- 0:00This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:04Podcast.
- 0:05And I'm thrilled to say that we're joined
- 0:07by two leaders in the staffing business.
- 0:11We're joined today by Steven and Sterling
- 0:14Carter, and they're gonna tell us about a
- 0:15book they just wrote,
- 0:17about their business, what they do, trends that
- 0:19they're watching, and a lot more.
- 0:21Steven or Sterling, let me ask each of
- 0:23you to introduce yourself first. Sterling, why don't
- 0:25we start with you and then go to
- 0:26Steven?
- 0:28Sure. Thank you, Scott. And it's a pleasure
- 0:30to be here. I'm Sterling Carter,
- 0:33and I am the co,
- 0:35CEO
- 0:36of Carter Brothers Consulting. We have a consulting
- 0:39firm. So I'm I'm a health care guru.
- 0:42I have a doctorate in physical therapy. I've
- 0:44been practicing in health care
- 0:46for about thirty years.
- 0:48Thank you so much. And and, Steven, let
- 0:50me ask you to introduce yourself.
- 0:52Sure. Sure. Stephen Levi Carter and,
- 0:56as Sterling mentioned,
- 0:58co CEO of Carter Howe, Carter Brothers Consulting.
- 1:01And,
- 1:02we're both operating in the health care space,
- 1:04serial serial entrepreneurs in the health care space.
- 1:08My background,
- 1:09is accounting,
- 1:10project management,
- 1:12ERP implementations.
- 1:14But I moved out of kinda oil and
- 1:16gas into health care
- 1:18many years ago and and have been, in
- 1:20this space for quite some time and excited
- 1:22to share our wisdom and
- 1:24ideas and thoughts, with with the Becker team.
- 1:28Well well, thank you so much. And and
- 1:30and tell us, why don't you take you
- 1:32guys both co wrote a book recently. I
- 1:34was honored to write the Ford for it.
- 1:36Tell us a little bit about the book
- 1:38and and what what led you? What motivated
- 1:40you to write the book?
- 1:41Steven or Sterling, why don't you take the
- 1:43lead there?
- 1:44I guess it it started with
- 1:46us going into business. We're twin brothers, and,
- 1:50it was kind of a great combination. One,
- 1:52we know each other, of course, really, really
- 1:54well. We can trust each other. So going
- 1:56into business together is great.
- 1:59Steven has has as you you could
- 2:02hear, he is a great,
- 2:04business acumen, has done a lot of great
- 2:06things in business management
- 2:08and growth is his his expertise.
- 2:11My expertise is is on the health care
- 2:14clinical side.
- 2:16We came together
- 2:17back in 02/2007,
- 2:202008,
- 2:21start up a physical therapy
- 2:23outpatient clinic.
- 2:25Well, actually, I guess I started started it,
- 2:27but then I quickly brought Steven in as
- 2:29my consultant,
- 2:31advisor and that kind of thing. And then
- 2:33and then in 2011,
- 2:35we started to team up and open up
- 2:37a health care staffing company called Sterling Staffing
- 2:41Solutions.
- 2:42So since then, we've we've grown the physical
- 2:44therapy,
- 2:46practice. We've grown the health care staffing
- 2:49company.
- 2:50Steven opened up a a company and and
- 2:52hospice. So we have an at home hospice
- 2:55agency.
- 2:56We started doing consulting and and wrote our
- 2:58first book
- 2:59called the, w success,
- 3:01the principles to build a multimillion dollar business.
- 3:05And then we decided that it may be
- 3:07great for us to go specifically into the
- 3:09niche of health care
- 3:11and really helping
- 3:12health care executives and health care providers
- 3:15to kinda figure out how to create their
- 3:17own,
- 3:18lane and become
- 3:20entrepreneurs in the health care space.
- 3:23Thank you. And, Steven, let me ask you
- 3:25to follow-up on that. And and give us
- 3:27the title of the book too as well
- 3:28just in case people don't hear it clearly.
