- 2:08Speaker 2: I'm sure everybody knows. He is the face of the
- 2:11Speaker 2: NFL in the UK and Ireland, the host of Sky
- 2:14Speaker 2: Sports NFL. Let's hear from Neil Reynolds this week on
- 2:17Speaker 2: the Irish Cedars podcast, presented by Aer Lingus. Okay, we've
- 2:24Speaker 2: got Neil Reynolds this week as we get set for
- 2:25Speaker 2: the Cedars regular season start next week. And Neil, You're very,
- 2:29Speaker 2: very welcome, my man. I know each year you like
- 2:31Speaker 2: to have a mini vacation before the season starts. And
- 2:33Speaker 2: this is the last thing that you're doing before you
- 2:36Speaker 2: get that mini vacation. I'm presuming that you're not flying
- 2:38Speaker 2: to Pittsburgh, though.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I am not. I'm flying to northern Spain for four
- 2:42Speaker 3: nights with the family. So literally straight from here, straight
- 2:47Speaker 3: to City Airport. So you I've had a long to
- 2:50Speaker 3: do list today. I didn't mean to keep pushing you
- 2:54Speaker 3: to the bottom of it. I feel like it's best,
- 2:58Speaker 3: save the best till last. So literally, talk to you,
- 3:03Speaker 3: click leave meeting, run out the door. That is going
- 3:06Speaker 3: to be me. So yeah, but it's just a little break,
- 3:09Speaker 3: but I think, you know, I'm ready for the season now.
- 3:13Speaker 3: We've spoken before. We're both really excited and quite rightly so.
- 3:18Speaker 3: We love it at this time of year. So ready
- 3:20Speaker 3: to go.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Ready to go. And I'm sure fans that are listening
- 3:23Speaker 2: in will know There's going to be a lot of
- 3:25Speaker 2: Steelers games on Sky Sports this season. You can check
- 3:27Speaker 2: out the socials for that there. Look, Neil, obviously you
- 3:31Speaker 2: didn't get a chance to go to La Trobe this year,
- 3:33Speaker 2: but you were there last year and you were in Dublin.
- 3:36Speaker 2: When you hear, and we'll maybe talk about Coach Tomlin
- 3:40Speaker 2: in a second, but when you hear about Coach McCarthy
- 3:42Speaker 2: coming in and his opportunity now to work again with
- 3:45Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers in that legendary setting, what was the first
- 3:49Speaker 2: thing that came to your mind whenever you heard that
- 3:50Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy was going to be the head coach of
- 3:52Speaker 2: the Pittsburgh Steelers?
- 3:53Speaker 3: Um, proven winner. I think the fact that he's done
- 3:58Speaker 3: it with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay and they paired
- 4:00Speaker 3: to win a Super Bowl. I think he did very
- 4:04Speaker 3: well in Dallas considering they didn't have a complete roster.
- 4:07Speaker 3: There are certain coaches that you know are tried and tested.
- 4:10Speaker 3: There are of course young coaches being rolled out across
- 4:14Speaker 3: the NFL as well. I think you can have both
- 4:18Speaker 3: types and I think what the Steelers have is a
- 4:21Speaker 3: proven winner. somebody who knows how to create good offensive football.
- 4:26Speaker 3: He's going to lead his team. So I think it's
- 4:29Speaker 3: all positive. I think you see a lot of stuff like, oh, well,
- 4:34Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers combined to win a Super
- 4:36Speaker 3: Bowl 15 years ago. They still know what it takes.
- 4:42Speaker 3: X's and O's change from year to year, but approaches
- 4:45Speaker 3: to seasons can be kind of set in stone. Those
- 4:49Speaker 3: can be kind of, your kind of standards and your goals.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And I think both these men, although longer in the
- 4:57Speaker 3: tooth than other head coach quarterback combinations around the NFL,
- 5:02Speaker 3: are going to prove to be successful.
- 5:05Speaker 2: You have known him and you've been able to have
- 5:08Speaker 2: conversations on a first name basis with Aaron Rodgers a
- 5:11Speaker 2: number of times throughout the years. How cool do you think,
- 5:14Speaker 2: if you take your glasses off and maybe watch this
- 5:16Speaker 2: from a fan's perspective, how cool is it to see
- 5:18Speaker 2: him go one more year with the Cedars?
