- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on everyone? Welcome into another edition of
- 0:13Speaker 1: the czech Odaily. It's Andrew de Checo, Eagles Beat reporter
- 0:17Speaker 1: Friendsidethebirds dot Com, and I'm recording this podcast live from
- 0:21Speaker 1: SOFI Stadium in Inglewood, California, as the Eagles fall to
- 0:26Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Chargers by a score of twenty two
- 0:29Speaker 1: to nineteen in a game that pretty much featured just
- 0:33Speaker 1: about everything you could think of. But let's get to
- 0:36Speaker 1: the extra period here, because this was the first time
- 0:40Speaker 1: that the Eagles were able to have a game and
- 0:44Speaker 1: that went to overtime that they were playing under the
- 0:46Speaker 1: new rules, which means that each team had a chance
- 0:49Speaker 1: to possess.
- 0:50Speaker 2: The football, and.
- 0:53Speaker 1: So they were noted at nineteen at the end of
- 0:55Speaker 1: regulation and the game extended into overtime. So I talked
- 1:00Speaker 1: about that was the first opportunity the Eagles had to
- 1:02Speaker 1: play under the new rules. The Eagles called heads in
- 1:06Speaker 1: one and they elected to kick. The Chargers drove thirty
- 1:09Speaker 1: four yards on six plays, but the offense stalled, resulting
- 1:13Speaker 1: in a fifty four yard Cameron Dicker kicked to move ahead.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Then the Eagles possessed the football at the thirty one
- 1:22Speaker 1: yard line. But then a failed third and four attempt
- 1:25Speaker 1: to wide receiver a j Brown down the left sideline
- 1:28Speaker 1: set up a fourth and four with three twenty three
- 1:30Speaker 1: left to play in the extra period. Then a neutral
- 1:34Speaker 1: zone infraction afforded the Eagles a first down. The Eagles
- 1:37Speaker 1: appeared to be driving for the game winning touchdown, but
- 1:40Speaker 1: Jalen Hurt's throw to wide receiver Johan Dotson was deflected
- 1:44Speaker 1: by cornerback Cam Hart and picked off by safety Tony
- 1:47Speaker 1: Jefferson to steal the game. Hertz tossed a career high
- 1:51Speaker 1: four interceptions in this one, and he was also responsible
- 1:55Speaker 1: for a lost fumble. While things appeared bleak following the
- 1:59Speaker 1: Hurt fourth the Hurts fourth quarter interception too hard. Jake
- 2:03Speaker 1: Elliott answered the Chargers thirty one yard field goal with
- 2:07Speaker 1: the connection of his own from forty four yards out
- 2:09Speaker 1: to give the Eagles a nineteen to sixteen lead, and
- 2:13Speaker 1: it appeared that the battle of attrition upfront for the
- 2:15Speaker 1: Chargers was enough to stall Drives at the end drive
- 2:19Speaker 1: short of the end zone, but Dicker drilled a forty
- 2:21Speaker 1: six yard field goal with twelve seconds remaining to draw.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Even at nineteen to send the game into overtime.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Heurtz completed twenty one to forty pass attempts for two
- 2:31Speaker 1: hundred and forty yards and four interceptions. Running Back Saquon
- 2:34Speaker 1: Barkley turned out one hundred and twenty two rushing yards
- 2:36Speaker 1: on twenty carries. Real quickly, before we get into the game,
- 2:41Speaker 1: breakdown some of my takeaways. Inactive for the Eagles outside
- 2:45Speaker 1: linebacker josh Ushe, quarterback Sam Howell, cornerback Mac McWilliams, running
- 2:49Speaker 1: back AJ Dillon, right tackle Lane Johnson, and defensive tackle
- 2:53Speaker 1: Jalen Carter.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Ahead of Tonight's game or Monday's game, the.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Eagles activated safety Marcus EPs from injury reserve and elevated
- 3:00Speaker 1: safety Andre Sam from the practice squad. Epps takes the
- 3:03Speaker 1: roster spot previously occupied by wide receiver Xavier Gibson, who
- 3:07Speaker 1: was waived on Sunday. For Sam, Monday's game marked his
- 3:11Speaker 1: second elevation of the season. Okay, let's get into some
- 3:14Speaker 1: of these observations. The Chargers won the opening toss and
- 3:19Speaker 1: they elected to defer, and it brought the Eagles offense
- 3:23Speaker 1: up first. They opened with an empty backfield with Barkley
- 3:26Speaker 1: alliance of a left the running game stalled at first
- 3:29Speaker 1: glance with Barkley gaining only three yards on two carries,
- 3:32Speaker 1: but it picked up obviously taekwon eclipsing the one hundred
- 3:36Speaker 1: yard threshold there is great for the Eagles. Then there
- 3:41Speaker 1: was a nine yard sack taken by Hers on a
- 3:43Speaker 1: third and four, but on that play, running back Tank Bigsby,
- 3:47Speaker 1: who got a pair of snaps on the opening drive,
- 3:51Speaker 1: was aligned out wide to the right.
