- 0:00Hour number two, Millery Condon Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:03Network Trenton I until 2:00 off the bench to until 5 overtime
- 0:07Iowa. Little done hiatus for the rest
- 0:10of the week. No, no, it'll be for 1/2 hour.
- 0:13Oh. It's only half hour, yes.
- 0:15So the Westwood one coverage starts at 5:30, correct?
- 0:18Gotcha. So we'll get to hear a snippet
- 0:20from. Something morning show, the
- 0:22morning show, You got it. Let's get the snippet from John
- 0:25Walters. Morning snippet.
- 0:26By the way, Matt Snyder coming up, CBSSports.com recovers
- 0:29baseball. He's in Miami.
- 0:30We'll preview the championship game tonight.
- 0:32John Trenton, Ken, as always, thank you for doing this.
- 0:35John Walters, you've been calling Iowa State games for a
- 0:38long time, both football and basketball.
- 0:41When you hung up the headset or took the headset off you and
- 0:44Eric on Friday and maybe exhaled, did it dawn on you what
- 0:48you just witnessed? The game that you would just
- 0:50called on the Iowa State Radio Network just how good it was and
- 0:55how many people are going to remember that one as one of the
- 0:58better basketball CT or games they've seen in some time?
- 1:01Did it dawn on you instantly, John, what you'd witnessed?
- 1:05It did. It did.
- 1:06Absolutely. You know, we kind of said it was
- 1:10an honor to even be able to to be able to witness that game,
- 1:14you know, and much less get to call it.
- 1:15And so and I and, you know, looking right next to me, Jay
- 1:18Beilis was shaking his head in awe at that game too.
- 1:22So, you know, if he's reacting that way, you know, it had to be
- 1:25pretty special. And it was it was amazing.
- 1:28It was amazing, the shot making the clutch plays down the
- 1:31stretch, the, you know, the, I don't want to say high stakes
- 1:35because these teams were going to the NCAA tournament and they
- 1:37knew that, but still they wanted to win.
- 1:40They're compete like crazy. And it was just an awesome
- 1:43environment to be a part of. And man, the crowd was still
- 1:47buzzing. You know, several minutes after
- 1:49that game was over, there was kind of like this stir in the
- 1:52crowd that just wouldn't go away.
- 1:54And we all, we all realized we had witnessed something pretty
- 1:56special. Did you open up the box score
- 1:58from the championship game just to check if Del Warsaw had made
- 2:01a three? He didn't, by the way.
- 2:04I mean, unbelievable. Yeah, you know, and what's
- 2:06amazing about that? So you know, obviously he was
- 2:08recruited there to shoot 3. That was kind of his what his
- 2:12role was going to be, but he wasn't shooting them that great.
- 2:14In fact, he had a lower shooting percentage from three on the
- 2:17season than Damon Lipsy did coming into that game.
- 2:21And he goes out there and he looks like Larry Bird, you know,
- 2:24I mean, but that's what this time of year is, is, you know,
- 2:27guys rise up. I mean, they're probably saying
- 2:29the same thing about Killian Tory, right?
- 2:32You know, so it's it's fun. I think it's what makes the
- 2:36makes this time of the year great.
- 2:37Is is the unexpected heroes that rise up in these games, and he
- 2:41was definitely one of them for Arizona.
- 2:43John, you mentioned Killian Torre and maybe that's the
- 2:46biggest take away from that game outside of how great a game,
- 2:48maybe it was the game of the year in college basketball this
- 2:52season. Not just that he was making
- 2:53shots, but he was looking to make shots.
- 2:56I he looked different out there. Maybe you just look different
- 3:00when you're making shots, but there was a more aggressive
- 3:02nature. They went to him a couple of
- 3:04times. I saw there was a couple of
- 3:05sets. It looked like TJ even set up to
- 3:08get him the ball out there on the wing and and give him some
- 3:10opportunities there. You hope that this is going to
- 3:13turn into something we're going to see growth there.
- 3:15But that was a kind of offensive performance.
- 3:17It felt like we really needed to see if Iowa State's going to
- 3:20make a deep run. Tori had to have a performance
- 3:22like that. Yeah, and it's a small sample
- 3:25size, so, you know, you don't want to get too carried away
- 3:28with it. But at the same time, he did
- 3:30look like he was hunting his shot.
- 3:32You know, he looked aggressive, He looked confident.
- 3:35And yeah, it was great to see. And it wasn't like they, some
- 3:39teams lay completely off of them and maybe those shots are even
- 3:42harder to make. They weren't playing completely
- 3:44off them. They were they were guarding
- 3:46him. They're giving him a little
- 3:47space, but they were guarding him and and he still knocked him
- 3:50down. So you know, the most
- 3:52encouraging thing is probably those couple of mid range
- 3:54jumpers that he knocked down. And maybe that's something that
- 3:57he can do is take a couple dribbles and knock down those
- 3:59free throw line jumpers like he did.
- 4:01Because you're right, teams are going to give him that space.
- 4:04They're not going to, you know, they're not going to all of a
- 4:07sudden say we got to get right out on him.
- 4:09So if he can make some shots, it's absolutely a bonus for Iowa
- 4:13State. But he's already, everything he
- 4:16does offensively is gravy because of what he does
- 4:18defensively. But you know, early in the
- 4:20season he scored twenty against great and he came back the next
- 4:24day, scored nineteen against Syracuse.
- 4:25We know he can score and he just has been lacking that
- 4:29confidence. But that was the exact opposite
- 4:31the other night. It looked like he was full of
- 4:33confidence in that game. And you mentioned his defense.
- 4:36I mean, those two shots at the end, particularly the last one
- 4:39that Bradley made, I mean, just full, full marks to Bradley,
- 4:42right, for making the shot because Tory was all over on
- 4:45both of them. He had him guarded.
- 4:47Oh, you can't guard any better than that without following, you
- 4:50know, and that's exactly what he did.
- 4:52And Bradley just brought back so many memories of Monte Morris
- 4:56saying that not against Texas, you know, the and in that
- 4:59tournament setting, you know, when Monte hit that shot from
- 5:02that same exact spot of fade away.
- 5:04Also, the feeling is, you know, joy of winning, but then you
- 5:09look around you and people are just excited because they know
- 5:11they get to stay another day too.
