- 0:00Speaker 1: Time to go up, back up to Foxborough, Adam kaplan
- 0:02Speaker 1: for today's football and four joint practice.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Day number one, Adam, how's it going up there?
- 0:10Speaker 1: I actually the button that's totally my fault out an
- 0:13Speaker 1: as a faux pop on me.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Let's try to get how's it going?
- 0:15Speaker 3: Sure technology? Yeah no, but it's beautiful. To answer your question,
- 0:20Speaker 3: it's we got lucky with the weather. Can be a
- 0:22Speaker 3: little bit overcast tomorre but not s just the rain.
- 0:24Speaker 3: But it was beautiful. High seventieslow eighties. They let the
- 0:28Speaker 3: fans in here at Foxborough. They've got plenty of room.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Fact I hadn't been here in three years. They added
- 0:34Speaker 3: a new building for the media and for multimedia, so
- 0:36Speaker 3: it's really cool, sponsored by New Balance. It was. It's
- 0:40Speaker 3: cool to see that. But no, it was a very
- 0:42Speaker 3: likely practice. And I'm not one of these people unless
- 0:44Speaker 3: it's painfully obvious, and I'll explain why I don't do this.
- 0:48Speaker 3: So you know, when like fans, lets say, well who
- 0:50Speaker 3: want practice? Early in my courag, Josh, I didn't know
- 0:54Speaker 3: any better, and I was almost wrong every time I said,
- 0:56Speaker 3: oh well the Eagles won this part. You know, in
- 0:57Speaker 3: these run practice were whatever team I was with. Remember
- 1:00Speaker 3: my first one was with the Raiders and nine ers
- 1:02Speaker 3: and five completely got it wrong and the opposite was true.
- 1:04Speaker 3: So I rarely will say a team dominated practice. The
- 1:08Speaker 3: only time I saw it happen, I believe it was
- 1:11Speaker 3: four years ago in Bryo, Ohio. The Browns were hosting
- 1:14Speaker 3: the Eagles, and the Eagles kick the kicked the ass
- 1:17Speaker 3: of the Browns. In fact, one former NFL head coach
- 1:20Speaker 3: was doing a training camp tour. When we were done,
- 1:23Speaker 3: we compared notes and the guy said, this is dominant.
- 1:25Speaker 3: They look like a Super Bowl team, the Eagles, and
- 1:27Speaker 3: of course you know they made it that year against
- 1:28Speaker 3: the Chiefs. But so again to summarize, you see stuff
- 1:31Speaker 3: out there. It's Andrew Jacheko and I just dropped the show,
- 1:35Speaker 3: which you can get on any podcasting platform. It'll be
- 1:38Speaker 3: actually just being uploaded now so you could hear it
- 1:40Speaker 3: later today the next hour. So you know, we gave you,
- 1:44Speaker 3: we gave you. We give folks forty five to fifty
- 1:46Speaker 3: minutes about what we saw, what we heard, and what
- 1:48Speaker 3: we know, and there was a lot of mixed stuff.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Josh I would say with this practice with the Eagles
- 1:53Speaker 3: kind of up and up and down, and when.
- 1:56Speaker 1: You talk about the up and down, I think the
- 1:58Speaker 1: big highlight for a lot of people, well they're very
- 2:00Speaker 1: curious about was how does the new Eagles offense look
- 2:05Speaker 1: in this action so kind of give us a review
- 2:08Speaker 1: of what did Jillen Hurts in the Eagles offense look
- 2:11Speaker 1: like today.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I thought the run game we'll get started with that
- 2:15Speaker 3: was really good. Outside zone stuff, very explosive with Barkley
- 2:20Speaker 3: and Will Shipley, and they tank pigs because he's coming
- 2:24Speaker 3: back from a towingjury. Didn't didn't work a lot, but
- 2:26Speaker 3: the quarterback timing was off overall, just all three of them.
- 2:31Speaker 3: A doll did some good things. Hurts had a beautiful
- 2:33Speaker 3: out route and he's become really good at this sideline
- 2:36Speaker 3: for the fifteen to twenty yards downfield. It's a timing throw.
