- 0:00I'm Taylor and I'm Tyler. Today will be Alma 39 through
- 0:0542. Look at the contrast of where
- 0:08we've been. We had chapters 36 and 30.
- 0:13Seven were given to Heelman, who was the son of Alma.
- 0:17Who's going to be the next prophet in?
- 0:20Charge of the records and in charge of.
- 0:21Teaching and leading the people as a high priest.
- 0:24And then you had chapter. 38. Given to Shiblon, this son who
- 0:30maybe? He's a little overzealous.
- 0:32He's. Excited and he's told by his
- 0:35father, use boldness but not overbearance and bridle all your
- 0:38passions, all of that stuff. And then you got 39 through 42
- 0:45for this third son, Corry, Anton.
- 0:50Notice 4, Chapters 1. Chapter 2.
- 0:53Chapters. It's almost as if Alma is
- 0:58spending more time, double the time compared to with Helaman
- 1:04with his son Coriantin. Who is?
- 1:07Struggling. Now, what makes Coriantin's
- 1:11struggles here more significant is.
- 1:13The fact that. He's serving a mission.
- 1:17With his dad, his brother. Amulexiazram Others and Alma
- 1:23here tells him in verse two that he went unto much boasting in
- 1:27his strength and his wisdom, and then he forsook the ministry in
- 1:32verse three and went over into the land of the Siren among the
- 1:35borders of the Lamanites. After the harlot Isabel.
- 1:39So I just want to share a possible insight about this that
- 1:43may be tied into the story of Isabel, with whom he should not
- 1:48have been having any interactions at all.
- 1:51Alma has said this is verse three of Alma 39.
- 1:54And this is not all, my son. Thou didst do that which was
- 1:58grievous unto me. For thou didst forsake the
- 2:01ministry and did go over into the land of Cyron among the
- 2:06borders of the Lamanites, after the harlot Isabel.
- 2:10Yeah, she did steal away the hearts of many.
- 2:13But this was no excuse for thee, my son.
- 2:15Thou should have subtended to the ministry wherewith thou was
- 2:19entrusted. What I'm going to share here is
- 2:22probably a bit of a speculation. It's something I wonder about,
- 2:25but I think it's interesting that we have this name here.
- 2:29And I think there's a connection to Corianthin's misunderstanding
- 2:35around the principle of resurrection and the power of
- 2:39God or the power of Jehovah. So the name Isabel in Hebrew it
- 2:44may come from 2 words, the word Baal which in Hebrew can mean
- 2:51the ancient Canaanite false God of Baal.
- 2:55In some instances it actually means Lord or even husband, but
- 3:00in this instance it actually might refer to this false God
- 3:04Baal and Isha or Isa means woman or wife.
- 3:10And the full reading would be Isha, Baal.
- 3:13And as it gets shortened, it becomes Isa bell.
- 3:17So the word Isabel may then mean wife of Baal.
- 3:23And if that is true, if that's what the name means in the
- 3:27ancient world, in the ancient Israelite times, the Israelites
- 3:32sometimes found themselves LED away by Baal.
- 3:35You might remember Elijah spending a lot of time preaching
- 3:38to the people, and he was contending with them or
- 3:42contesting with the priests of Baal who were teaching people to
- 3:46follow after this false Canaanite or Phoenician God.
- 3:50And let me share a little further.
- 3:52There seems to be some indication that for the ancient
- 3:54Canaanites, Baal was the God of restoration and resurrection.
- 4:01Back in the Middle East, there were kind of two major seasons,
- 4:05a rainy season that brought fertility to the world and life
- 4:08abounded, and the dry season where everything was dead.
- 4:11And in that cycle, during the dry season, the ancient
- 4:15Canaanites believed the Baal had died and that they had to engage
- 4:20in these rituals to bring him back, to bring fertility to the
- 4:23world. And by doing these actions, it
- 4:25would bring resurrection and restoration because that's what
- 4:29he would bring. And that there was these cycles
- 4:31that go along. And what's interesting is what
- 4:32Alma says. It's like Corrie Anton, because
- 4:34of your actions, people wouldn't believe my message.
- 4:37Now definitely, if you are not keeping the commandments, people
- 4:39are going to have a hard time trusting the truth of your
- 4:42message. But what if a missionary
- 4:45abandons the religion that he's teaching, right, the truth, and
- 4:50actually engages in false religion, publicly engaging in
- 4:54the false rituals of a false religion.
- 4:57That would make it really hard for anyone to say, well,
- 5:00obviously to believe his message of truth.
- 5:04And so I wonder if in the message that Alma is sharing,
- 5:08that Cory Anton has got himself confused and been LED away by
- 5:13false religion and false damaging practices, Alma, as a
- 5:20good and tender father, is taking the time to correct his
- 5:24son. In some ways, that's a symbol of
- 5:27God the Father and all of us. Who among us hasn't in some ways
- 5:32made a mistake? Maybe not quite like what Corrie
- 5:35Anton has done, but all of us have fallen.
- 5:38All of us have from time to time abandoned what we knew to be
- 5:42true, maybe even just for a few moments.
- 5:45That is what it means to have a fallen nature.
