- 0:04Speaker 1: but hailing from the city of Sands.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Put your hands together for Jamison Welch.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And in this corner, standing at five foot ten, weighing
- 0:11Speaker 1: in at town and coming to us from his super
- 0:15Speaker 1: secret bunker with no AC in Tucson, Arizona.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Put your hands together for Luis Montemao.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Welcome back to an audition of the Mixed Company Podcast.
- 0:25Speaker 4: Of course, my name is Jamison and I'm joined by Luis.
- 0:28Speaker 4: As always, however, today got special guests. Luise, who do we.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Have today, Jamison? I am so excited. We have not
- 0:36Speaker 5: just a sportscaster, but a legend, a man who has
- 0:38Speaker 5: been the voice of professional boxing for decades, an inductee
- 0:41Speaker 5: into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Y'all, it is
- 0:44Speaker 5: an honor to welcome to the ring. Al Bernstein, mister Burnstein,
- 0:48Speaker 5: thank you so much for being here.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Good to be with you, guys. I want you just
- 0:52Speaker 2: do that when I forget to close the garage door
- 0:55Speaker 2: and I want to call my wife and tell her
- 0:57Speaker 2: I'm a legend.
- 0:58Speaker 5: Oh, absolutely believe I won't be in as much trouble.
- 1:02Speaker 5: We'll record this, we'll send you a video of me saying.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Here you go, I like that. I guess just play
- 1:06Speaker 2: it for man.
- 1:08Speaker 5: We have a ton of questions for you, mister Bernstein.
- 1:11Speaker 5: We really can't start with anything though, other than the
- 1:13Speaker 5: upcoming fight between Canelo Alvarez and Bud Crawford. You know,
- 1:16Speaker 5: we're super excited. It is not without controversies, and people
- 1:19Speaker 5: think it's kind of silly that these two guys are
- 1:21Speaker 5: fighting each other when there are plenty of opponents in
- 1:23Speaker 5: their respective weight classes. Giving your experience, how do you
- 1:27Speaker 5: see this fight? Historic matchup for the ages, or maybe
- 1:29Speaker 5: something we'll forget about it in a year or two. Like,
- 1:32Speaker 5: let's put this in the context for us.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Well, it's not a match that happened organically, right, you
- 1:38Speaker 2: know they nobody was thinking of this match because, as
- 1:40Speaker 2: you mentioned, there are two weight divisions separated at least
- 1:43Speaker 2: two when in his normal way, Crawford is one forty seven.
- 1:49Speaker 2: He recently moved up to one fifty four, so Canella
- 1:52Speaker 2: offer us is up at one sixty eight. So it
- 1:55Speaker 2: wasn't a match people were thinking about once they made it.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Because because these are two huge names in the sport,
- 2:02Speaker 2: it kind of took on a life of its own.
- 2:05Speaker 2: How much of a life, as you alluded to, will
- 2:09Speaker 2: depend greatly on what happens moving forward the rest of
- 2:13Speaker 2: this week. Will the buzz for it continue? It is
- 2:18Speaker 2: available to a lot of people because it's on Netflix,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and it'll probably have a monstrous TV audience for sure,
- 2:26Speaker 2: And will the fight be interesting? You know, we never
- 2:29Speaker 2: know that about a boxing match. Even when we see
- 2:32Speaker 2: a matchup that we think is fantastic, Sometimes it is,
- 2:35Speaker 2: sometimes it isn't. And sometimes we see matchups that we're
- 2:40Speaker 2: not sure about and they turn out to be great.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So I think it's a significant fight for sure, because
- 2:46Speaker 2: we have these two, two of the top fighters of
- 2:50Speaker 2: this era in the in the ring together and an
- 2:53Speaker 2: unlikely pairing one we didn't expect. Sometimes that's intriguing.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Well, I really appreciate you mentioning the fact that it's
- 3:02Speaker 5: on Netflix and has a lot of eyeballs that are
- 3:04Speaker 5: going to be on the fight. You know, how do
- 3:06Speaker 5: you feel about the fact that no boxing is on
- 3:09Speaker 5: linear TV today? Top Rank is not on ESPN. They're
- 3:12Speaker 5: announcing fights on Instagram and commentaris are asking where can
- 3:15Speaker 5: I watch this? How can I watch this fight? What
- 3:17Speaker 5: does that mean for the state of boxing today.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Well, boxing's issue right now, at least in America more
- 3:26Speaker 2: so even than in other countries, is platforming, because I mean,
- 3:32Speaker 2: there hasn't been boxing on over the air networks traditional
- 3:36Speaker 2: over the air networks for a long time. But ESPN
- 3:39Speaker 2: has had boxing for the most part since its inception,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and of course we now think of that as over
- 3:47Speaker 2: the air programming, don't we, even though it's a cable channel.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And of course I worked for Showtime for many years
- 3:53Speaker 2: in HBO had it, but those were paid channels that
- 3:56Speaker 2: were behind the pay barriers. So boxing doesn't have that
- 4:00Speaker 2: outlet right now. The Netflix and Amazon Prime, which kind
- 4:08Speaker 2: of shows some fights, not too many with PBC to
- 4:12Speaker 2: live free to their subscribers is kind of what stands
- 4:18Speaker 2: in for network TV, except that we don't see it
- 4:23Speaker 2: very often on those two outlets because now the way
- 4:28Speaker 2: streaming is millions and millions and millions of people have
- 4:32Speaker 2: access to Netflix and or Amazon Prime, the major streamers.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So whether Netflix get continues to get involved in boxing
- 4:41Speaker 2: on a regular basis is another question, But there's no
- 4:45Speaker 2: question in America especially boxing has a platform issue, and
- 4:51Speaker 2: part of the issue that it's going to have is
- 4:55Speaker 2: people not, as you point out, people not knowing quite
- 4:57Speaker 2: where to see the different product. Zone streaming pay service
- 5:03Speaker 2: has become a major player. Uh, but again that's a
- 5:08Speaker 2: pay service.
- 5:11Speaker 5: Yeah. Do you think we're gonna have trouble getting new
- 5:13Speaker 5: fans into boxing when everything is streaming and you have
- 5:16Speaker 5: to download different apps? Or maybe it's better for the
- 5:19Speaker 5: new generation because they're more savvy with that kind of thing.
- 5:22Speaker 5: I miss the fact that we're able to catch Saturday
- 5:24Speaker 5: night fights on regular TV no matter where you are.
- 5:26Speaker 5: To be honest with you, what are you.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Well, it's a very good question, and you you you
- 5:32Speaker 2: phrased it in a way that is generational and interesting.
- 5:36Speaker 2: We now they're you know, we now know based on
- 5:41Speaker 2: no matter what age you are, you're used to streaming content,
- 5:46Speaker 2: right most everybody is. It's the way of things. And
- 5:51Speaker 2: so somebody that's my age, you're older. There are people
- 5:54Speaker 2: who are to me shocking, I know, but there are
- 5:56Speaker 2: some you know, they they're hip to it. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 2: they know it. They might not be as savvy as
- 6:03Speaker 2: somebody who's twenty five, but they know what it is
- 6:06Speaker 2: and how we get that programming. So someplace like the
- 6:12Speaker 2: Zone is you know, accessible and understandable. The problem is
- 6:17Speaker 2: it's again it's a pay channel, and I do I've
- 6:21Speaker 2: been doing boxing in the last four or five months.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I've been doing some boxing for where promoters are bringing
- 6:29Speaker 2: in and they're primarily on YouTube or they're on other
- 6:34Speaker 2: streaming services. And it is interesting because that's what now
- 6:42Speaker 2: stands in for regional sports networks or things like that,
- 6:46Speaker 2: right that could run those middle level events. And so
- 6:50Speaker 2: we are we're seeing a revolution in technology and boxing,
- 6:56Speaker 2: not because it chose to be, but because it has
- 6:58Speaker 2: to be. Is on the cutting edge of that for
- 7:03Speaker 2: good or bad.
