- Lucas: Luna, last time we were at the beach, we talked about swimming. But there's another thing people love to do at the beach. Luna: Oh, you mean just lying around and getting a tan? That's me for sure. Lucas: Exactly. In Cantonese, 'to sunbathe' is 曬太陽. Say it with me: 曬太陽. Luna: 曬太陽. Lucas: Good. 曬 means 'to bask' or 'to shine', and 太陽 is 'sun'. So literally 'bask in the sun'. Luna: I love that. 曬太陽. So if I want to say 'I want to sunbathe', I'd say 我想曬太陽. Lucas: Perfect. 我想曬太陽. Let's break it down: 我 is 'I', 想 is 'want', and 曬太陽 is 'sunbathe'. Luna: 我想曬太陽. I want to sunbathe. Lucas: Right. And if you ask someone, 'Do you want to sunbathe?' you say 你曬唔曬太陽? Luna: 你曬唔曬太陽? That's like 'you sunbathe or not sunbathe?'. Lucas: You got it. The pattern is verb + 唔 + verb to make a yes-no question. Luna: So 曬唔曬太陽. Got it. Lucas: Now, before you sunbathe, what do you usually put on? Luna: Sunscreen, of course. In Cantonese, it's 防曬. Lucas: Yes! 防曬 literally means 'prevent sun'. And the verb for 'apply' is 搽. So 'apply sunscreen' is 搽防曬. Luna: 搽防曬. Sounds like 'cha fong saai'. Lucas: Close enough. 搽防曬. So if you want to say 'I need to apply sunscreen', you say 我要搽防曬. Luna: 我要搽防曬. I need to apply sunscreen. Lucas: Exactly. And when the sun is really strong, you might say 好曬呀, meaning 'so sunny'. Luna: 好曬呀. I can imagine saying that when I step out and the sun hits me. Lucas: Yeah. So let's practice a mini conversation. Imagine we're at the beach. Luna: Okay, I'll start. 好曬呀! I want to sunbathe. Lucas: 你曬唔曬太陽? Luna: 我想曬太陽. But first, I need to apply sunscreen. 我要搽防曬. Lucas: Perfect. You're ready for the beach. Now, let's say you ask a friend: 'Do you sunbathe?' Luna: 你曬唔曬太陽? Lucas: And they might answer '我曬太陽' or '我唔曬太陽'. Easy. Luna: You know, this is really useful. I always forget to say these things when I'm actually at the beach. Lucas: That's why we practice. And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Cantonese, a couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it really helps keep the show ad-free. We appreciate every bit of support. Lucas: So back to the beach. Another phrase: if you're feeling the heat, you can say 好熱呀, 'so hot'. Luna: 好熱呀. I'll definitely use that. And then I'll say 我要搽多啲防曬, 'I need to apply more sunscreen'. Lucas: 搽多啲防曬 — that's great. 多啲 means 'more'. So you're already building sentences. Luna: I love how we can combine things we've learned. 我想曬太陽, 我要搽防曬, 好曬呀. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. Repeat after me: 曬太陽. Luna: 曬太陽. Lucas: 搽防曬. Luna: 搽防曬. Lucas: 我想曬太陽. Luna: 我想曬太陽. Lucas: 我要搽防曬. Luna: 我要搽防曬. Lucas: 好曬呀. Luna: 好曬呀. Lucas: 你曬唔曬太陽? Luna: 你曬唔曬太陽? Lucas: Awesome. Now you can enjoy the beach in Cantonese. Next time, maybe we'll talk about what to eat at the beach. Luna: Ooh, I'm ready for that. Until then, happy sunbathing and remember to 搽防曬! Lucas: That's it for today. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Cantonese with Fexingo.
