- 0:00You actually have to be on cocaine to be on this part
- 0:03there. What's up everybody?
- 0:33You're listening to yet another edition of Cocaine Willy, the
- 0:36official, a state representative on the college huddle.
- 0:40I'm your commissioner, Bob Trollsby.
- 0:41And as always, I'm joined by my Co host, the good chef Andre
- 0:45Napier. And the international man of
- 0:47mystery is gone yet again. And he went back to revisit the
- 0:53gravesite of the 2025 K State football season at Aviva Stadium
- 0:58in Dublin, Ireland. Would you?
- 1:02Would you go back had you gone, chef?
- 1:05Had you gone to the game? Do you think you'll ever go back
- 1:07to Yeah? I mean, I would.
- 1:09Everything I've heard is that that stadium and that I mean the
- 1:13venue, the place, the, the location, Ireland was awesome.
- 1:17I would go back. I don't know what kind of of
- 1:21sporting events they put on there.
- 1:22Obviously a rugby stadium, but like, I mean, do they do
- 1:26international matches there? I mean, I would go back for that
- 1:29like a international rugby match, like if.
- 1:32Gaylord Football. Yeah, New New Zealand was there.
- 1:36You know, maybe if you know, if it's a soccer match, hell, I
- 1:40could watch some Ireland soccer. But yeah, I would go back.
- 1:44I would love, I would love to visit.
- 1:46I would just let us say that I would love to be there.
- 1:50I think it is someone who went to the game.
- 1:52I think I would go back to Aviva Stadium for Gaelic football or
- 1:56rugby, rugby sevens perhaps. I don't think I would want to go
- 2:00see K State football play there again, unless that's.
- 2:03Fair. We're just really good, but it
- 2:06feels like feels like that place is cursed for us.
- 2:09Are they doing more football at this specific stadium this year
- 2:13or I don't know what the schedule is for Ireland this
- 2:16year I feel like. It yeah, another big TCU.
- 2:18It's TCU in North Carolina, right?
- 2:22Right. No balance.
- 2:22To do now I remember, but there's another KU's plan in
- 2:26Germany or England. London.
- 2:31Is it Wembley? Are they playing Wembley?
- 2:33So. I there's no way that they can't
- 2:39let, they can't let KU and Wembley.
- 2:41They can't let that happen. I don't want that to happen.
- 2:44That's a big feather in the captain play at Wembley.
- 2:47It is at Wembley Stadium. Wow.
- 2:51The Union Jack. Good on you, KU.
- 2:53Good on you, good on you. KUI will give you credit for
- 2:56that one, but that's as far as I go.
- 2:58That would be now that would be sick.
- 3:01That would be pretty sweet. I'm with you on that.
- 3:05I'm with you on that. Before we jump into the episode,
- 3:09we are going to give a shout out to our first sponsor, Auntie
- 3:11Maze Parlor, located at 616 N 12th St. in the heart of
- 3:15Aggieville, in the top corner of your screen here.
- 3:19If you're watching on YouTube or the video version of Spotify, if
- 3:22you have that, this QR code will take you wherever that is to the
- 3:27website. It'll take you to a full list of
- 3:30their upcoming events. It'll take you to their cocktail
- 3:33of the week, which is this week. Cocktail of the week, the Silver
- 3:38Spoon. Throughout the month of March,
- 3:41every Silver Spoon purchase provides $1.00 in support to the
- 3:45Center of Hope Warming Center. Great 'cause right there for the
- 3:50Silver Spoon cocktail. I do not see what is in it.
- 3:53It looks like it's Saint Germain London dried gin, some cucumber
- 3:58and some lime. So maybe like a like a gimlet
- 4:00situation? Gin.
- 4:04Dry gin. Tough.
- 4:06That is a tough. That is a tough drink to
- 4:08swallow, not going to lie. Not a dry gin guy.
- 4:12Bottom tier of all alcoholic drinks in my and and straight
- 4:17liquors. That is.
- 4:18That is. Is that considered a spirit?
- 4:20What is a spirit? I mean, yeah, yeah, I believe.
- 4:25I believe that's a spirit. That's a that's a bottom tier
- 4:29spirit. It's like like behind ghouls,
- 4:31goblins, all those things that could be considered, you know,
- 4:36things of the night. It is bad.
- 4:39I mean, I like. Probably top tier spirit.
- 4:42I like gin. I also like a a Gimlet and this
- 4:45is similar to Gimlet, but you've got Saint Germain instead of the
- 4:49simple syrup and a little bit of cucumber to add to some some
- 4:53freshness. I think it's going to provide me
- 4:55with there. So I, I personally, I would be a
- 4:58fan of this. I might have to make it at home.
- 5:00To be honest, I might have to. I would cross this out.
- 5:02I would try. I would try just for, you know,
- 5:07Anime's Parlor, the greatest parlor in all of Manhattan, KS,
- 5:12where you should be on game days and weekends, weekdays alike.
- 5:19Indeed, indeed. And they also have all sorts of

- 6:03go down to the parlor. So check them out, 616 N 12th
- 6:06St. Auntie maze.com.
- 6:09And yeah, check out all the stuff they got going on there.
- 6:12So this is our 200th episode of Cocaine Willie kind of burying
- 6:16the lead there. Shout out to us.
- 6:19We we survived for this long. I was crunching some numbers
- 6:24here. So when you look at podcasts
- 6:26that have made it to to 200 episodes, what that means is we
- 6:32are well under 5% of all podcasts that have reached this
- 6:36milestone. Out of the millions of podcasts
- 6:39that are out there, only about 400 or 500,000 podcasts out
- 6:43there in the ether are active, meaning they've published an
- 6:46episode in the last 30 to 90 days.
- 6:48And the the the average podcast publishes fewer than 20
- 6:53episodes. So we've 10 xed the average
- 6:55podcasts that are out there. So congratulations to us and
- 6:59give myself a pat on the back here real quick.
- 7:02We are we are in a small fraction of shows and if we get
- 7:05to 300 plus episodes like Scott has, shout out to Scott.
- 7:09We all love our friends Scott. We told him we'd.
- 7:11Give him OK. He's in he's in rarefied air.
- 7:17That would mean he's he's at the like less than 1% mark, I think,
- 7:20based on how many he's published.
- 7:22So pretty cool stuff there. Also, we'd be remiss not to to
- 7:26give a, a kudos and a shout out to our other Co host, Fireball
- 7:30Matt, who is who's travelling the world right now.
- 7:33So as he as he's want to do so he deserves some be able to do
- 7:38it without you guys. He deserves some.
- 7:42I wouldn't say, oh, overwhelming, you know, even
- 7:46overwhelming minority. Really, my boy Matt, you know,
- 7:51third wheel, if we, if we're being honest, this is the
- 7:54A-Team. I'm just kidding.
- 7:55I'm literally just kidding. Matt.
- 7:59Integral part to the program. Can't wait for him to be back.
- 8:03But 200 episodes, that is literally, you know where we
- 8:07from where we started to where we're at now.
- 8:10This is a total night and day. I think we we invested into the
- 8:14podcasting world. We took it serious, not too
- 8:17serious, but I think we just, we deserve, you know, we deserve
- 8:23our flowers at some point for just the longevity.
- 8:26I mean, it takes a lot to do things like we're what we're
- 8:30doing. I mean, dog days, bad times.
- 8:34I mean, not a lot of people would, you know, put up with
- 8:38what we're doing. And I think we deserve our
- 8:41flowers. You know, it's, it is a lot of
- 8:44work to do this thing. It is a hobby and, and at the
- 8:48same time, I, I enjoy doing it, but it does take work.
- 8:52It takes preparation time on my part to put together the
- 8:54outlines. It takes time to get things
- 8:56published and social media posts and things edited.
- 8:59So yeah, it is. It's a labor of love.
- 9:02It's fun. And I don't, I don't spend too
- 9:04much time on it, but I spend enough to where it does kind of
- 9:07eat into at least a few hours every every Tuesday, every week.
- 9:11So we do it for the fans. We enjoy interacting with you
- 9:14guys. We enjoy you guys commenting and
- 9:17and replying and getting involved on Twitter, YouTube,
- 9:20Spotify, wherever you're, you're listening to this or watching
- 9:23this. And if you do enjoy the show, if
- 9:25you like it, subscribe to our YouTube channel.
- 9:28Give us a like on the videos that that does help.
- 9:31Matt's been doing work on on his end to, to get some, some old
- 9:34basketball games published on our page as well.
- 9:37So I go to the cocaine will YouTube site.
- 9:39You'll see some of those old games.