- 7:05Speaker 5: That's fair. I don't want to monopolize the conversation, Jamison,
- 7:09Speaker 5: please jump on in.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Yes, as a local here in Vegas, this fight weekend
- 7:14Speaker 4: doesn't have the same buzz as other big fight weekend,
- 7:17Speaker 4: especially will fight. We even went Floyd in the past
- 7:19Speaker 4: with you know, Tyson fights other great fighters. Do you
- 7:22Speaker 4: think there's something different about this fight because it doesn't
- 7:25Speaker 4: have I mean, we're talking about it, but doesn't feel
- 7:28Speaker 4: like it's a huge fight weekend.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Well it's hard to tell, right, I Mean here we
- 7:33Speaker 2: are with you know, early in the week and there's
- 7:39Speaker 2: going to be fifty at least fifty thousand people at
- 7:41Speaker 2: the Allegiant Stadium, and everywhere you look there's some kind
- 7:46Speaker 2: of advertisement or whatever relating to the fight. I think
- 7:52Speaker 2: our definition of buzz might have to change because in
- 7:56Speaker 2: this city everything is more diffused than it used to be.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I mean, I'll give you an example. So nineteen eighty seven,
- 8:07Speaker 2: Maren Hagler and Sugar Eye Leonard at Caesar's Palace. Right now,
- 8:13Speaker 2: as it happens, I'm doing a music show before this fight.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I did a music show before that fight, first one
- 8:18Speaker 2: I ever did. I could there Every human on the
- 8:24Speaker 2: planet that I knew of was in that space and
- 8:29Speaker 2: was invested at Caesar's Palace. I could feel the electricity. Right, Well,
- 8:36Speaker 2: we don't exactly. It's different now. It's diffused. Our buzz
- 8:42Speaker 2: is digital, Our buzz is in a different way. So
- 8:48Speaker 2: it's harder for us to contextualize. You're here in Vegas, right, yep, Yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 2: it's hard. It's hard to contextualize what feels like a
- 8:56Speaker 2: big event and what doesn't because everything in our lives
- 9:00Speaker 2: is more compartmentalized, isn't it, and Vegas is more compartmentalized. Yes,
- 9:06Speaker 2: events can be big in the city, but you know,
- 9:10Speaker 2: still it feels like this is in this slot, that's
- 9:14Speaker 2: in that slot, and that's in that slot.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Well, and you know, I definitely want to talk about
- 9:20Speaker 5: your music events as well, because I'm very interested in
- 9:22Speaker 5: hearing about that. But it's something that got me thinking
- 9:24Speaker 5: about how you say that buzz has to change. You know,
- 9:27Speaker 5: Jameson and I we critique the sport a lot because
- 9:29Speaker 5: we love it. I think boxing is the greatest sport
- 9:31Speaker 5: in the world, and I always wanted to remain as such.
- 9:34Speaker 5: I personally feel there's a bit of a too much
- 9:37Speaker 5: weight put on nostalgia with you know, Floyd Mayweather coming back,
- 9:40Speaker 5: Tyson coming back, Pacchio coming back. You know, it doesn't
- 9:43Speaker 5: feel as fresh. It feels like we need the old
- 9:46Speaker 5: guard to come save the sport. Is that something that
- 9:49Speaker 5: has happened over there over your career or is something
- 9:52Speaker 5: recent where it's a sporting decline that needs, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 5: familiar faces you what's your take on that?
- 9:58Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. I've always viewed the the novelty
- 10:04Speaker 2: events as one offs. I don't think they're designed to
- 10:10Speaker 2: save the sport. They're designed for people who make money, period,
- 10:13Speaker 2: That's what they're designed for. Uh, And they won't be
- 10:17Speaker 2: a sport saving because they're not. But the offshoot of
- 10:22Speaker 2: that is people think they are, and people think, oh,
- 10:25Speaker 2: this to the casual fan especially, they think, oh, that's
- 10:28Speaker 2: the sport, right logan, you know, Jake Paul and and
- 10:36Speaker 2: Floyd I forgot who he's fighting already, Floyd Maywell, right,
- 10:40Speaker 2: yeah or no, Husevont Davis, Vont Davis right, Like that's oh,
- 10:46Speaker 2: and that's weird because that does involve a current fighter,
- 10:49Speaker 2: so that one crosses the line into the actual boxing
- 10:54Speaker 2: world because that fight takes Gravonte Davis out of play
- 10:57Speaker 2: for an actual boxer. Most of them, like the Mayweather
- 11:02Speaker 2: you know fight and the rest of it, those are
- 11:07Speaker 2: a one offs in my opinion. But to the casual person,
- 11:10Speaker 2: that looks like it's what boxing is trying to become.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And and people cannot resist putting. And we live in
- 11:18Speaker 2: a society now where if you can market something, you
- 11:23Speaker 2: can do it, and if you market it well enough,
- 11:26Speaker 2: it doesn't matter if it has actual value as a content,
- 11:31Speaker 2: it can still make you money.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Is that a good thing?
- 11:36Speaker 3: Though?
- 11:37Speaker 5: I Mean we've kind of gone back and.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Forth, really, but that's what our society is about. I mean,
- 11:44Speaker 2: you can decide whether you want it. But boxing is
- 11:47Speaker 2: a sport that is susceptible to that because it's a
- 11:51Speaker 2: it's a you know, there's no structure to it. You
- 11:54Speaker 2: can't The Buffalo Bills are not going to go off
- 11:56Speaker 2: and as rogue and play the Ohio State Buckeyes because
- 12:02Speaker 2: they think it's marketable. Right, football the sport that way, right,
- 12:06Speaker 2: But in boxing is you can right? You can You
- 12:10Speaker 2: could decide that, oh, this person, it might be interesting
- 12:14Speaker 2: to see figure out how we can get them in
- 12:16Speaker 2: or ink together, no matter how absurd it may seem.
- 12:19Speaker 2: If it's marketable, you do it. And no, it isn't
- 12:21Speaker 2: necessarily positive.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Now let me ask, obviously this is a big fight
- 12:26Speaker 4: weekend for the non traditional boxing fans, if there's a
- 12:32Speaker 4: couple of younger fighters or a lesser known fighter that
- 12:34Speaker 4: you would recommend to them to.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Follow along as you know the days go on. Who
- 12:40Speaker 3: those be? And why?
- 12:42Speaker 2: Well, there's all kinds of great fighters, you know in
- 12:45Speaker 2: the sport. I mean, the every weight class has I
- 12:51Speaker 2: think has some really really good talent. One hundred and
- 12:54Speaker 2: forty pound division is a perfect example. It has twenty
- 12:58Speaker 2: fighters in the first in the top tier of it
- 13:04Speaker 2: that could all maybe beat each other. I mean, we're
- 13:06Speaker 2: gonna have super al Mattias taking on Dalton Smith, who's
- 13:09Speaker 2: a young British fighter. That's a perfect example of a
- 13:12Speaker 2: match that's going to be, you know, fantastic. Every weight
- 13:17Speaker 2: class has a number of fighters that you know, could
- 13:22Speaker 2: pique people's interests, but they have to see them right
- 13:26Speaker 2: and they have to be exposed to them, you know,
- 13:30Speaker 2: in order to kind of get into enjoying them. I mean,
- 13:34Speaker 2: we know Devin Haney is fighting Brian Norman for instance,
- 13:38Speaker 2: coming up. Brian Norman is a welterweight that maybe not
- 13:41Speaker 2: every casuals fan knows, but he's a welterweight champion and
- 13:46Speaker 2: he this is his breakout time. Now will he beat
- 13:49Speaker 2: Devin Haney, who is, you know, already an established star
- 13:53Speaker 2: in the sport of box And we're gonna find out.
- 13:55Speaker 2: But for some casuals boxing fan, it says, oh, I
- 13:58Speaker 2: want to go tune into something with a high level
- 14:00Speaker 2: skill of boxing and maybe excitement is present. That's a
- 14:04Speaker 2: perfect match for them.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Go ahead lose.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Oh and by the way, many of those matches are
- 14:12Speaker 2: found on the women's side. I mean, let me throw
- 14:15Speaker 2: that in as well, you know, there are a number
- 14:20Speaker 2: of really good fights that people can can find on
- 14:23Speaker 2: the women's side of the ledger because they are women
- 14:26Speaker 2: have no compunction about fighting each other, while men we
- 14:29Speaker 2: see titles languish and not everybody challenging. Everybody. In the
- 14:32Speaker 2: women's sport, they do all the time.
