- 0:06Speaker 1: Birdland. That one was crazy. The Orioles won a game
- 0:11Speaker 1: Monday night that devised belief. They had one hit until
- 0:15Speaker 1: the ninth inning. They were down to a one to
- 0:17Speaker 1: two count. One more strike games over, they get shut out,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and this show would have a different tone. But it
- 0:24Speaker 1: didn't happen. Butsio came through, so did the Orioles seven
- 0:28Speaker 1: late runs for a wild and crazy seven to five
- 0:32Speaker 1: win at Kansas City. It was much needed and we
- 0:34Speaker 1: got a lot to dissect over the next hour after
- 0:37Speaker 1: that game, Steve, Tim and Brad another edition of Birdland Territory.
- 0:42Speaker 1: We've acknowledged a couple times. These amazing wins don't often
- 0:45Speaker 1: lead to win streaks, and the Oriols are zer for
- 0:48Speaker 1: two in that regard. Maybe the third time will be
- 0:50Speaker 1: the charm here, guys. But it felt different. It felt good,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and I think some pressure maybe was relieved off this
- 0:59Speaker 1: team with a victory. I hope.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah. I think we've talked about before.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Momentum is really hard to keep a game to game
- 1:07Speaker 3: in one hundred and six to two game season. But
- 1:09Speaker 3: I always thought these extra inning games where you kind
- 1:12Speaker 3: of feel like your back's against the wall, you don't
- 1:15Speaker 3: know if you're going to come through, you're waiting for
- 1:16Speaker 3: somebody to come through. And I don't know, just the
- 1:19Speaker 3: extra inning wins always had a different feel after winning them,
- 1:21Speaker 3: especially a tight game like that, where I mean, like
- 1:24Speaker 3: we said, if they don't get that hit in the ninth,
- 1:26Speaker 3: we're talking completely different today. But it's there's just something different,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and I think giving themselves a couple more innings there,
- 1:32Speaker 3: they got the offense going hit a big Grand Slam
- 1:35Speaker 3: in the twelfth, But I don't know, it just feels
- 1:37Speaker 3: a little bit different when you win those extra aning,
- 1:39Speaker 3: hard fought games, especially when you don't score in those
- 1:41Speaker 3: extra inning frames to begin with, and you shut them
- 1:44Speaker 3: out to give your offense another chance. So I really
- 1:47Speaker 3: liked what happened there in the extra is not so
- 1:49Speaker 3: much the first eight innings, but that doesn't really matter.
- 1:51Speaker 3: It's all about getting that You got to get the
- 1:53Speaker 3: twenty seven outs and the Royals weren't able to do it,
- 1:55Speaker 3: and the Ools capitalized on it.
- 2:00Speaker 4: A bizarre game, guys, right, Like, it was so frustrating
- 2:04Speaker 4: watching it through the first you know, eight and two
- 2:07Speaker 4: thirds of the game, where the Orioles went thirty batters
- 2:12Speaker 4: between hits. Taylor war getting the double in the first inning,
- 2:16Speaker 4: and then Samuel Basil with two outs to go in
- 2:19Speaker 4: the ninth. There was one stretch where fourteen consecutive Orioles
- 2:23Speaker 4: were retired and it was funny.
- 2:26Speaker 5: I was texting a buddy of mine.
- 2:29Speaker 4: While watching that game, and I kept thinking, man like,
- 2:33Speaker 4: the Royals had been dominating this game.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Everywhere besides the scoreboard.
- 2:38Speaker 4: They had so many chances to blow open that game,
- 2:41Speaker 4: but they were just unable to deliver that blow. They
- 2:45Speaker 4: had three bases loaded situations and didn't come through, two
- 2:49Speaker 4: of them with two outs. One of them, Kyle Bradish,
- 2:52Speaker 4: got out with no outs. The Royals had a chance
- 2:56Speaker 4: to really take command of the game, but they kept
- 2:59Speaker 4: the Orioles in and the Orioles took advantage.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I think they were to.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Their last strike guys, and it was Besidoh tying that game,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and Beavers gave them a lead to Veris and Besio
- 3:11Speaker 1: again in the twelfth and go ahead, Brad, what were
- 3:14Speaker 1: you about to say now?
- 3:14Speaker 3: I was just gonna say, I think the Orioles are
- 3:17Speaker 3: I mean, the royals losing streak had played into this
- 3:19Speaker 3: a little bit, because teams seemed to find a way
- 3:21Speaker 3: to lose when you're on one of these losing streaks,
- 3:24Speaker 3: and I think it just kind of played into the
- 3:26Speaker 3: Oriole's hand there where they weren't able to take advantage
- 3:28Speaker 3: of any of these opportunities they had, which was it
- 3:30Speaker 3: felt like from inning one to inning seven, they had
- 3:32Speaker 3: an opportunity to score every single time and extend the lead,
- 3:36Speaker 3: and they just weren't able to bright.
- 3:38Speaker 4: I remember you bringing up on a prior episode just
- 3:42Speaker 4: what type of lift it can give a team winning
- 3:46Speaker 4: this type of long game, a twelve inning game where
- 3:49Speaker 4: you really had to grind, there were self inflicted mistakes,
- 3:53Speaker 4: but you ended up making the plays necessary to win
- 3:55Speaker 4: the game. Like what was the clubhouse feeling last night
- 3:58Speaker 4: in a game like that?
- 4:00Speaker 3: I think they were super pumped. Like I said, I
- 4:02Speaker 3: think that was a really uplifting win. I know we
- 4:04Speaker 3: talked about the win against the Diamondbacks last week and
- 4:07Speaker 3: how we were hoping that would kind of, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 3: propel it.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Into a further winning streak.