- 5:48But like Alma the Younger, the tender Father, we have God the
- 5:51Father who is willing to teach us again and remind us and plead
- 5:56with us and encourage us and put out his outstretched arms to say
- 6:01the arms of mercy are here to envelope you in the love of God
- 6:04once again. And no matter what we've done,
- 6:08we can repent and return to God. And that's one of the beautiful
- 6:12messages repeated throughout the Book of Mormon and is the center
- 6:15point of what's going on in these chapters of Alma 39 to 42.
- 6:20But we can have hope. Now what makes this so difficult
- 6:25is the fact that Alma is his father.
- 6:29Alma is Koryanson's. Priesthood leader, his mission
- 6:33president. And he's also the prophet.
- 6:35Over all the church. And here's his own son who's
- 6:39going and having these. Struggles.
- 6:42He's going to give Koryanson. A whole series of teachings.
- 6:47Later on. But first, notice a pattern
- 6:51here. Notice that in chapter 39 you're
- 6:54going to get verse one through 2.
- 6:59He's he's going to set. Up this idea of how.
- 7:03Corrianson could have prevented the sin.
- 7:07So. He's giving him what could have
- 7:09been his preventative measures. Which, by the way.
- 7:13Are to point him forward into the future temptations that
- 7:16he'll face. Follow these SO.
- 7:18You don't get into the temptations then you'll notice.
- 7:22Verse 5 through 8 he's. Focusing Corryanson on the
- 7:28serious nature of the sins that he's committed.
- 7:32Then verse 9 through 14, he's going to give him verbs and
- 7:40steps and helps. For how to.
- 7:43Repent. How to make this right?
- 7:45How to turn back towards the right?
- 7:49And then verse 15 through 19, he's going to be focusing Cori
- 7:55Anson on the solution. To the problem because you.
- 7:59Can't repent, you can't do any. You can't take any steps forward
- 8:02on your own. So he's going to be pointing him
- 8:05to Christ. You've got these problems,
- 8:08serious sins issues. Cori Anson Well.
- 8:12Jesus Christ is always. The answer We're going nowhere
- 8:16that matters in our repentance process or in our life without
- 8:20Him and without His help. Now notice that He had to help
- 8:25His son see the need to repent. Before he could talk about the.
- 8:32Solution. Hence you'll notice an
- 8:34interesting pattern here. You didn't have to do this.
- 8:37Corey Anson. What you did was very serious.
- 8:40He had to. Remind him of that serious
- 8:43nature. Can you imagine what General
- 8:45Conference would be like if the apostles and prophets and
- 8:48leaders of our church got up and the entire time?
- 8:51They're just talking about the. Seriousness of sin versus What
- 8:55would it be if the pendulum swing is on the other side?
- 8:59What if they spent 100% of their time talking about the solution
- 9:03and just about Christ and never talking about how it it really
- 9:08doesn't matter what you do, it's not that serious.
- 9:11So you can see the struggle trying to keep the balance
- 9:15between the serious nature of sin and the hope that we have in
- 9:21Christ and our ability to to repent and be forgiven.
- 9:25So here's this father. Alma the younger, who, by the
- 9:29way, knows some things about committing serious sins.
- 9:33Now he has his son in some very difficult settings and
- 9:38situations and he's working with him to bring him back to the
- 9:43covenant path. Notice one of the the issues
- 9:48that he mentions here in the middle of the repentance is this
- 9:53is a repeat of the serious nature.
- 9:54Look up. Verse 11 Suffer not yourself to
- 9:57be LED away by any vain or foolish thing.
- 10:00Suffer not the devil. To lead away your heart.
- 10:02Again after those wicked harlots, behold, O my son, how
- 10:06great iniquity you brought upon the Zoramites, for when they saw
- 10:10your conduct, they would not believe in my words.
- 10:15Brothers and sisters, whether we like.
- 10:17It or not, people are going to. Judge the Church of Jesus Christ
- 10:22by the behavior of. Its members.
- 10:24That may be a misplaced judgement, but it is the.
- 10:28Way the world. Often ends up making their their
- 10:32decisions on, on and and their judgments on the church is by
- 10:36its members. Now let me give you a little
- 10:38scenario to put this into context.
- 10:41Would it be appropriate for us? To go into a second grade
- 10:44classroom with a whole bunch of students working on math
- 10:48problems. And would it be?
- 10:50Appropriate for us to walk. Up and down those aisles and
- 10:53look at all of those math worksheets and see all the
- 10:56mistakes those students are making and walk out of that
- 11:00classroom and and come together and say, you know what math is.
- 11:06Bad. Math is broken.
- 11:08Math doesn't. Work.
- 11:09Did you see what? We saw in there.
- 11:12That would be a. Really silly conclusion.
- 11:14To draw, but here's the. Point math is not broken.
- 11:19Math is not bad because students.
- 11:23Struggle to perfectly apply the. Mathematical principles, They've
- 11:27been taught the thing that's broken.
- 11:30Is the. Application of correct
- 11:32principles, not the principles. The Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 11:38The Church of Jesus Christ. Are not broken because members.
