- 0:33Hamster with a plump pen knife for doing.
- 0:35Quicker, quicker, quicker. Do you know, I met the paralysis
- 0:44writer? He was a couple weeks ago and I
- 0:47literally was like, paralysis has changed me.
- 0:53And I was like, how would you feel if I did a one man show at
- 0:55the end of the Fringe on Paradise Tell And he was like,
- 0:58if you want to, Yeah, it was like, I'm seriously because
- 1:01it's. A scary thing.
- 1:02You could do it. I know, I know, I know.
- 1:12Jesus. Jesus.
- 1:13Louisa. OK, well over to you robotic
- 1:24leaders that No, sorry. Right.
- 1:26OK. Revelation.
- 1:28OK, the great healer has ordered you to listen to this
- 1:35commentary, the Part 2 of Revelation of the Daleks.
- 1:39Back again. Part 2, Revelation Daleks.
- 1:44I'm here with Joe Ford. Who presents it, You know?
- 1:46Is it? Say hello Joe.
- 1:49The Great Healer. Has ordered you dead.
- 1:54And I'm. I'm back again.
- 1:57Oh, we're gonna have that in this episode.
- 2:00There is something you've forgotten to say.
- 2:02What's that? Well, you haven't mentioned the
- 2:04name of the podcast. Come on.
- 2:06Oh, hamster, it's, it's it's called a bomb.
- 2:10A bomb. A great big bomb.
- 2:13It's called hamster with a lump Pen Knife.
- 2:19I'm just gonna do what do you know what?
- 2:20What's really I'm gonna do My other favorite quote.
- 2:22It's called Answer with a Bump Pen Knife.
- 2:23This lovely podcast. I'm gonna do my other favorite
- 2:25quote, which is how inconvenient.
- 2:28You know, how difficult it is at a good secretary.
- 2:35No, I've been trying. My God, there's so many great
- 2:41lines in this, isn't there? There were, yes, too many good
- 2:44lines. But The thing is, is I would
- 2:46have said to you, after watching Resurrection of the Dialects,
- 2:49Eric's world wasn't capable of writing a good line of dialogue.
- 2:52I mean the dialogue. And that is, you know, your bile
- 2:55would be better directed towards the enemy.
- 2:57David. I'll just, I'll just keep saying
- 3:05stuff. Just, I mean, yeah, that episode
- 3:09would have been about 20 minutes shorter if you attempted.
- 3:13Yeah, I'm convinced. I'm convinced.
- 3:17Now look, you just say you looked.
- 3:19There would be no anecdotes in this story, but I'm hoping
- 3:21there's going to be one or two at least.
- 3:22There's still a few people who haven't mentioned yet.
- 3:25Oh, I know. I just, I feel bad because I'm
- 3:27always just like, Oh my God, this person.
- 3:30Now, let me tell you something, all right, Everybody brings
- 3:34something different to this Okay, like Syhart brings his
- 3:38tales of youth. To every episode.
- 3:41You know, when people come to expect it.
- 3:43Now you drop fabulous anecdotes cuz you got to meet all these
- 3:46amazing people. But I've been in Doctor Who.
- 3:48Well, I've been doing it, you know.
- 3:54Do you know what? Do you know what I realized?
- 3:55So I was born in 1994. First event I ever went to was
- 3:59in 1998, you know. Well, do you know what, Right.
- 4:06When we were watching the documentary on this.
- 4:09Yeah. Mark goes, do you know this
- 4:11documentary was made 20 years after Revelation?
- 4:15I was like, right. He goes, well, now it's nearly
- 4:1740 years after Revelation. God.
- 4:21And I was five when Revelation as all this came out.
- 4:26Way to make it. Well, no.
- 4:27Did you watch it? Was it 85?
- 4:30You didn't watch it live if I ever came out.
- 4:33No, although I have a vivid memory as a child of a red room
- 4:41with like pulsing, and I'm wondering if I did catch the
- 4:45bits with the brains. I don't know what you're
- 4:47thinking about. Anything's possible.
- 4:52No. Oh my gosh, Time of the runny.
- 4:55Could have been time of the runny, I'll tell you.
- 4:57Oh yeah, yeah. Red room.
- 4:58Before we even talk about anything the revelation does.
- 5:01I lost my mom a little while ago but so so I love remembering
- 5:05these funny memories where and me and my exhusband.
- 5:09We stayed. She goes, oh sleep in my room.
- 5:11And I was like, oh mom, no, it's fine.
- 5:13We'll you know, we'll skip on the sofa and then she goes, I'll
- 5:16assist. So we go to bed.
- 5:18We put the light on. Only a fucking red bulb in the
- 5:21in the light fin. The whole room's red.
- 5:25No bedroom backed on to the back alley outside.
- 5:29I'm like, Oh my God, she's been sitting in the window touting
- 5:32for business with a red line on. Oh, she was a kinky male.
- 5:37Be surprised. Anyway, sorry, do you think do
- 5:40you think Tasabeka does that on Tranquil Repose to get a bit of
- 5:43extra cash? Poor Tasabeka.
- 5:46Is she the most strange character?
- 5:49Is she? Is she 20 for a hand jump?
- 5:58Oh, no. Possibly.
- 6:02Possibly. Like, I feel as if everyone's
- 6:06out against her. Even the Doctor patronizes her a
- 6:09bit. You've seen the performance.
- 6:13I like the bit where she goes. What's it got to do with you?
- 6:21Can I tell you something that I read in a review about
- 6:25Revelation of Life? I actually think is a really
- 6:27savvy critique. And that is they wrote that the
- 6:32first episode is all world building.
- 6:34Yeah, and not a lot of plot. It's just building up all the
- 6:38characters in the world and the 2nd episode.
- 6:42Is basically the closest the classic series came to a 45
- 6:47minute new series episode. The Doctor joins at the
- 6:50beginning of the of the episode, so that's when he joins the plot
- 6:53and then it's sort of furious action all the way to the climax
- 6:57with great sort of performance moments and it's really
- 7:00stylishly dumb. Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 7:03And but I think compared to Love Knew Who and Classic Who, it
- 7:10doesn't. I'm saying this in the first
- 7:12episode, it doesn't drag 45 minutes.
- 7:14It just gets on it. It gets through it and you have
- 7:17all that and you know with a lot of doctors who you know this.
- 7:20With the new series, there's so much put into a 5 minute episode
- 7:23that by the end what that that whereas with this it actually
- 7:28goes along at a pace that is breathable.
- 7:31But at the same time there's a lot of plot.
- 7:33There's a lot of plot. And I, and I do think a lot of
- 7:36the plot is contained to this episode and it's a savvy use of
- 7:39the 45 minute format definitely. And bad things to it.
- 7:47Sorry, I don't know what I'm trying to say.
- 7:49What some great exterminations great.
- 7:54Some great. I am right.
- 7:57I don't know if people know this about me.
- 7:59When someone gets exterminated, I don't want someone putting the
- 8:05hands up in the air and going, I want an Alexis out there, you
- 8:09know? I want someone with the hands up
- 8:11in the air screaming as loudly as they can.
- 8:13And you know, I don't. I don't want destiny.
- 8:16The Daleks Episode Three Woman You Know.
- 8:20Oh, she's just talking. Yeah.
- 8:24Do you know what Mark says He went, Oh my God, Jazz hands.
- 8:31Yeah, she does. She's, you know, whereas I want,
- 8:36I want, you know, I want Alexis sail death, which is a great
- 8:39day. That's a great day.
- 8:40You know, that's. And you know what?
- 8:42It has genuine Because of those sweet scenes between Perry and
- 8:45and the DJ. It has real pathos as well.
- 8:48And it's sad. Like this story has heart.
- 8:52It's it's a twisted kind of heart.
- 8:57And some of the people that die, it's absolutely like, just
- 8:59desserts Joe Bell's death. Where is I think Clive Smith
- 9:03says his toupee falls off. Like the Why is it?
- 9:08He says it's like a shell coming off a clam and exposing, you
- 9:14know, everything that is about this stupid man.
- 9:18Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love it.
- 9:20I love it. And Hugh Walters does a great
- 9:22death over the top. And that's kind of shot between
- 9:252 Daleks, isn't it? Yeah, and nothing.
- 9:29Nothing. Talked cars.
- 9:33Yeah, I know. It's just got so great, isn't
- 9:36it, you know? Why, David?