- 4:12Speaker 3: But winning games like that is huge when you have
- 4:15Speaker 3: every single guy in the bullpen basically contribute. That was
- 4:17Speaker 3: available last night, even getting Tyler Wells up there in
- 4:20Speaker 3: an extreme emergency situation. They just you can tell they
- 4:24Speaker 3: were super pumped. Tyler Wells actually made a comment as
- 4:26Speaker 3: he was going by the camera he was pumped up.
- 4:28Speaker 3: It's just it's really uplifting like that and having, you know,
- 4:32Speaker 3: rookies step up and guys who don't have tons of
- 4:35Speaker 3: experience step up and get big outs. Rico Garcia continues
- 4:38Speaker 3: to just be amazing for this team and uplift them
- 4:41Speaker 3: in ways that I don't think anybody saw coming. It's
- 4:43Speaker 3: just it's wins like that where it was a true
- 4:45Speaker 3: team win where the bullpen kept giving the offense a chance,
- 4:48Speaker 3: just waiting for them to get a run across the board,
- 4:51Speaker 3: and wins like that are just huge and it's hard
- 4:53Speaker 3: to quantify in the box score. Like I said, it was,
- 4:56Speaker 3: I think the game had all the emotions. You were frustrated,
- 4:59Speaker 3: you were a you were pumped, you were oh no,
- 5:02Speaker 3: this is going to happen again. They're in the tall thning,
- 5:04Speaker 3: but they pulled it out, and I think the clubhouse
- 5:07Speaker 3: was super pumped after that game.
- 5:10Speaker 1: So Berdland just the second win in the last seven
- 5:13Speaker 1: games for the Orioles and now they are eleven and twelve,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and there were plenty of things that went wrong, but
- 5:19Speaker 1: they're better to dissect and repair and work on after
- 5:24Speaker 1: you've won, especially one like that. And now we get
- 5:27Speaker 1: to le Leote Taveres. This is amazing what he's doing.
- 5:32Speaker 1: So last year, guys, he hit two o five. His
- 5:34Speaker 1: OPS was five thirty in one hundred and eighty played
- 5:37Speaker 1: appearances between Texas and Seattle two five, five thirty. Now
- 5:42Speaker 1: he's batting three forty one nine to ninety eight and
- 5:45Speaker 1: he's walked nine times in fifty four played appearances, where
- 5:48Speaker 1: last year he walked five and oneint eighty. This is
- 5:50Speaker 1: crazy on base percentage last year two twenty six, four
- 5:54Speaker 1: point fifty three. Now he's doubled us on base. I mean,
- 5:58Speaker 1: obviously it's probably not sustainab we're not expecting him to
- 6:01Speaker 1: hit three hundred this year, but what he's doing right now,
- 6:05Speaker 1: it's just like we predicted tim Leota Tavares.
- 6:07Speaker 3: And.
- 6:11Speaker 5: I mean we were talking about this on Sunday.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Guys, just these unlikely guys that you thought heading into
- 6:18Speaker 4: the year keep coming up big for this club and
- 6:22Speaker 4: Leodi Taveres.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Where would they be without him?
- 6:25Speaker 4: Brad Because Colton Kowser, it's been a rough start to
- 6:28Speaker 4: the season. There's no way around it. There were a
- 6:31Speaker 4: couple more strikeouts for him. Last night he ended up
- 6:33Speaker 4: getting pinch hit for Weston Wilson came in in the
- 6:36Speaker 4: eighth inning Tavers playing the strong defense, and Steve's right,
- 6:41Speaker 4: is there going to be a regression to the mean
- 6:43Speaker 4: If you look at.
- 6:44Speaker 5: His career, he's never been this hot of a hitter.
- 6:47Speaker 4: But we were talking on my show yesterday Brad just
- 6:51Speaker 4: if he could be that guy that he was for
- 6:54Speaker 4: the Rangers in twenty twenty three, where he played a
- 6:57Speaker 4: big role in that club that ended up winning the
- 6:59Speaker 4: World Series that year, getting ops plus of one oh one,
- 7:03Speaker 4: so slightly above average to go along with the defense.
- 7:07Speaker 5: You'll take it.
- 7:07Speaker 4: But that being said, you're gonna ride this hot streak
- 7:10Speaker 4: as long as possible right now.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Absolutely, and I think the World Series experience is huge
- 7:16Speaker 3: for this team. Last night in the postgame interview, he's
- 7:18Speaker 3: talking about taking a side underneath his wing and just
- 7:20Speaker 3: kind of stay with him. Man, you're a good player.
- 7:23Speaker 3: It's going to come around. And we saw that come
- 7:24Speaker 3: through too. So he's shown leadership on that side of it,
- 7:27Speaker 3: throwing the defense that you already expected and now this
- 7:30Speaker 3: unexpected offense. I think it's huge right now because it's
- 7:33Speaker 3: almost building a bridge until the big names get going,
- 7:36Speaker 3: and I think when you can kind of rely on
- 7:38Speaker 3: the later in the lineup at that that he gives.
- 7:42Speaker 3: And to me, it's more of seeing pitches in the zone.
- 7:46Speaker 3: He's taking his walks when it's time to but the
- 7:49Speaker 3: pitches in the zone he's not missing, like that high
- 7:51Speaker 3: change up last night he hit for a grand slam.
- 7:53Speaker 3: If he's swinging kind of crazy, he probably swings underneath
- 7:56Speaker 3: that or over the top of it. But right now
- 7:57Speaker 3: he's seeing the zone so well, and that's what I'm seeing.