- 5:13And that that was probably the same feeling the Arizona fans
- 5:16were having when that shot went down.
- 5:18But yeah, tip your cap. He's the Big 12 player of the
- 5:20year for a reason. Obviously he knocked out a
- 5:23clutch shot, but man, it was it was kind of the perfect ending
- 5:26for that game. If you were just a casual fan
- 5:29and you didn't care which team won, all you could ask for to
- 5:32end that game would be a buzzer beater.
- 5:33And that's exactly what we got. We've seen great performances in
- 5:37Kansas City that has led to disappointment in the NCAA
- 5:41Tournament. We've seen it go the opposite
- 5:42direction when you go down there to Kansas City.
- 5:44I told myself I wasn't going to let what I saw in Kansas City
- 5:47sway my opinion of Iowa State and then I get right back on
- 5:50board and this team can make a deep run after what they did in
- 5:53Kansas City. Do you almost treat Kansas City
- 5:55almost as a one off? Like almost a completely
- 5:58different season than everything else just because at times it's
- 6:01looks so different than what we've seen the rest of the year?
- 6:04Yeah, it kind of is, although I, you know, that's the way I would
- 6:08say played in those first two games, especially the way they
- 6:11dismantled Texas Tech and Texas Tech could not get into its
- 6:14offense at all. You felt really good about the
- 6:17way this team was playing. But I said there for the game
- 6:19against Arizona, I just want to see win or lose, I would say
- 6:22keep that positive vibe going and keep playing really well,
- 6:25you know, because it'd be such a downer.
- 6:27You just lost Arizona by what, 1617 during the regular season?
- 6:31If you lost by that similar margin in that game in Kansas
- 6:35City, maybe you don't go into the NCAA Tournament with as much
- 6:39mojo as you do. But I think these guys are full
- 6:41of confidence right now, and they should be.
- 6:43And they're hopeier than they were when the other years have
- 6:46gone into the NCAA Tournament. And I think that's something
- 6:49that we forget about. You know, I mean, last year's
- 6:51team didn't have Keyshawn Gilbert Tayman lips.
- 6:54He was really hurting down the stretch.
- 6:56I mean, Kate Kellerman played eighteen games, 18 minutes and
- 6:59in that game down against BYU, that 9692 thriller in Kansas
- 7:04City last year. So, you know, it's it's a
- 7:08healthier team than it was a year ago.
- 7:11And I think it's a team with a lot of momentum of real positive
- 7:14vibe. And I don't see any reason to
- 7:16look at any of that as any kind of a negative going into the
- 7:19post season. I think it's all positive and I
- 7:21just try to go go keep doing the same stuff.
- 7:24When the bracket came out, Selection Sunday, when it became
- 7:27apparent the path that Iowa State was going to have to take,
- 7:30what went through your mind, John, when you saw what lies
- 7:32ahead? Drivable distances for you know,
- 7:36that was number one of my my list.
- 7:38Yeah. And tickets are still going to
- 7:40be hard to get with Purdue down there in Kentucky.
- 7:42I mean, it's going to be hard to get tickets in Saint Louis, but
- 7:47fans that don't have to invest now in an airplane ticket can
- 7:51take that money and invest it in their game tickets and still
- 7:53feel pretty good about it. I think a lot of Iowa State fans
- 7:56will make their way there. And it's a great environment.
- 7:59I've been down there many years from the Missouri Valley
- 8:01Conference tournament. It's going to be a great
- 8:03environment. And yeah, drivable there.
- 8:06Drivable to Chicago if they have to advance, drivable to
- 8:09Indianapolis if they happen to advance.
- 8:11That's a dream scenario and you hope it all plays out.
- 8:14Don't know if it's a dream scenario but boy the path at
- 8:18least to an elite 8 and play to seeding looks very good.
- 8:21Potentially Virginia in the Sweet 16, but before that you
- 8:25got to win a couple of games. Virginia again in Chicago, Sweet
- 8:2816. We remember that one, obviously.
- 8:30From a few years back was Shayock.
- 8:32Yes. I I want to get your thoughts,
- 8:36though I don't know if you've peeked ahead or started building
- 8:38your board, regardless if it's Kentucky, Santa Clara on what
- 8:41you've been doing in preparation work.
- 8:43No, you're getting ready for Tennessee State first, but what
- 8:45you have in the round of 32. Yeah, that's exactly what I've
- 8:49been doing is watching Tennessee State, watching Santa Clara and
- 8:52Kentucky, just getting ready. And you know, Kentucky is
- 8:58underachieving this year by their standards, and yet they're
- 9:02very dangerous with a take a whole way.
- 9:03Why was State fans are very familiar with when he played at
- 9:06Oklahoma and obviously Aberdeen is a really good player.
- 9:09Dubate is an excellent player transferred in from Alabama.
- 9:13So they have they have excellent players.
- 9:16They certainly had the budget to go spend in the offseason to get
- 9:20some players and they're they're dangerous.
- 9:23Team Santa Clara, I really like, I love the way their team plays
- 9:27and Herb Sendex, A terrific coach and Alan Graves coming off
- 9:30their benches, an excellent, excellent player and Christian
- 9:33Hammond, a great scorer, their lead guard.
- 9:35So they've got plenty of weapons.
- 9:37They share the ball really well. They're efficient offensively.
- 9:41They're really efficient. That's a team you'd have to
- 9:43limit their pay touches. I won't be surprised at all if
- 9:45Santa Clara beats Kentucky. I think it's really a coin toss
- 9:50type of game. Obviously Kentucky's going to
- 9:52have a ton of fans there and that should help them a little
- 9:54bit. But a Santa Clara win would not
- 9:56surprise me that much. But either way, if I was taking
- 9:58it by Tennessee State, they're going to have a they're going to
- 10:01have a good challenge coming up in that second round.
- 10:04Absolutely. What is playing in the big Big
- 10:0612 do for this, for this team as far as getting them prepared?
- 10:09I mean, they faced Arizona as recently as Friday, they've
- 10:12played Houston, they've played Texas Tech, they've played
- 10:15incredible competition at the top of the Big 12.
- 10:18What does that do is in preparing A-Team for what lies
- 10:21ahead in the in the big dance. I think it has to help.
