- 0:01No, it's Simon Joe. Where will this go?
- 0:04It's time to sing in a hamster. Come and tree.
- 0:09Wow, this is gay. It's always pretty gay with you,
- 0:19man. Well, yeah, that's very true.
- 0:23I think that might have given away, which story we might be
- 0:25talking about. I love the jingles in the macros
- 0:28are owed. No.
- 0:33Well, thank you do, fuck your to science Joe.
- 0:38Who I remember back back in the early days where I was doing
- 0:44hand, so they were you there was no way you were ever going to
- 0:47get me to sing. And now look well, after I feel
- 0:51as if our relationship has moved on in Leaps and Bounds since
- 0:54then, did you not hear my recent tribute to our friendship in the
- 0:59two doctors as finally? But it is one year old who knew
- 1:05who knew it was going to take that long to get there.
- 1:10So, this is your intro. This is so, yes.
- 1:14So today we are following the two doctors going back into the
- 1:19proper transfer mirror for the first time.
- 1:22So we've been all over the shop and I think there's only one
- 1:26doctor we haven't done anything or no to doctors.
- 1:29We haven't done anything about now between us with Fraser as
- 1:33well. That's myth.
- 1:37Oh no victory of the Daleks will start.
- 1:38Are We Done Yet? What's the team?
- 1:41We've got Christopher Eccleston. Of course, boomtowns coming up.
- 1:45Yeah, and Paul McGann but there's very limited choices for
- 1:49home. Again, we've asked a big finish.
- 1:51Yeah, you said this is diving into the trout, on era.
- 1:57I actually think This is where the trout in, there are really
- 2:03kicks in this story. All certainly trans doctor.
- 2:07Yeah, this is feels like his doctors arrived, doesn't it?
- 2:10And I think there's you could also say that pretty much the
- 2:13same about the moon base, which is directly before this.
- 2:16I think he's sort of got the hang of what he's doing and
- 2:19there's more the doctor that we get to know, sort of later on
- 2:23sort of in these two stories he really sort of emerges.
- 2:27Did you ever hear the story about?
- 2:29About Morris, Barry. Basically, he was clowning
- 2:31around trout and doing what he was doing in his first three
- 2:34stories. And Maurice barrier was like no
- 2:36no no and I we're not having any of that I want you to take this.
- 2:39Seriously, this is a serious story.
- 2:41Like I think Morris Barry, was the first person to sort of like
- 2:44toum into line and then that's kind of what he goes with.
- 2:48Isn't it from this point? Yeah, from there on in his
- 2:51doctor is pretty well formed so but he's always slightly Elusive
- 2:55and slightly difficult to pin down and if you Try and describe
- 3:02Patrick troughton's doctor. It's a difficult thing because
- 3:04you've got the cosmic hobo thing but that doesn't really like
- 3:10that that sort of describes his early days and when he comes
- 3:13back into the show in the three doctors and the five doctors and
- 3:15the two doctors he's he's like like that.
- 3:19But the rest of the time he's is kind of Shifty and difficult and
- 3:24hard to pin down. You know, sometimes thing with
- 3:26those later was 35 and to It's like, it's how people remember
- 3:32him being robbed, how he actually was during this time.
- 3:36So he's like a bit impish, isn't it?
- 3:38And he's, he's a bit cheeky, but I don't think there's any of
- 3:41that darkness that was there. And I know what she's era
- 3:44through he had be a bit of a shit sometimes, you know?
- 3:48Yeah. The right there are hints of it
- 3:51at the end of pair of the Daleks and all the way through evil of
- 3:55the Daleks. He's really you not quite sure
- 3:57what side he's on. The site man.
- 3:59He's the one that's responsible for getting them down into those
- 4:02tombs. So he's technically responsible
- 4:04for those deaths in that and and Weber Field would have succeeded
- 4:08if he'd actually just told someone what he was planning to
- 4:11do so. But he keeps things to himself
- 4:15and house has Secrets. Have you ever?
- 4:18Yeah. He has secrets.
- 4:19That sounds like Tom Baker talk. Yeah it does.
- 4:21Doesn't it? Scientists believe this man has
- 4:23Secrets. A benevolent alien with Secrets.
- 4:27Hmm. But Also like his go-to response
- 4:33to crisis is kill the monsters, isn't it?
- 4:37Well, what's yes. Yeah, I think we'll be talking
- 4:39about this in the next story we do with freezer.