- 9:40You'll see all of our episodes at least from Season 2 on when
- 9:44we started doing the video version.
- 9:47And yeah, it's it's been a lot of fun.
- 9:49So for our 200th episode, because there's not a whole lot
- 9:52to talk about, we're not going to belabor it with our terrible
- 9:56men's basketball team. We can talk a little bit about
- 9:58the women's team, but again, they're kind of on a trajectory
- 10:01for the WBIT at this point if we're being if we're being
- 10:04optimistic. And they've been a lot more fun
- 10:07to watch to to be to be perfectly clear about that.
- 10:10But it's not like I'm going to go in dissect Nick Toth's press
- 10:14availability from yesterday. So for today, for this episode,
- 10:18what we're going to do for a 200th episode special not
- 10:21featuring Matt, we're going to be AD for the day.
- 10:25So I've got a list of questions or scenarios to go through.
- 10:28And I, I want to have this become kind of a discussion
- 10:31point. And for those of you who are
- 10:33listening or watching to this add, add your commentary too.
- 10:37So we want to see you in the YouTube comments and the tweets
- 10:40in the replies talking about what your moves would be if you
- 10:43were AD at K state for a day. So and maybe it's not
- 10:47necessarily for a day, we're not time keeping this necessarily or
- 10:51gatekeeping how much time you're the AD.
- 10:53This is just if you're in the shoes of Jean Taylor, how are
- 10:55you approaching these scenarios is how I want to think about
- 10:58this. So my first question is, what is
- 11:00your first move if you're the AD at K state?
- 11:04This is open-ended. It could be anything.
- 11:07I think I have to make the perfect basketball higher.
- 11:10Obviously that is my number one job is making sure the people
- 11:16that are below me really know what they're doing, are all
- 11:21invested into Kansas State 100% and are trying to make the
- 11:26university and the athletic department a a notch above
- 11:32everybody else. I think a place like Kansas
- 11:36State, especially on the football end, if I'm taking over
- 11:40for Gene, I think he did a phenomenal job on the football
- 11:43end. But I think he really has to
- 11:45nail this basketball hire. And I think that I'm the right
- 11:50guy for the job and I can do it. But that is, that is my #1
- 11:54objective is having the the right staff.
- 11:57And they're, they're not only are they coaches and I give a
- 12:01lot of Flack for, you know, Tang and wanting to make better men
- 12:05out of his players and stuff. And you know, that is a, a
- 12:09crucial part. But they are brand ambassadors
- 12:12for the university. They are the figureheads of what
- 12:16your athletic department is. So that that is the number one
- 12:20objective. I mean, we can, we can get
- 12:22silly, like there's silly things that we could add, but I think
- 12:25realistically that is the number one thing that I'm doing as the
- 12:28AD. And I'm going to, I think that's
- 12:30fair. I think that's fair.
- 12:32Let's let's assume the basketball higher has been made
- 12:36and it is the perfect tire. Then what is your next move as
- 12:40ADI? Think, I think, I mean what's
- 12:49the oldest? I mean, what's when's the last
- 12:54time Bramlage got an upgrade? I mean, and obviously court has
- 12:59been done. Court has been done.
- 13:02Right. I think they did some box like
- 13:04some some of the loge boxes within the last 10 to 15 does.
- 13:08That does that. The connection between Bramlage
- 13:13and Bill Snyder Family Stadium, that that like Shamrock, Yeah,
- 13:17the Shamrock is that all connected within.
- 13:21It is. Oh man, that is.
- 13:23That's a sweet deal right there. I don't know.
- 13:26Also, I think you have a stadium question in this.
- 13:31I'm not sure. Yeah.
- 13:33So that would be like which stadium facility upgrade would
- 13:36you target? Target 1st, so.
- 13:38Also, you know, I don't know where the revenue of, you know,
- 13:45Rev sharing and where the revenue is going to come from
- 13:48into the future. And I don't know how a lot of
- 13:50schools are going to handle that.
- 13:51But if you're going to be I mean, obviously Utah took a lot
- 13:55of Flack for what they did. I don't know if I would go that
- 14:00far, but the. Private.
- 14:01Equity, yeah, the private equity part, but I don't think does the
- 14:05AD handle that. I don't know if that's a
- 14:07university president thing, but you know, somewhere to generate
- 14:14revenue for your athletic department, whether it's, you
- 14:18know, sponsors. I would I would be the first one
- 14:22with patches, to be honest. I think the the NCAA just
- 14:25granted that I'm doing that. I'm 100% in doing that.
- 14:31And you know, if you're really, really about it, depending on
- 14:36the the sponsor that you have, I'm making everything
- 14:39customizable. So let's say it is AI don't even
- 14:44know what, what brand would I want?
- 14:46Do you have UD FS in Kansas? I've never heard of that, but I
- 14:53haven't lived in Kansas. United United Dairy Farmers, do
- 14:57you buy the dairy farmers? I'm sure there's something.
- 15:00Yeah, I'm sure there's something involving I.
- 15:02Don't know something along those like even a bigger brand let's
- 15:05say. National Beef Council and have
- 15:08it say beef on it. Why would you add I mean?
- 15:11National Beef Council would be funny, but let's say, let's for
- 15:14instance, let's say Staples. Let's just, let's just just
- 15:18throw out Staples. I would have their obviously
- 15:22their. Their logo is known for its
- 15:25bright redness. I would make it purple.
- 15:29Yeah, that's, that's a good point though.
- 15:33You need to, you need to take that into consideration if
- 15:36you're doing the jersey patches. I know when you look at like the
- 15:39NBA or the NHL that have the jersey patches in the MLB has
- 15:43had them and Kansas. City is pretty silly.
- 15:46Quick trip one and it's red. You got to take that into
- 15:51consideration. I know like Colorado Avalanche,
- 15:54they got, I think IMA some kind of investment firm as a as a
- 15:58jersey sponsor, but they made it a white logo.
- 16:00So blends in with the jersey. So it's not this weird thing.
- 16:04I know like the LA Kings, they went with something that's just
- 16:06white. So it's white on the black.
- 16:08So blends in with the jersey pretty well.
- 16:11But Ibotta being the jersey sponsor for the Pelicans with a
- 16:16pink logo? Kind of a weird move there,
- 16:18right? Right.
- 16:20I don't know. I mean, I think it's I think
- 16:22it's something something along those lines would be my first
- 16:24move as AD, you know, just something to if I'm not, you
- 16:28know, doing the obvious stuff. But I think I think something
- 16:31cutting like that would be really cool.
- 16:33I think the the first ones to do that, there might be I've
- 16:37already somebody that's done it, but I'm I think I think this is
- 16:39a new rule. Yeah, and and LSU was the first
- 16:43one I think in the power for, to, to go for it.
- 16:46I forget who their sponsor is, but it's some, some Louisiana
- 16:49thing. But yes, I'm I'm doing that.
- 16:52But I'm taking it a step further.
- 16:53I'm I'm maximizing the potential revenue with court field
- 16:58sponsors for every sport. We're doing women's tennis.
- 17:03We're doing, I don't even know if you would be legally able to
- 17:07do this, but can you? Do you know how in baseball with
- 17:10the baseball diamond, you've got like the sponsor on the back of
- 17:12the ground? Can you do a bunker sponsor at
- 17:15Culvert Hills and have it have it be like your logo's in the
- 17:21sand? In the sand, it's about the
- 17:22purpose. I mean, like, I mean, you're
- 17:24going to have to get it unless there's some really good golf
- 17:27being played, you're going to have to get that.
- 17:29You're going to have to get that Well, well, I'm saying like if
- 17:33they're out there hitting your bunkers all the time you're at
- 17:37your sponsorship logo is not going to be there much longer.
- 17:41It's going to. Be mostly, mostly joking on that
- 17:45one. But seriously, Bill, Bill Snyder
- 17:47Family Stadium needs a field sponsor The tennis courts.
- 17:51If you can do something on the tennis courts, if you can do
- 17:53something with the track and field facility, if you can do
- 17:56something with Bramlage, sell the naming rights to Bramlage.
- 17:58I know you you may not be able to necessarily do something with
- 18:03Bill Snyder Family Stadium, but you could take the approach that
- 18:06like the Chiefs have with GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
- 18:10I know it used to be or maybe still is.
- 18:12I'm not sure if the Wagner Field name is still a thing at Bill
- 18:16Snyder Family Stadium, but you could, do you know the Shamrock
- 18:21trading Wagner Field at Bill Snyder Family Stadium?
- 18:24It gets a little convoluted, but you have to be able to drive
- 18:27this revenue and I don't understand why we've, you know,
- 18:31two years ago Jean Taylor was talking about selling the naming
- 18:34rights to Bramlage and getting the blessing from the Bramlage
- 18:36family to do so. Why we not done it yet?