- 10:24I mean, not only because you face the level of competition
- 10:27you face, but because you face so many different styles in the
- 10:30Big 12. I mean, there's the suffocating
- 10:33defensive team like Houston, there's the guard oriented,
- 10:36especially after the top and injury, a great 3 point shooting
- 10:40team in Texas Tech. You know, there's there's all
- 10:42these different styles in the Big 12.
- 10:44And I think that led to itself to being prepared for pretty
- 10:47much anything. But you know, with Iowa State,
- 10:50there's so much about what they do.
- 10:51They don't concern themselves as much about what they're playing
- 10:55against in the scouting report as much as they do.
- 10:57Let's go and pose our will on this game and you know that'll
- 11:00be the challenge against Tennessee State.
- 11:01I watched Tennessee State's championship game and it was
- 11:05ridiculous. They could not miss a shot.
- 11:07And this is a this is a team that does not depend a lot on
- 11:11the three-point shot. They hit about 6A game.
- 11:13They shoot about 33% from three. That's not their bread and
- 11:17butter, but they go out against Morehead State.
- 11:19They hit 12 of 15 threes in the first half.
- 11:22It was the best 3 point shooting first half of any team in the
- 11:26country all season. And then he ended up hitting 16
- 11:29in the game. And so it's like holy cow, every
- 11:31day he could not miss. So and that's, that's what's
- 11:34great about the NCAA tournament, right guys?
- 11:36I mean, that is a team can catch fire.
- 11:39A-Team can get hot and knock off anybody.
- 11:42And that's what we love about it.
- 11:43We also hate it when we're on the other end of it.
- 11:45But that's that's exactly what makes the tournament great.
- 11:48So they're coming in feeling great about themselves as well.
- 11:51It's to be a lot of fun. John, you've been around calling
- 11:53games for the Cyclones now for a long time.
- 11:56You've seen what, 5 Sweet Sixteens during your time?
- 11:59But I know Cyclone fans, they want to take that next step and
- 12:02seating wise, there's an opportunity.
- 12:05Is there anything that feels different with this group
- 12:07leading into the NCAA Tournament?
- 12:09Anything that you get different kind of vibes or different kind
- 12:12of health? Anything that you can point to
- 12:14that say this is the year you feel like a breakthrough is
- 12:17really possible. Well, I think it's possible.
- 12:20I will also say that the big, the NCAA tournament, it's a
- 12:23total crapshoot. You just, you don't know, you
- 12:25know, you think you know, and just when you think you know,
- 12:28you don't. But as far as health of the
- 12:31team, which you mentioned, that's in a much better place
- 12:34than it was last year certainly or even the year before.
- 12:38I think you know, T JS first couple teams had to rely so much
- 12:41on their defense. This team is able to play good
- 12:43offense. They have obviously all
- 12:45conference caliber players at three different spots.
- 12:49You know, the bench guys are really productive and and fill a
- 12:53great role for this team. I love what Buchanan brings.
- 12:58I love, you know, the the little intangible stuff that you get
- 13:01from a heizer of Buchanan or Bateman.
- 13:04And so I think they have some of the IT factor that you want to
- 13:08be a team that can go make a deep run at this time of year.
- 13:11But a lot of it's walking match ups and just what I just
- 13:14mentioned, you know, do you run into a team that can't miss a
- 13:16shot? You know, think about Iowa State
- 13:19hosting Texas Tech and Hilton Coliseum, their one loss at home
- 13:22this year, a team that just can't miss even if they're
- 13:25closely contested. It's right at the shot clock
- 13:27buzzer. That's where the upsets happen
- 13:29in college basketball and that's what we love about it.
- 13:32But I do feel great about Iowa State.
- 13:36I think all the pieces are there.
- 13:38They're well coached. They have a tremendous
- 13:40chemistry. That's the part of it that I
- 13:42think it's underrated by people is just are these guys still
- 13:46enjoying coming to work every day and playing together?
- 13:48These guys love it. They don't they don't want this
- 13:51thing done anytime soon. So I think that part of it will
- 13:54carry them and I'm super excited about what they can do.
- 13:58I think they could. They could make a deep run.
- 14:00It's a bounce to the ball, but I think it's possible.
- 14:04You mentioned last year with with Gilbert and Lipsy in the
- 14:06injuries and I'm not asking you to disclose something that may
- 14:09not be public, but for for what we know, this is a team that's
- 14:12going into this tournament pretty good health for just
- 14:15getting through the rigors of the Big 12.
- 14:17I know Lipsy had that quad a couple of games back.
- 14:20I think that's what it was. But he was back on the floor
- 14:22shortly thereafter. This is a pretty healthy team,
- 14:24John. It feels like it to me.
- 14:26And I haven't been to practice since the games in Kansas City.
- 14:30But Tamon is a tough guy. He came back into that game, you
- 14:33know, and that that alone to me is a very good sign.
- 14:37And he said after the game, it's not as serious as when he
- 14:40strained the groin in in Las Vegas.
- 14:43And obviously, he did the same thing last year.
- 14:45So it's been an ongoing problem for him.
- 14:47But it seemed to be a minor tweak.
- 14:49And I was really thrilled that he was smart enough to get
- 14:51himself out of the game right away.
- 14:53Asked the official to stop. That's.
- 14:54Right, he did. Get evaluated, you know, instead
- 14:57of pushing it because when he came back in, obviously he had
- 15:01the confidence that he could go out there and make plays and it
- 15:03wasn't going to bother him. But you don't want to be in that
- 15:06no man's land with that. And so I think with a full week,
- 15:09you know, between those games, that really gives them an
- 15:12opportunity to be 100% or close to it.
- 15:14And yeah, I don't know of any other injuries that could could
- 15:18slow Iowa State down. I didn't see anything else that
- 15:20surfaced there. So yeah, much, much healthier
- 15:23team than it was a year ago going into the NCAA tournament.
- 15:27John, I want to go backwards a week and go to Kansas City when
- 15:32the floor is being ripped up. We don't media guys, we are
- 15:36media guys. We know that everybody has
- 15:38opinions and there's probably, I'm sure a lot of conversations
- 15:41back in the green room and back in the media availability area
- 15:44and all those different places. What was it like leading up to
- 15:47that point and where you're hearing grumbling, where people
- 15:50kind of whispered tones talking about the glass floor and the
- 15:53possibility of a change? Well, I didn't hear any
- 15:57rumblings. I did say on the air that big
- 15:59troll has to do something about because, you know, in that
- 16:02second game against Texas Tech, guys were slipping all over the
- 16:05place. And, and I'll give the officials
- 16:07credit, you know, they could have called a million traveling
- 16:10calls in that game. They kind of swallowed the
- 16:12whistle. And unless it was really, really
- 16:15obvious, they didn't call it travel.
