- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:12episodes three forty eight, three forty nine, and three fifty Appearing from the
- 0:19Sky, That Man is the Humming Swordsman, Lufy's emergency situation, the Ultimate
- 0:25Shadows Destination, and the Warrior known as the Devil the moment of Oars Arrival.
- 0:36In these episodes, we find out exactly how the whole deal works with
- 0:41taking somebody's shadow away, and it turns out that I was like a little
- 0:46bit right and also a little bit wrong in terms of how that works.
- 0:51I'm still a little bit confused. I'm going to ask for clarification. Welcome
- 0:57to spoil Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank
- 1:19you very much to the One Piece crew for commissioning this episode. I had
- 1:23to push back for personal reasons involving the puppies yet again, so I appreciate
- 1:30everybody's being patient on that. I really do. And I also wanted to
- 1:34mention really quickly Florian had gotten in touch about doing some more Wannabe episodes,
- 1:40and I have gotten bookings that block that time from being available because it's a
- 1:46little bit like more work to set up. It's more work to edit,
- 1:49and we want to talk for longer than an hour usually, But because I
- 1:55am dealing with having to pay for these puppies treatments, I am thinking that
- 2:00I may just like add some extra time to a day or two here and
- 2:05there. So if you want to get in touch, I mention message this
- 2:09to you as well, Florian. I won't have any openings to do that
- 2:14until July, but I think you're like booked into July anyway, so it
- 2:16won't be that much of a weight. So just we'll figure something out.
- 2:22But you just need to get the dates straight when those have when you want
- 2:24to have them. So okay, talking about these episodes we are, I'm
- 2:31really enjoying these still. I really enjoy their being like more lore. I'm
- 2:38not like a huge, huge fan of Lore as a rule, like that
- 2:43can be a thing that certain people just get boners for really hard, and
- 2:49it's the sort of thing where I appreciate they're being like rules, but I
- 2:53don't really get too into the weeds on it because they're you know, there's
- 2:58a reason this summarily and this like is there are folks out there who just
- 3:01want to know every little thing and I find it kind of fascinating the way
- 3:07that people get caught up in, especially like fictional histories. But that said,
- 3:17this universe is it's got its own lore for sure, but it also
- 3:25will kind of like throw everything into the air occasionally, and the addition of
- 3:31new lure is sometimes like quite confusing. For example, Loofy going to like
- 3:40gear two and Gear three we saw that back at Ennis Lobby. We haven't
- 3:46seen it since it's not really explained well why he's able to do it,
- 3:53And that whole thing felt really like I'm putting it out there because I want
- 4:00to be able to use this later, but I don't have it fully thought
- 4:03out yet. There's just a feel and I don't That may not necessarily be
- 4:06true, but the sense of it is extremely disorganized to me, and just
- 4:13kind of feels like it was poorly outlined on purpose so that they could go
- 4:16in whatever direction they sort of felt like later on, this is some lore
- 4:23that feels really direct. It's explained, and it's like, yeah, a
- 4:28lot of exposition, and I could see like some people getting a little bit
- 4:31irritated by that. Exposition. Is one of those things where a lot of
- 4:38critics and a lot of viewers will get really kind of snotty about having to
- 4:46include exposition in just like dialogue. There are times where I agree, but
- 4:53I am also somebody who really prefers to be working with as much information as
- 4:57I can, so I find it takes more or to irritate me in that
- 5:01department than it does the average person. So yeah, this whole like deal
- 5:09with the Shadows gets explained in a step by step way, with questions being
- 5:16asked and answered in a way that I just really appreciated because I was wondering
- 5:21a lot of these same things and not really getting what was you know.
- 5:27So it's a sort of a rare thing and the show will just drop stuff
- 5:32sometimes not explain it, and then they'll circle back ages later to explain it.
