- 0:01The Dhammapada provides the spiritual seeker with a deep
- 0:04wisdom that forces us to reflect and gain understanding.
- 0:09The Mother has taken up a particular verse about the harm
- 0:13caused by a mind that is not tightly focused and under
- 0:16control. With some consideration, we can
- 0:20understand the deeper intent. When an individual focuses on
- 0:25defeating or harming an enemy, that action is tightly
- 0:29concentrated and directed, thus limiting most of the harm to the
- 0:33enemy. The fact that an enemy is
- 0:35acknowledged also implies that the enemy knows about the
- 0:39animosity and will take appropriate measures in defense.
- 0:44Thus, the two antagonists may injure one another or may
- 0:48neutralize one another, but the scope and harm is more or less
- 0:52circumscribed within the limits of their focus.
- 0:56The same can be said about a hater acting against another
- 0:59hater. In both of these examples, the
- 1:02scope, focus, and intensity are all tightly controlled and
- 1:08limited for the most part to each other.
- 1:12We turn then to the other part of the aphorism that the quote
- 1:16harm caused by a misdirected mind is even greater still.
- 1:20End Quote. A misdirected mind, very much
- 1:24unmanaged and uncontrolled, is not restricted to creating
- 1:28issues for an enemy or a mutual hater, but can go out to loved
- 1:33ones, friends or others in the community and cause substantial
- 1:38issues of pain and suffering, confusion and misunderstanding,
- 1:42all of which can spread and continue inflicting pain.
- 1:47Just as it is said that one should monitor one's speech
- 1:50carefully to not cause undue pain to others and to make it
- 1:55all so truthful and based in a balanced and complete
- 1:59understanding so as to not create disharmony or disruptions
- 2:03needlessly. So the mind, which both sends
- 2:07out vibrations without the use of speech as well as through
- 2:11speech or the written word, needs to be similarly understood
- 2:16and managed. We cannot foresee where these
- 2:19thoughts will wind up and what effects they will have.
- 2:23The thought form so created will have their impact, even if not
- 2:28consciously directed or intended.
- 2:31We already recognize the negative impact that even
- 2:34thoughtless comments can have on someone, particularly if that
- 2:38individual is seeking for acceptance and developing of
- 2:42individual self worth. How many young children have
- 2:45been negatively impacted through their whole lives by a parent
- 2:49telling them that they are failures or incompetent, rather
- 2:53than working to find ways for the child to thrive within its
- 2:56own sphere of interest and capacity?
- 2:59How many people with unique capacities and talents have been
- 3:03discouraged by stray remarks from family or peers from
- 3:08developing those capacities? The effects of the unfocused or
- 3:12misdirected mind are wide-ranging.
- 3:16Another generally unappreciated aspect is that a misdirected
- 3:21mind may cause harm to oneself, which we frequently observe when
- 3:25people tell themselves that they are weak, incompetent, ugly, old
- 3:31or other such self demeaning ideas that in fact lead to
- 3:35harming their mental, emotional, vital and physical health and
- 3:40well-being. A misdirected mind can also lead
- 3:44to waste and loss of time and focus and all of the
- 3:48consequences that flow from that.
- 3:50We see many instances where someone concentrates on social
- 3:54media or playing video games and winds up unable to make their
- 3:58way within their social and economic setting later in their
- 4:01lives, whereas had they been gently guided and thereby
- 4:06directed their minds towards positive and productive affairs,
- 4:11they would reduce their later chances of suffering from
- 4:14failure. How much friction is created by
- 4:17minds focused on short term annoyances or inconveniences
- 4:22rather than on the bigger issues of life?
- 4:26Much of modern society purposely works to create distraction, and
- 4:31a mind that is carried away by those distractions tends to
- 4:34become trapped in relatively meaningless pursuits or
- 4:38disputes, while not using their time to create a life of meaning
- 4:43and real value to themselves and others.
- 4:47The use of misdirection is a major element of societal
- 4:51control. This becomes a mechanism to
- 4:54gather the financial wealth of the people so ensnared, as well
- 4:58as subordinate them, in many cases against their own true
- 5:02interests, to political or religious control and
- 5:07domination. For the spiritual seeker, of
- 5:10course, the stakes are even higher.
- 5:13Losing focus on the real spiritual development and
- 5:17misplacing the time and attention on seeking after fame,
- 5:21wealth, sex, power, et cetera, has been the downfall of many
- 5:28seekers overtime, the Damapata states.
- 5:32Quote whatever an enemy may do to an enemy.
- 5:37Whatever a hater may do to a hater.
- 5:40The harm caused by a misdirected mind is even greater still.
- 5:45End Quote. The mother comments quote an
- 5:50I'll directed I'll. Controlled thought does more
- 5:52harm than an enemy can do to an enemy or a hater to a hater.
- 5:57That is to say, even those who have the best intentions in the
- 6:01world, if they do not have a wise control over their thought,
- 6:06will do more harm to themselves and to those whom they love than
- 6:11an enemy can do to an enemy or a hater to a hater.