- 16:16Otherwise it would have been a really choppy game and really
- 16:18ugly. But no, I mean, and everybody
- 16:22was slipping in when Christian Anderson got hurt and hopefully
- 16:24he's OK. I think everybody just said to
- 16:27themselves, what are we doing here?
- 16:28You know? And look, I give the Big 12
- 16:31credit for trying something new and different.
- 16:33And it was pretty cool looking during timeouts and before the
- 16:36game and all that. But I also give them a ton of
- 16:39credit, even more credit for listening to their coaches and
- 16:42their players and saying, OK, we got to do something about this.
- 16:45It's probably not safe and changing it, you know, and so
- 16:50the the quality of basketball in the Arizona, Iowa State game,
- 16:54we've already talked about it was off the charts.
- 16:56I'm not sure it would have been if it was played on on the glass
- 17:00floor. And so I'm really glad they
- 17:03changed it and and I'm really glad nobody got seriously hurt.
- 17:07Hopefully Anderson's OK. John, great stuff.
- 17:10Thanks for doing this. Appreciate what you do for us
- 17:12and hopefully you got a lot, a lot of basketball still to call
- 17:16in this 2526 season. Thank you, John Walters.
- 17:19Appreciate it. Thanks guys.
- 17:21Yep, good to talk to John Walters as we check in on The
- 17:24Voice of Iowa State League 20. It's very 24 years since Pete
- 17:30Taylor passed away. Yes, Yeah.
- 17:31And he John called the games on TV on WO i.e.
- 17:35SPN Plus. ESPN Plus, before that he was
- 17:38the TV voice of Iowa State. And then when Pete passed away,
- 17:43we went back on the air at the Jock that day.
- 17:45Oh yeah. When Pete passed away, 'cause it
- 17:47was the afternoon, I don't know what we were carrying.
- 17:48We had a morning show, afternoon show.
- 17:50We had some national programming, but we all went
- 17:53back to the studio and did, I don't know, just 3 or 4 hours of
- 17:57callers from Iowa State fans and memories of of Pete Taylor.
- 18:01Anyway, yeah, it's 1:20. We'll talk to Matt Snyder coming
- 18:05up next. Get a feel for what it's like
- 18:07for him to be in Miami and the WBC championship game that will
- 18:12take place today. By the way, yes, you hit
- 18:15yesterday. Oh, absolutely.
- 18:17You had Venezuelan, your one and only pick.
- 18:20Another winning day. Another winning day.
- 18:22It's been a good week. Well, it's been one day.
- 18:25Well, it's been a good week dating.
- 18:27Yeah, let it know. Okay, now you put.
- 18:29It that over the last seven days we're up 15 units.
- 18:31All right, when you put it that. Way 31 and 15 against the
- 18:34number. You're unstoppable at this
- 18:37point. Well, no, not at all.
- 18:40I got 3 plays of the NIT tonight.
- 18:43Did you so? You got into it a little bit.
- 18:44A little bit. It's not brutal.
- 18:46Did you see the The Crown tournament?
- 18:48I did. See the bracket the?
- 18:4918 brackets, so they cut it down.
- 18:51And you know what, good for them for realizing it and the fact
- 18:54it's going to, it's going to take place.
- 18:56The Final Four games are Saturday before the The real
- 19:02Final Four is. That what it is.
- 19:04And then the championship games on Sunday, I think before the
- 19:07women's game. OK, so they're obviously staying
- 19:10away from those two, but like they realized they might have
- 19:13something here. Worth the shot?
- 19:14I think so, yeah. And it's Las Vegas.
- 19:17We like that. We do.
- 19:18Did you see the blowback on from Big 12 fans that wanted to move
- 19:22the tournament to Vegas? The Big 12 tournament?
- 19:25Look, I get it if you're if you live in Tucson or you live in
- 19:29Phoenix or for those parts. But at the same time, like I, as
- 19:33I said to somebody that that reached out by Twitter, I said
- 19:37I'd like to see every championship game, every
- 19:39championship regardless of sport in Las Vegas with one exception,
- 19:44the Big 12 tournament. The big job.
- 19:46I think it's, I think it's deserves to stay in Kansas City.
- 19:49What do you remember? What year?
- 19:50The Big 10 because are they confirmed that they're going out
- 19:53there? Is it 2028?
- 19:55For the Big 10, football or basketball isn't football going
- 19:59too? I think it is.
- 20:01Nothing on the books, regardless of what Nicole Arbach tried to
- 20:05say when we reported. Are you sure they did?
- 20:08I am 100% sure, yes. There is nothing definitive on
- 20:11the books about that, but it's going to happen.
- 20:14And the and the basketball is going out there.
- 20:16I think that has been confirmed though 2028.
- 20:20Maybe well, they moved it around mean they they've had it in
- 20:23Washington. Did they have it in New York one
- 20:26year? I know they did.
- 20:27Washington did they have? It in Yeah, and they had to play
- 20:29a week earlier. That's right, because it's Big
- 20:31East, right? It was a disaster.
- 20:32Yeah, it was. Here we go, Upcoming Big 10
- 20:35tournament locations. All right.
- 20:37The women will be there next year in.
- 20:40Vegas. In Vegas, March 3rd through the
- 20:437th, wheels are turning. Then the following season, the
- 20:49men will be out there at T-Mobile Arena for both of them.
- 20:53Check football for both so the women stay as well.
- 20:55For no, no. Then they go back to
- 20:57Indianapolis. But yes, both 2027 with the
- 21:01women and 28 with the men will be played at T-Mobile. 2028
- 21:04women going to Detroit? Oh come on, why do you hate
- 21:09Detroit so much? You put it up against Las Vegas.
- 21:13Well, sure, but Detroit can get things too.
- 21:17This. Weekend in Vegas.
- 21:18It's 90° Detroit's in the 40s and it's overcast.
- 21:22It's going to be 85 here on Saturday.
- 21:24That's true. It is.
- 21:25How about how about what we had yesterday?