- 11:43Have a hard. Time applying principles that
- 11:46they learn from the gospel or in church at times faced with
- 11:51certain temptations. The struggle isn't with the
- 11:54organization or the teachings, it's with us.
- 11:59Here's the problem. If people are are judging the
- 12:03church. By its members inability to
- 12:07apply principles that they've learned, then it's all the more
- 12:11reason. For us to to work.
- 12:15On learning those principles, implementing those principles
- 12:20and teaching those principles to others, not in a sense of look
- 12:25at me, I'm perfect at living them, but saying I'm struggling
- 12:29with some of these gospel principles.
- 12:32But the. Gospel principles are pure.
- 12:34Here's Corey Anson, who was clearly struggling and his
- 12:38father was saying, look, people aren't even believing my words
- 12:42because of your conduct. We could do a better job
- 12:45collectively of helping people. Understand the difference
- 12:48between. Our lack of.
- 12:51Application and the powerful God-given principles or
- 12:56standards, just like a mathematical formula.
- 13:00For us to follow. That those.
- 13:03Are pure and those are. Good.
- 13:05And we're going to see that come up in the rest.
- 13:07Of the story Elder. Jeffrey R Holland, many years
- 13:10ago at BYU, gave a speech. Where he talked about the fact.
- 13:18That sometimes when somebody's struggling, we can do things
- 13:23that make their struggle even worse.
- 13:25Listen to this This is from his BYU devotional in 1980.
- 13:29Four called a robe. A ring and a.
- 13:32Fatted calf quote. When a battered, weary swimmer
- 13:37tries valiantly to get back. To shore after having.
- 13:40Fought strong winds and rough waves which he should have never
- 13:44challenged in the first. Place those of.
- 13:47Us who might have had better judgement or.
- 13:49Perhaps just better luck ought. Not.
- 13:51To row out to his side. Beat him with our.
- 13:55Oars. And shove his head back.
- 13:57Underwater, that's. Not what boats were made for,
- 14:01but some of us. Do that to each other.
- 14:03The principal here is. Corey Anton got in over.
- 14:07His head he's. Drowning out there.
- 14:10He's. Struggling and I love the fact
- 14:12that his. Father that also double.
- 14:14S in this instances. As his priesthood leader.
- 14:17Symbolically gets into a. Rowboat rows out to this.
- 14:21Struggling boy and says son get in the boat.
- 14:25Let me help you understand some things.
- 14:28About life, About struggles. And sin and repentance and.
- 14:33Christ so. Now you're going to notice that
- 14:36after one chapter of kind of setting the stage, he's now
- 14:40going to spend 3 chapters teaching doctrine, clarifying
- 14:45misunderstandings, and helping this son who is struggling way
- 14:51more than his two brothers. Consequently, he's going to get
- 14:53way more time from his. Father, that's a beautiful,
- 14:57beautiful. Principle for us to consider.
- 15:00That perhaps the people, the the parts.
- 15:03Of your family or the. Parts of your.
- 15:06Congregation that need the most time are the parts that are the
- 15:09most broken, the parts that are the most hurting and need the
- 15:13most care and attention. So we begin this next part in
- 15:17Chapter 40. Notice.
- 15:19There's a. Pattern in chapter 40 verse one,
- 15:23chapter 41 verse one and chapter 42 verse one, there's a repeat
- 15:30the concept that gets. Repeated is he refers to.
- 15:33Him as my son and. I perceive.
- 15:41That that appears in all. Three of these these verse.
- 15:46One of these three chapters, my son, I perceive.
- 15:52You'll notice his son struggling.
- 15:54How that must have been a bit of a soothing, healing salve to the
- 16:00soul of his son. To hear his dad 3.
- 16:03Times refer to him, my son, my son, my son and I.
- 16:08Perceive. I perceive, I perceive.
- 16:11His dad's not preaching at him. His dad is.
- 16:15Perceiving what his. Struggles what his.
- 16:18Questions and concerns are and he's addressing those.
- 16:21It's a. Pretty good formula.
- 16:23Pretty good. Pattern for us to follow.
- 16:27In our teaching and in our parenting.
- 16:29Notice how this begins in. Chapter 40 What is the first
- 16:33thing that he. Perceives verse one.
- 16:36I perceive that thy mind is worried concerning the
- 16:40resurrection. Of the dead.
- 16:43Corry Anton isn't the first one to be concerned about and to
- 16:46worry. About the resurrection of the
- 16:49dead. And I'd like to tell a personal
- 16:51story about the power of resurrection.
- 16:53This comes from my wife, Lisa. So when Lisa was about 20 in
- 16:58college, she noticed she was starting to lose her hearing and
- 17:02she ended up getting hearing aids.
- 17:03And over the years, Lisa's hearing has gotten worse and
- 17:07worse. And so she just got better and
- 17:09better hearing aids. Well, unfortunately, a couple
- 17:11years ago, she woke up one morning and all the hearing was
- 17:15gone in her left ear. All of it.
- 17:17And despite lots of interventions, prayer and
- 17:20fasting, nothing brought it back.