- 14:35Speaker 5: We're a big supporter of women's boxing here. We've talked
- 14:38Speaker 5: about it many times and we follow it as well. Yeah,
- 14:41Speaker 5: it's wonderful. So with the state of the sport in
- 14:44Speaker 5: the way is now, you know, you're knowing it as
- 14:46Speaker 5: well as you do if you were a boxing commissioner,
- 14:49Speaker 5: you were in charge the head of anything either in
- 14:52Speaker 5: terms of the number of fights that can make media.
- 14:54Speaker 5: What kind of changes would you make to improve the
- 14:56Speaker 5: sport personally?
- 14:57Speaker 2: Well, it's very hard because there's not one unbrell in
- 15:00Speaker 2: the sport. But I mean in theory, if you could,
- 15:03Speaker 2: I mean, number one, we'd like to see fewer weight classes.
- 15:07Speaker 2: You'd like to see one champion in every weight class,
- 15:11Speaker 2: but those things are very hard to create. You'd like
- 15:16Speaker 2: to see conformity in ring size and in all rules,
- 15:22Speaker 2: I mean state rules. I mean you can go to
- 15:25Speaker 2: one state in the United States and there's a three
- 15:28Speaker 2: knockdown rule in somewhere else where, it's not, you know, so,
- 15:31Speaker 2: I mean, and that's true around the world as well.
- 15:35Speaker 2: So those are the kind of things you'd like to
- 15:37Speaker 2: have for the sport. But I think that kind of
- 15:43Speaker 2: rogue thing is endemic in the sport and has always been.
- 15:47Speaker 2: It's just it's a very boxing I always joke that
- 15:51Speaker 2: boxing is lazy, a fair capitalism run them up because
- 15:55Speaker 2: there is no there are no overarching constraints on it
- 16:02Speaker 2: for the most part, and that's in some ways that's
- 16:06Speaker 2: interesting and good, I guess, but again, you know, I mean,
- 16:10Speaker 2: I always laugh when people say, you know, there's too
- 16:15Speaker 2: much I don't know, be political, but there's too much,
- 16:18Speaker 2: too much control of government, you know, federal government, et cetera.
- 16:22Speaker 2: More states rights. Yeah, great, except every one of those
- 16:25Speaker 2: states is going to pass different laws that are gonna
- 16:27Speaker 2: you know, so show me, show me no federal government,
- 16:32Speaker 2: show me no overarching rules, and then see what happens.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Boxing is what happens, then, right, that's fair.
- 16:39Speaker 5: I mean, we talked about the positivity or not of
- 16:41Speaker 5: things like people making strange fights for a buck, and
- 16:45Speaker 5: but you said it's something that only boxing does and
- 16:47Speaker 5: it kind of shows that, for better or worse, there's
- 16:49Speaker 5: no other sport like it, and that is something to
- 16:51Speaker 5: do admire in it of itself.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And the other thing is if fighters coming back and everything.
- 16:56Speaker 2: I always joke Steve Carlton would have pitched he was
- 16:59Speaker 2: forty nine years old if somebody would have let them, right.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I mean, it's different to boxing because you can get
- 17:04Speaker 2: hurt more easily. But you know, athletes want to keep
- 17:08Speaker 2: performing and if they're given an opportunity and they pass
- 17:11Speaker 2: the physical, they're going to do it unfortunately, and it's
- 17:13Speaker 2: kind of up to cooler heads to prevail.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Well, let's such tracks because you know, apart from you
- 17:21Speaker 5: being a legend as a sportscaster, you're also you know,
- 17:23Speaker 5: an author, and you're a recording artist. You know you
- 17:25Speaker 5: mentioned you have a music event this Thursday the eleventh.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Please tell us what is this about, and tell us
- 17:31Speaker 5: a little bit about the history of these events and
- 17:33Speaker 5: your history with music.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Well, I you know, the first I alluded to it
- 17:38Speaker 2: before the first music show I ever did was in Vegas. Anyway,
- 17:43Speaker 2: I was involved music before then, but it was in
- 17:45Speaker 2: nineteen eighty seven when Marvin Hackler fought Sugar Ray Leonard.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I was out to dinner with the president of Caesars
- 17:54Speaker 2: Palas and a couple of people. Just before that, Barry
- 17:58Speaker 2: McGuigan had fought at Caesars and his dad was a
- 18:03Speaker 2: famous pub singer in Ireland, and he did several nights
- 18:08Speaker 2: in the Olympic Lounge at Caesar's Palace leading up to
- 18:12Speaker 2: the mcwigan fight, and it was a big success and
- 18:15Speaker 2: everybody loved it. And the president of caesar said, don't
- 18:18Speaker 2: you sing, because I used to sit in with people
- 18:20Speaker 2: in Vegas. I wasn't living here yet, and I said, yeah,
- 18:24Speaker 2: I do music. He said, oh, great, You're gonna do
- 18:27Speaker 2: three nights leading up to the Hagler Leonard fight. That
- 18:32Speaker 2: was like four months from then, And I said, okay.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I didn't have a band, I didn't have an act,
- 18:39Speaker 2: I had nothing. So I spent four months wood shedding
- 18:43Speaker 2: with people that I knew in the entertainment industry, got together,
- 18:46Speaker 2: did three nights leading up to the Hagler Leonard fight.
- 18:50Speaker 2: It went very well and that led me to do
- 18:53Speaker 2: shows before big fights in Vegas. Did a number of
- 18:56Speaker 2: engagements at Caesar's and then through the years, every time
- 19:00Speaker 2: a big most times when a big fight comes here,
- 19:02Speaker 2: I'll do some form of stage show. Either it'll be
- 19:06Speaker 2: my true music show or it'll be a boxing party
- 19:09Speaker 2: show or sports party show where we have video and
- 19:12Speaker 2: trivia and whatever. Well, in the last six or seven years,
- 19:16Speaker 2: I've been doing the music show at the Tuscany Sweets
- 19:20Speaker 2: and Casino here in Las Vegas, and we do it
- 19:24Speaker 2: before major fights. And I'm gonna be doing a show
- 19:27Speaker 2: this Thursday, September eleventh at the Tuscany and the Piazza Lounge.
- 19:32Speaker 2: She's a really nice music venue. They have great music
- 19:36Speaker 2: there all the time and it's a very fun, comfortable
- 19:38Speaker 2: music venue that I love playing and I like it
- 19:43Speaker 2: so much. I went from the Mandelay Bay venue that
- 19:47Speaker 2: I used to do to the Tuscany and it's just
- 19:49Speaker 2: so much fun. So I'm gonna be doing a show
- 19:52Speaker 2: at eight o'clock and nine thirty. There's no cover charts,
- 19:55Speaker 2: so people can just come and enjoy. We're gonna have
- 19:58Speaker 2: music and of all different I'm gonna have a guest singer,
- 20:01Speaker 2: Joe Denanzio, is a fine singer here in Las Vegas,
- 20:05Speaker 2: to join me in providing music. And we're gonna do
- 20:09Speaker 2: boxing trivia, which folks can win prizes, and we're gonna
- 20:14Speaker 2: be kind of honoring a fighter at this I kind
- 20:18Speaker 2: of added a new element to it as my special
- 20:22Speaker 2: boxing guest is Leila McCarter, who is an iconic woman's
- 20:26Speaker 2: boxing champion that I'm sure you guys know about, who
- 20:30Speaker 2: is a five weight division titleist who astonishingly, at the
- 20:36Speaker 2: age forty six, he is still boxing, has not lost
- 20:39Speaker 2: a fight since two thousand and seven, if you can
- 20:42Speaker 2: imagine that, and was rated by Ring Magazine and as
- 20:48Speaker 2: the tenth best women boxer of all time. We're gonna
- 20:51Speaker 2: have Leila there as a special guest. Fans can meet
- 20:53Speaker 2: her and take photos with her, and she's gonna come
- 20:56Speaker 2: up and talk in front of the crowd, and so
- 21:00Speaker 2: we're gonna kind of I'm gonna spend that moment at
- 21:03Speaker 2: the show kind of honoring her for what she does,
- 21:05Speaker 2: and it'll be it should be a fun evening.
- 21:09Speaker 5: That sounds like a lot of fun. That's that's thank
- 21:10Speaker 5: you for informing the public of that. I've got one
- 21:14Speaker 5: last thing, Jameson, do you want to jump in with
- 21:15Speaker 5: anything before.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Yes, So you've covered all the mega fights over the years.
