- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Operation Game Night Podcast.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: We are back.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And better than ever, place your bets, ladies and gentlemen, because Clayton and I today are betting on betting games.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Clay, how are you?
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: I'm doing good.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: I think we put a lot of effort into this idea.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: And I think it's going to be fun for us.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: And I'm hoping that it comes across well, both in video and podcast format.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: So we're going to do our best to make this uh brainchild of ours, where we just bet on betting games and have a little fun with this uh actually come to life.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: But I'm doing good.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: I'm excited.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: I'm a little nervous about the betting, but you know, we'll we'll get to that when we get to that.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: But uh we got to debrief our weeks first, right, Travis?
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Uh and by we put a lot of work into this, Clay means that he put a lot of work into this.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So uh this was Clay's kind of brain child to do it this way.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: I'm excited for it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And the best way to see this is going to absolutely be on YouTube.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So if you're watching this on YouTube, go ahead and like and subscribe and help us grow that algorithm so that more people can join in on this betting episode.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: So you you hit it.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Let's let's debrief our week because I'm excited to get to all the fun activities today.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: So talk to me about what you played this week.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Travis, I've had a killer week of gaming this week.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Excellent.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm just gonna run down, run down some, give some high-level thoughts, and then there's one game in particular I'll dive a little deeper into.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: But um, we had a Tuesday night game night with my buddy Zach and his wife came over for the first time to join us in gaming.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: And so I was stressed.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: I was like, all right, we gotta we gotta show out tonight.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: And I think we hosted a pretty successful game night.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: We opened it up with old reliable, made it onto my top 10 list of all time, Trinket Trove.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Nice, we warmed up with some Trinket Trove, uh, went over well, smooth as always.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: People collected their trinkets.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: I came in last, uh, but it was fun.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: But that got us in the mood for auctions.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: And you know, I found out my buddy Zach, he was an art history major in college.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Do you know where I'm going with this?
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: We played auctions.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: You played uh what is it, art what the Reiner Kenizzi game?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: What modern art, modern art, modern art, yes, yes.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: We I haven't played modern art in a long time, but I you know, I connected a couple dots, and I was like, let's do it, let's play modern art.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: We had the auctions flowing, we had the art history major there.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: And modern art never ceases to amaze me.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: All right, it's just it's just pure auctioning goodness.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: You have one person's the auctioneer, they put paintings out for auction, and the each time each painting you put out has a different auction type.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So it can be a blind auction where everybody puts money in their hands, whoever bid the most gets the painting.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: You can do your classic auctions, going once, going twice.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Do I hear 20 over here, 30 over there, everybody's just shouting numbers.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: It's exciting, it's it's pumped up.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Then you have more classic, like once around type auctions where starting to the person on the left, they get to bid something, the next person can bid or pass all the way around, and whoever bid the highest gets it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Um, there's double auctions where you can put two paintings out, and then it takes on the type of auction of the second painting.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And all of this rides on kind of this like artist popularity system, where each round, whoever there's like five artists in the game, and the artist that whose paintings got bought the most or auctioned the most that round will pay out.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: Like, so if I bought paintings from an artist and he was the most popular artist in the round, at the end of the round, I can sell those back for whatever the value is.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: But each round it kind of escalates.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: And if that artist is popular again, you get to add the value from the last round to the neck the value they had this round, which is super cool.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: But if they don't, if they're not one of the top three artists in a round, they don't pay anything.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: So if I bought a painting from an artist getting pumped about it, somebody got me hyped up about this artist.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: I spent my hard-earned modern art dollars on this painting, and then at the end of the round, that that artist didn't make it in the top three.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: I sell that to the bank for zero dollars.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: So you're trying to gauge which artists are going to be popular, how much their paintings might be worth at the end of the round.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Um, is it worth spending this much money on it if they can only, you know, sell for$10 at the end?
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Best case scenario.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: But yeah, uh, it's fun in both regards.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: It's fun when you're trying to like gauge the price that you want to buy stuff for.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: And it's also fun when you're trying to get money and get people excited.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: You're like, okay, this artist had a great round last round.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: If they come in the top three again, we're talking these paintings could go$40 a pop.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Like ahead.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm I mean, you can see right now he's the most popular.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, so you know, there's that stuff going on with the with the right group, modern art is just such a blast.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so again, I can't say enough good things about Kenesian auctions, it's one of my favorite mechanisms.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: Have you ever played modern art, Travis?
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I have.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think you, me, Rachel, and Mary played it at that bar in like Manitou Springs or something one time.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, that was the card game.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we did play the card game.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I have played the original, and it is also beautiful and large, and that box is just so like oversized for what it is, and I love it.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a classic for a reason.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, it's great.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And then we finished off the game night with about four or five chapters worth of Lord of the Rings, the trick-taking game.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: So excellent.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Man, it was a great game night.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: I I had a blast.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: I think we'll see if they come back.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: I know Zach will come back, but we'll see if his uh his wife come back comes back.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: She's not like a gamer, gamer, but um, she seemed to have a good time.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: She picked up on the game, she was getting into it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: So she wouldn't be the first, she wouldn't be the first person that you've turned into a gamer.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: You know, that's just I that's a point of pride.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: You know, any any person I can get coming back for some more games is just it's just great.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Uh played some more wingspan pocket on Wednesday night.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Still loving it on Thursday.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Played some games with my kids.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: We played Stonk Market.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Wasn't great with three players and two of them being children.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't uh not probably it's like best case scenario there.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Um also played.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: What is that one best at?