- 17:22And it was extremely distressing to think I'm going to spend the
- 17:25rest of my life with only one ear, which itself has low
- 17:28hearing, which is helped a bit by hearing aids.
- 17:31She concluded to get a pretty invasive surgery called a
- 17:34cochlear implant. It's basically they cut into
- 17:37your skull and insert a little computer and connect it to your
- 17:39ear so you can can actually gain some hearing back.
- 17:42The cochlear implant, it's a bit of a difficult surgery.
- 17:47It's painful. There's kind of a long recovery
- 17:49time. And then they can take many,
- 17:52many months of rehabilitation to actually make use of that little
- 17:56computer that's not been put into your head.
- 17:58And for my wife, she was one of the rare individuals where the
- 18:02sound did not sound normal. All the voices sounded like
- 18:06cyborgs or Darth Vader. So she couldn't out of one ear
- 18:10tell the difference between my voice or our kids voices.
- 18:12And that was distressing to her because she thought, I really
- 18:15hope I don't lose the natural hearing, though compromised in
- 18:18my right ear. Well, unfortunately that did
- 18:22happen. My wife and I take travel groups
- 18:24to different places around the world, the Holy Land.
- 18:26We were taking a tour group to India.
- 18:28The day we were leaving, she woke up and all the hearing was
- 18:31gone out of her right ear. Well, we thought maybe it's just
- 18:33water in your ear from, I don't know, a shower or something.
- 18:37We, we flew all the way to India with all these people got to New
- 18:41Delhi. It wasn't better.
- 18:42And while we're trying to manage all these people on the airport
- 18:45and get them launch of this trip we were leaving, I was also
- 18:48trying to frantically on Google find somebody in New Delhi who
- 18:52could could help. We found this man who stayed
- 18:55late at his office till midnight, an audiologist.
- 18:58He spent time with us and concluded what we had feared.
- 19:02She'd lost all of her hearing. And at that point, we really
- 19:05didn't have very good options. We decided to send my wife home
- 19:08and I continued the trip with these 60 people all on my own.
- 19:10And my wife did the aggressive treatments and was able to bring
- 19:14back some of the hearing in her right ear.
- 19:16Well, a few months later my wife actually dealt with another
- 19:20health issue trying to fix bunions on her feet where the
- 19:23toes kind of curve in on themselves and make it difficult
- 19:25to walk and paint and make it painful.
- 19:28She got a bunions her her foot operated on.
- 19:31And in the follow up a few weeks later the day we went in for the
- 19:35follow up, two bad medical things happened.
- 19:38First, all of her hearing went out again on her rider,
- 19:41completely gone, and we discovered that the foot that
- 19:45had been operated on wasn't healing properly.
- 19:48That resulted in ultimately seven or eight additional foot
- 19:52surgeries. She basically was in bed for
- 19:54four or five months, couldn't drive a car, and at the same
- 19:57time she couldn't do any treatments on her ear because of
- 20:00the situation with her foot. And it's just this real loss for
- 20:05her that ultimately for her to realize I've lost all my hearing
- 20:08totally and completely in both ears.
- 20:11We found ourselves in this moment of like facing the
- 20:14reality of life that our bodies fall apart.
- 20:18We'd actually planned another trip to lead a tour group
- 20:21through China of about 160 people.
- 20:23She didn't get to go because of her foot issue and the hearing
- 20:26problems. So I did that on my own.
- 20:28And it's interesting. While I was away, she called
- 20:31upon our brother-in-law who lives nearby to give her a
- 20:33blessing of comfort and healing. And in that powerful experience
- 20:39where she felt the Spirit, and after my brother-in-law left,
- 20:43she spent some time with God, in some ways almost like Hannah at
- 20:47the temple, pleading with God, talking to him.
- 20:50And my wife shared that in that powerful moment of aloneness, or
- 20:55more specifically of quiet alone with God, she felt the
- 21:00reassuring power of the Spirit confirming to her that
- 21:04resurrection is real. She had wondered about that for
- 21:08a long time, hoped, but wondered like, is it real?
- 21:12What's the assurance? I believe it.
- 21:14I know it's in scriptures, but what is the assurance?
- 21:17And the Spirit came to her fully and powerfully and confirmed to
- 21:21her that in a future day her body will return to full
- 21:26restoration and full perfection through the power of Jesus
- 21:30Christ. And I remember getting the note
- 21:32from her, an e-mail about this beautiful experience.
- 21:36And I asked her if he'd be OK with me.
- 21:38For me to share this with you today to reassure all of us that
- 21:42in a future day, just as Alma taught and just as my wife has
- 21:46learned through the Spirit, we will all be restored and
- 21:49resurrected because of Jesus Christ and His resurrection.
- 21:53You'll notice. Here that there are.
- 21:57Lots and lots and lots of questions.
- 22:01That we have about resurrection Chapter 40 is filled.
- 22:07With uncertainty regarding certain aspects of the
- 22:11resurrection and Alma tells his son Corinthian over and over.
- 22:14Watch. For it in chapter 40 things
- 22:17where he'll say. I don't know.
- 22:19I give it as my opinion. This hasn't been revealed yet.