- 8:00Speaker 3: It's just a short, simple swing. That ball didn't seem
- 8:02Speaker 3: to me like it should have got out, but he
- 8:04Speaker 3: absolutely crushed it. And it's just a short, simple swing
- 8:07Speaker 3: in the zone right now, and he's taken advantage of
- 8:09Speaker 3: the mistakes The's pitchers are giving him.
- 8:13Speaker 1: It kept carrying like any power hitter would hit one
- 8:15Speaker 1: four nineteen is where it ended up, and four runs
- 8:18Speaker 1: for the Orioles, and as it turned out, they pretty
- 8:20Speaker 1: much needed them all in a seven to five win.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So many more aspects to get into bradish is outing
- 8:26Speaker 1: what about Pasio, lauded for his work behind the plate
- 8:30Speaker 1: and at the plate in this game, Gunner picked off twice.
- 8:34Speaker 1: That was frustrating. And the bullpen roster moves that are upcoming,
- 8:38Speaker 1: it's going to be challenging for the Orioles in a
- 8:40Speaker 1: department and an aspect of this team performing well. How
- 8:44Speaker 1: they're going to get all these guys on the roster
- 8:46Speaker 1: who are soon to come back. We'll touch on that
- 8:48Speaker 1: and more coming up Birdland Territory.
- 8:50Speaker 6: There are more than seventy thousand events listed on the
- 8:55Speaker 6: sea Geek app. So if you're looking to do basically
- 8:57Speaker 6: anything this spring or summer, there's one place to go.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 7: Seekeke has all the concerts, baseball games, World Cup tickets,
- 9:04Speaker 7: whatever you need is on cke. Trust me, I'm going
- 9:06Speaker 7: to be hitting some concerts and some festivals this summer.
- 9:09Speaker 7: I'm gonna be looking for see Geek.
- 9:11Speaker 6: I can't wait to see aj g adding the best
- 9:14Speaker 6: tickets he can for concerts and festivals. We'll get plenty
- 9:17Speaker 6: of pictures there. But also when he's looking, what he
- 9:20Speaker 6: does is he looks for when he's going to say
- 9:22Speaker 6: an arena for a concert, a green dot meaning he's
- 9:24Speaker 6: got a good deal in a good spot. That's where
- 9:26Speaker 6: Seekeek helps you out with over thirty five million download

- 9:46Speaker 6: and have the code automatically added to your account so
- 9:49Speaker 6: you can use it later.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Props to see Geek Birdland Territory rolling on here after
- 9:55Speaker 1: the Orioles incredible win on Monday night, as we tape
- 9:58Speaker 1: this Tuesday morning ahead of too in Kansas City. So
- 10:03Speaker 1: when he was on the farm, guys, and I was
- 10:05Speaker 1: covering the Oriel miners as I do, I heard from
- 10:09Speaker 1: many people, most outside the organization doubted Samuel Bessaio's defense
- 10:14Speaker 1: at the major league level as a catcher. The Orioles,
- 10:18Speaker 1: to their credit, never did. I kept telling fans Oriel
- 10:21Speaker 1: Brass feels this guy can catch into big leagues. They
- 10:25Speaker 1: keep telling me that. And because he's got a hose
- 10:29Speaker 1: for an arm, he's agile for a big guy of
- 10:32Speaker 1: that size back there, and he wants to do it
- 10:35Speaker 1: so badly. He told me with all his heart and soul,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I want to catch in the big leagues and show
- 10:41Speaker 1: these guys I can do it. And I think he
- 10:43Speaker 1: made strides late last year the pitching staff started to
- 10:46Speaker 1: believe in him and Brad that's really what has to
- 10:49Speaker 1: happen here. If the pitchers think the same way some
- 10:52Speaker 1: of those scouts thought and have doubts about this guy,
- 10:55Speaker 1: maybe this can't work. But it is working, yeah.
- 10:58Speaker 3: And I mean if you watch a game last night,
- 11:00Speaker 3: he was like a hockey goalie back there. Kyle Bradish
- 11:03Speaker 3: had a hard time throwing his fastball, and he went heavy, heavy,
- 11:05Speaker 3: breaking balls, and he blocked every single one. And there
- 11:08Speaker 3: was multiple times there where he made great backhanded picks.
- 11:12Speaker 2: To keep the ball in front of him and keep
- 11:13Speaker 2: it running from scoring.
- 11:14Speaker 3: And if you don't have confidence after watching that game
- 11:17Speaker 3: last night as an Orioles pitcher, then I don't know
- 11:19Speaker 3: who you'd have confidence in, because he did a great
- 11:21Speaker 3: job back there. There was even a couple of times
- 11:23Speaker 3: he called time out, went and talked to the picture,
- 11:25Speaker 3: settled them down.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And that's what you want to see.
- 11:27Speaker 3: It's it's tough as a young catcher to go out
- 11:30Speaker 3: there and instill confidence in these guys. If you don't
- 11:32Speaker 3: know what you're gonna say when you got there, you're
- 11:34Speaker 3: nervous to go out there and just kind of calm
- 11:35Speaker 3: the picture down. But he showed great confidence back there
- 11:38Speaker 3: behind the play, calling pitches and then, like I said,
- 11:41Speaker 3: those timeouts, they were huge to just kind of settle
- 11:43Speaker 3: Bradish into a couple of times where he got of
- 11:45Speaker 3: those big jams and didn't wasn't prompted by the dugout.