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: I would say probably five.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: I would I think it might go up to five or six, but I would say the more players you have, the better it is.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, at the lower player counts, they just you just have like tons of cards in your hand, so it's just kind of unwieldy trying to manage all the trades.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: So yeah, yeah, I wouldn't say three is the best.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Um, and then me and the kids played Venture Angels, which was fun.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: That's a uh not much talked about game head release from the first wave, but it deserves some love.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: It's Bruno Faduti, it's kind of a very light um stock.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Now it I guess it's kind of like angel investors investing in these different project ideas, and every round one of them's overhyped, and that one doesn't sell, and then the ones that do get funded, whoever invested the most in those gets to take the project.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: It's got an interesting scoring thing at the end, but it's like a 15-20-minute game that yeah is it's fun.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can't be like the most overhyped or the one that gets the least amount of money.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: You're trying to be like in that sweet spot in the middle, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Um, Saturday.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: So my mom came to town because it's her birthday weekend.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: We were celebrating.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: We had the Steelers play today.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: I'll talk about that later.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Um, but she came and we played some games yesterday and last night.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: I introduced her to Wingspan Pocket.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: She likes Wingspan, she loved Wingspan Pocket, so more Wingspan Plot Wingspan Pocket.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Played some Lim Space Agency with my mom and kids.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Uh great time, great time as always.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: That was her first time playing, and she she was digging it.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: She picked it up pretty quick and was having a good time.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Then we played some Hanummy, which is the key master game Samurai reimagined.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: And man, that was my first time playing with three players.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And I definitely like it a little better with three.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: I got smoked.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Um, they both they both got, you know, in the game, there's only three victory points that can be scored.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: And to even be eligible to win, you have to claim one of those three victory points.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: I didn't get any.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: My mom and Mary both got one.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: But yeah, with three people out there vying for control of these different parks and grabbing their sticky rices and lanterns and whatever the heck else, flowers.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, it was a great time.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: Super interactive tile land game.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: It was easy to teach.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: And we played some denup.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Denup.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: We talk about it all the time.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Down up, whatever you want, down up, D N U P.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Love that game.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Love that game so much.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: It's so good.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: I got dusted though.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: My mom has been playing on board game arena, and she is clearly picking up some skills that I didn't know.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that game had the need for skills, but I've been there.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I've been rolling people, I've been rolling people online.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Um I'm like almost at a 300 score right now.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've been rolling.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: That's big.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: That's big.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Well, you hey fire up a game with AJ Mac 14.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: All right, let's do it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: See what happened see what happens.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, because yeah, she whooped, she whooped me good.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and then we played uh crits and tricks for the first time.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Ooh, yeah.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: I really I played that well, I say first time.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: I don't count playing on board game arena as a play because I don't pay attention and I have no idea what's going on.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: If you invite me to a game that I've never played in real life before and I'm playing on board game arena, it's just a it's a crap show.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, but for the first time playing in person, I really liked it.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: I thought it was super fun.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: I mean it's cool, way swingy.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Um, with just like the ability to just every time roll a die, you know, you can always place the die as it is, but you can always roll it too.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: So, you know, anything can happen.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: But it's fun trying to draft the different objectives.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, you kind of set the stage for what's going to score you points that round.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: And it's not necessarily winning tricks.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: I like that the different suits have different criteria for winning the trick.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: So the barbarians, the highest card wins when you leave with our uh barbarians, and then the rogues, the lowest wins, the wizards.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: You have to be closest to five.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: So definitely some cool stuff going on.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Definitely more of a little more to teach than some trick takers, but I had a good time with it.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: And all that talking to get to the one game I kind of want to talk about a little more, but not that much more, because it is a small game and um it is flip tunes.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I played this once when it first came out.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: I've had it for ever since then, and I was seeing all the flip tune season two stuff going on, and I was like, Man, I only played that game.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: I wanted to buy season two.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know why, because I played the first time, it was kind of unmemorable.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: I was like, eh.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: But season two was coming out, and of course, you know, I just wanted to have it, so I was like, no, don't just buy it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Play this again and see if you like it.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: So in Flip Tunes, you have this, you start with a starting deck of cards.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: I guess you could call it deck building, maybe.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Um, well, no, it is deck building, it's 100% deck building.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: It's just a little abnormal deck building in the way that every round you reshuffle everything and then flip them up in a grid, and where they land in the grid has uh different effects.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: So you start with these starting cards, they all kind of suck.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Um, you flip them out in this three by two grid.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: So you start in the top left, flip out the card, next card, next card until you have six up, and then the different cards will say, like, you know, this one might give you three fame if it's in the middle row, and another one might give you two for every unique for every unique card it's adjacent to.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And so everybody does this at the same time.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: They're flipping up their cards, you calculate your fame, and then you have a market phase.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: And during the market phase, you can either um hire new tunes to your deck.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: So there's a market of tunes out there, they all have these different abilities, ways to score.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: They're better, and there's better and worse ones.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Um, and then you can also dismiss tunes from your deck, so you can pay five fame to just any of the cards that you place face up in your grid, you're like, this card sucks.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: I want to get rid of it.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: You can just get rid of it.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: So you can run a pretty lean deck.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, for and for half of this game, I was I had the same six cards I knew were gonna flip up every time.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: It just was a matter of where they would come up in the grid and how they might score.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: So I really dig this now.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: I think it definitely pays off to know what the type of cards are that are in that tune deck and kind of understand the different nuances of how they score.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Because there is a little bit of rule book checking when you see some of the abilities and you're like, wait, what's that mean if I have to stack it or flip a card or dismiss something when I hire it?
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: You know, there's just those like little things that the first playthrough you're gonna kind of get hung up on.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: But sure, after you've seen all the cards and you kind of work through that, it's super smooth.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: And the worst part about it is the rounds go super quick, so it feels like I'm always doing this math because you're always trying to calculate fame.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: I'm sure on board game arena it's a lot easier because it calculates your fame for you.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: But I'm like, okay, well, this card's worth three plus another five if it's here.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: So like every couple minutes you're just making these calculations and doing that.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: But I think it's a really fun little deck builder.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Have you played this?
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: I have played it digitally and I have thought about getting it, um, like a physical copy of it.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: But I think that this is one of those types of games that I almost prefer to play online because there is so much of that like calculating constantly going on, or like, oh, did I miss this one yet?
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Did I score this one yet?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: And when you play it online, it just takes care of all that for you.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: You never miss any of your scoring opportunities.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: You always know exactly where cards can go and what moves you can do.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: I this is the type of game that I prefer to play online, and so I have resisted buying this one physically just for that reason.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: I think it I don't know.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: One, maybe it's because I played it online.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: I just didn't love this one so much.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Maybe I need to give it another shot.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: But um, if I am gonna play this one, it's gonna be online and I I don't need to own this one.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's probably a fair take.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, it does, it does have a lot of things that are certainly aided by uh technology.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sure.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I I'll be honest with you, I don't know that there was there was probably times where I didn't calculate my fame right.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: But you know, more or less like when once you get up into like the like the goal is to get to a point where when you flip up your six cards, you get to 30 fame, and then everybody has one more flip after that, and whoever scores highest on that last flip wins the game.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: So when you're getting to like the 20s, the most expensive cards you can buy are like 15.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Um, and does a smith card's five, so you know, it's kind of loose math at that point.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm like, okay, well, I've got I've got 20-ish, I'm not over 30.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: I'm only gonna buy these cards that were seven and four, so who really cares?
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, it it it's it's I do like that it has that that feeling of it's an interesting choice that it's not just the first person to get to 30 wins.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: That you you get that, and then you have that one more flip where everybody gets to take their deck, reshuffle it all again, and maybe you just had a really good draw when you got to 30, and this time you know, the all your crappy cards come out or they come out in the wrong way.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: So it is fun to just see how they come out, and uh you know, you do get a plus three bonus if you were the one to get to third 30 first.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's flip tunes.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: I would like to see like a breakdown of the stats almost to say, like, if I create a deck that I know has a higher probability of winning, but I keep flipping incorrectly or like the flips aren't going my way.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Like, there's gotta be some serious math behind that that I am too lazy or too dumb to understand.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Um and I I'd I'd I'd like to see an analysis on that.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: I if you know of anybody that has done an analysis of the odds and stats in flip tunes, I'd love to see it because there's probably some like really in-depth strategy to this in terms of like how the cards play off of one another, because it's not just building a deck, right?
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Like most deck builders, you build it, you put it into your hand, and then you play them as you see fit.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: This one is the deck is how it is, and then you flip it out in a certain order, and hopefully they're in relation to one another appropriately to score you the most amount of points, and so you don't really get to maximize your deck, you only give yourself a better shot by drafting these cards into your deck.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I maybe I'll give this one another shot on online.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: You want to play this one with me?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'll play it with you.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: I'm digging it, I'm digging it right now, and I'll probably dig it even more online because uh like I said, I'm I I got a little weary of the of the calculating because it is just it the round zipped by and it just feels like most of my time is spent adding.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like math the game.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: So if you know somebody who did that analysis, that would be cool.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: But I also don't want to hang out with that person because that's probably that that they're probably not a lot of fun, or they're like really into meta strategies for every single board game, and they're probably no fun to play board games with.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Well, that's everything I wanted to debrief.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Travis, I'll turn it over to you.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, so we played hooky from work this week, uh, took a little bit of leave, took some time off, and uh we played some games the other day.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: We played Hot Streak, which I will not talk about right now because I don't want to give you an unfair advantage.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Oh come on.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Um so we played that.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: We we played wingspan pocket, which is freaking great.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Um wingspan pocket is it feels good.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Like you you said this the other day, and I I kind of brushed off like, oh, it's just a pocket streamlined version of it.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: But you said like every single time that you put cards down, all your birds are firing off.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: And I underestimated how good that feels compared to the base game, where like onesie, twosie birds, like when you place it in the specific region, the grasslands or whatever, then they fire off, and you're like firing two at a time or whatever.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: You might not ever fill that whole region up with birds, but it feels good to do it every single time with birds that have nothing to do with each other, and like I also uh I also like what was the win condition for regular wingspan?
