Speaker 1: Eight the crying of the puma. Montgomery interrupted my tangle
• 0:07
Speaker 1: of mystification and suspicion about one o'clock, and his grotesque
• 0:12
Speaker 1: attintant followed him with a tray bearing bread, some herbs,
• 0:16
Speaker 1: and other eatables, a flask of whisky, a jug of water,
• 0:20
Speaker 1: and three glasses and knives. I glanced askance at this
• 0:25
Speaker 1: strange creature, and found him watching me with his queer,
• 0:30
Speaker 1: restless eyes. Montgomery said he would lunch with me, but
• 0:35
Speaker 1: that Moreau was too preoccupied with some work to come.
• 0:40
Speaker 1: Moreau said, I I know that name the devil, you do,
• 0:46
Speaker 1: said he? What an ath I was to mention it
• 0:50
Speaker 1: to you? I might have thought, anyhow, it will give
• 0:55
Speaker 1: you an inkling of our myth to wreathe with GI
• 1:02
Speaker 1: no thanks. I'm an abstainer I with I had been,
• 1:07
Speaker 1: But it's no use locking the door after the steed
• 1:11
Speaker 1: hath stolen. It was that infernal stuff which led to
• 1:15
Speaker 1: my coming here, that and a foggy night. I thought
• 1:21
Speaker 1: myself in luck at the time when Moreau offered to
• 1:24
Speaker 1: get me off. It's queer, Montgomery said, I Suddenly, as
• 1:30
Speaker 1: the outer door closed, Why has your man pointed ears? Damn?
• 1:37
Speaker 1: He said, over his first mouthful of food. He stared
• 1:41
Speaker 1: at me for a moment, and then repeated pointed earth,
• 1:48
Speaker 1: little points to them, said I, as calmly as possible,
• 1:52
Speaker 1: with a catch in my breath and a fine black
• 1:56
Speaker 1: fur at the edges. He helped himself to whiskey and
• 2:00
Speaker 1: water with great deliberation. I was under the impression that
• 2:07
Speaker 1: his hair covered his earth. I saw them as he
• 2:12
Speaker 1: stooped by me to put that coffee assent to me
• 2:15
Speaker 1: on the table, and his eyes shine in the dark.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: By this time Montgomery had recovered from the surprise of
• 2:24
Speaker 1: my question. I always thought, he said, deliberately, with a
• 2:30
Speaker 1: certain accentuation of his flavoring of lisp, that there was
• 2:35
Speaker 1: something the matter with the earth from the way he
• 2:39
Speaker 1: covered them. What were they like? I was persuaded from
• 2:44
Speaker 1: his manner that this ignorance was a pretense. Still, I
• 2:49
Speaker 1: could hardly tell the man that I thought him a liar, pointed,
• 2:54
Speaker 1: I said, rather small and furry, distinctly furry. But the
• 3:00
Speaker 1: whole man is one of the strangest beings I ever
• 3:03
Speaker 1: set eyes on. A sharp, hoarse cry of animal pain
• 3:08
Speaker 1: came from the enclosure behind us. Its depth and volume
• 3:11
Speaker 1: testified to the puma. I saw Montgomery WinCE. Yes, he said,
• 3:20
Speaker 1: where did you pick up the creature? Than Francisco Heath
• 3:25
Speaker 1: an ugly brute, I admit, half witted, you know, can't
• 3:29
Speaker 1: remember where he came from. But I'm youth to him,
• 3:33
Speaker 1: you know, we both are. How does he strike you?
• 3:39
  Speaker 1: He's unnatural, I said, there's something about him. Don't think
• 3:44
Speaker 1: me fanciful, but it gives me a nasty little sensation,
• 3:49
Speaker 1: a tightening of my muscles when he comes near me.
• 3:53
Speaker 1: It's a touch of the diabolical. In fact, Montgomery had
• 4:00
Speaker 1: stopped eating while I told him this rum. He said,
• 4:06
Speaker 1: I can't see it. He resumed his meal. I had
• 4:10
Speaker 1: no idea of it, he said, and masticated. The crew
• 4:15
Speaker 1: of the schooner must have felt it. The fame made
• 4:18
Speaker 1: a dead fete at the poor devil, you saw the captain.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: Suddenly the puma howled again, this time more painfully. Montgomery
• 4:29
Speaker 1: swore under his breath, I had half a mind to
• 4:33
Speaker 1: attack him. About the men on the beach, and the
• 4:36
Speaker 1: poor brute within gave vent to a series of short,
• 4:40
Speaker 1: sharp cries. Your men on the beach, said I what
• 4:46
Speaker 1: race are they? Excellent fellows? Tha'n't they said, He absent
• 4:51
Speaker 1: mindedly knitting his brows as the animal yelled out sharply.
• 4:57
Speaker 1: I said, no more was another outcry, worse than the former.
• 5:03
Speaker 1: He looked at me with his dull gray eyes, and
• 5:06
Speaker 1: then took some more whiskey. He tried to draw me
• 5:10
Speaker 1: into a discussion about alcohol, professing to have saved my
• 5:14
Speaker 1: life with it. He seemed anxious to lay stress on
• 5:18
Speaker 1: the fact that I owed my life to him. I
• 5:21
Speaker 1: answered him distractedly. Presently our meal came to an end.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: The misshapen monster, with the point of years, cleared the
• 5:30
Speaker 1: remains away, and Montgomery left me alone in the room again.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: All the time he had been in a state of
• 5:37
Speaker 1: ill concealed irritation at the noise of the vivisected puma.
• 5:42
Speaker 1: He had spoken of his odd want of nerve, and
• 5:45
Speaker 1: left me to the obvious application. I found myself that
• 5:50
Speaker 1: the cries were singularly irritating, and it grew in depth
• 5:54
Speaker 1: and intensity as the afternoon wore on. They were pained
• 6:00
Speaker 1: meaningful at first, but their constant resurgence at last altogether
• 6:05
Speaker 1: upset my balance. I flung aside a crib of horrors
• 6:10
Speaker 1: I had been reading, and began to clinch my fists,
• 6:13
Speaker 1: to bite my lips, and to pace the room. Presently
• 6:18
Speaker 1: I got to stopping my ears with my fingers. The
• 6:23
Speaker 1: emotional appeal of those yells grew upon me steadily, grew
• 6:27
Speaker 1: at last to such an exquisite expression of suffering that
• 6:31
Speaker 1: I could stand it in that confined room no longer.
• 6:35
Speaker 1: I stepped out of the door into the slumberous heat
• 6:38
Speaker 1: of the late afternoon, and walking past the main entrance,
• 6:42
Speaker 1: locked again, I noticed turned the corner of the wall,
• 6:48
Speaker 1: the crying sounded even louder out of doors. It was
• 6:52
Speaker 1: as if all the pain in the world had found
• 6:55
Speaker 1: a voice. Yet, had I known such pain was in
• 6:59
Speaker 1: the next room, and had it been dumb, I believe
• 7:04
Speaker 1: I have thought, since I could have stood it well enough.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: It is when suffering finds a voice and sets our
• 7:13
Speaker 1: nerves quivering that this pity comes troubling us. But in
• 7:18
Speaker 1: spite of the brilliant sunlight and the green fans of
• 7:21
Speaker 1: the trees waving in the soothing sea breeze, the world
• 7:26
Speaker 1: was a confusion, blurred with drifting black and red phantasms.
• 7:32
Speaker 1: Until I was out of earshot of the house, in
• 7:35
  Speaker 1: the checkered wall