- 18:39Why do we not have a court sponsor yet?
- 18:41Every, not every other team in the Big 12 certainly, but you
- 18:44know, Iowa State has Mid America Energy or whatever.
- 18:47They are a sponsor on the, on the field at, at, you know, Jack
- 18:51Trice Stadium. You've got other teams doing
- 18:53this already. Why?
- 18:54Why have we not done it yet? We can't talk about, you know,
- 18:5818 and a half million dollar buyouts for ex basketball
- 19:01coaches and not be trying to pursue whatever we can to try to
- 19:03maximize the revenue streams that are available to us.
- 19:06So if I'm AD even just for one day, I am working on securing as
- 19:11many of those sponsorships as humanly possible, knowing that
- 19:14some of those conversations have probably taken place.
- 19:17New Jersey patches. I'm doing all of that stuff.
- 19:20I agree with a lot of fans in that it's not the most visually
- 19:22appealing thing, but that's the way you have to go in this
- 19:26current landscape of college, college athletics.
- 19:28So that's where that's where I would go with my first move.
- 19:34Specifically. The next question I have is
- 19:37where, what, where would you invest more dollars into?
- 19:41This could be a specific sport. This could be a specific
- 19:44facility, you know, we're going to get more into specific
- 19:47facilities and things. This could be, you know,
- 19:50increasing the the salary pool for specific sport, whether it's
- 19:54football, basketball, whatever. Like what areas would you invest
- 19:58more of your own existing dollars into if you're the AD?
- 20:02That's tough. I mean, obviously the the money
- 20:06generator and the biggest brand is football.
- 20:12You're a little hand I it's just crazy the landscape of sports
- 20:16where we're at in terms of like the the public opinion of where
- 20:22the Big 12 is in terms of pecking order.
- 20:24You can invest as much as you want.
- 20:26Obviously Texas Tech did that. You know, they are investing the
- 20:31NIL dollars. And I think until the, you know,
- 20:34until the rules are settled, I think it has to be NIL.
- 20:38Now that I think about it, NIL is obviously the king and that's
- 20:41where you're investing all of your money.
- 20:43I think you have to if you want to be top echelon.
- 20:47But Texas Tech is doing that and they're still considered a
- 20:51lesser program. So maybe at this point you you
- 20:55keep you stay competitive, but you don't you know, I don't even
- 21:00know what the term would be sell the farm on like completely
- 21:04going in on this and you know, still be can in the public
- 21:08opinion considered a lesser than.
- 21:11So it it kind of is all for not. I mean, unless your, your plan
- 21:15is, you know, you want to be the number one team in the Big 12
- 21:19and you know it for however much we want to say it, the SEC and
- 21:25the Big 10 are going to dominate this sport.
- 21:27It's just, it kind of is what it is at this point until something
- 21:33changes along the lines of, you know, maybe pulling all revenue
- 21:38together from these TV contracts because they, these schools are
- 21:42just making so much more money than the average Big 12 team or
- 21:47the even the top Big 12 teams that you're, you're, you're at a
- 21:51lesser advantage. And, but I would invest in NIL.
- 21:55I mean, if you want to win now and in this landscape, you have
- 21:58to, you have to be 100% in that. And so NIL for both sports and
- 22:05all sports really, that's what's driving the better teams.
- 22:09And that that's just the facts of it.
- 22:12I think it's, I agree with you, I agree with you.
- 22:15I think if I'm trying to think maybe a little bit outside of
- 22:18the box here, I would I would invest in.
- 22:21And again, I'm not an ADII know a couple of guys who have been a
- 22:26DS over the years, but I haven't had like in depth conversations
- 22:31with them around like what an investment looks like when you
- 22:34talk about, let's say you want to do a home and home series
- 22:38with Nebraska or Oklahoma, like get some of those regional
- 22:44rivals back into the fold that they used to be old Big eight
- 22:47teams. You know, I don't I don't care
- 22:49as much about Missouri. We also did play a game with
- 22:52them recently. So that's not super top of mind.
- 22:54But if you could invest in some of these regional opponents,
- 22:58like in Oklahoma, like in Nebraska, like in Iowa even, or
- 23:02Minnesota, like exposing the fan base to other regions, other
- 23:07areas like you did with Dublin, you show the K State fans are
- 23:09going to travel no matter where, where the game is going to be.
- 23:12If it's on a different continent or if it's, if it's stateside,
- 23:15fans are still going to go to those games.
- 23:18I, I, I think it would, it, would it do a lot to provide
- 23:22some more exposure to K State as a brand to be able to have some
- 23:26marquee matchups with, with some of those Big 10 teams, if
- 23:30they're amenable to it with some of those SEC teams, like, you
- 23:33know, we have the Auburn one, we had the Miami one.
- 23:36I think those those two were successful, but you know, I want
- 23:39to have more of those mid tier big 10 teams.
- 23:42If I'm being honest, I would like to have Iowa or Wisconsin
- 23:45on the schedule because we've never made a trip there.
- 23:48I would like to have a Michigan State on the schedule.
- 23:50I feel like those would be really fun types of of games to
- 23:53invest in, but but obviously Nebraska, Oklahoma, those, those
- 23:59would be some really fun games to get back on the schedule in
- 24:02some sort of capacity. And I think from a, from a
- 24:05dollar standpoint, again, if we're trying to lean into
- 24:08maximizing revenue potential, you know, you're going to get
- 24:13fans, it's going to be shitty, but you're going to get fans
- 24:16from both of those fan bases that are going to, to fill up a
- 24:19significant portion of your stadium, whether they whether
- 24:21you want them to or not. You know, that's, that's going
- 24:24to maximize some of the dollars that you have at your disposal.
- 24:26If that's on the the resale market or, or even your own fans
- 24:29pockets are going to be able to take advantage of some of that.
- 24:32But I would invest in some of those more, those more regional
- 24:35types of opponents. And then the second piece is
- 24:39with these early season basketball tournaments, I want
- 24:42to, again, I don't know what you have to invest in order to be a
- 24:46part of that. I know the players here is going
- 24:48to be a good next step for us to be able to participate in that.
- 24:51But we've never played in the Maui Invitational, at least as
- 24:54far as I can remember. You know, Battle for Atlanta,
- 24:57some of those other tournaments, they, they get more eyeballs and
- 25:00have more marquee brands participating in it.
- 25:03I don't think there's any reason why K State can't participate in
- 25:06those types of tournaments instead of having to play in a
- 25:08high school gym in the Bahamas. Like, who cares about that?
- 25:11Who cares about Baja Mar? Like, I, I don't care.
- 25:16I don't care about whatever those are the those are the two
- 25:21areas that I would maybe invest more, even if it's not a dollar
- 25:25investment, invest more time, invest more time in building
- 25:28those relationships with those other ADS in order to secure
- 25:32some of those types of opponents, both for football and
- 25:35for basketball. And I feel like they've done a
- 25:38good job with it on the women's side with some of the things
- 25:40that they've done in the early, early season tournaments.
- 25:42The baseball team has done a good job of getting exposure in
- 25:45some of their early, early season.
- 25:47Kind of kind of, you know, the Arlington game that they just
- 25:50played for, for baseball, the Arizona games that they just
- 25:53played for baseball. I feel like some of the other
- 25:55sports have done a good job of it.
- 25:57You know, it's kind of two different things.
- 25:59But but that's that's a couple areas where I would invest some
- 26:01more time into. How far out are we in foot
- 26:06football schedules? I think are we up to 20-30
- 26:09something? 2032 maybe?
- 26:11Yeah, but even when it's, it's not totally decided because some
- 26:16of the I, I don't know like let me let me take a quick peek.
- 26:21I feel like we have a Washington state.
- 26:24Obviously we get Washington state, but we have like we go
- 26:26out to Pullman. I feel like we have like.
- 26:31NC State, Oregon State. Oregon State.
- 26:35So when you're thinking, when you're thinking Power 4, NC
- 26:38State's really the only actual Power 14 that we have scheduled
- 26:43and that's scheduled out to 2032.
- 26:46So honestly, when we when we went back, you know, even six
- 26:50years ago, we had a lot of these games already scheduled through.
- 26:54I think 2026 is what I had looked at or 2025 maybe is what
- 26:58I had looked at when, when Kleiman had took over, like the
- 27:01Army game was already on the schedule.
- 27:03I think for for quite some time Mississippi State had been on
- 27:06the schedule. Like when I was a student, they
- 27:08scheduled that home and home. Thanks Kirk Schultz for that.
