- 1:43Speaker 7: Kevin Grappley filling in for Chip Howard today. This is
- 1:49Speaker 7: the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition. As we do every Thursday
- 1:53Speaker 7: at five o'clock here on Sports Talk, Chip sat down
- 1:58Speaker 7: with Scott Siegel. They talked about the upcoming CCA banquet.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Here's Chip.
- 2:05Speaker 1: We're joined in studio by Scott Siegel. He is going
- 2:09Speaker 1: to talk about the annual CCA Banquet.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Thirty two, thirty four, thirty four.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I lost two years somewhere in between. I think we've
- 2:21Speaker 1: done all of this right, thirty four years. I think, yeah,
- 2:26Speaker 1: pretty close. It's it started. It started a little before
- 2:30Speaker 1: my show started, so oh really. Yeah, a couple of years.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I didn't even know you back then. That's right. Through
- 2:38Speaker 2: fishing and through church is how I got there. You go.
- 2:42Speaker 1: So this banquet, it just runs itself, right, You don't
- 2:48Speaker 1: have to do anything.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Well, it's a lot of work, I know that you
- 2:57Speaker 2: get five hundred people together. Yeah, it it's always been work.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But the work is easier right now because we have
- 3:08Speaker 2: our ducks in a row.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Well, that's a good thing. It's earlier this year, Am
- 3:12Speaker 1: I right about that?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yes, we had a scheduling conflict and we had to
- 3:17Speaker 2: move it up one month at the center and h
- 3:22Speaker 2: but everything, you know, we had to do all our
- 3:25Speaker 2: work a lot quicker, right, sooner this year, man, after
- 3:28Speaker 2: the first year, it comes quick, yes, very quick. Yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 2: We're still debating on what to do for next year.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Okay about the time of the banquet.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, we were going to put it in the banquet
- 3:42Speaker 2: save the date. Yeah, but we have not come to
- 3:47Speaker 2: a conclusion about that. That might take a little doing,
- 3:50Speaker 2: but we'll get it figured out.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So what what do you prefer? What would you prefer
- 3:59Speaker 1: for a bank with date earlier the later date?
- 4:04Speaker 2: Well? For me, yeah, I personally like it. The first
- 4:09Speaker 2: Friday in March. But that is my personal opinion. They
- 4:12Speaker 2: are different opinions. I don't really care when it is.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Yeah it people are.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Gonna come no matter what.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah, people are going to come. You know. We have
- 4:24Speaker 2: to do our work mostly well in December, which was
- 4:30Speaker 2: kind of hard to do to do, but a lot
- 4:33Speaker 2: of work in January. In fact, we had a meeting.
- 4:38Speaker 2: We've had a meeting every two weeks. We had a
- 4:40Speaker 2: meeting last Thursday night, and then we will have a
- 4:43Speaker 2: meeting on this coming Monday. Yeah. Uh, you know, the
- 4:47Speaker 2: week of the banquet, get all our you know, make
- 4:51Speaker 2: sure everythings organized, will review the program for the sponsors
- 4:56Speaker 2: and the game.
- 4:56Speaker 1: How many how many people do you expect uh on
- 5:00Speaker 1: a on a given banquet here?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Uh, typically around four hundred. Okay, we've done pretty good
- 5:07Speaker 2: on our.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Tables, squasorships have any life, Yes we do. There you go,
- 5:13Speaker 1: let's get.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Some it's uh, there's all kinds of ways to get
- 5:18Speaker 2: a table or individual tickets. Okay, sponsorship to the banquet.
- 5:24Speaker 1: By the way, we do have some tickets we're gonna
- 5:26Speaker 1: be given away. We may not do it tonight, but
- 5:28Speaker 1: we are going to give some away.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you can Uh, you can go to c c
- 5:33Speaker 2: A Texas dot Org. C c A Texas dot org.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Or you can go to ticket Stripe. Okay, Brass Valley
- 5:45Speaker 2: two thousand.
- 5:46Speaker 1: All right, let's just let's just stick with CCA Texas
- 5:49Speaker 1: dot org.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, or CLUS outdoor.