- 22:23There are lots of questions in Alma's mind, and some of those
- 22:28have been. Resolved through through.
- 22:30Joseph Smith and Restoration Scripture in the Doctrine and
- 22:34Covenants, but you'll notice what Alma.
- 22:36Does he shows a pattern? When you have questions about
- 22:41things, you go. Back to what you absolutely.
- 22:44Know. And he's doing this over and
- 22:47over again. With regards to his.
- 22:50Questions his concerns about the resurrection.
- 22:53Go over to verse. 10 And when the time cometh, when all shall
- 22:57rise, then shall they know that God knoweth all the times which
- 23:02were appointed unto man. It's like, even though we don't
- 23:04know all these things, God knows.
- 23:06Look at verse 11 now concerning the state of the soul between
- 23:10death and the resurrection. Behold, it has been made known
- 23:13unto me by an Angel. That the spirits of all.
- 23:15Men, that's 100% as soon as they are departed from this mortal
- 23:20body. Yeah, the spirits.
- 23:21Of all men, whether? They be good or evil.
- 23:24Are taken home to that God who gave them life.
- 23:28This raises a whole. Bunch of questions for us all,
- 23:32men and women, as soon as they're dead or taken home to
- 23:36that God who gave them life notice.
- 23:38The word. State starting in verse 11.
- 23:42You could just in your scriptures mark every time you
- 23:44see. The word state or.
- 23:45At least notice the word state and what it implies.
- 23:49It comes up three times in verse 12.
- 23:52You're going to see it multiple times in verse 14 and 15 and
- 23:55he's describing. These states of.
- 23:57Being that people enter into. In verse 12, he refers to Spirit
- 24:02paradise. A state of happiness which is
- 24:04called. Paradise, a state of rest.
- 24:07A state of peace, in other words, tests mortal struggles.
- 24:13They're not intended. To last forever.
- 24:16They're a. Temporal thing that's going to
- 24:19pass and then we enter into a different.
- 24:22State a state of rest. But notice he then.
- 24:24Describes those who have chosen evil.
- 24:27Look at verse. 14 now this. Is the state of the souls of
- 24:31the. Wicked.
- 24:32Yeah. In darkness, in a state of.
- 24:34Awful fearful looking for the. Fire, indignation of the wrath
- 24:37of God upon them. Thus they remain in this state.
- 24:41As well as the righteous. In Paradise until the time of
- 24:44the resurrection. So he's talking about this
- 24:46period from when you die until the time that you're.
- 24:49Resurrected what's? Happening and he's describing.
- 24:52These various. States of being that people are
- 24:55going to find themselves in. When I was younger I got in a
- 25:01argument with my sister and she started running.
- 25:04Towards the house I picked. Up a rock and threw it at her
- 25:06and I missed her but I didn't miss the window.
- 25:10A very large. Beautiful window in our home and
- 25:14put a a big hole in that window. Mom and dad weren't home at the
- 25:18time. Guess where I went?
- 25:21I went to my room, I crawled under my bed and I stayed there
- 25:27until I heard the car come home and the.
- 25:30Garage door go. Up and I knew I was in trouble
- 25:33in a little child. 'S.
- 25:36Perspective Alma's teaching the same principle in a.
- 25:39Really big way. Gratefully, my parents didn't
- 25:43disown me and banish me forever in that context and.
- 25:48There is great hope. Great.
- 25:51Redemption for repairing broken windows.
- 25:55And shattered lives as well. At a much bigger level.
- 25:59So as you're reading through 40. Just pay attention to what he
- 26:05doesn't know and where. He says I give.
- 26:07It as my opinion, contrasted. With what he does.
- 26:11Know, and what he's absolutely certain of.
- 26:15That we're all. Going to get this opportunity.
- 26:18To be brought. Into the presence of God and to
- 26:22find redemption and to be. Restored through a glorious
- 26:27resurrection. Now, chapter 41, he's finished
- 26:31his discussion of resurrection. Now he refers to the law of the.
- 26:37Harvest is what we would call it today.
- 26:40It's the. Plan of restoration.
- 26:43Notice what he perceives in 41. Verse one.
- 26:46I perceive that I might just been worried concerning this
- 26:48thing. Verse two.
- 26:50I say unto thee, my son, that the plan of restoration is
- 26:55requisite. With the justice of God.
- 26:58He's going to describe some things going on in in a kind of
- 27:05an analogy that I would use here to make more sense of this would
- 27:08be a. Simple garden.
- 27:10You can't go and plant tomato seeds in the spring and expect
- 27:14to pick corn from those plants in the fall.
- 27:18You can't plant weeds and expect to pick vegetables in the fall.
- 27:24The Law of the. Harvest is you reap what you
- 27:28sow. Whatever you put into the
- 27:30ground, you're going to get back someday.
- 27:34And so chapter 41 is filled with this concept of restoration,
- 27:40bringing things back. Look at verse 7.
- 27:43These are they that are. Redeemed of the Lord, yeah.
- 27:46These are they that are. Taken out that are delivered
- 27:49from that endless night of darkness, and thus they stand or
- 27:53fall. For behold, they are their.
- 27:55Own judges whether to do. Good or to do evil?