- 27:11I guess. Thanks Kirk Schultz for
- 27:13Washington State as well. But you know, we have the
- 27:17opportunity in 282920302031 and 2032.
- 27:22I mean, 28 for sure, because we only have Texas State on the
- 27:26schedule. I don't consider Wazoo or Oregon
- 27:29State Power 4 anymore. So I in theory you could add a
- 27:33Power 4 opponent to that. I think whether you want to or
- 27:36not, because it's a loophole, but I think it would be fun for
- 27:40the fans to be able to add something in each of those
- 27:42years. And then, yeah, NC State is
- 27:44really the only home and home we have with a true Power 4
- 27:47opponent that's been scheduled out.
- 27:49Yeah, I would. I mean, obviously what you were,
- 27:52what you were going over is absolutely the perfect scenario.
- 27:55I think that builds up, you know, the hype for the season
- 27:59when you get a non con game that's really competitive, that
- 28:01could be potentially competitive in their players and fans are
- 28:07going to be invested in because you know, whether they're
- 28:12whether the players are coming from that area or, you know, the
- 28:16fans have something to, you know, a vested interest in it
- 28:20outside of just rooting for their own team.
- 28:23Yeah, you got a schedule. Well, and it makes me think of
- 28:26like the basketball, how Marco was the kind of the guy that was
- 28:31reaching out the teams just like the year prior, like a you want
- 28:34to jump on this schedule real quick.
- 28:36We need a couple more like I hope we're doing a little bit
- 28:40more than that obviously. And I hope it's not that simple,
- 28:44but you never know. I mean, maybe it is just so you
- 28:48reach out and be like, hey, Michigan State, I know you're
- 28:50got a, you got a vacancy in 2028.
- 28:54I know it's short notice, but hey, you wanted 2 years from
- 28:56now, you want to start a home in home in 2028 and 2030.
- 29:01I mean, why not? That would be that, that would
- 29:03be cool. I mean, obviously Michigan State
- 29:04is not the top one that you're looking for, but on Nebraska,
- 29:09like you said, even, I mean, no. OK, now that now this isn't
- 29:17power forward, but let me let me just throw this out there.
- 29:20Would it be fun to try to resurrect some demons with North
- 29:23Dakota State coming back to the FCSFCS level?
- 29:29That's right. That's right.
- 29:30They've been elevated, they've been held.
- 29:32They're going to be a Mountain West team.
- 29:34You know, you, you bring that up when you when you think about,
- 29:38yeah, they're, they're going to be in a little bit of an
- 29:40adjustment period. So it's going to be interesting
- 29:42to see how they make that transition.
- 29:44I don't know if I would go out so far as to schedule them
- 29:47necessarily. I think we need to do another UT
- 29:50Martin. The Skyhawks on the schedule
- 29:53again, Yeah. Give me.
- 29:57But it is an option now. It is an option now for.
- 30:00Sure, I think that would be super fun.
- 30:02I think that would be that one would stir up some shit that
- 30:07wouldn't stir up some shit and I, I would be here for it.
- 30:11But yeah, the scheduling is, it's something that you know,
- 30:14they they can handle and I think they should.
- 30:17Yeah, moving, I guess real quick.
- 30:20We're at about mid pod. Let's do the mid pod Heartland
- 30:25Beef Connection ad read. Folks, we're not talking about
- 30:29grocery store beef. As I hold on, put the QR code on
- 30:33the screen. There we go.
- 30:34QR code on the screen. That'll take you to
- 30:36heartlandbeef.net. Yes, folks, we're not talking
- 30:39about grocery store beef. Heartland Beef Connection
- 30:42connects Kansas and Midwest ranchers and families with each
- 30:47other, with one another. There's no middle man that
- 30:49there's no industrial processing and there's no mass produced
- 30:52beef. A lot of these ranchers are
- 30:54located in Kansas, and of course plenty of them are case theaters
- 30:58themselves. Same values, same worth at work
- 31:01ethic, just doing it out on the land instead of in athletics,
- 31:05which matters a lot to me as a 6th generation Kansan myself.
- 31:09Paul, friend of the program, started Heartland Beef
- 31:12Connection to help support Midwest ranchers by matching
- 31:15them directly with families looking to buy quarter, half,
- 31:18and whole beef shares. You know where your beef comes
- 31:21from, how was raised, and who raised it.
- 31:24Here's the part people don't expect.
- 31:26Not only does this beef taste better, it's actually cheaper
- 31:29per pound than grocery store beef when you buy directly from
- 31:33the source. Better quality, more
- 31:35transparency, and you're not paying for the middleman.
- 31:38If you care about supporting Kansas agriculture, keeping your
- 31:41money local, and eating beef that actually tastes the way
- 31:43beef should, this is the way to do it.
- 31:46Here's the best part, because you're listening to Cocaine
- 31:49Willie, you can get $25 off the Heartland Beef Connection match
- 31:53fee when you mention the podcast or use code CW25.
- 31:57That's code CW25. Check out Heartland Beef
- 32:00Connection at heartlandbeef.net or on that QR code on the
- 32:05screen. Real beef, real ranchers, better
- 32:08beef for your money. Chef, my question for you this
- 32:12week, OK, what is what is a beef dish that you have never had or
- 32:17never made but would like to have or make on your own?
- 32:20Never. OK, so never had and never had
- 32:24and never made or two two separate categories because I.
- 32:28Answer both. OK, never had.
- 32:32You know it's the same answer. For me, I've made a beef
- 32:36Wellington. That was going to be my.
- 32:39Answer. I've never sat down and ate it
- 32:41though. OK, You know, I'm sure it's
- 32:45fantastic. I think it's a little posh.
- 32:48I think it's a little overrated in my opinion.
- 32:52The beef is probably the most integral part of it.
- 32:55The puff pastry kind of just does what it does.
- 32:58The mushroom dextail is, you know, you know it is.
- 33:02It's an interesting part to it. And then prosciutto, I mean,
- 33:08that's you're really just layering on things that just, it
- 33:13just screams decadent and it's kind of overrated in my opinion.
- 33:17I would try it though. I would definitely want to, but
- 33:22I've made I've made plenty in my time as a chef.
- 33:26What I would want to make. You know, I think if I could
- 33:36choose like the finest No see, like I wonder when you're making
- 33:42Pho because I would I would use a bunch of different parts of
- 33:47the cow or the beef to to to make this whole, you know,
- 33:54process with a nice beef stock, a nice all that stuff and using
- 33:58different cuts. But I wonder what the best cut
- 34:01for the shaved thin beef would be in there.
- 34:06I don't. I would imagine maybe like a rib
- 34:08eye, but I don't know if you'd want it too fatty.
- 34:10I'm not sure what they even use in that to be honest.
- 34:12I've seen like flank steak or flap steak used for that as
- 34:16well, but it's shaved. It's shaved super, super thin.
- 34:19And yeah, rib eye, I've seen, I've seen rib eyes.
- 34:22I would love, I would love, I would love to do that.
- 34:26I've never made that before. I've only had it, so yeah, give
- 34:31me a beef too. Why not?
- 34:34I would love to know what people's comments, if there's
- 34:36any. That's Vietnamese, isn't it?
- 34:39That's Vietnamese. I would love if any viets are in
- 34:43the comments tell me what what kind of beef they're using.
- 34:48Had a lot of Vietnamese friends growing up in Wichita.
- 34:51There are a lot of Vietnamese in in Wichita.
- 34:53It's fantastic. The pho is great.
- 34:56Going over to friends houses and having homemade spring rolls
- 34:58like with the rice papers. Just yeah, Vietnamese food is
- 35:01one of my favourites. Bonnies.
- 35:03Yeah, I could, I could eat this stuff all day.
- 35:06Yeah, I have made pho. I have made pho.
- 35:10I haven't made it with beef though, so that's that's going
- 35:12to be my next that's going to be my next, next thing.
- 35:15I don't know if I can slice the beef that thin though.
- 35:17So if you've got. Any.
- 35:19Slicers, yeah, I don't have a slicer.
- 35:21I've chef Jet Tila has recommended throwing the meat
- 35:26once it's thawed, throw it in the freezer for like 40 minutes
- 35:30and then that'll firm it up enough to where you can you can.
- 35:33Change slice it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:36I've, I've seen the problem is I think for pho you want like
- 35:40real, like big, like big strips, real super thin, big wide
- 35:46strips. Cause I've seen people that need
- 35:49shaved steak. They just get like a frozen
- 35:51piece of meat and then just actual like a, like a, you know,
- 35:57not a grader, but what's the word?