- 21:21Speaker 4: What are the top three off you recollection? That in
- 21:24Speaker 4: terms of like height, the fight, the build up everything.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Obviously this is considered one as well, but in the
- 21:29Speaker 4: past we like the top three mega fights going into
- 21:33Speaker 4: that you could think.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Of in terms of overall excitement. Hagler Hearns was one,
- 21:40Speaker 2: and I broadcast that fight and it lived up to
- 21:43Speaker 2: all all the promotion. H Leonard Hagler Leonard was astonishingly big.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Mayweather Pakiau was even though the fight would didn't end
- 21:56Speaker 2: up being thrilling. That was a major event. Canelo Mayweather
- 22:01Speaker 2: was quite the event. Uh, and I can give you
- 22:06Speaker 2: more than three here, so I'm cheating. I guess you're good.
- 22:09Speaker 2: But and I'll tell you another one was Oscar de
- 22:11Speaker 2: la Joya and Felix Trinita. That was quite that event
- 22:14Speaker 2: took Las Vegas by storm, and uh was really quite
- 22:19Speaker 2: the quite the remarkable event. So I think those are
- 22:23Speaker 2: some of the ones that I remember being so big
- 22:26Speaker 2: that they you know, they just kind of enveloped this,
- 22:31Speaker 2: you know, Las Vegas and created a and and in
- 22:36Speaker 2: nationally and internationally created a buzz that was pretty remarkable.
- 22:41Speaker 2: I I was privileged to do. I've actually been very lucky.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I've done the top I guess the top two or
- 22:49Speaker 2: three pay per view. You know, Paquio Mayweather and Pacquiao
- 22:56Speaker 2: or Mayweather Canelo Alvarez. I did the McGregor. This is
- 23:02Speaker 2: another one, believe it or not. The McGregor Mayweather fight
- 23:06Speaker 2: was a monstrous promotion. I mean I remember working on
- 23:10Speaker 2: that and it was it took a life. Now, that
- 23:13Speaker 2: was a novelty event, though Mayweather was still a part
- 23:18Speaker 2: of the sport. That took a life, It took on
- 23:21Speaker 2: a life of its own. It grew exponentially as it
- 23:26Speaker 2: got closer to that match.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Definitely, well last one. We can't thank you enough for
- 23:34Speaker 5: being here. But do you have an official prediction for
- 23:38Speaker 5: Canelo Alvarez versus Bud Crawford. Do you think you can
- 23:41Speaker 5: make that?
- 23:41Speaker 2: You know, I actually don't, And the reason I don't
- 23:44Speaker 2: is because, look, Canelo is the favorite in the fight,
- 23:49Speaker 2: although I don't think a huge favorite these days, as
- 23:52Speaker 2: the fighter's gotten closer to the odds have shifted to
- 23:54Speaker 2: be much closer. It's a lot for but Crawford to
- 24:00Speaker 2: bite off moving that far up and wait, obviously he's
- 24:05Speaker 2: only had one fight at one point fifty four, even though,
- 24:08Speaker 2: which is two way classes down from where Canelo Alvarez is,
- 24:12Speaker 2: and so he's giving that away. But he's facing a
- 24:17Speaker 2: thirty five year old Canelo Alvarez, who, even though he's
- 24:20Speaker 2: younger than Crawford, has more tread on his tires. He's
- 24:24Speaker 2: you know, fought for twenty years. He's had many more
- 24:26Speaker 2: fights and probably been involved in more a few more battles.
- 24:32Speaker 2: So there are mitigating factors here. And because there are
- 24:37Speaker 2: so many mitigating factors, I'm really not sure who wins it.
- 24:41Speaker 2: I would lean toward Canelo to win the fight. I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 2: if somebody put a gun to my head and said
- 24:47Speaker 2: you have to make a prediction, I guess it would
- 24:49Speaker 2: be Canelo. But it wouldn't be with a great deal
- 24:53Speaker 2: of certainty. It would be one that I would be
- 24:57Speaker 2: making purely because boxing to a corner. So I think
- 25:02Speaker 2: it's possible for Bud Crawford to win this fight. It's
- 25:07Speaker 2: it's a big ask, but I think it's possible. Certainly,
- 25:12Speaker 2: he's not gonna win by knockout. I think we're pretty
- 25:14Speaker 2: sure that. And the problem is when you go to
- 25:16Speaker 2: a decision with Canelo Alvarez, oftentimes you don't farewell. Let's
- 25:21Speaker 2: be honest. He tends to win decisions, and even in
- 25:24Speaker 2: the fights he loses, there are often scorecards like the
- 25:27Speaker 2: draw card against Mayweather and a couple of the cards
- 25:30Speaker 2: against Bofol that are befuggling that you look at and say, well,
- 25:35Speaker 2: they give him a lot more credit than they should have.
- 25:37Speaker 2: So so there's a couple of things working against Crawford here.
- 25:42Speaker 2: One Canelo has an amazing chin and so knocking out stuff.
- 25:48Speaker 2: And number two, because Canalo Aarez does well, tends to
- 25:52Speaker 2: do well in the scorecards. That's a little tricky form
- 25:55Speaker 2: as well. But that doesn't mean Crawford can't win this fight.
- 25:58Speaker 2: He can.
- 26:00Speaker 5: James himself has made the point about Canelo losing on
- 26:03Speaker 5: the cards in Vegas is very very difficult. It's very unlikely.
- 26:06Speaker 2: So it doesn't happen, doesn't happen often, No, but I
- 26:11Speaker 2: mean he has it has happened, but it's not or
- 26:14Speaker 2: anywhere for that matter. You know, he's one of those
- 26:18Speaker 2: iconic figures that tends to get the benefit of doubt.
- 26:21Speaker 2: It seems sure.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Well, we cannot thank you enough, mister Bernstein. It was
- 26:26Speaker 5: wonderful to have you here. Do you have any social
- 26:28Speaker 5: media handles where people can keep up with what you're doing.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I'm on Instagram, and I'm on X or Twitter whatever
- 26:36Speaker 2: it's called these days, and also TikTok so any of
- 26:41Speaker 2: those places, they can just look me up. And I'm
- 26:44Speaker 2: pretty active as active as I can be on those.
- 26:48Speaker 5: Great, we're not even on TikTok, so, I guess we
- 26:50Speaker 5: got to catch up with you.
- 26:51Speaker 2: So yeah, I don't know. I got put on there,
- 26:54Speaker 2: and I'm like, okay, you know, so I'm doing my
- 26:56Speaker 2: best to navigate it. So some of them are hard
- 26:58Speaker 2: to navigate so well for me anyway, But I do
- 27:02Speaker 2: my best to navigate it and provide some content for people,
- 27:06Speaker 2: and uh and so it's it's a great way to,
- 27:11Speaker 2: you know, to reach out to people. And back in
- 27:14Speaker 2: the day, right, we never knew what people were thinking. Right,
- 27:17Speaker 2: You never knew exactly what boxing fans were thinking. Sometimes
- 27:22Speaker 2: it was better, occasionally not happy with what we do
- 27:26Speaker 2: in here. Uh so, but but nonetheless, you you get
- 27:31Speaker 2: a feeling, you get your fingers on the pulse of
- 27:34Speaker 2: what is going on out there, which was hard to
- 27:37Speaker 2: do before.
- 27:39Speaker 5: I personally think we know too much about each other
- 27:41Speaker 5: these days, but hey, you know.
- 27:42Speaker 2: That we probably do, and we probably we probably shared
- 27:46Speaker 2: to make us we don't need to share, but not
- 27:49Speaker 2: to mention the negativity, which sometimes is mind boggling. But
- 27:53Speaker 2: but you know, the funny thing about all that, in
- 27:56Speaker 2: my opinion, is you can have some amazing uh communications
- 28:06Speaker 2: on it, and then you can have the worst communications
- 28:12Speaker 2: on it. So it's it's fascinating to me and it's
- 28:16Speaker 2: kind of the good with the bad.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Well, very insightful and again in order to have you here, Sarah,
- 28:22Speaker 5: thank you so much for gracing our humble podcast and
- 28:25Speaker 5: hopefully can have you back to discuss the further fights.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I will. Hey, Jamison, you're invited to come out
- 28:31Speaker 2: to the show on Thursday if you want.
- 28:32Speaker 3: To appreciate you.
- 28:35Speaker 5: All right, have a good name missing. Wow, what an
- 28:40Speaker 5: interview with the legend Al Bernstein. What did you How'd
- 28:43Speaker 5: you feel about that, Jamison?