- 28:00Brothers and sisters, the garden plot is a symbol for mortality,
- 28:05and I have at my disposal all kinds of seeds that I can put
- 28:10into my life, into my life's. Plot.
- 28:14Nobody's forcing me to plant certain kinds of fruits and
- 28:17vegetables or grains. I can throw out weeds.
- 28:20Or I can ignore it and let the weeds grow spontaneously.
- 28:24I am my own. Judge.
- 28:27I get to judge. I get to decide.
- 28:29Isn't that interesting? That God says.
- 28:32They are their own judges through Almahair.
- 28:36Because the reality is, is there will be a day.
- 28:40When we will no longer get to be our own judge.
- 28:44When Christ will now judge us? According to our.
- 28:48Deeds and on that day, it's not the day to be planting, that's
- 28:53the day. Where we reap what we've.
- 28:56Sown through life and he's trying to help his son Alma's
- 29:00trying to help Koreans in here understand that verse 8 now the
- 29:04decrees of God are unalterable. Therefore the way is.
- 29:09Prepared, that whosoever will may.
- 29:12Walk therein and. Be saved, you get to.
- 29:15Choose Koreans and I'm not. Forcing you to be good.
- 29:18I'm not forcing you to come back to the to the covenant path and
- 29:23to move forward. I'm helping you understand that
- 29:26you can keep planting those seeds of being boastful and
- 29:31prideful and going. After the heart of Isabel.
- 29:33But that doesn't. Produce good fruit.
- 29:36Look at verse 10. Do not suppose, because it has
- 29:39been spoken concerning restoration, that ye shall be
- 29:41restored from sin to happiness. Behold, I say unto you,
- 29:46wickedness never was happiness. One of the most quoted verses of
- 29:50the entire Book of Mormon coming from a guy Alma, who knew an
- 29:54awful lot about wickedness in his earlier years and he's
- 29:58saying to his son Corry Anton. Oh, don't think that these
- 30:03thrills of the the carnal, central, devilish fallen nature
- 30:07that we've inherited don't think that if you.
- 30:10Feed those or. Plant those kinds of seeds that
- 30:14that's going to lead to happiness, because it doesn't.
- 30:17It leads to ruin. It leads to sorrow and misery
- 30:20and despair, and to a state not of peace, not of happiness or
- 30:26paradise. And so he's describing the.
- 30:29Fact that verse. 11 Now, my son, all men that are in a state of
- 30:35nature, or I would say in a carnal state, or in the gall of
- 30:38bitterness, or in the bonds of iniquity.
- 30:40They are without God. In the world and they have gone
- 30:44contrary to the nature. Of God.
- 30:47Therefore they are in a state contrary to the nature of
- 30:51happiness. So you get these two.
- 30:53Competing elements, the natural man and the natural woman and
- 31:00the nature of God. We have the spirit children of
- 31:04God aspect in our makeup. It's trying to be good, but
- 31:10sometimes that natural side can overpower and hence the need.
- 31:17For us to get. Back onto the covenant path and
- 31:20notice. Look at verse. 14 Therefore, my
- 31:23son, see that you are merciful unto your brethren.
- 31:26Deal justly, judge righteously. And do good continually.
- 31:30And if you do all these things, then shall.
- 31:32You receive your reward. You shall have mercy restored
- 31:35unto you again. You shall have justice restored.
- 31:38Unto you again you shall. Have a righteous judgment
- 31:40restored. Unto you again, and you.
- 31:42Shall have good rewarded. Unto you again.
- 31:44You judge righteously. You.
- 31:46You. Extend Mercy and all of.
- 31:48Those are seeds that you're. Putting in the ground.
- 31:50They will bear fruit. Eternally for you one day, and
- 31:54now he. Gets to chapter 42 where he
- 31:57describes some. Pretty profound and deep
- 32:02doctrines regarding the plan of redemption.
- 32:05And you'll notice how often he uses these ideas of plan, plan
- 32:10of salvation and plan of redemption, plan of happiness.
- 32:13Back in verse 8, verse 15, plan of mercy and plan of mercy is
- 32:17repeated. Just look for plan and it even
- 32:21ends in verse 31, very, very end that the great plan of mercy may
- 32:25have claim upon them. This is the plan.
- 32:31Of. Salvation plan of happiness.
- 32:33Plan of redemption. Plan of mercy.
- 32:34Chapter that that. Mentions that more than any
- 32:37other in all of. Scripture is chapter 42.
- 32:40And to sum it up, the simplest way to.
- 32:44Describe this. Is this?
- 32:46Contrast between God's mercy and God's justice.
- 32:51Now notice the perception in. Chapter 42 Verse.
- 32:53One and now my son. I perceive.
- 32:57There is somewhat more which doth worry your mind which you
- 33:00cannot understand, which is concerning the justice of God in
- 33:03the punishment of the Sinner. For you do try to suppose.
- 33:06That it is injustice that the Sinner should be consigned to a
- 33:09state of misery? Why would that be?
- 33:12Why would Corrie Anton be struggling with this?