- 5:20Speaker 3: I was really excited to see him come back. I
- 5:22Speaker 3: thought he played well last year and I think he's
- 5:24Speaker 3: still got things to offer. Um, I think we will
- 5:29Speaker 3: miss the legends of the game when they're gone. Like
- 5:32Speaker 3: we missed Tom Brady, Drew Brees. I was really pleased.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I think to see him come back with, uh, increased weapons, uh,
- 5:39Speaker 3: for that attack that I, I, I really like Aaron.
- 5:43Speaker 3: I get on well with him. I, um, I'm a journalist.
- 5:48Speaker 3: He's a player. We're not friends. But he introduced me
- 5:51Speaker 3: to one of the players of the Steelers in Dublin
- 5:53Speaker 3: last year. He was like, it's my friend Neil. So
- 5:55Speaker 3: I'll take it. I'll take it. But look, I think
- 6:01Speaker 3: he's very well respected in locker rooms. I think he's
- 6:06Speaker 3: popular in NFL locker rooms. I think the people that
- 6:10Speaker 3: talk about Aaron Rodgers aren't in those locker rooms. So
- 6:14Speaker 3: they're looking from the outside. I can't profess to know
- 6:18Speaker 3: him greatly, but I like the person that I meet
- 6:22Speaker 3: every time I see him. And so, from a personal
- 6:25Speaker 3: point of view, from a player point of view, I'm
- 6:27Speaker 3: glad he's back.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Were you surprised when you heard that the Steelers were
- 6:31Speaker 2: going to travel to Europe again? Obviously, no doubling game
- 6:34Speaker 2: this year, but to go to Paris is pretty cool.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I know, and I'm probably going to announce this for
- 6:39Speaker 2: you here and feel free to expand on it, but
- 6:41Speaker 2: you're going to be in Paris with Sky Sports for
- 6:43Speaker 2: that historic game. And to see a team that had
- 6:46Speaker 2: only played in London in 2013, and now suddenly two
- 6:48Speaker 2: years in a row, they go to the Irish capital
- 6:50Speaker 2: and later go to the French capital. For a fan,
- 6:53Speaker 2: for an analyst, for a presenter, that is going to
- 6:56Speaker 2: be a very, very cool moment, that game in Paris
- 6:57Speaker 2: in October.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It is going to be very special because, first of all,
- 7:01Speaker 3: Steelers games are just instantly iconic for me. I think
- 7:05Speaker 3: I've been fortunate to go to a couple in Pittsburgh.
- 7:08Speaker 3: I've been to I've seen from afar I didn't get
- 7:12Speaker 3: to go to Dublin but I was out there for
- 7:14Speaker 3: the week leading up to it I know how well
- 7:16Speaker 3: their fans travel I know how colourful the games look
- 7:20Speaker 3: and you've only got to delve into the history a
- 7:23Speaker 3: little bit to know this is one of the special
- 7:24Speaker 3: franchises in the NFL it's a team that moves the
- 7:27Speaker 3: needle no matter what season who's playing under centre who's
- 7:32Speaker 3: the head coach this is one of the NFL's iconic
- 7:35Speaker 3: franchises so to pair that a historic team with a
- 7:40Speaker 3: historic moment. I is really cool. The other thing I
- 7:43Speaker 3: would say is I think, you know, starting with the late,
- 7:46Speaker 3: great Mr. Dan Rooney, there was always an eye on
- 7:49Speaker 3: international with the, with the dealers. You know, I spoke
- 7:53Speaker 3: to him, a fan rally in, in Regent street many
- 7:57Speaker 3: years ago now, and he would came up on stage
- 7:59Speaker 3: with the commissioner fan rally in Trafalgar square. The Steelers
- 8:03Speaker 3: weren't even playing in that one. And he was there. So, yeah,
- 8:08Speaker 3: I think one of the, one of the custodians of
- 8:12Speaker 3: the league, one of the guardians of the league, the
- 8:14Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Steelers, for them to have this kind of openness
- 8:17Speaker 3: to international games, Dublin, now Paris, I think it really
- 8:23Speaker 3: bodes well because there are certain teams, like I say,
- 8:26Speaker 3: that kind of can guide and influence. I do think
- 8:30Speaker 3: the Steelers are one of those. I think they're one
- 8:32Speaker 3: of those strong teams. If they support the NFL internationally,
- 8:36Speaker 3: And I'm not saying other teams won't, but I think