- 35:59I'm looking like a peeler, like a random peeler that you would
- 36:01peel an apple with and just peel the outside of the meat and just
- 36:04get real thin strips. They're not very wide, but you
- 36:09know, yeah, it's. Got to be a sharp peeler too.
- 36:14All right, that's, that's plenty of of food talk for the night.
- 36:17But I, I do enjoy the food talk. Which stadium and facilities
- 36:22upgrade would you target 1st? I mean, feel like that I, I
- 36:31don't know, I feel like I kind of answered this.
- 36:33I mean, I, if I'm being just silly, I obviously the football
- 36:38stadium now one thing that like irks me and it's not like a big
- 36:42deal and it's not even really an irk.
- 36:45It's just, I find it interesting that we do our walkthrough
- 36:48through the parking lot and there's like really nothing
- 36:53there. It's, you know, just random
- 36:55guardrails. And I mean the, the parking lot,
- 36:58it's just a parking lot and they drop them the kids off and then
- 37:01they walk into the front of the stadium and they, they with the
- 37:06fans and all that stuff. I like how West Virginia does
- 37:09it. They go through the the parking
- 37:12lot, but it, it leads into like stairs where everybody's
- 37:17surrounded it. It's not necessarily just in the
- 37:19middle of the parking lot. So maybe if like a lead into the
- 37:25lead into the stadium is if that's a possibility.
- 37:29I don't know if that's a thing. I don't know.
- 37:32I don't know. I like I think that's what I
- 37:34would do. I would try to be necessarily
- 37:37just make is it a concourse? Is that what what that would be
- 37:42called? Let's let's combine these ideas.
- 37:45So my biggest issue with Bill Snyder Family Stadium and it's
- 37:49strictly an aesthetic thing is that you've got veneer and the
- 37:54West side that have this castle like architecture and then
- 37:59you've got the side that was finished in 1998.
- 38:03It's just, they, they've made a couple of improvements through
- 38:06the years to make it look a little nicer, but it's just,
- 38:09it's just stands like I would like to close it off and go with
- 38:14a similar architectural design or or theme.
- 38:18Your time on the. East side was yes, you could
- 38:20have those, you know, castle looking Nichols Hall looking
- 38:23Spires on the east side. close it off and then you have like a
- 38:29nice architectural landscape architect.
- 38:32Students from K State can design it.
- 38:34It can be part of a capstone project for them #1 landscape
- 38:37architecture school in the nation.
- 38:38By the way, you could build these limestone like you could
- 38:43build these planters like a little walkway through purple,
- 38:47purple flowers in these little flower planters have it be on
- 38:51both sides and have to stick that the players can walk in
- 38:54through there just kind of to the to the north of the new
- 38:57training, like the practice facility as they walk, you know,
- 39:00as they walk. Because the indoors, right, the
- 39:02indoor is connected over there to the the east side, right?
- 39:06No, it's a stand alone building, but it's adjacent to it.
- 39:12OK, I'm trying to. I'm trying to figure out where
- 39:15because I haven't been. I don't think I've been to the
- 39:17stadium since the indoors been up.
- 39:21But I guess maybe that would be too much because they built the
- 39:23indoors, they built the indoor facility and that has that kind
- 39:26of limestone look to it. Yeah, I don't know.
- 39:29I don't know, Maybe I'm rethinking this a little bit.
- 39:32No, I like, I like the walkway idea because maybe man, I would
- 39:39love to have, you know, just like let's get some AI
- 39:42renderings going. I would love a good.
- 39:45AI Rendering. But I think they need to do
- 39:47something with how the players walk in because that is such a
- 39:50big social media push that they put out there.
- 39:52And I love seeing the, you know, the young fans, families that
- 39:57are seeing their, you know, sons get ready for a football game
- 40:00and they're out there front row and, you know, they get a a hug
- 40:04and a high five. I just think it's a little not
- 40:06tacky. Tacky is a bad word to say for.
- 40:09That, but it's just they're out in the middle of the parking
- 40:11lot. And I think more can be done to,
- 40:15you know, judge it up, if you will.
- 40:20Yeah, meanwhile, I'll, I'll, you know, use my company's money to
- 40:24create a, a ChatGPT rendering of what this could look like.
- 40:27So yeah, we'll, we'll do that. All right, moving on.
- 40:32So I think I'm going to skip the next two here.
- 40:37I want to move on to Rev share, Rev share distribution and and
- 40:41dollars. So we've got a number of
- 40:44different sports that we that we sponsor, that we participate in,
- 40:48notably football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball,
- 40:51men's and women's golf, men's and women's track and cross
- 40:54country, women's rowing, women's tennis and women's soccer.
- 40:59When you look at the distribution for each of those
- 41:02sports, football's about 30% on average for most Power 4
- 41:06institutions, which is about 6:00-ish million dollars.
- 41:09Men's basketball is about 21 percent on average.
- 41:12Across Power 4, it's $4.3 million.
- 41:15Women's basketball 1.7 million, 8% volleyball 5.6%, that's 1.1
- 41:23million. Track and field, surprisingly
- 41:2611.2%, but I think it's due to the size of the team and the
- 41:30amount of scholarships that that are involved with that.
- 41:32It's 2.2, almost $2.3 million. Women's rowing 1.4 million,
- 41:40women's soccer 2 million, women's tennis 861,000, and then
- 41:47men's and women's golf are 287,000 each.
- 41:50I guess in the grand scheme of things, I feel like golf, all
- 41:54the facilities are already exist.
- 41:56You're really just travelling and sponsoring travel and then
- 42:00you've got the athletes. On the team and.
- 42:01Equipment. So kind of funny to think that
- 42:05golf might be the smallest. I'm absolutely, I know.
- 42:09If you're asking me which one am I promoting up and which one am
- 42:12I giving more to, no offense to women rowing.
- 42:17I mean absolutely zero offense, and I mean, this was all due
- 42:21respect. Golf at you cannot, I mean you
- 42:25cannot quadruple up golf with women's rowing and you just
- 42:31can't, cannot do that. And I, I hate that because I,
- 42:36you know, honestly, rowing is one of my favorite exercises.
- 42:41But. Yeah, I love a good row.
- 42:43I love a good row. Sitting on that machine.
- 42:46I think it's hilarious trying to like get into the motion.
- 42:49I think it's funny, but rowing, I've never seen a Kansas State
- 42:54competitive rowing match at all. And we've had women's golfers on
- 43:01our, you know, program that have done things at the Masters.
- 43:07You know, you just cannot let that happen.
- 43:10And I, I, I would invest into golf way more.
- 43:14I mean, collegiate golf is on TV, you know, I mean, yeah, I
- 43:20can't say that I've seen women's rowing anywhere outside of the
- 43:25Internet. And I think you could find
- 43:27anything on the Internet. So yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm investing
- 43:32in golf, way more women and women's and men's golf.
- 43:36It has to be a priority in my book.
- 43:39Maybe because I am a golfer and I'm biased, but you know, yeah,
- 43:42I'm gonna let my bias show. Well, The thing is, again, not
- 43:46to not to poo poo the women's rowing team by any means, but
- 43:50you, when you look at men's women's golf, like people know
- 43:53who Carla Bernard is, people know that you know, Ricky Fowler
- 43:59and, and Victor Hoffland went to Oklahoma State.
- 44:01Like there's an association there when people graduate and
- 44:04then make it to the tour, whether it's the LPGA or the PGA
- 44:07or liver, whatever. So I feel like that's an
- 44:11opportunity for branding. It's an opportunity for you to
- 44:13get your name out there as an institution and and draw more
- 44:16interest. Again, you're not necessarily
- 44:19getting as many eyeballs on men's and women's collegiate
- 44:22golf as you are on the Masters or the PGA, but it is it at
- 44:27least an association that you can have with with your
- 44:30institution. When you look at a player that's
- 44:33on the tour, maybe it is worth investing a little bit more in,
- 44:38in scouring some of the talent that's going through some of the
- 44:40amateur circuits and things like that.
- 44:42So I'm with you on that. I'm with you on that.
- 44:45Also. I do have to share.
- 44:46This is the really shitty rendering that that Chad GBT
- 44:51came up with. So I'm going to share this here.
- 44:56A shout out to Robert Strep. You know, I think he's not, he's
- 45:01nowhere. He hasn't been nowhere near as
- 45:03successful as, like we said, Victor Hovlin or a Ricky Fowler.
