew up in the show business ever since. I was
19:35
Speaker 4: a kid on the West Side.
19:37
Speaker 3: And so I guess if your parents threatened you and
19:39
Speaker 3: said we're going to send you off to the circus,
19:41
Speaker 3: it was a real possibility for you.
19:43
Speaker 4: Right, absolutely, absolutely so every summer I was never home.
19:49
Speaker 4: I was born and raised on the West Side, and
19:51
Speaker 4: my mother and father owned a carnival and we traveled
19:53
Speaker 4: throughout the state of West Virginia, mostly Ohio and Kentucky,
19:57
Speaker 4: and went to school at alsin Catholic High school and
20:04
Speaker 4: didn't know what my direction in life was. When I
20:06
Speaker 4: was a senior, I didn't know what I wanted to do.
20:08
Speaker 4: I played football at West Virginia State and got into
20:12
Speaker 4: a reconditioning shop business. I don't know how I came
20:15
Speaker 4: up with that idea, but I was the first in
20:17
Speaker 4: West Virginia to do that. And what that means is
20:20
Speaker 4: I would take a used car, use truck from a
20:23
Speaker 4: car dealer, take it to my shop and clean it,
20:27
Speaker 4: steam clean the engine, blax, a complete detail, you know,
20:31
Speaker 4: detail shop exactly. And I was making a lot of
20:34
Speaker 4: money and I quit college, and of course, three years later,
20:39
Speaker 4: excuse me, three months later, after I dropped out of college,
20:41
Speaker 4: I got drafted and spent a year in Vietnam as
20:45
Speaker 4: a veteran and so really involved in helping veterans here
20:50
Speaker 4: in West Virginia. I do that without announcing it too much.
20:55
Speaker 4: And then from there I bought my first neighborhood bar,
20:58
Speaker 4: the Anchor over on West Side, and it just like
21:02
Speaker 4: snowballed into other clubs and I bought the old Customer Theater,
21:05
Speaker 4: which I used to pay a quarter to go to
21:08
Speaker 4: when I was a kid. And I remember one day
21:11
Speaker 4: in the two way mirror office that I had, saying,
21:14
Speaker 4: I can't believe that I bought this theater after going
21:17
Speaker 4: to it, you know. So it just seems like God
21:21
Speaker 4: blessed me and almost everything I did turned to gold.
21:24
Speaker 4: And I used how I got in a promotion business
21:27
Speaker 4: to answer your question is, while I was that part
21:30
Speaker 4: of my life, I started getting phone calls for people
21:33
Speaker 4: wanting to book bands, and I would tell them, I says,
21:37
Speaker 4: I don't book bands, I hire them, you know at
21:40
Speaker 4: Capital City Janbury, which I turned the theater into. Well,
21:44
Speaker 4: actually I bought it from Jim Cunningham. He started it
21:46
Speaker 4: and I bought it from him. Every Friday night was
21:49
Speaker 4: top bluegrass axe from around the country, and every Saturday
21:52
Speaker 4: night was country artists. And I had a lot of
21:55
Speaker 4: people from he Hall and whoever whoever. I booked them.