- 3:52Speaker 2: There were some positives for the ground game thereafter.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And I think it's important to note that Tank Bigsby
- 3:57Speaker 1: n will Shipley, as they sort of alluded to going
- 4:00Speaker 1: into this game, had roles and Diggsby only had one
- 4:04Speaker 1: carry for four yards. Will Shipley had one reception in
- 4:07Speaker 1: this game, but the Eagles did work them into the
- 4:09Speaker 1: rotation and get them on the field. And I thought
- 4:12Speaker 1: it was notable that Tank Bigsby was at times aligned
- 4:15Speaker 1: as a receiver. So they're getting a little bit more
- 4:18Speaker 1: creative with Nick Sirianni helping Kevin Patulo in the game plan.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Kevin Patullo, by the way, still calling plays.
- 4:24Speaker 1: The Eagles still fell short, but there were opportunities in
- 4:27Speaker 1: this game to make plays. Marcus Epps started the game
- 4:32Speaker 1: at safety for the Eagles as expected, Justin Herbert and
- 4:36Speaker 1: the Chargers offense and made good use of the defensive stop,
- 4:39Speaker 1: but it led to a six play, eighty yard march
- 4:42Speaker 1: that was fueled by a sixty yard catch and run
- 4:45Speaker 1: down the left sideline from Herbert to running back Commani Vitel.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Based off the initial watch, it looked like Vitel put
- 4:52Speaker 1: the Eagles second level in flux, but Amari and Hampton,
- 4:55Speaker 1: the other piece of the one to two punch, rilled
- 4:57Speaker 1: in a four yard touchdown on the drive.
- 4:59Speaker 2: That cover two minutes and forty nine seconds.
- 5:02Speaker 1: The Chargers would it would be tough sledding for them
- 5:04Speaker 1: for the remainder of the game. They could not punch
- 5:06Speaker 1: the ball in and the offensive line they were down
- 5:10Speaker 1: to their third right tackle after Trey Pipkins, the second string,
- 5:15Speaker 1: left the game injured did not return, so they're in
- 5:18Speaker 1: shambles there. Justin Herbert I can't say enough about the
- 5:21Speaker 1: way that he played tough, putting the game in his
- 5:25Speaker 1: hands when he was playing the game with a fracture
- 5:27Speaker 1: he had just had surgery on it a week ago,
- 5:30Speaker 1: calling his own number and just doing whatever he could
- 5:33Speaker 1: to extend drive, especially when the offensive line was breaking down,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and the Eagles defense did a tremendous job bottling up
- 5:41Speaker 1: Kamani vital and Amari and Hampton a week or longer
- 5:44Speaker 1: than a week, but after getting gashed by the Chicago Bears,
- 5:48Speaker 1: which has been well documented at this point, but this
- 5:50Speaker 1: defense almost like they sensed blood in the water and
- 5:53Speaker 1: they did a fantastic job of doing their part to
- 5:57Speaker 1: try and keep the offense in the game long enough,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and unfortunately they weren't able to do it. The Eagles
- 6:03Speaker 1: offense did not answer the bell in this one, but
- 6:07Speaker 1: to help offset the absence of defensive tackle Jalen Carter,
- 6:10Speaker 1: the Eagles used Brandon Graham and Jalen Phillips inside at times,
- 6:15Speaker 1: particularly Graham aligned inside on the Hampton touchdown and Phillips
- 6:19Speaker 1: on the free play that resulted from an offside penalty
- 6:21Speaker 1: called on defensive tackle Moro Jomo, which wiped away a
- 6:25Speaker 1: Cooper Degene interception. Rookie ty Robinson worked in as well,
- 6:29Speaker 1: but it was notable to see Vic vangel Of mixing
- 6:31Speaker 1: and matching his interior personnel.