- 11:48Speaker 3: He went up by himself right away called time and
- 11:50Speaker 3: I think that was that was great to see. And
- 11:53Speaker 3: I think the injury to Adlie might end up being
- 11:56Speaker 3: a blessing in disguise for Orioles. I think getting more
- 11:58Speaker 3: opportunities for him behind the play he might give him
- 12:01Speaker 3: more confidence moving on the season, not only behind the plate,
- 12:03Speaker 3: but while he's hitting also, And I think he's just
- 12:07Speaker 3: doing a great job.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Last night really displayed it.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Yeah, And Adlie Rutchman he's eligible to come off the
- 12:12Speaker 4: IL today. We'll see if he ends up getting activated
- 12:16Speaker 4: or not. But for me, that was Samuel Pisio's best
- 12:20Speaker 4: game so far this season, just most all around game
- 12:24Speaker 4: where he had the two big hits in the ninth
- 12:27Speaker 4: inning where he was down in the count it was
- 12:29Speaker 4: one two and you're thinking, oh, geez, here we go.
- 12:32Speaker 4: But he came through in that big spot and then
- 12:34Speaker 4: came through again in the twelfth inning to lead off
- 12:37Speaker 4: that inning and drive in another run. He also worked
- 12:41Speaker 4: two walks, and Brad, you're one hundred percent right. His
- 12:44Speaker 4: blocking last night was fantastic, and that has to give
- 12:49Speaker 4: pitchers so much confidence in him that, Okay, this ball
- 12:52Speaker 4: is not going to get beyond him. We're not going
- 12:54Speaker 4: to give a base runner potential extra ninety feet. But
- 12:58Speaker 4: how about the throw to holds Mike Helgercia. That was
- 13:03Speaker 4: a perfect throw to get him trying to steal second base.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Samuel Bessie was really really strong last night.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Really strong, and he short hopped that throw. And here's
- 13:14Speaker 1: something I asked richmand about during the last homestand since
- 13:18Speaker 1: ADLEI has short hopped numerous throws, I went up to
- 13:21Speaker 1: him and I said, don't yell at me for suggesting this,
- 13:24Speaker 1: but are you intending to short off some throws? And
- 13:27Speaker 1: he said no, but you're trying to make the perfect
- 13:30Speaker 1: throw low into the bag. And if I'm going to air,
- 13:33Speaker 1: I'm going to air low rather than high. And so
- 13:36Speaker 1: it's interesting because I wondered to him, I said, I
- 13:39Speaker 1: was wondering, maybe analytics is telling you the ball gets
- 13:42Speaker 1: there faster I it skips, and these infielders are so
- 13:45Speaker 1: good at picking them, you're not worried about it. But
- 13:47Speaker 1: he said, no, it's not that he goes. It's trying
- 13:49Speaker 1: to make a really great throw and if you're wrong,
- 13:52Speaker 1: you want to be wrong short then high.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Interesting take there, definitely, And I think having the confidence
- 14:00Speaker 3: of the taggers between Gunner and Jeremiah at second that
- 14:04Speaker 3: they work from up to down, where a lot of
- 14:06Speaker 3: guys when they try to pick it they try to
- 14:08Speaker 3: start with their glove moving up and then it's really
- 14:11Speaker 3: hard to come back in time. But they do a
- 14:12Speaker 3: great job of kind of setting where they want to
- 14:14Speaker 3: start the tag and just going straight to the ground.
- 14:17Speaker 3: That was one of the things when I was with
- 14:18Speaker 3: the Orioles, Bobby Dickerson was amazing with JJ Hardy and
- 14:21Speaker 3: Jonathan Scope. They worked from they got their high point
- 14:23Speaker 3: and they worked down, and I mean with our with
- 14:26Speaker 3: Weeders back there and Caleb Joseph, it was just one
- 14:28Speaker 3: of those things I'm starting to see that again with
- 14:30Speaker 3: the orioles, where they kind of set the glove where
- 14:33Speaker 3: they want to start it and work their way down
- 14:35Speaker 3: and if it's above that, it's going to be really
- 14:37Speaker 3: hard to tag the runner out. But I mean, every
- 14:39Speaker 3: single time in these short hops, it's a short hop,
- 14:41Speaker 3: the glove stays where it is at the highest point
- 14:44Speaker 3: and it goes straight down and that, you know, that
- 14:46Speaker 3: tenth of a second there makes all the difference. And
- 14:48Speaker 3: last night Jeremia's pick at second was a great example
- 14:51Speaker 3: of that. Just put the glove where you want to
- 14:52Speaker 3: start it, and he caught it and tagged him and
- 14:54Speaker 3: it wasn't even close to the second base, where a
- 14:56Speaker 3: lot of times, if you're working the glove up towards
- 14:58Speaker 3: the sky, it's gonna be really hard to bring it
- 15:00Speaker 3: down and tag him out there.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Bret, I wanted to get your thoughts on something that
- 15:05Speaker 4: Ben said yesterday on the broadcast where it was early
- 15:09Speaker 4: on in the game, Bradish was still in and Bassio
- 15:13Speaker 4: would set up he would set up his glove but
- 15:16Speaker 4: then pull it down, and Ben kind of brought up
- 15:19Speaker 4: the point saying, Hey, you know, if I was a pitcher,
- 15:22Speaker 4: I'd want him to just keep that that way of
- 15:23Speaker 4: a target to hit.
- 15:25Speaker 5: What did you think of that explanation? Were you the
- 15:28Speaker 5: same way.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of a new way of catching, and
- 15:32Speaker 3: I think I it led to some of my struggles
- 15:34Speaker 3: later in my career. I mean, I'm just so used
- 15:37Speaker 3: to the target being set, but with how they're grading
- 15:40Speaker 3: catchers now, they want him to work down up to
- 15:42Speaker 3: give the umpire a better look and kind of still
- 15:44Speaker 3: strikes at the bottom of his zone.