- 5:52Speaker 1: People get confused easily. Yeah, or just call me.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I'll help you get there. My phone number is nine
- 6:01Speaker 2: seven nine eight two zero three, one zero one. You
- 6:07Speaker 2: can also find information on Facebook. I saw that that's
- 6:14Speaker 2: coming across.
- 6:15Speaker 1: There's lots of ways to get information at the banquet.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, or just call Chip, call me.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Hey, I'll tell you the way. I know the way.
- 6:25Speaker 1: We've been there a few times, so yeah, we could
- 6:27Speaker 1: do that.
- 6:28Speaker 2: It's at the Brasses Center February.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Sixth that's that's suit.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah, week from tomorrow night. That's correct. Okay, let's Quinn.
- 6:36Speaker 2: We're looking forward to it. T the door is open,
- 6:40Speaker 2: you know, I don't six five thirty.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Six, and who you got.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Caterie always seeing Jay Barbara.
- 6:49Speaker 1: We got to get We've got to give them a.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Plug, you know, Chip, Chip and Joe have. In fact,
- 6:53Speaker 2: Chip was one of our original members and he him
- 6:59Speaker 2: and seeing Jay Barbecue have always been tremendous sponsor sponsors
- 7:04Speaker 2: of ours. They'll be there this next Friday night, and uh.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Justin will be back there handing out food.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I know, I'm sure he will excellent.
- 7:18Speaker 1: And in the past hadn't always been barbecue, no, which
- 7:23Speaker 1: which I kind of like because every back what you
- 7:25Speaker 1: go to here's barbecue and not that I don't like barbecue.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Well from what I understand, you know, seeing Jay has
- 7:33Speaker 2: they have a chef and always they cater comes up
- 7:36Speaker 2: with something different, and.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Uh, it's always been good.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Years ago, when the price of beef got so high,
- 7:44Speaker 2: we decided to go with something besides yeah, brisket, yeah,
- 7:48Speaker 2: and sausage, and it was well received and so we
- 7:54Speaker 2: decided to continue doing that and it's worked out real well.
- 8:00Speaker 1: You guys give away a lot of stuff. You auctioned
- 8:03Speaker 1: off a lot of good trips, don't you.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yes, lots of good trip Oh.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Any of them caught your eye? You know, you and
- 8:13Speaker 1: I have done that before. We went to Cabo on
- 8:16Speaker 1: one of those trips a few years ago.
- 8:18Speaker 2: We went to Cabo. I've been to Costa Rica, yeah, yeah,
- 8:24Speaker 2: I did not go Alaska trip. I've been to Alaska
- 8:29Speaker 2: a couple of times. But not through Okay, but uh,
- 8:33Speaker 2: there are some excellent trips that are available.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Did I get this? I may not have got this right.
- 8:39Speaker 1: There is there like an Argentina and Dove hunt on
- 8:41Speaker 1: that on that this year.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Well, Chip, I have not seen the official list. I
- 8:46Speaker 2: won't see that until Monday night. Okay, we'll have a
- 8:50Speaker 2: meeting and go through the Oh yeah, it's always good.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Yeah, guided fishing trips, fishing. There's all kinds of uh
- 8:58Speaker 1: prints there, there's lots of rod and reels and fishing
- 9:03Speaker 1: tackle their gun giveaways.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I do know that we have in the Silent auction
- 9:09Speaker 2: this year we have a pair of custom rods. Wows
- 9:16Speaker 2: all forgot. I'm sorry. I'm sorry to the sponsor, but uh,
- 9:21Speaker 2: they you bid on the rods at the Silent Auction table.
- 9:28Speaker 2: We're not going to do it electronically like we did
- 9:31Speaker 2: last year. Okay, it'll be right in your bid yep.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And but whoever wins that item gets to work with
- 9:42Speaker 2: the rod company making their own rods. That's pretty cool. Yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 2: that'll be pretty good.
- 9:48Speaker 1: That is very cool, very cool. Uh, there's always and
- 9:55Speaker 1: my wife thinks I have enough, but I don't think
- 9:57Speaker 1: you can have enough guns.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Or fishing rods. Can't have too many, but I.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Seem to buy I see, seemed to end up with
- 10:04Speaker 1: the rotten reel.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Every year at the banquet, somebody say, you can't have
- 10:07Speaker 2: too many. I have too many.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Yeah, me too, but hey, that's okay.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Well I have two.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I mean there's tackle boxes, there's there's fishing knives, there's
- 10:17Speaker 1: there's this. It's hard to describe the level of the
- 10:21Speaker 1: variety of outdoor opportunities that that you have at this banquet.