- 2:40Speaker 3: He's really good with that. But he had some passes
- 2:43Speaker 3: were behind the pass targets, some pass got batted down.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Tanner McKee does not look like the same guy Josh
- 2:50Speaker 3: in years two and three, where in terms of training
- 2:53Speaker 3: camp he was just terrific and through great timing and
- 2:56Speaker 3: rhythm and has that great arm, but he's just he's
- 3:00Speaker 3: not seeing it well. He's not throwing them with a
- 3:02Speaker 3: good enough timing. It's concerning Andy Dalton, by the way,
- 3:05Speaker 3: It's definitely no, he didn't win it yet, but he's
- 3:08Speaker 3: clearly got the advantage on Key for the number two job.
- 3:11Speaker 3: If you would have told me this before training camp started,
- 3:13Speaker 3: really ota started when it was even I wouldn't believed it.
- 3:16Speaker 3: But I can only go by what I know and
- 3:18Speaker 3: when I'm told and what I say. So mckith got
- 3:20Speaker 3: time tomorrow's practice, in two weeks of practice in the
- 3:23Speaker 3: two preseason games. But he better get started right now.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Adam, for you, you know, talking about the McKey thing.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Let's emphasize again this is a little concerning because you know,
- 3:34Speaker 1: they kept him for a lot of reasons. They never
- 3:37Speaker 1: moved on from him, and they brought in Andy Dalton.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And you know, I'm not hoping anything bit happened that
- 3:42Speaker 1: Jude hurts, but God forbid, something does, and they got
- 3:45Speaker 1: to go to the backup quarterback. The Eagles better be
- 3:47Speaker 1: sure that whoever is coming in is capable of hailing
- 3:50Speaker 1: the job.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, look, any dults thirty eight years old, it's a
- 3:53Speaker 3: little bit older than I thought. He's a journeyman quarterback.
- 3:57Speaker 3: He's played in the West Coast system before. That's why
- 3:59Speaker 3: he's here than what we reported at the time that
- 4:02Speaker 3: three years ago, here they're going to be the Panthers
- 4:04Speaker 3: or the Eagles for Andy Dalton, and the last second
- 4:07Speaker 3: he was leaning forwards the Eagles. He changed his mind
- 4:10Speaker 3: for family considerations living down south. But the Panthers, as
- 4:14Speaker 3: we reported, did not want him. They found they were
- 4:16Speaker 3: trying to find someone to take his contract, and they
- 4:19Speaker 3: split it. Eagles will pay one and a half million
- 4:21Speaker 3: of Dolton's contract, the Panthers will pay the other guaranteed money,
- 4:24Speaker 3: which is two and a half million, and here we go.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Dalton's done. It's been a little bit more consistent than
- 4:29Speaker 3: Kanner McKee. Now on your point about what you know,
- 4:31Speaker 3: are the Eagles in good hands if Hurt's got hurt
- 4:33Speaker 3: and couldn't play a week or two, it's a good question.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I'm not totally sold in Dalton at this point. You
- 4:41Speaker 3: rely on the starting experience, obviously, but this should not
- 4:44Speaker 3: even be discussion, but it is because the key has
- 4:46Speaker 3: just not done it. I'm as surprised as most people.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I mean, if you've listened to us on inside the
- 4:51Speaker 3: Birds and we've been seeing the praises of McKee for
- 4:55Speaker 3: almost three years. Came out of nowhere in that Baltimore
- 4:58Speaker 3: preseason game where he wasn't doing well on training campus
- 5:00Speaker 3: first year and ever since for two and a half
- 5:03Speaker 3: years he was great until that. Josh, I think it
- 5:05Speaker 3: really started for him that Washington game we eighteen last year.
- 5:08Speaker 3: You can play well, They've been on the Dowars slide
- 5:10Speaker 3: since then, to be honest with you.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan joining us live from Foxborough. Massive Chusetts Joint
- 5:16Speaker 1: Practices today, Day one between the Eagles and the Patriots.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Adam, you know a lot of people bey of Jillen Hurts.
- 5:25Speaker 1: They have, you know, kind of hyperanalyzed what he has
- 5:28Speaker 1: done in practice, what he has done at the Joint
- 5:30Speaker 1: Practices today training camp.
- 5:32Speaker 2: So you know, give the audience.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Your perspective of who and what John Hurts is in
- 5:37Speaker 1: this offense as of August nineteenth.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really the I thought. The time you see
- 5:43Speaker 3: Spurts of the good timing which we saw last season,
- 5:46Speaker 3: and then there's other times he hold onto the ball
- 5:48Speaker 3: too long. You got to understand, man. I'll give an example.