- 15:45Speaker 2: So for me, I really struggle with it because I
- 15:47Speaker 2: was so used to.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Throwing to where the glove was, but you have a
- 15:51Speaker 3: tendency as a catcher to kind of drop your glove
- 15:53Speaker 3: as you catch it. So I know what Ben was saying,
- 15:56Speaker 3: But like he said, these guys are so good now
- 15:58Speaker 3: that it's they're not looking for a target. They're just
- 16:01Speaker 3: throwing to an area and they're using their stuff. So
- 16:03Speaker 3: it's it's like a I watched some of these games
- 16:05Speaker 3: sometimes and I feel like I'm watching a completely different
- 16:09Speaker 3: game that I played. So I know exactly what Ben
- 16:11Speaker 3: was saying, but it's just kind of how they do
- 16:13Speaker 3: it now. They set the target where they kind of
- 16:15Speaker 3: want it, drop it, and then bring it back up
- 16:17Speaker 3: towards that area, so beside, I was doing exactly what
- 16:19Speaker 3: they're they're teaching him, and that's that's how they want
- 16:22Speaker 3: guys to do it now.
- 16:22Speaker 2: But for me, I definitely struggle with that.
- 16:24Speaker 3: But with with Braders thrown so many breaking balls, I
- 16:27Speaker 3: don't think he really is.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Looking at the target.
- 16:28Speaker 3: He's just thrown to an area and I think it
- 16:31Speaker 3: helps the catcher be able to frame it better, maybe
- 16:32Speaker 3: steal a couple of strikes here or there. And then
- 16:34Speaker 3: last night we saw what the picks. It's the ball
- 16:36Speaker 3: you start your golo down, and if it's in the dirty,
- 16:38Speaker 3: I think it gives them a better chance to keep
- 16:40Speaker 3: the ball in front of them.
- 16:43Speaker 1: So changing topics, Gunner gets picked off twice last night.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I like how Albernez addresses that in the post game,
- 16:50Speaker 1: almost in a joking manner, where he says to the media,
- 16:53Speaker 1: I told Gunner, there's your pickoff quota for the year.
- 16:56Speaker 1: It's his way of saying that's not acceptable. But I'm
- 16:59Speaker 1: not throwing and our start player under the bus here
- 17:02Speaker 1: on it. But I'm not gonna ignore it either, and
- 17:04Speaker 1: I've already addressed it with the player. I'm sure Gunner
- 17:07Speaker 1: feels terrible to his credit, he had to focus to
- 17:10Speaker 1: make that defensive play at third base when the ball
- 17:12Speaker 1: got away from Weston Wilson, critical double play and extra innings.
- 17:16Speaker 1: So here's my take, guys. I'm just not gonna worry
- 17:19Speaker 1: about Gunner Henderson right now. I know he's not hitting
- 17:22Speaker 1: the way He's gonna two pickoffs, it's just not like him.
- 17:25Speaker 1: But I'm still gonna say this is gonna be a
- 17:29Speaker 1: great year when it's over. Right now, though it's not that.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Yeah, And you know what I'm starting to see last
- 17:35Speaker 3: night in his bats when he took those walks, he
- 17:38Speaker 3: was like a frustrated bat throw He wants to help
- 17:41Speaker 3: the team win so bad and he's willing to take
- 17:44Speaker 3: his walks when he gets it. But I think he's
- 17:45Speaker 3: trying to do anything he can to help out if
- 17:48Speaker 3: his bat's not there at this moment. And that's just
- 17:51Speaker 3: my take on it. I might be completely off on that,
- 17:53Speaker 3: but there was when he took those two walks, he
- 17:55Speaker 3: seemed extra adamant about taking the walk, and he was
- 17:59Speaker 3: just kind of he was pumped about it, but at
- 18:01Speaker 3: the same time, you could tell there's a little bit
- 18:02Speaker 3: of frustration creeping in there. The second basement. It made
- 18:05Speaker 3: a nice diving play on the ball in the hole,
- 18:07Speaker 3: and he just kind of feels you can kind of
- 18:09Speaker 3: see hitters and a lot of times.
- 18:11Speaker 2: You want to face those guys when they're going through
- 18:13Speaker 2: those moments.
- 18:14Speaker 3: But at the same time, a hitter like Gunner, you
- 18:16Speaker 3: know he's going to come out of it, So you're
- 18:17Speaker 3: getting worried that the clock is ticking on batters like Gunner.
- 18:20Speaker 3: So I think he's just trying to do anything he
- 18:22Speaker 3: can help this team, maybe take an extra step lead,
- 18:25Speaker 3: or maybe the Royals had something because it was two
- 18:27Speaker 3: quick picks. It almost the broadcast almost didn't even pick
- 18:30Speaker 3: up their pickoff throws at first base, So I feel
- 18:33Speaker 3: like there's something there. But I agree with you, Steve,
- 18:35Speaker 3: it's one of those things. He met his pickoff quote
- 18:37Speaker 3: for the year, and he might take that extra half
- 18:39Speaker 3: step towards the bag now to make sure it doesn't
- 18:41Speaker 3: happen again.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Yeah, look, it can't happen, you know in those moments.
- 18:47Speaker 4: It definitely can't happen twice in a game. And what's
- 18:50Speaker 4: really unfortunate is in both of those instances, he probably
- 18:55Speaker 4: would have came around to score because he worked the
- 18:58Speaker 4: walk and then Taylor had the double in the first
- 19:01Speaker 4: inning and he probably would have scored on that. And
- 19:04Speaker 4: then in the ninth inning, with how it played out,
- 19:07Speaker 4: you know, Ward ends up walking, Beavers ends up in
- 19:15Speaker 4: founder that would have moved him over the third and
- 19:16Speaker 4: then Sam wall I'm sure he's kicking himself. Those type
- 19:20Speaker 4: of moments can't happen in that type of game where
- 19:23Speaker 4: runs are at a premium and your offense is really
- 19:25Speaker 4: really scuffling. But Brad, I kind of want to get
- 19:29Speaker 4: your thoughts from a reliever perspective, from a pitcher perspective,
- 19:33Speaker 4: like picking off a base runner, how difficult is that?