- 9:37Yeah, I mean, what's? This little box, what does it
- 9:40do? It's never going to happen
- 9:45right. But in an alternative reality, I
- 9:49hope that one day I'll get to be in Doctor Who and I'll read in
- 9:52the script David gets exterminate by Dalek and I'm you
- 9:55know, I'm not. I'm going forward exercise if I
- 9:58really you know I'm doing a full script you.
- 10:01Know, you know, I'm going to get in touch.
- 10:03It happens convention people. And I'm going to say can we
- 10:06please put on Revelation of the Daleks on the stage And I'm
- 10:11going to play Tasm Beka. Who do you want to play?
- 10:21The mutant? No.
- 10:22Who would I play? I'd probably want to play with.
- 10:27The DJ or either that or Joe Bell because he plays the best
- 10:30lines. I'm Drew Bell, somebody who's
- 10:36pretty. Shouldn't be all of a fluster.
- 10:38I like pretty things. And you are very pretty.
- 10:42Aren't you very pretty? Oh, it's so creepy.
- 10:46It's so creepy. So cringe.
- 10:48But it's very funny. And after all people have been
- 10:50perving over Perry, you know, he's the worst.
- 10:54Have a great season, Does she? She doesn't have it.
- 10:56Still, it's someone perving her in every story, pretty much.
- 11:00Yeah, well, she's gonna look so gorgeous.
- 11:02Gorgeous. What look shall we perving,
- 11:05Perry? Shall we?
- 11:07Into Episode 2? Yeah, let's do it.
- 11:10The pace is furious, but I'm sure we'll find things to say.
- 11:15Oh, we will. Oh, we definitely will.
- 11:18I can't wait. Do you want to countdown or
- 11:19shall I count them? Or I think did you count for
- 11:22one? I did count for one, so you
- 11:26count. I'll countdown in tats you count
- 11:28for Part 2. 540 God. 321 go sorry.
- 11:41Oh dear, did you ever see? I was knocking.
- 11:44I do like it. I do like it.
- 11:46Sorry, Sorry. What are you going to say?
- 11:47I'd say was it? How great was this?
- 11:51On the big screen it would be a 5.
- 11:54Oh man, Joe, I already knew this was you.
- 11:56Came. Sorry, didn't you?
- 11:56You were there. Yeah.
- 11:57Yeah, I knew this was funny. Everyone was in fits, a laughter
- 11:59watching it. They were.
- 12:03They really were, yeah. I mean, oh, it looked beautiful
- 12:06on big screen. Beautiful.
- 12:09They were laughing more than they were during six episodes of
- 12:11the Sea Devils, that's for sure. Oh God, do you remember even
- 12:16with the Daleks? Geez.
- 12:18Oh, I liked that one. Lovey.
- 12:20I mean, lovey. No, I liked it.
- 12:22But seven episodes in a row? Wow.
- 12:24Oh, here we go with the polystyrene statue.
- 12:27That's right. Eric Sword was very annoyed
- 12:29because J&T insisted that there was a statue in the story, and
- 12:33Eric Sword was like a vice around my fucking neck.
- 12:35We didn't say fucking because I had to put it in the story.
- 12:40I didn't know that. Yeah, well, I didn't know that.
- 12:45Yeah, it's it. Is it Carl, man?
- 12:52Yeah. That's not explained, is it?
- 12:53Why? Because it's not his blood, is
- 12:54it? It's blood from the statue.
- 12:56But maybe it's a stone's blood and that'll be a big finish way.
- 13:00I think it's just because Davros is a bit sick, you know?
- 13:05Yeah, probably. Well, he's fine.
- 13:08He's finally all hilarious as he's watching.
- 13:14Yeah, yeah, this, this. See, even like this stuff, this
- 13:19looks really great. But all kind of statues around
- 13:23in the big building, like, yeah, it's really, really spectacular.
- 13:28He knows that. Look at that in the background
- 13:29with all the skulls. Did you see that?
- 13:33Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:36Get. This guy with all the cheese.
- 13:38David, are you some kind of weirdo?
- 13:44Always. Always.
- 13:46I mean, I love it. I love this story today.
- 13:52Yeah, this isn't. I know I've said this before,
- 13:55but this is another story I would love, but like to be in a
- 14:00story like this, where A, you get the dialects, B, you get a
- 14:03fantastic script, you get some pretty great lines.
- 14:06I mean, yeah, well, don't you see people in the building
- 14:09there? It's a.
- 14:11RBM building. Just going about their business?
- 14:15Yeah, probably. You probably weren't even
- 14:17allowed to film, though. You know, we barely talked about
- 14:19Davros. And no, we haven't talked about
- 14:21Davros in the tank. You're on Twitter.
- 14:24No. Now it's scary.
- 14:26And this is interesting because now Natasha and Gregory are kind
- 14:30of out of the story. Now that's them kind of dancer.
- 14:35That is very irritable, although they're sort of like.
- 14:38They're in the cell with the Doctor, aren't they?
- 14:40And then he says, right, I'm going to leave you to destroy
- 14:42the Incubators. So they've kind of got a
- 14:44function, but then they get killed by a Dalek in typical
- 14:48areas of war fashion. Yeah, yeah, that's the thing.
- 14:51He doesn't quite know how to get rid of characters, which is a
- 14:54shame. Look at that.
- 14:56Look at how vast that looks. That's a beautiful.
- 14:58Entrance to trunk or repose, although that that bit we've
- 15:02just seen, I've stayed in many convention hotels that look like
- 15:06that. Yeah, me too.
- 15:09But you notice the camera swoops in and follows like it just has
- 15:14a way of visualizing. May I help you?
- 15:20Because Graham Harper didn't think this was a bad
- 15:21performance, did he? That's, I think that's one of
- 15:25the things he says on the commentary.
- 15:26He's he's a bit like, oh, I don't see.
- 15:28I thought she was quite good. You're right on so many things.
- 15:34Do you know what else I think is good?
- 15:36I really like Perry's. I've called her Sherry and Kerry
- 15:39now. I really like Perry's costume in
- 15:42Cherie Blair. Yeah, that that's, yeah.
- 15:45It's the most costume, yeah. David, it's a sexy computer.
- 15:54This stupid hard kiss and what you'll?
- 15:56Wear. I mean, that's a It's a nice
- 16:02touch though, isn't it? That's sexy computer voice.
- 16:04Yeah, although I was saying this, no, my friend Harrison,
- 16:11who has done one of these, end of time we're currently going
- 16:14through because he's never seen it.
- 16:16And I said, and this is so true in Doctor Who, why is it always
- 16:21a woman voice? Why is it always a sexy woman
- 16:23voice when it's like an Oracle or something?
- 16:25Because we had Underworld, where there's a sexy Oracle that the
- 16:28word Planet has got a sexy female voice that's, you know,
- 16:32we'd love a sexy female voice too.
- 16:35We do. And you're right, there's not so
- 16:38many sexy. Well, no, because what would
- 16:40happen is you get James Breed doing it or something like that,
- 16:42wouldn't you? You know?
- 16:43But what? Lord?
- 16:45It would be a voice like that. Yeah, that's true.
- 16:49Oh my God. This this kills me.
- 16:52You can't even press a button properly.
- 16:53Sorry. You can also access our
- 16:59personalized service, This is the DJ.
- 17:07I think you're from. Yeah.
- 17:08OK, I think it's it's a really underrated performance.
- 17:13It's Alexis. He's brilliant in it.
- 17:17Boy, he wears lots of different hats, doesn't he?
- 17:19He loves to go to this. This location as well, William
- 17:26got mentioned William Corn as well, particularly these two.
- 17:28I mean nothing. Again, they're pretty doing them
- 17:34together. The sort of pickish, you know,
- 17:36side of boss stock and you know the brand.
- 17:41If you if you skip back to the, if you skip back to the late
- 17:4570s, I think this character would be really overplayed in
- 17:49sort of the late Williams era. But he's so understated William
- 17:52Gord that you believe character and he's kind of got intensity
- 17:55about him and he's got funny lines and I will say it kind of
- 18:02someone else was saying it's so interesting casting someone like
- 18:05William Born in this role because then he was known for
- 18:09doing rather rubbish sitcoms wasn't he like he was he was in
- 18:13a lot of those like rather rubbish 1870s.
- 18:16So then cast him in Doctor Who where he's playing the
- 18:19mercenary. It's it's a really interesting
- 18:23choice casting and again a bit of Lexisel, I mean he was known
- 18:27for the young ones and all the alternatives comedy.