- 5:38I do appreciate this being explained within the same arc that it's happening in,
- 5:45you know what I'm saying. So, okay, appearing from the sky
- 5:48we are, Oh my god, you guys fucking Funnimation. Ugh. But
- 5:56I just had like the correct episode loaded it was, and then I just
- 6:00jumped into Funimation again and it's just like, first of all, not only
- 6:04have we jumped to the next episode, but we have gone to the very
- 6:09end of it, so it's almost over. So this the way that we
- 6:16start off. We had just left last time with Robin showing off that she
- 6:21can fly with the spider monkey falling off the bridge, and you know,
- 6:29all of our friends are like in this extremely sensitive position when we see a
- 6:34dude dropping down from the sky and I was like, I feel like that's
- 6:39a brook But what the hell is going on? And we see that it
- 6:41is indeed Brooke, but the whole vibe is surprising. So let's start off
- 6:50with some things here, because you all know that I have to address what
- 6:55we've got going on with Nami. The thing with Nami and Lola, the
- 7:01pig, the bore, the hog, whatever they call her. Nami protests
- 7:11that Lola has nothing to worry about regarding her and absalom because she is actually
- 7:20a man cross dressing, and you know what, you know, I don't
- 7:30love this. I just don't like the very fact that it's like, oh,
- 7:35well, you know, I'm a guy cross dressing, so obviously I'm
- 7:39not a romantic possibility is already just like but maybe you still are though,
- 7:46like why not? And also the fact that I was kind of failing relieved
- 7:54when this goes on and mostly focuses on Lola being relieved and what she's been
- 7:59trying to do to like capture Absalom, And it didn't seem like we were
- 8:03going to get any further transphobic jokes or anything. But then there's a moment
- 8:09where we're in Topper's head and he thinks to himself, no wonder she looks
- 8:15so manly, which is just one of those things that's like, there's this
- 8:20whole thing with transphobes where they really think that they can quote tell that somebody
- 8:26is trans, and it has led to this policing of the bodies of SIS
- 8:33women as well, because they're SIS women who fall well outside the lines of
- 8:39what we have decided is actually feminine, and so people will just jump down
- 8:45the throats of any woman who doesn't fall within those guidelines and accuse her of
- 8:50being trans when they're like completely incorrect. So it just goes to show how
- 9:00like blurred the lines with gender actually are because appearance varies wildly, and just
- 9:07because somebody doesn't fall within your ideal doesn't mean that like you can tell anything
- 9:15about the rest of who they are or how they were born or anything.
- 9:20And it's just really like tedious that we have this moment of like, oh
- 9:24yeah, I can see it, and the irony of it being that he
- 9:30is saying that and we know Nami is lying, so he's doing the very
- 9:35thing of like I could I could tell, No, you couldn't, Like
- 9:39people can't just stop it, you know. And it also like even if
- 9:43you can't tell that somebody is trans, fucking literally so what like so what
- 9:52you know, there's so much pressure on trans people to pass and be undetectable,
- 9:58and you you know, we're putting the same like gross misogynist expectations on
- 10:05trans women so that they get to be fucking miserable and self conscious about the
- 10:11same ships as women are. Oh yay, what it's delightful gift, Like
- 10:16we would also like to be free of this. So can we please do
- 10:20our transistors a favor and not put them up to the same standard that we
- 10:26also are fucking sick of and don't want to be held up to anymore?
- 10:28Can we just not have this be a thing anymore? It's the same as
- 10:35like seeing masculinity as being a neutral and so anybody whose non binary is expected
- 10:41to perform like more masculinity in their androgyny than femininity, because androgyny almost is
- 10:52never particularly feminine, you know, it tends to be coded as very men
- 11:00skill in. And so there's a lot of nonbinary people as well who feel
- 11:03like they have to like perform this particular look for folks to believe that they
- 11:07are nonbinary, and it's maybe just not their look. Man, maybe that's
- 11:13just not there esthetic and that's fine. So anyway, you know, I
- 11:18have to address that. But I was really grateful that comment from Chopper seems
- 11:26to be it. And I don't know if it's going to come up later
- 11:30because I have to assume it will. But in these three episodes, that's
- 11:35the last of the commentary we get on the Nami is actually a man joke,
- 11:41and from here on we have Nami pretending to be friends with Lola and
- 11:46like encouraging her to be more aggressive with Absalom. I loved this so much.
- 11:56There is no quicker way to my heart than having two male characters who
- 12:01are at each other's throats suddenly become friends. And this is a big favorite
- 12:07of mine. With a crazy ex girlfriend by the way. But even though
- 12:13it's fake, you know, I know Namie is just doing this so that
- 12:18this maniac bore zombie creature doesn't try to murder her anymore. It's still just
- 12:26kind of heartwarming, Like I just really enjoyed getting to see this creature,
- 12:31who obviously is quite lonely, be like connecting with Nami and trying to get
- 12:41advice from her and attempt to be vulnerable with her in a way. Namie
- 12:48tells her like, you should totally hook up. You were made for each
- 12:52other. You see Lola's sword just hit the ground. And then we get
- 12:58Lola and she's like, nobody has ever offered me a single word of encouragement
- 13:05this whole time. You don't know how much it means. And when I
- 13:11love this so much. When Nami stands up and introduces herself, she calls
- 13:18herself Nami Zo, I think. But she holds out her hand and in
- 13:24Lola's eyes, she's like surrounded by sparkles and in really sort of like fogging
- 13:30lighting, and she says something. Lola says, I'll hug him so hard
- 13:39that I almost crack his ribs and he'll just be like whatever about it.
- 13:43And I don't know why the I think the transition for this voice actor is
- 13:50killing me so bad, because Lola has had all such exaggerated dialogue. It's
- 14:00been a lot of screaming, a lot of gruffness under her voice to sort
- 14:07of emphasize her fearsomeness and how aggressive she's being. And then all of a
- 14:16sudden, this scene with Nami. She sounds like Robin. She sounds like
- 14:20the same voice actress, and I'm not sure it is, but it is.