- 8:38Speaker 3: it just makes it easier for everyone to kind of
- 8:40Speaker 3: get on board with what we're doing internationally.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I can't wait to share a baguette with you, my friend,
- 8:45Speaker 2: in Paris later on in October. C'est bon. C'est bon, oui, oui.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Or apparently it's way, way, but we will have to
- 8:52Speaker 2: try and get on that before the watch parties on
- 8:55Speaker 2: the 18th of October. I'll talk about that at the
- 8:57Speaker 2: end of the podcast. Neil, obviously probably one of the
- 9:00Speaker 2: biggest things generally around the league this week is the
- 9:03Speaker 2: final 53 on the rosters being announced. probably the biggest
- 9:06Speaker 2: standing point is I'm not sure if you've seen this
- 9:08Speaker 2: but the Steelers have kept four quarterbacks in the roster
- 9:10Speaker 2: Drew Allard, Will Howard, Mason Rudolph as well the first
- 9:14Speaker 2: thing that I thought was not why is it four
- 9:16Speaker 2: quarterbacks the first thing I thought was what an opportunity
- 9:18Speaker 2: especially for Will Howard and especially Drew Allard just out
- 9:22Speaker 2: of college football to learn from Aaron Rodgers and what
- 9:24Speaker 2: is most likely his final season like that's incredible.
- 9:27Speaker 3: And I think that's what it is it's a passing
- 9:29Speaker 3: of the baton if you will um And Rodgers isn't necessarily,
- 9:33Speaker 3: from my understanding of how he kind of leads, isn't
- 9:36Speaker 3: necessarily going to sit there and say, look at this,
- 9:38Speaker 3: look at that. But you can learn so much from
- 9:41Speaker 3: watching him, you know, how he studies, how he carries
- 9:45Speaker 3: himself on the field, the kind of coolness that he
- 9:48Speaker 3: plays with. I think this is a good opportunity for
- 9:51Speaker 3: these young quarterbacks. I don't think it's a negative reflection on, oh,
- 9:56Speaker 3: we're worried Aaron's going to get hurt. I don't think
- 9:58Speaker 3: it's that. I think it's... it's these are like young
- 10:01Speaker 3: guys we like we're going to eventually move into a
- 10:04Speaker 3: period of transition yeah our starting quarterback himself has said
- 10:08Speaker 3: it's a farewell tour this is the last go around
- 10:11Speaker 3: the Steelers would be remiss to not prepare for 2027
- 10:15Speaker 3: and beyond so you know if you can carry them
- 10:19Speaker 3: If you can develop them, you can't have enough good quarterbacks.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Obviously, the Sky Sports schedule is TBC, and we're not
- 10:26Speaker 2: asking you to leak the 18 weeks and tell us
- 10:28Speaker 2: the Steelers are on a good week, Neil. But what
- 10:30Speaker 2: I will say to people listening is that Thursday night
- 10:33Speaker 2: football game against the Browns on the 1st of October,
- 10:36Speaker 2: 2nd of October, will be on Sky Sports. And a
- 10:38Speaker 2: Paris game will be as well. So at least two
- 10:40Speaker 2: out of the first seven weeks, the Steelers are going
- 10:42Speaker 2: to be on Sky Sports minimum. How proud are you
- 10:45Speaker 2: of how much Sky Sports has grown since you've sat
- 10:48Speaker 2: in that seat to now? Because the opportunity for Steelers
- 10:52Speaker 2: fans to watch games, whether it's at 6 o'clock or
- 10:54Speaker 2: 9 o'clock, is growing every year and it gets more
- 10:57Speaker 2: fans aboard as well over here in Ireland.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we've pushed the envelope every year. There's
- 11:03Speaker 3: going to be more games in the US this season.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I'm going to go to four of the six international
- 11:08Speaker 3: games on this side of the pond. But it's not
- 11:11Speaker 3: just that. It's, you know, in 6 p.m. window, you
- 11:14Speaker 3: can watch our main game or you can watch a
- 11:17Speaker 3: couple of others in their entirety. You can watch Red
- 11:20Speaker 3: Zone 925. You can watch the game we're bringing you
- 11:23Speaker 3: from the studio or two others. You know, you can
- 11:26Speaker 3: have a multi screen approach now through Sky Sports to
- 11:29Speaker 3: watch your games. You know, this is this is game
- 11:32Speaker 3: changing from what we used to have. It's light years away.