22:00
Speaker 4: And so I went to Ned Guthrie, who was the
22:04
Speaker 4: president of the local Musicians Union here in Charleston, and
22:10
Speaker 4: I asked myself, I'm getting a lot of calls I'm
22:12
Speaker 4: booking bands. How can I get into that? He says,
22:15
Speaker 4: What's very easy. You become a talent agency and you
22:18
Speaker 4: signed the bands up as under exclusive contract and you'll
22:22
Speaker 4: make a percentage on every time they play. That's what
22:25
Speaker 4: I did, and I signed up about eighty two bands
22:28
Speaker 4: and was making a lot of money and being in
22:30
Speaker 4: the club business. From there, I bought another club, and
22:33
Speaker 4: then I bought the King's Inn over on Patrick Street,
22:38
Speaker 4: and I came up with a wild idea of having
22:42
Speaker 4: Ladies Night on Tuesday night. And I thought, well, wherever
22:45
Speaker 4: the ladies are, the mental come and we could get
22:48
Speaker 4: fourteen hundred people in this place. And I sponsored eight
22:52
Speaker 4: bowling teams over right across the street at the Bowling Alley,
22:56
Speaker 4: and bands six nights a week. And something I did
23:00
Speaker 4: never get away with nowadays is Coder Tile on Friday
23:05
Speaker 4: and Saturday night. No blue jeans and no tennis shoes
23:08
Speaker 4: anytime to get in. And of course I had the
23:11
Speaker 4: monopoly on the club business during that time. The only
23:15
Speaker 4: competition I had, and really wasn't a competition, it was
23:18
Speaker 4: the growing twenties over on Hell Street. So that's how
23:22
Speaker 4: my life started. And then I started promoting shows at
23:26
Speaker 4: the theater that I owned, and then each stepped with
23:30
Speaker 4: further and bigger ax from Kentucky Headhunters to Confederate Railroad,
23:37
Speaker 4: all the Charlie Rich you name it. I've done over
23:41
Speaker 4: five hundred major shows in the last fifty years. So
23:44
Speaker 4: that's how I started in the promotion business.
23:46
Speaker 3: And eventually you kind of transition because you know, and
23:49
Speaker 3: we'll talk about your book in a moment, Bill, but
23:50
Speaker 3: I know you had relationships with people like Muhammad Ali
23:53
Speaker 3: and Pete Rose that you brought to town. Talk about
23:55
Speaker 3: some of those.
23:56
Speaker 4: Yes, Well, how Muhammad Ali came out was Jerry, which
24:03
Speaker 4: was a sergeant at the Charleston Police Department. They sponsored
24:07
Speaker 4: the Golden Gloves here at Charleston, and he says, Bill,
24:10
Speaker 4: it's a dying and we need a big promotion this
24:13
Speaker 4: year to keep it above water. So I came up
24:18
Speaker 4: with the idea of what do I need to do
24:21
Speaker 4: to bring a lot of people to the Civic Center
24:24
Speaker 4: and I I went out on a limb and said, well,
24:28
Speaker 4: I'm going to bring Muhammad Ali here and everything everybody
24:34
Speaker 4: thought I was crazy. I locked him in, told him
24:38
Speaker 4: that we needed help here, and I went to WHS
24:45
Speaker 4: this is a funny story about your station and John
24:47
Speaker 4: Dickens sheets, which him and I became very good friends.
24:50
Speaker 4: I love John. I said, Hey, how would you like
24:54
Speaker 4: to sponsor Muhammad Ali? Being at the Golden Gloves. He says, well,
24:58
Speaker 4: you're crazy. He says, you can't bring my Mohammad Ali here.
25:01
Speaker 4: I said, John, have I ever misled you? He says,
25:05
Speaker 4: I just don't believe you. So I said, Okay, you're
25:08
Speaker 4: gonna will You're gonna be sorry. And of course I
25:10
Speaker 4: did bring Muhammad al here Ali to the gold in
25:13
Speaker 4: one year was this? Uh, this was probably eighty I'm
25:18
Speaker 4: gonna say eighty six. Get a little older some of
25:21
Speaker 4: my mind.
25:21
Speaker 3: Yees I understood, understood eighty six. Okay, we'll go with that.
25:25
Speaker 4: Yeah and uh. And ever since then, every time John
25:31
Speaker 4: Dickens see the Muhammed Ali's name would come up, all
25:35
Speaker 4: he would do is bragg on Bill Bercoe's and listen,
25:37
Speaker 4: he says, I'll never doubt Bill because he ever again,
25:39
Speaker 4: if he tells you something, you can take it to
25:41
Speaker 4: the bank.
25:42
Speaker 9: Uh.
25:43
Speaker 4: And I appreciate that with John. But so Ali came in.
25:47
Speaker 4: And then the next thing I know, I get a
25:49
Speaker 4: call from Dutch Miller in Huntington and he was a
25:53
Speaker 4: big backer of the Golden Gloves with his car dealer
25:57
Speaker 4: who was a big a fight fan. And he called me.