- 21:28Fast forward five days to what we're about to embark on this
- 21:31weekend. My God.
- 21:32But you know what the bad side of that is?
- 21:35Your wife's. Oh yeah.
- 21:37Spring cleaning got some work to do around the house outside.
- 21:40Screw that, not happening. Let me know how it goes.
- 21:46The Big 10 football championship game confirmed through at least
- 21:482028 in Indianapolis. Is it?
- 21:50Yeah, that wise up. 125 Matt Snyder Next.
- 21:54Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:58All right, 130 Millory Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 22:01Network, Trenton. Ken with you until 2.
- 22:03The boys are at the rally house in Ames today.
- 22:07Lucas and Sean on location. Rally house in Ames.
- 22:10Their program gets underway at the top of the hour.
- 22:13Let's talk to our buddy Matt Snyder.
- 22:15He's in Miami. It's the final tonight of the
- 22:18World Baseball Classic. Venezuela came from behind to
- 22:21beat Italy last night 4 to 2. The final in that one they get
- 22:25the United States and what promised to be just well, I hope
- 22:28it's a good I hope it's a a good baseball game.
- 22:31I think we're we're in store for one.
- 22:33Matt joins us. He'd been covering the vent.
- 22:35He's in Miami. Matt.
- 22:36I can't I've been looking forward to asking you this,
- 22:39especially after last night watching the way the game
- 22:42unfold. It's just different watching
- 22:45this is supposed to the World Series.
- 22:46You've seen you've covered numerous World Series.
- 22:50You're in person at the World Baseball classic.
- 22:52It's just a different event, isn't it?
- 22:55Yes. I mean, I'm trying to avoid
- 22:57hyperbole and racency bias, but honestly, like in the concourse
- 23:03last night after the game, I never have seen anything like
- 23:07that. Just the crowd, Venezuela fans,
- 23:12the the chanting and dancing and playing music in the crowd.
- 23:16Like it, it was like the 9th inning.
- 23:20You know, there's nail biter type pitches in this.
- 23:23There's people playing music in the crowd.
- 23:24You don't, we don't see that. Major League Baseball.
- 23:28It's incredible. Yeah, I, I just, I, I don't even
- 23:32know how much, how much more to say.
- 23:34Like it. It's just an unbelievable, just
- 23:38unbelievably fun. That passion that we see in the
- 23:41World Baseball Classic, that extra that seems to be there,
- 23:45there's a little more trash talking that is happening and
- 23:47there's chirping in the dugout. So we definitely get that at the
- 23:50Major League level. Is that something that you would
- 23:53like to see a bigger part of Major League Baseball is taking
- 23:56that, or is that impossible to do?
- 23:58We're talking about a mini tournament here, played over a
- 24:01couple of weeks, over 162. And we definitely see the
- 24:04intensity that does ramp up when we get to playoff time.
- 24:06But could we get a little bit more Major League Baseball?
- 24:09Do you like what you've seen? And I want to see more of it.
- 24:12Yeah, like over 162 games, we'd run out of gas, right?
- 24:19We did this every single game. But you know, the playoffs, we
- 24:22could use a little bit more of the, the energy, like, and there
- 24:26is, there's great, great energy. I think the main thing is I
- 24:31always just want everybody to be themselves.
- 24:33And like I saw Bryce Harper said like, hey, I love it.
- 24:37I just, I don't dance because I'm a terrible dancer.
- 24:39Like it just everybody being themselves is amazing.
- 24:44I don't think we need to contrive and say, hey, we need
- 24:47to have dancing before every single game and every dugout the
- 24:50way Venezuela was dancing last night.
- 24:53But hey, if there is more of it, awesome.
- 24:56That would be really fun. Just as long as it's not
- 24:59contrived and we don't run out of gas because we have a
- 25:01marathon of a regular season. But it's just, yeah, I mean,
- 25:06yes, I guess the short answer is yes, a little bit more.
- 25:10But yeah, we have to be mindful of the long, long season.
- 25:15Have you been? Is it, I guess if you run across
- 25:19Major League players who were surprised that this event, what
- 25:23this event maybe has meant to them, has that when they when
- 25:26they got there, when they knew was going to be this year, not
- 25:29sure that they went into with the feelings they're going to
- 25:31come out of the event with. How about that?
- 25:34Really. I'm no what what surprises me is
- 25:38that basically none of them act like that like almost all of
- 25:42them act like they knew that this was going to mean more to
- 25:45them and they they've always wanted to wear USA on their
- 25:48chest, for example, and the other countries it seems to mean
- 25:52even more. I mean, you saw the shot of
- 25:53Ronald de Cunha junior last night after the final out.
- 25:56It looks like he was crying into his glove.
- 25:58And that was just the semifinal and they've only played six
- 26:01games. You know, it's, it's and I, I
- 26:05still go back to in 2023, I was in the Dodgers clubhouse at the
- 26:10same time as the WBC was going on and Max Muncie was talking to
- 26:15people and he said, I, I think it means so much more because
- 26:20you're not playing for a paycheck and it's not your job.
- 26:22And it's easy to say, Oh yeah, they get, they take it for
- 26:26granted, they get to be rich to play a game, but it's still a
- 26:28job. This isn't the job.
- 26:30This is, hey, I'm volunteering to play in a representing my
- 26:34country. That just means more.
- 26:38And I think that's what it's all about for all of them.
- 26:40But even guys like Nolan McLean, who's I don't remember rookie
- 26:46eligibility left or not, but he only has eight career Major
- 26:49League games under his belt. He just said, man, I've always
- 26:54wanted to represent USA and I don't think it's a no brainer to
- 26:57take part in the event when they invite you.
- 26:59Why wouldn't you want to represent your country?
- 27:01Most guys have kind of been like that.
- 27:04You just said something that I didn't realize, that they don't
- 27:06get compensated for this at all. I didn't even think about that.
- 27:11I'm sure they do a little bit, but it's just nowhere near
- 27:14right. Yeah, it's, and I, I think it's
- 27:16not really about that. I, I think it's just, you know,
- 27:20they, they already make plenty of money in their particular
- 27:23season. I, I think it's just about, hey,
- 27:27this is a really cool event and we're trying to win for our
- 27:30country. So did you see the reason that
- 27:34Team USA is the home team in this one today?
- 27:36Of course. What is it?
- 27:38All right? No.