- 4:43Yeah, well because there's a lot of gun down there.
- 4:47The monsters in that 12, people sea trout and it is very and he
- 4:51is incredibly like Charming, funny all of those things but I
- 4:56like that boy, you know? And I think See this, when Matt
- 5:00Smith looks back and he cites trout and doesn't he is and you
- 5:05can kind of see it in the physicality of his before.
- 5:08Yes. And his face and all of that.
- 5:11But Matt Smith's doctor has like an element of Darkness about him
- 5:15as well. Yeah.
- 5:16And again not always able to pin him down and he Has again Travis
- 5:22and also has moments of anger that you don't expect from his
- 5:27doctor as well. We've sort of come out of
- 5:29nowhere, almost. Yeah.
- 5:31Wow. And today we are not.
- 5:35I've recently done a reconstruction of the Daleks
- 5:39master plan. We're not doing the
- 5:40Reconstruction today because we have, what some would say, is a
- 5:44superior version of the macro Terrace watch.
- 5:47Yes. Yeah.
- 5:48Well then again, this is a contentious one.
- 5:50Is that everyone? A different opinion.
- 5:53And everyone has a different opinion of whether they're how
- 5:59they should be. And I think typically the macra
- 6:03terror one was was quite controversial because it did
- 6:09take out some seems just for the ease of making it animated and
- 6:14things like that. So, it did make some changes but
- 6:16also as well, there's a scale to this that in no way was in The
- 6:21original production then when they go out on location, it
- 6:24feels like a vassal Star Wars, ask environment and I don't
- 6:30think you ever saw the exterior of the colony know they show it
- 6:34but you know I'm going to I'm going to be controversial now
- 6:36and I'm going to say if you've got a way of making this
- 6:40material more accessible to the audience today by making it more
- 6:45visually interesting than, perhaps it was originally with
- 6:48the soundtrack included. Why?
- 6:51Wouldn't you do that? What?
- 6:52Exactly. I'm this is why I think I always
- 6:55watch it in 16:9 in color because that's how they're
- 6:59animating it. And what's the point of slavish
- 7:04Leary making it, I can understand it for the other
- 7:07animations that they did sort of earlier on where their
- 7:10interspersing episodes within a story sort of with existing
- 7:15episodes. But here, they're starting
- 7:18mostly from a blank canvas, so haven't got very much.
- 7:21Moving footage from this story at all.
- 7:24So why try and recreate 1967 when you can do it as 2017 or
- 7:29whatever for 2017 2018, something like that, you know,
- 7:34make it big and bright and make it how they'd love to have made
- 7:38it in NASA itself. And if they could, this is what
- 7:41they would have made if they have the budget to do it.
- 7:45Yes. And so to have a bat kind of
- 7:47imagined for us, I think that's wonderful.
- 7:50Yeah, and it Some takeaway from the original, the original.
- 7:53You could watch the Telly snaps if you like if you're a
- 7:56masochist I'm not a big fan of tele snap reconstructions as the
- 8:01main story is still the yeah. On this is the same say.
- 8:05Yeah. It's not like they re-recorded
- 8:07the story with new actors and made it into something.
- 8:10It isn't. It's a very interesting way of
- 8:13animating something because you've got an existing
- 8:16soundtrack that you're working to and so it's a very different
- 8:19way of doing it when you're making An animated movie it's
- 8:23you've got more scope to do what you want because you can
- 8:26transform the, you can get b re-recorded.
- 8:29If it doesn't work with the animation, you can sort of do
- 8:31all of that, but here your slave usually working to something.
- 8:35That was recorded in a hurry in 1967 and trying to make the best
- 8:40out of it. And yet in the same breath, it
- 8:43has given them scope to be more ambitious to make you out.
- 8:46I mean, yeah, I mean Mac for I could not have done what they do
- 8:49with this animated. You look amazing in this.
- 8:52I was watching this out earlier. I went to one picks up pollen,
- 8:55all right. And now we know that weren't
- 8:56happening says there's those are started because there is the
- 8:59footage of Anika Wills throwing herself into the Falls of a
- 9:02macra and desperately wrestling with with a prop.
- 9:05That's not not really movable but you know it makes the gulf
- 9:09between this and gridlock which we've also recording the
- 9:12community far smaller you know. Like because I think when we saw
- 9:16gridlock was like oh wow that's how the macro could have been
- 9:18yes and now we get to see them. Macro how they could have been
- 9:22in the in their original story. Yeah.