- 10:27Speaker 2: There's lots of opportunity and it's fun for people, not
- 10:32Speaker 2: just fishermen, any just anybody. Something there to interest you.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And I'm glad you brought that up. You bring the
- 10:41Speaker 1: kids to this thing.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yes, bring the kids.
- 10:45Speaker 1: CCA has lots of uh youth opportunities during the Star
- 10:50Speaker 1: Tournament every every year.
- 10:51Speaker 2: You know, the Star Tournament is huge. I was looking
- 10:56Speaker 2: at all of the awards that they're going to that
- 11:03Speaker 2: you can fish for. Besides the tag redfish, they have
- 11:07Speaker 2: different divisions in the tag redfish, they have blue tag,
- 11:11Speaker 2: red tag. Wow, I didn't know that green tags and different.
- 11:16Speaker 2: We've got college scholarships for kids for the Star Tournament. Yep. Yes,
- 11:23Speaker 2: we actually had local kids win a college scholarship. I
- 11:29Speaker 2: think there are thirty thousand dollars scholarships, and I think
- 11:35Speaker 2: it's between You'd have to look at the website between
- 11:40Speaker 2: six and sixteen. You're available to fish for that. The
- 11:46Speaker 2: scholarship is to any Texas state college, your university.
- 11:52Speaker 1: And I know they have sheep, said gaff Top. They
- 11:54Speaker 1: also do redfish, I guess for that. I have not
- 12:02Speaker 1: used to do used to do big trout before the
- 12:07Speaker 1: rules changed a little bit, yeah, which I'm fine with.
- 12:10Speaker 2: By the way that there's I don't I'm pretty sure
- 12:13Speaker 2: there's not a trout division this year either.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Have you have you heard I saw a little video
- 12:20Speaker 1: this week on South Padre with the mullet in the harbor,
- 12:25Speaker 1: you know, kind of floating, and some of them were okay,
- 12:28Speaker 1: some of them weren't. Because of the cold weather we've
- 12:31Speaker 1: had over the last week, I haven't heard of any.
- 12:35Speaker 1: In fact, one of the guys shooting had said, I
- 12:37Speaker 1: am going out today see what I could find. I
- 12:40Speaker 1: haven't heard of any massive killoffs.
- 12:43Speaker 8: I have not.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Typically, which is good because man the fishery the last
- 12:50Speaker 1: couple of three years, what they've changed the rules, it
- 12:53Speaker 1: has been extremely healthy. You could see the size and
- 12:59Speaker 1: quality of trout almost immediately taking shape that we've caught
- 13:04Speaker 1: the last few years.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Well, I think it's excellent that we Parks and Wildlife
- 13:10Speaker 2: changed the regulations on speckled trout. Yep. You know we
- 13:16Speaker 2: had a freeze what seven five six, seven years ago
- 13:21Speaker 2: back when that really impacted the trout fishery, and so
- 13:28Speaker 2: you know, the limit used to be ten and it
- 13:31Speaker 2: was five. Now it's down to three, which is plenty.
- 13:37Speaker 2: It it has helped the trout fishery recover pretty good.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's it recovered remarkably well. Fortunately we
- 13:50Speaker 1: had had anything like we had in twenty one. Yet
- 13:54Speaker 1: this wasn't It was close, but it wasn't single digits
- 13:58Speaker 1: and it wasn't immediate either.
