- 0:29What's going on, everybody?
- 0:30Welcome to Sunday Night CrossFit Talk.
- 0:36You know,
- 0:36I've done a whole day of football.
- 0:37I've got to put on my
- 0:38football announcer voice at
- 0:40least a little bit.
- 0:42Yeah, we're here.
- 0:43We're back every week.
- 0:45I've got a little bit of
- 0:46news to talk about this week,
- 0:47but how are you guys doing?
- 0:52Let's see.
- 0:52I got sick on Tuesday.
- 0:56Just, like,
- 0:56super head congestion and chest cold.
- 1:00Lucas had senior night
- 1:01Monday night for tennis.
- 1:03And then Wednesday was leagues.
- 1:06They won the league.
- 1:08Lucas took third overall in the league.
- 1:11But the team won.
- 1:12So,
- 1:13tomorrow we're going to Hope College
- 1:16for an all-day tournament.
- 1:18And then Wednesday is regionals.
- 1:21And they have to finish top
- 1:21three in the region to go to states.
- 1:25So...
- 1:26hoping for a good performance.
- 1:28He's getting sick now,
- 1:29so I'm like super nervous.
- 1:34It baffled my mind that you
- 1:35go all day during a school day.
- 1:38Oh yeah.
- 1:38To compete.
- 1:39They would never allow that
- 1:41to happen when I was in school.
- 1:42Yeah.
- 1:43I was,
- 1:44I had sent Scott that we were at
- 1:45tennis and he,
- 1:46he had mentioned that and
- 1:47it was count day for our
- 1:48day for our school.
- 1:50And I was cracking up that
- 1:52none of our kids were there.
- 1:53I don't know how, if they worked that out,
- 1:54if they had them, because that,
- 1:55not that I know of that,
- 1:56did any of those kids go
- 1:57inside and like check in for first hour?
- 2:00I don't know if someone
- 2:01walks out and is like, Oh,
- 2:02they're all right here.
- 2:04I'm not sure, but yeah, it was,
- 2:06it was a little count days in Canada.
- 2:08Carolyn.
- 2:09I don't, I've never heard of that.
- 2:10I don't know what you guys
- 2:11are talking about.
- 2:11Count days.
- 2:12So get the money.
- 2:13Yeah.
- 2:14You,
- 2:15you have a day where they come in and
- 2:16count your, your student body.
- 2:20Right.
- 2:21And so like they send out
- 2:22this stuff all to the parents.
- 2:23Do not let your kids miss
- 2:25this day of school because it,
- 2:27depending on how many
- 2:28bodies we have in the
- 2:29school that day is how much
- 2:31funding we get.
- 2:32Right.
- 2:33From the federal government.
- 2:34Yeah.
- 2:35I think that's irrelevant for us.
- 2:37Yeah, probably.
- 2:38Like, I don't understand why.
- 2:41Don't you just have the
- 2:43other hundred and eighty?
- 2:45Right.
- 2:46I mean, for us,
- 2:47like the secretaries would
- 2:48just have the numbers of
- 2:52the students that are at the school.
- 2:53And if someone was asking
- 2:55how many students attend our school,
- 2:56like they would just give that number.
- 3:00The number of students can
- 3:02obviously increase staff,
- 3:04like the amount of staff
- 3:05that we can have on board,
- 3:06or we might need two principals,
- 3:10like a vice principal if we
- 3:11grow to a certain extent,
- 3:13but I don't think it has
- 3:16anything to do with that.
- 3:18Like we just,
- 3:19the secretaries would just
- 3:20say what the number is.
- 3:23Lexis, that's too logical, Kara.
- 3:28Leave it to our government
- 3:29to add stupid steps to a
- 3:31process that make absolutely no sense.
- 3:35Because literally,
- 3:37just what's your enrollment?
- 3:39And send that to us.
- 3:40Why is it on this day of the
- 3:43year it matters more than any other day?
- 3:45A lot of times it's like
- 3:47when there's a rule, there's a story.
- 3:49So I don't know if people
- 3:50were just lying before and
- 3:51trying to get more funding.
- 3:53Especially if your school is...
- 3:56funded based off of how many
- 3:58students like the way that
- 3:59we run our schools is
- 4:00obviously different in
- 4:01canada um so I would assume
- 4:05that there's some slight
- 4:07differences there well and
- 4:10this is not a bragging
- 4:11anyway but the district I
- 4:12live in we have supported
- 4:16the school so much through
- 4:17taxes we don't get hardly
- 4:19any funding anyway yeah
- 4:21So it's very minimal what we get,
- 4:23but they want to get every
- 4:25dollar they can of that minimal amount.
- 4:28So they always make sure
- 4:30that your kids are in school that day.