- 27:40Get ready, settle in. All right, because both teams
- 27:43come in with A5 in one record, a coin toss was needed in order to
- 27:47determine which team would get the final at bat.
- 27:49By virtue of having a higher ranking in the World Baseball
- 27:53Softball Confederation rankings at the start of the tournament,
- 27:56Team USA was given the honor of getting to choose heads or
- 27:59tails, and they chose correctly about that.
- 28:04So if you're going to go through the trouble of having that
- 28:07ranking, why wouldn't that just be the team?
- 28:09How would it be you get to pick the coin toss?
- 28:11Yes, exactly. I had the exact same thought.
- 28:13But but here we are. All right, let's talk about how
- 28:16the staff's going to go, what we're going to look like, kind
- 28:18of layout, a blueprint for us and what we saw.
- 28:20I saw Mason Miller. If it's a safe situation, he can
- 28:24go. It doesn't look like they want
- 28:26him to go and certainly we can understand why his team doesn't
- 28:29want him to go. But if it does come down and
- 28:31it's a four, three-game, yes, you want Miller in the back end
- 28:33of things. Map out how you think this is
- 28:35going to look as it pertains to the rotation and how they're
- 28:38going to play through with the bullpen.
- 28:40Yeah, so the the pitch limit is 95 for starters, but it's spring
- 28:44training. Mcclain's a kid.
- 28:46He and Mark Rosa both basically said he's probably going to be
- 28:5065 to 70 pitches. So maybe 4 innings, maybe 5.
- 28:54If he only goes four, I think they might try to get a little
- 28:58more length. Somebody like Matthew Boyd, who
- 29:01it's a good contrast to McClain. You've got a power righty.
- 29:04Go to a crafty lefty like Boyd to get to the late innings.
- 29:09And then I think if if all things are OK with everybody and
- 29:14they've checked with every team, that's the other thing that's
- 29:16difficult about this is you have to make sure everything is what
- 29:19is OK with every team. But my hunch is Derosa would
- 29:23love to stick with Bednar in the 7th, Garrett Whitlock in the 8th
- 29:26and Mason Miller in the 9th. So it's probably, if you can do
- 29:31it, McClain, however much you need at a Boyd and then those
- 29:34back three guys. But, you know, it's also
- 29:38possible he doesn't even bother with Boyd and he uses some of
- 29:40the relievers like Tyler Rogers, Griffin Jacks, Derek Clevenger
- 29:45through the middle innings. So it'll be very interesting to
- 29:48see how to roast the pieces together.
- 29:50But you know, if, let's say, the Yankees, Red Sox and Padres are
- 29:56annoyed with him for the use of that NAR, Whitlock and Miller,
- 30:01so be it. It's the Finals, Whatever.
- 30:03Yeah, no doubt. You think Fox has been surprised
- 30:06with the with the results of this, with the kind of the the
- 30:10way it's been received. I haven't seen television
- 30:12numbers. I'm guessing tonight's going to
- 30:13do a huge number, despite the fact that it's up against the
- 30:17the 1st 4 on TRU TVI think a lot of people are going to find this
- 30:20game. What have television numbers
- 30:21been like? And wonder what Fox kind of put
- 30:24out there prior to the term. What was what they hope to
- 30:27achieve? I only saw the pool play numbers
- 30:30and they were the largest ever. So I, I think that, I mean,
- 30:35maybe, yeah, they might be surprised, but I, I think it's
- 30:38been I, I can, I can speak to the, our, our website, CBS
- 30:42Sports traffic, WBC stories have been absolutely killing it.
- 30:46Absolutely killing it. This is the most anybody has
- 30:49ever paid attention. I, I, I felt like coming in,
- 30:53this was the most excitement there ever was.
- 30:55And that's come to fruition with the numbers that we're seeing.
- 30:58So it, it seems like this event, it was always a hit worldwide,
- 31:03but it took a while to get like a major foothold in USA.
- 31:07I think we're the ones that have Major League Baseball, and so
- 31:10many fans still care more about their Major League Baseball
- 31:12teams than this event. But I think it's really growing
- 31:17and starting to gain a foothold among casual sports fans.
- 31:19You're seeing more and more people who don't pay that much
- 31:22attention to baseball talking about the WBC, and I think we're
- 31:26going to tune tonight. So I think we've got a lot of
- 31:28momentum with this thing at this point.
- 31:30No question. And somebody just reached out to
- 31:31me. Will Henderson, Witt play
- 31:33together, therefore keeping Bregman on the bench?
- 31:36Have you seen the starting lineup yet?
- 31:39I have not, but my expectation is that Derosa will stick with
- 31:43Gunner Henderson at third base after, I mean, he hit a home run
- 31:46live game. Of course I saw, Derosa said
- 31:49after the game. Like Gunner Henderson was 7 for
- 31:51nine against Severino coming in. If that was really all he was
- 31:55doing, then I don't know. I sure hope it wasn't just a
- 31:59night at bat sample that all of a sudden was like, hey, maybe I
- 32:02should play the better player at third base.
- 32:04Well. I'll tell you.
- 32:06I'll tell you why, hopefully. He sticks with it.
- 32:08What what this, this event is done for people who don't watch
- 32:11the Kansas City Royals very often if you're not in the
- 32:13Midwest. Oh, yeah.
- 32:14I mean, watching Bobby Witt do what he's done in the field, my
- 32:17good God, he's he's one of the guys that's going to come out of
- 32:20this tournament that more people are going to know maybe who
- 32:24Bobby Witt Junior is prior to this beginning.
- 32:26He's been unbelievable. And that's the thing, he doesn't
- 32:29have the eye popping numbers in terms of like he hasn't hit a
- 32:32home run, for example. He hasn't tripled or anything
- 32:35like that. But just watching him working
- 32:38the good at bats, getting on base, running the base as well
- 32:41as you mentioned, exceptional defense and exceptionally fun
- 32:46shortstop. Like he's one of the most fun
- 32:48players in baseball. And you're right, like Kansas
- 32:51City, not on national TV that often.
- 32:54So casual fans probably don't know that much about him, but
- 32:57yeah, holy folks, he's been so fun.
- 33:00That unassisted double play on the wand.