- 3:30Give us where they can buy it in
- 3:32the title of the book.
- 3:33Sure. The the new book is the business
- 3:35of healing,
- 3:36and, it will be available on Amazon,
- 3:39and in all of the online,
- 3:42large book distribution,
- 3:44venues
- 3:45and,
- 3:46definitely will be available on our website,
- 3:49at thebusinessofhealing.com.
- 3:52And talk for a second, Steven. You guys
- 3:55are both
- 3:56brothers.
- 3:57Do you guys get along well? How does
- 3:59that work in practice of business? You've been
- 4:01in business together for it seems like ten
- 4:03years plus. Is there ever a a a
- 4:05a huge
- 4:06fight or cage match or anything between the
- 4:09brothers? Do you guys get along every day
- 4:11pretty well?
- 4:12Well, when when we were young, we definitely
- 4:15had a few run ins
- 4:17around
- 4:18the around the,
- 4:20the the the classroom and,
- 4:22cafeteria at the schoolhouse. But
- 4:25here here recently,
- 4:27we've learned to stay in our lanes, and
- 4:29we respect,
- 4:31the value that each of each of us
- 4:32brings. And so,
- 4:34we know when,
- 4:36to allow the other to take the lead
- 4:38on certain aspects. We would know when to
- 4:41collaborate to get the, you know, kind of,
- 4:43you know, both minds combined to brainstorm on
- 4:47different ideas. And so it's really a a
- 4:49very cohesive
- 4:51and smooth process.
- 4:53You know, we've been we've been in business
- 4:54now, Sterling was since 2011. Right? So fifteen
- 4:58years,
- 5:00which is interesting because,
- 5:01you know, doing being in business
- 5:04with your, your family member is definitely not
- 5:06the same as being family. Right? Not not
- 5:09the same as the as the relationship we
- 5:11would have as just being brothers.
- 5:14Being in business is definitely a a a
- 5:16little bit of more of a challenge. We
- 5:17often,
- 5:18speak of it as as as being married.
- 5:21Right? Being business partners is is,
- 5:23is basically the equivalent of being married to
- 5:26another person, and so you have to learn
- 5:28how to respect them and,
- 5:30you know, again, stay in the stay in
- 5:31your lane and and, make sure that,
- 5:34you move as a team
- 5:36and, don't step on these hills.
- 5:38I I'm gonna ask you each the following
- 5:40question
- 5:41and and,
- 5:43do your best to answer this
- 5:45and and behave as well as you can.
- 5:47Steven,
- 5:48what does Sterling do really well? And then
- 5:51Sterling, I'm gonna ask you the same question
- 5:53about Steven. What does he do really well?
- 5:55What are you most proud of when you
- 5:56think about your brother's skill set? And, because
- 5:59you just went Steven, I'll ask you or
- 6:01or Steven, I'll ask you to kick that
- 6:03off and to continue. And then Sterling, I'm
- 6:05gonna ask you the same question. What what
- 6:07does Steve do really well?
- 6:09So Sterling is I mean, there's an a
- 6:12a number of things that he does really
- 6:14well, and and I don't say that just
- 6:16to be nice, but he really is an
- 6:17exceptional guy.
- 6:19But he is really a big picture thinker,
- 6:22a visionary.
- 6:23And so what he excels at at really
- 6:25well is being able to see,
- 6:28the forest, you know, versus the trees, if
- 6:30you will. And that's a really strong,
- 6:34you know,
- 6:35aspect or,
- 6:37characteristic to have, especially in leadership. You know,
- 6:40as we're growing and and, you know, moving
- 6:43businesses to the next level,
- 6:45I'm kind of more of a implementer, you
- 6:47know? And, and so sometimes
- 6:49head down really focused,
- 6:52but don't see kind of the, where we're
- 6:54going to as well. And Sterling is a,
- 6:56is, does a great job of being a
- 6:58visionary and being able to we're both military
- 7:01guys. He's a he's an officer in the
- 7:03military, retired officer in the military. I was
- 7:05enlisted.
