- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to Kenny Conversation, brought

- 0:08parts. Remember to go to jags.com for
- 0:12everything you need to fix your vehicle up.
- 0:15So you're probably wondering why the legend Doctor Jerry Punch is
- 0:20here right now. We're in the media room at the
- 0:22Bristol Motor Speedway, and this is part three of the Rusty
- 0:28Wallace stories. And we don't need Rusty because
- 0:32Rusty was knocked out where this story goes.
- 0:35So, Doc, do we remember what year this was?
- 0:38It was actually, it was August of 1988.
- 0:42I was here. I don't know why I was here.
- 0:44I think it was when I was just getting going, but so Rusty is
- 0:50in the Kodiak car. Right.
- 0:52All right. Barry Dodson's the crew chief,
- 0:55and we have a waging tire war. We have Hoosier and Goodyear.
- 0:59Right. You take it from there.
- 1:02Well, it's Friday evening and it's a it's a late practice
- 1:06session because there's going to be a Bush Series race that
- 1:08night, a couple hours. And so not many people wanted to
- 1:11go out, you know, late in the heat in the afternoon.
- 1:14So there were two cars on the racetrack, Rusty and Dale
- 1:16Earnhardt Senior. What a shock.
- 1:19That's a show. So, so, so third lap by Rusty's
- 1:24coming off Turn 4 and I hear this and I'm standing on pit Rd.
- 1:27on the front straightaway getting ready to interview Rick
- 1:30Mass, one of the Bush series drivers.
- 1:32And we were going to wait till these guys run a couple laps and
- 1:35it gets quiet. We can do the interview for the
- 1:36race that night on television. I hear a crunch.
- 1:40I look up and I see Rusty's car has come off the wall and turned
- 1:444, and it's spiraling upward, his Pontiac Grand Prix like a
- 1:47punt, like a football. And then it hits on the nose and
- 1:50on its side and begins to barrel roll down the front
- 1:53straightaway. Now you think we're at Bristol,
- 1:55so how fast could it be going? But it rolled, and there's video
- 1:57of it showing it rolling. It comes to rest with the front
- 1:59of the car up on the pit wall and the roof caved in about 20
- 2:04feet from where I'm standing. So I I literally run over there.
- 2:07I'm in my ESPN orange golf shirt and I get to the window and the
- 2:12roof is pushed down. The window net is pushed down so
- 2:14I can't get the window net loose and rusty.
- 2:16He's got an open face, helmet on and he slumped over in the seat
- 2:20and there's blood trickling out of both sides.
- 2:22I didn't know. I didn't.
- 2:23I didn't know this part. Yeah.
- 2:24And he's and I looked down and I'm an ER doc, a trauma doc.
- 2:27So I, I, I look down and I don't see his uniform moving at all.
- 2:31So he's not breathing. So I don't know why he's in
- 2:33respiratory arrest. At the time I didn't know what
- 2:35really happened, so I'm just trying to get to him.
- 2:38I can't get the window net. The roof is down, the bar is
- 2:40crunched. I can get my fingers through the
- 2:42net just enough to get to his jaw.
- 2:44His chin is forward and I'm trying not to turn his and pull
- 2:47his neck, but I want to pull his jaw forward to try to get an
- 2:50airway. I just get the edge of his jaw
- 2:52and pull it forward and I see his uniform move about an inch,
- 2:55so I know I've gotten an airway there.
- 2:57Earnhardt, meanwhile, has slid his car.
- 2:59It'll stop on the track, runs out of his car, runs over and
- 3:02sees all the smoke blowing out of Rusty's car.
- 3:04He's yelling, what do we do? What do we do?
- 3:06I said, Dale, we got to get this roof off.
- 3:07I got to get to him. He doesn't.
- 3:09He's not breathing. So Dale's screaming.
- 3:12Dick Beatty, who's the NASCAR series director, comes over and
- 3:15I'm. And I'm telling Nick I got to
- 3:16get to him. I got you.
- 3:17So their their equipment truck pulls up and they're trying to
- 3:21saw the part of a bar so I can get into the window net and Dick
- 3:25takes his Winston Cup hat off and holds it in front of my face
- 3:28while I'm holding Rusty's jaw because I can't move and else he
- 3:32doesn't have an. Airway and we don't want the
- 3:33grinding to get in your face. All the grinding and the sparks,
- 3:36everything to burn me. So I'm holding that they get it
- 3:39open. We get into Rusty, we get an
- 3:41airway, we put a backboard on him, we get the top of the car
- 3:43off, we lift him up, put him in an ambulance.
- 3:45He's still, he's coming too. He's a little groggy but get in
- 3:48the ambulance and he's starting to breathe on his own.
- 3:51There was no doctor here that day so I'm in there in my ESPN
- 3:56shirt and and the paramedics said, what do we do, Doc?
- 3:59I said, he said let's why don't why don't you intubate?
- 4:01He means put a tube in in one bag.
- 4:03I said no, he's waking up. He's breathing on his own.
- 4:05Let's put Ivs in both arms and let's.