- 14:01Speaker 2: No, it takes a while. Yeah, but the trout fishery
- 14:04Speaker 2: is healthy. Yes. Another thing CCA does. One of the
- 14:10Speaker 2: hundreds of projects they have besides building reefs, is the
- 14:15Speaker 2: last couple of years they've really been taking a good
- 14:19Speaker 2: look and a focus at the oysters. Yes.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Yes, I don't think people understand the importance of what
- 14:27Speaker 1: oysters do for their ecosystem and purifying the water. I
- 14:32Speaker 1: mean they are critical, critical in helping our water quality.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Yeah, they really do. There's a lot of information on
- 14:40Speaker 2: the CCA Texas dot Org.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Research Institute's done a bunch of things too.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Shane Ye down in Corpus is very knowledgeable and always
- 14:52Speaker 2: involved in that stuff. And actually we had him up
- 14:56Speaker 2: here as a speaker at one of our meetings and
- 14:58Speaker 2: he just he knows everything. It seems like just a
- 15:03Speaker 2: good guy.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I know that this banquet Scott despite the size of
- 15:08Speaker 1: our community, is still one of the largest producing banquets
- 15:12Speaker 1: in the state.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Correct. Well, I'm not going to say one of the largest,
- 15:20Speaker 2: because if we would have to be in the category
- 15:22Speaker 2: with chapters like Austin, Corpus, Christie, Houston and like that.
- 15:27Speaker 2: But as far as a per capita return, it's pretty good. Yes,
- 15:32Speaker 2: we probably have around seven hundred and fifty members right
- 15:37Speaker 2: here in the Brasis Valley.
- 15:39Speaker 1: How does that compare to when you first started.
- 15:44Speaker 2: They were probably I don't know. I don't know that
- 15:50Speaker 2: you know, there may have been a hundred and Funny
- 15:55Speaker 2: thing is that's how I even got involved with CCA
- 15:58Speaker 2: is I had read in the Houston Chronicle back in
- 16:02Speaker 2: the early nineties that you know about the tag redfish.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I was getting ready to go to surf side fishing,
- 16:11Speaker 2: and I thought that's a pretty good deal. You know
- 16:14Speaker 2: what if I catch a tag redfish, I go in
- 16:16Speaker 2: a boat and not a member, I would fill awful.
- 16:20Speaker 2: So I made sure I joined CCA and entered the
- 16:24Speaker 2: Star Tournament. And then about three months later I read
- 16:29Speaker 2: in the Eagle that the CCA chapter Brezis Valley was forming,
- 16:37Speaker 2: and I thought, I'm a member. Maybe I'll meet somebody
- 16:42Speaker 2: that likes to fish as much as I do, and
- 16:44Speaker 2: you maybe I'll meet somebody that has a boat that
- 16:47Speaker 2: can go with them. And we met the end of
- 16:52Speaker 2: it may have been the first of October, and then
- 16:55Speaker 2: the last weekend of October we took a trip and
- 16:58Speaker 2: we had twenty nine while twenty five people go.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Seems like there are a lot of people that wanted
- 17:07Speaker 1: to go.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Oh it was a blast.
- 17:09Speaker 1: And you still do the tournament every summer.
- 17:11Speaker 2: We have there's what they call the inter Chapter Challenge
- 17:16Speaker 2: now that's first or second week every June. It's been
- 17:22Speaker 2: lots of places.
- 17:24Speaker 1: There and there may or may not have been over
- 17:25Speaker 1: the years some rule breaking going on.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Well, I have some interesting stories about that that go back.
- 17:34Speaker 2: It's a lot more sophisticated. Now, now i'd say a catch,
- 17:41Speaker 2: photo and release tournament. It's awesome, and we're all issued
- 17:44Speaker 2: a measuring board and you have to teach a t
- 17:48Speaker 2: shirt way and I like that. It's it really works
- 17:54Speaker 2: out pretty good. Except the captain of our team last
- 17:59Speaker 2: year did not instruct our team members how to measure
- 18:04Speaker 2: and uh so we had two fish that were disqualified.
- 18:10Speaker 2: I hate that, and uh but I told them they
- 18:13Speaker 2: needed to fire the captain, which that was me. Anyway,
- 18:21Speaker 2: it's all fun, So.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Let's go back over this again. Tickets are still available.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Tickets are available, Table sponsorships are still available. Yes, you
- 18:32Speaker 1: can go that website and Texas dot org. That's correct,
- 18:37Speaker 1: and you can buy individual tickets. How about at the door?
- 18:40Speaker 1: Will you ever have I know you want a good
- 18:42Speaker 1: head count? Do you sell any tickets at the door
- 18:45Speaker 1: of the back?