- 14:26It doesn't sound like the same person, And I just find that really
- 14:31funny and sweet. And I love seeing us Up and Chopper off to the
- 14:35side, watching the two of them have a conversation and be very nonplussed about
- 14:39it. I do enjoy too, Chopper like buying into the fact that Nami
- 14:45is a man, and Usup looking at Chopper and just saying, are you
- 14:50kidding me? Like he can't believe us Up is falling for or can't believe
- 14:52Chopper's falling for it, which is wild because us Up tends to be just
- 14:56as gullible as Chopper. But I think it's supposed to be. Unfortunately that
- 15:05he got a really really good look at Nami in the shower and he has
- 15:09no doubts on you know, that front whatever. But yeah, this uh,
- 15:18this bit is very like amusing the two of them under this giant parasol,
- 15:24just gossiping about Absalom and us up hadn't even been sure it was going
- 15:28to work, and seeing how kind of flawless this is. They're under this
- 15:33parasol by the way, guys, because they're sitting at like a cafe table
- 15:37with a little parasol on the on the top, and Lola's head is like
- 15:43mashed up underneath the parasol and like moving it around every time she turns her
- 15:48head. It's really funny. I just there this whole scene like transphobic jokes
- 15:56aside. I really liked the direction this went because I didn't see it coming
- 16:00that they were going to be able to like kind of weirdly be buddies.
- 16:04And y'all know that Absalom is just such a total creepster and I hate him
- 16:10so much that there being this creature that's coming at him the way he's coming
- 16:17at Nami is extremely gratifying to me. So I'm just into it and I
- 16:23love her saying. Nami says to us Up, she's not such a bad
- 16:29girl. You just have to get to know her a bit, but when
- 16:30she turns and looks at him, she's got the Barry signs in her eyes.
- 16:37So she was trying to question Lola about like where the treasure might be
- 16:41in the castle. We don't really see any of that conversation, and I'm
- 16:45assuming based on the way that she looks here that she got some info on
- 16:51that, but we didn't get to see it. So we'll, you know,
- 16:56potentially wind up finding treasure or we'll Nami going off by herself in order
- 17:02to track it down, but as of right now, I don't know any
- 17:07more about it than I did before. So then we go to Lufy and
- 17:12he is kept in this cage. This is the first time that he sees
- 17:19what's his face? Help me out, guys, I keep forgetting the name
- 17:22of this big bad with the shadow stealing, but he is looming over Lufy,
- 17:33and in true form, I appreciate that Lufy has to just immediately be
- 17:37like you must eat a lah huh, you're pretty round and isn't intimidated by
- 17:45this dude at all, because it's not that Lufy doesn't ever get intimidated,
- 17:52it's that he has a really different metric for what causes him to be intimidated
- 17:56than other people have. So I will be like, that feels really threatening,
- 18:02yikes, and he'll breathe right past that because that's not something he in
- 18:06particular needs to worry about. But then something that I'm just like, well,
- 18:08yeah, that's sort of how people work. Because he's a child and
- 18:12forgets about grown ups and how they work, he will be taken off guard.
- 18:21So Geko Moria, thank you, Demi, and Demian says, I
- 18:26think the joke here is a continuation of the one where Chopper is both gullible
- 18:30and also terrible at identifying people because he isn't human and does not really have
- 18:33the brain features used by humans to identify each other. He can't tell that
- 18:37Soga King is usap after all. I think that's part of the joke,
- 18:41you know, I mean definitely. So this we go to Pirona and she
- 18:52is watching them unload their entire ship. Y'all. This was so offensive to
- 19:00me, truly crossing a line, like I can't they just got that ship,
- 19:11you know what I'm saying, Like it's it's barely been on the sea,
- 19:15and the fact that we are already getting completely looted. I am disgusted.
- 19:25She in Pirona's like mad because there's not treasure. There was some money
- 19:29laying around, but it's not what she was hoping for. And she is
- 19:36also a little bit like, if this is the guy who beat Crocodile and
- 19:40apparently went up against the world government, you would really think that he would
- 19:45have some money on him, Like, I don't get what the deal is
- 19:48with being a pirate. If you don't have treasure, that's the point of
- 19:53being a pirate, So what's the deal? And she has a bunch of
- 20:00bombies unloading, so she's talking to one of them about it, and they
- 20:03do have a ton of food, so that's all being unloaded, you guys,
- 20:08know how, like completely personally, I take that. Also, I
- 20:14can't with the stealing of food, and I am exceptionally irritated already, especially
- 20:19considering that I know the food is all just going to be like poured onto
- 20:25tables and stuff, because what's her face has this aversion aversion to plates.