- 28:44Speaker 4: I was dope man like, answered the questions very well,
- 28:47Speaker 4: wealth of knowledge, a lot of experience.
- 28:49Speaker 3: It was really cool. It was really good.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Uh.
- 28:51Speaker 4: He he makes you want to feel excited for boxing,
- 28:54Speaker 4: and he's a great representation and ambassador of the sport.
- 28:56Speaker 4: And that's all you ask for because boxing sometimes has
- 28:59Speaker 4: a bad name. So having someone that's experienced and that
- 29:02Speaker 4: is knowledgeable and that's not arrogant when they're describing is
- 29:05Speaker 4: really cool.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I've said it many times. It's the greatest sport
- 29:09Speaker 5: in the world, my favorite sport. I love it more
- 29:11Speaker 5: than most things. But sometimes things happen. You know, we're
- 29:13Speaker 5: not going to get into this, but you sent me,
- 29:15Speaker 5: you said to the group Chaede promo for Mayweather versus Tyson,
- 29:19Speaker 5: and I was like, man, do I hate boxing? Do
- 29:21Speaker 5: I actually hate the sport? It's so trashed.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Sometimes it's the greed, man, the greed is Unfortunately, that's
- 29:29Speaker 4: what it is.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Man. Why Unfortunately it is what it is.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Sure, But like you said, for someone to come on
- 29:35Speaker 5: here and just talk about it the way talk about
- 29:37Speaker 5: the sport the way he does. Who's been in it
- 29:39Speaker 5: for almost as long as we've been alive, Like, let's
- 29:41Speaker 5: be real, it's credible, and yeah, it just it. I
- 29:45Speaker 5: still it's gonna make me continue loving the sport no
- 29:47Speaker 5: matter when it breaks my heart.
- 29:49Speaker 6: I will.
- 29:49Speaker 5: I will text it in the middle of the night,
- 29:51Speaker 5: even though it's done me wrong so many times, and
- 29:53Speaker 5: be like, who's fighting next. Let's talk a little bit
- 29:57Speaker 5: more about the mega fight, So Jamison, let's do It's
- 30:01Speaker 5: a couple of bits of final analysis here on Canelo
- 30:04Speaker 5: Elveris versus Bud Crawford. Let's start with this, what do
- 30:07Speaker 5: you expect to see from each fighter this weekend?
- 30:10Speaker 4: Oh man, that's a good question. Canal is gonna be Canelo.
- 30:16Speaker 4: You're gonna have the same plant attack. I don't see
- 30:19Speaker 4: a whole lot different out here. You're gonna see a
- 30:21Speaker 4: guy that sharp. You're gonna see a guy that's gonna
- 30:23Speaker 4: use his skill set. He's gonna you know, he's gonna
- 30:26Speaker 4: be on the defense of a lot, but also he's
- 30:28Speaker 4: one of the rare fighters that can attack but also
- 30:32Speaker 4: defend at the same time. It's very red you can
- 30:34Speaker 4: find a guy that size, that skill set, that can
- 30:38Speaker 4: attack but also not leave himself open for big shots.
- 30:42Speaker 4: And also he has a very underrated chin that doesn't
- 30:44Speaker 4: get the respect as you know you would, uh you
- 30:48Speaker 4: would more likely get with other people. However, I think
- 30:52Speaker 4: Crawford's gonna fight a good fight. The issue is this,
- 30:54Speaker 4: The biggest issue is but moving up and wait at
- 31:00Speaker 4: this age is a very tough thing to do. It's
- 31:03Speaker 4: not impossible, but I really haven't seen it fighting this
- 31:07Speaker 4: caliber of opponent. We've seen guys move up multiple classes
- 31:10Speaker 4: but fight lesser tiered opponents. You're fighting one of the
- 31:14Speaker 4: best cars in the world, and you're moving up, and
- 31:17Speaker 4: the fight we saw you at a larger weight didn't
- 31:20Speaker 4: look great. You move from one forty seven to one
- 31:22Speaker 4: fifty four wasn't impressive. It was I and then I
- 31:26Speaker 4: move in the well sixty eight. I just don't see it.
- 31:29Speaker 4: I don't see I think he's gonna fight a great fight.
- 31:31Speaker 4: I think he's gonna put his best foot forward. I
- 31:34Speaker 4: do something that's gonna be good enough. I think we
- 31:36Speaker 4: have a good fight. If I had to bet it,
- 31:38Speaker 4: i'd put a little something on the draw, just a
- 31:41Speaker 4: little something, not a whole lot, but a little change
- 31:43Speaker 4: in the draw, because boxing is weird sometimes.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Hey, after I didn't bet on the draw on the
- 31:48Speaker 5: Pecchio his most recent fight, I'm never not betting a
- 31:52Speaker 5: driver to get on major fights. Like I was so
- 31:54Speaker 5: mad at myself, but even I said it before the fight,
- 31:57Speaker 5: I'm like, well I should, but then I just forgot. Okay,
- 32:00Speaker 5: let me give you a little let me count that
- 32:03Speaker 5: a little bit. You know, I think Bud is being
- 32:06Speaker 5: counted out to a little too quickly. And here's the thing.
- 32:09Speaker 5: I love both guys, but and Canelo are some of
- 32:12Speaker 5: my favorite fighters at the moment. Canelo, even though he's
- 32:15Speaker 5: slowed down, you know, he's still my guy and he's
- 32:18Speaker 5: not the quality Canlo that he was three three to
- 32:20Speaker 5: five years ago. But him slowing down is a big deal.
- 32:25Speaker 5: We kind of tend to stick to the first piece
- 32:27Speaker 5: of information that we get, and everybody says, you know,
- 32:30Speaker 5: Bud didn't look that great against the Matdram fight the
- 32:32Speaker 5: first time he went up the weight class. Okay, you
- 32:34Speaker 5: know I rewatched the fight. Maybe not as impressive as
- 32:37Speaker 5: always been, But what if he just had an off night.
- 32:40Speaker 5: That can happen to anybody, you know, I'm not gonna
- 32:42Speaker 5: necessarily say that. You know, it was the weight class increase.
- 32:46Speaker 5: He wasn't as fast as he you as he was,
- 32:49Speaker 5: but he wasn't slow. He was not slow. We also
- 32:53Speaker 5: don't know how whether Bud cuts weight. Typically Canelo has
- 32:58Speaker 5: thread upstad. I don't know if you've heard him and it,
- 33:00Speaker 5: but Canelo is straight up said he cuts weight, like
- 33:02Speaker 5: he says, he walks around in like one eighty something
- 33:04Speaker 5: and he cuts Yeah, I don't know how much Bud
- 33:07Speaker 5: walks around with I don't know that I've ever heard
- 33:09Speaker 5: him say that, so has he been is he going
- 33:12Speaker 5: to be close to, you know, a weight he's comfortable at?
- 33:14Speaker 5: Just in general in this fight, he's very strong and
- 33:18Speaker 5: he's jack. Here's another thing I was thinking about recently.
- 33:22Speaker 5: I know height doesn't really matter that much with weight classes,
- 33:25Speaker 5: but Canelo's five eight, like actually five seven and a
- 33:27Speaker 5: half Buds five eight. I see Canelo is actually kind
- 33:31Speaker 5: of a little guy that got beefy. He's not a
- 33:34Speaker 5: huge dude.
- 33:35Speaker 2: You know.
- 33:35Speaker 5: He fought a huge dude of Bebo Bible was a
- 33:37Speaker 5: huge dude. It didn't go well. I think Canelo's better
- 33:40Speaker 5: suited for somebody like But the way he's moved before
- 33:45Speaker 5: against guys like Plant, against Billy Joe Saunders, he moves
- 33:48Speaker 5: like a little guy who just put on some weight.