- 18:45Speaker 2: Who you know? Back when before things were digital? Yeah,
- 18:50Speaker 2: that was an easy question to answer. Yeah you, I
- 18:56Speaker 2: don't know when they closed that out. Okay, but I
- 18:58Speaker 2: would assume that you can do it right there on
- 19:02Speaker 2: your phone before you get in the door. If you
- 19:04Speaker 2: need help, just show up and will help you do it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, how much your tickets.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Individual tickets are fifty dollars that includes membership for a
- 19:15Speaker 2: year to CCA and the perks that go along with that.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Reserve tables or seven hundred dollars that includes a table
- 19:27Speaker 2: for eight people. Each person gets a membership for a year,
- 19:34Speaker 2: and then there are some table gifts that go along
- 19:37Speaker 2: with that. Corporate tables are one thousand dollars for eight
- 19:42Speaker 2: people members. Everything is included that the reserve tables give.
- 19:48Speaker 2: But there is table service. Yes, there are additional table
- 19:57Speaker 2: gifts and premium seating at the bank. Okay.
- 20:02Speaker 9: Uh.
- 20:02Speaker 1: And like I said, and the perks at this banquet,
- 20:05Speaker 1: the things that you can come up with at and
- 20:10Speaker 1: go on amazing trips and still have an incredible handed
- 20:14Speaker 1: conservation along the Texas coast phenomenal. You guys do a
- 20:18Speaker 1: great job of getting these trips together, the gifts together,
- 20:21Speaker 1: the silent auctions together. It's it's uh. It's one of
- 20:26Speaker 1: the big outdoor banquets certainly of the year.
- 20:28Speaker 2: You were talking about children being involved. Yes, well, I
- 20:34Speaker 2: want to have a shout out to my daughter. Today's
- 20:37Speaker 2: her time ninth birthday. Happy birthday, Morgan. And and we
- 20:41Speaker 2: were having talking about too many fishing rods. She just
- 20:46Speaker 2: had twins, Yes, she did. And Uh, I've been thinking
- 20:51Speaker 2: about Okay, these old fishing rods, I'm going to have to, yeah,
- 20:57Speaker 2: save them and care them. Get them ready, Tche's cute
- 21:01Speaker 2: little girl. I was thinking about it. I gotta buy
- 21:04Speaker 2: a life jacket.
- 21:06Speaker 6: You know.
- 21:06Speaker 1: We've done all that, man, We've done all that.
- 21:08Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to that act.
- 21:10Speaker 1: You create a whole new generation, which we desperately need
- 21:13Speaker 1: because we're aging out some of these outdoor things.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Absolutely, and I encourage everybody to take a kid fishing
- 21:20Speaker 2: and fishing.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Get them outdoors.
- 21:23Speaker 2: You do a good job of that.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Yeah, get it, get them, get them away from them
- 21:27Speaker 1: video games, as sat Kill would call it.
- 21:29Speaker 2: So but we have to get them interested now. Yeah.

- 26:16Speaker 7: Chip along with Trey. Coming up in this segment, We're
- 26:21Speaker 7: gonna hear an interview Chip did with Forrest Galante, who
- 26:24Speaker 7: is a television personality, hosts a couple of shows on
- 26:28Speaker 7: Animal Planet, has appeared on a lot of Shark week shows.
- 26:32Speaker 7: They talked about some rare sharks found in the depths
- 26:37Speaker 7: of the ocean. Here is Chip and Forrest.
- 26:42Speaker 11: Forrest, how are you hey, Chip on very well, how
- 26:45Speaker 11: are you great?
- 26:46Speaker 1: Great to talk to you again. And I think I
- 26:49Speaker 1: remember from the last time you really enjoy discovering brand
- 26:55Speaker 1: new species of animals that have never been discovered before.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Am I'm right about that?
- 27:00Speaker 11: I enjoyed that. I enjoy finding lost species.
- 27:03Speaker 8: I enjoy finding and showcasing little known species. Basically anything
- 27:08Speaker 8: that brings the animals that don't usually get their spotlight
- 27:11Speaker 8: into the hearts and homes of millions.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm reading about alien sharks tomorrow night. It's
- 27:18Speaker 1: nine o'clock, Texas time on Discovery for Shark Week. I
- 27:21Speaker 1: didn't know anything about the venomous Port Jackson shark or
- 27:27Speaker 1: ghost shark. Where did those come from?