- 6:35Speaker 2: This was a really tough adding for Jayalen Hurts, who
- 6:37Speaker 2: struggled seeing the field.
- 6:38Speaker 1: The raigning Super Bowl MVP frequently appeared flustered and merely
- 6:42Speaker 1: didn't see open receivers. On a third and five from
- 6:45Speaker 1: the Eagles fifteen in the second quarter, it appeared Hurts
- 6:47Speaker 1: tossed an interception to Charger safety RJ. Mickens, but it
- 6:50Speaker 1: was determined the ball hit the ground, so the Eagles
- 6:52Speaker 1: instead were forced to punt. Later in the quarter, on
- 6:55Speaker 1: a third and two on the Chargers twenty one, Hurts
- 6:58Speaker 1: threw an interception over them to a defensive lineman to
- 7:01Speaker 1: sean hand on a perfectly executed simp pressure. Then Eagles
- 7:05Speaker 1: running back Will Shipley forced the fumble on the tackle
- 7:08Speaker 1: recovered by Hurtz, who then had it jarred Lewis by
- 7:11Speaker 1: defensive lineman Jamari called Well, and then linebacker Troy Die
- 7:16Speaker 1: recovered it for the Chargers, so Hurts was officially tagged
- 7:19Speaker 1: with two turnovers on the same play. It was a
- 7:22Speaker 1: curious decision to opt to not opt for the push
- 7:26Speaker 1: play or the traditional quarterback sneak with Hurts. Hurts was
- 7:31Speaker 1: again picked off on the ensuing drive by cornerback Dante
- 7:35Speaker 1: Jackson when it appeared wide receiver DeVante Smith fell down
- 7:38Speaker 1: or was knocked down, returning possession to the Eagles at
- 7:42Speaker 1: the Chargers thirty.
- 7:43Speaker 2: He threw another in the fourth quarter, this.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Time the heart firing high over the middle to AJ Brown.
- 7:50Speaker 2: You can make an argument that the pass should have
- 7:53Speaker 2: been caught.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It was a pass that AJ would have gotten absolutely
- 7:57Speaker 1: lit up.
