Transcript
- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? Haley, if I have any more fun,
- 0:16well, I just don't know what I'll do.
- 0:19Welcome to What's your least? Yeah.
- 0:22I guess we'll be talking about the good, the bad, the ugly, and
- 0:25the absurd in all of our. Family's.
- 0:27Favorite scary movies? Because we believe every horror
- 0:29movie rightfully has his fan base.
- 0:31Even if we don't always get it. My name is Travis, my name is
- 0:34Jesse, and it's time, y'all, It's time.
- 0:37This is family, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
- 0:41We're officially starting a new franchise and we're starting off
- 0:44with the first one. And I'm going to emphasize this,
- 0:46and it's going to sound silly, but you're going to see over the
- 0:49next year that it's important. This one is the Texas Chain Saw
- 0:56Massacre. The V and the Chain space saw
- 1:01are important title distinctions.
- 1:03I don't understand how or when that happened because I looked
- 1:07things up yesterday. Even on the original script it's
- 1:10all one word. So who fucked that up?
- 1:13I. Somebody did and somebody had to
- 1:15run with it and it's it's listed like that for the rest of time
- 1:18now. I I have, I have no clue.
- 1:21I don't know. I don't know, but I'm excited to
- 1:23talk about it before we do. Brief announcement.
- 1:26Patreon episode should be out by now, and if you want to be a
- 1:29patron, it's not too late. You can follow find the link at
- 1:33the very bottom of our show notes right here and go
- 1:35subscribe. If you become a budget tier
- 1:37member, then you can enjoy all of our bonus episodes and
- 1:40participate in voting each month along with them.
- 1:43Seeing our scribbly show notes and getting stickers from Travis
- 1:47for every Texas Chainsaw movie as we go along.
- 1:50Yeah, every franchise. So starting with the cover for
- 1:52this one, you will have a sticker for that.
- 1:54Also voting is for an episode each month.
- 1:57Yep, just to be clear. So you get a pick you gotta say
- 1:59in one of the episodes? Yep, So.
- 2:02So, So those are the things I'm gonna go ahead and shout out.
- 2:06The Patreons real quick, the patrons, the bubbies, if you
- 2:09will. We've got Joe Freakatron, as is
- 2:12his name, Amber, Michael, Lord, Zombie, Tyler, Chad and Johnny.
- 2:17Yeah. Thank you guys.
- 2:18Thank you guys so much. And as our special thank you for
- 2:22being the sponsors of the show. We have your bonus episode out.
- 2:26And what we decided to do was as we're welcoming a new franchise,
- 2:32a new, a new Class, A new cohort, if you will, we do, we
- 2:38want to say goodbye to our graduates and we are, we are
- 2:42assigning characters from the past franchises that we've
- 2:47covered, senior superlatives. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 2:51What's your least favorite Scary movie High.
- 2:52And they graduated, so come see who won what.
- 2:56Yeah. Yeah, so that's that's
- 2:59available, should be available as of now.
- 3:02Unless you're also taking advantage of the early episode
- 3:05release on the Patreon, then I can't guarantee that it will be
- 3:08out. It'll be out by Thursday for
- 3:10sure. Yeah, and it'll, it'll be out.
- 3:12It should be. Yeah.
- 3:13OK, cool. Well, now that we have that out
- 3:15of the way, how about we get into some Texas Chainsaw
- 3:18Massacre? How about first?
- 3:20We talked about some. Votes for the sadness because
- 3:22Jesse came up with a poll this week.
- 3:24That's right, you did. OK.
- 3:26So we talked about the sadness, as Jesse said, and we just
- 3:31wanted to ask in the sadness, what would your sickness or your
- 3:36disease, your sadness disease? I think you would.
- 3:38How? How does the sadness manifest in
- 3:41you? Yes, because Travis said last
- 3:44week that he wants to see an iteration where monsters like me
- 3:48wait until their phone is at 1% to charge it.
- 3:51And that's what that's how the sadness manifests.
- 3:54That's the generous edition of the Sadness where like, you
- 3:58know, it doesn't get that bad. It gets bad, but it doesn't get
- 4:02under your. Skin.
- 4:04Oh, like I said, it depends on who you are anyways.
- 4:06OK so what's your personal sadness disease?
- 4:09So the option is where you're talking to someone while
- 4:11reading, waiting till below 10% to charge your phone and hentai
- 4:17wallpaper on phone. Hentai boob wallpaper You left
- 4:20out the boob part. This character limits, OK, You
- 4:24got to make cuts where you need to.
- 4:26So talking to somebody who's reading got zero.
- 4:29So thankfully we got none of the businessmen people out there.
- 4:32Thank you. Waiting until below 10% to
- 4:35charge your phone. That's 56% of the people and
- 4:38hentai wallpaper on your phone is 44.
- 4:41Percent. All right, well I already
- 4:44admitted that I am not the phone person and this past week while
- 4:50we were watching a basketball game, you were reading and I
- 4:52didn't celebrate during anything so I was quiet and mindful of
- 4:57that. So I guess I have hentai
- 4:59wallpaper boobs on my phone. Wallpaper boobs.
- 5:03Yes Jesse wallpaper boobs on my phone.
- 5:06I will draw them myself though. That might be weirder.
- 5:11Taking commissions y'all hit me up.
- 5:15Help us do the podcast full time.
- 5:20What about you? I think it's very clear.
- 5:22Minus like waiting to charge, you're a fucking.
- 5:25Yeah, I woke up this morning and my phone was angry at me, so I
- 5:29had to plug it in. Never rarely does my phone get
- 5:33in the red yellow. I put it on the low battery mode
- 5:37and I charge that shit. My last phone update, the last
- 5:41system update. Now instead of giving me an
- 5:43alert at 10%, it gives me an alert at 20% and I feel like it
- 5:47was. Mine does so.
- 5:48I feel like it was a personal update.
- 5:50My phone was like, you've got a you're gonna get better about
- 5:53this. Yeah, it'd be better.
- 5:54OK, cool, Now we can talk about the Texas Chainsaw.
- 5:57Where's your? Chainsaw out what the?
- 5:59Fuck, it's with the cosplay stuff in the bag.
- 6:02I don't want to get that. I was gonna have it out for
- 6:05display where are. You displaying it.
- 6:08On the table for who? For me.
- 6:10It's it's right there. Next question OK, the Texas
- 6:14chainsaw massacre released October 11th 1974.
- 6:19We watched it on our blue way but as of the 22nd of February
- 6:24you can stream it on tubi, Peacock, Pluto TV, Plex prime
- 6:28freebie, YouTube premium, YouTube TV prime time where you
- 6:32can rent it from Google player, Fandango at home.
- 6:35A lot of those streaming services have the free option
- 6:37available like this is an incredibly watchable movie.
- 6:40It's so easy to find. If you guys, if none of you have
- 6:43seen this movie, yeah, watch it. Good.
- 6:45Stop. Go watch it.
- 6:46Yes, absolutely. Watch it.
- 6:49Written by Kim Hinkle and Toby Hooper.
- 6:51Directed by Toby Hooper. Music by Wayne Bell and Toby
- 6:55Hooper. No special effects makeup.
- 6:57Now, I don't know that this was fully special effects or if it
- 7:00was just makeup makeup because they're both listed as makeup.
- 7:02But the first one, four grandfather, that has to be
- 7:06special effects. It was.
- 7:08Yeah. That was WE Barnes.
- 7:10And then we have Dorothy J Pearl.
- 7:13OK, cool. It's a very small team on this.
- 7:15Thing Yes, Yes. Starring Marilyn Burns as Sally,
- 7:20Alan Danziger as Jerry, Paul Apartane as Franklin, William
- 7:24Vale as Kirk, Terry McMahon as Pam, Edwin Neil is the
- 7:28Hitchhiker, Jim C Dow as Old Man, John Dugan his grandfather,
- 7:33and Gunnar Hanson as Leatherface.
- 7:35Did you get the cook? That's the old man.
- 7:39They have him listed as old man. Yeah, that's what they were
- 7:40calling each other when they're doing their Larry Curly MO
- 7:43routine. Oh wow, I would have called him
- 7:45with a cook but. OK, yeah, no, he called him Old
- 7:47Man and we had Hitchhiker and obviously Leatherface.
- 7:51Gotcha. OK.
- 7:52Yeah, yeah. All right, Travis, it's time for
- 7:54our favorite game. Budget or bug, Ted?
- 7:58100% bug. Ted.
- 7:59Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 8:01Oh, wait. Hold on, new franchise, we got
- 8:03to explain. Oh, yes, OK, so.
- 8:05You do this every time. If you're new to the show, if
- 8:07Texas Chainsaw caught your eye and this is your first time
- 8:09listening, hi welcome. Sorry that there was a lot of
- 8:12weird stuff before we got into this.
- 8:13If you made it past hentai boobs and you're still here, thank you
- 8:17if. You're here purely for hentai
- 8:18boobs. Well, you know.
- 8:23You know where to find me. So this just started.
- 8:28We read reviews near the end, and somebody had misspelled
- 8:32budget as bug Ted when they were like, this is clearly a very low
- 8:35bug Ted movie. And it tickled us to think that
- 8:38that was like a distinction. That's how low budget it was,
- 8:41that it's Bug Ted. So now that's how we refer to a
- 8:43low budget movie is its Bug Ted. And that for us is in modern
- 8:48times under 10 million. Yeah.
- 8:51And you are correct. It is Bug Ted Bug Teddy Bug
- 8:54Theater Theodore $140,000 which adjusted for inflation is about
- 9:00700,000. Wow.
- 9:02Yeah, you even did the inflation.
- 9:04Look at you. I didn't.
- 9:06I can't take credit for that. That was in an article I read.
- 9:09OK, so I don't have an opening box office, but I do have like
- 9:13the worldwide box office, which was 30.9 million, but adjusted
- 9:18for inflation, got that also 150.8 million.
- 9:23Holy shit. Yeah, yeah, 'cause I was like, I
- 9:25feel like that's a really low number.
- 9:26And then when I read the for inflation, I was like, oh, OK,
- 9:29so in today money it did really good.
- 9:31Yeah. IMDb score ready 7.4.
- 9:38Yeah, yeah, I, I'd almost say rude.
- 9:44It needs to be higher, but that's really good for I and B.
- 9:47Yeah, yeah. OK.
- 9:49I've picked 3 movies from 1974. Now, horror wasn't like, it's
- 9:57not like today where you can easily pull up like several
- 10:00dozen horror movies that came out this year.
- 10:02It's before the big boom. Yeah, and there were a lot of
- 10:06movies from 1974 that I have not seen yet.
- 10:09I say yet because we're always watching more things.
- 10:12That's true. So I picked movies whose
- 10:15headlines sound or whose title sounded like a headline.
- 10:18OK, kind of like the Texas Chainsaw Mass.
- 10:21Yeah. And it which also kind of ties
- 10:23into like the themes of like news that I'm gonna go into that
- 10:27fit in with Texas Chainsaw. Cool.
- 10:29OK, I like this theme. So the first one, it's a
- 10:32werewolf movie. It's called The Beast Must Die.
- 10:35Oh, OK. Which to me sounded like it
- 10:37could be like a satanic panic type of.
- 10:39Yeah, I could see headline. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:43It released in April of 1974. Don't have a date.
- 10:46It's just April, just April. I don't have a budget or World
- 10:50by Gross but it's got a 5.6 out of 10.
- 10:52OK, so good. OK.
- 10:53And it sounded pretty interesting because it was like
- 10:54a bunch of people were invited to a party on a deserted island.
- 10:57One of them's a werewolf. That's a Jessie movie.
- 11:00Yeah, I was like, oh man, It combines a lot of things I
- 11:03really like. You know, let's maybe one day
- 11:06we'll find that one and we'll. Watch him the second one.
- 11:10What have they done to your daughters?
- 11:12Wow, that's guy. That's Jolo written all over.
- 11:15It does and part part way through writing that I was like,
- 11:18I feel like I should just do Jolos.
- 11:20Yeah, plug for the Patreon again.
- 11:24We one time played a game where it was Jolo title or.
- 11:28Jolo or Nolo is what we call it. Yeah, Jolo or Nolo, where Travis
- 11:32like pulled a bunch of Jolo titles but also made a bunch up
- 11:34and I did poorly. It's so they're just so they're
- 11:38the best titles. That one is about, it's really
- 11:43dark. It's about like a human
- 11:44trafficking ring. Oh shit.
- 11:45Yeah. OK, that released August 10th,
- 11:481974. Don't have a budget or gross for
- 11:51it, but it does it. It is Italian, so it's
- 11:53definitely jealous. Yeah, it's a 6.9 out of 10.
- 11:58Wow. Yeah, so sounds like it was very
- 12:00well received. This last one I had written down
- 12:03after I'd gotten the theme and everything, but I found no
- 12:06information on it so I don't have anything to say so.
- 12:08These are all random. You didn't even get black
- 12:10Christmas. Didn't Black Christmas come up
- 12:11this year? Yeah, but I thought that would
- 12:13be too easy. Yeah, I got you, but this one's
- 12:16called Don't Open the Door. Shallow.
- 12:19I don't know. I don't know.
- 12:21I had such a hard time finding any information about it to the
- 12:24point where I was like, does it exist?
- 12:25And the only thing that came up on IMDb was like a drive in
- 12:27Double. Not the last drive in, but like
- 12:29a drive in Double feature. Yeah.
- 12:31And I, I couldn't find any information about what it's
- 12:34about. I don't have a ranking, nothing.
- 12:37I like the title. Yeah, just.
- 12:39Got me intrigued. Yeah, I was really upset because
- 12:42there were two Andy Griffith horror movies in 1974 and I was
- 12:45like I need a third one. So this thing you can be Andy
- 12:48Griffith. He did have 3 movies that year
- 12:53but one was ATV movie and it was not horror.
- 12:55I would have given you the OK to that cuz that's the horrific
- 12:59part is it wasn't a horror movie and this being so apart.
- 13:03I was like Andy Griffith. That Andy Griffith.
- 13:06Yes, that Andy Griffith. That's I can't believe he was in
- 13:09horror. Jesus, such weird.
- 13:11Yeah, OK, I know we've had a rough time with tag lines
- 13:16lately. Yeah, we are about to be eaten.
- 13:19Good. Oh hell yeah dude, the tag.
- 13:21These are one. There are three on the poster
- 13:24alone. The tag line on the poster is
- 13:27one of my all time favorites. Well, and it's just, it is, it
- 13:30is iconic, Yeah. Who will survive and what will
- 13:34be left of them? So fucking good Texas Chainsaw
- 13:38Massacre. Who will survive and what will
- 13:39be left? Of them, some additional tag
- 13:41lines that are on that poster. If you look, there's a American
- 13:44because most bizarre and brutal crimes with an exclamation point
- 13:48and then A dot dot dot dot dot dot.
- 13:49Dot dot. OK.
- 13:51And then what happened is true. Now the motion picture that's
- 13:54just as real. Oh cool.
- 13:57And now I've got a bunch of tag lines.
- 13:58Some of these are from like re releases of the movie.
- 14:01Yeah, that kind of happens. Yeah, the idyllic summer's day
- 14:04that became a nightmare of fear and blood.