- 27:30Speaker 11: Yeah? Great question.
- 27:31Speaker 8: So the title of the show is Guest down Under,
- 27:34Speaker 8: which should give you a little bit of a hint,
- 27:36Speaker 8: which it takes place in Australia where everything's trying.
- 27:40Speaker 11: To kill you, as they say.
- 27:41Speaker 8: But you know what we came to find is, well,
- 27:44Speaker 8: the Port Jackson shark may have a little bit of venom.
- 27:46Speaker 11: That's certainly nothing to worry about the camera.
- 27:49Speaker 8: However, the ghost shark or elfin shark that has some
- 27:52Speaker 8: pretty strong venoms. So we captured that animal, we extracted
- 27:55Speaker 8: its venom, We isolated and purified that venom, and we
- 27:58Speaker 8: tested it on the human body aka me. Thankfully, we
- 28:02Speaker 8: diluted it, and I'll tell you this, it hurt like hell.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Chip Are you crazy?
- 28:08Speaker 11: I was a little crazy for that one.
- 28:10Speaker 8: After doing that, I said to my wife, I was like,
- 28:11Speaker 8: you know what, I've never done that before. Usually I'm
- 28:14Speaker 8: trying to evade getting hurt by things. That was a
- 28:17Speaker 8: one and done for me. I won't be injecting more
- 28:19Speaker 8: venom into my system. I did not enjoy that experience.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So they did that with a needle, did correct.
- 28:25Speaker 8: Yeah, it's very very scientifically organized. It's not just the
- 28:28Speaker 8: sort of YouTube stunt of sticking myself with something.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Oh, I get that. So what was the reaction?
- 28:36Speaker 11: Just excruciating pain.
- 28:37Speaker 8: You know, I've been stung by sting rays three or
- 28:39Speaker 8: four times in my life because I spent a lot
- 28:41Speaker 8: of time surfing in the ocean, and it felt very
- 28:43Speaker 8: similar to that. It was just a really harsh, really
- 28:47Speaker 8: sharp pain. It didn't go away for quite a while,
- 28:50Speaker 8: and eventually we were able to use heat to neutralize it.
- 28:53Speaker 11: But it just it just hurt, like help.
- 28:56Speaker 1: How long have you known about the ghost shark?
- 29:00Speaker 11: Well, this is my world.
- 29:01Speaker 8: You know, I work in science of animals, so I've
- 29:04Speaker 8: known about that species a very long time, but I've
- 29:07Speaker 8: never been able to you know, I create the shows
- 29:10Speaker 8: that we put out. I write them and script them
- 29:12Speaker 8: and create them. I've never been able to create and
- 29:14Speaker 8: sell a show on them before getting this Alien Sharks franchise.
- 29:18Speaker 8: So once we once we picked up that franchise and
- 29:22Speaker 8: we're able to start showcasing more of these unique species
- 29:26Speaker 8: that I had my sight set on. That shark for
- 29:28Speaker 8: a few years and so we were lucky enough to
- 29:30Speaker 8: do it this year.
- 29:31Speaker 1: How rare is that species?
- 29:34Speaker 8: Not very you know, it's just a deep water shark
- 29:36Speaker 8: and it's quite elusive, but it's not very rare in
- 29:39Speaker 8: the sense of it's not critically endangered or anything like that.
- 29:42Speaker 8: It's just it lives in a very deep environment, thousands
- 29:45Speaker 8: of feet deep where people typically don't get to see them.
- 29:48Speaker 1: So it's not just contained at Australia.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Correct.
- 29:53Speaker 8: So Chimeras is a classification of animals and they're spread
- 29:56Speaker 8: out in a couple different locations. We have them in
- 29:58Speaker 8: northern California, we have them Japan, we have them in Norway.
- 30:01Speaker 8: But the one that we were able to access, the
- 30:03Speaker 8: one that comes up shallower than all the others, was
- 30:07Speaker 8: the one in Australia, and so yeah, that's where we
- 30:09Speaker 8: went to focus on that one.
- 30:10Speaker 11: But they're all individual specie.