26:03
Speaker 4: He says, listen, can you bring Ali down to Huntington
26:07
Speaker 4: for the Golden Gloves like you did Charleston. And of
26:10
Speaker 4: course I raised over thirty thousand dollars went to the
26:14
Speaker 4: Golden Gloves, and I says, okay. So I met with
26:18
Speaker 4: mister Miller and I says, I think we have a
26:21
Speaker 4: good chance. So, making a long story short, I set
26:24
Speaker 4: up a big one hundred dollars plate dinner fundraiser for
26:28
Speaker 4: the Little Gloves and I had Ali locked in. And
26:33
Speaker 4: not too long after that before I brought Ali down,
26:37
Speaker 4: and this event happened. Buster Douglas knocked out Tyson in Japan, Tokyo,
26:44
Speaker 4: and I got the bright idea, well, he's in Columbus.
26:49
Speaker 4: I'll give him a call see if he'll could come over.
26:52
Speaker 4: And I called and couldn't get him to the phone.
26:55
Speaker 4: So the next day I called him again. I said, listen,
26:58
Speaker 4: I have Muhammad Ali here and he wants to talk
27:00
Speaker 4: to Buster. And uh, And I was sit fibbling a
27:05
Speaker 4: little bit. I'm just a little bit.
27:07
Speaker 9: Yeah.
27:07
Speaker 4: You know, my mother always taught me, you know, it's
27:09
Speaker 4: still a good to lie. But if you're going to lie,
27:11
Speaker 4: tell a little phib that doesn't hurt anybody. I said, okay, Mom,
27:16
Speaker 4: I'll remember that. So Buster got on the phone. I says,
27:19
Speaker 4: I only be right back. I says, but he wants
27:22
Speaker 4: you to come to the Golden Gloves. We'll raise a
27:24
Speaker 4: lot of money. I says, uh uh. He says, well
27:27
Speaker 4: you will, you come and get me. I'll send I'll
27:29
Speaker 4: send a private jet over and get you. So, to
27:32
Speaker 4: make a long story short, we got Buster, Douglas and
27:35
Speaker 4: Ili in Huntington. It was a big, big event, a
27:39
Speaker 4: lot of money to the Golden Gloves.
27:41
Speaker 3: And uh so, what kind of guy was only away
27:44
Speaker 3: from the crowd.
27:45
Speaker 4: I was going to get into that. We we we
27:47
Speaker 4: became such good friends that I would bring him in.
27:52
Speaker 4: He said, Bill, whatever you want me to do. He
27:54
Speaker 4: loved chocolate, chocolate cake, and we got to be so many.
27:58
Speaker 4: He a lot of times with fly in and stay
28:01
Speaker 4: at my house for two or three days. He loved
28:02
Speaker 4: the state of West Virginia. A lot of stories in
28:05
Speaker 4: my book about Ali and Tonny Hauntsecker, which was his
28:08
Speaker 4: first professional opponent. That he would never charge me for
28:13
Speaker 4: appearance of a show that I would do and fly
28:16
Speaker 4: pay for his own way in. That's how close we became.
28:20
Speaker 4: But very kind, great humanitarian. I always used to say,
28:25
Speaker 4: Jimmy Carter probably wasn't the best president that we had,
28:29
Speaker 4: but he was a great humanitarian. And Ali was the
28:31
Speaker 4: same thing. And I remember one time we were flying
28:35
Speaker 4: from here to Atlanta and we were on our way
28:38
Speaker 4: down to Florida and he wouldn't get on the connecting
28:42
Speaker 4: flight because there was kids still wanting autographs. I says, Ali,
28:46
Speaker 4: we're going to miss the flight. He'd go like this
28:49
Speaker 4: and taking it off. He he loved love kids, and
28:55
Speaker 4: you know, him and I used to have a lot
28:56
Speaker 4: of conversations about him not wanting to go into service.
29:03
Speaker 4: I was going to ask you, have you been a
29:04
Speaker 4: Vietnam veteran? Was that a sore spot for you? It
29:07
Speaker 4: was in the beginning, and you know, I couldn't understand
29:10
Speaker 4: why he wouldn't. I told him, I says Ali. A
29:12
Speaker 4: lot of times we'd be in my living room and
29:14
Speaker 4: be baby two o'clock in the morning, just him and I.