- 14:10It really happened. It's terrifying.
- 14:12It's here. That first one was UK video.
- 14:15This one's Australia video. OK.
- 14:19Oh OK. Australia also took the UK one.
- 14:21I'm not going to reread that. Nothing cuts like the original.
- 14:25That's the Ultimate Edition DVD. OK, wow, it's actually
- 14:28specifying. The Australia theatrical tagline
- 14:31banned for over 7 years now, finally released intact, uncut.
- 14:37Aggressive. Well, they're all caps.
- 14:39Fucking Aussies over there y'all.
- 14:41Y'all go hard. Oh God, you can't.
- 14:45America's most bizarre crime? Brutal beyond description,
- 14:48critically beyond comprehension. That's also Australian
- 14:52theatrical. They must have like wrapped that
- 14:54shit up over there in Australia. Toby Hooper's 1974 original
- 14:58uncut all massacre facts based on the true story.
- 15:03OK, totally committed to scaring you witless in quotes.
- 15:08OK. That one can you survive dot dot
- 15:12dot it happened it. Happened.
- 15:16People are talking, people are talking, people say.
- 15:19For five young friends, a typical summer afternoon drive
- 15:21becomes a terrifying nightmare. That's on the DVD cover.
- 15:25Once you stop screaming then you'll start talking about it.
- 15:29That's pretty good. That's pretty good.
- 15:32Before Halloween, before Friday the 13th, before Scream, there
- 15:37was Saw, which is really funny because we covered all of those
- 15:42franchises first. And then we're and then we had
- 15:45saw so like and then so I was like, Nah, hold on.
- 15:52Wait, wait, wait, wait. But wait a couple years.
- 15:56Yeah, so that's a lot of tag lines.
- 15:59I like hearing the international stuff, and that's going to be
- 16:01important. We're going to talk about some
- 16:03of that with our fun facts. Here's the thing with fun facts.
- 16:06Y'all super nernst out here. Don't get mad at me for not
- 16:09doing deep dives. This is fun facts, not deep
- 16:13dives. There's so much information out
- 16:17there about this movie, like theses have been written on it.
- 16:20Men, women in chainsaws. A lot of that, like I mean it
- 16:24like a lot of it directly talks about Sally Hardesty and her
- 16:29role is like the original final girl there.
- 16:32There's just there is so much written about this, I've got
- 16:36some of the more like baser fun facts.
- 16:38Travis watched a making of documentary recently and so feel
- 16:42free to chime in with stuff. Yeah, I will.
- 16:45I got I got loads of information.
- 16:47So if you're a more casual person, don't know a ton about
- 16:51this, this will probably be interesting for you.
- 16:53If you're a super deep dive person, this might not be any
- 16:56new information, but it's just this is a historical movie for a
- 17:00lot of reasons. It's been around 51 years.
- 17:04Yeah. Like it's.
- 17:06It would be impossible to cover every facet of this movie on
- 17:09this podcast. So.
- 17:12So we're just going to start off with some of the stuff I got.
- 17:15So they did try to limit the gore in hopes of getting APG
- 17:18rating. I, Toby Hooper, I feel like
- 17:21probably grew up in like one of our households.
- 17:23I was like, yeah, no, it's fine. It won't like look, it's fine I
- 17:25feel like. People need to understand
- 17:27because this this gets thrown around a lot, PG back in the 70s
- 17:31it was PG or R There was no PG13.
- 17:35OK. There was like P like
- 17:37Poltergeist was PGI. Always think of that.
- 17:40That one always throws me. Out that was also before PG13.
- 17:43Thank you for clarifying because I did not know.
- 17:45That you didn't know? Yeah, that became.
- 17:47A. So then I rescinded my joke.
- 17:48It's less funny now. It's still funny because like in
- 17:52like when you hear that today, you're like, aw, come on, man.
- 17:54But no, PG back then was a completely different beats like
- 17:57R, You had to earn that shit with that like heavy stuff,
- 18:00which they did with this movie. Yeah, he fought for the PG, but
- 18:03I mean, you're not going to get fucking PG out of this right
- 18:06here. Yeah, and I mean, they really
- 18:08did try and limit the amount of gore they were working on.
- 18:11Obviously a limited budget they were working with limited like
- 18:13makeup and prosthetics. Some of the blood was not fake.
- 18:17And I'll get to that in a minute.
- 18:20So yeah, it's just, I mean, obviously it is what it is.
- 18:23But I do think about it because it's not incredibly graphic in
- 18:28terms of like the violence we see.
- 18:30Like a lot of it is left to our own heads.
- 18:33But you see a shoot tunnel like body parts and bones rearranged
- 18:37very artfully so you know different types of gore.
- 18:42Think about it. The gore, a lot of it was still
- 18:45in the script. They had planned for it to be a
- 18:47pretty bloody movie, but whenever it came down to
- 18:50actually doing the effects, there were the effects guy was
- 18:54kind of he, he was in Toby's ear a little bit.
- 18:56He's like, hey man, like maybe not bloody this up.
- 18:59I think the scene that I'm specifically remembering
- 19:01remembering is the one where he takes Pam and puts her on the
- 19:04meat hook and I guess Chainsaw and Kirk's head off.
- 19:07Like he said this guy, by the way, the most jaded member of
- 19:13the he fucking hates it. And he talked shit about the
- 19:17movie The entire time. It sounded like they kind of
- 19:19treated him like shit, honestly, but he he basically was like,
- 19:23don't do it. People are just going to wonder
- 19:25or try to like figure out how you did that effect, which that
- 19:27didn't really make much sense to me because that's some of the
- 19:30best stuff. Like David Lynch Eraser had the
- 19:34baby. Nobody to this day knows how
- 19:36they made that baby. That baby is one of the most
- 19:39disturbing fucking things in that movie.
- 19:41But people are. How the fuck did he get that
- 19:43baby to look like that? And here's the thing too, is
- 19:45that the people that try to figure out, usually they kind of
- 19:50like that type of stuff. I love trying to figure out how
- 19:52certain effects are done. I love looking at different,
- 19:55like fake blood on screen and trying to figure out like what
- 19:58the base is based on how it's drying.
- 20:00Like that type of stuff is fun for me.
- 20:02And a lot of times when I tell people like, oh, I was trying
- 20:05out this effect and they're like, oh, I never would have
- 20:07thought to do it that way. And I will say there's probably
- 20:09also an element too. They didn't have enough in the
- 20:12budget to get a second Leatherface costume.
- 20:16And they were afraid to wash his because they didn't want it to
- 20:20get lost in the laundry or fade or change color.
- 20:24So Gunner Hansen wore that same outfit and mask for 12 to 16
- 20:29hours a day, seven days a week for a full month in the Texas
- 20:33heat in summer, where it was regularly hitting 100°.
- 20:37They were all nasty and gross. Marilyn Burns.
- 20:40Her costume was like stiff from fake blood by the end.
- 20:43They saw that her they accidentally dyed her hair red
- 20:46from like all the blood that was in her hair.
- 20:48I could believe that. Yeah.
- 20:49Especially like in the 70s where that would have just been like,
- 20:52straight up dying. Like, not easy wash even
- 20:54nowadays, like, blood is gonna stain your skin.
- 20:57Yeah, the fake blood is, but not all of it was fake because they
- 21:02were having issues with the tube that was supposed to release the
- 21:05blood on her finger. And they actually cut her finger
- 21:08in that scene where she's feeding Grandpa.
- 21:10So I don't know if that means that they didn't clarify if John
- 21:14Dugan actually drank her blood or not.
- 21:15I hope we didn't. The most interesting thing about
- 21:18him? Never mind, you might have.
- 21:21I don't I don't have any more information about him.
- 21:22Go ahead. He was He was the youngest
- 21:24person on the set as the oldest character.
- 21:27He still has the youngest looking IMDb profile and that's
- 21:30including all of the like rest in.
- 21:32Conventions still. You know, folks that are no
- 21:34longer with us. He was like 19, yeah.
- 21:39And seeing like the whole like they did like a step by step of
- 21:42like showing how his prosthetics were applied.
- 21:46He was fucking baked on. Me, I can imagine, yeah.
- 21:50So Toby Hooper kind of came up with this concept while he was
- 21:53working as an assistant director slash documentary cameraman at
- 21:58University of Texas in Austin. He was looking at like, changes
- 22:04in culture and politics. And part of the reason that,
- 22:08like, he put forth this whole, like, this film is true, it's
- 22:10based on real events, is like feeling kind of jaded and
- 22:12feeling like the government's like, constantly lying to us.
- 22:15And like, so he wanted to, like, do that kind of same kind of lie
- 22:18because you have to remember some of the stuff going around
- 22:20at this time. We had Watergate, the 1973
- 22:22economic recession, the 1973 oil crisis, Vietnam, all of those
- 22:27things are happening. And he also noticed that there
- 22:30was a lot of like graphic coverage of violence of these
- 22:32things happening, especially like when you think of Vietnam.
- 22:35And he was just like, it just feels like we're talking about
- 22:37the bloody acts that are happening.
- 22:39And it feels like man is like the real problem.
- 22:43And he also used Ed Gain as inspiration, which that's
- 22:48pretty, I think that's a pretty common fact.
- 22:50But Ed Gain was used as like a lot of inspiration in horror
- 22:53movies around that time. He was talking about that and
- 22:56that thing I watched where that was a story that stuck with him
- 22:59since he was a kid because he, Ed Gein was from like that whole
- 23:03thing happened in Wisconsin and he had family from Wisconsin.
- 23:05So they would travel down and like they realized that that
- 23:09they would tell him that story and they realized that it made
- 23:11him super uncomfortable. So they would like keep bringing
- 23:14him up. As he was a kid.
- 23:16And I think that really stuck with him.
- 23:20I've got some alternate titles. We've got Saturn in retrograde
- 23:25head cheese, stocking, Leatherface and Leatherface.
- 23:30Leatherface is what's on the original script.
- 23:32Yeah. And that I think that makes
- 23:34sense. Yeah.
- 23:36He cast mostly like unknown local actors, like people that
- 23:40have been like, you know, commercials, plays, things like
- 23:43that. And the opening narration was
- 23:46performed by Jean Laraquette and he was paid in marijuana.
- 23:51Hell yeah, he was an. Official dude too, yeah.
- 23:55He was like the biggest. Yeah, I was going to say he was,
- 23:57yeah. He was the most like established
- 23:59person at that point, Gutter Hansen.
- 24:03He regarded Leatherface as having an intellectual
- 24:05disability disorder. And to prepare for that
- 24:08adequately, he actually spent some time at like a special
- 24:11needs school kind of learning some of the mannerisms and like
- 24:15vocal cadences and whatnot. And one final fact, fun fact
- 24:19that I have is that the gas station is now A4 themed
- 24:22attraction slash motel slash BBQ restaurant.
- 24:25So it is still I would be like you visit it today.
- 24:28I. Would be so conflicted to get
- 24:30BBQ from there. I don't, it just would feel
- 24:33weird. Would you be, like questioning
- 24:35it? Yeah, like how authentic is
- 24:36this? Yeah, like, am I actually eating
- 24:39people? This is what I came here for.
- 24:41I wanted to actually eat people, but you didn't expect that to
- 24:46there's. Sincerity on your face.
- 24:51Yeah, I would be like afraid of that though.
- 24:54Yeah, so. OK, cool.
- 24:56Is that all you got? Yeah, that's all I that's all I
- 24:58had room for on my paper. Oh, OK.
- 25:00At that point, I know I barely scratched the surface on some of
- 25:03the history of this movie, but. There's a lot, yeah.
- 25:06There's one thing that I want to bring up and I guess some of
- 25:09this other stuff I can bring up, like as we talk about the movie,
- 25:13but I had made comments before about how the budget was made-up
- 25:18because the mafia got involved and that they actually had more
- 25:22than what it seemed. But that was not true.
- 25:25It was the other way around. It was the distribution that had
- 25:30the mafia get involved. OK.
- 25:32Yeah, a lot of them got screwed over.
- 25:34And I think this is one of the reasons why that special effects
- 25:37art director dude was so pissed off is because they all got
- 25:40fucked over. Like they were promising the
- 25:44actors and everybody points on like shares of the movie.
- 25:48So like if it did well, they were going to get a lot of money
- 25:51because it did well, not like none of them obviously expected
- 25:54it to be what it was today. They ought.
- 25:55That was going to be like a stupid movie and they were
- 25:57shitting on it actively as they were shooting the movie.
- 26:00But they realized that the distributor that they agreed to
- 26:05do this with, which was Vortex, was only one of like three other
- 26:10companies that had stakes in the movie.
- 26:13So when they were getting points, they were getting points
- 26:15of points towards that. And then they went up to New
- 26:22York, a couple of them did to confront the guy that had like a
- 26:27majority of them or whatever. And the guy that was like
- 26:30responsible for like the whole scam because he was part of the
- 26:32mafia. And he like went up to their
- 26:34office and the guy had like 2 hench men, like like very
- 26:38cartoonish, like right next to him.
- 26:40And like they're like, look like show us your books because
- 26:42they're we're going to do an audit.
- 26:43We need to know how much we actually deserve for this movie.
- 26:47And then the guy's like, I'm sorry, it's not available.
- 26:49And then one of the guys from the movie is like, OK, well then
- 26:54we have no choice but to sue you.
- 26:56And the mob boss just looked to the guy in the eye and said you
- 26:59don't have the balls to sue me. Oh my God, yeah, no, I was going
- 27:04to say the budget, definitely. That's not made-up because they
- 27:07went over budget during the editing and post production.
- 27:10Which is part of they had to keep selling their shares, Toby.
- 27:13And like whoever was working on the editing, they couldn't.
- 27:17Like they had to keep doing it and they just lost out on money.
- 27:21Like I saw the most that they got was like $4000 for this.
- 27:27That's crazy. Yeah, that is crazy.
- 27:29It is insane but. You know what's not crazy?
- 27:32What? Talking about this movie.
- 27:33Yeah, let's do it. What's the good Travis?
- 27:36Let's go. We're gonna go good, bad, ugly
- 27:38and absurd, and we're each gonna share them one at a time.
- 27:43Yeah. So, all right, So these are the
- 27:45things that I enjoyed about this movie.
- 27:46OK, so this movie is probably one of the most terrifying
- 27:51movies I've ever seen in my entire life.
- 27:54This thing fucking traumatized me as a kid, and I think a lot
- 27:57of that has to do with the look of it.
- 27:59Everything is so well crafted. It feels like, you know how this
- 28:04place feels like you look at it and I'm like instant.
- 28:07Like, we're not in Texas, obviously, but growing up in
- 28:10Tennessee and Kentucky, like, I know how that heat.
- 28:14Yeah. Like I know those large like
- 28:17overly grown grassy fields and. This is a movie that I love to
- 28:22play in the like Dead Heat of Summer because it gets you
- 28:25immersed in it because you feel that so well through this movie.
- 28:30This movie has a texture to it. Yeah.
- 28:33I feel like. The location is like a character
- 28:37of itself. No, I feel like that ain't
- 28:39rights. Yeah, it loses its texture, man.