- 18:30So it's an interesting choice to cast him as a DJ.
- 18:35Well, clearly Eric's award was fairly obsessed with the
- 18:37performance because he went on to do the Orsini comic books,
- 18:40didn't he? Yes, he did.
- 18:41Yeah, he's still doing, I think, isn't he?
- 18:43Still. But I've not.
- 18:46I've not read. Do you know if this was one
- 18:49particularly dreary sitcom? He was in that.
- 18:51But when I was younger, I absolutely loved it.
- 18:53I went back and watched it recently.
- 18:54It's really terrible. It's William Gordon, Penelope
- 18:58Keith in Next of Kin. I've seen the DVD come that and
- 19:01it doesn't look dreadful, you and Mark seemed to like.
- 19:07We watch a lot. We watch a lot of bad telly.
- 19:12Yeah, I can tell. But yeah, no, it's a really
- 19:18interesting choice of cast, really.
- 19:21And look, things like that. I guess you've just seen it
- 19:24there. The shots, he doesn't shoot the
- 19:26dialect's head on, he shoots them going past.
- 19:28Or there was a bit in the first episode where nice talk came
- 19:32into view. He just, he does it so
- 19:34differently for the directors who I mean, I would say Matthew
- 19:36Robinson directed them quite well in Resurrection and but
- 19:41especially in the 70s there was a lot of like the camera there.
- 19:46They walked across the set like you know they look a bit
- 19:48battered. It feels like now they
- 19:51especially Graham has made them a bit more terrifying, bit more
- 19:55scary. They were quite lucky, all
- 19:58three, eight. The Darlings did really well in
- 20:01the 80s. We had Matthew Robinson, Graham
- 20:04and Andrew Morgan and they all did a brilliant job of bringing
- 20:09them to life and and I think they sort of got better with
- 20:13each subsequent story. Definitely, definitely.
- 20:18I love the color of them in this as well.
- 20:19I love the white sexiest. I was going to have a Dalek.
- 20:24It would be an Imperial Dalek. Would it?
- 20:27I always said I'd go for a remembrance 1.
- 20:30Oh no, hang on. That's the right one, isn't it?
- 20:32Is that Imperial? I just said the Renegades.
- 20:35The Dark Ones are the Renegades. No, I'd want the.
- 20:39I want the golden white ones deal about the Imperial so.
- 20:42I'd have the It's just a bit where he goes.
- 20:50I would rather have your money. And here we go.
- 20:55We're going to have the very Cam line.
- 20:57Oh, can you do it? I'd be ready to, dreadful man,
- 21:04but I was the food supply for the whole she, that is.
- 21:14That is the line she makes whole have about 5 syllables.
- 21:23Oh look, Jenny Thomas is having a bit of trouble just walking in
- 21:26the straight line there. Oh, don't, don't.
- 21:31It's oh, I love this, he goes. Yeah, he is.
- 21:32I'm taking this gentleman to see the great healer.
- 21:34Oh, that should be a contest worth missing.
- 21:38He is funny. I mean, he's a horrible protest
- 21:41creep, but he is. He plays it so well and it's
- 21:46interesting as well because obviously, you know, it's a
- 21:48thing at the time. By the end of the season, was
- 21:50run out of budget. But you don't see it in this
- 21:53tool. There's not.
- 21:55There's not a single set where you go that looks a bit cheap.
- 21:58Well, that looks a bit. You see it in Time Lash, don't
- 22:01you? Which is old.
- 22:02Yeah, Time lash. I mean, it's a bit of carpet in
- 22:05it, but then I think, I don't know.
- 22:08I think maybe Revelation could look as Darf as Time Lash, but
- 22:11there's just been a lot of care lavished on it.
- 22:14Definitely fairly lavish. What's it got to do with you?
- 22:20This is a really, if you watch her watch, just watch her in the
- 22:23scene. Look at the fact that watch she
- 22:27played. It's just so weird.
- 22:30She looks so lost. She's like, what's going on that
- 22:37those golden bumps glow beautifully?
- 22:39I mean now that is, I mean it's unusual color scheme for the
- 22:43dark. Do your golden bump.
- 22:46I'll beg your pardon, Chris. Am I too glow?
- 22:52It depends how well polished they are.
- 22:54Well, I mean, it's very strange here.
- 22:57You know the doctors sent Perry off with a sex pest.
- 23:01It's not a great idea, is it? It's not one of his most every
- 23:07five days. I met Alexis Cell once as well.
- 23:10We're just going to go from around a day.
- 23:12And I met him about 3 days. After the London bombings,
- 23:18London was completely dead and I don't actually remember much
- 23:20about meeting him apart from that I got a photo with him and
- 23:23he was signing the DVD of Revelation of the Daleks.
- 23:27All I remember and he's got the biggest fucking signature in the
- 23:30world. I've never met someone who's got
- 23:33such a big signature. My copy, my DVD copy of
- 23:36Revelation of the Daleks, The whole thing is taken up by him.
- 23:40Putting to David from Alexaell is ridiculous.
- 23:43It's embarrassing. Going over to.
- 23:46Can you just want someone to put your signature on?
- 23:49You know, he's probably had a prestigious career.
- 23:51The only other thing I know him from, apart from Doctor Who is
- 23:56that song Hello, John got a new mo.
- 23:58Ah. Do you remember that song?
- 24:01No, I don't. He's going on the street.
- 24:03I know John got a new mo and he's pointing at things like
- 24:06that. This is balsa wood.
- 24:08I mean, it's just him making up the song as he goes a lot.
- 24:11It's terrible. I saw him.
- 24:14Recently an episode of Casualty pops up in an episode of Yeah,
- 24:20well, he proves this scene. He's capable of giving a good
- 24:23performance. Do you know, I was going to say
- 24:26Nicola Bryant shows her comedy chops at the beginning of that
- 24:29in a bit with Joe Bell. Her timing is excellent.
- 24:33Then she really shows her acting chops in her scenes with the DJ
- 24:37where she starts going on about being homesick as well.
- 24:39I really feel like they missed a treat with Nicola Bryant that
- 24:43they could have given her. Yeah, it does that material.
- 24:46And I and we were discussing, we started recording mind what's
- 24:50not a fair story That shows it doesn't.
- 24:52I mean, in God, that shows her range, doesn't it?
- 24:56It doesn't feel like at this point they've started properly
- 24:59writing for her. Apart from I think that was what
- 25:01always slightly annoyed me about sixth Harry was they were always
- 25:05quite windy. Whereas I feel like this is the
- 25:08first story that actually they're not.
- 25:11They're just here to have an adventure.
- 25:12I mean, I know they're a bit widget in it, but I know what
- 25:16you mean. Very quickly dissipate and then
- 25:19and then just working together. And in this whole second
- 25:22episode, I don't even have one harsh word to say to each other.
- 25:25They're just both trying to solve this problem.
- 25:28And then you kick into mysterious planet and you got
- 25:31those wonderful scenes down in the subway station where she
- 25:35realizes this Earth and yeah, that the good material
- 25:38continues. And I will say this is probably
- 25:41a really controversial opinion, but I like, yeah, cuz I like
- 25:45being at the end of my talk when colleague walks about his death
- 25:49or the best bit to acting I've ever seen.
- 25:52Oh yeah, yeah. Well, the bit where he's like,
- 25:54you killed Perry. Yeah, that bit.
- 25:57Anyways. And I have every I'm finding out
- 25:59what it is, yeah. Beautiful bit of acting.
- 26:02I think he's a great actor and I I I do think there is something
- 26:06in. I think he makes the best of
- 26:10some shunky material in season 22 and 23.
- 26:14But. He's a fabulous actor.
- 26:15He's a fabulous but not only does he do that, but when he's
- 26:19given good material and there's good material as well, he shines
- 26:23so bright. He's.
- 26:26I mean, I think he is the most underrated actor for sure.
- 26:31And and you know, it's a bit predictable to say his
- 26:34performance is on Big Finish, have shown what he can do.
- 26:38But I'll just say go what? Go listen to the one Doctor, the
- 26:42Pirates and Davros. You got one which is an out and
- 26:46out comedy, one which is a musical tragedy and one which is
- 26:51a drama and you can see his range.