- 9:25So one more quick question before we head in this is our
- 9:28longest Preamble. Yeah.
- 9:30I think you'll get this bad as me and track.
- 9:33You know, Mom will be braised. Is do you think some of the
- 9:39animations like do you think they're variable and quality?
- 9:43Because I do I think some of them are extreme.
- 9:45I think this and evil of the Daleks of very strong and others
- 9:51The ice Warriors in the reign of terror.
- 9:54Yeah. Yeah, I think you're absolutely
- 9:56right. I am.
- 9:58This is my favorite of all the animations.
- 10:00I just really love this one. Evil is very, very close second.
- 10:05Is that this one sort of took me by surprise at what they could
- 10:09do suddenly with an animation. So think this is the third of
- 10:14the complete story once they were no kids.
- 10:18Well pair of the Daleks wasn't it, don't Sharda.
- 10:21Yeah. And then this so the Upgrade
- 10:26between from the original Power of the Daleks to this.
- 10:29Feels like it's huge. Like they've just decided to
- 10:33just relax and just do what they want to do.
- 10:36I think this feels like the most accomplished.
- 10:39Yes. And of all of them.
- 10:40Actually. And interestingly, when Fury
- 10:43from the deep came out after this and Galaxy for it, felt
- 10:46like a bit of a step back. Yes.
- 10:49Yeah. It's weird, isn't it?
- 10:50I Galaxy for and Fury from the deep sort of, I think suffer
- 10:57from what they, from making things epic by putting in big
- 11:05spaces and putting your characters into bigger spaces
- 11:09than they might have been on TV and that doesn't necessarily
- 11:12work for either of them. So suddenly in Galaxy for the
- 11:15real ship is huge. Yeah, and that's fine and in
- 11:20galaxies in Fury from Keep something.
- 11:22You've got this. The refinery control room is
- 11:26really big and massive arms. And you say this though, they've
- 11:30also got massive arms, which doesn't help The Travelers are
- 11:33mr. Tickle, in our foes saying, yes,
- 11:35it's very, very strange. If they are.
- 11:38They've got the really wonderful bit in Fury where they've got
- 11:42the helicopter chase with the seaweed tentacles coming out of
- 11:45the sea which again is not what was intended on TV but suddenly
- 11:49makes those things really tense and really Good.
- 11:52So there are these bits in theory as well?
- 11:54Where I fit it. I feel like they use like some
- 11:56photographic backgrounds and things like that as well.
- 11:59I see it's a bit of a weird message still.
- 12:01Yeah. You know what, I'm still
- 12:02extremely grateful that we can. Absolutely.
- 12:04It's a new way to experience all of these stories with their on
- 12:08our shelves now, as well. Which is.
- 12:09Yeah, you know, Okay, well, I got one piece of information for
- 12:15you. Do you know who is responsible
- 12:20for the selection of stories that we have had a man animated?
- 12:28Kind of I'll go on in, I bet if I remember rightly, some of it
- 12:35is Mark, Aires is not okay, it's cause it's all to do with, which
- 12:40soundtracks exist in the best quality, but they can do
- 12:44something with because there's no point animating the celestial
- 12:49toymaker. If you've got a dreadful sound,
- 12:51hissing sound track and like Marco Polo, which I know has
- 12:55been cleaned up, but it's L a bit iffy in place.
- 12:59Yes. Oh, well, oh well.
- 13:09Should we skip into episode 1? Yes.
- 13:12All right. So we're going to the unnamed
- 13:14Connolly of the macro planet. We are.
- 13:18Well, what are you cats in, okay.
- 13:19All right, in five, four, three, two, one, go.
- 13:27Off we go. Are you almost forget?
- 13:30We get this lovely. Sorry you're watching big box or
- 13:33DVD on Blu-ray. Oh so this lovely pre credits
- 13:41teaser. Does not look gorgeous.
- 13:46Beautiful. I don't think I've ever
- 13:48mentioned it on hamster, but I have a real one of my big Doctor
- 13:52Who things is. I love a tardis spinning in
- 13:55space shot. I don't think we've ever
- 13:57actually had a story with the Tardis spinning in space in
- 14:00order once we are two examples of my favorite.
- 14:04One of all because I do have a list go on start to Full Circle,
- 14:10they've got the really fast Tardis coming down the street.