- 5:52Speaker 3: We talked about Ty Robinson in the show that Andrew
- 5:54Speaker 3: and I just did, and I had a nugget on
- 5:57Speaker 3: how he had to be deprogrammed of what he learned
- 5:59Speaker 3: at Nebraska, had to learn what Fangio and Clinn Hurt wanted. Well,
- 6:04Speaker 3: Hurts basically has got to deprogram the Sirianni system, which
- 6:09Speaker 3: is the only system he's known since twenty one. Yes,
- 6:13Speaker 3: he was with the West Coast system in twenty twenty,
- 6:16Speaker 3: but you know he was. He wasn't starting then. I
- 6:19Speaker 3: mean that was once his last season as the start
- 6:22Speaker 3: of the Hurts did play late in that season, but
- 6:24Speaker 3: this is a different system than the one that Peterson ran.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Terminology is the same, but he had he really had
- 6:31Speaker 3: to relearn this and it's tough. It's as we said
- 6:35Speaker 3: months ago, it's going to take months, not weeks. They're
- 6:37Speaker 3: still in that and you know, Dalton had a Dalton
- 6:40Speaker 3: knows the system where it Hurts. It's got to learn it.
- 6:42Speaker 3: So to summon up on your question, people need to
- 6:45Speaker 3: be patient. As I you'll hear me say on the
- 6:47Speaker 3: show that we did Andrew and I did today, I'm
- 6:51Speaker 3: not back up off what I said. He's going to
- 6:52Speaker 3: get it. He's a veteran quarterback. He's won a lot
- 6:55Speaker 3: of games. He kin't throw us comming because he's done
- 6:57Speaker 3: it before. He just never done it consistently. He's gonna
- 7:00Speaker 3: have to do it consistently. If folks have to be
- 7:03Speaker 3: they got to be patient. I know, I know in
- 7:05Speaker 3: this talent we went instant results, you know, but you're
- 7:08Speaker 3: gonna have to be patient, folks. It's not gonna happen overnight.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It's not just this town. We live in a microwave society.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Everyone wants their mac and cheese in a minute or less.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Okay, every sport, every sport we uh we turned you know,
- 7:20Speaker 3: we want the next best thing you hurchase the quarterback
- 7:23Speaker 3: that that's it. I mean, he's just got to get it.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Adam, you mentioned robinson 's flip over to the defense.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Fangio spoke to the media today.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 2: By the way, I like to call Fangio truth Serum.
- 7:35Speaker 2: He is like the ultimate.
- 7:36Speaker 1: He's amazing and I love one of the comments he made,
- 7:40Speaker 1: and you know, he actually talked about Jahad Campbell. He
- 7:43Speaker 1: talked about how last year na Kobe Dean taking reps
- 7:47Speaker 1: away from Campbell put him behind the eight ball a
- 7:49Speaker 1: little bit. I thought that was a very interesting revelation.
- 7:52Speaker 1: There By Fangio.
- 7:53Speaker 3: All right, a couple of things here. All right, let's
- 7:56Speaker 3: be honest, folks. He's not telling the compleates truth. What
- 8:00Speaker 3: I'm saying is, why do you think John Campbell played
- 8:03Speaker 3: in the preseason game? If he was having a great
- 8:06Speaker 3: train game? Do we really think he'd be in there
- 8:08Speaker 3: with the backup snow? I mean that he wouldn't be
- 8:11Speaker 3: if he's doing better. I get it. He Vic's not
- 8:14Speaker 3: going to say that. But how about the comment that
- 8:16Speaker 3: he said about ty Robinson? Well, he said he was
- 8:19Speaker 3: on life support before the game, but he's got life
- 8:23Speaker 3: in which he means he played well. He's saying, by
- 8:26Speaker 3: the way, I was there, so I was like, bait.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Did he just say? And we all the reporter next
- 8:32Speaker 3: to me not. He goes, I can't beullieve he said that.
