- 2:54Sunny mornings send you. In local news, State
- 3:00Senator John Keenan, who voted to legalize sports
- 3:03betting in Massachusetts in 2022, now regrets
- 3:07his decision. He has witnessed the negative impact
- 3:11of gambling addiction on his constituents and
- 3:13has publicly apologized for his support. Keenan
- 3:17has proposed one of the strictest reform bills
- 3:20in the country aimed at restricting advertising,
- 3:22more than doubling the tax rate on sportsbook
- 3:25revenues, and banning prop bets. Meanwhile, DraftKings,
- 3:30which is based in Boston, has recently contributed
- 3:32nearly $43 million to a super PAC targeting statehouse
- 3:37races in response to these proposed regulations.
- 3:41Keaton believes that as public health concerns
- 3:44about sports betting grow, pressure will mount
- 3:46on legislators to take action. Now on to sports.
- 3:56The National Basketball Association's proposed
- 3:593 -2 -1 draft lottery system, designed to curb
- 4:02tanking, was passed by the league's Board of
- 4:05Governors on Thursday. According to ESPN's Shams
- 4:10Charania, the board voted in favor of the proposal
- 4:1329 -1, with the Memphis Grizzlies being the lone
- 4:17dissenter. The new system includes expanding
- 4:20the draft lottery from 14 to 16 teams. a relegation
- 4:24zone where the bottom three teams face penalties
- 4:27and flattened odds. This system will be implemented
- 4:30next season for the 2027 NBA draft, continuing
- 4:35through at least the 2029 NBA draft. NBA Commissioner
- 4:40Adam Silver now has greater authority to punish
- 4:43teams deemed to be tanking. Potential punishments
- 4:47include fines up to $10 million, forfeiture of
- 4:51draft picks, and changes to draft positions and
- 4:54odds. The current lottery system features 14
- 4:57teams that did not make the playoffs, with three
- 5:00worst records holding a 14 % chance to land the
- 5:04number one overall pick. Under the new system,
- 5:08those teams will only receive two lottery balls
- 5:11for the top pick, while teams finishing with
- 5:13the fourth through 10th worst records will receive
- 5:16three. Additionally, no team can acquire the
- 5:20number one pick in back -to -back years or select
- 5:22in the top five for three consecutive years.
- 5:26Silver emphasized the importance of addressing
- 5:29tanking, stating that it has significant business,
- 5:32basketball, and integrity implications for the
- 5:35league. This season, eight teams won 26 or fewer
- 5:39games, with five teams suffering at least 60
- 5:42losses. The Washington Wizards, who had the worst
- 5:46record at 17 wins and 65 losses, won the lottery,
- 5:51gaining the chance to select BYU forward A .J.
- 5:54D 'Aganza or Kansas guard Darren Peterson number
- 5:57one overall. Under the new lottery rules, the
- 6:01Wizards would have had a worse chance at the
- 6:03number one pick than teams with the fourth, through
- 6:0610th worst records. In local sports, the Red
- 6:10Sox are stuck in a rut. They got rolled yesterday
- 6:14by Atlanta, 10 -2, dropping the series at Fenway.
- 6:19Peyton Tull couldn't get out of the fifth, and
- 6:22the lineup managed just two runs despite bright
- 6:25spots from Kiner Falefa and Durbin. Boston is
- 6:30now 23 -32, just one win in their last five.
- 6:35Tonight they head to Cleveland to face the Guardians
- 6:38with Tyler Salmonigo. on the mound against Slade
- 6:42-Saccone. First pitch is 7 -10. This is a must
- 6:47-win stretch for a team that's been treading
- 6:49water all month. The Sox need a quality start
- 6:53and bats working to build some momentum heading
- 6:56into the weekend. Meanwhile, the Patriots are
- 6:59locked in trade talks with Philadelphia for receiver
- 7:02A .G. Brown, but they're not particularly close.
- 7:06The Eagles want a 20 -27 first -rounder. New
- 7:11England is hesitant to give up that capital in
- 7:13a deep draft class. The June 1st deadline could
- 7:17heat things up once Brown contract becomes more
- 7:20tradable. Drake May says he's focused on his
- 7:24current roster, but if Brown lands here, great.
- 7:27On the brighter side, top prospect Franklin Arias
- 7:31is putting on a show in Portland. The 20 -year
- 7:35-old shortstop is hitting .343 with 12 homers
- 7:39in 38 games. and just struck out 19 times all
- 7:42season. Kiefla ranked him the third -best prospect
- 7:46in baseball. If Arias keeps this pace, Boston
- 7:50could fast -track him sooner rather than later.