- 26:54Absolutely. Just going to put it say we've
- 26:58got our first death coming and as I say, I love an
- 27:01extermination and we've got to see what more could you want
- 27:04from someone? Yeah, well, and the way
- 27:09longingly, it just says it says volumes, doesn't it?
- 27:14And here we go. It's my favorite line, and the
- 27:16whole thing just got to keep quiet, go on.
- 27:21Difficult it is, to get a good second.
- 27:29Ain't a lot, no. But no, you're absolutely right.
- 27:31And I think that's what I was saying earlier about I think
- 27:34he's such a great ambassador for the show.
- 27:36You know, he's he's always been there when the show was off
- 27:39there. You know, he's, I know he goes
- 27:43to a lot of conventions, but he's always there for the fans.
- 27:45Like he loves me and him, he's always supported.
- 27:48In terms of when Jody Whisker was announced, he was, you know,
- 27:52one of the few people that actually was like, yeah, why
- 27:55not. I've been saying this for years
- 27:57and. Yeah, I I It's hard not to love
- 28:00Colin, even though he does wear Crocs and even though I have
- 28:04heard those anecdotes 100 times, I literally I can hear him
- 28:07because he's a rat concert so he can spin a yarn and he always
- 28:10gives me something a little bit different.
- 28:14Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 28:17Oh God, did you hear? Did you hear what, Joe?
- 28:19He goes. You're a very naughty man,
- 28:22Target. Naughty Man.
- 28:29See, that's really clear though, because the in the background
- 28:32and it's just, oh, it's yeah, it's all well and the I still
- 28:35get the others. So you're just very aware
- 28:37there's something in there, you know, sort of twitching.
- 28:40Which again, in a lot of 70, they just they wouldn't move.
- 28:45Yeah, would they Look at less of Daleks.
- 28:48There's four Daleks and one of them's just like that.
- 28:50Just doesn't move. I just.
- 28:53I just keep imagining Jenny Thomasson looking at Terry
- 28:56Malloy as Davros going, oh that must have been a nasty accident.
- 28:59Whatever happened, you know, if she genuinely fall, that's what
- 29:03you look like. Do you know what?
- 29:05Do you know what it is? I think, well, I've got this new
- 29:09term, which is called the Bob Brooklyn School of Acting,
- 29:16Right, Which is when, Oh, look, this is the shot.
- 29:18Sorry. That's a great shot.
- 29:25In school of acting, which is when you have an actor say
- 29:28something like that, they haven't got a clue what they're
- 29:30saying. By God they're going to say it
- 29:32with conviction is what Barbara Flynn didn't flux they were they
- 29:35were saying it in that way. She ain't got a clue what she's
- 29:38talking about but she is damn well going to say it like she
- 29:40knows and it you notice it a lot in other who but unfortunately
- 29:44Jenny does not have under that in this story.
- 29:49I'm going to make a a small defense.
- 29:51I do think she does that thing we just watched.
- 29:55I don't think she. I don't think she's terrible in
- 29:57that scene. I know you think I'm mad.
- 30:00I do. I think you like Beryl.
- 30:02Reed's a great example. She ain't got a clue.
- 30:05She talked about, but she. I'm not going to say it like she
- 30:07knows what she's talking about. Joan Sims is another one.
- 30:10I mean, Joan Sims, OK, It's terrible.
- 30:12You know she's going to say those lines and you know.
- 30:17Sound like she knows what she and you.
- 30:19You do get it. You do get.
- 30:20That's why I call it the Barbara Flynn School of you know, it's
- 30:24the ultimate example of that, don't you?
- 30:26Ultimate example of the Barbara Flynn is Jacqueline Pierce, who
- 30:31genuinely says she did Four Seasons of play driven.
- 30:34She had didn't have a clue. She had no, no clue about that
- 30:38fiction. And yet, she created one of the
- 30:41most memorable characters ever. I remember when we watched Flux.
- 30:48Remember when we watched Flux together at America?
- 30:51And I think I'd turn to you afterwards.
- 30:53I mean, what you're talking about.
- 30:55Damn well did it. She did it.
- 30:56Damn. Well, there was at least five
- 30:59men crammed into your bedroom that day, wasn't it?
- 31:02Lucky me, eh? Oh, I love this one.
- 31:09I love when Colin tries to take him on and it just gets smacked
- 31:13to the floor. But then he's like, we're gonna
- 31:14ask what you're doing here. No.
- 31:16You can ask, but only a fool's going to get an answer.
- 31:19Suspect an answer. Oh, here we go.
- 31:24This is the two best deaths, I think, in the whole thing.
- 31:27He wants you dead. Impossible.
- 31:33I'm his most loyal servant. When you can fire with Tarkus,
- 31:43who was a joke. What she did The place wouldn't
- 31:52function without me. It's already now.
- 31:59I know you're lying. I expect you.
- 32:01It's tremendous plans for this place.
- 32:03You lie frequently as you pick up women.
- 32:07Oh, so that's what this is all about?
- 32:12Go on, let's do the whole thing. Oh God, I loved you everything.
- 32:18I'm talking to you. Oh no, I'm a little bit behind.
- 32:24Hang on. I need to subtle.
- 32:28OK, you've spent two. 100 pounds alone in this preparation room.
- 32:33Somebody as impressionable as you should lavish a little more
- 32:37time on the living right instead of fantasizing with debt.
- 32:42I could help you do what? Do you honestly think I'd be
- 32:47interested in you? I had to pick up the women.
- 32:51I would rather run away with my mother than own a horny little
- 32:56creep like. You you were cruel.
- 32:59But Even so, think like think for a fat boat and it is like
- 33:08you me, but my figure is the height of fashion.
- 33:13To know. Sorry.
- 33:16Oh, come on. Don't you dare stop now.
- 33:19Louder. Come on.
- 33:21Great healer. Oh, to earn his favor, I have to
- 33:25kill you. Get on with your work.
- 33:32I hate you to know. Don't know what's really just.
- 33:39I don't know if you you probably you probably mentioned it on the
- 33:42commentary but it's a juicy book Graham Hoff was saying about he
- 33:44wants. I'll just take a There's only
- 33:51been one other time when me and the guests have done every
- 33:55single line in the scene. And that is.
- 33:57Hang on, I'm finished it. Hang on, Why did I do it?
- 34:08That's That's awful death, Jenny.
- 34:10That's a terrible death. Sorry, the only other scene that
- 34:14I've done lying for Lila that with a guest is Romana and
- 34:18Souldide in episode four of The Horns of Nymon I.
- 34:21Don't know. We did do a couple of paradise,
- 34:23I think, didn't we? I think we might have.
- 34:25Oh boy, that was so much fun. And Silver Nemesis, what were
- 34:28you going to say? Sorry, you're going?
- 34:29To make a point then I was going to say Graham Harper, I think
- 34:33says on the commentary, he wants to make that more and.
- 34:37More dark that see then she said he wanted to see the syringe
- 34:42get. It was like, but they said it
- 34:45was too much for the television, because he said he was such a
- 34:48grotesque and horrible character that he wanted you know, it
- 34:51probably to see the syringe go in and the liquid go, but they
- 34:55cut it. Which I think it's a shame in a
- 34:56way, but then maybe it would have been a bit too much
- 35:00possibly. It does seem to him to be quite
- 35:01great. I don't know why we're even
- 35:02talking now. We might have finished the
- 35:04episode now, because that's been dense.
- 35:07The toupee falling off just makes that there.
- 35:09Flow, yeah. Oh yeah, but you know, we've got
- 35:13still to come. This is a highly directional
- 35:16ultrasonic beam of rock'n'roll it.
- 35:20Kills. It's a bit bloodshed from here
- 35:28on it, isn't it? It's like quick succession of
- 35:30characters getting killed and it really feels like the plot's
- 35:33accelerating as well, like everyone's in danger now, like
- 35:37sort of everything's been exposed.
- 35:39Everybody, they they he knows, Oh no, we don't know that Davros
- 35:43knows that Orsini is there. We still think that Orsini is is
- 35:47going to get away with it and that's a brilliant scene when
- 35:51you've got the lure of the the tank.
- 35:57What's? What's?
- 35:58You were just saying it a minute ago?
- 36:00You know, it feels like everyone's in danger again.
- 36:04Brilliant, a bit direction, brilliant bit of music.
- 36:06Because you feel like that they're all in trouble now at
- 36:08this point. I mean, even that little shot of
- 36:10the Dialects on the screen with them, you know, builds up the
- 36:14tension well. And what I really love about
- 36:16that is then you get the dialogue bit of Perry going,
- 36:20they're coming and it really feels like they're a threat.