- 28:45But it does. It has like a really like a
- 28:47really authentic look to it that kind of adds to it.
- 28:51The thing that is really cool about him having that experience
- 28:55as like a documentary guy is that he was able to present it
- 28:59in a very documentary fashion in the beginning.
- 29:02And I was watching like a breakdown of it the other day.
- 29:05It's interesting. He opened it up the the 1st 3rd
- 29:08of this movie is shot and told like a documentary of that era.
- 29:14So OK, when people were walking in here and they had the the
- 29:18overlay of like the audio, that was how a lot of these
- 29:21documentaries were presented. So like, it's very much
- 29:24presented in a very real manner. And I believe this was real when
- 29:29I was a kid too. So I was bought in, but like
- 29:32there's a point when the movie shifts from that into actually
- 29:36going into horror. And that's when they arrive at
- 29:39the house, The Franklin house, which is the style of the shots
- 29:44changes then. And the whole presentation of
- 29:48the movie is more like, this is a horror movie now, which is
- 29:52really, really cool. And that, like, the movie is so
- 29:55incredibly well shot, like, it has one of the fame, like the
- 29:59most notorious Dolly shots, like with the one, like the swing set
- 30:02with her walking up to the house.
- 30:04Yeah. And her and Kirk are there.
- 30:06Pam, that is. It brings me to Leatherface, his
- 30:10whole entrance probably one of the best.
- 30:13Oh my God, it it never doesn't make me jump.
- 30:16It's so fucking good I don't it. Just appears it's so fast.
- 30:20Yeah, the guy just stumbles in there and then he just like
- 30:23walks into frame, like from the door, and then it just like pans
- 30:26up and then he just bludgeons this guy with that.
- 30:29And then the closing of the door, the slamming of the door.
- 30:31Yeah, great way to introduce a character.
- 30:33That walked so Jigsaw could run. Yeah, and that look, the mask is
- 30:40one of the most terrifying looks I've ever seen.
- 30:43For, like, a horror villain. It makes me uneasy to this day.
- 30:47Yeah, it's so, so fucking good. It had good messaging to it,
- 30:52which is really cool. I feel like that was a thing of
- 30:54this in this era of horror, because this was the same year
- 30:57as Black Christmas. Like people were having a lot to
- 30:59say and they were saying it with these movies and they were doing
- 31:03it in a very effective manner. Yeah, there's a lot of like
- 31:05revolutionary stuff being talked about with it because we've got,
- 31:08you know, obviously like there's a whole lot of stuff with
- 31:10Vietnam, right? Like that's right there.
- 31:12But we've also got Franklin in his wheelchair and we see.
- 31:17And I got a lot of I got a lot of thoughts and opinions about
- 31:20Franklin that I'll get to in a minute.
- 31:21But like, you know, him having that open frustration and us
- 31:25seeing how much he struggles just on a simple road trip with
- 31:28friends, people that care about him, seeing that, seeing like
- 31:32Leatherface, like there's and we'll get into this at some
- 31:35point throughout the franchise, I'm positive.
- 31:38But there there are some schools of thoughts about like is
- 31:41Leatherface like is there a a trans symbolism?
- 31:45Yeah, well, they talked about that.
- 31:48He, and it was very much intended.
- 31:50I mean, like, he took over like the matriarch role of the house
- 31:55because like, he felt like there was a void there and then he
- 31:58took it upon himself to be that, like that role.
- 32:01And we're, we're using he, him because that's what's used in
- 32:03the movie. We're using the language of the
- 32:05movie. Yeah.
- 32:05I don't know. Yeah.
- 32:06I think just from all other aspects, he yeah, I'm just, he's
- 32:11fluid. Yeah, I'm just, I'm just
- 32:13clarifying like, you know, because we brought this topic
- 32:16up. So I just want to clarify.
- 32:17It's not a like. Yeah.
- 32:19Slight or anything? Yeah, I mean.
- 32:21It's like Weather Face is very much presented as that from the
- 32:24get go. And then yeah, yeah.
- 32:27But like, there are some movies that even like it.
- 32:28It shows him putting on like the makeup and stuff.
- 32:31Like it's a very intentional piece of his character.
- 32:34It's an iconic look, the Pretty Woman look.
- 32:36It's so good. I like it.
- 32:38Yeah. And that's like, his character
- 32:40is actually really good too, because with a lot of these
- 32:43villains, they, especially this era and slash villains in
- 32:46general, they're so fucking basic and bare.
- 32:49Like all of it. It's just, it's meant to be bare
- 32:52because I don't know, for a lot of people, that's scary.
- 32:55Like, you don't know anything and there's nothing to be said
- 32:58about them. They're just here and they're
- 32:59going to fuck your day up. But like, I like Weatherface
- 33:02being kind of a victim in his own right.
- 33:05Yeah. When people are coming into his
- 33:07house and he is reacting like he's scared.
- 33:11That whole scene where he's like, checking the windows and
- 33:13like, puts his hands on his head, like, what the fuck is
- 33:15happening here? He's so.
- 33:16Stressed he wasn't supposed to be alone either.
- 33:18His brother left him. Yeah, and the thing like he,
- 33:22he's a tragic character because he isn't like this, because he
- 33:25wants to be like this. He's been molded and I've been.
- 33:28Thinking about this so much because he really is such a case
- 33:31of like nature versus nurture because he just wants to do his
- 33:34arts and crafts. Like look at that furniture he
- 33:36built. It didn't have to be built out
- 33:39of body parts. But he's in this fucked up
- 33:41family. Like, I don't know, if we'd
- 33:44adopted that little baby, he'd have a whole craft room, you
- 33:47know? Yeah, he would.
- 33:48Not from, you know, he's not making people furniture for us,
- 33:52but. Wink.
- 33:56But like, he's such a cool, there's depth to him that's not
- 34:00there for a lot of these types of characters, and I think that
- 34:03that helps make it truly special.
- 34:07There's so much I can gush about this movie.
- 34:09I think I need to stop myself here so you can actually talk
- 34:12though. Yeah, no, there's, there's a
- 34:14lot. Everything you said I absolutely
- 34:17agree with I so I don't want to like, I don't want to retread
- 34:20all of that. I want to talk a lot about the
- 34:22set design because I think it just, it's so good.
- 34:26Especially like when we get like there's just new things to take
- 34:30in every single time, like we're in that household.
- 34:34Yeah. And it's just, it's really like
- 34:37the ordinateness of like some of that furniture, all of those
- 34:41chicken feathers in that one, right?
- 34:42Like you, you feel like you can smell that room.
- 34:45Yeah. Like it's, it's done so well.
- 34:50Yeah. I just and and the storyline is
- 34:52simple and I think it's good. It didn't need to be more
- 34:56complex than what it was. That's the thing man, this movie
- 34:59like. It touches on a lot of things
- 35:01without like bloating the story it's.
- 35:03So basic and that that makes me it gives me hope that somebody
- 35:07that would like to do something that one day, like you can make
- 35:10probably one of the greatest movies of all time.
- 35:12It can be the most basic fucking movie ever.
- 35:14But like, if you execute it well and now like everything else is
- 35:18firing, you can have like an amazing movie.
- 35:20Yeah, yeah. And the the cast of characters,
- 35:24like they're all like, honestly, I think the women characters and
- 35:30Franklin are the more interesting ones, which I think
- 35:32is kind of a reversal of what you tend to see in a lot of
- 35:35horror movies where it's going to be like the dudes that you're
- 35:37going to know the most about and you're going to be rooting for
- 35:39and cheering for. And we kind of dispatch of them
- 35:42right away, you know what I mean?
- 35:44And I think it's interesting. But yeah, I just think like this
- 35:47movie, I it just, it does what it does.
- 35:51It does really well, Yeah. OK, so some of the bad stuff.
- 35:55Yeah, I do have bad. Bad things to say about this
- 35:58movie? My thing with me with this
- 36:02movie, it's a short movie, but once we get to that dinner scene
- 36:08at the end, it drags a bit. A lot happens, and a lot of
- 36:14nothing happens is it's a lot of just shots of, like, them
- 36:18reacting and laughing and, like, taunting Sally and Sally's eye.
- 36:23Yeah. And she's just kind of bugging
- 36:24out the entire time. And then there's like, a minute
- 36:27of, like, the grandpa trying to sledgehammer.
- 36:29And that's funny. I get it.
- 36:30That was probably meant to be humorous.
- 36:32But it doesn't fully land for me.
- 36:36Like it's, it's good, but like, God, it just is so drawn out.
- 36:40And then it kind of kills the momentum that we had there for a
- 36:43while. It was going on a fucking roll
- 36:46right there. And then it just halts.
- 36:48Yeah, I it really like the, the pacing is a little bit off
- 36:52because we like bam, bam, bam, bam, get rid of four of the
- 36:57characters we're following back-to-back.
- 36:59It actually takes a while before we get that death, too.
- 37:03Yeah, there's a lot of groundwork laid and then, but
- 37:05once we do get deaths, they're racking up fast.
- 37:08Yeah. And so then we're like it, it's
- 37:11a very fast peek with those. And then we've got Sally and
- 37:15she's a fantastic final girl and like her being captured by the
- 37:20old man, the cook, whatever you want to call him.
- 37:24Like that. That moment is also really
- 37:26fantastic. Like that's a nice moment to
- 37:28have that, lol. And she's staring into the fire
- 37:30and she was like thinking about everything she just saw.
- 37:33And that's great. But yeah, when we get to the
- 37:35dinner, it does. It's meant to be the climax, but
- 37:37it somehow feels anticlimactic. Yeah, it it does.
- 37:40Yeah, and also what happened to the truck driver?
- 37:43He's still running to this day. I'm, I'm telling you, that man
- 37:48is like Forrest Gump. He is like thin.
- 37:51He is. He's guy.
- 37:53He's he's wiry now. He just he throws a wrench.
- 37:59My. Favorite Ryan?
- 38:00I I saw where they were doing multiple cuts of that and like,
- 38:03you know that shot where he used to throwing it right at the
- 38:05camera. The guy like ran turned around
- 38:08through the wrench and then he just like put his arms under
- 38:11his, like under each other, like doing a little pose.
- 38:14I don't know. How do you describe this?
- 38:15Pose crossed his arms. Crossed his arms.
- 38:17There we go. He crossed his arms and just
- 38:20like did a pose of the camera key.
- 38:23Yeah, I like that truck driver. I could have done more with him.
- 38:26He's so funny. He's like, I don't know if
- 38:28that's meant to be funny, but he the whole thing when he just
- 38:32gets out of the truck and he's like, yeah, I'll give you a
- 38:35ride. What the fuck is that?
- 38:38But the best? Thing was how immediately he
- 38:41reacted like what have what have your routes done like man that
- 38:45this is not phasing you as much as you should.
- 38:48Trucker C should, I guess. Yeah.
- 38:50And he doesn't say a fucking word.
- 38:52Doesn't even scream. No, just yeah.
- 38:55It's it's funny. Yeah, I just, I wanted a little
- 38:58bit more. I wanted to know what happened.
- 38:59We got resolution on every other character.
- 39:01I wanted to know what happened to the truck driver.
- 39:05OK. Did you have any pads?
- 39:07That was it. That was it, the pacing in the
- 39:09truck driver. OK, cool.
- 39:10All right, ugly, Well, my ugly is all of the cattle and pig
- 39:15slaughter talk that goes on in this movie.
- 39:17It's really upsetting. I don't like hearing about it,
- 39:19but they go into like deep, deep detail with how that shit's
- 39:22done. And you basically see how it's
- 39:25performed just on humans in this movie.
- 39:28But it's I don't like it And I I understand that's the point.
- 39:32They're drawing comparisons, but that doesn't mean I have to like
- 39:36it. Yeah, yeah, fair mine.
- 39:40OK, two things can be true, and the two truths can exist at the
- 39:47same time. OK.
- 39:50It is incredibly frustrating to live your life with these
- 39:55different kind of needs, and the world is just not accommodating
- 39:59to it. And I feel for Franklin, where
- 40:02he is so frustrated. The way they have to pull over
- 40:04for his bathroom breaks. He has to pee into a can, and he
- 40:07rolls down the hill. I feel for him when they get to
- 40:09the house and he can't go up the stairs.
- 40:11I feel for him when they need to go look for everybody and it's
- 40:14like he either has to be left alone or, you know how Sally
- 40:19push him through. I think it's fantastic that they
- 40:22showed this storyline and they were so plain with it.
- 40:24Yeah. And it sucks, and it's something
- 40:27that we should talk about more as a society and be more aware
- 40:29of and more empathetic too. Yeah, I saw somebody make a oh,
- 40:33do you have like a follow? Well, that's my first truth.
- 40:35I'll go with your second, sorry. Franklin is goddamn annoying.
- 40:39Yeah, he like, I get his frustration and I get why he
- 40:44whines, but that's all he ever does.
- 40:46And when he's not whining, he's talking about pig slaughter and
- 40:49I can't. Oh God, they would not want to
- 40:52spend time with him either. And it has nothing to do with
- 40:55the fact that we'd have to set up special ramps and we'd have
- 40:57to push him through rough terrain.
- 40:59It has to do everything with his personality.
- 41:03Like, it's so funny I you got to give the actor chops.
- 41:07Yes. There or props for that because
- 41:10he did such a good job and they were talking about that.
- 41:13He himself is like, I get it. I I, I fucking hate the bastard.
- 41:18Like he he's a whiny. It's funny.
- 41:20He was like doing like impressions of himself.
- 41:22He's like, yeah, like Franklin. He was just.
- 41:24Like, hey, hey, it's just like. And we do every time we watch
- 41:28this movie, it's to the point now where Talia, like, yeah,
- 41:31shoot, like her ears go back. She's like you guys are.
- 41:33Sally yeah, he he got to the point to where he was so
- 41:40effective at it that the cast said we didn't have to act.
- 41:45We hated him. And it got to the point where
- 41:48they ostracized the actor too cuz he like they're like, I just
- 41:53don't, I don't want it. Like he's too good at.
- 41:56It I think it's telling when the person he had the best chemistry
- 41:58with was the hitchhiker. Yeah, like, yeah.
- 42:03Yeah. So that's not ugliest that we
- 42:05have a world where people are not easily accommodated, but we
- 42:09also have a world where we all know this guy.
- 42:12I saw in. Red.
- 42:13Not too long ago, it was like a month or two ago where somebody
- 42:15on red was like, why do people hate Franklin?
- 42:18Like, I feel bad for him. I'm like, I don't know, man.
- 42:20Like, I get it. He's got some like, yeah, he's
- 42:23got those complications, but. He absolutely has a right to be
- 42:25frustrated. I'm not saying he brings.
- 42:28Some of it on himself by being difficult.
- 42:32Yeah, he like, he's just not socially adept.
- 42:37No. And that has nothing to do with
- 42:39him being in a wheelchair. No, yeah, like it has.
- 42:43I could see him absolutely having this.
- 42:45Like if if he could have walked right up the stairs with the
- 42:48rest of them, he would have been cock blocking the couples, you
- 42:51know what I mean? And he would not realize that he
- 42:52was doing it. Yeah, it's just he, I feel like
- 42:57even in that scene, like Kirk's like, hey, like, you know, let
- 43:00me clean it up. And then he's just like, no, let
- 43:02me look at this symbol. Did he?