- 45:09But that is a Kansas State alum that is on the PGA Tour that has
- 45:14been doing, you know, he's been making and not recently, but you
- 45:19know, he is a Kansas State alum that has been on the tour for a
- 45:24while. And you know, we got to give him
- 45:26more love. We got to make it more prominent
- 45:29and make it more acceptable and more prestigious to be a Kansas
- 45:35State alum golfer. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:38But these renderings are sweet. It's it's horrible.
- 45:42This is horrible. No, look, look at this.
- 45:44So on the. What's going on with that bottom
- 45:46picture on? The on the top image, the top
- 45:49image they are showing stands on the opposite side of where the
- 45:53field is. This shows you how bad AI is.
- 45:59The second image. Basically what I asked for was I
- 46:02want to retain the existing stands, not eliminate the cause
- 46:07of. This effectively eliminates the
- 46:08upper deck and then replaces it with something that would more
- 46:11or less mirror the West side. It's not at all what I'm looking
- 46:14for here. I also don't think we need
- 46:18stands looking out of the parking lot personally, but you
- 46:21know, this is this is a is not very smart as.
- 46:25A As a avid people watcher, I would like that.
- 46:31Yeah, you can see everybody because we haven't gotten rid of
- 46:34exit re entry yet. So you can see everybody, you
- 46:37know, post gaming the first half in the parking lot out there.
- 46:43I when I was going through this, I was also very surprised at the
- 46:48allocation for I was surprised at the allocation for women's
- 46:53soccer being more than volleyball.
- 46:56When you talk about non revenue. And again, this is not K states
- 47:00allocation. This is just what on average
- 47:03different allocations are across power for based on a handful of
- 47:07different sources. Not cat GPT the allocation.
- 47:12The allocation for women's soccer being higher than women's
- 47:15volleyball doesn't really make sense to me.
- 47:16Volleyball gets a ton of viewers.
- 47:18I couldn't tell you where to find women's soccer matches to
- 47:21save your life. Plus when you're looking at
- 47:24popularity of sports, soccer has become a more popular sport but
- 47:27volleyball is 10 times more popular than women's soccer is,
- 47:31at least at the collegiate level.
- 47:32When you're talking about they're, they're broadcasting
- 47:35games on regular ESPN and ABC for women's volleyball.
- 47:39Maybe not ABC, but ESPN, ESPN2, Fox, Fox Sports 1.
- 47:45So you're getting a lot more eyeballs.
- 47:47It's becoming more of a revenue sport when you look at it in the
- 47:50grand scheme of things. Women's soccer, I don't know
- 47:53who's even good at women's soccer.
- 47:54I can tell you who's good at women's volleyball.
- 47:57You know, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State, without a doubt.
- 48:04So yeah, it's not like women's soccer matches.
- 48:06Again, not to propose the sport. Women's soccer matches are not
- 48:09drawing, you know 80,000 people to attend it like it is in
- 48:13Nebraska. For it's volleyball match.
- 48:16So I think I think it's, well, obviously there's there's
- 48:22different components to that. I I know that you can play
- 48:26soccer in the winter time and it is a, you know, is a false, I
- 48:31guess that's considered a fall sport.
- 48:34Yeah. And you know, but it's
- 48:37predominantly, you know, Southern, Southern states that
- 48:44are playing. I feel like that's where the
- 48:46good soccer teams are at. I feel like the Carolinas, the
- 48:51feel like Carolina's good at soccer.
- 48:55Maybe some Texas schools are good at soccer.
- 48:58You know, I just, I think volleyball is more of a every,
- 49:04every place has women's volleyball.
- 49:07I feel like that's a nationwide women's sport.
- 49:11Yeah, yeah, I agree. I agree.
- 49:13And it can be, yeah. It's it's not weather dependent
- 49:16and all that stuff. There's a lot more.
- 49:20Volleyball's a funny sport because it's it's volleyball
- 49:23right now. I feel like is more similar to
- 49:25how women's basketball was 10-15 years ago where you have kind of
- 49:29that, that tier of 5 to 8 schools that are always in the
- 49:34top five to 8. And then it's, you know, you've
- 49:37got everybody else, but there's more and more parity growing
- 49:39with volleyball. So it's, I feel like it's taking
- 49:41a similar trajectory to women's basketball.
- 49:43It's growing in popularity. I would certainly invest more
- 49:47more energy and effort in, in volleyball, especially if that
- 49:52if that percentage distribution is accurate.
- 49:56This is a fun question. So Penn State this past year
- 50:00they went after the number one guy in in collegiate hockey.
- 50:05Penn State is not a a hockey school.
- 50:08They're not known for hockey. They've not historically been
- 50:10very good. The Big 10 only added hockey is
- 50:13a sponsored sport about 10-10 years ago, I think.
- 50:16So not historically like a huge deal.
- 50:19There are some Big 10 schools that were part of other
- 50:22conferences like Michigan State for instance, Michigan, but Penn
- 50:28State, they went all in on NIL Rep share with Gavin McKenna to
- 50:33go after the number one prospect in hockey and it seems to be
- 50:39paying off for them. They're top ten team in hockey
- 50:41this year as a result of this. Gavin McKenna has been a stud at
- 50:45the collegiate hockey level. So the question is if we had to
- 50:49strategically elevate one non revenue sport for branding or
- 50:53clout to go all in on that thing, maybe go after the top
- 50:58one or two prospects. And and you're just saying we're
- 51:01throwing these percentages out the window.
- 51:04We're taking a couple extra bucks from men's basketball
- 51:06because they're starting fresh with a new coach.
- 51:09We are going to invest this and we're going to go all in on
- 51:13track and field or whatever. What?
- 51:15What would be the sport that you are investing in for branding or
- 51:19cloud purposes? For me, I mean, I would, I think
- 51:26track is the answer because I feel like you can get it and you
- 51:29can get an individual national championship there.
- 51:36We don't have hockey or I, I mean, not hockey if we don't
- 51:40have wrestling or I would go in for wrestling.
- 51:43That's where I would spend, you know, just try to get the two
- 51:48wrestlers in the country and win you a national championship at
- 51:52140 lbs and 126 lbs, something crazy like that.
- 51:57And because those guys, I know it, maybe it's rare.
- 52:02Maybe I'm just not involved in the wrestling community as well
- 52:07as I should be, but it feels like they're just comes along
- 52:11where these guys are constantly. I'm a four time All American in
- 52:15wrestling. Like these guys are dominating
- 52:18from their freshman season and they stay.
- 52:21They all stay. Obviously, there's really no
- 52:23professional wrestling to get involved in, but these guys and
- 52:31their faces of programs, like you might not know them, but I
- 52:35mean in the wrestling community, they are big, big deal.
- 52:38And it's in this air in Kansas area, the Midwestern general,
- 52:44that is a big, big deal wrestling.
- 52:47If we had wrestling, that's where I would go, but I would go
- 52:49track as well. I think track, I love that we
- 52:52kind of have this like we are the school we're we're high jump
- 53:00university. I like, I love that shit.
- 53:04I wish we could. I mean, if we if we get the
- 53:06number one high jumper out of high school every year for the
- 53:09next like 10 years, give me that, Give me, send me, give me
- 53:15when we had what was his name? Man went to the Olympics.
- 53:19He won silver at the Olympics. Eric Canard.
- 53:22Canard I mean, I love that, that, I mean, track is such a
- 53:27Olympic sport that if you get the best guy and then he can
- 53:30make his way onto a grand stage like the Olympics, I think
- 53:36that's worth it. I saw Eric Canard on campus a
- 53:39few times. We overlapped as, as students
- 53:41and that's that's pretty cool to, to think about.
- 53:43And I feel like, you know, obviously with football and and
- 53:46basketball right now, a lot of these student athletes aren't
- 53:49necessarily going to, to class on campus, but track and field,
- 53:53like we had a track and field athlete in, in my fraternity.
- 53:56Like you see these guys on campus, these guys and gals on
- 53:59campus pretty frequently. Like they are, they're a big
- 54:02team. There's a lot of people on it.
- 54:04Like they you run into track athletes and interact with them
- 54:07probably more than you do any other, any other athletic or I
- 54:13guess sponsored, sponsored sport on campus.
- 54:15So it's, it's interesting. I would probably go I would
- 54:21probably go baseball. I would probably go baseball
- 54:23because I feel like if you. If you put.
- 54:27If you put all your eggs in one basket and you get the top
- 54:30pitching prospect or the top, you know, it could be an
- 54:34outfielder. That's just, I mean, the dude is
- 54:36the dude's just ripping jacks. He's got like a 700 slugging for
- 54:40whatever. Like just doing insane stuff at
- 54:43the high school level or the club level.
- 54:47The Collegiate Baseball, you have to be there for two years,
- 54:51right? Before, I believe so.