- 36:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, they are coming.
- 36:25I mean, killers. And it's really nice that Alexi
- 36:27sales character is then like sort of being a bit the hero
- 36:30now. Although I will say, as much as
- 36:34I love Alexis saying in the story, don't stand out in front
- 36:36of you, Ray Bean. Well, how do you know they're
- 36:38all there? Yeah, that is silly.
- 36:41I do love that gun though, made out of music.
- 36:45I mean, I don't understand how it works, but it's very cool.
- 36:48Brilliant. And we're about to.
- 36:52I'm not yet. I think Natasha, yeah, Natasha
- 36:54and Gregory outline for this world.
- 36:55They're going to be. You see, this is great, this
- 36:58whole scene with Orsini and Bostock trying to kill the other
- 37:01Davros and the tank lure and him blowing off his foot and all of
- 37:05that. The doctor's not involved in any
- 37:07of this and yet absolutely riveted to find out what's going
- 37:12on. But I dare.
- 37:14But I don't think it, you know, takes away it.
- 37:17It still feels like it's Doctor Who.
- 37:19Do you know what I mean? It doesn't take away the fact
- 37:20that the Doctor's not ending it. Just like love of monsters.
- 37:24Just like Blink, you know? Oh, look, Malloy's ranting.
- 37:31Now I am Davros. He's so great, he's brilliant,
- 37:38and I think this is even more of a brilliant the way that Graham
- 37:43Harper manages to generate some dynamism in the studio.
- 37:47Now, I said he does it on location, but the fact that he
- 37:50manages to pull off an action sequel like this in the studio,
- 37:54it's great. I forget.
- 37:55They wouldn't have. They wouldn't have had much
- 37:56time, would they? They would have had what, couple
- 37:58of hours to do. I don't know how it was in the
- 38:0145 minute time because obviously in those days they do.
- 38:05In the old days it'd be 4 minutes, but they haven't got
- 38:08long to do that. It's impressive, but it looks so
- 38:11good. I watched just a couple of the
- 38:13studio trimmed, you know, the sort of the them preparing for
- 38:17shots. I mean, he's literally running
- 38:18around like a flea on a griddle, right?
- 38:21Because she's this bit you turn, you turn that way, do a
- 38:23reaction, let's go. He's trying to get in as many
- 38:25shots as he can. And I think as you were saying
- 38:30in the first episode, a lot of people probably wouldn't have
- 38:33liked that because he was so high pace, high energy.
- 38:37They probably wanted to do the best that they could.
- 38:39So then they were stepping up their game.
- 38:42Makes sense. It's interesting to know, isn't
- 38:44it, that the cast of Andrazani and the cast of Revelation?
- 38:48It is two of the two of the the best lots of acting you're going
- 38:51to see in the show. Yeah, yeah, definitely,
- 38:54definitely. And even doesn't say the.
- 38:57Lineless Critic Davidson says that he he thought that there
- 39:01just wasn't the the dynamism in any of the directors.
- 39:07He just didn't think it existed. And then he met Graham Harper,
- 39:10and he was like, no, it could have been there all along in In
- 39:13my Run. Didn't he say it?
- 39:16Had Graham directed the season before, he would have stayed on.
- 39:19It was only when obviously he it was gonna go that for his own.
- 39:22This is what I could have had. I'll stay on if he does every
- 39:24story. Yeah, yeah, I'm quite.
- 39:29I'm quite amazed that he only did two, actually.
- 39:31I would have thought he but you know now something.
- 39:35OK. This whole thing about the
- 39:37president. Yeah.
- 39:38And it has been sort of mentioned quite a bit.
- 39:40The president's wife, the stiff is there.
- 39:42She's been injected a lot to keep her fresh.
- 39:45But the idea isn't it, is that they're inviting the president
- 39:49here so Davros can basically bump him off and take over.
- 39:53Is that, is that right? And so they sent a message to
- 39:56the president saying there's Daleks here, you're going to be
- 39:59murdered, Get out of it. So essentially, that's the plot
- 40:02over really. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know that's
- 40:06yeah, I mean, that's what I don't think it's ever actually
- 40:08properly said, but that's what student oh, here we go.
- 40:14How can you say such things? Great healer.
- 40:17I am pained by such a remark. You fooled you in the seal.
- 40:25That's a true matter of honor. Now we both die satisfied.
- 40:30Do you know on the on the new version right?
- 40:35I don't know if you noticed this.
- 40:36On the PFI they put in a sound effect when the knife goes in.
- 40:40It sounds like bones cracking or something.
- 40:42It's hard. Yeah, it's that's a horrible
- 40:46death. I mean, that's surprised that
- 40:48one got through, really. Eric's award says in the
- 40:52commentary he wishes now, although it's great because her
- 40:55death is great with a knife. But he wishes he'd had Kara just
- 41:00hold out to the last button and go What's up then?
- 41:06A great thing, Bob. Thank you, Cara.
- 41:11See, Davros knows. Davros knows all of it.
- 41:14He knew or seen. He was there.
- 41:16He knew it was a bomb. He's he's way ahead of
- 41:19everybody. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:22And there's also a very rare thing to happen that they killed
- 41:25the biggest guest star off quite.
- 41:27Not early. I mean, you know, still got, but
- 41:31you know, quite early in the episode.
- 41:33The way she holds her back, you know it's almost as if a knife
- 41:36goes through and out the other side.
- 41:39Yeah. Can I just can I just say now
- 41:44the award for the best death in revelation with Alex goes to
- 41:47Alexis Cell for sure. Just, you know, I genuinely
- 41:54it's, yeah, it's a it's a death that.
- 41:58It's the death that we all won, you know?
- 42:01Well, and you really like you say you really feel for it.
- 42:03I feel really sad when he dies. I think what?
- 42:06Adds to it is that we cut to Colin and Perry is screaming and
- 42:11I think the Doctor thinks that Perry is dead at that point, do
- 42:18you not think? Do.
- 42:21You not think that? I think.
- 42:22I think the doctor thinks Perry is dead because you hear her
- 42:25going. You murdered him.
- 42:26Why did you have it? And then she cuts out and he has
- 42:30a moment and then he just goes, right.
- 42:32I've got to get him with it. I didn't thought of it like
- 42:35that, never thought like that before.
- 42:38I'm sure he didn't think, well, they're going to take a captive.
- 42:41They probably thought that they kicked, that they killed you.
- 42:43Yeah, yeah, this is. This is another thing I've
- 42:48realized and everyone did podcast.
- 42:50That's how much I'm obsessed with people getting killed.
- 42:52Not to I think you mentioned. A lot of people that come with
- 42:55this thing are, you know I'm bit disturbed, all the pyramids,
- 42:58Mars the other week and the fella was loving every death.
- 43:01Well, I think Alexis Cell gets the best death do we have.
- 43:07A Oh, I do like what's saying he's deaf, though, when he's
- 43:11stroking bus dog. Oh yeah, but I'll be honest.
- 43:16Don't get a scream. You want to scream?
- 43:18You know you want to. Well, he's dignified.
- 43:21He's a Knight of the Grand Order of Oval.
- 43:23That's true. Yeah, that's.
- 43:27True. This whole scene with David,
- 43:29this is a great and it's 2 great actors just bouncing off each
- 43:36other. And it works that the do with
- 43:38them in real life are such good mates, such good mates.
- 43:43Do you know this? Do you know the story about
- 43:44Davrot's nose, nose and fingers? No, no.
- 43:50So in the scene where this is about to come up with bus stop
- 43:53shoots Davros's hand and it and he sort of like he kicks down
- 43:58the way Colin said that they he wanted to do a shot of it going
- 44:02up his nose, but they didn't get time to shoot it.
- 44:04But he says he still has one of Davros's fingers, and he's like
- 44:08collection. That must be rank now, yeah?
- 44:11Yeah, but they didn't get time to film it, sadly.
- 44:13But he wanted a shot of the fingers exploding 1 going.
- 44:17He could sell that for a fortune.
- 44:19Yeah, I know, I know. Yeah, actually.
- 44:23But what what I really love about this scene is I think this
- 44:27is the best Doctor villain scene of the season.