- 20:30So this is when hild And flies down and says that the boss is calling
- 20:37for a meeting of the mysterious three straw hat Loofy has been captured. This
- 20:44will be the debut of the nine hundred, and we don't find out what
- 20:52the nine hundred is until later, but it turns out spoilers, it is
- 21:00a giant basically a giant zombie. And I'm sure there's going to be other
- 21:07info we find out about it, but really that's kind of all I need
- 21:11to know at this point. It is humongous. And the whole way the
- 21:17thing works with like stealing people's shadows is you take their like personality and abilities
- 21:26with the shadow. That's what gets sort of pulled out and it gets put
- 21:33into a zombie. But the zombie's body is the limitation to the shadows abilities.
- 21:45In other words, if you put Zoro's shadow into the body of a
- 21:51zombie that was like, not as strong, he wouldn't be able to do
- 21:57what he does. We wouldn't see the zombie be able to fully exploit its
- 22:03abilities. And thus the stronger the sort of like spirit or consciousness of the
- 22:10person that gets their shadow taken, the stronger a body you want to put
- 22:15them in. And what this dude, Geko Moriah is thinking is that if
- 22:22Luthy has this incredibly high bounty, then he must have a lot of ability.
- 22:27So if we put his personality inside of this enormous giant. This will
- 22:37be like an unstoppable like killing machine that I can control, which I'm really
- 22:45curious because like, I don't I know, we have talked about the abilities
- 22:53that people have, like Sanji and Zoro, right, they're both really good
- 22:59fighters, but they have neither of them had a devil fruit, so their
- 23:03abilities are in the rules of this universe, obtained through constant practice and dedication.
- 23:11It is not a magically endowed superpower. So if Lufie's power is via
- 23:18devil fruit, does that go with his shadow? Will this giant be able
- 23:23to stretch like rubber and have all of the same limitations? Because I feel
- 23:29like I don't want that. I feel what for me, it seems as
- 23:36if the devil fruit affects people's bodies. It seems to me more than anything
- 23:45that their personalities don't necessarily change their goals and their abilities are based on what
- 23:56they can do physically. So personally, if I were creating this lore,
- 24:03I would think that that wouldn't work. But it's also not super interesting if
- 24:11it doesn't work, you know, like I could see just being like,
- 24:17well, of course we're going to make it work. We want to see
- 24:19weird zombies with the same powers as our friends, Like, that's what we're
- 24:22here for. And I get that, you know. And I'm not even
- 24:26like saying that I wouldn't that I would side Ie if it turned out that's
- 24:30how it worked. I'm just saying, like, there's a difference between doing
- 24:37what I think thematically sort of makes sense with the rules and doing what is
- 24:41the most fun that, however, you could have some fun with the option
- 24:48of it doesn't go with the shadow because Geko Moria is operating with this assumption
- 24:56purely that Lufy has this incredibly bounty because of his abilities, and I you
- 25:03know, at the time when their bounties were mentioned, I full on thought
- 25:06it was just, oh, we're going to turn them in and get the
- 25:07money. It didn't occur to me that they were seeing those barry amounts and
- 25:12going, oh, well, if it's like that with these guys, then
- 25:17they definitely are worth stealing their souls. You know, I didn't even occur
- 25:23to me. But if Geko Moria thinks that Lufy is just a powerful person
- 25:36and doesn't get how much of it is from devil fruits, and it doesn't
- 25:41carry over with the shadow. Seeing this giant with Lufy's personality but not any
- 25:51of his devil fruit powers is gonna be really Oh dear, I just realize
- 26:02that we have all of the food from the sunny that just got brought ashore.
- 26:07I feel like that food isn't long for this world. The amount that
- 26:12Lufy can put away in his fucking human body, human ish body is truly
- 26:18beyond belief. If he's a giant, then this entire island is about to
- 26:25just be eaten. Like, is he gonna want to eat people? Is
- 26:30he gonna be able to tell a difference? That's the thing too, is
- 26:32like you can take a person's personality and their abilities with their shadow, but
- 26:38as much as there is a fraction of them that's sort of left inside,
- 26:42it's not fully aware of itself, and so not everything about their personality necessarily
- 26:51remains. It's just sort of their driving force. So Zoro's driving force is
- 26:56to sword fight, Sanji's driving force is to protect women. Lucy's driving force,
- 27:02I really feel like I don't want it to be eating. I want
- 27:07it to be to protect his friends. But also I'm not sure if he's
- 27:11going to be able to tell whose friends are anymore because everything gets sort of
- 27:15foggy. And we also find out that if the body of the people whose
- 27:23shadows have been taken, if the body dies, then those people their shadows
- 27:32disappear as well. Like the shadow is only sustained by the living being who
- 27:37would have been throwing that shadow. And if it disappears, if the body
- 27:45is killed and the shadow disappears, the zombies just go limp and just collapse
- 27:49and are nothing anymore. They're just husks until you, I guess, put
- 27:53another soul into it. I don't know how long you've got before it starts
- 27:56to go bad. But this so I found that really interesting because I think
- 28:03it's a spider Monkey later who's explaining a lot of this stuff. Or no,
- 28:07no, no, it's not Spider Monkey starts like taunting them and telling
- 28:10them some things, and then it's Broke eventually, who like really gives them
- 28:14the information. And by them, I mean he's mostly talking to Robin and
- 28:19Frankie later on about all of this. So the whole deal with the shadows
- 28:27and the fact that like people have been separated from them, that has been
- 28:33sort of difficult for me. This is what I wanted to ask you guys
- 28:37about because we have run into dudes who haven't got their shadows. But from
- 28:44what we have seen, taking the shadows supposedly like takes your consciousness with it,
- 28:52and yet we've still got guys who are wandering around without their shadows and
- 28:57seemed to be them elves still, so is the shadow? Does it just
- 29:03take like a copy of your personality and abilities? When it gets taken,
- 29:11Initially you get knocked out. That's how we saw a Sangi and Zoro both
- 29:18just like on the floor unconscious, and that is a side effect to having
- 29:23it removed, just like the shock of it. And then I'm assuming you
- 29:33wake up, because these other guys are up and they are awake, and
- 29:38they're wandering around trying to find a solution to this problem, and they don't
- 29:42have their shadows, but they know what to do to get them back.