- 33:14Is it perhaps because they've spent some time among the
- 33:17Zoramites who are teaching? Nihor's Doctrine.
- 33:19Which says it doesn't matter. What you do, God loves.
- 33:23You and God's going to save everyone.
- 33:26God's not going to punish anyone.
- 33:28Everyone's going to be saved in the end.
- 33:31That's Niehor's doctrine, and the Zoramites and Antionam are
- 33:34living that doctrine. They're preaching that doctrine.
- 33:36So now here's this young son who has been enticed by that
- 33:41doctrine, and he's a little concerned, thinking, well, is
- 33:45it? Just is it fair?
- 33:46Is it right for God to? Punish a Sinner when in reality
- 33:50Alma's saying it's much more complex than what Nihor would
- 33:55have had you. Believe because it's a.
- 33:57State of being it's. This law of of the harvest, the
- 34:02law of. Restoring things that you've put
- 34:05in to life. So notice verse two.
- 34:09Behold, my son, I will explain this thing unto thee, for.
- 34:12Behold, after the Lord God. Sent our first parents forth
- 34:15from the Garden of Eden to till the ground from whence they were
- 34:18taken. Yeah, he drew out the man and he
- 34:22placed at the East End of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a
- 34:25flaming sword which turned every way to.
- 34:27Keep the tree of life. There were two trees.
- 34:30In Eden among. All the other trees.
- 34:35Two, that had major consequences.
- 34:37The tree of. Knowledge of good and evil and
- 34:41the tree of life. These two.
- 34:43Trees happen to be portals or entry points.
- 34:47This one was the entry point into mortal life.
- 34:53This one was the entry point into Eternal.
- 34:56Life, the tree of life. Springing up unto life
- 35:00everlasting, you'll notice as soon as they.
- 35:03Partake of the. Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge
- 35:05of Good and Evil. They've now entered this this
- 35:08mortal state of their being. God placed an Angel, a cherubim,
- 35:14or cherubim plural, and a flaming.
- 35:16Sword to guard the way of the tree.
- 35:19Of life. It wasn't time for them to enter
- 35:22into eternal life, yet they had to enter this probationary
- 35:26state. Look at verse 4.
- 35:28Thus we see that there was a. Time granted unto man to repent.
- 35:33Yeah, a probationary time. A time to repent and serve God.
- 35:38This space between. Birth where we're we're brought.
- 35:43Into mortality and death. Where the day will.
- 35:46Come when we. Get to partake of the fruit of
- 35:49the tree of. Life entering into eternal life.
- 35:53Hopefully, or at least. Resurrection for all mankind is
- 35:58not right after you enter into mortality.
- 36:02There needs to be this space, this probationary test, which
- 36:06flies in the face of Nihor's doctrine that Coriantin has.
- 36:11Maybe. Started to believe.
- 36:12From these ormites. Look at verse 5 for Behold if
- 36:15Adam had. Put forth his hand immediately
- 36:17and partaken of the tree. Of life he would have lived
- 36:20forever according to the word of.
- 36:21God having no space for repentance.
- 36:23Yeah, and also. The word of God would.
- 36:25Have been void and the great plan of salvation would have
- 36:29been frustrated. They become fallen.
- 36:32It's appointed for man to die in that next verse.
- 36:35And then look at verse 7. Now we see by this that our
- 36:39first parents were. Cut off both.
- 36:41Temporally and spiritually from the presence of the Lord.
- 36:44And thus we see that they become subjects.
- 36:46To follow after their own. Will verse 10 Therefore, as they
- 36:50had become carnal, sensual, and devilish by nature, this
- 36:54probationary state became a state for them to.
- 36:57Prepare. It became a preparatory state.
- 37:01Now we get the plan of salvation and we get this probationary
- 37:05period of life called mortality where we get to move forward in
- 37:10these in these great tests. Notice that the whole point here
- 37:18is he's setting up again this juxtaposition between mercy and.
- 37:24Justice of God the best. Analogy I know for chapter. 42.
- 37:29Was given by Elder. Boyd K Packer clear back.
- 37:33In April of 1977. He set up this idea that you
- 37:37have a creditor. Who loans money to a debtor and
- 37:46a a the terms of that loan repayment are.
- 37:50Established, but it. Turns out that the debtor
- 37:53defaults on the loan and can't pay.
- 37:56Justice must be served. Justice can't be.
- 38:01Robbed, or God would cease to be God.
- 38:04Alma helps his young son Corienton understand that that
- 38:08it's not that you can say. Well, because God loves all.
- 38:12Of his children. Therefore his law becomes null
- 38:16and void and he can just turn a blind eye to it and say, I know
- 38:19you broke it. I know you planted all these
- 38:21seeds in your life that are weeds, but I'm just going to
- 38:25overcome all that. Regardless of what you desired.
- 38:28And I'm just going to save everybody.
- 38:30That's Niehor's doctrine, taught to him by the devil, inspired by
- 38:34the devil. God's.
- 38:35Doctrine is I love you, so I'm going to give you laws to help
- 38:41you learn how to live your life in a way that will put you in a
- 38:45state of peace of. Rest a state of paradise.
- 38:49Eternal life so that you can become more like me.