- 44:31Agent Colin walks in and just owns the place, even though he's
- 44:35never been here before that Frost gets all this exposition
- 44:38over. This is why I invited you here,
- 44:40blah blah blah. I'll lured you in.
- 44:43They reveal the horror of what's going on and the Doctor shows
- 44:47appropriate sort of moral outrage, you know?
- 44:50Never in their worst nightmares that they ever think they'd come
- 44:53back as Daleks did you bother to tell anyone that they might be
- 44:58relative. That is a great line.
- 45:00That's another great. Line.
- 45:03Certainly not. Not if it gave them the
- 45:05opportunity to become Masters of the Universe we call consumer
- 45:11resistance, yeah. Lesser people, would they be
- 45:15left to rot? You should know me better than
- 45:18that, Doctor. And so it's great dialogue as
- 45:22well between the I think it's great.
- 45:26Another brilliant set as well. I think the set, no, it doesn't
- 45:28look like doesn't look like a studio.
- 45:30It looks like the actual rooms in a in the city.
- 45:36Oh, it's so gross. Just the thought that this, this
- 45:39sort of relief aid food is coming at people in people's
- 45:44dead relatives. I think it's a I think it's a
- 45:47brilliant idea. I think it's a brilliant idea
- 45:50for script what I'm saying it should.
- 45:53I was wondering then for a second, yeah, that's a good
- 45:57idea. No, but I think no.
- 45:59I think it's a brilliant idea and it's such a twist as well,
- 46:02because you don't expect it. But you know what they ask?
- 46:05The next line is the most the most telling, and it's still
- 46:09relevant today, is when Davros goes they were grateful for the
- 46:13food it allowed them to go on living.
- 46:18And that's relevant today in a in a sort of society where
- 46:21population growth is out of control and things are becoming
- 46:24scarce for whatever reason. And it's it's a great twist as
- 46:30well because in some who you need that twist not long before
- 46:33the end to have it, you know to to rank the story up.
- 46:37And I think that's a great little final bit of my because
- 46:41you don't know what Cara is. You know she's the food supply,
- 46:46but you just think it's the food supply.
- 46:47You don't realize it's actually all the dead people that is
- 46:52she's marketing all these dead people out to.
- 46:57And what's awards done as well? He's ceded the story for once.
- 47:01So Orsini has come here with the bomb to blow up Davros, which is
- 47:05the bomb they then use to destroy the Daleks that are
- 47:09there, and then they've already established that the flowers can
- 47:13be already made food supply. So the Galaxy isn't going to go
- 47:17starving because we can harvest it and farm it.
- 47:19So it's all tied up very neatly as well.
- 47:24Oh. God, his fingers and a bus stop.
- 47:30Did you notice the doctor punched those two guards in the
- 47:32nuts? Oh my God, those fingers on the
- 47:38floor. I don't believe it, but I've
- 47:42heard some people say that the renegade adults coming in and
- 47:47sweeping Davros away is a bit anti climactic.
- 47:51But do you know what I think actually remembrance salvages
- 47:55this. Because it does is then
- 47:57establish that sort of hatred between the two sets of Daleks,
- 48:01which is then picked. Think of it as a trailer for
- 48:03Remembrance. You know, Yeah, a prequel.
- 48:06There we go. I don't.
- 48:08I don't mind that as much. I don't mind.
- 48:10I mean, also as a kid, I was like, oh, dude, Alex, Oh my God.
- 48:14I don't. I don't think you, you know,
- 48:16also in a way, as you say, it makes more sense because had he
- 48:21died in this and then he'd come back in remembrance as he is in
- 48:25a way. I mean, I know it's tough to
- 48:26who, but credibility would have been a bit, yeah, for once.
- 48:31For once. So Sir, Wall's thinking about
- 48:33it. That's what he normally does.
- 48:34He normally has the villain die at the end and then go, Well,
- 48:36I'm indestructible. The universe knows that.
- 48:39And you go, yeah, I liked how sorry.
- 48:43I liked how that Dalek just been shot there like the white one
- 48:48when the others came in a little bit like, oh, I'm going now, but
- 48:53I'm outnumbered. I stand around there.
- 48:54Thank you for it. Is is the bit where the Doctor
- 49:00goes to shake Davros's hands, or lack of hands, the funniest
- 49:05moment in the whole story? I think that's so funny.
- 49:09That and that and no arm in trying.
- 49:12We could miss, yeah. The lines are a bit cold, but
- 49:16I'll tell you what, that's so sick.
- 49:19It's just that his hand blown off and the way that Dan Ross
- 49:22goes to it goes to extend his hand and then realizes it goes,
- 49:26it's really funny. Damn well, the doll, it's a bit
- 49:33thick here, Doctor. No, they don't care, do they?
- 49:40At this point, they just. Nicholas says that, Colin said.
- 49:44Doctor Who in the rehearsal and John Nathan Turner leapt up and
- 49:47went No, oh, there we are, There we go.
- 49:55That's so funny. I hate, you know, I hate things
- 49:58like that. But I hated it in the Moffett
- 49:59era, when the whole thing was Doctor Who.
- 50:03Don't do that. Don't do that.
- 50:07The. Character.
- 50:12So that's it without. So we've got to get rid of these
- 50:13Daleks now. We just happened to have this
- 50:17ready made bomb. We've also got pension gun and a
- 50:21tiny bomb as well. I mean also that is the most
- 50:25dangerous bit, the bomb on the Dalek.
- 50:27So he decided, I was thinking with Perry, you know, it's like,
- 50:33but you put your assistant in danger.
- 50:35Why don't? No.
- 50:36It's like putting the battery car down the coal mine.
- 50:39It's like in danger. If the bomb goes off before she
- 50:42gets over there. It's only her that's going to
- 50:44die. Yeah.
- 50:47Like it would have made more sense to have no one of them
- 50:52shot the gun and the but no, Harry's put the.
- 50:56I'll let you see it in a minute. I think when she when she does
- 50:58it, she's yeah. Look sort of, tentatively runs.
- 51:05It's a bit like Advocate the console in the earth.
- 51:07Shock when his nose is going to blow up.
- 51:09Do you? Know what That Doctor's blowing?
- 51:15Blowing out the Dalek ice stalk. It's great.
- 51:18With the machine gun, I could do a bit more of that.
- 51:23Yeah, people object to the Doctor having a gun, but I don't
- 51:25mind really. I love the whole movie.
- 51:32I liked. I liked that Russell did that.
- 51:34But also, that's a shame because.
- 51:38Of course we talked about that at the end of time, didn't we,
- 51:40When he had a pistol. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:45Oh. My God, can I tell you
- 51:47something, right? Mark goes to me at the end of
- 51:50this. He goes, Do you think you can
- 51:52buy those purple flowers? I said.
- 51:53Why? He goes, well, he goes, I'll
- 51:55decorate the living room with him.
- 51:57And I went. I'm not turning.
- 51:59Car out into a Funeral Home, I said.
- 52:00What are you going to have next? Me on a slab?
- 52:04Hasn't beaker in your house? You're nearly there.
- 52:07David, thanks to you. Tasm Beaker is in my house.
- 52:10I know she's six times. She's everywhere, Everywhere.
- 52:15I haven't had a guest yet asked the question, Why do you have
- 52:18that strange woman you know when you know when you buy something
- 52:24online and you laugh because you buy it?
- 52:29That was what happened with that I just saw.
- 52:31It was so when I clicked the buy button and put my like details
- 52:34in I was like. Someday I'll get you for it.
- 52:40I'll get you a gift that's just as evil.
- 52:43All right? I'll just say right.
- 52:45Because I do find these endings where people sacrifice
- 52:49themselves terrible. When Kosharmas sacrificed
- 52:52himself at the end of the time with his children so you can't
- 52:55remember him, it's so unmemorable.
- 52:56And it was just like so. Tweet it.
- 52:59And such a disappointing ending. But it's been established that
- 53:05the Knights of the granddaughter of Oberon are very honorable.
- 53:08And so I think it works here. And I just think there's such
- 53:11dignity in his performance. It works as well.
- 53:14Do you think Orsini was gay, though?
- 53:15Do you think they were gay couple?
- 53:17Could be. Oh, I would imagine so.
- 53:19Yeah, he likes a bit of rough. You know, talk his a little.
- 53:22You know, that's another. 10 This is so funny.
- 53:25They're talking about Nicola Briars, talking about this
- 53:27corridor because it was 3 foot long.