- 7:06But that military
- 7:07mindset of being able to,
- 7:10focus on, you know, the priorities, first things
- 7:13first, is what he does really well.
- 7:15I I I love that. Sterling, that was
- 7:17incredibly gracious by your brother, Steve. You know,
- 7:19a lot of brothers will go after each
- 7:21other and and sort of like, you know,
- 7:23the, you know, it gives sort of half
- 7:25ass compliment and and positive comp but he
- 7:27gave a truly graceful and sincere one.
- 7:30Do us a favor and do the same
- 7:32for your brother. What what does Steven do
- 7:34really well? Well, first, I did text him
- 7:37while we were on the call or on
- 7:38on the podcast and and told him I
- 7:40would give him a cash amount of undisclosed
- 7:43amount that that I think he gave, some
- 7:46positive things about me. No. Stephen is is,
- 7:49amazing.
- 7:50He's, he's a great leader,
- 7:53a
- 7:54he's he talked about a a great implementer
- 7:57because
- 7:58which is true, he has great work ethic,
- 8:00and he has the ability to get things
- 8:03done.
- 8:04And and it's it's
- 8:06pretty amazing. Like, he's he's,
- 8:09it's almost like there's five of them. He
- 8:11said, I'm not his twin. He's got, you
- 8:13know,
- 8:15quadruplets or something, quintuplets running around here. But
- 8:18really, really hard worker,
- 8:20great with
- 8:21operations,
- 8:23really, really good with the business side of
- 8:25things. So understanding the numbers,
- 8:28understanding what it takes in order to make
- 8:30a business profitable
- 8:31and sustain profitability,
- 8:34really able to see what's what are the
- 8:37important things that we need to do and
- 8:39what are the things what's where's the waste?
- 8:41And so that's really, really important when you're
- 8:43talking about, a successful business and running a
- 8:46successful business because that aspect,
- 8:49if it's missing,
- 8:51it can be detrimental to businesses.
- 8:53And so I can't even tell you. If
- 8:55you would ask my two sisters to say
- 8:57something good about me,
- 8:59that they might have just fumbled the question.
- 9:00They might not have answered, but this is
- 9:02really impressive and really nice. Sterling, let me
- 9:05start with you on this question. What are
- 9:07you most focused on and excited about this
- 9:09year? Where are you most focused and excited
- 9:11as we get sort of the 2026?
- 9:13You know, what what gets you going?
- 9:16So I'm excited. I I think that we,
- 9:18you know, we we mentioned earlier that we
- 9:20have a lot of different businesses. I think
- 9:22all of the the businesses are are running
- 9:25well. The engines are running high, and and
- 9:28we're we're in a a scale or growth
- 9:31mode. So
- 9:32excited about the acquisitions that we're that we
- 9:35have in place.
- 9:36We're opening new offices. We've opened up, I
- 9:39believe, two two new offices for the hospice
- 9:41agency and
- 9:42one in Oklahoma City, one in San Antonio,
- 9:45where we've opened up two,
- 9:47new clinics for the, physical therapy or they
- 9:50will open they're opening in the next month.
- 9:53And then and we're also looking at an
- 9:55acquisition
- 9:56for the staffing company. So it's just really
- 9:59kind of we're just trying to hold on
- 10:00and and manage all of the you know,
- 10:02keep all the balls up in the air
- 10:03and all that kind of good stuff. But
- 10:05we're looking forward to the to the scaling
- 10:07and the growth mode
- 10:08of the businesses.
- 10:10Literally
- 10:11fantastic.
- 10:12And, Steve, give us your thoughts. What are
- 10:14you most focused on and excited about for
- 10:16the rest of this year?