- 19:37Speaker 4: Like what goes into that in trying to execute it?
- 19:42Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, after the leadoff walk, you're kicking yourself
- 19:44Speaker 3: because that's the last thing, especially in a one nothing
- 19:47Speaker 3: game of the ninth inning, that's the absolute last thing
- 19:49Speaker 3: you want to do. You'd rather hit a hard single
- 19:52Speaker 3: through the hole. For whatever reason. That the leadoff walk
- 19:54Speaker 3: thing is real and I can't explain it. But when
- 19:57Speaker 3: you were you're able to go over there, you walk
- 19:59Speaker 3: them without even making another pitch to the next hitter,
- 20:02Speaker 3: You pick off a runner. I mean, you're thinking the
- 20:04Speaker 3: games over when you get and out like that, that's
- 20:07Speaker 3: a freebie, and it's just handed to you on a platter.
- 20:10Speaker 2: You're thinking this game's over. There's no way.
- 20:11Speaker 3: And then of course he goes to walks the next hitter,
- 20:13Speaker 3: maybe by the next two, and you put yourself in
- 20:16Speaker 3: an even worse spot. But when you get a pickoff
- 20:18Speaker 3: like that, you're thinking it's over, because that's to me,
- 20:21Speaker 3: it was always the first out of the end. If
- 20:22Speaker 3: you get that first out, everything seemed to roll from there.
- 20:25Speaker 3: If the runner got on, especially on a walk, you're
- 20:27Speaker 3: really just pressing to make pitches from there on. So
- 20:30Speaker 3: that had to be a huge lift for ers there
- 20:32Speaker 3: in the ninth. And yeah, he wasn't able to get
- 20:35Speaker 3: it done, but that was a huge lift in that moment.
- 20:37Speaker 3: I was shocked that he actually wasn't able to get
- 20:39Speaker 3: through that inning after that pickoff.
- 20:42Speaker 1: So a few more things to dissect about this wild
- 20:45Speaker 1: night in Kansas City, including Kyle Bradish allowing ten hits
- 20:48Speaker 1: but one run. He's getting close to being himself. I
- 20:52Speaker 1: think we're gonna see it real soon. Touch on that,
- 20:54Speaker 1: and we touch on the bullpen roster moves coming, how
- 20:58Speaker 1: the oriol is gonna make this work. We'll touch on
- 21:01Speaker 1: that in a moment here on Birdland Territory, Big Bad.
- 21:06Speaker 8: Morning Show, Vinnie and Haney, Inside Access Live on YouTube
- 21:10Speaker 8: weekdays six till six, Search Baltimore one oh five seven
- 21:14Speaker 8: the Fan. Subscribe for daily shorts right to your phone
- 21:17Speaker 8: and never missed which you missed? One o five seven the.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Fan So coy Bradish five and a third, ten hits,
- 21:25Speaker 1: one run, three walk, seven k's. They had plenty of
- 21:27Speaker 1: chances to really do big damage and he didn't let
- 21:30Speaker 1: it happen. Three nine six Era. How is he doing? Guys?
- 21:34Speaker 1: Where is he at right now as he tries to
- 21:37Speaker 1: be that number one or two pitcher for the Orioles.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I think I saw it last night when he was
- 21:44Speaker 3: able to front those sinkers to the lefties. That to
- 21:47Speaker 3: me is Kyle bradd She's gonna throw his breaking ball
- 21:49Speaker 3: and when he can, when he can dot that sinker
- 21:52Speaker 3: into a lefty, that's when he's at his best, and
- 21:54Speaker 3: he showed flashes of it last night.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Well Ben made a really good point in the broadcast.
- 21:59Speaker 3: He thought that his box is just slightly ahead of
- 22:02Speaker 3: his arm when he's throwing his fastball, and we saw
- 22:03Speaker 3: that fastballs elevated, and I think that's why he had
- 22:06Speaker 3: so many hits against him, was that he was elevating
- 22:08Speaker 3: the fastball a little bit too much where he wasn't
- 22:11Speaker 3: trying to. Obviously, his breaking ball and his breaking stuff
- 22:14Speaker 3: is gonna be what makes him who he is, and
- 22:16Speaker 3: we saw that he I mean almost exclusively abandoned the
- 22:20Speaker 3: fastball there after about the second or third inning and
- 22:22Speaker 3: through I'd say it was like ninety percent breaking balls
- 22:25Speaker 3: there at the end of the game. So those are there,
- 22:27Speaker 3: He's right there where he wants with the breaking balls.
- 22:29Speaker 3: But those dotted fastballs sinkers that he ran off the
- 22:32Speaker 3: play into a lefty for a looking strikeout, to me
- 22:35Speaker 3: is what makes him so good. When he throws that
- 22:38Speaker 3: force to me, that cuts a little bit into the
- 22:39Speaker 3: lefty to get him off of it, then he can
- 22:41Speaker 3: throw the sinker in and that to me is when
- 22:43Speaker 3: he becomes elite elite, and last night we saw flashes
- 22:46Speaker 3: of it. And you know what you got to give.
- 22:48Speaker 3: He's not gonna have a perfect outing every single time.