29:17
Speaker 4: I says, Ali, you know, as a veteran, I've got
29:19
Speaker 4: a bad taste in my mouth about you not going
29:22
Speaker 4: into the service. I says, you're a big celebrity, You're
29:24
Speaker 4: not going to go to Vietnam. You're gonna probably do
29:26
Speaker 4: a tour of different bases and you know, goodwill tour
29:30
Speaker 4: and promote the United States and the service. Uh So
29:35
Speaker 4: we did have some back and forth on that, and
29:37
Speaker 4: then I remember one morning, two in the morning, I say,
29:42
Speaker 4: you know, all you did was run your mouth. He says,
29:44
Speaker 4: you don't understand. There was one reason why I ran
29:47
Speaker 4: my mouth, and he went like this to me, I
29:49
Speaker 4: just can't see it, but I'm putting my fingers together. Money, money, money,
29:53
Speaker 4: he says. The more I ran my mouth, more people
29:55
Speaker 4: wanted to see my ass get kicked. So how did
29:58
Speaker 4: you go from that into over the last couple of years.
30:00
Speaker 4: When I first met you, you were doing you know
30:02
Speaker 4: and still do rib Fast and things of that nature.
30:04
Speaker 3: So that just kind of goes along with the whole
30:05
Speaker 3: promotions thing.
30:06
Speaker 4: I guess, right, Well, yeah, I've been told by my
30:11
Speaker 4: agent and other people in the promotion business. You know,
30:15
Speaker 4: you had Don King and Bob Aaron doing boxing. They're
30:18
Speaker 4: noted for that, that's what they do. You have Jim
30:22
Speaker 4: McMahon that does the rastling mince mcman. Yeah. Uh yeah,
30:28
Speaker 4: it sounds like I'm bragging. I'm just stating the facts,
30:30
Speaker 4: you know. I did boxing, I've done wrastling, I've done
30:33
Speaker 4: arch and crafts. I've done sports shows, I've done music concerts.
30:37
Speaker 4: You name the type of promotion and I've done it,
30:41
Speaker 4: which I'm very proud of. So how the book came
30:44
Speaker 4: about is my daughter, So Dad, you ought to you
30:49
Speaker 4: want to write a book about this? And that's how
30:52
Speaker 4: that got started. Where will the book be available? Is
30:54
Speaker 4: it out now or the book is I'm holding it
30:57
Speaker 4: in my hand as you can see it. We're gonna
30:59
Speaker 4: I'm gonna be featured author of Headline Books the publishing
31:04
Speaker 4: company at the West Virginia Book Show at the Charleston
31:07
Speaker 4: Civic Center this Saturday, and I'll be they can get
31:10
Speaker 4: the book there and I'll be signing the book from
31:14
Speaker 4: probably nine thirty to five pm all day on Saturday.
31:17

38:35
Speaker 14: City, well it's a. Huge it's a huge deal for
38:38
Speaker 14: a couple of. Reasons AND i want to preface this by,
38:40
Speaker 14: saying just so everyone is, clear you're not going to
38:42
Speaker 14: See Simone biles In, Charleston West virginia next. Summer but
38:45
Speaker 14: what we do have is this is the. Pipeline so
38:48
Speaker 14: when you watch The olympics or you watch gymnastics on
38:51
Speaker 14: television and you see these athletes Like Simone, biles this
38:54
Speaker 14: is the pipeline that got them to where they are.
38:56
Speaker 14: Today so what you're going to see In charleston is
38:59
Speaker 14: again these kids that are, young that are growing in the.
39:02
Speaker 14: Sport they're In charleston to compete for a national. Championship
39:06

39:09
Speaker 14: you may see ON, tv maybe even as soon as
39:12
Speaker 14: twenty twenty eight In Los angeles for The Olympic. Games but,
39:15
Speaker 14: yeah it's a big deal because this is the. Pipeline
39:18
Speaker 14: and AGAIN i can't stress enough it's another governing body
39:21
Speaker 14: that we're developing relationships with and when they have a
39:24
Speaker 14: good experience In, charleston they bring more events to us
39:27
Speaker 14: and they also tell other sports about what a great host. City,