- 10:17Yeah. I think I think Sterling's,
- 10:20he he touched on a few a few
- 10:22of those. We we really are you know,
- 10:23you spend a lot of time,
- 10:25in business building the foundation. Right? And so,
- 10:29you're building the fifth foundation, making sure that
- 10:31you have the right team, the right processes,
- 10:34in place. And and, you know, that takes
- 10:36some time. And then finally, you know, as
- 10:38you're doing this process, finally,
- 10:40the light bulb goes up, things just start
- 10:43you know, those gears start moving, they're oiling
- 10:45things are oiled and moving,
- 10:47like a well oiled machine, and and they
- 10:49just start to rock and roll. And we're
- 10:51at that point where a lot of the,
- 10:54the the hard work and the foundational steps
- 10:57that we put in place, some years ago
- 10:59are starting to really implement and and take
- 11:02take shape.
- 11:03And so as as Sterling mentioned, we're in
- 11:05growth mode,
- 11:06and things look great. I mean, right now,
- 11:09there there's been a lot of talk about
- 11:11what's happening in terms of baby boomers that
- 11:14are shifting away from businesses that they've built
- 11:17and,
- 11:18created for, you know, many, many years. They're
- 11:20looking to retire.
- 11:22Maybe their their kids are not interested in
- 11:24the business. And so there are opportunities to
- 11:26to take on,
- 11:28acquisitions, acquire businesses that that are prime and
- 11:31ready to get tickets to the next level,
- 11:32but just needs another a new source of
- 11:34energy. So we're looking at those kind of
- 11:37things and, you know, continuing to grow. So
- 11:39it it feels good to be in a
- 11:41place that we're in right now.
- 11:43And talk about that for a second because
- 11:45they talk about this literal almost tsunami
- 11:48of people
- 11:49that founded businesses
- 11:51that are now baby boomers to later baby
- 11:53boomers, starting to try and turn those over
- 11:55and figuring that out. Are you seeing a
- 11:57lot of that?
- 11:59Definitely. Definitely seeing a lot of that. And,
- 12:02it's it's an opportunity. I I don't wanna
- 12:04say to get a business pennies on the
- 12:07dollar. That probably is not as you know,
- 12:09probably not that cheap, but it's definitely an
- 12:11opportunity,
- 12:12to take on a business from someone who's
- 12:14just ready to give up the reins.
- 12:16And, if you're, if you're kind of a
- 12:19mechanical engineering kind of person that likes to
- 12:22open up the head and deep dive in
- 12:24there and see what's, what needs to be
- 12:26improved, can we change out the the carburetor
- 12:29or what have you and and and add
- 12:31some more horsepower to this engine? It's really
- 12:34exciting.
- 12:35Sterling, what do you what do you think
- 12:36about that that point? Yeah. No. I I
- 12:39agree. It's it's really exciting. One of our
- 12:41our biggest issues is not the opportunities with
- 12:44making sure that we we can find the
- 12:45right people and put them in place. Luckily,
- 12:47we, we've we have a staffing company that
- 12:50really helps with with being able to to
- 12:53place people. But there's a huge demand,
- 12:56for opening up new businesses, acquiring new businesses.
- 13:00It's just really
- 13:02a matter of making sure you have the
- 13:03right people to run them.
- 13:05So Oh, completely. And and talk for a
- 13:07second, Sterling.
- 13:08Any advice that you would give to emerging
- 13:10op entrepreneurs,
- 13:12emerging leaders, couple thoughts that you'd give to
- 13:14them?
- 13:15So I I would I would say that
- 13:17there's two things that really help to catapult
- 13:20your business.
- 13:21One is operations. So being able to have
- 13:23a say, if you're just starting off, really
- 13:25start writing down every single thing that you
- 13:27do.
- 13:28Because eventually, you're gonna have to train someone
- 13:31to do those things because you can't do
- 13:33it all forever. There's no way you're gonna
- 13:35be able to script to to scale that
- 13:37way. So making sure you have a great
- 13:39SOP,
- 13:41manual, great operations.
- 13:43When we say look at your your company
- 13:45as if it's a franchise, just like you're
- 13:47a Chick fil A, etcetera? How can you
- 13:49set up a system in place where it's
- 13:51turnkey, where it doesn't matter where you go,
- 13:54you're gonna get the same amount of same
- 13:56quality, the same customer service, the same experience.