- 29:45So I guess that we're getting a copy and not a complete removal from the
- 29:55original body, which means that eventually our friends are gonna wake up and maybe
- 30:03have to fight weird zombie versions of themselves, which would be a real trip.
- 30:10I would be down to see that. I'm just saying, so,
- 30:15okay, they're they're stealing all the food. I'm very irritated about it.
- 30:21Then we have fucking Geka Moria says that he is going to be the King
- 30:33of the Pirates, and it's hilarious because you could not have thought of a
- 30:38more enraging thing to tell Lufy, the idea that you're going to try and
- 30:42take his spot. So it just gets like, we just get this close
- 30:48up of Lufy's extremely angry face from behind the helmet because he's still wearing that
- 30:56ridiculous armor that's like weirdly oversized, and then we cut away, and I
- 31:03really wanted the immediate gratification. We find out later that he's just like,
- 31:07yeah, that is not going to be you. But I had sort of
- 31:10hoped that he was just going to explode. So we of course have to
- 31:17continue with the hide and seek from Absalom. He's wandering around also trying to
- 31:22escape Lola, and everybody is running away from Absalom as he's coming close,
- 31:29and they just jump into this like open thing and zip it closed, and
- 31:37all of a sudden it stands up and it's Kumassy Kumassy the bear whose back
- 31:45was unzipped for some reason, and who is apparently hollow, which why not
- 31:53sure? You know, like all right, and he was just like sitting
- 31:59around playing Cat's Cradle and then like has these people inside him, but nobody
- 32:06wants to listen to him. So he's trying to explain to everyone that they
- 32:12are inside of him, but he's very slow about like bringing the words.
- 32:19He is just not really wanting to like interrupt or draw attention to himself by
- 32:24talking beyond when he's allowed, explicitly allowed. So every moment that he begins
- 32:31to say it, he gets cut off by somebody, whether it's Pirono or
- 32:37Absalom, and winds up just like keeping his mouth shut. And our friends
- 32:44are inside him as they are walking to see nine hundred. And I have
- 32:52you know, been really pleased throughout all of one piece at the the turn
- 33:00that characters who seem to be antagonists have played in becoming eventually, if not
- 33:09friends outright, then at least allies in their way. And because Kumassy is
- 33:16treated so badly by Pirona, I just really want him to get a little
- 33:22bit of his own back, and I would appreciate him switching sides just you
- 33:30know, just just a little bit. It doesn't have to be like a
- 33:35whole I'm going to join the crew now thing like with Frankie. But I
- 33:39would like for him to realize that the people that are inside him, who
- 33:45accidentally like jumped into his body and took it over in a way. I
- 33:50would like for them to for him to realize, like they're not being as
- 33:54mean to him as the people that he serves. But the problem is,
- 34:00I don't know how much control Kumbassy has because oh, you know, a
- 34:06lot of these things are just being controlled, and Kumascy feels like he is
- 34:14he falls a little bit outside of what a lot of the other zombies are
- 34:17like, but it's hard for me to tell, so I don't know if
- 34:22he is even capable of that, like how much of his own mind he
- 34:27has left. Florian says, yeah, you have it kind of right in
- 34:32terms of how it works, Sarah from CCS, it's just a copy.
- 34:36The initial knockout is just from the shock okay, cool m Florian says,
- 34:39this is Oda's way of the invisibility cloak over hearing the Oh yeah, that's
- 34:44a good point. That didn't occur to me, Like you're giving me ideas
- 34:51now, Florian I've been doing some things in the writing group on Discord where
- 34:55I'm posting like prompts for people to write to like exercise they're writing abilities and
- 35:00get themselves more in the spirit of writing with a bigger goal in mind.