- 33:50Speaker 5: But that doesn't make you not a little guy, you
- 33:52Speaker 5: know what I'm saying. So I think that I think, honestly,
- 33:57Speaker 5: Canelo would do better if he went down await class
- 34:00Speaker 5: yes to fight Bud, because I think that him with
- 34:05Speaker 5: his age slowing down as much as he has, is
- 34:07Speaker 5: going to be trouble. But is still not only is
- 34:10Speaker 5: he fast, not only is his switch hitter, and Canelo
- 34:13Speaker 5: has had trouble with South Pouds before. But smart he
- 34:17Speaker 5: also knows that Canelo on the cards is Vegas. Is
- 34:20Speaker 5: a tricky proposition, Like I'm just there's no way he
- 34:22Speaker 5: doesn't know that, right, So I feel Bud is going
- 34:28Speaker 5: to attempt to win on points. I don't believe he
- 34:31Speaker 5: can knock Canelo down, definitely not knock him out. But
- 34:35Speaker 5: if Bud can look like Devin Haney versus h craiky
- 34:40Speaker 5: guy George Campbos is junior, no question that Haney embarrassed
- 34:46Speaker 5: that man on Craikie island like all throughout, sticking moving,
- 34:50Speaker 5: getting in with the jab over and over. Cambos is
- 34:54Speaker 5: not being able to land partly anything on Hani. If
- 34:58Speaker 5: he does that, it might even still be a split decision,
- 35:02Speaker 5: like you know, one guy might call it a drawer
- 35:04Speaker 5: or something. But I think Bud has that ability to
- 35:07Speaker 5: uh to do that and just kind of make it
- 35:09Speaker 5: clear that he outclassed Canel. I don't know, I don't
- 35:15Speaker 5: know where the strength factor, the power factor comes in,
- 35:19Speaker 5: but as strong as hell, Canelo is a power puncher.
- 35:22Speaker 5: But we did see him, you know, trying to throw
- 35:24Speaker 5: power punches against William Skull and not really getting past
- 35:26Speaker 5: that defense. So what are your thoughts on that? On
- 35:29Speaker 5: each guy's power when it.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Comes to you're fair, I is more than fair. My
- 35:33Speaker 3: thing is this does power?
- 35:36Speaker 4: Does power work versus a guy that has a great chin,
- 35:41Speaker 4: Like That's my thing. Like I don't know where Crawford's
- 35:44Speaker 4: power is. Wheresus a guy with Canelo's chin. That's the
- 35:48Speaker 4: issue I have. I don't know where you know, I'm
- 35:51Speaker 4: not sure. And I think is one thing to having
- 35:55Speaker 4: power is another thing to be able to land that power.
- 35:57Speaker 4: To you land that power consistently is the biggest quest hit.
- 36:02Speaker 5: But bud it has a very good ring IQ And
- 36:04Speaker 5: the thing about the Mata mouth fight that I rewatched,
- 36:06Speaker 5: it seems to be he started slow, was getting caught
- 36:08Speaker 5: with a lot of really good hooks, taking those power
- 36:12Speaker 5: punches in stride, mind you, but then he seemed to
- 36:14Speaker 5: seemed to timed about. He seemed to time out madaw
- 36:17Speaker 5: for a while. There's a few rounds there when he
- 36:19Speaker 5: was getting in between the punches, which is, you know,
- 36:22Speaker 5: always been excellent at Canelo has also been excellent at
- 36:25Speaker 5: that in the past. In recent time not so much,
- 36:29Speaker 5: I feel like, but it's gonna but it's gonna land
- 36:32Speaker 5: some power punches consistently that will not hurt break or
- 36:35Speaker 5: hurt Canelo. No, but I think they're gonna look good
- 36:37Speaker 5: as hell.
- 36:38Speaker 4: No, they're gonna look good. It's gonna be a back
- 36:40Speaker 4: and forth. They're gonna see a lot of action, but
- 36:43Speaker 4: it won't be like brawling action. It will be activity,
- 36:46Speaker 4: which is good, which is good for the fight. However,
- 36:49Speaker 4: if you're looking for a knockdown, I don't think you
- 36:51Speaker 4: see this fight. I don't think it's just a fight
- 36:52Speaker 4: for that. I think you're gonna be You're gonna an
- 36:54Speaker 4: actual boxing match. I just think that what Crawford and
- 36:58Speaker 4: Earl Spinch are not gonna see. I think I would
- 37:00Speaker 4: watch to t people's expectation that you're not going to
- 37:02Speaker 4: see you get dropped like that several times. That's not this,
- 37:05Speaker 4: that's not gonna happen.
- 37:06Speaker 3: It's not.
- 37:07Speaker 4: However, I think you can see an active fight where
- 37:09Speaker 4: both guys are actively fighting good fights. I think you
- 37:12Speaker 4: can get that for sure.
- 37:14Speaker 5: Do you think Canelo can knock down.
- 37:16Speaker 3: But yes, yes, power wise boxing skills, yes, absolutely, I.
- 37:21Speaker 5: Think so too. I think he's knocked down bigger guys
- 37:24Speaker 5: like Berlanga if he can do that. But again not
- 37:27Speaker 5: to not to equate Bud Craftford with Berlega by any means,
- 37:30Speaker 5: Uh yeah, please, I'm not doing that. I'm just I'm
- 37:35Speaker 5: just saying that, you know, the power is the power
- 37:37Speaker 5: is is real. Here's another factor. Now, does Canelo how
- 37:42Speaker 5: hard will Canelo train? Does he really think? But is
- 37:45Speaker 5: a is a risk or or or a danger I guess?
- 37:49Speaker 5: Or is he like easy work? Because I'm not saying
- 37:52Speaker 5: that this is the case, but a case could be
- 37:55Speaker 5: made that Canelo has cared less, especially since he's been
- 37:58Speaker 5: hooked up with the Saudi's and he's getting this. He
- 38:01Speaker 5: might think this is an easy ps, you know, easy
- 38:03Speaker 5: ps win for a big Bay Day. I don't know,
- 38:05Speaker 5: what do you think.
- 38:06Speaker 4: I think he definitely cares. It's a legacy fight. This
- 38:08Speaker 4: is one of the names that when you go in
- 38:10Speaker 4: Hall of Fame they talk about who you defeated. You know,
- 38:13Speaker 4: he's fought good fighter, great fighters, a lot of big names.
- 38:17Speaker 4: But this is a big, big situation because both guys
- 38:20Speaker 4: are similar part of their careers. Both guys are basically
- 38:22Speaker 4: one and two in the sport in a sense, you know,
- 38:25Speaker 4: in a grand sense, there.
- 38:26Speaker 3: You know.
- 38:28Speaker 4: With that being said, if he wins this, it makes
- 38:32Speaker 4: his resume that much better. If he loses it, it's
- 38:36Speaker 4: not the end of the world. But if he wins it,
- 38:38Speaker 4: it's it makes it top top notch man. It's very impressive.
- 38:43Speaker 4: So he's definite taking a serious but also his thing.
- 38:46Speaker 4: You have, you have opportunity to make another fight. If
- 38:49Speaker 4: it's close, we're gonna get another fight. If it's if
- 38:52Speaker 4: again this one fifteen, one thirteen, all the cards, get
- 38:55Speaker 4: ready for get ready for May.
- 38:56Speaker 3: We're getting a fight in Ai. That's I mean, we
- 38:59Speaker 3: we know how this works.
- 39:00Speaker 4: I think a lot from the are very prideful. That's
- 39:03Speaker 4: the first thing. Also, they're both great fire. They're not
- 39:07Speaker 4: gonna take you. No, there's no way, there's no way.
- 39:10Speaker 4: Not too many eyes are on them. Everybody's watching. Everyone
- 39:13Speaker 4: has no flukes or has access to Netflix. Everybody's watching everyone.
- 39:18Speaker 3: Everyone.
- 39:20Speaker 5: Well, I'm very excited. I think that you know, like
- 39:24Speaker 5: I said, as a Canelo fanboy, I do think he's
- 39:27Speaker 5: been a little bit, uh, he's lost a step lately.
- 39:29Speaker 5: But I would hope that's normal, Like yeah, yeah, and
- 39:33Speaker 5: I would I would hope that he knows that this
- 39:36Speaker 5: is for all the marbles, you know, like, this isn't
- 39:39Speaker 5: just some some tune up fight. This isn't William Skull again.
- 39:42Speaker 5: And no disrespect to Skull, I mean, he's you got
- 39:44Speaker 5: in that ring. You always got to respect the guy
- 39:46Speaker 5: for doing that. But the difference in the outcome of
- 39:49Speaker 5: the fight, the quality of the fight, is very clear.
- 39:52Speaker 5: So I kind of hope that we see, if not
- 39:54Speaker 5: the old Canelo, I see somebody that really really is
- 39:57Speaker 5: hungry and wants that win. But I also, man, it's
- 40:01Speaker 5: it's so hard to get me to bet against budget.
