- 0:00Hi, everyone, and welcome to our latest edition of the Yukon Women's Basketball
- 0:04Coaches Show for show viere with head coach Gino oriam As. The Husky's coming
- 0:08off a really good start to counter twenty twenty four, and we'll throw in
- 0:11New Year's Eve as well with wins over Marquette, Creighton, and Georgetown.
- 0:17And yes, we'll talk about Aubert Griffin's injury as well with Gino in a
- 0:21little bit. But r boy, your team is in a really good spot.
- 0:23And I know we just met with the media as we're recording this.
- 0:26It seems like this team has found its identity. Yeah. Yeah, that's
- 0:31what we talked about as a team, that we needed to find who we
- 0:35are and play to that identity every night if we can. And my feeling
- 0:41right now is if we can keep playing to that, play fast, take
- 0:47advantage of our quickness, minimize the lack of height that we have a lot
- 0:53of times in our lineup. Whatever teams do to us that's difficult for us,
- 1:00we can do to them that's difficult for them. So our defensive identity
- 1:04has started to establish itself. You know, this is how we play,
- 1:07this is our game plan. How you know ball pressure. I like it.
- 1:14I like where we are, and I like the fact that the team
- 1:15has embraced it for the most part. Yeah, and you also mentioned too
- 1:19early in the season you get behind or shoot the ball well, and suddenly
- 1:23it doesn't start going to the hoop and they get down to themselves. Well,
- 1:26two of the last three games, the opposition's gotten off to a good
- 1:30start, but it hasn't changed a thing. And then you get rolling and
- 1:32it's it's all over on both ends of the floor. Yeah, the mark
- 1:37That game and the Georgetown game, you know, then start off obviously ideally,
- 1:47you know, we love to start every game like we started the Creating
- 1:49game, right, But unfortunately that's not always the case. So you've got
- 1:55to be able to you know, again, just like our team, you
- 2:00got to be able to take advantage and maximize when you're on a roll and
- 2:05be able to hang in there and which stand when the other team's on a
- 2:09little bit of a run. And I think we're getting really really good at
- 2:14that for sure. Yeah, and the Craning game, I mean, you
- 2:16know, it's funny we were talking about the numbers of their core four in
- 2:20the previous games against you Kun not very good. Well, that trend continued,
- 2:23and I think it's because a the quickness of the defense, but they
- 2:28also you force. Your hope is to force teams to take bad shots or
- 2:30the shots they don't want to take, and it seemed like Creighton got into
- 2:35that rut quite a bit, and they have been in the past against you
- 2:38Cunn. You know, the big thing about Creighton is you need them to
- 2:44miss open shots. All right, you can do whatever you want pressure,
- 2:51force them to take rush shots, but the bottom line is they're really good
- 2:54and they're going to get X number of open shots. You have to hope
- 2:59that by making things a little bit quicker for them, making them rush just
- 3:05a little bit, that not only does it effect the contested shots that they
- 3:12take because of your pressure, but it has a residual effect on some of
- 3:19the open shots don't go in sure, And that to me is you know,
- 3:23has been the key with with Creighton. You know, we played them
- 3:29here at Gample when they made all those open shots, and it was really
- 3:31hard, really hard. So they're you know, hey, we could play
- 3:38them here at our place and be completely the other way around. Who the
- 3:42heck knows, But I thought I thought the Marquette. The Louisville Marquette Creaton
- 3:47games were three of our best efforts both ends of the year, for sure,
- 3:53and probably the most physical game was probably sunning. It always is,
- 4:00always is every time we played Georgetown. There is a physicality to the game.
- 4:10There's a lot of misshots. They're traditionally a very very very good defensive
- 4:17team. They make it they try to make it up a game that turns
- 4:28a little bit ugly from you know, it's not going to be pretty basketball,
- 4:34and it serves them well. You know, they're twelve and three,
- 4:39so again overcoming that and you know, we got up twenty in the second
- 4:46half and go, oh we're up twenty. Now it's going to be just
- 4:48all the other games. Now we're going to get up thirty and then it's
- 4:50going to be forty. Yeah yah yeah dah yeah. And then it went
- 4:54from twenty to twelve. And that's the way they play, you know.
- 4:57And I was really proud of the we came out in the third quarter because
- 5:00we played We made them play the way we wanted them to play. That
- 5:03was the biggest thing. Yeah. And the other thing too, you made
- 5:08them pay for every turnover team like and you only turn the ball over eight
- 5:11times. Yeah, yeah, no, I thought we capitalized on their turnover.
- 5:15There's a couple of things that we've talked about. Right. We have
- 5:18to win the three point battle, so we have to score more points from
- 5:21the three point line than you do. We have to shoot more free throws
- 5:25than you do and score more free throws than you do. And we have
- 5:29to win the rebounding battle if we can't, or at least break even.
- 5:32And two out of the three we got those things done three out of three
- 5:34against Marquette and three out of three against Creighton and two out of three against
- 5:41Georgetown. We didn't have a really good day on the backboard. But if
- 5:45we can keep striving for those three things, you know, we're not always
- 5:50going to come out on top. But I like our chances. Yeah.
- 5:54And you know, yes, you have broken the ten made threes three times
- 5:58this season. But right now, now, during this stretch, you're making
- 6:01seven to ten threes a game. That's not exactly a bad number, No
- 6:06it's not. And this day you tell me we're gonna take twenty five every
- 6:12game where we're gonna go ten for twenty five? Okay, where I like
- 6:15it to be you know, twelve or thirteen for twenty five. Sure every
- 6:20coach would, but it's ten for twenty five. It's still thirty points on
- 6:28twenty five shots. The key, I also think is the fifteen that we
- 6:33miss. Those are long rebounds, So how many of those can we recover
- 6:40and get another shot at it? And if we're quicker to the ball,
- 6:46you know we might be able to do that. Right more Gito is the