- 43:03And he said he said, OK, you go ahead and clean it up.
- 43:06And you know what Franklin did? Didn't clean it up clean.
- 43:09It up just will try to will into.
- 43:10That house let it just dry onto the van.
- 43:13Yeah, he didn't bother trying to clean them up.
- 43:15He said well I'll probably die anyway so if he cares, and I'm
- 43:19not even joking, he probably thought that because he was
- 43:21convinced the hitchhiker was coming back to kill him.
- 43:23That's true. Yeah.
- 43:25OK, let's do some absurd stuff. OK, I'm really excited for this.
- 43:29All right, so here's a list of my absurds.
- 43:35The whole opening scene with the hitchhiker in the Fan, Like he's
- 43:39in a groove. He's rolling, he's got some new
- 43:41friends. And then he goes and he like,
- 43:43does the thing where he thinks that he's like, hey, we're all
- 43:46in this together. But he takes it too far.
- 43:48He takes the knife and he cuts his hand.
- 43:50And it becomes so awkward in that moment where everybody's
- 43:53like, what the fuck are you doing?
- 43:54And you can see he like has that realization in his face.
- 43:57Like took it too far. Yeah, yeah, went too far.
- 43:59Didn't read the vibe Yeah, I I liked his foolproof business
- 44:04plan of like, I took a picture now you give me money.
- 44:10I. Like how Franklin's like not
- 44:11very good picture. It's very David Bowie.
- 44:14They're like, not very good. Is it next Franklin again taking
- 44:21his knife and just stabbing the van?
- 44:24And then Kirk's like Franklin cut it out.
- 44:27He's like, oh, I don't know, I was just stabbing the van over
- 44:30here and just. And you know, Kirk shouldn't
- 44:32have trusted Franklin to clean the van because he's already
- 44:34proven he doesn't care about the van.
- 44:36He. Doesn't need a knife.
- 44:38Yeah, what you're. So it's like Italian when she
- 44:40gets in her wicking fits. He's like, I just, I don't, I'm
- 44:42just stabbing stuff. What happened here?
- 44:44I don't even know. Franklin's tantrum when he he
- 44:48gets to the house where he has the whole breakdown, it's just
- 44:52so funny. It's like, again, I get the
- 44:55frustration, but also he's that man slobbered all over himself.
- 44:59He did. I think if we put him in my
- 45:02under one year old nephew that spilled a plate of spaghetti on,
- 45:05well, it didn't spill. He dropped a plate of spaghetti
- 45:07on me earlier, bit by bit. If we put them in a slobbering
- 45:11contest, I think Franklin would win.
- 45:14He would do it, yeah. And my final is Leatherface's
- 45:17stamina, because that motherfucker is bulky, big, and
- 45:20he can fucking go. He do cardio.
- 45:22He. Do Yeah, he goes fast and long
- 45:25and how the fuck does he maintain?
- 45:28It's insane. All right?
- 45:30What are your absurds? Well, one that Saturn's in
- 45:33retrograde, you know, I never really paid attention to her
- 45:37saying that, but I was like, OK, weird, weird astrology stuff
- 45:40going on here. I.
- 45:41Can't remember, was that like was that a lot in the movie or
- 45:46was it there's a one scene I remember?
- 45:47There's that and also Pam. Read their horoscopes.
- 45:51I think it was said that Franklin's a Leo like you.
- 45:55Sally is a Capricorn like me. Hey.
- 45:58Yeah, so. I get Franklin and you get
- 46:00Sally. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:02I actually pulled up the script and was reading it cuz I kind of
- 46:05wanted to. How did this transfer from page
- 46:08to screen? And a lot of the conversation is
- 46:12about the horoscope stuff from her in the beginning.
- 46:14It's like a lot of like overlaid stuff and like, yeah, so I
- 46:17didn't, I couldn't remember if that ended up actually being a
- 46:19lot in the movie. I remember her talking about it
- 46:21a bit. Yeah.
- 46:23And then my favorite, I was, I was, I never noticed this before
- 46:28that. I caught it watching it this
- 46:30last time. And it took everything in me not
- 46:31to like burst out laughing because I needed, I needed to
- 46:34have this moment with you all as we recorded.
- 46:36OK, so they cut Sally Singer and Grandpa starts sucking her
- 46:41blood, right. And it's implied that Grandpa
- 46:43has been in a deep sleep for who knows how long.
- 46:46He's mummified. So he starts drinking and he
- 46:50does that little happy dance that girls do when they get
- 46:53food. They're really excited.
- 46:54Oh, yes, he does like a little, like he does a shimmy and he
- 46:58kicks his feet a little bit. And I'm not even.
- 47:00It's not like a shake or whatever.
- 47:02Like it's a it's like actually happy.
- 47:03Yeah. Like he's doing a little
- 47:05shoulder rock. And then?
- 47:06I was paying closer attention. He does.
- 47:09I never noticed that he has that big, like, business suit.
- 47:13It's like that fat cat business suit.
- 47:15Yeah, from like the 20s or whatever.
- 47:17I don't know, Like he probably existed back then.
- 47:20Yeah, no, it's, it's amazing because he's just like.
- 47:23I need to pay attention to that. Yeah, I never noticed that.
- 47:26Before my favorite. All right, got anything else?
- 47:32That was that was my main I nothing else will be as an
- 47:36amazing as it catches grandpa shimmy grandpa doing the happy
- 47:40girl Hungry Girl shimmy. Yeah.
- 47:43OK. So let's rate it.
- 47:45OK. It's it's in for me, obviously.
- 47:48I think I may give it a 9.5. Wow, OK, so where's the .5 come
- 47:54from? I can't.
- 47:59It's a gut thing. OK, Yeah.
- 48:01Like, I don't really. I don't know.
- 48:04No, that's fun. I get it.
- 48:05Yeah, I just, for me, this is like one of the most perfect
- 48:09horror movies. That, yeah.
- 48:10Exists out there. It's you can put this up against
- 48:13about anything and like it. It is superior to that if you
- 48:17ask me. OK, all right.
- 48:18Well, between Halloween, though, and that's the coolest battle.
- 48:22I don't know. We have a starting average of
- 48:249.75. All right, perhaps you can talk
- 48:27me into a ton. We shall see.
- 48:29We let's give it a shot. OK, and I'd like summer Dr.
- 48:34becomes a nightmare. That's that's some of the
- 48:37opening narration. Basically, yeah.
- 48:40And just like, hey, this is some shit that went down.
- 48:43Totally real. Yeah, is they were having a good
- 48:45drive. We don't actually know where
- 48:47they were driving to you, but they were driving.
- 48:48They're driving to Houston. Apparently.
- 48:52They were like, this is like a whole thing.
- 48:54This is a pit stop. And from the script, they, like,
- 48:57realize, Franklin points out. Like, oh, hey, this is the town
- 49:00where our grandpa's house is. They're like, OK, let's go
- 49:02visit. Yeah, and there there's a good
- 49:04reason that they stopped too, which we'll get to in a second.
- 49:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:09So it's August 18th, 1973. We see camera flashes and hands
- 49:13in various states of decay. We get that.
- 49:15Iconic. You know, I never noticed until
- 49:19paying attention this time, but that's actually the hitchhiker
- 49:22taking pictures of the body that he's taken out.
- 49:25That makes sense. Yeah, cuz he's got the camera
- 49:27there. Yeah.
- 49:29Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK, That makes sense.
- 49:32So we hear some radio stories and these were all so dark and
- 49:36grim. In reading some of the
- 49:37background on like what inspired this movie, I was like, it makes
- 49:40sense why like we're hearing so much like grossness on the
- 49:45radio. One of the big things that's
- 49:47being talked about right now is there's a Texas grave robber.
- 49:50And right now they're outside of Newt.
- 49:52And like some bodies have been displayed and really grotesque
- 49:55ways. And we actually see like the
- 49:57bodies like kind of on display one.
- 49:59Of the best opening shots. It's so cool.
- 50:01Like he's got, he basically did art with a corpse.
- 50:04He took a corpse and then like, got like a separate head.
- 50:08Yeah. And I put it in his lap and he's
- 50:09got him, like perched up on top of the tombstone.
- 50:12It's pretty impressive. Yeah, and they talk about like
- 50:14some of the bodies are just missing pieces.
- 50:16Some of them, the entire bodies are missing.
- 50:18And we also hear some other news stories as they continue
- 50:21driving, like there's a chemical plane explosion, somebody that
- 50:25committed suicide from jumping off the top of a building, a
- 50:28bridge claps so bad. Times in.
- 50:31Texas. Yeah, like Texas not doing so
- 50:33great. We see the van stop and they are
- 50:37setting up a ramp for Franklin. It's just two, two by fours, and
- 50:42he goes and pees in a coffee can and a truck blast by which
- 50:46distracts Kirk just long enough for Franklin to go rolling down
- 50:50the hill. Yeah, it's the wind blast that
- 50:51knocks him down there. Can I just say I appreciate the
- 50:54continuity and his if it was still down when he fell?
- 50:58Yeah, I appreciate that attention to detail.
- 51:02So good job, Toby. Yeah.
- 51:03That's the last thing that he shot.
- 51:05Is it? Yeah, cuz he like, apparently
- 51:07they were like they ran on money and they hadn't paid him.
- 51:11And he's like, look, I'm not gonna do this unless I get a
- 51:13check. So yeah.
- 51:14Like, well, they're asking him to do a stunt.
- 51:16Yeah, and he said like, that was my favorite scene because you
- 51:18can tell in that scene I had in my pocket a check for $5000.
- 51:24Nice. Yeah, Yeah.
- 51:27So they get back in the car and this is Pam's like reading some,
- 51:31like, astrology stuff. She says Saturn's in retrograde.
- 51:34I don't. I'm not woo woo enough to be
- 51:36able to tell you all all about this, which I'm sure is
- 51:38surprising to some of you listening that I'm not that
- 51:41particular brand of woo woo. But I know retrograde's not
- 51:45good. I don't really know either, I
- 51:48always took it as like stars a line type shit planets are in
- 51:51like a line. It's supposed to kind of like
- 51:54fuck with the energy if that's like your star sign or whatever.
- 51:59Like it's not like good for the mojo.
- 52:02They do stop at the graveyard where Grandpa Hardesty is buried
- 52:08cuz she like Sally wants to go check on him.
- 52:10And they're, they're dudes just like drinking at the graveyard.
- 52:14I assume that this is like a, like a neighborhood watch type
- 52:17thing that like they decided, hey, let's go hang out at the
- 52:20graveyard, make sure no one busts in.
- 52:22But also, since we're just sitting there all day and as hot
- 52:24as balls, I always drink. One of them is the grave keeper
- 52:27cuz he's the drunk one. There's like I've seen things, I
- 52:29know things happen here. You know, he's like being very
- 52:33much. What's the guy from Cabin in the
- 52:37Woods? Oh, the the Harbinger.
- 52:40Yeah, he's being a harbinger right here.
- 52:42Yeah. So Sally goes and she checks on
- 52:46the grave. And then Franklin was like, but
- 52:47how do you know? And she goes, no, like it
- 52:49doesn't look like it's been dug up.
- 52:52And he's like, how can you be sure though?
- 52:55So they feel like it's like stench that fills the air and
- 52:58like, what the fuck is that? And then Franklin turns out
- 53:00like, oh, that's the slaughterhouse.
- 53:02Our papaw used to work in there and.
- 53:05He doesn't say. Pat Paul, that's your
- 53:06Appalachian coming. Out.
- 53:07Yeah, they call him Grandpa. Yeah, so there.
- 53:12I just want to say I appreciate the fact that the major factory
- 53:18that we live near is the Jif peanut roasting factory.
- 53:21So that's what we get to smell, and it's great, yeah.
- 53:25Way better than dead cow. Yeah.
- 53:27No, no contests. So they see a hit tracker on the
- 53:31road and they pick him up. So I like this comment right
- 53:35here cuz it's almost kind of a warning.
- 53:37Franco's like, I think we just picked up Dracula and then later
- 53:41on we get them actually sucking blood from.
- 53:43Sally's finger, which? Is kind of.
- 53:44Cool yeah. So he says that his family's
- 53:48always been a ME he doesn't like cuz they've been talking about
- 53:52the sledgehammer versus the air gun and the air guns being used
- 53:55now it's supposed to be more humane and the hitchhikers like,
- 53:57no, I don't like it puts people out of work.
- 54:00And again, think about the context with which this movie
- 54:03was written. In films, we were in a major
- 54:05economic recession. So I can, I'm a vegan, so I've
- 54:11got complicated feelings on this, but I get what he's
- 54:14saying. Like drawing, you draw.
- 54:16Comparisons. It's basically like AI taking
- 54:18over jobs for people doing other things.
- 54:20Yeah, you know, like it's the same vein.
- 54:23Of the conversation it said AI isn't doing anything to make
- 54:27things better for anyone else other than like money hungry CE
- 54:32OS whereas like the air gun is more humane for the cows at
- 54:35least. I guess it's also just an
- 54:37efficiency thing. Yeah, yeah, either way.
- 54:40So he also starts showing them pictures of kills and stuff.
- 54:44Like, yeah, see, like, I was really good at it here.
- 54:46This is kind of my job actually. Even if Franklin are vibing,
- 54:50they're and Franklin is genuinely interested in these
- 54:53pictures and he's trying to show it.
- 54:55And Pam is like, I don't please stop.
- 54:59Like I don't want to hear about this.
- 55:00I don't want to look at this. It's yeah, it's I, I don't this
- 55:05guy, he he's so he comes out so strong out the gaze like, hey,
- 55:08thanks for picking me up. So you guys like killing things
- 55:10like here's some meat like I killed this here's.
- 55:12Pictures of meat I killed inside of the squirrel purse I made.
- 55:16Yeah, like, it's a little like he's got the, you know, how
- 55:21girls nowadays, instead of using a Fanny pack the way you're
- 55:24supposed to, they like, do it crossbody almost.
- 55:27He's got that foot meat out of a squirrel and it's like right up
- 55:30here on his bosom. So he's not even hard with
- 55:33Frankel? Yeah, until he goes over to
- 55:34Franklin and reaches and grabs his knife out.
- 55:36Yeah, cuz Franklin was using his tone off, but it was on his
- 55:40fingers this time. And he takes the knife and he
- 55:43just cuts his hands. Yeah.
- 55:44And I don't know what the fuck made him do this.
- 55:47This guy, they're just trying to make him seem deranged.
- 55:50Nobody else has ever wanted to see his slaughter photos the way
- 55:55Franklin has, and he was like, let's see what else we have in
- 55:57common. Blood Brothers.
- 55:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. He didn't even, he didn't feel
- 56:01like he needed to even ask though, because he like thought
- 56:04Franklin was. He's already on board.
- 56:05He's like, this is my blood brother.
- 56:06I liked the version of it last night in Wild 0 where it's like
- 56:11we're gonna touch backs of hands and you just blow this whistle
- 56:14if you're ever in danger, and that, that's a better version of
- 56:17it. It's a little bit more.