- 40:03Speaker 5: I just it's so hard.
- 40:05Speaker 4: Uh, I understand I where you're coming from. My thing
- 40:08Speaker 4: is we know boxing very well. So when you know boxing,
- 40:11Speaker 4: you understand it. You have to use what you have
- 40:15Speaker 4: in order to make quality decisions. You have to use
- 40:18Speaker 4: your boxing knowledge to make sound decisions.
- 40:21Speaker 3: And I think it would be unfair.
- 40:23Speaker 4: If we didn't use our expertise in making the correct
- 40:26Speaker 4: analyst And now it's in my opinion, could be wrong.
- 40:29Speaker 4: But we know boxing more than most and we have
- 40:33Speaker 4: to use what we have. Now, something crazy apps on Saturday.
- 40:35Speaker 4: Hey it happens, we'll cover it that way. But going
- 40:38Speaker 4: into it, we gotta be honest with everything.
- 40:40Speaker 5: Sure, and I think that yes, we know boxing more
- 40:42Speaker 5: than most, but a lot of people know Canilo overeas
- 40:44Speaker 5: you know, he's he's a very well known name face
- 40:47Speaker 5: of boxing. Bud Crawford is not as well known as
- 40:50Speaker 5: he should be. So I think there's a lot of the.
- 40:54Speaker 3: That's on him.
- 40:56Speaker 5: That's fair, that's fair, that's fair. I'm not even arguing
- 40:58Speaker 5: that point. All I say is that it's easier for
- 41:00Speaker 5: somebody say Canelo. I know Canelo is a tough guy.
- 41:02Speaker 5: He's went a lot of fights, you know, I don't.
- 41:04Speaker 5: I don't think Bud gets his is due from people
- 41:09Speaker 5: like the real analysts for his style and the trouble
- 41:11Speaker 5: he could the trouble it could be for Canelo now,
- 41:14Speaker 5: is what I'm saying.
- 41:15Speaker 4: No, I know, I hear you on that. My thing
- 41:17Speaker 4: with Budd is this, Budd's took with top rank so
- 41:19Speaker 4: long and didn't do a whole lot of self promoting.
- 41:22Speaker 4: So it's hard when you're on a promotion company that
- 41:26Speaker 4: is not known that great for marketing against fighters and
- 41:29Speaker 4: also fight. Like Alf said, like you know, you know
- 41:32Speaker 4: every sometimes guys instantly fight you know guys, So yeah,
- 41:36Speaker 4: I personally, I just think that a lot of Crawford's
- 41:43Speaker 4: shortcomings are self inflicted, which sucks because imagine if he
- 41:46Speaker 4: did have great marketing, Imagine if he did have different
- 41:50Speaker 4: opponents throughout the years, were totally different conversation.
- 41:53Speaker 3: This fight is just that much bigger than.
- 41:55Speaker 5: Sure, sure, No. I think he absolutely deserves to be
- 41:58Speaker 5: one of the faces of boxing day as well, and
- 42:01Speaker 5: I think that he hasn't gotten his due. It's like
- 42:04Speaker 5: people know who he is, but not enough or people
- 42:07Speaker 5: know who he is but don't put enough respect on
- 42:08Speaker 5: his name. Is like, uh, that's what it is.
- 42:10Speaker 3: That's what it is.
- 42:11Speaker 5: Yeah, he's like Wesley Stipes household named great career, but
- 42:15Speaker 5: he has not been regarded as the greatest action star
- 42:18Speaker 5: of the nineties as I think he is better than
- 42:21Speaker 5: Bruce willis better than Arnold And that's a whole it's
- 42:25Speaker 5: a whole different conversation, the whole other podcast. So okay,
- 42:28Speaker 5: let's before we go, We've got an official prediction from Warrenshaw,
- 42:33Speaker 5: head of nineteen Media group, you know, the network here
- 42:35Speaker 5: that has allowed us the opportunity to do the show
- 42:38Speaker 5: for as many episodes as we have. So we're going
- 42:40Speaker 5: to play his official prediction and then we're going to
- 42:42Speaker 5: finish off with ours straight up, no equivocating what we
- 42:46Speaker 5: think is going to happen. But let's bring in a
- 42:48Speaker 5: recording of Warren, what do you got for us?
- 42:51Speaker 6: Let's get everybody's your boy. Warrenshaw, co founder of nineteen
- 42:53Speaker 6: Media Group, co host of The Basin NBA podcasts, and
- 42:56Speaker 6: host of Dope Interviews, rocking with the fellas at the
- 42:59Speaker 6: Next Company, and they're great coverage of Canelo Verros Crawford,
- 43:02Speaker 6: and in this match, I'm gonna go with Canelo over
- 43:05Speaker 6: Crawford and the split decision. I'd like to go with Bud,
- 43:08Speaker 6: but I just can't see it happen in Canelo's split decision.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Hey, folks is barred from behind the scenes. Just wanted
- 43:14Speaker 1: to thank Warren for his thoughts on the fight and
- 43:16Speaker 1: also share the other bosses prediction. Mo the co owner
- 43:19Speaker 1: of nineteen Media Group, has also chimed in and he
- 43:22Speaker 1: says he's going with Canelo almost entirely due to the
- 43:25Speaker 1: weight that they're fighting at. In theory, Crawford should be
- 43:27Speaker 1: slightly slower due to the added weight, but the problem
- 43:30Speaker 1: is getting hit with a power shot of Canelo's strength
- 43:33Speaker 1: and size, so he thinks Canelo catches him by the
- 43:36Speaker 1: mid rounds. And also, funny enough, Moe wanted to know
- 43:39Speaker 1: from you guys how they thought the fight might go
- 43:42Speaker 1: five years ago, and they actually addressed that in the
- 43:45Speaker 1: conversation with the legend Al Bernstein. As you've already heard. Anyhow,
- 43:49Speaker 1: we appreciate the support of the mighty nineteen media group family.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Now back to the fellas.
- 43:55Speaker 5: All right, thanks, Warren, appreciate it. All right, I'll go first,
- 43:58Speaker 5: because Jameson, you're the person that straight up said this
- 44:00Speaker 5: fight would happen this year. I was skeptical, so I'll
- 44:02Speaker 5: let you have him last word on this. I am
- 44:03Speaker 5: going to go Bud Crawford win. Uh, split decision. One
- 44:10Speaker 5: judge will either say draw or even loss. But I
- 44:13Speaker 5: Am going to go for a Bud win that will
- 44:17Speaker 5: then lead to a rematch and put that on the record.
- 44:22Speaker 5: What do you think is gonna happen on Saturday? Jameson?
- 44:24Speaker 4: Canelo wins one seventeen one one sixteen, one eleven. Okay, yeah,
- 44:35Speaker 4: I think one sixteen, one seventeen to one eleven. Uh,
- 44:38Speaker 4: Canelo wins, close fight, good fight, but it'll be like, hey,
- 44:43Speaker 4: the better the better guy won the bigger guy won,
- 44:45Speaker 4: but the other guy fought a good fight. I just
- 44:48Speaker 4: think that as big as Canelo is, also he's used
- 44:52Speaker 4: to big fights. This is a very big fight. I
- 44:55Speaker 4: don't know how many fights Crawford has been in where
- 44:58Speaker 4: he has not been the best fighter in or uh,
- 45:00Speaker 4: you know, someone at the same talent level and also
- 45:04Speaker 4: someone can also make adjustments like Canelo can mid fight.
- 45:09Speaker 4: I'm very curious to see how Crawford responds to someone
- 45:12Speaker 4: who's able to make adjustments and also a box smarter
- 45:16Speaker 4: you know, with them as well. So I think it's
- 45:18Speaker 4: a good fight. I think in the later rounds will
- 45:21Speaker 4: be very telling to see how the lack of the
- 45:24Speaker 4: difference in weight impacts both guys.
- 45:27Speaker 3: To see. I know Craft's gonna be in a great shape.
- 45:28Speaker 4: I just don't know if you're getting hit by guy
- 45:31Speaker 4: that's bigger and your punches are not affect the guy
- 45:34Speaker 4: coming at you, I don't know how that works. I
- 45:36Speaker 4: don't know how that impacts it. But I think we
- 45:39Speaker 4: have a unanimous decision Canelo Canelo is the winner.