- 54:53I believe so, yeah. The the rules are weird.
- 54:56They're weird. They're different.
- 55:00Because I know when you declare out of high school, yeah, yeah,
- 55:03you could declare straight out of high school.
- 55:05And then I think you can go, even if you declare, you can go
- 55:09to college, you have to be there for, I don't know if it's two or
- 55:12three years, I'm not sure. But I think baseball is a really
- 55:15good pick. I mean, like you said, you can
- 55:17make that if you've got the number one prospect out of high
- 55:21school and he was teetering on being a first round pick or a
- 55:25top like 15 pick in baseball. Those guys go to college a lot.
- 55:30And yeah, if you can find a way to get him, you know, $2,000,000
- 55:35for the next, like every year for the next two years, Why not?
- 55:40Why not let it fly, baby? And and here's the deal.
- 55:44You look at some of the programs in baseball who have won
- 55:47national championships or been to the College World Series.
- 55:51You've got Wichita State has a national championship in
- 55:54baseball from 1989. You've got, what was it, Coastal
- 55:58Carolina that won a couple of years back?
- 56:00I mean, you've got smaller, yeah, you've got smaller
- 56:04programs. Yeah, I mean, I remember when
- 56:07when I was in high school, it was like Long Beach Poly, like.
- 56:11Long Beach State, but. Yeah.
- 56:13I mean those those schools. Cal State Fullerton, Cal.
- 56:16State Fullerton that those schools rocked at baseball.
- 56:20You see Irvine. You see, Irvine made a.
- 56:23Couple different era. It's a different era, but you
- 56:26know, ice I can. That's a quick way to get a
- 56:30naddy. And it would be in it would be
- 56:33in those in that top three of, you know, revenue sports which
- 56:38that everybody keeps dogging on us on, including Missouri fans.
- 56:41And the only national title they have is in baseball.
- 56:43So congratulations to them for being able to celebrate
- 56:47something that happened in 1950. Yeah, I I saw that.
- 56:53What was the final? What was the final score?
- 56:556563 Oh my God I feel like we were up like 12 at one point and
- 57:02then blew it. Well, going to have to, yeah,
- 57:05going to have to find the recap on that one.
- 57:08Only a couple more questions. So you have to choose one Final
- 57:14Four or one College Football Playoff appearance.
- 57:17And this is just an appearance in the CFP.
- 57:20We're not talking about a deep run necessarily.
- 57:22This is just you. You make it into the 12 team
- 57:25field. Which one do you choose and why
- 57:28and how? How equally or unequally do you
- 57:31view those two things? Because when you look at the
- 57:33revenue payout, because all that gets distributed to the
- 57:36conference and each individual member equally in the Big 12,
- 57:40you're really diluting that $8 million of Big 12 payout to like
- 57:45half a million per school. Which when you get into like the
- 57:49Final four appearance on average, you know, Big 12
- 57:52schools are making relatively deep runs pretty much every
- 57:55year. But based on the unit's, it all
- 57:57kind of ends up equaling out. So the revenue wise, it doesn't
- 58:00make a huge difference. It might be a couple $100
- 58:03hundred, $1000 difference, but it's not a drastic difference in
- 58:06the grand scheme of things. OK, Can I, can I get some like
- 58:11oddly specific things just for a Kansas State perspective?
- 58:16Is this are are we at home for that Kansas State playoff,
- 58:20College Football Playoff? Why not?
- 58:23I think that I think that makes a huge difference.
- 58:27I think a Final Four is like, OK, Final 4 is probably the
- 58:34leader in the clubhouse, but I think if you get a home game and
- 58:37you're not guaranteeing me that we lose.
- 58:40And it's not just for sure, one game in the College Football
- 58:43Playoff and I get a home game at College Football Playoff and a
- 58:47chance to win and go on to the next rounds.
- 58:51I'm going to take probably football.
- 58:55Being a College Football Playoff winner is a really big deal.
- 59:00Now you're down to the final eight.
- 59:02I think that is that's crazy. I think that it that's really,
- 59:06that's really good for the program.
- 59:08That's really good for the university.
- 59:10I know about the I don't know anything about the revenue like
- 59:13you were talking about how who gets what, how much is
- 59:16distributed. But I think just from a
- 59:18branding, winning the College Football Playoff game at home is
- 59:23monstrous. That would be that would be
- 59:25awesome. A final 4, though.
- 59:28It's really, really, really cool.
- 59:31It's really cool. I think it needs to be somewhere
- 59:33other than Indianapolis. Yuck.
- 59:36I don't yeah. I hate when it's in Indy.
- 59:39That's. What if the Final Four is in the
- 59:41brand new Arrowhead Stadium in the Legends in Kansas City?
- 59:45That's pretty. Sweet.
- 59:48Is that big enough though? Is that big?
- 59:50Enough. It will.
- 59:50Yeah. Yeah, it will be, of course.
- 59:54That's an indoor facility. It's going to have a Dome.
- 59:59The Chief Stadium is going to have a Dome.
- 1:00:01It's going to have a Dome. Where have you been?
- 1:00:04I have no idea 300 the. 300 page long K state online the red.
- 1:00:10On I have not looked at that one.
- 1:00:13So OK, man, that would be that would be monstrous.
- 1:00:18That would be awesome. So I'm, I'm really waffling
- 1:00:22here, but I'm going to go, I'm going to go College Football
- 1:00:27Playoff, OK, with a chance to win at a, with a, with a home
- 1:00:31game. Yeah, give me that.
- 1:00:33Give me that. Yeah, the.
- 1:00:36Problem with that is I hope you've won four games in the
- 1:00:40NCAA tournament, which is so fun.
- 1:00:42Dude, that is so, so fun. Just from those Elite Eight
- 1:00:47runs. I mean, you, those are so
- 1:00:50magical. It is literally called March
- 1:00:52Mad. The magic of the the tournament
- 1:00:55is real. That is, it's it's awesome.
- 1:00:58It is. I'm going to go call football
- 1:01:00player. OK, yeah, I, I struggle with
- 1:01:02this one. I, I have a hard time making
- 1:01:04this decision because I, I feel like the Final Four has a lot
- 1:01:09more nostalgia because it's, it's been around my entire life.
- 1:01:12I've watched Final Fours as long as I can remember watching
- 1:01:16basketball, CFP, you know, it's this new shiny objects.
- 1:01:20So that's kind of fun. That's kind of cool.
- 1:01:22But it doesn't have as much of that allure as the Final Four
- 1:01:26does for me. So I feel like my my heart is
- 1:01:29telling me the Final Four, but my brain is telling me the CFP,
- 1:01:33if that makes any sense. Yeah, I feel like the CFP would
- 1:01:37do more for K State in general, as a community, as a brand, as a
- 1:01:42program, from a football perspective.
- 1:01:44But. But think of the banner that's
- 1:01:47in Bramlich now. That's that's true.
- 1:01:50You don't get no banners for College Football Playoff
- 1:01:52appearances. No, and you don't get you don't
- 1:01:55get logos, you don't get logos for Elite Eights, right, That's
- 1:02:01true. So so the, the CFP though, I
- 1:02:04feel like it's funny because we would have made so many of these
- 1:02:09CFPS in the past had they had a 12 team playoff.
- 1:02:12So it is kind of funny. I mean, we would have we would
- 1:02:15have had multiple. I mean 2014 you would have
- 1:02:17appeared. 2012 you would have appeared, you know. 2011 you you
- 1:02:22would have had a shot to appear because we made the Cotton Bowl
- 1:02:25that year. 20119822 So there's a few years O3 you would have had
- 1:02:34an opportunity to make the CFPA number of times.
- 1:02:38So it is kind of funny to think about it in retrospect.
- 1:02:40So you know, do you hold some of those New Year's 6 bowls from
- 1:02:44the past at 2000 the Cotton Bowl against Tennessee?
- 1:02:48Do you, do you hold some of those in a similar regard as you
- 1:02:51do to the Final four if you're putting those in a similar?
- 1:02:55I don't know. I don't know if I think, I don't
- 1:02:57know now that you say it like that.
- 1:03:00I don't think now if you had it, because now you're having to
- 1:03:03have those teams play more games.
- 1:03:06And I think the the allure of those those teams, well, some of
- 1:03:12them is that they went out on top like they were they were
- 1:03:15really, really good teams and they they made that that game
- 1:03:18and that was their final game. And then they didn't have
- 1:03:20another game where they were also a Sugar Bowl team and all
- 1:03:25that stuff. I think there's the nostalgia of
- 1:03:28like back in the day when you had one game and that was it.
- 1:03:31That was your final game. I think there was something to
- 1:03:34that. The Final Four, man, that is.