- 56:19Rock'n'roll. Yes, that's that's a word for.
- 56:24You ever get the chance to watch Wild 0?
- 56:26Highly recommend. It's fucking wild.
- 56:28Highly recommend. All right, so he did that and
- 56:31then he pulls out his camera and takes a picture of Franklin.
- 56:35I guess he's like, they did something crazy and wanted to
- 56:37get a picture of the reaction or something.
- 56:40I don't know. It's like the opposite of those,
- 56:43where it's like the photographer took a picture of these pets, of
- 56:47these dogs before and after, calling him a good boy or good
- 56:49girl. Yeah, it's like that, but it's
- 56:51like immediately after freaking him out, cutting my hand,
- 56:57scaring him. So he invites him over to
- 56:59dinner. Hard pass.
- 57:01Yeah. And then he's like, well, can
- 57:02you at least just drop me off at my house?
- 57:04It's right there. It's real close.
- 57:06And I'm like, well, if it's that close, then just walk like we're
- 57:09we're in a rush anyway. And then he says $2.00 for the
- 57:13photo. And Franklin's like, it's not
- 57:14even a good photo. So then he explodes it.
- 57:17And I'm not joking. He like sets it on some tinfoil
- 57:20drops like some like powder like from a bullet and lights it up.
- 57:25The original way you described that made me think of bacon
- 57:28Hunger Force because in that show things just explode.
- 57:30It's one of my favorite gags. Like I remember one time Shake
- 57:33took like meat wide, like took some money and threw at meat
- 57:36wide and just like kind of slowly like floats down and then
- 57:38just, it's so funny. So yeah, like he doesn't really
- 57:44take kindly to that whole thing. Expose his picture.
- 57:47And then he just grabs Franklin and starts cutting his arm.
- 57:49Well, he pulls out a straight razor from his own boot.
- 57:52Yeah. And he's like, look, I got a
- 57:53knife too. And then cuts Franklin's arm.
- 57:56They kick him out and then he starts to just bang up against
- 57:59the van and he starts to take his blood and he's trying to
- 58:02write something on the van but they drive off before he can
- 58:04finish. And as they're driving away,
- 58:07Pam's like, oh, Franklin, your horoscope says that you're going
- 58:10to meet strange people as you travel through the country, and
- 58:12it's going to be a bad day. Yeah, and then they read, like,
- 58:15the one for all of them. Like, yeah, so bad.
- 58:17Shit's just going to happen in general today, apparently.
- 58:20Yep. It's not going to be good.
- 58:21So they arrive at a gas station and a barbecue joint.
- 58:24Yeah. The cook approaches.
- 58:26Them listen in the South gas stations are multifunctional.
- 58:30That's how they should be. I don't know how much it is in
- 58:32the north but like having like bait shop, deli, gas station
- 58:38like. It's like all the convenience
- 58:41store is taken to the extreme there.
- 58:43I'm not talking about Bucky's either people, I'm talking about
- 58:47hand painted sign 3 miles from any other like institution.
- 58:53Picture of this place right here.
- 58:55And that's exactly what it is, 2 pumps included.
- 58:57It smells like worms like. So they ask for gas.
- 59:01No gas yeah. He says that the truck should be
- 59:03in either later today or tomorrow, but they can stick
- 59:05around and eat some BBQ if they want.
- 59:08They reluctantly go in there and get some barbecue, and then
- 59:12they're like, fuck it, let's just go to the Franklin House.
- 59:15And he asked. This is funny, he says.
- 59:17Do you know where the Franklin House is?
- 59:20Have you ever thought about this before?
- 59:21Does. That mean his name is Franklin.
- 59:22Franklin, Franklin. That has been asked before and
- 59:27there was a answer. I think it may have been from
- 59:30Toby Hooper or somebody involved in the production.
- 59:32Was that his grandpa was named like he's named after his
- 59:35grandpa? Yes, that's it.
- 59:37Yes. Well, that's my cousin pointed
- 59:39this out to me once when we were younger and I've never not been
- 59:41able to think about it because she said now they're called the
- 59:44Mario Brothers. And we know canonically first
- 59:48name Mario, first name Luigi, but when you use brothers, you
- 59:51always use the last name. So that means it's Mario Mario,
- 59:54Facto Mario Mario. Mario, Mario, Mario.
- 59:58Yep, and I've never, I've never not thought of that I'm.
- 1:00:01Not going to defend that that's their canonical name.
- 1:00:04Canonically, if. You ask me.
- 1:00:06Canonically, Franklin's name is Franklin.
- 1:00:09Hard to see Franklin. Yes, exactly.
- 1:00:13Franklin. Franklin for short.
- 1:00:14Franklin. Franklin, Yeah.
- 1:00:16So the cook warns them he's like, might not want to go over
- 1:00:20there, though. People don't really take too
- 1:00:21kindly to, you know, people coming over to their house.
- 1:00:23He's like, but it's my house. He's like, oh.
- 1:00:26It's the Franklin. Franklin.
- 1:00:27Franklin House got him. I'm Franklin.
- 1:00:31Why? Why did he warn him to?
- 1:00:34Did he want them to stay there so he could kidnap them?
- 1:00:36Or did he just not want them to go poking around over there?
- 1:00:40I think it was a little a little BI think he was like, if the gas
- 1:00:43doesn't come, then hey, I got a new BBQ for tomorrow and if the
- 1:00:47gas does come, then Leatherface is fine.
- 1:00:50Yeah, well, maybe. Maybe the hitchhiker was
- 1:00:53supposed to bring Leatherface by later.
- 1:00:55I don't know. We know he was supposed to be
- 1:00:56like babysitting or. Whatever.
- 1:00:57He gets lost in this movie. Like it's so funny because we
- 1:01:01see him then and then we see him towards the end of the movie and
- 1:01:03he's like walking down the road in the middle of the night and
- 1:01:06he was right there near his house already.
- 1:01:08Where the fuck did that guy go? He was obviously watching them
- 1:01:11in the Franklin house. He.
- 1:01:13He, you know, he could have. To as they're driving to
- 1:01:17Franklin, Franklin Manor, Franklin freaks out because he's
- 1:01:23like, this is blood on my knife. I I sounded like the mayor from
- 1:01:28it's a wonderful knife you. Kind of do it, yeah.
- 1:01:33No, he's like freaking. And I was like, is this blood?
- 1:01:36Is this blood and like? There's been blood exchanged
- 1:01:40here man, don't be so surprised. And also stop stabbing that van.
- 1:01:45Because this is when he was stabbed.
- 1:01:46He was like, please stop it. Fucking frankly.
- 1:01:49I thought about today because again, I helped my nephew in the
- 1:01:52potty and the stall had like a hole in it.
- 1:01:56He goes, oh, there's a heart. And I was like, yeah, buddy,
- 1:01:59there's that's a well, it's just like the the paper or the paint
- 1:02:03was peeling. Yeah, but it looked like
- 1:02:05somebody had like, no, this is first of all women's.
- 1:02:09He's little. He can be in the women's it.
- 1:02:10Doesn't matter. But like, yeah, no, there's like
- 1:02:13a chip in the paint and he's like, oh, there's a heart on the
- 1:02:16wall. I was like, sure, buddy.
- 1:02:18Yeah, OK, that's cute. Yeah, we'll pull out a heart.
- 1:02:20Yeah. All right, so they arrive at the
- 1:02:25Franklin house and. Franklin, Franklin Manor.
- 1:02:28Yes, and they are excited to go explore the place.
- 1:02:31But they look at the blood on the van outside, and they're
- 1:02:33like, that's creepy. All right, Anyway, let's go
- 1:02:36inside. And Franklin's just, like, still
- 1:02:38standing out there. There's a ball of spiders in the
- 1:02:42corner of one of the rooms. Yeah, I feel like they must have
- 1:02:45like, found this place and they saw that and they're like, get
- 1:02:47that on the film. Yeah, that's definitely gonna
- 1:02:49play here. It's really upsetting.
- 1:02:52No, I think their daddy long wax is.
- 1:02:54What? Yeah.
- 1:02:55Fuck dude. First day of moving into my
- 1:02:58apartment. Sorry to go on a tangy here, but
- 1:03:00like when we lived down in Richmond, I went going to
- 1:03:03college trying to like get out. My fucking door was swarmed with
- 1:03:07granddaddy along. Yeah.
- 1:03:09I was almost terrified to leave my house because like and I
- 1:03:13couldn't miss because it was first day of class.
- 1:03:15So if I miss, I would have been kicked out of class.
- 1:03:17I had to brave it, had to fight through some granddaddy's.
- 1:03:20You did good. It's it's fucking terrifying.
- 1:03:24So eventually, like Franklin's freaking out, he's mad, he's
- 1:03:26having his tantrum that he's not able to be a part of them and
- 1:03:29he's having difficulties getting around.
- 1:03:31And he makes it inside. And then Kirk and Pam are like,
- 1:03:34hey, where was the swimming hole that you mentioned?
- 1:03:36So he points them in the direction.
- 1:03:38And but he does that thing where, like, he's given them the
- 1:03:41answer, but he's not being clear that it's the answer because he
- 1:03:44is in a bad man. He goes, well, there used to be
- 1:03:46a path down between two sheds, I think.
- 1:03:48Yeah, between two sheds, maybe. And then Kaley, yeah.
- 1:03:54So they want to head out something, which I can't blame
- 1:03:56them. It's 100°.
- 1:03:56They look sweaty. And also they want a break from
- 1:03:59Franklin. And also they're probably just.
- 1:04:01They're probably gonna. Fuck yeah.
- 1:04:02They're probably gonna say they're two young hot people.
- 1:04:04Like, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:04:07So you can't even call it bumping uglies.
- 1:04:08They're both. Very.
- 1:04:09Attractive. Yeah, like they're bumping
- 1:04:11pretties. They as they're going, they hear
- 1:04:15a gas generator and this gets Kirk Exotic.
- 1:04:17He's like, cool. So we go up there, we ask them
- 1:04:20for some gas, I'll give him a couple of bucks and my guitar
- 1:04:22just as insurance that we're coming back with more gas.
- 1:04:25So we'll do that. We'll come back, I'll get my
- 1:04:27guitar back. We give him another couple bucks
- 1:04:29and we've repaid him for the gas, which I feel like is an
- 1:04:31overly complicated idea because if you're already paying for the
- 1:04:34gas, why are you bringing back extra gas?
- 1:04:37Yeah, Kirk isn't. He's pretty, OK.
- 1:04:42He's not the one to really formulate plants here.
- 1:04:44That's. True, that's true.
- 1:04:46That's. True.
- 1:04:47And like they so like they find the pool area.
- 1:04:51No pool. Yeah, it's just dirt.
- 1:04:53Dried up a long time ago, but then they hear that gas and
- 1:04:55then, yeah, they approach there, see a junkyard of all kinds of
- 1:04:58cars. That's yeah.
- 1:05:00Ominous, but they. Press on.
- 1:05:02If you're approaching an isolated house, especially in
- 1:05:08the South, that's already, we've talked so many times on the
- 1:05:10show, don't go into other people's homes.
- 1:05:12Just don't do it. Yeah, but especially don't do it
- 1:05:14in the South. But especially especially don't
- 1:05:16do it when they've got a car graveyard.
- 1:05:19Yeah, it's just bad signs. People red flags left and right,
- 1:05:23and they notice the generator. So like, oh, cool generator.
- 1:05:26So there's somebody here, They're using power.
- 1:05:28They go to the front door. Nobody answers when they first
- 1:05:31knock. Then Kirk looks down at the
- 1:05:34ground and he sees a human tooth it up and gives it to Pam, who
- 1:05:39flips out. Yeah.
- 1:05:41Understandably, yeah, it's gross and also the tooth has like a
- 1:05:43huge cavity in it. Yeah, it's not good.
- 1:05:46Yeah. And she goes over to like, sit
- 1:05:49on the swing while he continues to knock on the door.
- 1:05:51Because she's just like, she's like, I'll let him get this out
- 1:05:55of his system, but I don't want to be a part of this.
- 1:05:57And he decides he's going to go in.
- 1:05:58Yeah, because he knocks the door and one knock gets the door
- 1:06:01open. So he's like, all right, I'm
- 1:06:02coming in. He starts to walk in, walks
- 1:06:05through the hallway, and then he trips on like the little ramp
- 1:06:07thing at the back there and stumbles up towards the sliding
- 1:06:10door, and then Leatherface pops up and he's right there.
- 1:06:13Yeah, he's just there. Boom.
- 1:06:16And then Kirk twitches for a minute, and then Leatherface
- 1:06:19just slams that door shut. He gives him with a second hit.
- 1:06:22Yeah, like finish him off. Oh my God, it's the most
- 1:06:24effective intro to a horror villain ever.
- 1:06:27It is. It's so fast and it's so.
- 1:06:30Impactful. That's the thing, Yeah.
- 1:06:31It catches you off guard because you're not expecting that.
- 1:06:34And then it's just over with like that and you're like, what
- 1:06:37the fuck? Did I just watch?
- 1:06:38What happened? And Pam goes in.
- 1:06:41And this is the thing with Pam. I'll talk about it in a second.
- 1:06:46I probably should have included it in my absurd, but I forgot
- 1:06:49about it until just now. Yes.
- 1:06:50So she goes in and she's looking around for Kirk, which at this
- 1:06:53point that door is shut, so she doesn't look in the red hallway.
- 1:06:57She stumbles into a room that's just covered in chicken feathers
- 1:07:01and bones. Yeah, and I don't know, cuz this
- 1:07:05happens a couple of times with her where she stares around in
- 1:07:09horror for like 45 seconds before she makes a sound.
- 1:07:14Yeah. And I can't tell if it's like a
- 1:07:16direction, like, OK, we need to get establishing shots and then
- 1:07:19you can freak out. We just don't want you screaming
- 1:07:20into your mic the whole time. Or if it's just like Pam has
- 1:07:25delayed responses because she does that later when she pops
- 1:07:27out from the freezer and it's like a pop out and the person is
- 1:07:30like, Oh my goodness. And then she goes.
- 1:07:33That right there. OK, so the first .1 I think that
- 1:07:39they she's slowly realizing what it is.
- 1:07:43It takes a minute for it to set in for her.
- 1:07:46And the second I fall into a pile of feathers, I'm freaking
- 1:07:48out. Nobody expects that.
- 1:07:50Ever. She's pretty OK, so give her a
- 1:07:55grace period to adjust. Here.
- 1:07:57All right. And second, I think, but that
- 1:08:00one scene I thought she was dead.
- 1:08:04I know cuz she pops up. I know, but.
- 1:08:07And she was like banging on the inside of it first, but she.
- 1:08:10Wasn't she's not reacting cuz when he opens up the thing she's
- 1:08:14just laying there with her arms together and she's wifeless.
- 1:08:19Listen, I don't know what to tell you.
- 1:08:20I delayed reaction Pam. Even after death, yeah.
- 1:08:27So yeah, she she eventually she stumbles out of the chicken room
- 1:08:30and Leatherface grabs her and puts her on a meat hook and then
- 1:08:33just chops up Kirk in front of her.
- 1:08:36And then he needs to go take a minute.
