- 0:36Oh, so much to look forward to. But that's next week.
- 0:39This week we are going to sit down with Paul as the Holy
- 0:43Spirit uses him to communicate these profound truths, truths
- 0:47about his Kingdom and about what Jesus has won for us, sharing
- 0:52that with his community. So let us dive in head first,
- 0:56Holy Spirit, open up our hearts so that we can hear Your truth
- 1:02shared with us from you today. Let's do it friends.
- 1:07Let's read together. Romans Chapter 11.
- 1:19I ask then, has God rejected his own people, the nation of
- 1:23Israel? Of course not.
- 1:26I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a
- 1:30member of the tribe of Benjamin. No, God has not rejected His own
- 1:34people, whom He chose from the very beginning.
- 1:37Do you realise what the Scriptures say about this?
- 1:40Elijah the prophet complained to God about the people of Israel
- 1:43and said, Lord, they've killed your prophets and torn down your
- 1:48altars. I'm the only one left and now
- 1:50they're trying to kill me too. And do you remember God's reply?
- 1:55He said no, I have 7000 others who have never bowed down to
- 2:01bow. It is the same today, for a few
- 2:05of the people of Israel have remained faithful because of
- 2:08God's grace, his undeserved kindness in choosing them.
- 2:13And since it is through God's kindness, then it is not by
- 2:17their good works, for in that case God's grace would not be
- 2:22what it really is, free and undeserved.
- 2:26So this is a situation most of the people of Israel have not
- 2:30found the favour of God they are looking for so earnestly.
- 2:34A few have the ones God has chosen, but the hearts of the
- 2:38rest were hardened. As the Scriptures say.
- 2:42God has put them into a deep sleep to this day.
- 2:45He has shut their eyes so they do not see and close their ears
- 2:50so they do not hear. Likewise, David said, let their
- 2:55bountiful table become a snare, a trap that makes them think all
- 3:00is well. Let their blessings cause them
- 3:02to stumble and let them get what they deserve.
- 3:06Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and let their backs
- 3:10be bent forever. Did God's people stumble and
- 3:15fall beyond recovery? Of course not.
- 3:19They were disobedient. So God made salvation available
- 3:22to the Gentiles, but He wanted all his own people to become
- 3:27jealous and claim it for themselves.
- 3:29Now, if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of
- 3:32Israel turned down God's offer of salvation, think how much
- 3:36greater a blessing the world will share when they finally
- 3:40accept it. I'm saying all this especially
- 3:45for you Gentiles. God has appointed me as the
- 3:48apostle to the Gentiles. I stress this, for I want
- 3:52somehow to make the people of Israel jealous of what you
- 3:56Gentiles have, so I might save some of them.
- 4:00For since their rejection meant that God offered salvation to
- 4:03the rest of the world, their acceptance will be even more
- 4:07wonderful. It will be life for those who
- 4:10are dead. And since Abraham and the other
- 4:13patriarchs were holy, their descendants will also be holy,
- 4:17Just as the entire batch of dough is holy, because the
- 4:21portion given as an offering is holy.
- 4:24For if the roots of the tree are holy, the branches will be too.
- 4:30But some of these branches from Abraham's tree, some of the
- 4:33people of Israel, have been broken off.
- 4:36And you, Gentiles who were branches from a wild olive tree
- 4:40have been grafted in. So now you also received the
- 4:44blessing God has promised Abraham and his children,
- 4:47sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God's special
- 4:51olive tree. But you must not brag about
- 4:55being grafted in to replace the branches that were broken off.
- 4:59You are just a branch, not the root.
- 5:02Well, you may say those branches are broken off to make room for
- 5:05me. Yes, But remember, those
- 5:09branches are broken off because they didn't believe in Christ,
- 5:12and you are there because you do believe.
- 5:15So don't think highly of yourself, but fear what could
- 5:18happen. For if God did not spare the
- 5:21original branches, He won't spare you either.
- 5:25Notice how God is both kind and severe.
- 5:28He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if
- 5:33you continue to trust in His kindness.
- 5:36But if you stop trusting, you will also be cut off.
- 5:40And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will
- 5:43be grafted in again, for God is the power to graft them back
- 5:47into the tree. You by nature were a branch cut
- 5:51from a wild olive tree, so if God was willing to do something
- 5:55contrary to nature by grafting you into this cultivated tree,
- 5:59He will be far more eager to graft the original branches back
- 6:03into the tree where they belong. I want you to understand this
- 6:09mystery, dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not
- 6:12feel proud about yourselves. Some of the people of Israel
- 6:15have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number
- 6:20of Gentiles comes to Christ. And so all Israel will be saved,
- 6:25as the Scriptures say. The one who rescues will come
- 6:29from Jerusalem, and he will turn Israel away from ungodliness.
- 6:34And this is my covenant with them, that I will take away
- 6:38their sins. Many of the people of Israel are
- 6:42now enemies of the good news, but this benefits you Gentiles.
- 6:48Yet they are still the people He loves, because He chose their
- 6:51ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob for God's gift, and His
- 6:56call can never be withdrawn. Once you Gentiles were rebels
- 7:00against God, but when the people of Israel rebelled against Him,
- 7:04God was merciful to you instead. Now they are the rebels, and
- 7:09God's mercy has come to you so that they too will share in
- 7:13God's mercy. For God has imprisoned everyone
- 7:17in disobedience so He could have mercy on everyone.
- 7:21Oh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge.
- 7:26How impossible it is for us to understand His decisions and His
- 7:31ways. For who can know the Lord's
- 7:34thoughts? Who knows enough to give him
- 7:36advice? And who has given Him so much
- 7:40that he needs to pay it back? For everything comes from Him
- 7:45and exists by His power and is intended for His glory.
- 7:51All glory to Him forever. Amen.
- 8:05Oh Jesus, you are steadfast and true and truly unchanging.
- 8:11Here in this reading we hear about your promises.
- 8:14Generations before that, Israel would always be your people.
- 8:19And even though they turned their backs on you and walked
- 8:22away from you time and time again, and even though they
- 8:26rejected you as their Saviour, you continued to be for them,
- 8:33doing whatever you could to draw them back to you.
- 8:36You are a faithful and good God. And when you make a promise, you
- 8:41keep it for generations and generations stretching into the
- 8:45future. So, Jesus, we just claim the
- 8:48promises that you have made for us, promises that we are in you
- 8:55and in your love made whole again.
- 8:58And you're promised that no matter how corrupted or broken
- 9:01we are, it's in you that we can always find our wholeness, and
- 9:09that when we stand before our Father, there you are, standing
- 9:14with us, your perfection covering us.
- 9:19Oh, you're a good God. You are a faithful God.
- 9:23And we thank you for your love and your goodness to us.
- 9:26And we pray all of this through your precious saving name,
- 9:29Jesus. Amen.