- 14:12Rain. And then you've got the lovely
- 14:14spin as it goes into East face with the quantum effects.
- 14:17I was a, that's my go to get out of comprehend.
- 14:20Yeah, exactly. Okay.
- 14:23What else there is? Mars is the one that's give me
- 14:31some bosses, has a really good one yet.
- 14:32That's that's nice, with nice bit of Dudley swirling, the one
- 14:36at the end of Frontier in space and start of Planet of the
- 14:39Daleks is quite nice. Isn't it one?
- 14:42As well as a growing Williams one.
- 14:44We always look to bring William stacks of stones of blood.
- 14:48Yeah amazing. Oh and you must have absolutely
- 14:52had a hard-on of your life when you saw the new title sequence
- 14:57for the new series, then. Yes.
- 15:02And all those new ones that I did for the animated short
- 15:07order, we're just well they were absolutely gorgeous.
- 15:11Well the entrance to this colony is decidedly futuristic.
- 15:15It, you know I'm gonna do this. Yeah, be Doc was running just
- 15:24slightly futuristic you suck, right J&T the ANC.
- 15:28So yep. So that gives us a really good
- 15:30clue of what where we are and what it looks like.
- 15:34I suppose I suppose decidedly futuristic could be anything in
- 15:37your imaginary exactly you can make it what you want.
- 15:40I feel like in the animated version here, it looks like it's
- 15:43made out of a lot of egg boxes which probably you know it's
- 15:46quite appropriate for Doctor Who.
- 15:47Yeah. Mmm.
- 15:50Now, here we have knocked Terrence Lodge.
- 15:53Yes, he turns up in a couple of dogs, true story, just in
- 15:57Carnival of monsters, which we talked about recently.
- 16:00We did and planet of the spiders.
- 16:03That's right. I think he him and Elisabeth
- 16:06sladen lived together at one point.
- 16:08She said oh right that they shared a flat forget while okay
- 16:12when our job in actors you know they needed to bring these
- 16:15together. In order to survive, this is a
- 16:18really interesting. Resting opening because there's
- 16:22it's literally just some sound effects and dancing.
- 16:27Yes, really different and it's it wouldn't be difficult to have
- 16:31any clue from the audit, the the audio, what's going on.
- 16:35But I think they do a good step with the with the dancing and
- 16:39everything else. And this this piece of music
- 16:43chromophore band is written by Dudley Simpson but is the only
- 16:47other piece of music for To realized by Delia Derbyshire, is
- 16:52it really? It is so other than the theme,
- 16:54this is the only up a bit of music for doctor that she
- 16:57directly did for Doctor Who, you know, what is probably the piece
- 17:01of music are having the most after the theme tune, I know.
- 17:04Yeah, it's really catchy. I really like, well, one thing
- 17:09is, I love the sound effects in this throughout.
- 17:12I think there's lots of sort of slurping Sinister sounds
- 17:16throughout the entire story but that switch from something
- 17:20sinister happening in the dark to the jolliness of the
- 17:24cheerleaders and the music. And that's just Doctor Who in a
- 17:27nutshell, isn't it? It is, isn't it?
- 17:31It's um yeah, it really quickly establishes that you've got
- 17:37somewhere that is bright on the outside but there's a dark
- 17:40secret underneath and things aren't necessarily what they
- 17:45seem. And this is that's that's like a
- 17:49very 60s, preoccupation isn't it of like?
- 17:52Yeah. I the whole thing is, is Barry
- 17:541967. So there's obviously something
- 17:57in in the water at the time. So this ends up Up with the
- 18:01prisoner at the end of the year, which is very, very similar to
- 18:06this very similar program premise.
- 18:08So, you've got a place with lots of Jingles with lots of
- 18:12loudspeaker announcements. There looks like a holiday camp
- 18:16but is really Sinister underneath and is dark things
- 18:18happening. Lots of sort of mind control.
- 18:21And yeah, yes, and weirdness. Is it with Ian Stewart black and
- 18:26the mind because in this has something about this.
- 18:28That's the end. Yeah.
- 18:30That's about taking Minds. Our people isn't it in?
- 18:34Yet the war machines is all about controlling people and
- 18:37taking away their free will. So wondering if that's just a
- 18:41preoccupation that he might have had, you know.
- 18:43Yeah. Or maybe or maybe it was just
- 18:45something that was really current because you've also got
- 18:47the film, the ipcress file at the same time, which is all
- 18:50about mind brainwashing and things like that in mind
- 18:55control, and making people do things that they don't want to
- 18:58do. So it's all there's obviously.