- 14:00And then the second thing is is people.
- 14:02And so you have to be for forward
- 14:05thinking
- 14:05and looking
- 14:06for those right people even before you need
- 14:09them,
- 14:10because it's it really takes a hard it
- 14:12it takes a long time to find the
- 14:14right people.
- 14:15And so
- 14:16that's a really important part of your your,
- 14:19process. At least
- 14:20at this point, we'll maybe AI in a
- 14:22few years is gonna take that to the
- 14:25end away. But, you know, I still think
- 14:27we need need good people to,
- 14:29to to lead and and to delegate task
- 14:32appropriately.
- 14:33I I think that's so well stated. Steven,
- 14:36your thoughts. Any advice that you would give
- 14:38to emerging entrepreneurs, emerging founders?
- 14:40Yeah. So so certainly alluded to it. I
- 14:42I was gonna mention AI. That's the first
- 14:44thing that popped into my mind and and
- 14:47the ability to leverage AI. Not look at
- 14:49it as a negative or something that's so
- 14:52scary and that, you know, try to fight
- 14:54the wave, if you will. Embrace it, embrace
- 14:57it, learn as much as you can and
- 14:59try to figure out how to utilize,
- 15:02that that process to make you better. I
- 15:05mean, we we sir and I are constantly
- 15:07thinking about the things that we can delegate.
- 15:09Anything that we can delegate and get off
- 15:11of our plate so that we can, elevate
- 15:14and, take you know, make sure we're take
- 15:16spend spending our time and energy
- 15:18on things that truly impact revenue. And the
- 15:21the exercise that you used to think about
- 15:23when you think about delegation
- 15:25used to be about who can who can
- 15:26I give this to? Now it's really what
- 15:29AI tool can I give this to to
- 15:31take on these tasks,
- 15:33so that I don't have to do those?
- 15:35We're we're utilizing a lot of overseas personnel
- 15:38as well. I mean, obviously,
- 15:39depending upon your space, if you're in a,
- 15:43you know, service business or a product business,
- 15:45that may be a little bit more difficult,
- 15:47but definitely in a service business aspect,
- 15:49we're utilizing
- 15:51outsourcing, pushing out things,
- 15:53overseas to our, to our, our overseas brothers
- 15:56and sisters that are very appreciative of the
- 15:59opportunities that that we can give them and
- 16:02and do a great job. I mean,
- 16:04after COVID, things that we thought had to
- 16:06be a a face to face person sitting
- 16:08in office to do, we learned really quickly
- 16:10that that can be done over Zoom. It
- 16:12can be done online. It can be done,
- 16:15electronically, remotely. And so we we fast forwarded
- 16:18that whole concept,
- 16:19and, our goal is to try to make
- 16:22this as remote, as automated,
- 16:24and as, as virtual as possible.
- 16:28Thank you both for joining us today. Stephen
- 16:30Carter, Sterling Carter, remarkable leaders.
- 16:33Tell us again, Stephen or Sterling, the name
- 16:35of the book so people can buy the
- 16:37book, but just fantastic what you both accomplished.
- 16:40Thank you so much for joining us today.
- 16:41Steven or Sterling, the name of the book
- 16:43again.
- 16:44Sure. The name of the book is, The
- 16:46Business of Healing,
- 16:48and you can find that book on Amazon,
- 16:51on Barnes and Nobles.
- 16:53There's several different book book online bookstores that
- 16:56have it available or at least available presale,
- 17:00because it will officially launch in September,
- 17:03but also the bill at thebusinessofhealing.com.
- 17:06You can also preorder there as well.
- 17:09Thank you both so much for joining us
- 17:11today on the Becker's Healthcare podcast. What a
- 17:13pleasure. Steven Strohring, thank you so much.
- 17:16You're welcome. We appreciate it. You, Scott. Great
- 17:19time.