- 4:32Interesting.
- 4:37So, Carolyn, your number one fan is here.
- 4:40Yeah, she is.
- 4:41She's letting everybody know.
- 4:42She's coming to Canada in a few weeks,
- 4:45so maybe we'll do a show
- 4:47together on one of the nights.
- 4:48Oh, yay.
- 4:49Okay.
- 4:50Craig is reminding me that
- 4:51the Bears won today.
- 4:51Nice.
- 4:53Which they did.
- 4:54And Lex is asking if I'm
- 4:55drinking anything good.
- 4:57This is actually just iced coffee.
- 4:59It's what I have a lot of
- 5:00times when I've had a long day.
- 5:02And I'll explain that after
- 5:03Carolyn's done.
- 5:05No,
- 5:06this week has felt like the most
- 5:09regular week of school
- 5:10since the beginning of the
- 5:13semester in September when
- 5:14school started.
- 5:15I just feel like I've been
- 5:16on the go from the get-go
- 5:19in September with NorCal.
- 5:21just traveling with different things.
- 5:24And then this week, my schedule changed.
- 5:26So I got that.
- 5:29So I was teaching a
- 5:29leadership class at the
- 5:30beginning of the year,
- 5:31which I've never taught before.
- 5:32And they gave me back my grade ten math.
- 5:34So I now have,
- 5:36which I was teaching since I
- 5:38got back from NorCal anyways,
- 5:39like I was teaching four
- 5:40classes instead of three.
- 5:42which we always teach free during the day.
- 5:45So now I have math grade nine,
- 5:47math grade ten, and then a fitness class,
- 5:49which is my regular
- 5:50schedule the last year.
- 5:52So I just have – I just know
- 5:57what I'm doing with that class.
- 5:59I have everything planned.
- 6:00So it just was like a relief
- 6:03to get given that class.
- 6:05So excited to –
- 6:08Get going,
- 6:09and then I'm missing school
- 6:10again this week.
- 6:11Yeah.
- 6:16Well, I've had a pretty good week,
- 6:18actually.
- 6:18But this weekend,
- 6:20I still have my wisdom teeth.
- 6:21And every once in a while,
- 6:22they try to break through
- 6:24the skin in the back of my mouth.
- 6:27And this is one of those weekends.
- 6:29And it's just very painful.
- 6:32you can barely eat because
- 6:34it hurts to chew um and
- 6:36then they'll recede like
- 6:38the one is already receded
- 6:39I'm now I'm just waiting
- 6:40for the other side to
- 6:40recede um and it's just
- 6:43made like the last day and
- 6:45a half kind of miserable
- 6:47because I can't eat I can't
- 6:48sleep um and thus the iced
- 6:51coffee at eight p.m um to
- 6:53get through the show
- 6:55Um,
- 6:56and my body processes caffeine pretty
- 6:58quick anyway.
- 7:00So usually I can drink
- 7:01coffee and then fall asleep anyway.
- 7:02But, um, but that's been kind of my week,
- 7:05but the week started out
- 7:07really good because I
- 7:09weaned myself off of insulin this week.
- 7:13I did see that on your other show.
- 7:15I was like, Oh, yay.
- 7:16Okay.
- 7:16So yeah, it was,
- 7:18the deal was every time I
- 7:19could get three days under
- 7:22a hundred and ten blood sugar,
- 7:24I could lower the insulin
- 7:26to units and I was at ten
- 7:28and so I've weaned it down
- 7:30and now I've been under one
- 7:32ten enough times that it is
- 7:34totally gone and hopefully
- 7:38never to take it again.
- 7:42And that was a big, crazy, thank you,
- 7:44Beck.
- 7:45And that was a big,
- 7:46crazy thing that happened
- 7:47during the AFib where during that time,
- 7:50my blood sugar spiked and
- 7:52been trying to get it down ever since.
- 7:54And yeah,
- 7:55I've been working very hard at
- 7:57that and a huge accomplishment.
- 8:00Congratulations.
- 8:03So.
- 8:05Super stoked for that.
- 8:06And then to feel miserable
- 8:07this weekend is just kind of crazy,
- 8:08but it's just my teeth.
- 8:10It's really nothing else.
- 8:12Um, and it'll go away as it always does.
- 8:15It only flares up like once
- 8:16every couple of years, but man,
- 8:18when it does, it just really hurts.
- 8:22So that's that.
- 8:24Um, Carolyn, you got,
- 8:25you tried something new this weekend.
- 8:27I did.
- 8:28I showed up to the high rocks in Toronto.
- 8:32There were so many people
- 8:33from the CrossFit community,
- 8:34like the local community.
- 8:36A lot of people came down from Quebec too.