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: I haven't played it in forever.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: It's just points, it's just points.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you score points on bird cards, you score points for eggs, you score points for tuck cards.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: So I think that is another like another key change with wingspan pocket that feels really good.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Is the game ends when somebody lays out their sixth bird, yeah, and then everybody else gets you know another chance or whatever.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: You finish the round and then it and then you score.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: I think that feels good too, because you're constantly looking at everybody else's flock, their nest, their whatever I think their flock.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Flock flock's the word.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: You're looking at everyone else's flock, like somebody can really be pushing the pace.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: And if you like sit there and dilly-dally and try and rack up points with one specific bird or like a specific combo that you're really banking on, somebody else can push that pace and and end the game before you're ready to score, right?
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: So I think that's a pretty fundamental change with how you strategize in this game because you always have to be you're up against a clock, and that other clock is driven, that clock is driven by the other players at the table.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: So I can't wait to play this one more.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: This one's going in the bag for holidays, and we're gonna travel with this one.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: So
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it I mean I I can't tell you the last time I've played a game five times in this short of time of owning it.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Like I just keep coming back to it.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't know why.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Like I'm not a huge Wingspan fan.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Like I like it well enough, but there's something about Wingspan Pocket that is just it's just doing it for me.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Like that that tight little engine, a little engine that could.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Like I love it.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Well, if you like Wingspan Pocket, I am going to recommend the other game that we played, which is called Reforest.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: This is a game that I briefly touched on last week, but I want to actually talk about it this week.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: So this is published by Board Game Circus, uh designed by Sebastian Bernier Wong.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Artist is Janine Van Fromm.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: And this game is beautiful.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: It's like Wingspan, but with trees and plants and animals.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: And it's it almost plays very very similar to Wingspan Pocket.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: You have a row of three cards that is your nursery, and that is like trees and plants and whatever.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Then you have a row of visitors, and the visitors are animals.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: It's the bears that want to go find the berries, it's the squirrels that want to go find the nuts, it's the you know, whatever it is.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: And so you have the nursery row of plants, you have the visitor row with the animals, and you have some cards in your hand that you are playing into a pyramid that you are building in front of you that represents like a mountain.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you are planting these or if you are playing God and growing these things on a mountainside.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: I don't know the actual theme.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: I don't think it really needs a theme.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: But each of these plants has some different stats to it.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: It has a cost, uh, which is the number of cards that you will need to discard to play it to your mountain.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: It has um the light required for the plant.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: It has the height of the plant, it has points, it has some flavor text, it has some attributes to each.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: And what you are trying to do is you are trying to build this mountain in a way that scores you the most amount of points at the end of three rounds.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: On your visitor row, the first two visitors on the visitor row that represent your kind of in-game scoring or end of round scoring, you are tucking 10-ish cards, I think.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: It depends on the player card player count, but you're tucking a bunch of cards underneath those first two visitors.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: And so you are trying to build this mountain.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: The round ends when the draw pile of the nursery is empty.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: Um, once it's empty, game pauses, you reshuffle the discard, you um give the end game visitor kind of score points.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: The points from the visitors go out to the different players that earn them.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: And then the cards that are underneath those first two rounds or the first round get shuffled into the deck.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: So there's new plants that are kind of embedded in the deck that you're drawing from it that end up going to the nursery.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: So here's the cool thing: uh, the rules for playing into your mountain are you play them in the designated sector.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: So you have three different tiers.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Each plant can grow in one of the tiers, two of the tiers, or all three of the tiers.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: It'll tell you which one based on this little graphic that has a mountain on the card.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: I also said how much light it needs.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: So it either needs full light or half-light.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Those that need half light can be grown on top of by a larger plant without flipping over.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: And they are worth the amount of victory points as if you first play them.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: It represents the undergrowth, right?
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: So those still get to live underneath these taller trees.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: When you play something that needs full light and you play a card on top of it, that bottom card, the one that it was played on top of, will get flipped over and become like fuel for future growth.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: And so it will discount cards that you play to that stack in the future.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: And it kind of does the wingspan thing where it might uh the cards have like relations to each other, like you score one additional victory point for each sun emblem on the other cards.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Um this one gets one additional point for every like uh fuel card or like the flipped over cards underneath it.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Um, this will score extra points if it is on the top tier of your mountain.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: And so what you're trying to maximize your mountain to score the most amount of points at the end of the game.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: This game is sweet.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: I I really enjoy it.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: The art is beautiful.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: Um, I am from the Pacific Northwest, I guess, ish.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Um, and so like I grew up around like the Redwoods and the the you know, the miners lettuce and the Roosevelt elk and the black bears and stuff.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: And so it's cool to see this stuff represented.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's gonna the theme is gonna carry anybody, but I think the mechanics will.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: If you enjoyed something like Wingspan Pocket, this is a cool kind of puzzly thing where you're trying to maximize your score in the same way, um, making tough decisions on what cards to play where and which cards to burn to potentially give up in future rounds to other players.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Um, I I I really enjoy this one.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: I think this one is great.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, I will continue to travel with this one for a long time.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: I played it solo a couple times.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: Even the solo mode is awesome.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: It's it's a little tougher to keep track of the rounds or like your individual turns because you're just constantly shedding cards and playing cards and cycling through the nursery.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: And it's hard to like keep that like hard break and that pacing that you would get from a multiplayer game.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: But if you slow down and take your time and just kind of live with this game, it plays super fast.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: It says 30 to 60 minutes for playtime.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: This game could probably play in no more than 30 minutes.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: I I don't know who's playing this game for 60 minutes.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe if you played it with four and people are hemming and hawn about what cards to play, but I think this game can keep up with a at a good clip.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: And I also think that the weight on BGG at 2.55 is probably too high.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: I know that there's some other modules and stuff that whoa whoa whoa whoa.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Um I know that there's some other I know that there's some other modules that you can add into Reforest to what are you doing?
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Get this out of here.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, just keep going.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: There's some other modules that you can add in that can like increase the complexity.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: I haven't messed with those yet.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: I'm enjoying the base game.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: There is an expansion called New Growth, um, and it comes in a slightly larger box.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: I think it fits everything inside of it.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: Um, I am definitely on the hunt for that because I think it's sold out or not in print.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: So I need to find a copy of New Growth, but Reforest by itself, great game, under$20, fits in your pocket.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: This one's an actual pocket-sized game, and I will continue coming back to this one for a while because I really enjoy it.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: It had me a little stressed, Travis, seeing the 2.55.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: You know, no, no, no.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: That's on the upper upper limits of my my gaming abilities.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: So I I don't I don't know where that complexity comes from.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe if you're playing with the additional modules or something, but what what is that game um where you're placing the plants in the house and you're trying to like put them in the right spot where they get full white verdant verdant verdant, uh yeah, it kind of reminds me of that where you're trying to place them in specific areas to score the most amount of points.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: There's just no set collection like you would have in Verdant.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: But if you if you like Wingspan Pocket, you should try Reforce because it's it's gonna be different enough to be fresh, and it's going to provide kind of the same type of puzzle where you're trying to maximize your mountain flock, you know.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Flock mountain, flock mountain.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Um, I it's a tiny box, right?