- 19:00Something that is sort of worried, I don't know whether
- 19:02it's a cold war, sort of being or whatever it is, definitely
- 19:08the whole thing with the control arm.
- 19:11That's very old. Well, Ian as they're very
- 19:13absolutely. Yeah.
- 19:14The big motionless picture on the screen with like, big
- 19:17brother is watching you. Yeah, and it feels quite
- 19:22prescient as well. Given how much these days I'm
- 19:25telling you. Well, yeah, and I've been
- 19:29reading Book about the history of the BBC recently which has
- 19:33been very fascinating and that choir you kept that quiet.
- 19:39Well, I have well, yeah, it was kept me quite as about 600
- 19:42pages, long sucker, it's but it's there was a real fear of
- 19:49using Jingles on radio and how that might brainwash people and
- 19:54sort of be could be used for subversive means to make people
- 19:58think things that they weren't thinking or to make them listen
- 20:02to things that they weren't listening.
- 20:03So all that sort of subliminal sort of sound thing.
- 20:06So to have a story that is based around Jingles when you finish
- 20:10work and all of that is sort of playing into really big fears in
- 20:17in society at the time about all of these things.
- 20:19There's an episode of the 60s sci-fi and follow G Series after
- 20:25the unknown, which is called the tunnel under the world which is
- 20:28my favorite episode of out. Amount which is all about
- 20:32advertising jingles and slogans and how you end up buying
- 20:36things, you don't want to buy because you're hearing these
- 20:39sounds all through your day and the BBC, or obviously really
- 20:44scared that people could be using this for nefarious means
- 20:49and then they went and did it when they launched radio one.
- 20:51Anyway and went down the jingle route as it was.
- 20:54So now everyone asks where everyone's out to it.
- 20:57Now, it's all there and we all do it, we all find ourselves.
- 21:00Selves, humming adverts. Yeah.
- 21:02And things like that and remembering the slogans because
- 21:04we hear them all the time and it keeps on coming and coming and
- 21:08coming. Oh, I beg your pardon, I was in
- 21:12a shop. You have a day, right?
- 21:13And the music was so sophomoric that I felt very depressed about
- 21:18life. Ian, that straight down the
- 21:19chocolate and I was buying, those are chocolate.
- 21:21I was like exactly. Yeah, so it works.
- 21:24But the jingles in this is so Sinister, isn't it?
- 21:27Because they are really catchy, but they're all.
- 21:30We're happy to look, you know? Yeah, thank you to thank you to
- 21:37Lala and it's all that big love everything looking great on the
- 21:45outside and this is such a happy place to be and it's like being
- 21:49very much and I'm sure it's designed like this very much
- 21:52like being at Butlins in the 1950s and 60s, where you've got
- 21:57happy, music played through the loudspeakers at you all.
- 22:00Guitar is fucking miserable. Yeah.
- 22:03And to you're having a communal experience and you're having the
- 22:06best time of your life and you really are and you're showing
- 22:09off your knees and your grand is doing something embarrassing and
- 22:13you're all there and it's yeah, and it is great. hey, look Dear
- 22:19Old, Barney Alton Road, Bonnie Nothing succeeds like success.
- 22:25So did you know what I mean? That is a authentic
- 22:32representation of the controller.
- 22:34Because like, there are tele snaps at this really Sinister
- 22:37faces. Is this an it?
- 22:40Okay, so I don't have it on this far, they're all in the colony
- 22:46now. And yeah, mentioned the second
- 22:48doctor polygem Polly been and G. Jamie.
- 22:53So okay. Okay, so this is a question from
- 22:57our dear friend Fraser Gregory. Oh, not him?
- 23:00Yes, him. He's come out as with some
- 23:02question was specifically to you, because he sent.
- 23:04Okay, all right, so when discussing troughton's
- 23:09companions, no one in my experience, pigs Polly been and
- 23:13Jamie as their favorite artists team.
- 23:15What is it that Jamie has that been?
- 23:18Doesn't that make him stand out and give him that longevity?
- 23:24Oh, God is good, it's me Cameron.
- 23:32It's a very interesting time because this is a Tardis team
- 23:36that is kind of thrown together in the chaos of the start of the
- 23:40trout in years. So it's not one that was
- 23:42planned, so I really love Polly. I think Polly never gets enough
- 23:47love. She's she's brilliant, and she's
- 23:51gung-ho, and she's she is scared but she's Brave.