- 8:34Speaker 3: But he told the truth. He's letting you know. Ty
- 8:36Speaker 3: Robinson was not very good. You know, Jeff and I
- 8:39Speaker 3: when we previewed training camp and people thought we were
- 8:43Speaker 3: crazy about ty Robinson, that he was in a lock
- 8:45Speaker 3: to make the team. We said, he needs to start performing.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Didn't have a good year last year. Training camp has
- 8:52Speaker 3: not been great for him, and then he just was
- 8:54Speaker 3: a stud in the preseason game. Sometimes that's all you need.
- 8:57Speaker 3: So we'll see, we'll see. Look, it's only one preseason game.
- 9:00Speaker 3: We're not gonna go overboard, but it was really good.
- 9:02Speaker 3: And we're going to see the rest of training camp
- 9:04Speaker 3: and practices and tomorrow and then in these last two
- 9:07Speaker 3: preseason games what he looks like to see if he's
- 9:09Speaker 3: going to make the team.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Adam.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I also want to get your take on the comments
- 9:14Speaker 1: about Michael Carter that Fanagier he talked about Carter and
- 9:17Speaker 1: getting more reps of safety. How he basically, in the
- 9:20Speaker 1: paraphrase Fangio, he said that Apps they know who he is.
- 9:23Speaker 2: He's played safety his whole life in the NFL.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Whereas Carter, they said that he needs to get those
- 9:28Speaker 1: reps so they have a better idea what he ken
- 9:30Speaker 1: and can't do.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and look, he's been playing backup Nicol, He's been
- 9:34Speaker 3: backing up Epsit at safety. The good thing about Carter
- 9:39Speaker 3: is he's got better range, He's he can play post safety.
- 9:43Speaker 3: APS is better in the box. APS is still clear
- 9:47Speaker 3: of this starter. We're not ready conceded right now. APPS
- 9:52Speaker 3: is a heavy favorite, like that has not changed. But again,
- 9:55Speaker 3: this is what joined practice are for tomorrow. We'll see
- 9:59Speaker 3: in the pre and games what what happens, and then
- 10:03Speaker 3: they'll have to make a decision. But is clearly the starter.
- 10:05Speaker 3: But the great thing about Carter is he's a safety.
- 10:09Speaker 3: In college at Duke, he was a He did so
- 10:13Speaker 3: well as in Nickel, he got paid as one of
- 10:15Speaker 3: the highest paid Nichols in the NFL. And then, as
- 10:19Speaker 3: we reported at the time, people thought we were crazy
- 10:21Speaker 3: because he hadn't really done it. He had not played
- 10:22Speaker 3: safety at this level. Eagle's plan on at the time
- 10:25Speaker 3: of the trade last year with the Jets, he was
- 10:27Speaker 3: going to They're going to give him reps, safety and practice,
- 10:30Speaker 3: and they did. He was actually their don safety. So
- 10:33Speaker 3: you're right to bring it up. It's just it's it's
- 10:35Speaker 3: he's got to make up for lost time. It's really
- 10:37Speaker 3: going to be hard for him to take the job
- 10:38Speaker 3: of maps.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Come more for Adam Kaplan Live from Foxborough for Today's
- 10:42Speaker 1: Football and four powdered by the Inside the Birds podcast.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Like subscribing download wherever you get your podcasts. Adam speak
- 10:49Speaker 1: of the defense. A lot of people want to know
- 10:52Speaker 1: AJ Brown versus the Eagles defense.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Talk about that, all right, So a J Brown and
- 10:58Speaker 3: I don't know if they solve something Reek Walling would
- 11:03Speaker 3: have problems with. But first twenty minutes of seven on
- 11:07Speaker 3: seven or eleven on eleven, they had so many just
- 11:11Speaker 3: I mean, they got they burned the Eagles that they
- 11:13Speaker 3: got Mitchell one, but they can't they went after they
- 11:16Speaker 3: went after a Reek Walling a little bit. So now
- 11:18Speaker 3: I don't know if that was planned. There's no way
- 11:20Speaker 3: I would know that. I'm just telling you they had
- 11:21Speaker 3: a lot of success. We'll make We'll have made a
- 11:23Speaker 3: couple of nice breakups, but they got them a bit. Look,
- 11:27Speaker 3: it's hard for six foot four corners to stop and start.