- 4:08And so I told Rusty take a deep breath and I did a brief just
- 4:11just a cursory exam while he's in the animal just parked on the
- 4:14front straightaway. It's a start finish line and so
- 4:16he's he's waking up a little bit and and breathing on his own.
- 4:19I realize he's stable at this point in time.
- 4:21We don't know what injury he's got other injuries he may have
- 4:23until we gave him to the hospital and do a scan and do a
- 4:25couple X-rays of his neck. So I come out of the ambulance.
- 4:28They take off and go to the hospital.
- 4:30About two hours and a half later I I get, I'm on my headset.
- 4:35We're about 30 minutes from starting the Bush race.
- 4:37I'm on my headset walking up Pit Rd. and I get a note, a call
- 4:41from the TV truck that said Rusty had called.
- 4:44The hospital had called for Rusty to the racetrack.
- 4:47They passed him through to the TV truck to tell me thank you
- 4:51for what I had done and that he's going to be admitted
- 4:53overnight, but he's going to be OK And so, you know, obviously,
- 4:57that's great news. And so so word spread, spread
- 5:01very quickly in a garage area that Rusty was being invited but
- 5:03was going to be OK. So we're like 5 minutes before
- 5:06the race starts the Bush race and Dale Earnhardt comes walking
- 5:10down Pit Rd. As I'm walking up by the car is
- 5:12gritted, he goes walking down Pit Rd. walks right up to me and
- 5:14puts his finger in my chest and says, hey, do you hear about
- 5:17Rusty? He's going to be all right.
- 5:18I said, yeah, that's good news. And that's great news.
- 5:21And then Dale stopped and looked at me and said, you know, you
- 5:24probably say Rusty's Live Today. And then he just paused up there
- 5:27and he says, why would you do that?
- 5:30Why would anybody do that? Oh my God.
- 5:33And so, and then he started started to laugh, smile and
- 5:35stroking that big mustache. Because Rusty and Dale, as much
- 5:39as they were competitors on the racetrack, they were friends and
- 5:41buddies off the track. And once we knew Rusty was Okay,
- 5:45you know, Dale, a typical Dale Earnhardt, he wanted, hey, why
- 5:47would you do that? Why would anybody do that?
- 5:49Because they were competing for a championship.
- 5:51And the rest of the story is, Rusty gets discharged the next
- 5:54day. And we found out that his his
- 5:57respiratory arrest was not from a traumatic head injury.
- 6:01It was from that Knucklehead inhaled a ham sandwich right
- 6:06before he got in the car. With Manny's.
- 6:08And every rusty does everything quickly.
- 6:10So he inhaled a ham sandwich. Big bites, didn't chew it up.
- 6:13And as he was tumbling, part of that lump of that sandwich
- 6:16blocked his airway. And that's why he wasn't
- 6:18breathing. So the trauma wasn't his airway
- 6:21is not breathing, wasn't related to head trauma, it was related
- 6:24to an obstruction, which meant he could be discharged the next
- 6:27day. He came back and ran the full
- 6:29Cup race on Saturday night and finished 9th.
- 6:32Yeah. So first of all, incredible for
- 6:35me to see Doctor Jerry Punch here.
- 6:37I came around the corner. I'm like, oh, my gosh, very
- 6:40seldom do I come down at year 2024 and see my people.
- 6:44I consider you my people. You're a legend and everybody
- 6:48knows that. And we had a great time.
- 6:49And still here you are. All right, So let's talk about
- 6:53some of the things that I've learned.
- 6:55I'm going to say them and then you comment on them.
- 6:57So we all know that my Big Brother Rusty is.
- 7:00I mean, it's where I get my hyperactivity.
- 7:02I'm just times 10. Rusty's super hyper.
- 7:05I'm more hyper. But I learned from watching, you
- 7:08know, the people of age or or just learn from anybody.
- 7:12Ever since I've been around my brother, he eats so fast and
- 7:16we're hardly done with our food. And Rusty will say, OK, get up,
- 7:19let's go. And I'm like, we're only halfway
- 7:21through our our food. So because of that moment, I
- 7:27decided to make sure that if I eat before race, I eat way
- 7:33before. In your opinion, you're a doctor
- 7:37us race car drivers and want all the race car drivers to listen
- 7:40to this. We want to be ready to go for a
- 7:43long race and when should we eat our last morsel of food before
- 7:47we get into a race? Well, I'm going to say it no
- 7:50sooner, no later than an hour before.
- 7:53An hour. Give yourself because what
- 7:55happens is you know when you eat, you know the blood flow you
- 7:58know is is goes to the stomach that digests what you've just
- 8:01eaten. And you need all the blood flow
- 8:03to all the vital parts, your kidneys, your brain, everything
- 8:05during the race and your muscles so you don't need to have any
- 8:07distractions. And I would recommend you just
- 8:10go with a protein or a pasta the night before and something
- 8:13light, you know, I don't think you should.
- 8:15The hydration's OK Liquids, clear.
- 8:17Liquids, electrolytes, those things, 30 to 40 minutes before
- 8:20getting in the car because that's you're going to, you're
- 8:22going to lose that to perspiration and and your
- 8:26respiration. You're going to lose moisture.
- 8:28But not no solid foods, I would say.