- 33:05So do I bat? By the way, I mentioned this in
- 33:08a column the other day, but would you ever say you could
- 33:10call somebody the Most Valuable Player in the game when they
- 33:12only faced 1 batter? But Tyler Rogers coming in and
- 33:16getting that double play 1 soda was huge.
- 33:18That was an amazing, amazing play by Witt that he just made
- 33:22look easy so people don't go as crazy over it.
- 33:25So tonight we saw the passion of the fan from Venezuela.
- 33:29We obviously know it's in America, it's in Miami.
- 33:32What do you anticipate the crowds going to be like A 5050
- 33:35split, 6040? Give us a ballpark figure what
- 33:39the ballpark is going to look like tonight.
- 33:41I, I think it'll be similar to the USA Dominican Republic game,
- 33:44which felt close to 5050. But if anybody takes the lead,
- 33:50let's say 5545, I would go with Venezuela.
- 33:53It was ridiculous last night. And there's a huge Venezuelan
- 33:58community in Miami over here in Doral, right next to the
- 34:01airport, one of the biggest Venezuelan communities in
- 34:04America. So they're here.
- 34:07So yeah, I probably around 5050, maybe a little more Venezuela.
- 34:13But the good news there is even if USA fans are a bit more
- 34:17subdued in baseball compared to let's say Asian or Latino fans,
- 34:23when the other teams fans are cheering loud, it always
- 34:27naturally makes you cheer louder too.
- 34:30So the USA crowd is going to match whatever the Venezuelan
- 34:33crowd is doing. So it's, man, it's going to be
- 34:36raucous. Upcoming baseball season, once
- 34:38we get through the WBC, yeah, there'll be a little spring
- 34:41training left and it'll be here before we know it with the
- 34:43earliest full start Major League Baseball history.
- 34:47I mean, it's the big storyline, what we're going to see with the
- 34:49technology and the ABS and. By the way, they need that in
- 34:52this event because. That was a miss.
- 34:54And the USA. Yeah.
- 34:56That was a miss. Is that going to be the biggest
- 34:59storyline early on? Yes.
- 35:01Probably, yeah. And it's one of those things
- 35:02like we've talked about this before at the start of the year,
- 35:07there's always going to be more drama around and everybody's
- 35:09going to go crazy about how big of a deal is.
- 35:11But, you know, two or three weeks in the season, we're just
- 35:14going to get used to it. And then it'll we'll move on.
- 35:17And it's the replay review system has done great things by
- 35:22and large, and they've worked out the Kings and all that
- 35:24stuff. ABS is so much faster, so much
- 35:27easier, so much more streamlined.
- 35:30We'll barely notice it once it once we get it, once we get used
- 35:35to the game. But yeah, I mean, I guess when
- 35:37we would notice it is when there's a game changing call
- 35:39like we saw at the end of the USA Dominican Republic game,
- 35:41when Perdomo should not have gotten punched out.
- 35:44It should have been first and 3rd for cut to eat.
- 35:47I heard CB Buckner was doing a spring training game and he got
- 35:50overruled 3 times in the first inning.
- 35:52This guy is so bad. So bad, right?
- 35:55I'm Matt. Thank you, buddy.
- 35:56Appreciate it. Enjoy tonight, board the way
- 35:59they're not going to move you from the media seat you've had
- 36:01over the last few nights, are they?
- 36:03Wow, That's prime seating. Good.
- 36:05Yeah. Good for you.
- 36:06Yeah, it's, it's great. I'm jealous.
- 36:07I'm blessed. Yeah.
- 36:08Very grateful. And we didn't even bring up
- 36:10Hoosier basketball to you. Well, there's nothing to bring
- 36:12up. That's OK.
- 36:15I bet both, but. If we wanted to talk football,
- 36:17I'm guessing you'd be OK with that, right?
- 36:20That would be OK. We'd let him do enough of that
- 36:21in the fall. He can't be all sunshine to
- 36:24rainbows for vets. Matt, we'll talk to you in the
- 36:26weeks ahead, pal, thanks for jumping on with us.
- 36:27We truly appreciate the relationship.
- 36:29Thank you buddy. Take care.
- 36:31Good to talk to you Matt Snyder, by the way, follow him on
- 36:33Twitter. I wish more people would at Matt
- 36:36Snyder. SNYDERCBS at Matt Snyder CBS.
- 36:41He's a great. He's a great baseball writer and
- 36:44we see what media, what happens. It's clicks, it's click, it's
- 36:47click world. And if you like what Matt does
- 36:50for us and gosh, you know what we do, and he's makes such a
- 36:52difference to our program. He's great on baseball and if
- 36:55you would be so inclined to give him a follower, certainly click
- 37:00on his stories and give it a read.
- 37:02And he's been tweeting out all the extras that have been
- 37:05happening around the ballpark and the seed and in the
- 37:07corridor, the hot dogs that he had.
- 37:10Yes. Did any of those jump?
- 37:11Off. Well, I would eat none.
- 37:12You're not a hot dog guy. I'm not, but I would eat an
- 37:14American one. The American one, that was the
- 37:16one. Yesterday was brisket.
- 37:18Yep, and something on. It brisket, cheese and crispy.
- 37:20Ice. But when you look at the other
- 37:22though, the one right below it, the.
- 37:24The one no. No, that wasn't it.
- 37:26Maybe right above it. The Japan ones, it's fish, yeah.
- 37:29Crab salad. Yeah, no wasabi.
- 37:32Mayo Yeah, that doesn't sound. Good.
- 37:33What was the one right about? The Italian one.
- 37:35That's it. The garlic parmesan bun.
- 37:37Yes, Sliced tomato. Yes, sliced mozzarella.
- 37:41Yep, I love mozzarella. And a little pesto.
- 37:44I'm in, I'll try it. That one's good, but the other
- 37:46countries? No thanks.
- 37:47Venezuela, Onion, cabbage, pink sauce.
- 37:50No, I I what is pink sauce? Pink sauce scares me.
- 37:53I do not want anything called pink sauce and anything that I
- 37:56eat. No.
- 37:58Yeah, that, that one is a definite no for me.
- 38:01And the Dominican one, there's a couple of words I don't know.
- 38:03Yeah, I'm out. If you don't know the words, you
- 38:05probably shouldn't say them on the ring.
- 38:06Or eat. It well take your time out
- 38:10Trent's plays the day they're coming up next.