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, super tiny.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: It's like maybe two or three decks of cards like smashed together.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: It's very small.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Comes in like recyclable packaging.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: It came in like a little like brown paper bag wrapping, and then the boxes inside that.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, super tiny.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's awesome.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: I'm fired up, Travis.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: I can tell you seem fired up.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: I am I I am always looking for a small box, you know.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Um I I just can't do the the thinky games in bigger boxes.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: No, it's just too much.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: No, I either need a big box game that requires me to not think that hard, or a small box game with lots of fun decisions.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Hmm, yeah.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: I I would recommend this one.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: I I think uh with Wingspan Pocket getting as much love as it has, at least lately.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: I think Reforest needs a revisit from everybody.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: I think it's good.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Let's revisit Reforest.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Let's vote.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Let's let's get to racing.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm ready to start racing, start betting.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: Let's throw down some cash money and our mission objective.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Clay, I'm gonna let you explain how this is gonna work because you are the brainchild, and I don't want to like misconstrue any of your concepts here.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: So take it away.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: Well, hey, I can easily misconstrue it myself.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: So the idea here is we have five of some of our favorite betting games that we've both played, and we want to create a race where these betting games are racing against each other.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: So I am going to have a race, and I've I've vibe coded some a little website that we're gonna do this all in.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: But how I am gonna have these five games race, and it's gonna be kind of like a pub meeple ranking.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: So there's three different categories that comparisons can be on.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: So it'll be a comparison on production, theme, wait, no, production, mechanics, or fun factor.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: All right, and so it'll pop up and say, all right, so long shot the dice game versus downforce production, and I have to pick which one has a better production.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: That game will move forward on this racetrack, one space if it won.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: All of this to try and obfuscate our our biases, um, you know, because at a core level, it's not that fun to just say, I bet Travis is gonna like wingspan or uh ready set bet better than long shot the dice game.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: I want to I want to bet on a race and have his decision decisions fuel the way these betting games race across the field.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: And then at the end, we'll see how they finished and win, place, and show, kind of like ready, set, bet.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: We're each gonna have a hundred dollars to place bets on how we think the other person's race is gonna play out, and the goal is to do better than the other person.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: So um, all of these decisions have been preloaded into the website.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: I didn't look.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: Travis sent me an Excel sheet with all the decisions I sent, and I just uploaded it, didn't look at the file, and so the decisions are pre-ordained.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna bet up front, but Travis isn't gonna be able to change his answers because he knows that I you know picked right.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: So that's how it's kind of gonna work.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Let's introduce the racers and then we'll we'll get into it.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: So yeah, and I think it's important to note that we picked these racers because they are racing games at heart.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, there's a lot of betting slash gambling games that we could have gone with, but if we're going to bet on a race, they might as well be racing games that we're betting on.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, these are some of our favorite racing betting games, not necessarily gambling and/or bidding slash auction.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: So the first one, and this is this is the favorite.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: So the odds during the the betting process are based on BGG rank.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: So um coming in as the favorite is Hot Streak, which on BGG is ranked 296.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: And Hot Streak, for those of you who don't know, is a game where mascots are racing.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: It's kind of fueled by this um auto racer deck where there's a deck of cards that say who moves how far, and at the beginning of each race, everybody has the option to influence the race by adding one of their cards to it.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: Um, so you bet, you influence the race a little bit, and then the race just happens, you don't do anything else, the race pays out, and then you do that two more times.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: So that's hot streak.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Then we have long shot the dice game.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: And long shot the dice game is a almost roll and right-y version of a um betting game.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: So you have these this like sweet little dry race board, and you can purchase some of the horses that are racing, you can own them, and if they win, you obviously do better.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Um, but one person will roll the die, and then everybody gets to take take an action with the die.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Whether you bet on that horse, there's like other little mini games going on, it's neither here nor there.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Um, but that's long shot the dice game.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: And we have ready set bet, which is the kind of real time the race is going, everybody's betting at the same time as the race is happening, one person's rolling die, calling the race.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Um, that's how that one goes.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: Down force is like a car racing game, but you have the ability to move the cars as well as bet on them.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: So you get a hand of cards, and throughout the race, you're simultaneously betting on who you think is going to win while you're playing cards that move certain cars certain distances.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: And then Camel Up is a game where you're betting on a camel race and you have some fun things going on where camels can stack on top of each other and move with each other.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: On your turn, you can essentially either um there's a fun little toy toy toyetic pyramid thing where you can um pop a die out the bottom of this pyramid that if it's that camel's color, it tells you how far that camel moves, or instead of doing that, you can bet on the race, and you can bet on the final, like the outcome of the race at the very end, or you can bet on certain legs of the race.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: So that's camel up, and those are the five ones that we know the best.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: There's other racing betting games out there, but either one or both of us hadn't played.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: Um, the one I I wish could have been on here because it's a uh favorite of mine from The Good Doctor is Winner's Circle.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: It's an older, an older Kenizia game that it has some fun mechanics and is pretty streamlined, but Travis has not played that, so it wouldn't have been uh it wouldn't have been fun to uh include that in this.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: But yeah, Travis, any thoughts on the racers or did I miss anything?
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: I when I went through your comparisons, I was kind of surprised at some of them.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: I I think it's gonna be tight.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: I think it's gonna be tight, and I think this is gonna be a great experiment, if nothing else.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: We're gonna see how it goes.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: So let's start with the betting phase.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: So I am going to bet on Travis's race here.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: We each get$100 and we can place three bets.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: I'm going to go ahead and throw I'm going to throw$50 right off the bat onto Camel Up to show.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: I think Camel Up is gonna come in the top three for Travis.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: It's been an OGN favorite for some time, and I think it's a safe bet.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna put half my money on that.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: And if that wins, that'll pay out 110 buckaroos.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Um for my next bet, I'm gonna put 25 on ready set bet placing.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: And I am going to add that bet here.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: So ready set bet in the top two at 25 will pay out 63 if it hits.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: And then for my final bet, we're gonna give we're gonna go with the favorite.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: We're gonna go with the favorite hot streak.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: Gotta put a little money on the favorite to come in first place.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Um pays out 1.5 times.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: So my$25 placed on hot streak winning will pay out$38.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: Not a huge boon, but I feel like it could be a safe bet here.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: So those are that's my bet slip.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: So I am going to lock in my bets.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: Now it's time for Travis to place your bets.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Hmm.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: So this is kind of tough because I we've been singing hot streaks praises.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: You just got to play ready set bet, the high roller edition.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: I know that that hooked you and you you were really into that.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: If it helps, I did this based off of Ready Set Bet regular edition.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, me too.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: Me too.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: But I know that you had a lot of fun playing Ready Set Bet lately.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: Um Camel Up, we have talked about forever, and I know that you've had some super memorable experiences with Camel Up.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, we have played that together, and you kind of seemed mid on it at the time.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: So I'm I don't know if I'm gonna put any money on long shot the dice game.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Downforce, I don't know if I've ever heard you mention the name Downforce until we did this episode.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: So uh probably not putting money there.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: So I I'm gonna go with the same three, but I need to make sure that I can get an edge on you.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: So what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna put give me$33 on camel up to place.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: I'm going all out of orders.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: I'm just waiting.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: That'll pay out$132 at a 4X multiplier.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: Give me thirty-three on ready set debt to show.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: That will pay out forty-six dollars, also not a huge boon, but I think that's more than you would earn with your last place uh or your last bet with hot streak.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: So I'm at sixty-six dollars, so give me thirty-four dollars on hot streak to win.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: Adding bet.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: Did we bet the same games for the same places?
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: No, I think I I think I had Camel up showing uh that's right.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: So what is like what do you remember what your potential earnings were if they all paid out?
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: I don't remember, but it was yeah, we'll find out.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: We'll find out after the race.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: So stay tuned.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: This the race is about to begin.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: All right, let's do it.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Let's lock Travis's.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, both locked on to the race.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: So we are starting with whose race is this?
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: This is Travis's race.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: So okay, we are gonna go through the 30 comparisons.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: We have long shot the dice game and ready set bet on fun factor.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: Travis, what did you go with here?