- 35:07And writing a scene like that where you're trying to do an invisibility cloak but
- 35:13you're not would be a pretty fun prompt, Like, what's another way that
- 35:16you could do that? What's a way that you could be invisible for all
- 35:21intents and purposes and get the info that you need without their being the literal
- 35:28invisibility cloak. I'm gonna think on that one, Floria, that'd be a
- 35:31good prompt. So anyway, this poor guy is just he's just a little
- 35:38bit goofy now because he is attempting to contain them. He doesn't want to
- 35:45get in trouble by revealing the fact that they're in there, so you know,
- 35:49he has the same sort of concerns about their getting caught that they do,
- 35:57because I imagine he thinks at the at first he wants to try and
- 36:01tell everybody here's what's going on. But because they wind up being part of
- 36:07this, like going into the backstage area and seeing nine hundred, I'm pretty
- 36:13sure he feels he would be in big, big trouble if they all popped
- 36:19out, And so at this point, he's just like ready to save his
- 36:22own skin. He doesn't want to fucking have a lecture, so he's just
- 36:25going to keep it to himself. So all right, let's go over to
- 36:34Frankie and Robin, because they had been, you know, in their bad
- 36:38way. She flies away, we had the falling Swordsman, and then Frankie
- 36:45is like, well, I don't know where he came from, but I
- 36:46guess we have to go and save his ass. And then as they're talking,
- 36:52Frankie is still by the way, like hanging off the edge of the
- 36:53cliff. Then we get the spider monkey back. And I realized while watching
- 37:05it this time the monkeys saying monkey monkey is something that a friend of mine
- 37:15used to say all the time in that way. And I don't remember who
- 37:21it was, but I was like, why is this ringing a bell?
- 37:23And it must have been somebody who watched this show and this like kind of
- 37:28got in their head because it was frequent, and I didn't know what the
- 37:34hell they were referencing, you know, it was just one of those things.
- 37:37So the first time that the monkey says it, I'm just like,
- 37:39ah, god, this And then I stopped and I was like, what
- 37:43do I mean this? Like so many people do that. That's not a
- 37:47thing that people say. And it took me a minute to realize, like,
- 37:52oh, okay, that was a thing from somebody within the fandom before
- 37:58I understood what it even was. And they said it frequently enough that like,
- 38:01probably at least eight years later, I still remember that. But anyway,
- 38:10so Frankie is just like, well, I guess we are going to
- 38:15have to absolutely beat the shit out of this guy. Keep the spider busy,
- 38:20and I'm going to do a whole thing. He says that he's going
- 38:22to build a spider smasher. Here's the problem is that there are a lot
- 38:29of spiders, and they don't realize that quite yet because they're not all giant
- 38:34monkey spiders. They are mouse spiders, spider mice. And there's this moment,
- 38:45you guys, where Robin decides that she is going to fight back against
- 38:52the spider monkey by making tons of her arms pop out of his face,
- 38:59around own his eye and smack him in the eye. Okay, all I
- 39:07feel like we have officially crossed the line with what Robin can do. This
- 39:14is like horror movie shit. That is so upsetting. I mean it's it's
- 39:20because of how small she is in comparison, right, How like can Robin
- 39:27change the size of her arms. I'm feeling like her arms come out of
- 39:30the spider's face the same size that her arms actually are, but the spider
- 39:37is just enormous, so they look tiny, right. I want to make
- 39:39sure I've got that right, not that Robin can make tiny versions of her
- 39:46arms pop out of things, I think, right. I I'm just curious
- 39:54if we know, But you know, it doesn't necessarily matter. I just
- 40:00suddenly realized, like, I'm not sure if there's a restriction on that part
- 40:04or not. Florian says she grabbed a man's ball. As we've been here,
- 40:08I think incorrect. Florian, grabbing a man's balls, especially considering everything
- 40:17that was happening, just felt like the right choice. This feels like she
- 40:22had to be real cruel and unusual with the way that she was thinking about
- 40:25how this was going to work. There's a creativity to this, Like grabbing
- 40:30a man's balls, That's that's fucking basic. Amateur shit. You know,
- 40:34I love that we have it. It's great, but to a degree,
- 40:38it's just like, well, yeah, this with the eye is just it's
- 40:45like the thought she had to put into coming up with this. You you,
- 40:50she's just basically like, what if my arms were eyelashes? I hate
- 40:54it, Sarah fhim says, hey, if you can't do any real damage,
- 41:00just caused as much suffering as you can till it leaves you the fuck
- 41:04alone. Exactly. That's how like groups of birds work and whatnot. You
- 41:07know, they just are like, oh really you think no? And they
- 41:14are normal sized arms. Okay, cool. So she has his eye and
- 41:20she's like slapping his eyeball and he reaches up to try and stop her,
- 41:29but doesn't think about the fact that he's got spider webbing in his hands,
- 41:35so he basically webs up both of his own eyes. Which it's just ill,