- 38:52Because wickedness never was happiness.
- 38:55So God's love. Is best demonstrated by looking
- 39:00at the laws. That he.
- 39:02Gives us, and especially the best demonstration of God's love
- 39:06is by giving us his Son. The Lord Jesus Christ who is.
- 39:12Given so that justice can. Still be served Here's.
- 39:17Me here's you we owe a debt to. Justice that.
- 39:21We've defaulted on the loan. We shouldn't look at this and
- 39:24go, wow, I'm glad I'm not Corry Anton.
- 39:26The reality is is symbolically. This is our story.
- 39:32This is all of us. We've all defaulted on that
- 39:35loan, So what happens? We get a mediator who comes in
- 39:42to stand. Betwixt you.
- 39:45And justice that inserts himself.
- 39:48Right there to say the price has to be.
- 39:51Paid justice must be served so Jesus as our mediator, steps in.
- 39:58Justice can still be served. It can.
- 40:01Still be paid so he. Pays the loan that we can't
- 40:04afford, and then he turns to us and now he can extend mercy.
- 40:11So this is the plan of redemption.
- 40:14This is the plan of happiness. This is the plan of salvation in
- 40:18in all of its realms is rooted in its central feature.
- 40:26It's central. Character, which is Jesus
- 40:30Christ. It's only through him that
- 40:33justice can fully be served and mercy can fully be extended.
- 40:39President Boyd K Packer's talk in April 1977 that I mentioned.
- 40:44Describes that so beautifully that.
- 40:47Jesus now turns to us and says. Look, I paid a price.
- 40:50That you couldn't pay? Will you just have faith in me?
- 40:54Will you repent? Which means to turn to and to
- 40:58change. Your course if we use.
- 41:01The Hebrew version of repentance.
- 41:03That's what a loving, kind, gentle father is doing here.
- 41:10Brothers and sisters, we've spent all this time covering
- 41:13Alma, 39 through 42, talking about Alma, referring to his son
- 41:18Corrie Anton. And that's wonderful and it's
- 41:21valid, and you can study it in the historical context for years
- 41:25and years and years and still keep finding truths.
- 41:28But for me? The reality of this chapter.
- 41:30Is I'm seeing a mirror, I'm seeing a reflection of my own
- 41:35story with a loving Father in heaven who's saying to me.
- 41:42Tyler, you struggled. Let me.
- 41:44Teach you about the seriousness of those sins.
- 41:47Let me teach you about the ways you might have been able to
- 41:50prevent those. And let me teach you about how
- 41:54to turn to me, how to change. How to?
- 41:58Start planting better seeds. How to rely on Christ?
- 42:04This whole section is a a symbolic way for me to insert
- 42:12myself into this very real scenario and say you don't have
- 42:19to have gone after a harlot named Isabel in the land of
- 42:22Siren to desperately need the redemptive power and mercy and
- 42:29merits and. Grace of the.
- 42:31Redeemer, even the Lord. Jesus Christ.
- 42:35Dieter F Uchtdorf many years ago gave an incredible talk.
- 42:39Where he described. Some of the struggles that we
- 42:43sometimes face in life. Here's what he says.
- 42:46When we feel hurt, angry or envious.
- 42:51It is quite easy to judge people this.
- 42:53Topic could actually be taught in a two word sermon.
- 42:57When it comes to hating, gossiping, ignoring, ridiculing,
- 43:01holding grudges or wanting to cause harm, please apply the
- 43:06following. Stop it. 2 words whether you're.
- 43:11Looking in the mirror, ridiculing, judging, condemning
- 43:15because of past wrongs or whether you're looking at
- 43:18somebody else condemning, judging or pointing fingers of
- 43:23scorn because of. Poor.
- 43:25Decisions that maybe have been made as they've cast out.
- 43:30Weed seeds into their garden. Plot Elder Ukdorf for President
- 43:34Ukdorf at the time. Gave us the pretty powerful
- 43:37council to stop it. Because what we're doing is
- 43:42we're limiting or trying to cut people off from the power of the
- 43:47plan of salvation, which is rooted in Jesus Christ as their
- 43:51mediator, their intercessor. May the Lord bless all of us.
- 43:57As we move forward, continuing to teach the ideal, continuing
- 44:01to study the ideal, but then sitting down like a second.
- 44:05Grader to. Work on our math problems and
- 44:08realizing, oh, I messed up again and again and again.
- 44:14It's a good thing that math isn't broken.
- 44:17It's a good thing that the gospel isn't broken.
- 44:19It's a good thing. That the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 44:23Is in a rowboat coming out to help.
- 44:26Those of us who. Often get in a little.
- 44:29Too far over our heads. I know he lives, I know he
- 44:33loves, I know he redeems and I know he saves.
- 44:36This is the plan. The plan wasn't.
- 44:40For you to be perfect. The plan was.
- 44:42For you to do the. Best you can to move forward and
- 44:45learn from your own experience and to rely on the merits, Mercy
- 44:49and. Grace of the Lord Jesus.
- 44:50Christ, and I leave that with you, in the name of Jesus
- 44:53Christ, Amen.