- 1:08:39He's just had two intruders in his home.
- 1:08:41Oh wait, he's this. Isn't the part where he freaks
- 1:08:43out? Yeah, that's when Jerry comes
- 1:08:45in. OK.
- 1:08:46Right here we just cut after. He's like, sorry, sorry.
- 1:08:48Yeah, yeah, you're right. We cut to Jerry teasing
- 1:08:51Franklin. He's like, yeah, no, the
- 1:08:53hitchhiker is coming and get you.
- 1:08:54And he was like, no, seriously, Do you think he goes?
- 1:08:56Yeah, Franklin, I gave him your address.
- 1:09:00Dude, I like Jerry. He's, he's just like the kind of
- 1:09:03guy that just like, he kind of stirs the pot.
- 1:09:05I feel like Jerry and Sally have probably also been together long
- 1:09:08enough that Jerry has gotten enough of a dose of Franklin and
- 1:09:11he knows exactly how to talk. To him, yeah, yeah, he.
- 1:09:15Yep. He's like, he's like, I'm not
- 1:09:16like, you're basically a brother at this point and he's.
- 1:09:18Got to wean into, yeah, you can't even take Franklin
- 1:09:21seriously. You just got to like fuck with
- 1:09:22him. So he's like, OK, like I'm going
- 1:09:24to go check on Kirk and Pam and then Sally's like, can I come
- 1:09:29with you? He's like, no, you got to stay
- 1:09:31with Franklin. I need him.
- 1:09:33He's like so quick. She's like no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:09:36Yeah, well cuz he knew that if Sally came that Franklin would
- 1:09:38insist on coming. Here.
- 1:09:40Yeah, cuz he's freaked out. Yeah, he knows Franklin.
- 1:09:42Yeah, and so Sally's just like she's tired and she's frustrated
- 1:09:45and she doesn't want to be alone with Franklin anymore either,
- 1:09:48like. She's like, I gotta.
- 1:09:51And like she is, she is exercising all kinds of patience
- 1:09:54and restraint. Like, considering the fact that
- 1:09:57they've got to be agitated, they don't have gas, it's overly hot,
- 1:10:01and Franklin has just been whining non-stop.
- 1:10:04This is one of those parts because like, we stay with him
- 1:10:07for a little bit and he's just there.
- 1:10:08He's like, Sally, do you think they're ever going to come back?
- 1:10:11Sally, Sally. And he's like, what is it?
- 1:10:13Franklin's like how? Nothing.
- 1:10:16That's the worst. That's the fucking worst one.
- 1:10:21Cuz like he senses he overstepped and she goes no
- 1:10:24Franklin, I'm just tired. And she starts to try to walk
- 1:10:27away and goes, Sally, where are you going?
- 1:10:28Wait, wait, Sally. Sally.
- 1:10:33God, man, he, he is a whole lot. He is, He is.
- 1:10:38So like I said, two truths can exist at I also.
- 1:10:42Like how they also like separately away from them, they
- 1:10:45kind of take jabs at Franklin. They're like, how did Franklin
- 1:10:48get down here? When they're at the pond?
- 1:10:49It's like, I don't know. They must have carried him when
- 1:10:51he was little. And Curt's like Franklin never
- 1:10:52was. So Jerry, he's walking along, he
- 1:10:59stumbles, and we're getting some sunset now.
- 1:11:01So the day has passed and he makes it to the house when it's
- 1:11:04like the golden hour. Yeah, he gets in there and he's
- 1:11:08looking around. He finds the the meat hook.
- 1:11:11It's no longer got Pam on it, but it's got Pam's blood.
- 1:11:15Kirk has been cleared off the table as well, so he's kind of
- 1:11:18looking around. Then he hears a banging inside
- 1:11:19of the freezer and that's when he opens it up.
- 1:11:24Pam is in there. Yeah.
- 1:11:25And then Leatherface comes in and just hits him a couple of
- 1:11:27times. So this whole thing, they kept
- 1:11:31him hidden so they wouldn't know what he looked like, OK?
- 1:11:34And they wanted genuine reactions.
- 1:11:36Had they met Gunnar Hanson at all yet?
- 1:11:37Do you know? I don't think so because he's a
- 1:11:41big. Dude, that would be like that
- 1:11:43alone, like the size and then also you see the mask he's
- 1:11:46wearing. Believe it or not, he wasn't
- 1:11:48even the first pig. Really.
- 1:11:49Yeah, they had a guy and then like Toby Hooper, like saw him.
- 1:11:54He's like, dude, you would have been great for a killer, but we
- 1:11:56already got a guy. But apparently, whenever he came
- 1:11:58to shooting, the guy that was originally Weather Face got
- 1:12:01drunk and, like, refused to leave his motel.
- 1:12:06So they're like, we need you bad.
- 1:12:08So yeah, that's how we got Gunner.
- 1:12:10Wow. But yeah, apparently, like,
- 1:12:12during this scene here, there's a guy below Jerry there.
- 1:12:17He's supposed to, like, grab his waist and pull him that way he
- 1:12:21knows when to react to Leatherface.
- 1:12:22And they're like, you know, stumble back.
- 1:12:25But apparently like he was so freaked out by looking at him at
- 1:12:27this part that he actually like ran out of the house and ruined.
- 1:12:31The shot. Which I would be too.
- 1:12:33It's so fucking freaky. And then yeah, he like bashes
- 1:12:36Jerry. And then this is when he has his
- 1:12:38little freak out. He's like where the fuck are
- 1:12:39these people coming from? He doesn't.
- 1:12:41I wouldn't even call it a freak out.
- 1:12:42This is like almost a moment of like existential dread because
- 1:12:46he like he does, he does the deed and he goes and he sits in
- 1:12:49the room. He's got his little rocking
- 1:12:51chair is angled towards the window.
- 1:12:54And he just kind of like puts his head in his hands and he
- 1:12:57looks so sad. But then he does almost like a
- 1:13:01Florence Pugh as May queen. We're like, he's upset.
- 1:13:06And then he kind of like, has a little smile on his teeth.
- 1:13:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, so it is night time
- 1:13:15and Sally is getting worried so she is wanting to go check on
- 1:13:20Jerry. But Frank was like, look, let's
- 1:13:23just go and like we'll come back for them.
- 1:13:26I don't know Franklin more his character here.
- 1:13:30He's he's willing to leave a man, but yeah, he doesn't care.
- 1:13:33Yeah, well, and like also he's like, well, let's just give it
- 1:13:35another minute. And he's like, let me honk the
- 1:13:38horn, Jerry. He likes to say they're knocking
- 1:13:43with Y. Yeah, because he can really,
- 1:13:45like lay on. Yeah, you know, he couldn't have
- 1:13:47gone pain. Pain.
- 1:13:50Yeah, he's like, that doesn't have a ring to it, does it?
- 1:13:53So like, he gets into the driver's seat and he freaks out
- 1:13:56because they took the keys. Jerry took the keys.
- 1:13:59So Sally's like, OK, I'm going to go give me the flashlight.
- 1:14:03And Franklin will not give her the flashlight.
- 1:14:05And then finally she's because he's like, I'll go with you and
- 1:14:07she's like, I can't push you. He's like, it's fine, I'll push
- 1:14:12myself. And she's like about to just
- 1:14:15walk and he's like forcing himself to come along.
- 1:14:17And guess who's pushing him by the time they get to the dried
- 1:14:21up stream? Yep.
- 1:14:22Sally has to push him, yeah. They cut through a certain point
- 1:14:28and then this whole thing right here.
- 1:14:31I just want to point out the way Sally shouts Jerry.
- 1:14:35I like it 'cause it like she gets throaty on part of it.
- 1:14:38She's like Jerry have. You ever heard of the the
- 1:14:44husband calling competition where it's like, it's like a
- 1:14:51bunch of like women usually from the South and it's done at like
- 1:14:56talent festivals where like they'll like call their name
- 1:14:59like Harold, basically. And this is kind of like like
- 1:15:03Sally would have been a shoot in for it.
- 1:15:04Yeah. Yeah, see that?
- 1:15:07This is my favorite shot of the movie.
- 1:15:10This whole thing, like mostly the shot before Weatherface pops
- 1:15:14out, but the way that the trees are there and the way with the
- 1:15:18lighting and the flashlight, it almost looks like it's painted.
- 1:15:22I feel like I'm looking at an animation cell, OK?
- 1:15:27Like it looks really, really cool.
- 1:15:29The colors like the purple trees and stuff like that.
- 1:15:32I don't know. I feel like they really, really
- 1:15:33captured a really cool scene here.
- 1:15:36But they're like, yeah, they're going down the forest.
- 1:15:39They're yelling for Jerry. And then Franklin was like, wait
- 1:15:41a minute, I hear something. And Sally keeps like, shushing
- 1:15:44and brushing him off. And then he says he's like, no
- 1:15:47Sally, really. There's something out there.
- 1:15:49And then right as soon as he finishes that Leatherface just
- 1:15:52pops out starts chainsaw on Franklin.
- 1:15:55Yep, and it is one of the best jump scares.
- 1:15:57It's yeah, it's really effective.
- 1:15:59Like I know it's coming, but every single time he gets me.
- 1:16:02It's so good, yeah. And so Sally goes running and
- 1:16:05she eventually makes her way into the house and that's where
- 1:16:08when she runs it, she closes the front door, locks it, and that
- 1:16:12isn't going to stop a man with a chainsaw for long, but it's
- 1:16:15enough for her to get upstairs and find essentially 2 mummies
- 1:16:19open A room. Yeah, one of them living,
- 1:16:21surprisingly, Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:23And she's, like, asking them for help.
- 1:16:24Like, come on, man, they're not gonna do anything.
- 1:16:26I mean, one of those looks like Missus Bates, you know what I
- 1:16:30mean? It's a skeleton.
- 1:16:31Basically, yeah. So she starts to run back
- 1:16:33downstairs, but this is where Leatherface is like already like
- 1:16:37mowed down the door. I like his reaction because he
- 1:16:39looks up there and he jumps himself to.
- 1:16:42Go. He wasn't prepared to see her,
- 1:16:43like, coming back down the stairs, like, yeah.
- 1:16:45And so she turns right back around, runs, and she jumps
- 1:16:49through one of the Windows 0. My God, yeah.
- 1:16:51And then he's just like looking down like, why the fuck did you
- 1:16:54do that? Yeah, he's like, I don't like,
- 1:16:56I'm not gonna do that. Like, I just get out of my
- 1:16:59house. Like, you know, that's all you
- 1:17:01had to do was not be in my house.
- 1:17:03She runs. She hits a tree as she's
- 1:17:05running. And so he almost catches up to
- 1:17:08her, but she gets up, runs, and she gets to the gas.
- 1:17:11She gets to the gas station. Yep and then like she makes it
- 1:17:14in and he just doesn't follow. Yeah, and she, she doesn't
- 1:17:18really question it too much. She's just telling the owner.
- 1:17:20She's like, hey, we got to we got to call the police.
- 1:17:22We got to call the police. Franklin's dead.
- 1:17:24I don't know who else is dead, but we got to get the police.
- 1:17:26And he's like, well, we don't have a phone here.
- 1:17:28I have to get my truck and we'll have to drive to Childress.
- 1:17:32It's OK, it's OK. Let me go get the truck.
- 1:17:35And she's sitting there and she's watching the barbecue and
- 1:17:38I was trying real hard to see what was in the BBQ too.
- 1:17:42She looked like she noticed something there and I couldn't
- 1:17:44tell. Did she see like people body
- 1:17:47parts? I didn't see people, but I don't
- 1:17:49know what barbecue in a BBQ pit looks like.
- 1:17:52As you remember, I'm famously vegan.
- 1:17:55It looks like me. Yeah, like, I don't, I don't
- 1:17:57know. I don't know what's what it's
- 1:18:00supposed to look like versus what I should be looking like
- 1:18:02for human. It didn't, OK, It didn't jump
- 1:18:05out to me. Nothing looked out of the
- 1:18:07ordinary to me. But then again, I could have
- 1:18:10missed something too. But it looked like she noticed
- 1:18:12something there. But then he comes back, old man,
- 1:18:15cook, owner, whatever you want to call cook, He's got a gunny
- 1:18:18sack. Yes.
- 1:18:19And she knows immediately. And she started screaming.
- 1:18:22She's trying to fight him. She's not going down without a
- 1:18:25fight. And this is where Sally, like,
- 1:18:26really gets me. Like, yeah, because she is.
- 1:18:30She's been through it. She just ran 2 miles.
- 1:18:34She is. She's wild.
- 1:18:37She's got a knife too. She picks up the blade.
- 1:18:40And then because I, I always forget because I'm always like,
- 1:18:43why did he attack her with a broom?
- 1:18:45That that's an interesting weapon choice, But I remember he
- 1:18:48just grabbed the broom because he needed something to sneak it
- 1:18:51out of her. Hand.
- 1:18:52Yeah, he's just like, yeah, he's just hitting her with a broom.
- 1:18:54It feels very much. It gives me the same vibes as
- 1:18:57like when Angela is shoving the cheerleader down into the the
- 1:19:03portafotty with the stick and she's like.
- 1:19:05Whack, whack. It looks silly, right?
- 1:19:07Yeah. It doesn't look like it should
- 1:19:09hurt, but it like, knocks her out.
- 1:19:10And like the Cook's actor, I can't remember his name.
- 1:19:15Jim Sitow. Apparently he was pulling his
- 1:19:17like hits with this and like it was looking even more fake than
- 1:19:20this. So they're like, no, you have to
- 1:19:22actually like hit her. So this actually like bruised
- 1:19:24her up. Poor Marilyn.
- 1:19:26She had like black eyes from this.
- 1:19:27She went through it with. She did.
- 1:19:31So yeah, they they get her stacked up and tied.
- 1:19:34Up. She had also just run into a
- 1:19:35tree too, so it's probably a little bit easier to knock her
- 1:19:37out. That's true.
- 1:19:38Yeah, that's true. She's been through a while here,
- 1:19:40so he's got her tied up in the truck they're driving off.
- 1:19:44He's like poking at her as they're driving the truck.
- 1:19:47He's kind of having a good time. Mean.
- 1:19:48Yeah, like I'm just going poking more.
- 1:19:51And then for a minute I was like, why does she live and the
- 1:19:54rest die so quickly? And then we learned that the
- 1:19:57hitchhiker is also part of the family.
- 1:19:59He's Leatherface's brother. He was supposed to be there
- 1:20:01babysitting. I'm so in not babysitting but.
- 1:20:05Their whole dynamic is weird. I think they're all brothers.
- 1:20:08Yeah, yeah. Which is weird because the cook
- 1:20:10is older. He's a lot older, but it could
- 1:20:13just be one of those like. We've seen.
- 1:20:16Sometimes there are AG apps like.
- 1:20:18That we've seen the grandpa here, the grandpa's like a
- 1:20:20century older than all. Yeah.
- 1:20:23Grandpa is Nosferatu. Yeah, well, count Warlock.
- 1:20:27OK. Well, I just I did a bad thing.