- 53:29They kept asking me to run up and down it and make it seem
- 53:32like it was a vast, sort of cat sort of honeycomb of corridors.
- 53:37She's like, really? You are testing my acting to the
- 53:40limit here, but then you don't feel that again when you're
- 53:45watching it. You don't.
- 53:46It doesn't feel like it's the way it shot.
- 53:53Yeah, you won't get that one off it.
- 53:55No, I like those pyramids. They've got as well behind the
- 53:58IBM building there in the model. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:02Yeah, yeah, there, mind you, there's they're doing the sort
- 54:05of Egyptian thing with some of the set decoration as well.
- 54:08And the Peacock and the yeah, and the the body, isn't it on
- 54:11slap. Very Egyptian.
- 54:14Yeah, shaking the camera there. Original starter Yeah, it works.
- 54:22So where exactly was the Doctor gonna take Perry then?
- 54:30Blackpool. Blackpool.
- 54:33Do we think Blackpool? Yeah, I don't know.
- 54:38I mean, having just listened to the nightmare for our Big
- 54:40Finish, they shouldn't bother us.
- 54:44Isn't it boring? It is.
- 54:47But yeah, it is, right. The other thing I would say from
- 54:52this story, my only other negative, is that if they knew
- 54:55that this was going on hiatus, surely you'd film something a
- 55:00bit different and just sort of going, I'll take you to and then
- 55:07credit. Surely you'd want to, I don't
- 55:09know, film a different ending. I don't know if just the TARDIS
- 55:13disappearing or I'm just, I don't know.
- 55:16I just, I mean, obviously they probably didn't know when they
- 55:19were from yet, but you'd find another bit that was not.
- 55:22Suitable. Weird enough, I feel like if you
- 55:25are going to go on hiatus or end a season, having the doctor say
- 55:28I'll take you to and then the possibilities are endless.
- 55:31As to how he could have ended that sentence, that's true.
- 55:34It's quite enticing, that's true.
- 55:36It's a shame we ever found out what he was going to say because
- 55:39just having the the ambiguity is quite nice.
- 55:44Well, it was. It was film does Blackpool,
- 55:47isn't it? Yeah, I think in the script it
- 55:51was saying, I'll take you to Blackpool led into the original
- 55:58at the end. What is very odd is how he can
- 56:01be that understated and charming in that last scene there with
- 56:04her. Yeah, we've got a whole season
- 56:06of him going. That's bad.
- 56:10Bad. Yeah, I know, I know.
- 56:13Yeah, it's Yeah, it's. This just shows how good of a
- 56:17doctor was. But also, and it's a shame that
- 56:23he. It shows you that this version
- 56:25of Sward, Doctor Who, this sort of more violent, weirder version
- 56:31which which started with sort of and just no sort of 21 and then
- 56:36became 22, that it could really work.
- 56:40And that whole thing of, you know, Eric, say what didn't like
- 56:45Colin as the Doctor he thought he was next fast.
- 56:50But he seems to have written him quite well in this.
- 56:52Well, I mean, Pip and Jane Baker watched it.
- 56:55So when it's very odd, Colin, you know, you hardly appear in
- 56:58that story that you did at the end of the season with the
- 57:01Daleks and Colin Baker. Yeah, Eric.
- 57:03So Ward wrote that one. It does take him a while to do
- 57:08anything of relevance, yeah. But then again I, you know it's
- 57:15hard it's hard to write a script when you're 2 lead actors are in
- 57:21panto and that's the you know I think I think that's that's the
- 57:25problem I have is people go well they're not in it that much when
- 57:27you get told as a writer by the way the first episode can't have
- 57:32your two lead in characters in it much because they're in a
- 57:35panto which they shouldn't really be it.
- 57:38It is difficult to write a script.
- 57:41It's a bit like that's why I I always get to defend Roberts
- 57:45because people will go Pennant. Roberts is a bad director.
- 57:47He wasn't a bad director. Most of the stories that he
- 57:50worked on there was something going on.
- 57:53And it's a bit similar with this.
- 57:54If you get told all your 2D characters not going to be in
- 57:57it, it's hard to then write a story.
- 58:00You have to write an ensemble piece, which we've, you know,
- 58:02talked about is brilliant. So I think had he been allowed
- 58:07to write them more into it, he he would have put them more into
- 58:11it, I'm sure. I mean, I'm sure he would have
- 58:13count them a little bit out the door, but.
- 58:16And what the the scenes that he does write for them.
- 58:20I think he's learned to write for both of them really well.
- 58:23So a bit where they go over the wall and he's like, I'll be
- 58:26lucky if I can lift you the amount you wait, oh watch it
- 58:28Parky. You know like it's it's funny
- 58:31stuff. But they've also learned to
- 58:34soften their performances as well, so.
- 58:36It's like the writing and the performance is all kind of
- 58:39sinking. Definitely, definitely.
- 58:43And I mean, it's a shame it's taken this long this season with
- 58:48that to happen. But I mean, it's yeah, it's
- 58:51still one of my favorites. Well, look, David,
- 58:54unfortunately, you may think that you can go now, but you
- 58:56have the unenviable task of having to choose three reasons
- 59:02to recommend Revelation of the Daleks.
- 59:04I shall do the same if you start, and then I'll have one.
- 59:08And then you. And then me.
- 59:09And then you and then me. Off you go.
- 59:13Oh, OK well, I would say firstly 2 words.
- 59:16Graham Arthur, possibly the most the best bit of Doctor to
- 59:23direction in Revelations are like #1.
- 59:27Grant is Grandma. My number one is going to be
- 59:33Hassan Beka. Come on now.
- 59:38Come on now. Because because our feels if
- 59:40she's getting a lot of hate from everybody and yet I think in the
- 59:46style in the role that she's given.
- 59:52I think she's pretty good in the role that she's given.
- 59:56I don't think she's given a good performance, but I think she's
- 1:00:00in a role where you don't need to.
- 1:00:02You just need to be awkward and pathetic and she does it really
- 1:00:06well. And I feel, I genuinely feel
- 1:00:09sorry for her when he's mean to her and especially at the end
- 1:00:13when he's really mean to her to to the point where she kills him
- 1:00:17so. And then she gets killed herself
- 1:00:20for doing. It it's a tragedy up there with
- 1:00:24the best Shakespeareans tragedies.
- 1:00:26So Aston Baker's my first one. Back to you one of, and I would
- 1:00:36only put it with a couple of other stories.
- 1:00:38Best guest cast in There are not many, but it's one of the best
- 1:00:45guest casts in the. Industry.
- 1:00:47I'll have to single anyone out because they're all so good, but
- 1:00:52I mean if I if I had someone held a gun to me and they said
- 1:00:55pick the best person in this, I think it would have to be quite
- 1:00:59swift. I would be hard to disagree with
- 1:01:04that, but I would also say but no, I think it's one of the best
- 1:01:07guest casts in a. You'd say Clive Swift and then
- 1:01:12you'd start thinking, oh, Eleanor Braun, oh, Terry Malloy,
- 1:01:16Alexis, William Gorn, Alexis. Yeah, you'd be going.
- 1:01:19Colin Baker's brilliant in it, you know, like you're like,
- 1:01:22Jesus, okay. I'm going to say then for my
- 1:01:27second one that I really like in the second episode how I think.
- 1:01:34Colin Baker's Dr. and Nicola Bryant's Perry switch roles.
- 1:01:39So basically he's the one that is unconscious and falling all
- 1:01:44over the place and being beaten up and treated in a generally
- 1:01:47appalling way. And she's the one that is
- 1:01:50fighting the Daleks and making the relationships and playing
- 1:01:55nice with everybody. And I just think, I think
- 1:01:58Perry's written for really well in this story, and she's got a
- 1:02:00lot of agency and Nicola Bryant is.
- 1:02:03Really, really good. And where she is seeing what she
- 1:02:07can do. So yeah, the The Run Reversal.
- 1:02:10And Nicola Bryan. I love that.
- 1:02:14Love that. I should have been my number
- 1:02:15three. Really.
- 1:02:16But I'm gonna. I'm gonna say my #3 probably
- 1:02:22This is the darkest Doctor Who story that there's ever been in
- 1:02:27the classic era, but by God, it's one of the camp.
- 1:02:32It's very camp. It's so camp.