- 22:50Speaker 3: He's not gonna have perfect innings, but he made pitches
- 22:52Speaker 3: when he had to, and that's what you want to
- 22:53Speaker 3: see from a front end starter.
- 22:56Speaker 5: That's exactly it, Brad.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I think when you look at that game, did Kyle
- 23:01Speaker 4: Bradish have his best stuff?
- 23:02Speaker 8: No?
- 23:03Speaker 5: Was the command there, No.
- 23:05Speaker 4: I think he went three to zero to three of
- 23:07Speaker 4: the first six batters in the game.
- 23:09Speaker 5: But in a weird way.
- 23:11Speaker 4: The turning point in Kyle Bradish's start, to me was
- 23:16Speaker 4: the bases loaded situation. Not the first out that he got,
- 23:19Speaker 4: but the second out that he got on cag leone,
- 23:22Speaker 4: the slider away. It was a nasty pitch and he
- 23:25Speaker 4: was able to get out of that inning. And then
- 23:28Speaker 4: I think he allowed one base runner in the fourth inning,
- 23:31Speaker 4: had a clean fifth inning, and then they let him
- 23:33Speaker 4: stay in in the fifth inning, when I think it
- 23:36Speaker 4: was Isabel trying to get a bunt down, but with Bradish,
- 23:40Speaker 4: the swing and miss was there. He got fifteen whiffs
- 23:43Speaker 4: and he had seven strikeouts. But to the other side
- 23:47Speaker 4: of it, the ten hits. That's the most amount of
- 23:49Speaker 4: hits he's given up since twenty twenty two. The walks
- 23:52Speaker 4: kind of resurfaced again for him after only having one
- 23:55Speaker 4: walk in his last outing. He had three walks yesterday.
- 23:58Speaker 4: So I think you see the flashes, but if you
- 24:03Speaker 4: are pulling the positives out of this. That's what you
- 24:07Speaker 4: expect out of your top of the line guys when
- 24:09Speaker 4: they don't have their A game, you want them to
- 24:12Speaker 4: keep you in the game. And that's exactly what he did.
- 24:14Speaker 4: He gave up one air and run over five and
- 24:16Speaker 4: a third.
- 24:17Speaker 3: And for me, also sorry, Steve, just real quick the uh.
- 24:20Speaker 3: I love that he was able to get into the
- 24:22Speaker 3: sixth after that long first inning. I think he threw
- 24:24Speaker 3: almost thirty pitches able to get into the six It
- 24:27Speaker 3: just makes the bullpen be able to be extended a
- 24:30Speaker 3: little bit longer, which they needed last night. And I
- 24:32Speaker 3: think just being able to get the even the one
- 24:34Speaker 3: out and the sixth inning there was huge in that game.
- 24:36Speaker 3: And I know it's like one of those finer points,
- 24:38Speaker 3: but I just think being able to get it back,
- 24:41Speaker 3: get the ship rolling again in the right direction and
- 24:44Speaker 3: get into the sixth inning is huge and it will
- 24:46Speaker 3: play for the next two games, I think.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Also, yeah, and I see six innings, three hits, no runs,
- 24:53Speaker 1: ten strikeouts coming. That's coming for Bradish. He can't do
- 24:56Speaker 1: that every night. Who can. But I think he's building
- 24:59Speaker 1: to where we get that breakout start, and really his
- 25:02Speaker 1: season is starting to turn for the better. That's great
- 25:05Speaker 1: news for Birdland. Now in our final minutes, the Orioles
- 25:08Speaker 1: have ends, Achin and Kittrich all on minor league rehab.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Right now, that's three key bullpen pieces. Cameron Foster is
- 25:15Speaker 1: obviously someone who could be optioned back. But then after that, guys.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Three pitchers have no options, Garcia, Hellsley, Suarez. Five have options,
- 25:26Speaker 1: most of which you wouldn't want to send out right now,
- 25:29Speaker 1: from Nunez to Cano to Wolfram to Wells and Foster.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Foster is the only one of the five that, okay,
- 25:38Speaker 1: he might have to go back. How are they going
- 25:40Speaker 1: to pull this off?
- 25:42Speaker 5: I have no idea. We were talking prior to the show.
- 25:47Speaker 4: I think Grant Wolfram might be in danger just because
- 25:52Speaker 4: Dietrich Enz and Keegan Akin are both lefties, and of
- 25:56Speaker 4: course Wolfram is the only lefty in the bullpen right now.
- 26:00Speaker 4: He might be one of the guys just playing the
- 26:03Speaker 4: numbers game, and he of course has options. But that
- 26:07Speaker 4: third picture, I have no idea who it's going to be. Guys,
- 26:12Speaker 4: I really don't know, like all off the top of
- 26:15Speaker 4: my head, I almost would.
- 26:17Speaker 5: Lean Suarez, but Suarez doesn't have options, so that complicates it.
- 26:21Speaker 5: So much, Brad. It's it's really a roster crunch here.
- 26:25Speaker 4: For Mikelias and who would have thought we'd be having
- 26:28Speaker 4: this conversation prior to the season, but the bullpenz just
- 26:31Speaker 4: been that good.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's it's one of those subjects that's super
- 26:35Speaker 3: I'm super sensitive too, and it's, uh, it almost gives
- 26:39Speaker 3: you a PTSD because everybody there there, they know, they know
- 26:42Speaker 3: what's happening down there, and guys understand. You hope that
- 26:46Speaker 3: they're having conversations with the coaching staff that you know,
- 26:49Speaker 3: you might not deserve to go down. It's just where
- 26:51Speaker 3: we're at with the roster right now, and I think
- 26:53Speaker 3: options are gonna play into it. If unless you're willing
- 26:56Speaker 3: to possibly lose Suarez, you're gonna you're gonna have to
- 26:59Speaker 3: option three guys down and guys that don't deserve to
- 27:02Speaker 3: go down, and you just gotta you.