- 7:57Speaker 2: It was a high.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Ball he normally catched that. That was one of the
- 8:01Speaker 1: plays that Aj after the game said that he wishes
- 8:04Speaker 1: he could have had back. Another one being the early
- 8:07Speaker 1: deep shot in the game where I think it was
- 8:10Speaker 1: cornerback Tarheeb Still that had him down the sideline. That
- 8:16Speaker 1: was one of the other plays that he mentioned. The
- 8:19Speaker 1: Eagles defense, I can't say enough about what they were
- 8:21Speaker 1: able to do. They delivered an inspired performance doing the
- 8:24Speaker 1: heavy lifting for an offense that again struggled to move
- 8:26Speaker 1: the football. For a perspective, the Eagles defender's knife threw
- 8:29Speaker 1: a poorest Chargers offensive line to the tune of seven
- 8:32Speaker 1: sacks and the interception. They got to Herbert on several occasions,
- 8:35Speaker 1: but were unable to corral him. Strong showing across the
- 8:38Speaker 1: board from a unit that has been swarming and on
- 8:40Speaker 1: the attack for most of the season. Obviously, the Black
- 8:43Speaker 1: Friday game against the Bears being the outlier, but second
- 8:46Speaker 1: year outside linebacker j loox Hunt may have been the
- 8:48Speaker 1: team's most impressive performer on this night on the defensive side,
- 8:53Speaker 1: collecting two and a half sacks and setting the edge
- 8:55Speaker 1: with physicality. I like the play call, design and execution
- 9:00Speaker 1: of the Eagles fourth quarter touchdown. On a third and
- 9:03Speaker 1: one from the Eagles forty eight, the team lined up
- 9:05Speaker 1: for their signature push play.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Oh, this one had a twist.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Instead of Hurts burrowing forward, they pitched it to Barkley,
- 9:11Speaker 1: who searched through en route to a fifty two yard
- 9:13Speaker 1: touchdown down that left sideline. Great blocks on the play,
- 9:17Speaker 1: by the way from wide receiver Darius Cooper and tight
- 9:20Speaker 1: end Dallas Godder, especially Darius Cooper, who it gets lost
- 9:23Speaker 1: in it a little bit, but he has done a
- 9:25Speaker 1: really nice job on those push plays, blocking and doing
- 9:28Speaker 1: some of that grimy and dirty work that Johnny Wilson
- 9:31Speaker 1: used to handle.
- 9:32Speaker 2: So good stuff there.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Vic Fangio last week acknowledged that he should have found
- 9:36Speaker 1: some snaps for rookie linebacker Johad Campbell, who failed to
- 9:38Speaker 1: generate any defensive snaps a week ago, the first time
- 9:42Speaker 1: that's occurred all season. But on the third defensive series,
- 9:45Speaker 1: Campbell aligned opposite Zach Baughn. Here's one a high quality
- 9:50Speaker 1: showing from cornerback adri Jackson, who defended a pair of
- 9:54Speaker 1: passes and was secure in his perimeter tackling. Herbert tested
- 9:58Speaker 1: him a handful of times, but Jackson answered the bell.
- 10:01Speaker 1: My Bowl prediction, as I mentioned to fellow Beat writers
- 10:05Speaker 1: Martin Frank and Ed Kratz, was that Jackson would snare
- 10:08Speaker 1: at interception this week, his first of the season and
- 10:11Speaker 1: the first from an Eagles outside cornerback since Keighley Ringo
- 10:14Speaker 1: accomplished that feat Christmas Day twenty twenty three, A Dory
- 10:20Speaker 1: stepped in front of tight end Ronde Gadson looks like
- 10:23Speaker 1: he read the route and he credited the defensive line
- 10:26Speaker 1: and after the game when I spoke to him, and
- 10:29Speaker 1: that was just a big time play. He gets a
- 10:33Speaker 1: lot of flak, a lot of heat. I think a
- 10:35Speaker 1: lot of it's unwarranted, and he's a survivor.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Vic Vangio said it best.
- 10:40Speaker 1: He's really turned things on and stepped up to the spot,
- 10:45Speaker 1: you know, stepped up to the moment when he's had
- 10:47Speaker 1: his you know, of late, and I think he doesn't
- 10:51Speaker 1: get nearly enough credit. But Dori Jackson I thought was
- 10:54Speaker 1: one of the other defenders who had a really strong
- 10:57Speaker 1: knight that wasn't a pass rusher, and Jackson returned possession
- 11:03Speaker 1: to a sputtering Eagles offense at their own forty five,
- 11:05Speaker 1: but Jake Elliot missed a forty eight yard field goal
- 11:08Speaker 1: wide left a couple of really untimely penalties for Moro Jomo.