- 1:02:35And it's it's that wonderful thing of having a really dark
- 1:02:40storyline but having lots of making, lots of having fun with
- 1:02:43it. It's not having, you know what I
- 1:02:45mean? Like, it's it's a lot of very
- 1:02:47dark ideas, a lot of very dark stories, a lot of very dark
- 1:02:51themes in a bit of a way. Which you know, if you if you
- 1:02:57boil down the actual story revelation, the darks, it is
- 1:03:01dark. But having all those other juicy
- 1:03:04performances just makes it, you know.
- 1:03:08Did you watch the behind the sofa for Paradise Towers?
- 1:03:11Of course. Where Janet and Peter said at
- 1:03:15the end, this is a bunch of really amazing character actors
- 1:03:20having the best time in the world and being camp and
- 1:03:24outrageous and. It's the same here, isn't it?
- 1:03:28I mean, I think this is a better story.
- 1:03:30I think the direction is better and I think tonally it's better
- 1:03:34judged. But yeah, Jesus Christ is
- 1:03:37infectious. Oh yes, Oh yes.
- 1:03:41They're all having a well of time doing it all, having a well
- 1:03:44of and there you got #3. I don't worry about Somerset
- 1:03:48then. Bugger.
- 1:03:50OK, so #3. Is going to.
- 1:03:52Oh yeah, because I never get to say this because I think
- 1:03:55generally his music is poor. It's Roger Lim who after, you
- 1:04:01know, he scored stories like Terminus and Ark of Infinity.
- 1:04:06Yeah, just terrible, terrible, dreary wallpaper music, you
- 1:04:11know, like electronic hell. And then Oppa came along and had
- 1:04:16long protracted discussions with him and said I want it more
- 1:04:20instrumental. Less electronic.
- 1:04:22I want it scarier. This is where I want the music
- 1:04:26and fuck me. Lim delivers the goods.
- 1:04:28It's got a great score. All of those things we talked
- 1:04:31about, where the pace is rising up.
- 1:04:33The music does a lot of the work there.
- 1:04:35So yeah, Roger Lim, you finally came good.
- 1:04:38Unfortunately this is the last time you're in the show and
- 1:04:42Roger, if you're listening or anyone from the BBC, please
- 1:04:45release this on final because I would actually buy it.
- 1:04:48Yeah, I think at least it's musical final, because it's
- 1:04:51lovely. Yeah.
- 1:04:52David, before we out, was there anyone in the cast where we
- 1:04:55didn't hear the anecdote? Let me think.
- 1:04:59And the Bron. Yes.
- 1:05:03Yeah, I met Bill Gorm but I can't remember much about it cuz
- 1:05:07I was about 12:00. OK, your parent's friend.
- 1:05:12My parents. Lovely friend.
- 1:05:13Yeah. Rose Mills.
- 1:05:15Who's the Knight? You're into them all, not, but
- 1:05:20there are many nice stories about this car particularly.
- 1:05:24I'll tell you what I've got. I've got one story of somebody
- 1:05:26in this who I think is just the most delightful person in all of
- 1:05:31Doctor Who, and that's Graham Harper who.
- 1:05:35Is just dazzling at conventions. He's and he's so warm and
- 1:05:39friendly and for a man that talented, he's done such good
- 1:05:43work. You really don't need to be.
- 1:05:45But he, he just is a nice but I remember a story that Barry
- 1:05:48let's told that Graham Harper came up to him as he was doing
- 1:05:51the director's course. And he's like, I really wanted
- 1:05:54to go and do the director's course.
- 1:05:55But I don't want to be an answer, I don't want to be a
- 1:05:58bastard. And so many directors are just
- 1:06:00horrible. And Barry, let's sit with him.
- 1:06:02Graham, you can be a fantastic director and you can be a nice
- 1:06:05guy. And having met him in person
- 1:06:08just briefly where I got to say, I think you're brilliant.
- 1:06:12I said, and I think the work you did with Russie, Davis's Doctor
- 1:06:15Who was just astonishing and he went, well, Russell does have my
- 1:06:20number, You know, if he is coming back, he is a really nice
- 1:06:25bloke like he is. None of the good work he did
- 1:06:28like changed his personality at all.
- 1:06:30He's just the top guy. He he's someone that you can
- 1:06:34listen to for hours because he's always so enthusiastic about
- 1:06:37what he talks about. He's it's so infectious when he
- 1:06:40talks at conventions about stuff and you can listen to him frows
- 1:06:44and he's always so interested in you talking to you.
- 1:06:48And in fact couples ago was at the Capitol the doctor that run
- 1:06:54and they hand out awards or lifetime treatment for Doctor
- 1:06:59Who. They were three given weekend.
- 1:07:02Graham Harper got one of them and thoroughly deserved.
- 1:07:05And it was so lovely to see him quite tearful about it because
- 1:07:10yeah, he thoroughly deserves it because he is.
- 1:07:12He's a great. He's a great guy, lovely, lovely
- 1:07:14man. Well then I have one final
- 1:07:18question for you before we say goodbye, and that is, do you
- 1:07:23like Matt Smith as the Doctor? Yeah, I do.
- 1:07:28I do. Okay, What's your favorite Matt
- 1:07:31Smith episode? You know the answer to this
- 1:07:38symbiotic, you might say. Oh no, bug RIP.
- 1:07:42Someone's nabbed that one. What's your second favorite Matt
- 1:07:45Smith episode that Day of the Doctor?
- 1:07:50I guess I'm not saying that one. So I've got so many Matt Smith
- 1:07:53episodes I need to do recordings for.
- 1:07:54You've taken, like you've mentioned, one of about 5:00
- 1:07:57that have been done. Which ones do you need to get?
- 1:08:01Which ones? Literally, there is literally
- 1:08:03Tums. OK, the beast below.
- 1:08:09What about that one? No.
- 1:08:10That's still that's still available.
- 1:08:12And what do you know? My favorite mattress story is
- 1:08:17the beast below. Is it?
- 1:08:18Now. Well, let me tell you, it just
- 1:08:20so happens to be available, and next time we reconvene them, I'm
- 1:08:27gonna be intrigued to know why you like that one so much,
- 1:08:29because I'm a bit iffy with that one.
- 1:08:30Are you? Are you?
- 1:08:33I can't think of many other good Max Smith episodes, if I'm
- 1:08:35honest. It's about a weirdly and out of
- 1:08:38space. Sorry, that was terrible.
- 1:08:42Well, look, you and I, if you're up for it, we'll reconvene for
- 1:08:45the Beast below. Oh, absolutely.
- 1:08:48Absolutely all any the other Max with stories that happen to be
- 1:08:52my face. As long as you say I'm the
- 1:08:55bloody Queen mate and basically don't tell me what's tell me
- 1:09:01which stories you want to do or haven't done the net, they'll be
- 1:09:04my favorite. It's fine.
- 1:09:05Oh, OK. I'll send you a list then.
- 1:09:07All right. As long as it's not.
- 1:09:09As long as it's not time with the Doctor.
- 1:09:10I'm not sitting through that again.
- 1:09:12Let's go. Do that with Fraser.
- 1:09:13Somehow he managed to go on for two hours about how amazing it
- 1:09:16was. I was very patient with him.
- 1:09:20What? Which one?
- 1:09:21Which one? I'm with the Doctor.
- 1:09:24Oh no. It's a blind name, isn't it?
- 1:09:29Yeah, Let's go hit that as well. Yeah, I did that one recently as
- 1:09:33well. The pain I put myself through
- 1:09:35for this podcast. I don't know how you do it.
- 1:09:39I tell you what Ask me. Ask me my favorite Stephen
- 1:09:42Moffett story. What's your favorite Stephen
- 1:09:44Moffett story? Curse of Fate or Death?
- 1:09:47Ah, it's yours. But no, that does just leave me
- 1:09:54to say thank you very much for your time.
- 1:09:56Thank you very much for your anecdotes.
- 1:09:57I love to hear. Thank you.
- 1:09:59And you always bring such energy and humor to these things.
- 1:10:02It's just a lie. So thank you very much.
- 1:10:05Well, thank well, thank you. It's been an absolute pleasure.
- 1:10:08And yeah, we love a bit of revelation, Alex, don't we?
- 1:10:14You can't be. But no, it's been, it's been a
- 1:10:16joint and I hope people listen to this.
- 1:10:18Just love our impressions that are incredibly accurate and
- 1:10:25wonderful. They've gotta be fucking
- 1:10:26indulging with us to love 'em 'cause there's plenty of them.