- 30:12Speaker 8: My good colleague, doctor Dave Ebert, he's he's probably the
- 30:15Speaker 8: world's leading shark scientists. He's currently writing a book on them,
- 30:18Speaker 8: and I think he told me there's something like twenty
- 30:20Speaker 8: five different species of them.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Wow.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Okay, before we get to your new show, let's talk
- 30:27Speaker 1: about the Friday show, Florida's Death Beach. That'll be at
- 30:31Speaker 1: eight o'clock Texas time, Smyrna Beach and I everybody who
- 30:36Speaker 1: you know follows sharks knows about Spurna Beach. I had
- 30:38Speaker 1: no idea that it has accounted for thirty percent of
- 30:42Speaker 1: global shark attacks. That seems a lot.
- 30:46Speaker 8: More shark bites there than everywhere else in the world
- 30:49Speaker 8: put together. And it's because of a variety of factors.
- 30:52Speaker 8: And that's what the show really digged into. It's why
- 30:55Speaker 8: are there so many bites there? What is it that's
- 30:57Speaker 8: happening with regards to smaller sharks, the bigger sharks, the swimmers,
- 31:02Speaker 8: the food, the bait, everything else that adds up to understand,
- 31:07Speaker 8: you know, just why there's there's so many bites there.
- 31:10Speaker 8: And it's a really cool show. I don't team up
- 31:12Speaker 8: with doctor Tristan Gutridge. He's a great scientist and a
- 31:14Speaker 8: good colleague and you know, we have we have a
- 31:17Speaker 8: good time.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that sounds like just a blast.
- 31:21Speaker 11: Uh uh.
- 31:23Speaker 1: We're talking about multiple species of sharks then, correct, h.
- 31:29Speaker 8: Well, it's really primarily one species that are responsible for
- 31:32Speaker 8: the bites. However, it's a variety of species that lead
- 31:37Speaker 8: to the bites taking place. So to explain that, what
- 31:40Speaker 8: happens is they're migratory black tip sharks that come into
- 31:44Speaker 8: New Summerna Beach every year, and they're a smaller shark,
- 31:46Speaker 8: you know, get up six or seven feet long. But
- 31:49Speaker 8: they're also on the menu for bigger sharks. So tiger
- 31:53Speaker 8: sharks will eat them, hammer heads will eat them, great
- 31:56Speaker 8: white sharks will eat them. And so these sharks are
- 31:58Speaker 8: on edge because, as there might, they're being predated upon
- 32:01Speaker 8: by these larger sharks. In addition to that, they themselves
- 32:04Speaker 8: are hungry, so they have to go in shallow where
- 32:06Speaker 8: the bait fish are. So the sharks are on edge
- 32:08Speaker 8: and they can only defend themselves, the black tips with
- 32:10Speaker 8: their mouths, and at the same time they're hungry. And
- 32:13Speaker 8: then at the same time, in addition to that, guess what,
- 32:15Speaker 8: it's spring break, it's summer. There's tons of people in
- 32:18Speaker 8: the water, and they're hanging out in New Sumurna, which
- 32:20Speaker 8: is low visibility, high turbidity.
- 32:22Speaker 11: It's known as a great surfing spot.
- 32:24Speaker 8: And so when you put all these factors together, what
- 32:27Speaker 8: you end up with is feet dangling in the water
- 32:30Speaker 8: where sharks are looking for food, and they're scared of
- 32:33Speaker 8: things that go bump in the night, and so they
- 32:35Speaker 8: end up nipping people on the feet and legs a
- 32:37Speaker 8: whole lot, you know, sometimes creating pretty severe bites, but
- 32:39Speaker 8: for the most part, you know, a couple stitches kind
- 32:42Speaker 8: of thing. And that's what is leading to this incredibly
- 32:45Speaker 8: high rate of shark attacks.
- 32:47Speaker 1: So let's talk about Animals on Drugs, which begins next Monday.
- 32:53Speaker 1: If I'm not mistaken, there was a Shark Week episode
- 32:58Speaker 1: on sharks at looking and studying. Are they having a
- 33:03Speaker 1: lot of cocaine that's being dumped in the waters around Florida?
- 33:07Speaker 1: If I remember correctly, it was there wasn't you didn't
- 33:12Speaker 1: find a high rate of say, cocaine and a lot
- 33:16Speaker 1: of sharks that you studied. Am I right about that?
- 33:20Speaker 11: I know nothing about that.