- 8:30And nothing, nothing big. Yeah.
- 8:32I mean a light just just enough to give you some calories and
- 8:35some energy like, you know, no, no sooner than one hour before
- 8:38you race. Yeah.
- 8:39So. Most likely Rusty in inhaled
- 8:41that sandwich. I know him.
- 8:43He inhaled the sandwich, and when the sandwich was right
- 8:47here, he probably started getting in the car.
- 8:49Yeah, yeah. And that sandwich was still
- 8:51barely in the stomach. Well, Rusty told me, and so did
- 8:54Richard. Petty told me that he saw Rusty
- 8:56eating that sandwich, went to him and said, boy, you don't
- 8:57need to be doing that. You know what?
- 8:59And Richard, how how prophetic was that?
- 9:01It was a prophecy. And of course since that time,
- 9:04you know when everybody knew what happened was with Rusty.
- 9:07You see it's trial and error. You learn these things.
- 9:09A few years before we were in, I was in Daytona and I used to
- 9:13spend half a day as a doctor in the Medical Center at Daytona in
- 9:16the Monaco care center and the other half is a broadcaster.
- 9:19And we were in. It was a practice session for
- 9:23the Bush area late Model series in and there was AI won't
- 9:26mention his name. There was a guy who had won that
- 9:28race multiple times who lost control coming in a try Oval.
- 9:33His car goes head on into the wall.
- 9:34Right. The flag stand and yeah and and
- 9:39so he he this guy. You know we we we go down to the
- 9:42care center and this one wasn't LD by the way.
- 9:45Oh it wasn't OK. And so they bring him in and
- 9:49they think that he's gone because he could see a a lot of
- 9:52blood around his neck. Turns out what happened was he
- 9:55had a hound's tooth chain on wearing a chain around his neck
- 9:59and when he when he car spun, that chain spun and even though
- 10:03it was superficial that cut him from here to here, it looked
- 10:06like someone had just taken a knife and cut his throat.
- 10:09So while we're working on him, he ended up being OK.
- 10:12Now when you watch these football games or these baseball
- 10:15games and you see these athletes with the the necklaces that does
- 10:18it make you think about that. It does, because you and and
- 10:21most of those necklaces are sucked if they're pure gold.
- 10:24They're soft enough to break if someone grabs one.
- 10:26But I I with a race car driver back when they had the big
- 10:29hounds tooth that was sharp on edges and this guy spun.
- 10:33I don't know if because remember we didn't have didn't have the
- 10:35compartments where the seats are so the driver could move around
- 10:38and chances are he was moving One Direction to another and
- 10:41this chain cut him. So I remember while we're
- 10:44working on him and we're getting him resuscitated getting him.
- 10:48I called over to the office and had Bill Franks Junior come over
- 10:51because I wanted him to walk in the care center and see this
- 10:54guy's neck. And I said you need to tell
- 10:56drivers no jewelry and no metal rings wear, wear a rubber
- 11:01wetting ring because if you hit something with your and that
- 11:03ring pinches, you're going to lose a finger because you can't
- 11:05get it off. You're going to lose blood
- 11:06supply, you lose a finger and also no, no jewelry.
- 11:09So he he made a comment in in the drivers meeting at that
- 11:12point in time. From that point on, the driver
- 11:14shouldn't be wearing necklaces and jewelry out there on the
- 11:17racetrack because it could be could be dangerous.
- 11:18So I we could go on and on because you've you've seen it
- 11:22all, Doc. Let's end like this, something
- 11:24that we haven't talked about. I wish Barry Dotson was alive,
- 11:29but you can tell this story. So why did Rusty wreck that day?
- 11:34So we know about that, that tire battle I talked about and your
- 11:39memories are incredible right now.
- 11:41And we talked about it before we went on air here.
- 11:44So Rusty was on Hoosier tires that day.
- 11:47Why did that tire get cut down and why did it send him into the
- 11:51wall? Well, the speculation by the
- 11:53crew team, by Barry and the team went after rescue left to go and
- 11:57they went and looked at the car. Speculation was at that side
- 12:00wall in those tires. It was a tire war.
- 12:02So the flexible tire with more grip was with the way you know
- 12:06that was faster. But with the G force here, Rusty
- 12:10came up off turn 4 and the sidewall flex and they're saying
- 12:13the sidewall flex and allowed the right front tire to lean
- 12:16against the ball joint. And he just just like it was
- 12:19like a giant can open, just ripped it open And the car, the
- 12:22car just went down right up into the side of the concrete and
- 12:25grandstands and just started tumbling.
- 12:27Well, deep breath, everybody. That one has got me.
- 12:30I got goosebumps and I feel nauseated right now because I
- 12:33was there that day. But listen everybody, we are in
- 12:36podcast form and we always remind you that please like and
- 12:40subscribe here podcast form. That means we're on iTunes and

- 12:53Punch on the way home until then until the next show.
- 12:57Remember, Little Birdie tells me, Danica, Patrick's coming on
- 13:01Kyle Busch, so we got him in the pipeline, Doc, Let's say goodbye
- 13:05to everybody. Hey, thank you.
- 13:07Thanks for watching and listening.