- 1:03:37I don't know. I think I'm going to go College
- 1:03:39Football Playoff, like you said, with my brain.
- 1:03:41I'm going College Football Playoff.
- 1:03:43In my heart. It does scream like, man, you
- 1:03:46want to be a Final Four team in basketball.
- 1:03:48You're playing really good basketball and you've probably
- 1:03:52had to beat some really good teams, maybe potentially.
- 1:03:55Yeah. Oh, for sure.
- 1:03:58So I'm going to I'm going to skip.
- 1:04:01I'm going to skip. Come with the the last two
- 1:04:03questions. These are a well, I don't know,
- 1:04:06they're kind of fun. We're already over.
- 1:04:07I'm not I'm not planning on going anywhere.
- 1:04:10Coaching decision. So you're AD for a day.
- 1:04:12You have to fire one head coach not named Matthew Driscoll.
- 1:04:16You have to there's no option not to.
- 1:04:18Who are you going to fire and why?
- 1:04:21This could be across any any sport.
- 1:04:23And I'm I could tell you my answer if you're.
- 1:04:25Not hold on. So it's not just a basketball
- 1:04:28thing any. Coach, but you have to.
- 1:04:32You have to fire 1 coach. It could be an assistant.
- 1:04:36I'm no one head coach one. OK.
- 1:04:43I mean, women's volleyball guy Mole, was it mole?
- 1:04:52Mansfield, Jason Mansfield. Yeah, I like.
- 1:04:55Get him out of here. I'm not firing Pete Hughes.
- 1:04:57I'm not doing it. I'm not.
- 1:04:59Either I OK. Jordan Smith has been the
- 1:05:02women's tennis coach since 2018. The man is 65 and 87 overall and
- 1:05:11he's 15 and 47 in Big 12 play. How is he?
- 1:05:16How is he still the coach is my first question.
- 1:05:19And secondly, I just, I've never again, I've never really paid
- 1:05:24attention to women's tennis again.
- 1:05:25It's not a knock on the athletes who are probably doing their
- 1:05:28best to represent the university, but I was a coach
- 1:05:32that is that bad in Big 12 place, still coaching.
- 1:05:36I don't know that's. Eight seasons in.
- 1:05:39Is he an old man? No, he's like a relatively
- 1:05:43young, like kind of attractive looking man like I.
- 1:05:49Don't know. That's so funny.
- 1:05:50I don't know it. Looks like he's 40.
- 1:05:51Maybe at the at the at the. Wow.
- 1:05:53I mean, I didn't know that our tennis program was in shambles
- 1:05:56like this. I just yeah, get him out of
- 1:06:00here, dude. Get him the hell out of here.
- 1:06:03What's his name? Jordan Smith, which is a very
- 1:06:08generic name. Wait, I have two last names
- 1:06:12buddy. OK.
- 1:06:15My last question, you get to add 1 men's and one women's sport,
- 1:06:19which we don't have. I think I already know your
- 1:06:21answer on this. Yeah, I'm going.
- 1:06:22I'm going wrestling, going wrestling.
- 1:06:26I love a good wrestling and women's sports.
- 1:06:32Give me, give me field hockey. Oh.
- 1:06:36OK, I'm almost tempted to go lacrosse in men's, but I'm going
- 1:06:42to go wrestling. I think a Gray, a Gray singlet,
- 1:06:48maybe even a, you know, a lavender singlet.
- 1:06:51Absolute nasty work. Give me that.
- 1:06:56You get some, you know, 200 and £45 giant Kansas bread freak in
- 1:07:04the heavyweight division painting somebody in the
- 1:07:06lavender singlet. Can't get much better than that.
- 1:07:10And then women's field hockey. I love their little masks that
- 1:07:12they wear. Real fun sport to watch.
- 1:07:18Real athletic freaks there too. They get going, they get to
- 1:07:21moving and it's a violent, I thought it was a lot less
- 1:07:24violent than it is, but they they're physical.
- 1:07:27So yeah, give me, give me women's field hockey.
- 1:07:29So I, you all know my answer to this is going to be men's, It's
- 1:07:33going to be men's and women's ice hockey.
- 1:07:35Shout out USA double gold golden goals in both games.
- 1:07:41Love the Winter Olympics, love, love hockey.
- 1:07:44And my reason for this is I feel like you have to have both men's
- 1:07:47and women's hockey in order to justify building a facility for
- 1:07:50that. If it's going to be just men's.
- 1:07:54I, I feel like they, they wouldn't necessarily want to, to
- 1:07:58build a facility for it. But with the excitement around
- 1:08:02hockey, I feel like you can capitalize on some of the
- 1:08:05momentum that, that the NHL has, has been able to capitalize on
- 1:08:08with the Olympics in the Four Nations and, and all that stuff.
- 1:08:11And when you look at strategically, when you look at
- 1:08:14Division One men's and women's ice hockey, they're really only
- 1:08:17about 63 or 64 teams across all of Division One.
- 1:08:22So kind of similar to what you're what you're talking about
- 1:08:24with wrestling. There's a little bit of a power
- 1:08:27vacuum. There's not really a program in
- 1:08:29the state of Kansas, in the state of Oklahoma.
- 1:08:32Nebraska has the University of of Nebraska Omaha has a program
- 1:08:36there in the NCHC, but they're not traditional conferences
- 1:08:40necessarily. The Big 10's really the only
- 1:08:41one. But you got like hockey E you've
- 1:08:44got the NCHTDU is a powerhouse they.
- 1:08:48Want to think more? National titles than than any
- 1:08:51other program. And Michigan, I think is right
- 1:08:54on their heels. Michigan's right behind them or
- 1:08:56Minnesota Duluth. But it's not traditional
- 1:08:58powerhouses. It's all these kind of random.
- 1:09:01Geographically, it makes sense that they have hockey types of
- 1:09:04teams. And then you get Arizona State
- 1:09:06in the mix. Arizona State has been elevated.
- 1:09:09They're now in the NCHC, so they're playing in the same
- 1:09:11conference as the University of Denver, University of North
- 1:09:15Dakota, Western Michigan, just powerhouse programs that have
- 1:09:19won most of the recent national titles in hockey.
- 1:09:22So it's possible. And the path to get there is the
- 1:09:26same path that Oklahoma State's starting to take where they've
- 1:09:29got a team that's in this, you know, Division 2 of collegiate
- 1:09:32club hockey. They, they, you know, Arizona
- 1:09:36State took the same path. And I think 3 or 4 years ago,
- 1:09:39they elevated themselves up to the NCHC level.
- 1:09:42But it's just, it's, I feel like there's a lot of opportunity for
- 1:09:45you to build up a program, build up a fan base with the way K
- 1:09:48State fans are embracing a lot of these different types of
- 1:09:53sports. When, when they're really good,
- 1:09:55you don't even have to be good at hockey.
- 1:09:56It's just fun to watch. It's fun to participate in, it's
- 1:09:58fun to watch. I would be all in on men's and
- 1:10:02women's ice hockey and I feel like it could be, it could be a
- 1:10:05really good opportunity for us to do something other than what
- 1:10:08they're doing with Ahern, to go in and and renovate that, turn
- 1:10:12that into an ice hockey arena. Let's do it.
- 1:10:14Why not, hey? I'm all with you.
- 1:10:17I mean, you sold me. I mean, it's better than me just
- 1:10:19talking about guys and lavender singlets.
- 1:10:22So yeah, give me, give me ice hockey.
- 1:10:24I'll watch. I'll be all over that.
- 1:10:30And my, my last question, you get to be AD for a day, Anthony
- 1:10:34Davis, are you shaving the unibrow or keeping it?
- 1:10:40I think he's so secure with his unibrow.
- 1:10:42I mean, it's it's, it's a brand moniker for him.
- 1:10:45I think he has to keep it. I mean, I'm not shaving it.
- 1:10:49I mean, I'm worried about like keeping my feet healthy, my
- 1:10:53ankles secure. I'm worried about that.
- 1:10:56I'm not really worried about facial hair at that point.
- 1:10:58So, yeah, you're going to lose out on millions and millions of
- 1:11:02dollars if you don't take care of your ankles, brother.
- 1:11:04Come on. I'm shaving, it looks awful.
- 1:11:09And he's a wizard now. I mean, his career might be
- 1:11:14over. Might as well shave.
- 1:11:16If longer can shave his unibrow AD can shave his.
- 1:11:20I'm going to end it with that quick shout out also to AJ's
- 1:11:23head and shoulders bottle on Twitter.
- 1:11:25He wanted a shout out at AJ's secret sauce.