- 23:55At the same time like the best Doctor, Who companions and she
- 23:58throws herself into an adventure and everything is Super with
- 24:02Polly. So she's she's great.
- 24:04You don't think I with her. Sometimes they make some odd
- 24:06choices. Now, I owe ya.
- 24:08There's this is B in the Highlanders where she's with.
- 24:11Yeah, she's like oh, you ignorant savage, you know.
- 24:14Yeah. She's is really interested.
- 24:17So it's got this wonderful thing of treating everyone in the past
- 24:22like they're all stupid which is very much an almost a I'm 1960s
- 24:29woman might like Polly my Do what effect?
- 24:32Well actually, I'm from a much later age.
- 24:35You must all be really stupid, and then realizing later on that
- 24:39that she's judging people, and she's not like that.
- 24:43And all fell out the kid in the Smugglers.
- 24:47Yeah. Oh God.
- 24:48She's hot. She's horrible.
- 24:50And they've convinced him. That I know that she's awake.
- 24:53That's right. Yes, and yes.
- 24:56And she has some really lovely warmth with, with Michael craze
- 25:00has been, oh, Oh man, there and they're this, they are
- 25:04good-looking. I'm telling you now they're one
- 25:06of the hottest pairs of Doctor Who companions in the top crazy
- 25:10highs in bloody. Yeah, robbery in the underwater
- 25:14Menace. That's the Tardis team.
- 25:15I would jump into merrily, I'm telling God will all fit in
- 25:18there somewhere. But sort of to think about it
- 25:24and I think what Jamie adds is maybe a bit more warmth.
- 25:32Yeah. So This Crew there's been and
- 25:36Polly are very cool 1960s and throwing a character, that's a
- 25:40bit more naive and doesn't know all these things.
- 25:43I think sort of works nicely what they do.
- 25:46That weird thing in the Moonbase don't lay where the two of them
- 25:50are fighting over. Polly.
- 25:52There's a bit of aggression between yeah, I often wonder if
- 25:57that's sort of because it's last minute and they've got to write
- 25:59him in and they've got to find something for him to do is I
- 26:02don't think that quite works because I think they are all
- 26:06friends, but maybe that's exactly how Ben would react
- 26:10because Ben can be a bit reactionary and a bit for sure
- 26:13with his fists and bit. There was some bits in this,
- 26:16right? We're and Michael because I
- 26:18think this is probably Michael crazes best performance because
- 26:22as he gives him some opportunities to do something
- 26:24Beyond, sort of being the doctors muscle where he's quite
- 26:31masculine like overly masculine and a bit sinister.
- 26:36Specially when he's pursuing Polly.
- 26:38Yeah, and you do wonder whether they brainwashing that young to
- 26:43goes, just unlock something that's actually think, down, in
- 26:47his psyche. Yeah.
- 26:49Because like in stories, like power of the Daleks and that he
- 26:52can be quite forceful where trout and contact, he's not.
- 26:55Yeah, he's not accepting. This is the new Doctor.
- 26:57He's not having it. He's not even though he's seen
- 27:00it happen. He's not God to accept that this
- 27:03is, this is the doctor. He's not like physically
- 27:07imposing as in. He's quite a small guy, isn't
- 27:09it? Yeah, race, but he's quite in
- 27:12your face as well and with his opinion goal.
- 27:15Yeah. He's got an intensity about him,
- 27:18I think. But he does look great.
- 27:21When he's been being soaked to the bone and in those jealous,
- 27:25that's for me to know. Smugglers is a Smuggler's very
- 27:29takes his gear off. Yeah, that's right.
- 27:31Yeah. We need those two stories back.
- 27:34You see his nipples in one tellest apis that would do
- 27:37nicely. Well, we need Fraser right now,
- 27:39get a bit tired. So I think they were actually,
- 27:44by this point, they're working quite well.
- 27:46As the Tardis team, I think it took until this point that's was
- 27:49annoying. And then in the faceless ones,
- 27:51obviously, they understand that they're not there.
- 27:54I'm I'm done very quick clearly. So I think they even have worked
- 27:59a nice car nice for them. I've had evil of the Daleks as
- 28:03well. That one that would have been a
- 28:04nice way to go out at the end of that.