- 45:42Speaker 3: However, I think it will be close enough to have
- 45:44Speaker 3: rematch talks.
- 45:46Speaker 5: Okay, excellent, Now, just out of curiosity, what if they
- 45:49Speaker 5: fo five years earlier, what do you think the fight
- 45:52Speaker 5: would look like?
- 45:53Speaker 4: Then, Well, here's the thing. We got prime Canelo versus
- 45:57Speaker 4: prime Crawford. Age wise, I would still take Canelo because
- 46:01Speaker 4: the the waight difference, that's the issue. The way I mean,
- 46:05Speaker 4: Crawford's a natural one to forty seven guy. Canelo's not
- 46:09Speaker 4: like he fought Floyd at one fifty two ten years
- 46:13Speaker 4: ago or twelve years ago, whatever it was, and that
- 46:15Speaker 4: was a stretch. So yeah, man, uh Canelo, it's just
- 46:19Speaker 4: a different Like I said, it's not a traditional it's
- 46:22Speaker 4: a weird matchup. It's not a traditional fix fit. It's
- 46:26Speaker 4: more of a uncond unconventional match here. You now that
- 46:33Speaker 4: being said, well, I think is a better boxer, has
- 46:36Speaker 4: better skills. I think Crawford's a more skills fighter. I
- 46:39Speaker 4: think Canelo has improved so much in his game from
- 46:42Speaker 4: when we first saw him to now. It's it's amazing
- 46:45Speaker 4: because he's added so many different things in his repertoire,
- 46:48Speaker 4: especially you know how he uses his hands, his defense,
- 46:52Speaker 4: his head, movement, his shoulder, like, so many things have
- 46:55Speaker 4: changed when we first saw him. It's it's very very impressive.
- 46:58Speaker 4: But I think Crawford is a yal. Well, you can
- 47:00Speaker 4: make argument that Crawford doesn't have a lot of flaws
- 47:03Speaker 4: in his game as a fighter. I mean, that's the
- 47:05Speaker 4: biggest thing where Crawford has thing in this particular matchup. Man,
- 47:08Speaker 4: when you're giving away twenty plus pounds and you're getting going,
- 47:12Speaker 4: Skuy has a great chin. It's not like he has
- 47:13Speaker 4: a class jaw. You know, has a great chin. So
- 47:17Speaker 4: even if you're hitting him with a great shot, if
- 47:19Speaker 4: it's not impacting him that much, I don't know why.
- 47:22Speaker 3: I don't know how that works.
- 47:23Speaker 4: So but that being said that, I think Canelo is
- 47:26Speaker 4: just a bad matchup for Crawford. But I'm not gonna
- 47:29Speaker 4: roll butt out like Abud wins by split decision or
- 47:32Speaker 4: majority decision or whatever it is. Wouldn't be surprised.
- 47:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the way Canelo moved five years ago,
- 47:38Speaker 5: with both strength and speed, I think he would have
- 47:41Speaker 5: definitely cut but when the power shot he wasn't expecting. Yeah.
- 47:46Speaker 5: The thing that really really gives Bud a shot these
- 47:48Speaker 5: days is, like I said, the decrease in speed from
- 47:52Speaker 5: Panelo the past last few years, and it's just been
- 47:55Speaker 5: so clear, you know, just go back and watch. Let's
- 47:57Speaker 5: say Billy just unders from a couple of years ago,
- 48:00Speaker 5: but just the way he moved was just compared to
- 48:02Speaker 5: now and no, no, no, shade, you know, he's he's
- 48:05Speaker 5: still he's still a smart fighter. He's still definitely definitely
- 48:08Speaker 5: has adjusted being aware that he's slowed down a lot.
- 48:11Speaker 5: But it's just nine day to be honest with, right, cool,
- 48:15Speaker 5: So scale one to ten? How excited you for Saturday twelve? Twelve? Yeah? Yeah,
- 48:20Speaker 5: I was gonna say eleven actually, but you're right, definitely twelve.
- 48:25Speaker 3: You know, also that I gotta you know, I'm gonna
- 48:27Speaker 3: put the credit card out, you know.
- 48:29Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that pakes me until fourteen.
- 48:32Speaker 4: Damn ye had to pay charge on the cable bill.
- 48:37Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm cool.
- 48:39Speaker 5: This year we had to pay ninety bucks or watch
- 48:41Speaker 5: a shitty stream that was popping it out.
- 48:43Speaker 4: I'd be like, yeah, stream or just or just paying
- 48:46Speaker 4: a hundred dollars for a fight, man, you know, I mean,
- 48:50Speaker 4: I got it, but it's like, damn, why I don't really.
- 48:52Speaker 5: Want to you know, no, there's other stuff I can
- 48:54Speaker 5: do with it, exactly. Yeah, No, I I just hope
- 48:58Speaker 5: that the Foix stream is good. You know, I know
- 49:01Speaker 5: you mentioned before that there are the leven events have
- 49:03Speaker 5: been great. The only thing I know about it was
- 49:05Speaker 5: the Jake faul fight with Tyson. There's a lot of
- 49:07Speaker 5: complaints about it dipping in and out, so I hopefully
- 49:09Speaker 5: they get those kicks worked out. I'll be going to
- 49:12Speaker 5: my regular place, the neighborhood out on the South side
- 49:15Speaker 5: here in Tucson, the best place to watch boxing, and
- 49:17Speaker 5: hopefully the Mexicans come out and we all definitely.
- 49:21Speaker 4: Coming out, Like man, Mexican's definitely coming out. I'm curiously
- 49:24Speaker 4: gonna I'm curious how it's gonna be in Vegas because
- 49:27Speaker 4: this weekends, like I'm using a big weekend, like everybody
- 49:30Speaker 4: out from Thursday on. I don't know how it's gonna
- 49:33Speaker 4: be with the economy being the way it is, the
- 49:34Speaker 4: laws being the way there, I don't know.
- 49:36Speaker 3: I'm very curious.
- 49:37Speaker 4: Also, it's in a football stadium, so it's gonna be
- 49:39Speaker 4: like sixty thousand people in there. Very curiously how it's
- 49:42Speaker 4: gonna go. But I can't wait. Gonna have a story
- 49:44Speaker 4: to tell either way. But I'm definitely excited. You know,
- 49:48Speaker 4: we don't have a whole lot of these. There's not
- 49:49Speaker 4: a lot of these that we can even make if
- 49:51Speaker 4: you think about it, right, Like all the guys are
- 49:52Speaker 4: currently boxing, there's a lot of mega fights out there,
- 49:55Speaker 4: Like even with that being set with Tank and let's
- 49:58Speaker 4: say hypothetically he fought a shit Core.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Or hany or whoever, it's not in a football stadium. No,
- 50:03Speaker 3: you know what I mean, You know what I mean.
- 50:05Speaker 4: There's only a handful of fights that could be in
- 50:08Speaker 4: a football stadium. And honestly, as of right now, this
- 50:12Speaker 4: might be the only one I can actually think of
- 50:14Speaker 4: at all possible matchups that you can make.
- 50:16Speaker 3: I don't think there's another one that can be made.
- 50:18Speaker 5: So yeah, of current fighters, Yeah, unless you know, I
- 50:21Speaker 5: don't know Maywether in many fights back in.
- 50:23Speaker 4: The day, No if if Mayweather packed, yeah, was fought
- 50:27Speaker 4: when it was supposed to be fought. Yeah, you could
- 50:29Speaker 4: have had that at any football stadium in the world
- 50:31Speaker 4: and it would have slowed out. But that's a whole
- 50:34Speaker 4: different thing. And yeah, that's yeah, that's a mess of itself.
- 50:37Speaker 5: But yeah, sure, well, man cannot wait. We're gonna wrap
- 50:41Speaker 5: it up and uh, you know, get I'm gonna start
- 50:43Speaker 5: preparing for the fight now, just gonna start getting my
- 50:45Speaker 5: stomach getting take my tombes ready for all the food
- 50:48Speaker 5: and booze. I'm going to drink over the weekend at
- 50:50Speaker 5: the neighborhood so uh good. I'm gonna do stomach exercise,
- 50:53Speaker 5: but at the kind you think of. Jamie said, where
- 50:56Speaker 5: can people fight you? On social media? On Twitter at
- 50:58Speaker 5: the Jamison That's when you get me out the most.
- 51:02Speaker 6: Man.