- 27:04Speaker 2: I hope that the coaching staff.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Is just having these conversations with them, and when they
- 27:09Speaker 3: go down at Triple A, they kind of keep where
- 27:11Speaker 3: they're at because all these guys are looking so good
- 27:13Speaker 3: and so sharp right now. It's you could flip a
- 27:16Speaker 3: coin for anybody that's going to be sent out.
- 27:18Speaker 4: How difficult is it living that brad as that guy.
- 27:23Speaker 4: All of these guys are pitching well that we're bringing
- 27:26Speaker 4: up and you probably know, hey, if I have a
- 27:29Speaker 4: rough outing in the next week, that that could do
- 27:32Speaker 4: me in. There's a lot of pressure there for these guys.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it sucks.
- 27:38Speaker 3: There's there's no other way to kind of describe it.
- 27:42Speaker 3: It's you're thinking about it. You know, when you go
- 27:44Speaker 3: out there, you feel like you have to be perfect,
- 27:46Speaker 3: and it's just you can't. You can't fully perform at
- 27:48Speaker 3: that level. And that's it's one of those things where
- 27:51Speaker 3: you hope you put yourself in the spot. But like
- 27:53Speaker 3: we said, with with what they have to do right now,
- 27:57Speaker 3: every guy's put themselves in a spot to stay on
- 27:59Speaker 3: the roster for one reason or the other. Like they
- 28:01Speaker 3: were talking about last night with Suarez, if you wanted
- 28:03Speaker 3: to get rid of him, who's gonna be the long guy?
- 28:05Speaker 3: Maybe Tyler Wells. Maybe you don't know. You don't know
- 28:08Speaker 3: what they're thinking. You don't know where they're gonna go
- 28:10Speaker 3: with this. So it's it's really none of these guys
- 28:13Speaker 3: deserve to go, but you can only have like we
- 28:16Speaker 3: were talking about, for the show thirteen pitchers, So there's
- 28:18Speaker 3: it's just one of those things that's part of the
- 28:20Speaker 3: game which sucks. And these guys who can tell, are
- 28:23Speaker 3: rooting for each other. They have each other's backs. They're
- 28:25Speaker 3: all picking each other up, and the bullpen units are
- 28:29Speaker 3: really strong, and it's what's keeping them at their record
- 28:31Speaker 3: right now and keeping them afloat. They're just giving their
- 28:33Speaker 3: offensive chance to get going here. So you hate to
- 28:36Speaker 3: see any of these guys leave, But like we said
- 28:38Speaker 3: at the end of the day, it's just kind of
- 28:40Speaker 3: the way baseball works, and it's a roster crunch, like
- 28:42Speaker 3: we said.
- 28:44Speaker 1: And on the starting side, we've seen players optioned out
- 28:47Speaker 1: not because of performance, because they needed a spot. It's
- 28:50Speaker 1: already happened to Povich, it tappened to Brandon Young. To
- 28:53Speaker 1: their credit, they went to Triple A and pitched great
- 28:56Speaker 1: Brandon Young International League Pitcher of the Week for a correct,
- 28:59Speaker 1: incredible out and e Ad and Povic has been good.
- 29:01Speaker 1: So that's what you want. You want guys knocking on
- 29:04Speaker 1: the door at Triple A. And if they have to go,
- 29:06Speaker 1: as you said, Brad, keep rolling, keep doing your thing
- 29:09Speaker 1: and realize I didn't do anything wrong here, but I
- 29:12Speaker 1: have to stay sharp. I can't sell for a minute
- 29:14Speaker 1: or end. Maybe when they need a guy, it won't
- 29:16Speaker 1: be me.
- 29:18Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think that's where it gets a little
- 29:20Speaker 3: tricky and triple A is you're hoping it's.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Only the ten days or the minimum to go down.
- 29:24Speaker 3: But then when it starts leaking in two weeks, the
- 29:26Speaker 3: three weeks to four weeks, you just never know. Oh man,
- 29:29Speaker 3: I pitch so well up there, you know, And that's
- 29:32Speaker 3: when the I deserve to be up there, I should
- 29:33Speaker 3: be there, And that's when it just gets really tough
- 29:35Speaker 3: to overcome. So, like I said, I just hope the
- 29:38Speaker 3: front office and the coaching staff is having these conversations
- 29:40Speaker 3: with these guys that they all deserve to be there,
- 29:43Speaker 3: they just can't be. And when you go down, triple A,
- 29:45Speaker 3: do the best you can to just stay where you
- 29:47Speaker 3: are right now, because anything can happen on any given day.
- 29:51Speaker 3: And that's what the best teams do, is they go down,
- 29:53Speaker 3: they stay focused, they're able to stay connected with the
- 29:56Speaker 3: big league team and the coaches and all that kind
- 29:58Speaker 3: of stuff, and when their time comes again, they're ready
- 30:00Speaker 3: to go back up.
- 30:03Speaker 1: I call a baseball season one hundred and sixty two chapters,
- 30:07Speaker 1: with so many more to be written, and to me,
- 30:09Speaker 1: it's fascinating. I mean to think the Ools had this
- 30:11Speaker 1: great win. So what will it mean for the next
- 30:13Speaker 1: ten days? None of us know. Will Leonte Tavera still
- 30:16Speaker 1: be had nine hundred ops in ten days? None of
- 30:19Speaker 1: us know, will Gunner and and Lolonzo finally get locked
- 30:23Speaker 1: in like we expect. None of us know, but we're