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: I went with ready set bet.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: I think getting people around a live betting racing game is great.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: I think with the core game, it comes with like the little app that you can download that like will run the race for you.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: People get excited.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: You don't you need don't need all the neoprene mats and the the clay chips and all that stuff.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: The base game is fun in itself.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game just has like a little too much weight.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: So I'm I went ready, set bet.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: All right, we got hot streak and ready set bet fun factor.
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: Hot streak.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: It is toyetic, it is fun, it is chaotic.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, my daughter wanted to play with the little figurines as action figures today.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: So hot streak for fun factor.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, you cannot argue with that.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: Um, hot streak versus camel up, fun factor.
- 43:59SPEAKER_00: I do love the Toyetic pyramid in camel up, but I don't think it can beat just the sheer zaniness of hot streak.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: So I'm going hot streak.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: Hot streak is out to an early lead.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: You got production, long shot the dice game versus camel up.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Um I don't really I do like the whiteboards and stuff on long shot the dice game, but camel up has the 3D board, it's got the big palm tree that pops up when you open up the board.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: It has presence on the table.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: I went with camel up for production.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: All right, there goes camel up out of the gates.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: We got ready, set, bet, and down force on production.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: I went with down force.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: Uh it's got the little toy cars in there.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: I think it looks nice on the table.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: I went with downforce.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: Fun factor, ready, set, bet, or down force.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: I went with ready, set bet.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: I think it's just it looks like you're at a casino when you're at the table, and I really enjoy that.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: Ready, set, bet for fun factor.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: Right on.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Long shot the dice game and down force on mechanics.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: I went with long shot the dice game on this one.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's got some cool influence over how you can earn your money.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't know if I've seen racing betting games before where you can purchase the horses and saddle them and do all that stuff.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: There's even like a concession area that you can mark off for certain bonuses.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: So I went with long shot the dice game.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: Heck yeah.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: Uh production, long shot the dice game, or down force.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: Downforce for all the reasons listed before.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: Production, hot streak versus long shot the dice game.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: I went with hot streak.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: You cannot beat that production.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: The toys, it all exists in one box.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: You literally pull the mat out, and it is the racetrack.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: You can't you can't beat the production.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: Maybe, maybe with some better money because the money's a little sticky and weird, but yeah, who's complaining?
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: Next one is down force versus camel up on fun factor.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, I went with camel up because I like shaking that stupid pyramid.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's hard to you get excited when you poop one of those die out the pyramid.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: So there goes camel up.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: So at the at the third way mark in the race, we've got hot streak out to out to the lead.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: It's gone three spaces, and then ready set bet, down force, and camel up are both two spaces, and long shot the dice game has only gone one.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: It's still pretty tight, though.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: We're still pretty tight.
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: Yep, and we got long shot the dice game versus camel up in fun factor.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: Camel up cannot beat it.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: Wait, did we just do that one?
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: No, I okay.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: We did camel up twice.
- 46:43SPEAKER_00: We're good.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, ready set bet versus camel up in mechanics.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: I went with ready set bet.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I agree with that right now, looking at it, but I was doing gut instinct, and that's where we're at.
- 46:55SPEAKER_00: So ready set bet.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: All right, there it goes.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: All right, hot streak versus long shot the dice game mechanics.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: I went with long shot the dice game, it's got some cool mechanics in there that uh do not exist in hot streak.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: All right, we got hot streak versus camel up in production.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: I went with hot streak.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: This one was probably the closest.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: I yeah, I like the camel up production, I like the hot streak production, but I think maybe a modern version of camel up could have taken the edge, but hot streak is just too tight of production.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: Uh it all is so nice.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, downforce versus camel up in production, camel up.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: All right, hot streak versus down force and fun factor.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: Hot streak.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: It's too much fun.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: It's too much fun, it's too much fun.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: Ready set bet and down force mechanics.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: I went with downforce.
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: I think uh you have more influence, and there is more of a mechanic there besides just placing bets.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: We got ready set, bet, and camel up and fun factor.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: This is tough.
- 48:03SPEAKER_00: I went with camel up because I think um when the camel starts stacking and people are pushing the pace, like you know, pooping the dice out of the pyramid, people get into this game.
- 48:16SPEAKER_00: And I have had probably more I don't know.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: This one's site, but yeah, I went with Camel up.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: It's a tough race, it's a tough race.
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: We got downforce and camel up on mechanics.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: I went with camel up.
- 48:31SPEAKER_00: All right, just because I was thinking more about like the uh the traps that you can lay along the track that like send them backwards and stuff, the the booing and the cheering and stuff.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: I think that's pretty cool.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh hot streak and ready set bet on mechanics.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: I went with hot streak.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: I guess it's got like slightly more mechanics than ready set bet, which is more just pure betting.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: That checks out.
- 48:55SPEAKER_00: Um, hot streak and downforce on mechanics, down force, because that has slightly more mechanics than hot streak.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 49:05SPEAKER_00: Let's get it, let's give an update.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, yes.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: We uh we're now at at 20, we're two-thirds of the way through the race, and hot streak and camel up are both six spaces ahead on the track in the lead.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, they are neck and neck coming in third right now.
- 49:20SPEAKER_01: We have down force in fourth is ready, set bet, and and pulling up the rear, we have long shot the dice game.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: All right, so we got ready set bet and camel up on production.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: I went with camel up.
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: I think it's a nice production, and all of them are even the base version of camel up, looks really nice.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Long shot the dice game and camel up mechanics.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: I went with long shot the dice game because I these mechanics actually like stuck with me.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: And camel up, I feel like I have to read the rule book every time I open that game.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: Hot streak and long shot the dice game fun factor.
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: Hot streak by a long shot.
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: There it goes.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: Hot streak by a long shot.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: Um, long shot the dice game versus ready set bet in production.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game.
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: I like that nice tight little form factor.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: The whiteboards are nice.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: Can't complain.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: Hot streak and camel up on mechanics.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: Camel up.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Camel up.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: Holy cow, camel up has taken the lead.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: We are down to four cards left.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: We got hot streak versus down force in production.
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: I think I know where this is going.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: Uh hot streak.
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: And hot streak pulled right back up in the neck and neck with camel up.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: And we got hot streak and ready set bet for production.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: Hot streak.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: There goes hot streak back in the lead.
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: The favorites gonna take it, maybe.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: Long shot the dice game and down force for fun factor.
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: Down force.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: There goes down force.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: Long shot the dice game and ready set bet.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game.
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: This yeah, this was mechanics and long shot the dice game.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: Mechanically intriguing.
- 51:13SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: All 30 cards have been played, and the race ended up with uh hot streak one.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: Uh Camel Up showed.
- 51:25SPEAKER_01: Wait, no, camel up placed, and then uh long shot the dice game and down force.
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: Well, actually, it's the tie's broken by BGG rank.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: So oh okay.
- 51:36SPEAKER_01: I think I think uh long shot the dice game gets the gets the show, but we'll see when we go to settle up here.
- 51:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: All right, so I missed a bet.
- 51:48SPEAKER_01: All right, I had I had ready set bet placing, and it did not.
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: Where did Ready Set Bet finish in fifth?
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's kind of surprising.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: I I think that the production uh carried a lot of these games.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Like the top two are super fun to just look at and play with and fiddle with.
- 52:11SPEAKER_00: Downforce has little cars that you can just kind of race around if you you're feeling like it.
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: Um long shot the dice game.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: I I don't know if it's like something you would write home about, but like for a roll and right, it's got some nice components in there.
- 52:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, I do think that long shot the dice game, some of those mechanics carried it for me.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: I I it's a memorable roll and right, I think.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: I don't think it gets enough love in terms of roll and write uh pantheon.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I I did I have played that like maybe once or twice with you, and I remember it still, I think about it.
- 52:47SPEAKER_00: So long shot the dice game.
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: Now, did did doing this ranking or a race like this by doing these comparisons, did it shake up in a way that was different than might have happened had you just sat down and said what your top three were?