- 38:12So we've got NIT tonight yes. Are you going to follow up your
- 38:15unbeaten World Baseball Classic record with another play
- 38:18tonight? There is a prop that I have on
- 38:21the list. It is not a official play yet,
- 38:23but we will see in the coming minutes here during the break if
- 38:27it becomes an official play. And then you do have some first
- 38:30four. I do have yes first four action
- 38:34also. Circa Sports sponsors Trent's
- 38:36plays of the Day. Coming off a winning week,
- 38:39Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:42I'm Miller. Condon, welcome back 10 minutes
- 38:44before 2. The boys that the rally house
- 38:46today, Shawn and Lucas to until 5 rally house in Ames for their
- 38:51program and abbreviated overtime.
- 38:54Iowa coming up at 5:00 and then right into the first four both
- 38:57tonight and tomorrow and wall to wall coverage courtesy of
- 39:01Westwood one on Thursday. Bounce around coverage where
- 39:05they call wrap around coverage of the tournament.
- 39:07They're not going to linger at one game.
- 39:09Whenever the action says get over to X, that's where they
- 39:12will take you and you know they'll keep you there before
- 39:15they move around. And likewise on Friday, with the
- 39:18exception is at 6:45, we'll have to cut out of Westwood 1 and go
- 39:23catch the wild. I'm not sure if they're home or
- 39:25not. 645 seems to be a putt drop at 7:00.
- 39:29So Iowa wild rather coming up Friday at Friday evening and
- 39:34then right back into the tournament on Saturday and
- 39:36Sunday, etcetera, etcetera. All right, Trent Condon, I got a
- 39:41lot of picks today. He went and started basketball
- 39:44and do baseball. What's that prop you were
- 39:46teasing in in World Baseball Classic?
- 39:48So I'm looking at NOLA McLean strikeouts.
- 39:51Take a. Just take a guess.
- 39:53Well, I don't know how. How long is he going to pitch?
- 39:55Just in right, right. If he goes is 3 innings, 4
- 39:59innings. Probably that's what I'd kind of
- 40:02anticipate. So let's say his he gets 12
- 40:05outs. How many of them are via
- 40:07strikeout? I don't know. 3 1/2.
- 40:11It's 4 1/2, which seems a touch high against this Venezuela line
- 40:16up, and there's definitely some free Springer swingers in there.
- 40:21Let's do it. Let's make it official.
- 40:23I hadn't done it yet, but under 4 1/2 strikeouts now you got to
- 40:26lay little juice -125 But we're going to go under 4 1/2
- 40:29strikeouts for Nolan McLean can. I stop you.
- 40:32Yes. If this one goes down and
- 40:33flames, you're going to blame me?
- 40:34Yes, absolutely. OK.
- 40:36Yeah, I got I got to look to pit.
- 40:38Of course not. I put all my picks out there
- 40:41every single day, even network November, December, January,
- 40:45February, November, not to remember Awful, awful, awful,
- 40:49awful. I took it on the and we just
- 40:51keep going right back to the world.
- 40:53Absolutely. All right, basketball picks for
- 40:55tonight. NIT grabbing the points with UNC
- 40:58Wilmington. They're getting 5 1/2 at Yale,
- 41:01Going to do the same. Stephen F Austin getting 7 1/2
- 41:04at Tulsa. At Auburn, they're going to be
- 41:07sleepy. Oh, grabbing the 17 1/2 with the
- 41:10Jaguars of South Alabama. So three dogs in the NIT
- 41:13tonight. As always the NIT.
- 41:16It is about motivation and I don't see much motivation for
- 41:20Yale after letting that one slip away Sunday.
- 41:22Quick turn around, I like UNC Wilmington, they got upset early
- 41:27in their conference tournament. I like Stephen F Austin more
- 41:30than Tulsa, who did not look good.
- 41:31Tulsa was really good for a while.
- 41:32Were they? They limped.
- 41:34To the finish line and then Auburn don't think their heads
- 41:37are going to be on straight. They should be able to just roll
- 41:39the ball out, win. That's got Steven Pearl as their
- 41:41coach. I don't think that.
- 41:42Helps. Well, I hope they get beat right
- 41:43because I was sick of listening to Bruce Pearl, who, by the way,
- 41:45I don't know if he should be in that spot.
- 41:47He should. He can't do it.
- 41:48I agree. He has not shown an ability to
- 41:51be impartial, right? That is a problem in that chair.
- 41:55Now going forward, not sure Auburn will be in that spot, but
- 41:57I'm not sure he can. What if they are?
- 42:00Right, exactly. We go right back to the well
- 42:02again, 2 plays I mentioned every single year.
- 42:06I just take whoever's the underdog in the 16 versus 16
- 42:10outright now. You're not going to get great
- 42:13money because you're laying it on the money line on both sides.
- 42:16UMBC, though, is playing in the playing round.
- 42:19How? I have no flipping idea.
- 42:22You talk about something egregious that the committee
- 42:24messed up. It is putting UMBC in one of
- 42:27these play in 16 matchups. This has seven teams below them
- 42:32at Ken Palm. Any power ranking you look at,
- 42:35this was like the 62nd, 61st best team in the field and yet
- 42:39they're in the play in. So this would be maybe the one
- 42:42knock on the committee. Oh, absolutely.
- 42:43By by by all accounts, they were universally praised.
- 42:47This is pretty egregious. So just for comparison, UMBC is
- 42:51185 teams below them. Tennessee State, well, Iowa
- 42:54State will play Furman, Sienna, Howard and Liu, all teams at Ken
- 43:00Pomeroy that are below them. Yet here they are playing in to
- 43:04get into the bracket by the one. Texas stinks.
- 43:07NC State got on hard times. I just think they're better.
- 43:09I don't believe in Sean Miller's squad.
- 43:11So in the cheater bowl tonight I will take Will Wade and a strong
- 43:17ass offer -1 1/2. Baseball.
- 43:20You found it. Just that one prop.
- 43:22Just. Doing the one prop good.
- 43:23Stuff. Too big of a price on the money
- 43:25line for you? And -280 yeah, surprise, too.
- 43:28That's going to do it for us. The boys are at the Rally House
- 43:30off the bench. Coming up next, we're Miller and
- 43:31Condon. Trent and I talk sports with you
- 43:33Monday through Friday from noon until 2.
- 43:35Thanks for being with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