- 28:07Yeah, I think that could have worked just and as a friend of
- 28:12mine, Andrew some says we're very much in contract roulette
- 28:18at the moment. Yeah.
- 28:20With the Companions and the changing teams.
- 28:22And one thing in the storage is very good, sort of behind the
- 28:26scenes at keeping everything running, but he's not very good
- 28:31at looking after his False and people are ditched almost on a
- 28:35whim and people are brought in on a whim.
- 28:38And so he creates these two fantastic new companions, brings
- 28:42them in and then straight away. Almost three stories in.
- 28:46He's bringing in another companion because he's, he likes
- 28:49Fraser Hines and he likes brakes.
- 28:52Didn't they in the thought? Yeah and then yeah.
- 28:54Then they want yet. Then they want.
- 28:56Yeah. What's the name?
- 28:57Pauline colonies holding Colin's to be the companion and she
- 29:01turns them down. Down and then they've called
- 29:03someone else's Victoria. And then she's fired because
- 29:06they don't think she will work so well with troughton and and
- 29:10who was apparently, he's back plate is an order 60 shows.
- 29:18And so, and then then then Deborah Watling is brought in so
- 29:22it's all over the place and I tell you a story.
- 29:27Well, so it's got nothing to do with any of this.
- 29:29Very quick low. Yes.
- 29:35So Barbara was reading up. Mary times autobiography?
- 29:39Yeah. And it was a story about how
- 29:41they went on the Doctor Who Crews from hell, right.
- 29:44And halfway through the crews, they were allowed to go ashore
- 29:47and Mexico because storms here, right?
- 29:49So that's a stay on the wall are and literally the boat was being
- 29:52and they were like no one can disembark the ship but nobody
- 29:56had told Deborah. What?
- 29:57Lynn and she'd gone off on one of these.
- 30:00One of the things to go ashore Or straight into the eye of the
- 30:03storm. Oh my goodness.
- 30:05I really when she came back through, she look like a drowned
- 30:08kitten. Sorry, that's why that, in some
- 30:13way she was a lovely lady. I love pepper.
- 30:16What like she liked her drinking her smokes and she did.
- 30:19Yes, I looked after her at a convention once clang, sorry.
- 30:25Frasier I never, you know, I never like to mention any more
- 30:28stories and it literally got to 11:30 and she Appeared from the
- 30:33sliding table and went and got a large glass of wine and it up
- 30:38for this shit, get me a job. I was getting my critera a very
- 30:45good question. Me Doc is on the screen.
- 30:50I'll try to this being nicely Elusive and setting him free.
- 30:54He know straightaway he often he could be seated straight.
- 30:58Yes. Yeah, he's seen through all of
- 31:01this where as his companions are a bit more seduced by the
- 31:05fripperies own. As one of the things we don't
- 31:07see in this version because of the difficulty of animating, it
- 31:11all was shouting in the RAF and they are the Rough and Tumble
- 31:16machine and making themselves small and things like that.
- 31:19I read that. I so what is pure trout in it?
- 31:22Yes. But also we don't get to see
- 31:25Polly been and Jamie having their treatments as well at the
- 31:27sort of same time. So I think there's Telly snap.
- 31:30Of my crazed being massaged and, and things like that, and
- 31:34they're all set there. With that said, I've saw that
- 31:36face, I would have done that job.
- 31:38You know, artists during the mass Elgin actually, no, because
- 31:42they do take some Liberties than 0 because of poly as a hair cut.
- 31:47That's right. Yes, but she's starting with the
- 31:49short hair from the start of this, and I think because that
- 31:53they most heinous crime in this whole thing, he was having his
- 31:56Ian Levine moment. Well, you know, I understand why
- 32:02they did it because It would just be extra cost and they have
- 32:06got a lot of money to do this, so not Pixar.
- 32:09They haven't got infinite money and I absolutely by that.
- 32:15Excuse until you think we'll actually they did the wheel in
- 32:19space animation alongside this and maybe if they hadn't have
- 32:22done that, they might have been answered of danis.
- 32:25Yes. Because at the end of the story
- 32:27as well, the bit where there are dancing out the whole.
- 32:30Yeah. We don't get that.
- 32:31It's up to her window. Yes.
- 32:34So you don't get to see that. Oh, and that's to the best bits
- 32:37in the whole story. Yes, I love the rough-and-tumble
- 32:40bad guys, huh. Yes, exactly what I need.