- 11:36Speaker 3: from where we were when I first started there at
- 11:39Speaker 3: Sky Sports, where we'd show one game, we'd have no
- 11:41Speaker 3: highlights to show you, maybe a couple of touchdowns at halftime.
- 11:45Speaker 3: And now we can offer you up multiple games in
- 11:48Speaker 3: the same window. You can watch ours or you can
- 11:51Speaker 3: watch both or you can have three games on at
- 11:52Speaker 3: the same time. This is really incredible to see that happen.
- 11:57Speaker 3: And we've pushed our kind of ambition to bring more
- 12:04Speaker 3: people into the NFL family and Donald King Sue's back
- 12:07Speaker 3: for a fourth year. That's a guy who's one of
- 12:10Speaker 3: the very best defenders in NFL history. And we, you know,
- 12:13Speaker 3: when he talks about what he wants to do every year,
- 12:16Speaker 3: sky's one of the first things he wants to do.
- 12:18Speaker 3: So we're very proud that, you know, we were able
- 12:20Speaker 3: to entice somebody like that to come over.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 3: So we'll just keep pushing, keep growing. And yeah, we love,
- 12:28Speaker 3: we love the fact that people now, even though they're
- 12:30Speaker 3: not just watching our studio, we're providing that opportunity to
- 12:34Speaker 3: go and watch different games.
- 12:36Speaker 2: The Steelers have a lot of primetime games folks and
- 12:39Speaker 2: anything bar Netflix is on Sky Sports so I'm sure
- 12:43Speaker 2: minimum you'll see a lot of them this season. A
- 12:45Speaker 2: lot happening over here. I know Neil you're aware of
- 12:48Speaker 2: the NFL itself putting the flag kit into every school
- 12:51Speaker 2: but the Steelers recently had their island wide flag football
- 12:55Speaker 2: competition around different schools. How cool is it to see
- 12:58Speaker 2: teams like the Steelers go into a market in Ireland
- 13:01Speaker 2: for example and and bring that game and help grow
- 13:04Speaker 2: that game. Because I know your son didn't just play
- 13:07Speaker 2: it like yourself, but he's also a coach as well.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's vital. It's the next step. We have a
- 13:15Speaker 3: wonderful fan base, 100% in the UK and Ireland, and
- 13:20Speaker 3: the island of Ireland. And it is people of all ages,
- 13:24Speaker 3: but we're kind of having this injection of young fans because...
- 13:28Speaker 3: The teams like the Steelers are getting footballs in the
- 13:31Speaker 3: hands of boys and girls. You know, the flag kits
- 13:34Speaker 3: are going out to the schools through NFL. And so
- 13:37Speaker 3: I think when you play something, kind of play it
- 13:40Speaker 3: in the playground or after school, you know, mum and
- 13:43Speaker 3: dad might switch it on for you on a Sunday night.
- 13:45Speaker 3: And then there you are. You're away. Your journey begins.
- 13:48Speaker 3: So I love the fact that the teams don't just say, oh, yeah,
- 13:53Speaker 3: we're going to we're going to market on the island
- 13:55Speaker 3: of Ireland. And then you don't really follow it up.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I think just saying, well, we want you to show
- 14:01Speaker 3: games on Sky. I don't think the Steelers do that.