- 1:20:32OK, so he he stumbles upon the hitch tracker and the hitchhiker
- 1:20:38is kind of giving him shit, and then he's giving the hitchhiker
- 1:20:41shit because apparently he was supposed to show up and help
- 1:20:44with the whole situation. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:46And he wasn't supposed to leave the brother alone.
- 1:20:48He almost got caught as being the new grave robber.
- 1:20:52And yeah, so now, like, they don't know if all of these
- 1:20:55teenagers got caught or not. So when they go inside, they do
- 1:20:57their Three stooges act between the three of them.
- 1:21:00And you know, he's really kind of girl on leather faces.
- 1:21:04Like, did you get all of them? Do you know if you got all of
- 1:21:06them? Leatherface now has like a
- 1:21:08grandma. Yeah, he's got the grandma fro.
- 1:21:11Yeah, well, it's, it's a nice black though.
- 1:21:13Like it's not white like. No, this is white.
- 1:21:16Black is the Pretty Woman face. He changes again.
- 1:21:18After this and now he's got the. The grandma look, because he's
- 1:21:21got like the apron on, like the it's different from the apron he
- 1:21:26was wearing before. He's changed his look up a
- 1:21:27little bit here. And yeah, he's scolding the
- 1:21:29leather face because he ruin the door and then I feel bad for
- 1:21:33Leatherface a little bit here. Honestly, like I kind of feel
- 1:21:37bad for Leatherface throughout all of it.
- 1:21:40Yeah, I mean, like, honestly, a tragic character.
- 1:21:43It's nature versus nurture. And he got, he didn't get
- 1:21:46nurture, you know? They tie Sally up.
- 1:21:51And then they got to go get Grandpa.
- 1:21:54And then this is where they give him some blood to suck.
- 1:21:57He does this like happy. Hungry Girl pants.
- 1:22:00And the grandpa, they say that grandpa's the best.
- 1:22:03So like they do their whole dinner thing.
- 1:22:04Sally's screaming. We we have like 5 minutes of
- 1:22:07just them just like laughing, screaming, crying, whatever.
- 1:22:10It's interesting because like, I like the little, like, power
- 1:22:12dynamic here between the hitchhiker and the cook because
- 1:22:15he's like, yeah, like the hitchhiker, he's like sliding
- 1:22:18over to Sally and like kind of giving her the one.
- 1:22:20And I was like, he doesn't do anything.
- 1:22:22Me and Leatherface, we're the ones that actually do shit
- 1:22:24around here. He just cooks and then.
- 1:22:26He's like never had the stomach for murder.
- 1:22:28Yeah, he's like, I just can't do it.
- 1:22:30And then he's like, OK, well, we gotta go take care of her.
- 1:22:33And the hitchhiker's like, well, no, I had an idea, let's let
- 1:22:37Grandpa have some fun. And I say that he's the best.
- 1:22:41Callum and Win Blow. Yeah, and he used to.
- 1:22:44One time he set the record, he did 60 and 5 minutes.
- 1:22:47Would have done faster if the hook and pull got the beeves out
- 1:22:53of the way faster. Is that an acceptable plural of
- 1:22:57beef? Beeves.
- 1:22:58Beeves it's it was on the captions.
- 1:23:02I noticed that I didn't know that that was.
- 1:23:03I didn't I? My mind didn't jump to that
- 1:23:06being, but that was. It's the only thing that it
- 1:23:08could possibly make sense. I thought it was, well, I
- 1:23:10thought it could have been some kind of slaughterhouse
- 1:23:12terminology that neither of us are familiar with.
- 1:23:14I'm. Gonna look it up, I'm gonna
- 1:23:16Google. It right now we're here.
- 1:23:17Yeah, let's do this. And dip in the toe.
- 1:23:20Yes, it is in fact the plural of beef, the flesh of a cow, bull
- 1:23:24or ox used as food. These motherfuckers are
- 1:23:26cultured. Well, they just know their
- 1:23:29industry vocabulary. Yeah, I'm, I'm impressed.
- 1:23:32They taught us all right, So they get like a little blood
- 1:23:35bucket and they get grandpa there and they like just drag
- 1:23:39Sally and hang her over the bucket and they're just handing
- 1:23:42him the sledgehammer he just keeps.
- 1:23:44Way too much faith in him because they don't have her very
- 1:23:48well secured because they're like grandpa will get her in one
- 1:23:50hit and we got like seven hits and only one has actually made
- 1:23:53connections. He's not even like they're like
- 1:23:55Weatherface is picking up his arm and doing it all for him,
- 1:23:58but like letting him like letting go.
- 1:23:59So like he has like the. Momentum.
- 1:24:01Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's just it's not worth.
- 1:24:04But like, it does eventually hit Sally at one point and kind of
- 1:24:07daze her, but she takes a moment and she frees.
- 1:24:10Herself. Yeah.
- 1:24:11When she's dazed, the old man kind of loosens his grip on her,
- 1:24:15and then she gets free. She jumps through another
- 1:24:18window. Yeah, that's just her thing.
- 1:24:19Yeah, like we've established that the door is cut all the
- 1:24:23shit, it doesn't function as a door anymore.
- 1:24:25It's a hole in the wall. Could have run through that.
- 1:24:27No, we're going through another. One.
- 1:24:28It's impressive how little she cuts herself doing this though.
- 1:24:31Yeah, this is one of those that like it was very, very obvious
- 1:24:34that it was fake glass half a moment, which I mean, yes, it
- 1:24:39should be. But yeah, sugar glass, it's just
- 1:24:42one of those. It was like, wow, this really
- 1:24:43doesn't look like glass right now.
- 1:24:45Yeah, and she's running down their long driveway.
- 1:24:48Hitchhiker is following her with his little switchblade.
- 1:24:51Or not switchblade that razor. Blade.
- 1:24:53Yeah, the little straight razor. Cutting her up as she's running.
- 1:24:56Yeah. And then she runs through the
- 1:24:57middle of a road and an 18 Wheeler is coming by and
- 1:25:01hitchhiker freezes. Yeah.
- 1:25:03And he he freezes in the middle of the road and he gets like
- 1:25:06tore up under nine of those 18 wheels.
- 1:25:09Yep, Yep. And then?
- 1:25:12Poor poor truck driver. This guy went through it.
- 1:25:14He accidentally killed a man and then he like, is trying to help.
- 1:25:17Somebody. Yeah.
- 1:25:18He sees this crazed, bloody woman trying to climb up in his
- 1:25:21driver's side. He's like, yeah, no, for sure,
- 1:25:22come here. And then Leatherface comes and
- 1:25:25he's like, OK, let's go out this door.
- 1:25:26They go out the passenger door. They start running.
- 1:25:29Leatherface is chasing him. He turns around.
- 1:25:32Why does he have a wrench in his hand?
- 1:25:33Nobody knows. He grabbed it, He grabbed it.
- 1:25:34There's a shot of it and he was in like the cab of his truck
- 1:25:37there. Why?
- 1:25:39Dude, when you're on the road, you kind of need shit.
- 1:25:43A lot of people live in those trucks for a while, so they
- 1:25:45keep, like, supplies like that. Like, you need to, like, fix
- 1:25:47your truck. Yeah.
- 1:25:48I've got a wrench set in my car. It's not in my passenger seat
- 1:25:52and the wrench is not loose. Well, I guess you're more
- 1:25:54organized and you're more prone to being killed by weather
- 1:25:56facing this scenario. Damn, I'm sorry, you need to
- 1:26:00run. I can't.
- 1:26:01Argue I can't argue with. That wrench, yeah.
- 1:26:03So he takes it, throws to that leather face, hits it right
- 1:26:06square in the face. Which makes him fall backwards
- 1:26:10and when he falls he drops his chainsaw and the chainsaw falls
- 1:26:12onto his leg. So that pisses him off.
- 1:26:17And then a pickup truck drops by and this guy's like, what?
- 1:26:23And she just climbs into the bed of the truck.
- 1:26:26She's like, go, go. Yeah, what entire nation?
- 1:26:28I like how like the the truck driver doesn't even get
- 1:26:31considered, he just keeps and he doesn't even consider getting in
- 1:26:35the bed of this truck. He just keeps running.
- 1:26:36Well and that's why like cuz I was taking notes and I thought
- 1:26:38maybe I missed where he died or something.
- 1:26:41And you're like, no, he's just still running.
- 1:26:42Yeah, we see him just continue to run down the road.
- 1:26:45He just doesn't give a fuck. And Sally can barely make it
- 1:26:48into the bed of the truck, and Weatherface is, like, limping
- 1:26:51right behind her, and she gets in just in the nick of time.
- 1:26:55And this causes Weatherface to do his Weatherface dance.
- 1:26:59Yeah, it's chainsaw dance, which is beautiful.
- 1:27:02One of the best endings, too. I love how it's just kind of
- 1:27:04abrupt and crazy there, just like this movie was, you know?
- 1:27:07It was very fitting. Man, it's you guys.
- 1:27:11It's only going to get Wilder from here.
- 1:27:13With the exception of one. 2 is we're getting you thought they
- 1:27:19ramped up the camp with child's play.
- 1:27:22They ramp it up hard after this one.
- 1:27:25Good Lord. Yeah, that's how it ends.
- 1:27:29Yeah, OK. So keep in mind that's in.
- 1:27:32OK, I think I will bump mine up to 9.75.
- 1:27:35OK, so that gives us a 9.875. OK.
- 1:27:44I think, yeah, really it would just be like that pacing right
- 1:27:47there at the end. Yeah, I can get it.
- 1:27:50It holds it back its head. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:52I mean, like the I, we set the tone for the derangement of the
- 1:27:56dinner scene and like, I get that.
- 1:27:57But like the tone was set in the first like 30 seconds.
- 1:28:01You know what? I.
- 1:28:01Mean yeah, we didn't need yeah as much as we did.
- 1:28:03It didn't need a dragon. If you're gonna do that, like
- 1:28:06have some variety and shit happening, you know, because
- 1:28:09it's just that. OK, Talia, throughout this
- 1:28:16movie, she was, she was very needy.
- 1:28:18Yeah, she was very needy. She wanted attention throughout
- 1:28:21the whole beginning. And then once the death started,
- 1:28:25We've referred to her smut wall before.
- 1:28:27This time we called it her scare Barrier, AKA The Scarier.
- 1:28:30Scarier, yeah. So she she was very frightened
- 1:28:33by this movie. It was a very effective movie
- 1:28:34for her. So I think she would give this,
- 1:28:38I think she would give it a nine.
- 1:28:40Yeah, OK, yeah, she a car trip gone wrong.
- 1:28:47Yeah, it works for her. I think that would.
- 1:28:48Yeah, it would work for her. But also it kind of makes her
- 1:28:51sad about car trips. Yeah.
- 1:28:53So Zoe. 'S ultimate warrior.
- 1:28:55Zoe's ultimate warrior. Man, I hate to say it.
- 1:28:59Leatherface do we give the role for that?
- 1:29:02This too. We can't say Leatherface for
- 1:29:03every single. One, we can't say Leatherface
- 1:29:05for every single one of them. But here's the thing.
- 1:29:08Is it Leatherface or is it the Hitchhiker?
- 1:29:12Or it could be the cook because he loves to eat.
- 1:29:14Also that, but no Zoe has a stomach for killing.
- 1:29:17She likes to chew on people. Exactly.
- 1:29:20Yeah, but she has the stomach for killing.
- 1:29:22That's true. She does, yeah.
- 1:29:23She can kill. She kills all the bugs in her
- 1:29:25house. So I think, I think it's the
- 1:29:28hitchhiker honestly, cuz like when she's hungry, she's real
- 1:29:32talkative. That's.
- 1:29:34True, she will just reach out and she'll she'll bite you.
- 1:29:37She's trying to cut you and I think if she had a camera she
- 1:29:41would take a picture and try and charge us money.
- 1:29:44No, I think you're right, if we were to map out the dynamic
- 1:29:47between the three of them out there, between the three of
- 1:29:48those characters, Zoe said. Tracker Scouts.
- 1:29:51The code man, yeah. And stop calling him old man.
- 1:29:54It's the. Cook.
- 1:29:55That's what he's listed as. That it's just false.
- 1:30:00It's just false. It's the cook.
- 1:30:02OK, I will accept no less. And Talia obviously led the face
- 1:30:07because she's the biggest. And she's going to protect.
- 1:30:09The house, Yeah. And she has multiple
- 1:30:12personalities with outfits. I guess I don't.
- 1:30:15Know she builds her smut wall and her scariers so she can
- 1:30:19build furniture. Yeah, OK.
- 1:30:22Yeah. All right.
- 1:30:23So all right, we got that now. Who did you relate to?
- 1:30:29Who did I relate to? I I think I related to Jerry
- 1:30:36because of the whole fucking with people type thing.
- 1:30:38I like to like, yeah, I like to do that.
- 1:30:41Like if it's like, if I find like a fun target to do that to
- 1:30:44not like malicious or anything, but it's fun to just like I'll
- 1:30:48do it to you. Sometimes, you know, I'll fuck
- 1:30:49with you, but it's fun. It's fun to toy with people like
- 1:30:52that. OK, I feel like I probably.
- 1:31:03I mean, I probably relate to Sally because I'm also a
- 1:31:06Capricorn and I also sometimes get real frustrated and I have
- 1:31:12to say I'm just tired. That's true.
- 1:31:15Yeah, I was gonna say. And this is one that we both
- 1:31:17also relate to, so it's no jabs but Franklin for having to stop
- 1:31:22and pee so often. Also that, yeah, yeah, that's,
- 1:31:26that's very real. OK.
- 1:31:29Well, those are all good right there.
- 1:31:31They're solid. All right, so no dream sequel,
- 1:31:36but we can do a label for this one.
- 1:31:38Yeah, We decided because we don't do dream sequels for our
- 1:31:41franchise movies that that's a little bit that we do for most
- 1:31:45of our movies that we cover. But when we do our franchise
- 1:31:48movies, we don't do a dream sequel.
- 1:31:50We because we know we're going to be going through all of them.
- 1:31:53We don't want to put ourselves in a position where we have to
- 1:31:56try and out think what the next one is.
- 1:31:59Instead, for this one, because I have such a hard time
- 1:32:01remembering which movie is which, we decided that we're
- 1:32:04going to come up with a label, nickname, whatever, to help me
- 1:32:08parse this out. So that way when we're all is
- 1:32:11said and done and we can go back to watching these casually more
- 1:32:14easily. Travis has a handy Rolodex.
- 1:32:17And then this can also help other people that have a hard
- 1:32:20time differentiating these movies as well.
- 1:32:22Yeah. So if you're struggling the
- 1:32:25first one, I think it's the obvious most fitting OG.
- 1:32:28Yeah, the classic. We'll call this the OG Texas
- 1:32:31Chainsaw here. That's the easiest to drill in.
- 1:32:34You know it, yeah. OK, that one is easy.
- 1:32:37Yeah, we'll get there. I've already got ideas for some
- 1:32:40of these other ones, what they call them.
- 1:32:41Yeah, yeah, I've got the ones that I already call them certain
- 1:32:47things, so that'll be easy. Like we've got do your thing cuz
- 1:32:51that's exclusively how I refer to that movie.