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, oh yeah, for sure.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: I because I have I've had so much fun like playing ready set bet, uh, I figured that that was a lock for at least the top three, but then you start comparing it based on like production, and the production is really nothing to write home about for ready set bet, certainly not the base version, yeah.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: Um the mechanics.
- 53:29SPEAKER_00: What is the mechanic there?
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: It's really just placing bets.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think what it definitely helped my analysis of these games for sure.
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, separate separating the actual categories from how I feel when I play the games is uh maybe more objective than subjective or subjective, yeah.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what I was hoping to do because I I wanted to make this interesting and not just uh oh, what's your favorite betting game?
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so hopefully we got there.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: Hopefully it comes across.
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: I had fun listening to your race.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: Let's move on to mine.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: For for those listening, Clay ended up with$148.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: So he is up 48 from his 100 that he started with.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: Yes, we'll see how Travis does in my race here.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: I'm ready.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: All right, we got down force.
- 54:22SPEAKER_00: You want to narrate or you know?
- 54:24SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: Uh, question one down force versus camel up based on mechanics.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: I went down force for this one.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: I think I really enjoy the control of being able to actually move the cars and kind of see what your hand of cards is and what you might be able to influence as you bet.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: I think that's a lot of fun.
- 54:46SPEAKER_00: Uh long shot the dice game versus ready set bet based on fun factor.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: I went with ready set bet here.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: It just is long shot the dice game for all its uh for all its interesting mechanics does leave you thinking a little more than I want to in in a betting game and ready set bet, you just get to the hooping and hollering.
- 55:08SPEAKER_00: Uh hot streak versus long shot the dice game based on mechanics.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: We are going with hot streak.
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: And this is not to say long shot the dice game has more mechanics, but I think the mechanics of hot streak are more fun.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: Like I really enjoy the auto battler race race feeling where you just flip cards off the deck and see how it comes out.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: Everybody loves the mechanic of not actually playing a game.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: Especially me.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's right.
- 55:45SPEAKER_00: All right, uh, long shot the dice game versus camel up based on mechanics.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: We went with long shot the dice game here.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: I I Camel Up is gonna suffer.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: When I was going through this, I kept coming back to the fact that after playing Camel Up so much, it almost felt like for you don't want to take the action of rolling the die.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: Like that's kind of bad, but that's the fun action.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it kind of deprioritizes the fun action.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: As soon as you roll the die, like the next person has infinitely better like information to bet with.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: So that that's kind of become my beef with uh camel up.
- 56:27SPEAKER_00: Does have some pacing issues for sure.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:30SPEAKER_00: All right, uh, hot streak versus ready set bet based on mechanics.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: We went with hot streak again.
- 56:37SPEAKER_01: Again, ready set bets pure betting.
- 56:41SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game versus camel up based on fun factor.
- 56:46SPEAKER_01: I went with camel up on this one.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: Camel up can't crazy camels going the opposite direction, camel stacking.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: Like it's just a it's just a hilarious time.
- 56:58SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game versus camel up based on production.
- 57:04SPEAKER_01: We went with camel up.
- 57:06SPEAKER_01: I again the the pop-up palm tree, it's gimmicky, but you know, it just it does something for me.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: And that in that pyramid, I dig it, and the camels just ride on top of each other so nicely.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 57:22SPEAKER_00: Hot streak versus camel up based on production.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be hard to see hot streak lose a production matchup.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: Uh you you said it all.
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, they did not spare any expenses they uh built that box, and I am here for it.
- 57:41SPEAKER_00: Uh long shot the dice game versus down force based on mechanics.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: Long shot the dice game.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: I think long shot the dice game, like you like you mentioned, it just has the concession stand, it has you know the different ways that you can buy jerseys, and you know, it there's a lot more going on in it than any of these other games, that's for sure, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, but in this case, I think it's a good thing compared to down force.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: Ready set bet versus camel up based on mechanics.
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: We went with ready set bet on this one.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: I again I told you I went, I was I got into a mode where I just could only focus on the camel up thing where where it feels like rolling the die is never a good action.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: So yeah, although ready set bet is devoid of much other than I mean, I do think in ready set bet you have interesting choices to make because you have to bet while the race is going on.
- 58:45SPEAKER_01: So you can kind of wait till you get more information at the end, but you've probably missed out on some of the better payout spots, the ones that don't have the penalties associated with.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: So there is that.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: Okay, question 10, then we'll give an update.
- 59:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, hot streak versus camel up based on fun factor.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: Hot streak all day.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, the crazy, I mean, it's tight.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: This is a tight one because you do have the crazy camels, you do have the wild stuff in camel up that can happen.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: But when you see the the hot dog fall down or the fish swerve out of bounds and just be out of the race, it just never ceases to delight.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, so we are it.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: We're about to go into question 11.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: As it stands now, hot streak with a commanding lead of two, sitting at position number four.
- 59:38SPEAKER_00: Then you have long shot the dice game, ready set bet, and camel up tied at position two, and then you have down force uh in last place moving one space forward.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: So four, two, two, two, and one.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: And now we move on to question 11: hot streak versus down force in terms of fun factor.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: Snow brainer, it's hot streak.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, we can just breeze past the production and fun factor for hot streak.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be it's gonna be a sweep.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: Those are locks.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, we got ready set bet versus camel up for fun factor.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_01: What did I pick with this one?
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: I picked ready set bet on fun factor here.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: I I think uh, you know, I have the the real-timeness of the race just certainly adds to the atmosphere.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_01: Well, camel up does have those fun moments.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_01: I think the the chaoticness of having the race unfolding real time um gives ready set bet the edge for me.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_00: Hot streak versus ready set bet for fun factor.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: Hot streak next.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: Hot streak versus long shot the dice game for production.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: Hot streak next.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: Hot streak versus camel up for mechanics.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: Hot streak next.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: Sorry, Camel Up.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_01: It's it's Camel Up's taking a beating.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: Yes, it is.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game versus ready set bet for production.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: We went with long shot the dice game.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_01: I think again, based on bait retail version of ready set bet versus long shot the dice game.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_01: They pack a lot into that little box for long shot the dice game, and it and it's pretty awesome, honestly.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: Downforce versus camel up for production.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: Went with camel up.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: Downforce does have the nice little cars and stuff, but it just kind of does feel a little cheap compared to you know, it kind of has that mass markety feel, which yeah, is fine.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: Maybe if they would have put like some like actual hot wheels, like something with some heft in those cars, yeah, they're kind of like cheap plastic.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so camel up takes on production there.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_00: We've got downforce versus camel up for fun factor.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: We got camel up, it brings the fun.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: Brings the fun.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_00: That's what they put on the box.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_00: It brings the fun.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_00: It does.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_00: Uh long shot ver long shot the dice game versus downforce for production.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_01: Long shot the dice game.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_01: Again, I'm enamored by everything they get in that small box.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_01: You are not gonna get as much betting fun out of any game in as small of a box, like it's crazy, until.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: And this is I wish I had this, but I've been pumped up.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: Everybody's been talking about it from that Gen Con about Dino Racer.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll have to revisit this.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we should, we should just I have that on I have that on pre-order.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, all right.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, we are now at question 20.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_00: We're gonna answer this one first, and then we'll give that an update.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, race at bet versus down force for mechanics.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: Down force.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: I like like I mentioned, the control of the race and the simultaneous betting.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: It's awesome.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_00: It is awesome.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: All right, so we are at after 20 questions, hot streak is at position eight with a commanding lead.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game is at position four, and tied at position four is cameled up, cameled up, camp, camel up, camel up, cameled up.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_00: I'm all cameled up.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then in third place, in a close third place, is ready set bet at position three and down force at position two.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_00: Down force has not been moving a lot.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_00: No, but maybe it's about to.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_00: Maybe it might.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, we got hot streak versus down force for mechanics.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_00: There it is.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_01: With down force, yep.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_01: I told you.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_01: I like having a little bit more control over the race than that one card that you get to play in hot streak.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_00: Hot streak versus long shot the dice game for fun factor.