- 32:43Let's go. Now come on Doctor, get out of
- 32:46there. Ronnie comes back as disheveled
- 32:50as ever. But oh so do you think the the
- 32:53doctor sees through all of this, you know, jollity straight away?
- 32:59Yeah. I think so.
- 33:00I think he's naturally suspicious.
- 33:04So this is very be very interesting to see what Patrick
- 33:07troughton is doing in these things because again, we can
- 33:13hear his voice but his performance is so, So yeah and
- 33:20he's always doing. They do an amazing face quite
- 33:23well with this. Yes.
- 33:24Just because he's got a good face for animation because
- 33:26beautifully lined and I don't think you could ever replicate
- 33:31what he's doing with his face though in animation.
- 33:33No. And this is why every time one
- 33:36some of his episodes come back, you're always surprised because
- 33:39he's always doing something that you're not expecting him to be
- 33:42doing well. Those scenes in enemy in the
- 33:44world episode while we're is floating away with Astrid Fair.
- 33:46Area. Are they realize that was going
- 33:48on in the soundtrack and then he's just like and then you've
- 33:53got those scenes in part 4 of the web of fear where you've got
- 33:58him in. Really huge close up at the
- 34:02front of the frame with the other characters behind him.
- 34:04And while he's talking about the great intelligence and its
- 34:07really magical, it's really, really sick.
- 34:10Stirring are saying, isn't it? Yeah, excuse me where we have
- 34:15completely forgotten to mention. The the bondage gear that the
- 34:19guard seems to be wearing in this story, somehow polar in the
- 34:22guards knew what had to be done. Well, owners and other finger
- 34:25owner starts, a long tradition of fat villains.
- 34:30Yes, it's the Paul Whitson Jones effect.
- 34:33Yes. Because we're not long had pool
- 34:35with some Jones who was big villain in the Smugglers.
- 34:39That's right. And he put and then he comes
- 34:41back for for the mutants And then we've got this go to
- 34:46klauber it, his name. I think that's his name.
- 34:49Yeah. Playing hola II think I was
- 34:53pretty good in this, you know? Actually.
- 34:54Yeah. He's nice too sinister and he's
- 34:57playing sort of the archetypal sort of guard and loyal to be
- 35:02the community and knows his place.
- 35:06And yeah, you wouldn't mess with him.
- 35:08The person I find most Sinister in this though.
- 35:10Is Peter Jeffrey, because he is he He's got this sort of enforce
- 35:16jawless hear about him and yeah, he's the one that's running this
- 35:20Sweatshop and he, yeah, he knows what's going on.
- 35:25They could I say to him is, I don't know this in episode 1,
- 35:27episode 2 of they say to him, you know, oh, get the Sleep
- 35:30Therapy going, you know, and he's like, right, so he knows
- 35:33bits of what's going on, but he doesn't know about the macro,
- 35:35does he? Well, there's no such thing as
- 35:37macra so in, they don't exist, what's this?
- 35:40It's just oh my God, what's that?
- 35:44no, Joe, it looks like some kind of Tedious crab-like creature.
- 35:49By crab-like creature was hideous.
- 35:56Poor James even mock relentlessly for this, but it
- 36:01was obviously memorable because we remember all those bits.
- 36:06All right? So what, how did you find that
- 36:08as a first episode? Because I know that rattles
- 36:11along quickly, doesn't it? Yeah, it's really sort of
- 36:16setting is a good setup for a story.
- 36:19So you've got right from the start, you've got all that
- 36:23contrast between the happiness and the, the bad things
- 36:26underneath, which is a thing Doctor Who will keep keep on
- 36:30coming back to sort of down the years.
- 36:32So, yeah, it's doing good. I think that the macro Terra has
- 36:37like, it's like the death to the Daleks effect, right?
- 36:40The first half of the story is something really.
- 36:43Why interesting with a lot of atmosphere and I think there's
- 36:48something very Sinister about this sort of Jolly Koli with all
- 36:51these Sinister things going on and then in the latter half and
- 36:55then you must fight me on this later on.
- 36:57It becomes a bit more of a nuts-and-bolts doctor who Story
- 37:00down in the mines the monsters the you know it's a little bit
- 37:06so we're losing. Yeah we're losing the more
- 37:07interesting subversive message because ultimately, this is
- 37:12always going to be a doctor. Who isn't it?
- 37:14You know, yes, it's about the monsters rather than the mind
- 37:18control.