- 11:12Speaker 1: As previously mentioned, I may have mentioned the third year
- 11:16Speaker 1: defensive tackle was called for an off size penalty that
- 11:19Speaker 1: negated a Cooper Dejine interception, but a Jomo was also
- 11:22Speaker 1: called for a leverage penalty on a Cameron Dicker thirty
- 11:25Speaker 1: six yard field goal in the third quarter. Though the
- 11:27Speaker 1: renewed life proved fruitless with the Eagles light on interior
- 11:31Speaker 1: defensive lineman, I thought third year pro Byron Young had
- 11:34Speaker 1: a really nice game, rebounding nicely following a game that
- 11:38Speaker 1: was arguably his and most of his defensive teammates low
- 11:41Speaker 1: light of the season against the Bears. He plugged the
- 11:44Speaker 1: run and notched one and a half sacks. I spoke
- 11:46Speaker 1: to Young last week I wrote a story for Inside
- 11:48Speaker 1: the Birds dot Com, and he conveyed confidence and poise
- 11:50Speaker 1: and anticipation of his expanded role. Good on Byron Young
- 11:54Speaker 1: for seizing his opportunity. I also thought that Jalen Phillips
- 11:58Speaker 1: had a hell of a game, setting the edge with violence,
- 12:02Speaker 1: playing with urgency, like his hair was on fire. There's
- 12:05Speaker 1: a couple of times where he missed Justin Herbert, but
- 12:07Speaker 1: he was around the quarterback like shark, like a shark
- 12:10Speaker 1: in the water, And I think that when you look
- 12:12Speaker 1: back on that, I have to go back and watch
- 12:14Speaker 1: the tape, but it looked to me like Jayalen Phillips
- 12:17Speaker 1: had an outstanding game.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Hey, one thing that always scares me is the latest
- 12:22Speaker 3: financial scam. And with the holidays, it's all about finding

- 15:03Speaker 1: Andre Sam his third quarter kick coverage tackle on returner
- 15:08Speaker 1: Kamani Vito was his first recorded stop of his career.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Night Monday Night was Sam's third NFL game. I mentioned
- 15:15Speaker 1: Tank Bigsby. Tank Bigsby factor quite a bit into the
- 15:18Speaker 1: backfield rotation early, but that persisted throughout the evening, something
- 15:21Speaker 1: I figured would happen to mix in different personnel and
- 15:24Speaker 1: offer different looks. Bigsby, as I mentioned earlier, even aligned
- 15:27Speaker 1: some out wide, but he only had one carry for
- 15:30Speaker 1: four yards. Shipley also worked in a little bit at times.
- 15:35Speaker 1: In terms of time of possession at the break, there
- 15:37Speaker 1: was a noticeable discrepancy between the Eagles, who had eighteen
- 15:41Speaker 1: forty three and the Chargers, who had the ball for
- 15:43Speaker 1: eleven minutes and seventeen seconds. This would shift dramatically in
- 15:47Speaker 1: the second half, and a lot of that had to
- 15:49Speaker 1: do with turnovers. But for an Eagles team that was
- 15:54Speaker 1: sputtering offensively for most of the season, what they could
- 15:57Speaker 1: hang their hat on was that they protected the football
- 16:01Speaker 1: and they played a little bit conservatively, if you will,
- 16:04Speaker 1: because when you're protecting the football, you have the luxury
- 16:08Speaker 1: being able to play that style. But five turnovers from
- 16:12Speaker 1: your quarterback is not going to win you very many games.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And this is not the first week that jaywen Hurst
- 16:17Speaker 1: has been prone to turning the football over, which is
- 16:20Speaker 1: a stark contrast to the style of play to the
- 16:22Speaker 1: player that he's been throughout his tenure as the Eagles
- 16:25Speaker 1: starting quarterback. He was accountable postgame, as he always is,
- 16:31Speaker 1: saying I need to do a better job.
- 16:34Speaker 2: It hurt. He said, this stings, but how are you
- 16:36Speaker 2: going to respond?
- 16:37Speaker 1: That's been his messaging about, not about what happened, but
- 16:41Speaker 1: about how are you going to respond to what just happened?
- 16:46Speaker 2: And there was a lot of I I need to
- 16:48Speaker 2: do better. I need to do better, And.
- 16:52Speaker 1: There's so many different takeaways from this game it's hard
- 16:54Speaker 1: to pinpoint just one. We talked about the defense playing
- 16:57Speaker 1: gutsy and lights out taking advantage of a porous.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Chargers offensive line.