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: Hot streak next.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_00: Hot streak versus down force for production.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_00: Hot streak, next, burning, burning across ready set bet versus down force for fun factor.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_01: We're going ready set bet.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_00: Hot streak versus ready set bet for production.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_01: Hot streak next.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game versus ready set bet for mechanics.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_01: They went long shot the dice game.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_00: Ready set bet versus camel up for production.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_01: Camel up.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_01: Again.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_01: We're not talking high roller edition, so I'll take my pyramid and I'll take my fold out.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Uh go camel up.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_00: Uh the home stretch here.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_00: Long shot the dice game versus downforce for fun factor.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_01: We got long shot the dice game.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_01: Again, yeah.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: Having so much control, not having die rolling, or that random, that randomness that comes with some of these other games, uh, hurts down force.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: You know, because that that that that really is what creates the fun factor for me is the the randomness, not knowing what might happen.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_00: You're trying to beat the odds.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, last two ready set bet versus downforce for production.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_01: We're going ready set bet again.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: Downforce is fine, but it does feel a little cheap to me.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_01: And it's probably because I bought my downforce copy for really cheap.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_01: It was like on mega sale at Target, and I got it for like five dollars.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: And ever since then, I've just assumed it's a bad production.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_00: The side of the box is all caved in.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: Oh, that was it.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_00: That was it.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_00: Holy smokes.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, so at the end, oh well, hot streak had 11 category wins, long shot the dice game had six category wins.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_00: Race bet had five, camel up had five, down force had three.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_00: So the payouts.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, I missed Camel up to place.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: So I bet$33 on Camel Up to place.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: It did not place.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_00: It finished fourth by oh, it came down to BGG rankings.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_00: Between Camel Up and Ready Set Bet.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: So I missed out on Camel Up.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_00: Uh Ready Set Bet showed, paid out 46.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: Hot Streak won.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_00: Commanding lead 51.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_00: I should have just put$100 on hot streak.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_00: I knew it.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_00: I knew it.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_01: That would have got you$150.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_01: That would have got you the win.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: That would have got me the win.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, but uh I lost three dollars.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_00: Clay got$48.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_00: So I think that means that I owe Clay$51.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_00: And that's the way it goes.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: Dang.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_01: I I rigged the game.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_00: Well, I almost broke even even with the$33 loss.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_00: I almost broke even with my other two.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_00: I'm okay with breaking even at the at the racetrack.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_00: I'm I feel okay about that.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_01: And I I I went sour on Camel Up, which unexpected.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_01: Unexpected.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_01: It was a favorite.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_00: It was a favorite.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_00: After the many hours that we have talked about Camel Up on this podcast, it got what last place?
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_00: Second to last place?
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_00: Second to last.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: Down force got last.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_00: Well, maybe uh once we start playing some more betting games, we can expand this field and run this again later.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_01: Hey, well, listeners, viewers, hopefully that was fun for you.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_01: Because uh I had fun doing it, and I don't know how it comes out on uh on the podcast, but yeah, let us know if we should do anything like that again.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, it if you're listening to this and you're like, they're literally just reading off names of games, you really should watch the YouTube because it's fun to watch the little boxes race race across the the field.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_00: Clay, thank you for putting that together.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_00: That was a cool take on that concept.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_00: I really like it.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_01: I just couldn't get it out of my head.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_01: I was like, what if we did an episode where we bet on betting games?
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_01: And then I just spent so long trying to figure out how that could work.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_00: We should do more gambling on the podcast.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was hard because you had to figure out how to make it interesting and not just, you know.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, I at one point I was gonna try and bring someone else in.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_01: I was just like, but this is what we landed on.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_01: It's what it is, what it is.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna apologize.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_00: Well, I had fun, so I'm not apologizing either.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_00: Wow, thanks for putting that together.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_00: That was awesome.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's uh go over the fence real quick and talk about what we've been doing outside of board gaming.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_00: Clayton.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_01: Got my Steelers shirt on.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_01: Opening day for the Steelers today.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_01: They played the Atlanta Falcons.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't the prettiest game.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_01: But but they won.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: And that's all that matters right now.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_01: They are one-o, undefeated, and TJ Watt looked like he was back in TJ Watt form.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_01: Uh after last year, he had a punctured lung, he kind of kind of fell off the map a little bit.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_01: Um, people were questioning if he still was worth the cash he was getting paid.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_01: And today he went two sacks and then a pick six.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_01: Like it's it was pretty sweet.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_01: And they were all like in one series, it was crazy.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, it was fun.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I still have concerns about the offense.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_01: You know, they they were not moving the ball with the type of efficiency I was hoping to see with Mike McCarthy's offense.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_01: Our boys like, man, we gotta get Tom one out of here, he's a defense guy.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_01: Offense is gonna suck so long as Tom one's around, and we got Mike McCarthy in there, and Aaron Rodgers supposed to have his chemistry, supposed to be this you know, offense guru.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_01: And it just looked kind of blah.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_01: TJ Watt scored most of the points.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_01: Like, what's that about?
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_00: Uh what are the odds that Aaron Rodgers just turns to dust in the middle of the season?
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_01: Possibly.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, he's uh it could happen.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_00: Powered by a hit drugs and blood sacrifices and weird ayahuasca and ayahuasca.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, well, I'm gonna hit on my sports team.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_00: The Niners played.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_00: It's my my 49ers t-shirt.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, sweet, that's a close shirt.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_00: It's a 40 and a 9 mil.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so I'm not sure if you're tracking all this drama, but they played in Australia, the first ever regular season game to be played in Australia.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_00: The 49ers flew out like nine days early to get acclimated, and they went to like a rugby match, and they went to a zoo, and they went to like do all this stuff on top of practicing and other things.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_00: Uh, the Rams, who was their opponent for this game, took a very different approach and flew out like 24 hours before the game was meant to be played, because they believe that it was going to take some time before jet lag catches up with you.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_00: And so they would be fresh, the Niners would be sluggish and all jet lagged, and the Niners just wrecked the Rams, which does my heart good because the Rams requested to play that game in Australia because the 49ers fans travel so well to LA.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_00: So in your face, Rams, you really squandered the opportunity.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_00: So one and oh leading the NFC West right now is the San Francisco 49ers.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_00: Life is good, they look good, they're playing good.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_00: All of our injured players are back for now.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: Um till the substation catches up with us.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_00: But yeah, football season is back.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_00: So back.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_01: I just got so excited.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_00: This has been your sports talk minute with Operation Game Night.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_00: Um, on to on to other things.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, how's your dungeon crawler carl going?
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_01: I've been a little slower on um book four.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_01: I think I'm only a few chapters in.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_01: I I had some phone calls on my car rides this week that kind of slowed down my audiobook progress and my um manual reading, as you would call it, has low-tech reading.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, has not been uh hitting the regular nighttime routine as uh as it was uh before.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_01: Been slipping back into my big bang theory ritual instead of uh okay.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_01: But that's that's something I have been we have been watching Big Bang Theory at night for the past.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_01: Well, this is our our show, like when we're in the bedroom and the bedroom TV always put on a show while we're like you know putting laundry away or getting the last things ready for bed and just to not really have to focus on them.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_01: But it's usually like a sitcom.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_01: We go through the office every so often, Parks and Rec, you know, the the you know, the the heavy hitters, and we had never seen the big bang theory.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_01: Like I'd seen episodes of the big bang theory, obviously, but I'd never seen like the whole series.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_01: So okay.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_01: We're like maybe six months deep in the big bang theory now.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_01: We're on like season 11, maybe.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: Holy smokes!