- 14:03Speaker 3: And I think the teams that look to come over
- 14:06Speaker 3: and do things, they are really making an impact. So
- 14:09Speaker 3: I just think all these things, whatever it is, watch parties,
- 14:15Speaker 3: flag football, touch points, because we're 4,000 miles away from
- 14:19Speaker 3: the games for the most part. Bring the Pittsburgh Steelers
- 14:25Speaker 3: to us. you know, and then the fandom will go
- 14:28Speaker 3: back in that direction. And that's what I think teams
- 14:31Speaker 3: are recognising and they're doing.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I have two quick ones to finish off before you
- 14:34Speaker 2: get to go in your hall, isn't it? First one,
- 14:36Speaker 2: you've interviewed a long list of people, legends, etc. If
- 14:40Speaker 2: there was one Steelers figure, past or present, that you
- 14:44Speaker 2: could sit down with and talk to, who would it
- 14:46Speaker 2: be and why? I've put you on the spot there.
- 14:50Speaker 3: That is an easy one. And people in Pittsburgh will
- 14:52Speaker 3: know him. And actually, if you'd have said who's the
- 14:55Speaker 3: most interesting interview you've ever done, period, forgot about the
- 14:57Speaker 3: team or anything, it would have been a Pittsburgh Steeler.
- 15:01Speaker 3: So the great running back from the team of the 70s,
- 15:04Speaker 3: not Franco Harris, God rest his soul, Rocky Blyer. Rocky Blyer,
- 15:09Speaker 3: what a story. So I wrote a book on the
- 15:12Speaker 3: 50 toughest players in pro football history. I spoke to Rocky,
- 15:15Speaker 3: who was an incredible figure. This Rocky was basically on
- 15:19Speaker 3: the Steelers. goes to Vietnam, fights in that war, has
- 15:23Speaker 3: kind of half of his foot blown off, loses toes,
- 15:27Speaker 3: comes back, can barely run 100 metres without being out
- 15:31Speaker 3: of breath, wanting to throw up. And he goes on
- 15:34Speaker 3: to become a multiple Super Bowl champion. And he tells
- 15:38Speaker 3: me the stories. He's literally powering in fields, hiding while
- 15:43Speaker 3: all these bombs are going off. And, you know, these
- 15:46Speaker 3: are things when you, we see these things happen miles
- 15:49Speaker 3: from home. But when you listen to somebody describe what
- 15:52Speaker 3: they're going through, this man stared down death, stared down
- 15:57Speaker 3: significant injury, and came back to be a Super Bowl champion.
- 16:02Speaker 3: So everyone who's listening in Pittsburgh will definitely know who
- 16:05Speaker 3: he is. I hope a lot of the Steelers fans
- 16:07Speaker 3: know who he is. If you don't, do yourself a
- 16:09Speaker 3: favor and learn about the life and times of Rocky Blyer.
- 16:14Speaker 2: What an answer. I'm going to put you on the
- 16:16Speaker 2: spot finally, just to say, We've both talked about it
- 16:18Speaker 2: over our coffee this week. We know how crazy this
- 16:22Speaker 2: division is in the AFC North. How do you expect
- 16:24Speaker 2: the Steelers just finally to do this season, Neil, if
- 16:26Speaker 2: you had to put a dart on the board and
- 16:28Speaker 2: say it's going to be this or it's going to
- 16:30Speaker 2: be that?
- 16:31Speaker 3: I think the team won 10 games last year and
- 16:34Speaker 3: into the playoffs. And I think that's the kind of
- 16:37Speaker 3: standard I would expect from the Steelers. It's a hugely
- 16:41Speaker 3: competitive conference. So I would say about 10 wins again
- 16:48Speaker 3: And a playoff spot is definitely within their grasp. I
- 16:51Speaker 3: like Baltimore in the AFC North a lot this year
- 16:54Speaker 3: to bounce back. But I do think Pittsburgh have a
- 16:57Speaker 3: standard and they know how to win games. And it
- 17:00Speaker 3: doesn't matter to me that it's the oldest roster in
- 17:03Speaker 3: the NFL. The still average age is 27, right? It's
- 17:06Speaker 3: not like they're all unable to run and make plays.
- 17:11Speaker 3: So I like what's them. I like what they've added.
- 17:15Speaker 3: and I think they are going to be in the
- 17:17Speaker 3: playoff mix, and all you've got to do is get