- 33:21Speaker 8: Okay, Okay, even though they've done that, that has nothing
- 33:23Speaker 8: to do with me. The show, however, is a little
- 33:26Speaker 8: bit different. I mean, maybe the same premise, but the
- 33:29Speaker 8: premise of my series Animals on Drugs is simply exactly
- 33:33Speaker 8: what it sounds like. Animals have no choice, however, They're
- 33:36Speaker 8: being exposed to human narcotics and substances. Some of that
- 33:40Speaker 8: includes things like viagra, you know, and it's stuff that
- 33:43Speaker 8: we as human beings are putting into the ecosystem, putting
- 33:47Speaker 8: into the waterways, and they're bioaccumulating, meaning it's moving up
- 33:50Speaker 8: the food chain to the predators, and you end up
- 33:53Speaker 8: with quite literal metagators, drunk bears, cocaine, hippos, and the
- 33:58Speaker 8: list goes on and on. And these are animals that
- 34:00Speaker 8: don't have a choice. They didn't choose to have the
- 34:02Speaker 8: beer or sniff the coke, you know, they end up
- 34:05Speaker 8: exposed to it, and it's creating ecosystem collapse. It is
- 34:09Speaker 8: creating aggression, it's creating breeding issues and health issues, and
- 34:14Speaker 8: it's you know, I like to do things quite in
- 34:16Speaker 8: a scientific fashion, as you know, but it's chip, you know,
- 34:20Speaker 8: it's creating a lot of issues, and the point is
- 34:22Speaker 8: to expose this and hopefully people can be more responsible
- 34:25Speaker 8: with their substances as a result of it.
- 34:27Speaker 1: I'm very interested in these hippos from Pablo Escobar's Cocaine
- 34:34Speaker 1: hide Out being extremely aggressive, because hippos are already pretty dangerous,
- 34:40Speaker 1: are they not.
- 34:42Speaker 11: They're extremely dangerous.
- 34:43Speaker 8: They're the one animal that every time I work with them,
- 34:45Speaker 8: I end up having a close call. And you know,
- 34:49Speaker 8: the situation down in Columbia is thus that Pablo Escua
- 34:52Speaker 8: brought in four hippos. When he was killed, the hippos escaped,
- 34:56Speaker 8: and when they escaped, they just started breeding. But unlike
- 34:58Speaker 8: in Africa where they're native to, there are no predators
- 35:01Speaker 8: for them.
- 35:01Speaker 11: So if you read online, you'll read that there's one
- 35:05Speaker 11: hundred and twenty hippos.
- 35:06Speaker 8: I can tell you from first antic experience there's well
- 35:08Speaker 8: over two hundred hippos. And with those two hundred hppos
- 35:11Speaker 8: running around, they're quite literally killing people. They're creating devastation
- 35:17Speaker 8: in the ecosystem. Things that people aren't talking about, like
- 35:19Speaker 8: the critically endangered Rio Magdalena river turtle. It's nesting area
- 35:23Speaker 8: is being trampled by these hippos, crushing the eggs. You know,
- 35:26Speaker 8: it's just creating a big problem. And the people of
- 35:29Speaker 8: Colombia have sort of grown to love them because there's
- 35:31Speaker 8: somewhat of a cultural icon there.
- 35:33Speaker 11: And so the.
- 35:34Speaker 8: Question is how do we deal with these hippos without
- 35:37Speaker 8: killing them? So I partnered with the Colombian government an
- 35:40Speaker 8: organization called Cornare, and we work together to create a
- 35:44Speaker 8: blueprint for how to manage that and that. You know,
- 35:46Speaker 8: it's a three pillared approach of castration, sterilization, and relocation.
- 35:52Speaker 8: And I'll tell you this, when you're trying to catch
- 35:54Speaker 8: a hippo and cut his nuts off in the field,
- 35:56Speaker 8: they're usually.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Not too happy about it. It's a pretty crazy joe.
- 36:01Speaker 1: This guy's certifiable. But you can catch him tomorrow night
- 36:06Speaker 1: on Discovery Alien Sharks Friday night, and then the news
- 36:10Speaker 1: show begins on Monday for Ust. Great to catch up
- 36:13Speaker 1: with you again, Thanks so much, Thanks Chip.