- 17:02Speaker 1: There was the gutsy play from Justin Herbert late in
- 17:05Speaker 1: that game to even give the Chargers a chance when
- 17:07Speaker 1: they could not move the football and.
- 17:09Speaker 2: He was running for his life on it seemingly every play.
- 17:12Speaker 2: The Eagles running game got.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Back on track with Saquon Barkley, and it was tough
- 17:17Speaker 1: sledding on the first drive, but the floodgates started to
- 17:20Speaker 1: open a little bit, and I thought that you saw
- 17:23Speaker 1: shades of the Saquon Barkley of old. AJ Brown goes
- 17:26Speaker 1: over one hundred yards, but there are a number of
- 17:27Speaker 1: plays where he wasn't able to connect with Jaywen Hurts.
- 17:30Speaker 1: And after the game there were three different plays that
- 17:33Speaker 1: he listed as ones that he would like to have
- 17:35Speaker 1: back again.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Very accountable. There's no finger pointing here.
- 17:39Speaker 1: And I think the offense, while it struggled early on,
- 17:43Speaker 1: I thought later in the game, particularly throws over the
- 17:45Speaker 1: middle to Dallas Goddard, there were some rope throws that
- 17:48Speaker 1: Jaywen Hurts threw along the sideline. It seemed like they
- 17:51Speaker 1: started to get into a rhythm when they get up,
- 17:53Speaker 1: when they start running tempo and things like that. I
- 17:56Speaker 1: don't think the game plan or the play calling is
- 18:00Speaker 1: something that those should be pointing, you know, looking to
- 18:03Speaker 1: when you're trying to find an answer as to what
- 18:05Speaker 1: went wrong in this game. This one comes down to
- 18:08Speaker 1: execution and turnovers. Had the Eagles not turn the football over,
- 18:13Speaker 1: they turned it over one too many times. But had
- 18:15Speaker 1: they not, they played well enough on the defensive side
- 18:19Speaker 1: for them to be able to uplift the rest of
- 18:22Speaker 1: the team and give the Eagles a narrow win. It
- 18:24Speaker 1: wouldn't have been pretty, but it would have been enough
- 18:26Speaker 1: to win the football game. So what's next, Well, the
- 18:30Speaker 1: Eagles return to Philadelphia. Now they have the Raiders coming up,
- 18:34Speaker 1: which should be a get right spot where things are
- 18:36Speaker 1: going to start to get rectified and they should be
- 18:38Speaker 1: able to win convincingly. But they you know, every every
- 18:42Speaker 1: single team is you know, it's an NFL team and
- 18:44Speaker 1: they get paid too, So you can't take any team lightly,
- 18:47Speaker 1: nor have the Eagles taken any team lightly, And they're
- 18:50Speaker 1: gonna have to get back on the horse and get
- 18:52Speaker 1: things rolling because the games are dwindling and you want
- 18:55Speaker 1: to be playing your best football.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Obviously, as you're heading into the post scene.

- 21:15Speaker 1: But they have the leaders, they had the coaches to
- 21:17Speaker 1: do it. This is in my estimation.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I believe that they have the necessary pieces. It's not
- 21:22Speaker 2: going to be easy. No one said it was going
- 21:24Speaker 2: to be easy.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And if you thought it was going to be easy
- 21:27Speaker 1: to just kind of steamroll through the NFL, even with
- 21:29Speaker 1: the talent on this roster, you were gravely mistaken.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Every year is its own unique entity.
- 21:34Speaker 1: And you're seeing right now that the Eagles have now
- 21:37Speaker 1: been they went to the head of the NFL to
- 21:39Speaker 1: now they're sort of along the same lines of all
- 21:42Speaker 1: the other teams, and they're going to have to navigate
- 21:44Speaker 1: through that, and they have the talent, so I believe
- 21:46Speaker 1: the talent will ultimately prevail.
- 21:48Speaker 2: But that's going to do it.