- 41:45just ill to all of this. I hate it. Meanwhile, Frankie
- 41:50has decided to make a pair of nunchucks, but he has made each end
- 41:57of the nunchuck a piece of pillar from like the building, so it's these
- 42:06huge chunks that slam into this thing's head and it's like wondering how the hell
- 42:14Frankie is doing this, because it did not quite appreciate how strong Frankie actually
- 42:19is. So Frankie is going to town on this guy. It's really funny
- 42:23actually, because he's just like beating it into every different direction. And even
- 42:29though we see the body like moving out of the way, I think it's
- 42:34supposed to be that Frankie is moving so quickly that even as it slides from
- 42:39the hit in one direction, that he basically like catches it with the hit
- 42:44coming from the opposite direction because he's just moving so quickly. And this creature
- 42:51is just like I said, stop it already, and he uses sticky Spidernet
- 42:57grabs the nunchucks out of Frankie's hands and is then like, all right,
- 43:02so this is what's going to happen now. And this is when he's about
- 43:10to summon his guys. Frankie opens the gun in his arm and shoots at
- 43:15the guy. Still doesn't kill him, by the way, you know,
- 43:20he's suffering. He's very unhappy, but he's not It's not solved. And
- 43:29this is when we turn around and see that Robin has been gripped up by
- 43:35these mouse spider mice. She apologizes for being careless because it didn't occur to
- 43:44her that there would be other spiders around, and she is like tangled up
- 43:50in such a way that like when she wiggles to try and get out of
- 43:53it, the camera zooms in like her tits and the edge of her skirt,
- 43:59and I was just like, I don't know, I feel like this
- 44:00scene probably spawned a law of fan fick. So Frankie is running towards her,
- 44:08like swearing that he's going to help, and then he gets hit with
- 44:13the spider stuff and is glued to the ground. But we find out later
- 44:17that this burns really easily, so he's able to get out of it without
- 44:22very much trouble due to him being a cyborg and that he has immediate access
- 44:28to fire, which most of us would not, so it works out quite
- 44:30well for him. But yeah, this spider monkey tells them all that there's
- 44:37like I think, he says, another five hundred of these spiders on thriller
- 44:44Bark, so I have to imagine we are going to be seeing them again
- 44:50pretty soon. This is when Brooke shows up. Brooke with his fucking face,
- 45:00with his weird skull face. He says three verse, humming arrow,
- 45:07notch slash, and he just closes his sword into its sheath, and we
- 45:16see the spider monkey basically scream and a bunch of blood gout up from its
- 45:23head, and that is the end of the episode. So now let's go
- 45:30to Lufy's emergency situation. I. The whole deal with taking his um what
- 45:44do you call it? Taking his shadow is sort of intercut with parts of
- 45:50the explanation of what's going on with everybody else, But here we have the
- 45:55conversation between Brooke, Robin, and Frankie, and Brooke is like, I
- 46:02don't know how to tell you this, but if your friends have already been
- 46:06captured, then probably it's too late. And I love Frankie yells at Brooke,
- 46:12and Brooke gets very upset at being yelled at, and then he says
- 46:17something about how he doesn't want to face such hostility, and he turns around
- 46:22and says, because I don't have a face, and then just yells skull
- 46:25joke, which truly every time he does one of these it still gets me.
- 46:32It still gets me. I really do like it. It's like it's
- 46:38by the mere fact of him irritating Robin I enjoy it because Robin is so
- 46:44unflappable a lot of the time. She just doesn't get annoyed that quickly,
- 46:51so when you see her be like, all right, can we fucking move
- 46:52this along. It's just a rare thing, and I think it's kind of
- 46:55funny. But yeah, he says, I thought that I had finally charted
- 47:04my escape from this demonic see, but my rudder broke and I was cast
- 47:08even further into the depths of this world. I suppose it was about five
- 47:13years ago, in much the same way it happened to you. The island
- 47:15of Thriller. Bark called out to me. I was desperate to escape,
- 47:22no matter the risks, so I decided to take a chance and scour the
- 47:25island and hunt for parts to fix the rudder. And we get to see
- 47:30like a real fun Cepia tone footage of him running away from zombies from Cerberus,
- 47:39like you know, the whole deal, and he's like, yeah,
- 47:44I miscalculated. This whole place was just full of zombies. They captured me,
- 47:50and this is the place where I saw something truly bonkers. There were
- 47:57other people who had been captured, and they brought this one dude before a
- 48:04corpse that was like all these different parts stitch together. And this guy was
- 48:10a dancer, and the way they have this scene is that he's got his
- 48:15hands above his head and his palms together and like wiggling his head from side
- 48:22to side in this like real weird sort of expression of dance that he just
- 48:30continues in the face of this horrible experimentation that is being done on him.
- 48:36He just keeps going. And I've got to admire that, I really do.