- 11:30Speaker 3: It just is. And the type of the type of
- 11:33Speaker 3: routes that they were running, it costs that he have
- 11:37Speaker 3: to would have to decelerate and it's hard for him
- 11:39Speaker 3: to do that. It's it's hard for talk corners to
- 11:41Speaker 3: do that. So yeah, they look. I told folks, be
- 11:45Speaker 3: careful of what ots are the flag football. They don't
- 11:47Speaker 3: mean anything. This is your indication of how the player
- 11:50Speaker 3: performing training camp. And that's why I said it. I
- 11:52Speaker 3: told people last year with KIEI Wringle, you got to
- 11:54Speaker 3: stop with it. It means absolutely nothing. He see's not
- 11:57Speaker 3: a starting corner. He never has been. Fold snake eyes
- 12:00Speaker 3: on that one thinking he'd be a starting corner. I
- 12:03Speaker 3: remember he got beat out by a guy hat being
- 12:04Speaker 3: out of the league for a year. So be careful
- 12:06Speaker 3: of OTAs. Just be careful. It's not contact, it's T
- 12:11Speaker 3: shirts and shorts. There's no physical play. This is when
- 12:14Speaker 3: it matters. And now we'll and bother the way I mean,
- 12:17Speaker 3: because Eagles were down four corners today, Ringo got a
- 12:20Speaker 3: lot of work up with the twos. But you won't
- 12:22Speaker 3: see him playing if everybody's help. He won't be playing
- 12:24Speaker 3: corner in the fall. He'll be a special teams player.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Ring Ringo is relegated special teams unless the break last
- 12:30Speaker 1: case of emergency, Adam really quick before I let you go,
- 12:34Speaker 1: I wanted to get your perspective on the other thing
- 12:36Speaker 1: that FANSIU said today they don't know when Grenard is
- 12:38Speaker 1: coming back.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yeah, from his injury.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I think that's a big deal because they'd invest in
- 12:42Speaker 1: not just trade assets, but a lot of money.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Yeah. And you know how he did say he goes
- 12:48Speaker 3: to general manager Howie Rosmen said he kind of downplayed.
- 12:51Speaker 3: He said, absolutely, be ready for a training care for
- 12:53Speaker 3: a week one. He said, when how he's asked and
- 12:55Speaker 3: he goes, oh, yeah, he'll be ready. Well, Vic, Vix, look,
- 12:59Speaker 3: remember it's petrol strain. Petrol strains are tricky, so talking
- 13:03Speaker 3: to teams about these injuries, it could only give you
- 13:06Speaker 3: a range of when a player could come back. Everybody
- 13:10Speaker 3: pectoral strains are difficult. And Vic talked about it today.
- 13:13Speaker 3: He heard it in their weight room and it's yeah, Vic.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Rubert Frank was right next to me when he said
- 13:20Speaker 3: it of NBC Sports filling. I said, real, great question.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I don't know why you guys didn't ask this earlier.
- 13:26Speaker 3: And Vic, because Vick always tells the truth, he said, yeah,
- 13:28Speaker 3: he might not be ready week one. He didn't really
- 13:31Speaker 3: give it and he didn't really give an occasion when
- 13:33Speaker 3: he would be ready. So yeah, you're right. So by
- 13:35Speaker 3: having Arnold at Piketty as a third edge, now who
- 13:39Speaker 3: moves up? I mean that's really what he's going to
- 13:41Speaker 3: be the first guy off the bench now. If Grenard's
- 13:46Speaker 3: not ready, And as Jeff and I said on our
- 13:47Speaker 3: show a week or so ago, even if he is
- 13:50Speaker 3: ready week one, he had not been. Josh, he's not
- 13:53Speaker 3: practiced since last December. How the world could anybody have
- 13:57Speaker 3: any idea what he could do earlier on in the season,
- 13:59Speaker 3: even if he's exactly the problem. You're right, You're right.
- 14:02Speaker 2: The same thing to keep an eye on. He's Adam Kaplan.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Check out the latest pie with him and Andrew Checko
- 14:08Speaker 1: live from Foxborough for joint practice day one between the
- 14:11Speaker 1: Eagles of Patriots, and we will hear it from Andrew
- 14:13Speaker 1: Checko after day two of joint practice tomorrow here in
- 14:16Speaker 1: Football at four on ninety seven three ESPN.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Adam, appreciate you jumping on today.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Sounds good things