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm loving it.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: I I think it's uh it it fits the bill perfectly for what I'm looking for as I'm winding down for the day.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I was never a big bang theory guy.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_00: I just yeah, I just hate all those characters, like all of them.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_00: I hate them all.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_00: Uh and I just can't get into it.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_00: Oh man, and they like it does the who is the showrunner for that?
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: Is it Lore?
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: His last name Lore Chuck Lore.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_00: Chuck Lore, yeah.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_00: That sounds right.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_00: He has many successful sitcoms and he's won many awards for his sitcoms, but there's just like something that feels gross about his sitcoms where like they're playing stuff for laughs that really shouldn't be.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_00: Like they had a laugh track on things that are like, maybe we should not be laughing at Penny's alcoholism.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, hey, well, when you put it like that, there certainly are in some of the earlier seasons.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_01: Like the some of I they toned back the Howard character a good bit, but like the season one and two, he was like, I almost stopped watching because he was so unbearable.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_01: It was like yeah, and the stuff about like the way he treated women was just outrageous.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_00: That is like a Chuck Loreism, man.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_00: Like wow, and then they'll put a laugh track over it and like yeah, let's laugh at sexual harassment.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_00: Like, it's it's gross.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, laugh tracks are ridiculous.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but onto a show that I won't hear anything bad talked about.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_01: I can I can hear that about Big Bang Theory.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_01: I'm not emotional about it, but I won't hear you talk bad about Ted Lasso.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_01: No, which I just I just started, I just started season four.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_01: We're two episodes into that.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_01: Uh and I had seen somewhere, and I wish I had I wish I wouldn't see these things because it paints my mental picture before I can experience it myself.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_01: But somebody reviewed it and was like, oh, it's not what it was before, it's no good, they're sputtering.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_01: But I've loved the first two episodes.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_01: I'm like, this is just more of the feel good Ted Lasso that I need in my life.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_01: And now that I work at an organization whose whole purpose is to create transformational coaches that impact athletes' lives, not just on the field, but off the field.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_01: Like this is what we talk about all day, every day in our job is how do we empower coaches to be better and care about more than the wins and losses.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_01: And to watch Ted Lasso now with this organizational mission behind me, I'm like, this show's so great.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_01: Like, this is what we're this is what we're about.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_01: This is what we want.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_00: You need a believe poster above your desk at work.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_00: I do, I do.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_00: You should make one.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I am further along in this series in the season than you are.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_00: And for some reason, like the issues that they tackle in this season feel like they are heavier, like they hit heavier than the previous seasons.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_00: Oh like Ted has like mental health issues and is struggling with anxiety and uh divorce and all this stuff, but like there's like a couple of issues that they address, maybe not with Ted, but um some other stuff that people have going on that just like feels real bad.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_00: So not that it's a bad show at all, it's hitting all the notes that it needs to hit, but like definitely having a uh more emotional impact in this season.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_00: So it is different.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_00: You're not gonna get a lot of the same lovable characters that you got previously, but the gang's still there, Ted's still Ted, beard's still beard.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it yeah, I'm excited to see where they take it because uh there's a lot of ways that it could go.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_00: So I'm really enjoying it as well.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_01: What else are you doing?
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_00: Uh Star Trek.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_00: Still Star Trek in still it's so good, dude.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_01: Star Trek is life.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_00: I am burning, I'm burning through uh season one.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_00: I'm like 20 episode 22, 23.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_00: Wow, and it only has 30 episodes for the first season.
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_00: And I on Paramount Plus, when you go to select your episodes, it says like it's got episodes in order, and then it says iconic Star Trek episodes, and it's got like the ones that you know get all the clout and the publicity and are highly rated or whatever.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_00: And I'm almost done with the first season, and I've only seen one of the iconic episodes.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: So that one um what was the one I couldn't even tell you which one I saw, but I trouble with tribles?
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_00: Not yet, not yet.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_00: I think that's season two, but um I'm coming up on two iconic episodes that I did recognize, so dude, it's so good.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_01: I I mean I I I just am struggling with keeping Mary engaged, yeah.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_01: And I do most of my TV watching with her, like every I I think I watched another episode or two since last week, and I dug it.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_01: I forget which one it was.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_01: It was like episode three.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_01: There was uh, I can't remember, but it was good.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_01: There was some weird guy.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_01: Oh no, the guy got like magic powers from some like electric pulse and started thinking he was a god.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, another girl did, and he was like his friend, and Captain Kirk's trying to decide what to do with him because he's just like man, so many hard decisions for poor Captain Kirk, and you just he's he's a good guy and he's trying to do the right stuff.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_00: I you know, each individual episode, if you take a snippet out of it and just say, like, watch them falling over as their ship's being attacked or whatever, it it's corny and it's weird.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_00: But like as a whole, every single episode, he's confronted with decisions that must be made for the betterment of his crew and the betterment of the mission and his allegiances to his friends and his co-workers and his ship and Starfleet, and I'm super enjoying it.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna keep burning through it, and it alternates between like very serious, like combat and mystery and all this stuff, two weird, fanciful things.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_00: Like there's an episode where they land on a planet and there's like Alice in Wonderland and like a giant rabbit running around, and there's a reason for it, and it's it's explained at the end, but that it does goofy and weird, and then it does very serious, and it like alternates, and the pacing between the episodes is always so good.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_00: Um, I just got to one where they have an encounter with the Air Force, like the United States Air Force.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_00: Nice, pretty good.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_00: Um, there's another one where Captain Kirk faces a court martial, also extremely good.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_00: Um dude, you have to keep you have to keep working through it because I need somebody to talk to.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_01: I I am I'm committed.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_01: I uh it seriously should be shown in leadership academies, you know.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm telling you, man, like it's like you sit here and watch him like wrestle with these decisions, and yes, it's from the 60s.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_00: There is some problematic stuff in there, but also there's some great stuff in there, and there's some real nuggets of wisdom.
- 1:20:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_00: Um, doesn't but Mary is watching Ted Lasso with you.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she is watching Ted Lasso with me.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_00: You just have to explain that.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_00: Like Captain Kirk is the Ted Lasso, and then Spock is the coach Beard, and Bones is maybe I don't know, the the Alice.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_00: How about that?
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_01: Who's Bones?
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_00: Bones is uh Captain McCoy or Lieutenant McCoy, the um medical officer.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, gotcha.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_00: I guess uh Bones is probably Beard, Spock is Alice, Kirk is Ted.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_01: How about yes?
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_00: Nailed it, nailed it, nailed it.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_00: Um, and I I I should have asked you when you did your debrief.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_00: Um, but you gamed with your mom.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_00: You rolled out the red carpet for her, right?
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_00: As like one of our few sponsors of the show, right?
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, I did.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_00: Maybe not sponsors, benefactors.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_00: Yes, okay, all right, good.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_00: I just want to make sure that she's taken care of because she is helping us pay our bills here at Operation Game Night.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_00: Because we are adults and our moms help us pay our bills.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_00: So thank you, mom.

- 1:21:40SPEAKER_01: So the world's your oyster.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_00: All right, that's good.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_00: You laid out refreshments for her, gave her the comfiest chair with the best lighting.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_01: They're all comfy now.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, all right.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_00: All right, just want to make sure that she is taken care of as a as a VIP of Operation Game Night.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that's that's right.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_01: I you know, sometimes forget, you know, I forget that uh in addition to being mom, she is our our biggest uh our biggest uh stakeholder.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_00: Well, I need to make sure that I invite her to our next shareholders meeting so that she can uh weigh in on the direction of the podcast.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, she trusts us.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_00: All right, all right.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_00: Did we do it?
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_00: We did it.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_00: We did it.