- 1:32:53I couldn't tell you the name of that movie right now if you
- 1:32:54asked me to. Seriously, it's got Texas and
- 1:32:56Chainsaw in it. You just said it, Texas Chainsaw
- 1:33:023D. You gotta have the 3D too.
- 1:33:04Also, I mean 3D isn't the easy one to distinguish.
- 1:33:07Nope, because I don't think of it as a 3D movie that doesn't.
- 1:33:10That's not effective for me. You've tried that before,
- 1:33:12remember? And I've been like, which one is
- 1:33:13that? That's.
- 1:33:14True. OK, OK.
- 1:33:16All right, tagline. Tagline this is This is tricky
- 1:33:20because they get a lot of really good ones.
- 1:33:21They got some of the most classic taglines.
- 1:33:30Put on your brave face. That's a good one.
- 1:33:36You'll need your brave face. You'll need to bring your brave
- 1:33:39face. Face your fears.
- 1:33:42Whoo, that's good. Yeah.
- 1:33:45All right. There we go.
- 1:33:47Man, that was easy. Yes.
- 1:33:49OK, cool. We have to avoid face puns, for
- 1:33:52we can't do that for all of them.
- 1:33:53But yeah, OK, sometimes it's a little too easy.
- 1:33:58Yeah, it's true. All right, I guess that means
- 1:34:01it's time for reviews. Yeah.
- 1:34:03Yeah. OK.
- 1:34:04All right. I pulled an IMDb review.
- 1:34:09Let me see. Let me pull it up.
- 1:34:11OK. This is a one out of 10 on IMDb.
- 1:34:15It's a user review and this was from 2004.
- 1:34:18OK. OK, honestly, I thought it was a
- 1:34:22joke. I don't think this was seriously
- 1:34:25the movie everyone raved about. It's terrible.
- 1:34:27I mean, it's really, really bad. How on earth anybody could enjoy
- 1:34:31this film is far beyond my vast, vast, incredibly vast
- 1:34:34understanding. OK.
- 1:34:35Damn, you got big brain. Big, big vast, vast brain.
- 1:34:39It's so, it's so bad. Vast understanding, but it's so
- 1:34:43bad you cannot even laugh at it. First of all, the film's
- 1:34:49so-called gritty look is plain and simple the result of the
- 1:34:51shoddiest photography this side of the 70s adult films.
- 1:34:55The framing is horrifically composed and makes a drunken
- 1:34:58wedding video look like Lawrence of Arabia.
- 1:35:00Come on. The sound is inaudible and the
- 1:35:02dialogue, worthless as it is, is nothing more than Mumbles.
- 1:35:05As the story develops, so does incomprehension.
- 1:35:08Midway through, you'll tell yourself this cannot be any more
- 1:35:11senseless. This cannot become any more
- 1:35:13senseless. Well it does, by the end you'll
- 1:35:16be completely lost and then it's over just like that.
- 1:35:20I was assuming there was half an hour left, but it just ends
- 1:35:22without resolving anything or giving us the payoff we deserve.
- 1:35:25What a ripoff. There's zero suspense,
- 1:35:28characters are killed almost right away leaving no room for
- 1:35:31excitement. Plus there's only one massacre
- 1:35:33with a chainsaw and you don't even see anything, and it mostly
- 1:35:36occurs off camera. The final chase with the one
- 1:35:38character that actually gets some interaction with the bad
- 1:35:40guy is obviously the best bit of the movie, but by this point I
- 1:35:43just wanted it to be over. I have no idea why so many
- 1:35:46people say this is a great movie or call it horror with dark
- 1:35:48comic edge. It's nothing of the sort.
- 1:35:50It's an embarrassingly amateur schlock fest that Edward himself
- 1:35:53would disown. Check out the 2003 remake, which
- 1:35:55is a zillion times better. Which is a zillion times the
- 1:35:59movie. This dreadful.
- 1:35:59Nonsenses do not come within a mile of this.
- 1:36:02You've been warned. I don't agree.
- 1:36:06I I can't, I think it's, I don't.
- 1:36:10Everybody has their own preference for things, but I
- 1:36:12feel like saying like framing and show like that was bad.
- 1:36:15That's an objectively false statement right there.
- 1:36:18That shit was good. I don't feel like you can fault
- 1:36:21a film from the 70s looking like it's from the 70s.
- 1:36:24Yeah. That's kind of an odd claim I
- 1:36:26will give him, you know, cuz we did talk about like once the
- 1:36:29killing started it was so rapid fire.
- 1:36:31So I could see that argument being made.
- 1:36:34Yeah, I could see that, yeah. And we, we both did talk about
- 1:36:37that, that pacing, although I thought the build up to them
- 1:36:40getting to the house because, you know, you're watching a
- 1:36:42horror movie and like, you feel the tension.
- 1:36:44They're in a strange place. Like you feel that, you know, so
- 1:36:48I, I disagree with the suspense building, but I can see some of
- 1:36:52that tension being lost. Yeah, quicker than you would
- 1:36:55want it to. Be it's weird.
- 1:36:57Like, I I don't know, I feel like I could be entirely wrong.
- 1:37:02I know there's some people that just, like, have an eye for
- 1:37:05newer movies. So, like, when they see movies
- 1:37:07like this, it's hard for them to watch.
- 1:37:09Yeah. I don't understand the mumble
- 1:37:11dialogue. Like, everything was very clear,
- 1:37:13clearly spoken. I there's a part of me that
- 1:37:15makes me wonder, did you watch a bootleg?
- 1:37:18Did was it a camcorder footage or something?
- 1:37:20I don't know, like did you fuck something up?
- 1:37:23Like because a lot of that stuff is just, maybe it's just because
- 1:37:26we watched it on a really good version.
- 1:37:27We got the Like the Like one of the anniversary Blu-ray editions
- 1:37:31out. There, I've got a theory.
- 1:37:32OK, It must be demons. Just kidding.
- 1:37:36So I think maybe this is somebody who is not from a
- 1:37:41southern area and he thinks like accents equal bad, equal mumble.
- 1:37:47And that's the thing. Like we actually get authentic
- 1:37:50accents. Yeah.
- 1:37:51Which is so rare for this type of thing.
- 1:37:53God, and I was, I was having this whole rant at Travis from
- 1:37:57the new season of White Lotus, not the theme song rant, but it
- 1:38:01was about like one of the like main characters, like it's a
- 1:38:05family of five and they're all from North Carolina, but their
- 1:38:08accents are not North Carolina Southern.
- 1:38:12And it's so frustrating. And everybody's like, wow, I'm
- 1:38:14really impressed at Parker Posey and Allen.
- 1:38:16What's his face's Southern accents?
- 1:38:18And I'm like, I'm not, they don't sound North Carolina.
- 1:38:22It's frustrating. It's.
- 1:38:23Weird accents. I don't have the expected accent
- 1:38:28for somebody from. Where I grew.
- 1:38:29Up but I will say I have heard other people from Harlan speak
- 1:38:34like me. Yeah, it's notably the Harlem
- 1:38:37boy on the Kentucky basketball team.
- 1:38:39He has my accent and I'm like, that's weird.
- 1:38:41Like I'm I feel good that other people from that area don't like
- 1:38:45they have like a similar accent to me because it's weird.
- 1:38:48Like you like you'll call bullshit on stuff like that, but
- 1:38:51like it's, it's nuanced. Yeah, and I feel like it's
- 1:38:53probably one of those things. Like I could tell you, like
- 1:38:55there's posh British accent and cockney British accent, and I
- 1:38:59couldn't tell you any area between them.
- 1:39:02Yeah, and I'm sure they exist. I fully believe they exist.
- 1:39:05But if you told me but he was a speaking in a certain dialect, I
- 1:39:07couldn't tell you if that was true or not.
- 1:39:09Yeah, I'd have to take you at face value.
- 1:39:11So I'm immediately immersed when it's an accent I'm not familiar
- 1:39:14with. But I do know that sometimes
- 1:39:16there's some, like, I want to say classism, but there is like
- 1:39:21a sense of that where some people think that if you're
- 1:39:25Southern, it automatically means that you're poorer or more
- 1:39:28stupid or less classy. It's just generalizations.
- 1:39:33Yeah. I mean, and that happens anytime
- 1:39:34you generalize any group of people like you.
- 1:39:36Just it's really, it's bad. I hate it.
- 1:39:40And I'm not accusing that. I'm not accusing this reviewer
- 1:39:43necessarily of doing that. It's just I've heard that enough
- 1:39:45times in my life that I wonder if him saying mumbly is really
- 1:39:48him just saying like they're too Southern for me to understand.
- 1:39:52Yeah. Yeah, I get it.
- 1:39:54The only thing I'll agree with is the pacing issues.
- 1:39:58So like, yeah, at the in there, but I also think some people
- 1:40:02could probably be bored by the beginning with them in the van.
- 1:40:06Yeah, because we spent a lot of time there.
- 1:40:08I I think it's interesting, but I could see why some people
- 1:40:11wouldn't find it. I just, I don't know, it's such
- 1:40:14a balancing act because you need to keep the tension going in a
- 1:40:17story, but also part of the movie is watching the movie
- 1:40:20happen. It can't just all be action the
- 1:40:22entire. Time, yeah, you got to have set
- 1:40:24up, but you also have to have like things like like go to
- 1:40:28micro payouts happening like all the things to keep you engaged,
- 1:40:33which I thought that they did. We get that.
- 1:40:34Yeah, we get that with the hitchhiker joining.
- 1:40:35Them. Yeah, I thought that they.
- 1:40:36Did we started off with corpses, like displayed?
- 1:40:39Yeah. You know, I don't know.
- 1:40:41All right. So let's hop over to some
- 1:40:44Western reviews, show we All right, so we'll go to Instagram,
- 1:40:51Cubesave says. Perfectly grimy.
- 1:40:53Yeah, it is like the perfect bit of grime there 'cause it's
- 1:40:57exactly what we were talking about before.
- 1:40:59You can feel it, you can sense it, you can smell it.
- 1:41:01Yeah, I don't like sweaty thinking about it, you know?
- 1:41:04Yeah, like, but in the like authentic kind of muggy, intense
- 1:41:08heat kind of way. MXRNI or I think it's supposed
- 1:41:13to be Marni. CM says.
- 1:41:16Prefer the 2003 remake to be honest.
- 1:41:18Oh man, you're just like Sean. And other people, I mean, I've
- 1:41:23heard that sentiment shared by a lot of people before.
- 1:41:26It's a good remake. I get it.
- 1:41:28If that was your first experience with the series, I
- 1:41:31can understand why that would have like a special place in
- 1:41:33your. Heart, I think that's probably,
- 1:41:35yeah. I think you're bringing up a
- 1:41:37good point with that if that's your first experience, because
- 1:41:39that's kind of how I am with the Hills Have Eyes.
- 1:41:41Same. Yeah, I like the remake better,
- 1:41:43but I know a lot of people love the original and I get it.
- 1:41:46But to me, that was my first experience with it.
- 1:41:48And I, after going back to It's hard going to a modern movie
- 1:41:52sometimes and go into an older movie because the times have
- 1:41:56changed and we're wired to like, you know, want certain things
- 1:42:00from movies and I get. It, it is like an actual
- 1:42:03psychological thing that the first thing your brain thinks of
- 1:42:06is what it holds on to. That's why those like little
- 1:42:09illusion things like is this a Princess or a duck?
- 1:42:12Like those types of pictures. That's why those work, because
- 1:42:15you hear one thing and then your brain sees it and then it's
- 1:42:18stuck on that and you have to kind of like forcibly rewire it
- 1:42:21to see the other other thing. And I'm not necessarily saying
- 1:42:24that that's what you are. No, no.
- 1:42:28Yeah, because like, I get it. Like, I mean, you don't have
- 1:42:30like you couldn't have watched the original and watch that one
- 1:42:33and find it better too. You know, we're we're champions
- 1:42:36of that. Here there's a lot more story in
- 1:42:38the 2003 What if? That's the one I'm thinking of.
- 1:42:40It might not be. I could be entirely.
- 1:42:41Wrong. Yeah, I've tried having this
- 1:42:46conversation with you many times.
- 1:42:47I can never distinguish. Which one is that?
- 1:42:49The 1:00 where they're draft dodging.
- 1:42:50Nope. Goddamn it.
- 1:42:52OK, never mind. Nope.
- 1:42:55That's the one where they are coming back from Mexico.
- 1:43:00They have the Pinato drugs with them.
- 1:43:03We have the guy with the lip thing.
- 1:43:09No, we're not gonna have this argument right now.
- 1:43:11We'll we'll get there eventually.
- 1:43:13Yeah. And see, this is what I'm
- 1:43:15working on with people. All right?
- 1:43:17But I get it. Well, like I said, we're we're
- 1:43:19champions of people having those sets of opinions on the show.
- 1:43:21So, you know, if that was your favorite, more power to you.
- 1:43:26All right, let's see, Do I have one here?
- 1:43:27No. OK, that's a that's a further
- 1:43:29reviews. OK, Yeah.
- 1:43:31I'm kind of surprised. I am too.
- 1:43:33I thought with a classic. We have like a lot of people,
- 1:43:36but maybe people thought what else is there to say?
- 1:43:39People have already got covered. Maybe you all don't love us.
- 1:43:41I don't care, you know, I don't care if you don't love me.
- 1:43:44Let me see. Hold on real quick.
- 1:43:46I took care. I'm sorry.
- 1:43:48Come back. I was trying to find, there's a,
- 1:43:52there's an episode of Scream Queens, the Ryan Murphy Scream
- 1:43:56Queens, where Wes is teaching a movie stud, a cinema studies
- 1:44:02class or whatever. And he gives a little recap on
- 1:44:06Texas Chainsaw and how the how it's a perfect movie and how the
- 1:44:10chainsaw is a perfect weapon. And I was trying to find the
- 1:44:12quote on it. To the best of your abilities,
- 1:44:16what was? It that was the best of my
- 1:44:18abilities. I don't have a good.
- 1:44:21Yeah, I got you. If you can find a clip of it and
- 1:44:22plug it in, depending on how much time you have editing, feel
- 1:44:25free to plug it in right here. I don't plan on drawing for this
- 1:44:28one since I've already got something down.
- 1:44:29So yeah, OK, cool. Yeah.
- 1:44:31So yeah, that was and that was the moment we were watching
- 1:44:34screen claims. I was like, you're gonna like
- 1:44:35this moment, Travis. Yeah, I remember that episode.
- 1:44:39Yeah. OK, cool.
- 1:44:40Well, thanks everybody who did. Yeah.
- 1:44:42Send in reviews. I always appreciate that.
- 1:44:44Everybody's thoughts on these movies?

- 1:46:13If it's ten, do 10. Yes, do 10.

- 1:46:31Sure, Yep, Yep. But.
- 1:46:33All right, I think that does it for this episode.
- 1:46:35Yeah. So I guess until next time.
- 1:46:37All right, bye. So the sadness.
- 1:46:52I'm chopping this all up because I fucking.
- 1:46:54The way I've done this, yeah, you're editing, so I don't care
- 1:46:57how long you take to get through full results today.
- 1:47:00Browse all the way to the end, OK?
- 1:47:02Glad you can do that now. Me too, OK.