- 48:42So, yeah, he explains about how the you know, the way
- 48:51that the shadow is ripped away, and it's kind of cool. Later on,
- 48:57when we're watching Lufy's Shadow get to Taken, the sound effect of the
- 49:02shadow being peeled up off the floor sounds like when you're unrolling packing tape,
- 49:08like that kind of feeling of sticky peeling. It's very evocative, and it
- 49:17felt like it worked really well for what it was they were depicting. And
- 49:22I wondered how, because you know, I'm not super familiar with the way
- 49:27things work in a lot of comics or manga, but I have to assume
- 49:34that there is like a sound effect included in writing when they do it,
- 49:37and I wonder if it's the same thing. But yeah, Brookes says,
- 49:46it doesn't matter who the corpse belong to. The shadows retain the characteristics of
- 49:52the person they were pulled from. So whatever your corps is, it has
- 49:57to at least be like up to doing what the spirit was able to do.
- 50:01So this is I just think that this is a neat like concept.
- 50:07And of course this guy is like able to dominate all of these creatures and
- 50:15order them around and they're completely under his control, which is a pretty big
- 50:21deal for somebody who wants to become King of the pirates. Just having like
- 50:24hordes and hordes of creatures that just do your bidding, that is going to
- 50:30be an advantage. There's just no way around it. So this we have
- 50:39still our friends that are trapped inside of the bear. It's a kind of
- 50:45a drawn out sequence, but they're brought into the same room where they see
- 50:50Lufy and they see Maria and somebody asks, I think it's up. Doctor
- 50:58Hogback is like, where are the three that I put in the coffin and
- 51:01sent out? And they realize like, oh, they're missing. That's really
- 51:05weird. But the bear does not tell them that they are inside of his
- 51:09body. He just keeps his mouth shut and sweats in the corner. I
- 51:15want to mention, honorable mention to Chingery. Is that how you say her
- 51:20name? But this is the girl who hates Plates, and she just keeps
- 51:25on fucking up the vibe for Doctor Hogback in a way that's delightful and also
- 51:31absalom. She just keeps on being like, nobody would ever love you,
- 51:36nobody wants you. I mean, why would they. You look at you
- 51:40now, you're both unlovable fundamentally, and you're just gonna be alone forever,
- 51:45so you may as we'll just get used to that because you suck. And
- 51:49she's so deadpan about it, and she keeps blocking doctor Hogback as he tries
- 51:54to sort of grandstand, and he's so mad about it. And I love
- 52:00of the pettiness of that particular way of fighting back. I was cray like
- 52:07the way that is played. It's just such a small thing and you could
- 52:13almost be like, oh, it's not even on purpose, you know,
- 52:16but of course it is. I am. I love that this character who
- 52:28makes no sense, like as just somebody who hates Plates. It's really it
- 52:34doesn't make any sense. And she's turning into one of my favorite little side
- 52:38characters. You guys, I'm just realizing, like I have barely gotten into
- 52:47I haven't really at all touched on the start of the third of these episodes,
- 52:53and I didn't realize I am basically out of time. Oh, you
- 53:00guys, I'm so sorry. I've been all over the place. I had
- 53:02to push this back, and now I'm like fucking up my time. I
- 53:07didn't. Usually, you know, I'm able to go pretty quickly when there's
- 53:13a lot of action. But I fucked it up this time. I really
- 53:16did. I'm going to have to kind of cover what happens next in the
- 53:22next episode. I'm so sorry, but I'm going to do my best to
- 53:28make sure that I don't leave anything out. Maybe I'll actually like take notes
- 53:31in that way, I can make sure to hit the points I want to
- 53:34hit. Oh, there's a bunch of stuff in the chat. Oda tends
- 53:38to be very on point with sound effects. As Sarah fhim Demian says,
- 53:43you have no idea. Japanese has a million gazillion on amantapillas, and Oda
- 53:45really loves them more than any other manga. The manga is filled to the
- 53:50brim with them. For every sound imaginable. He especially loves to include drum
- 53:53sounds to highlight dramatic moments. That's fun, Sarah fhimas pronounced sinjury. Okay,
- 54:00A very large amount of the Japanese names for devil fruits arenamonopias related to
- 54:05what they do. Yeah, I guess that's true. Huh. All right,
- 54:10everybody, Well, I'm going to do better next episode. Please bear
- 54:16with me. I'm having so much fun, is the thing, Like,
- 54:19I like these episodes so much that I wind up having a lot more to
- 54:22say about them than you would expect. So I am going to really attempt
- 54:28to get to the point a little bit more and not wander around so much
- 54:31in the next episode. Forgive me, I am going to clean it up,
- 54:37I promise. Thank you all so much for coming and for hanging out
- 54:39with me and giving me info. I appreciate you all so so much.
- 54:44I appreciate your patience as well. And until next time to lou Motherfucker's That
- 55:21was an Unspoiled Network podcast.