- 8:40Like I saw a couple of
- 8:42people from Pro One.
- 8:45Sam Cornoyer was competing.
- 8:48uh,
- 8:48Emma Lawson and Jack Farlow were doing
- 8:50the mixed doubles, uh,
- 8:53and then just like local
- 8:54CrossFitters that I would know.
- 8:55Um, yeah, my, uh,
- 8:58one of my best friends at
- 8:59the gym who I used to
- 9:00compete with years ago, um,
- 9:03I think the last time we
- 9:04competed together was and
- 9:07he asked me to be on his
- 9:08team to do a high rocks,
- 9:10which normally I would not.
- 9:11Cause it's a lot of running and
- 9:14it's a lot of running.
- 9:15Um, but I was like, for you, I'll do it.
- 9:18So I said yes to him.
- 9:20And, um,
- 9:21he's like more of a weightlifter now.
- 9:22So, um, we just decided to do it for fun.
- 9:25And honestly, I was really impressed by,
- 9:28by him, not like lasting the whole time.
- 9:31Cause he just had,
- 9:32he's had three knee
- 9:33surgeries in the past year and a half, um,
- 9:36for his like ACL reconstruction stuff.
- 9:38So to last that volume was, was good.
- 9:44Yeah, when I first got to the venue,
- 9:46like it looked like just a
- 9:48shit show of things going on.
- 9:50And people like running in a
- 9:53circle and then going to
- 9:54stations and then people are like,
- 9:57like that are trying to get
- 9:58to places like are waiting
- 9:59for people to run by and
- 10:00then like cutting.
- 10:02And I was like, what is going on?
- 10:03Like, it's nothing like a CrossFit event.
- 10:05And then I was like, this is so confusing.
- 10:07But then once I got briefed
- 10:10and saw everything, I was like, okay,
- 10:13like it made sense.
- 10:14And then once you were actually competing,
- 10:16it was very easy to follow.
- 10:17They had huge like yellow
- 10:19signs of like station one, two, three,
- 10:21all the way to eight.
- 10:23Um,
- 10:24Not many judges on the floor, I felt.
- 10:27Like when you're doing different,
- 10:29and I don't know if it was
- 10:30just the Toronto one or if
- 10:31this is a standard of high rocks.
- 10:35I will assume a lot of them
- 10:37probably don't have as many judges.
- 10:38But like when you're competing in CrossFit,
- 10:40you always have a judge for
- 10:41every movement that you do, every rep.
- 10:45And here you don't,
- 10:46you kind of had like a
- 10:47judge just kind of rolling,
- 10:49like looking at a few things sometimes,
- 10:51um, only the wall ball.
- 10:53I think we had a specific judge and maybe,
- 10:56maybe another station or two.
- 10:58Um,
- 11:00so like there was a lot of no reps from
- 11:01people that I was like
- 11:03looking at the whole day.
- 11:05Um, but it was really fun.
- 11:06Like to me, it just felt like a
- 11:08a good long workout, like a long grind.
- 11:11We got to do the runs
- 11:12together and then share the
- 11:14workload how we wanted.
- 11:17Did it, did it feel like a community?
- 11:20Did it have the community
- 11:21aspect of like a typical
- 11:23CrossFit local comp?
- 11:27Yes and no.
- 11:28I wouldn't say as much
- 11:29community just because
- 11:30there's so many people that
- 11:31are just going through this race.
- 11:32It's just like you get to
- 11:34your briefing like ten,
- 11:37fifteen minutes before and
- 11:38then you go through the
- 11:40race and then it's over
- 11:41before you know it.
- 11:43It's long,
- 11:43but it's hard to see people and
- 11:47really sit down and chat.
- 11:49There wasn't that much seating.
- 11:51There was one bleach area
- 11:52and then everyone's just
- 11:53kind of spread out around
- 11:54the course looking at different stations.
- 11:57Um, super boring to watch, like,
- 11:59cause you're just watching
- 12:00the whole thing the entire day.
- 12:02It's just like, I mean,
- 12:05for hours and hours and hours,
- 12:07it's the same workout.
- 12:08So you just look over the
- 12:09bleacher and you look at that station.
- 12:10You're like, okay,
- 12:10I'm sick of watching wall balls.
- 12:11I'm going to watch the burpees.
- 12:12I don't really want to watch the burpees.
- 12:14So it's like something
- 12:15that's like really fun to
- 12:16do less fun to watch.
- 12:19Um, very accessible for people.
- 12:21There's different versions of it.
- 12:22Like there's a relay version.
- 12:24There's, um, scaled weights,
- 12:27stuff like that too.
- 12:28Um,
- 12:29I can see why it's very popular for sure.
- 12:33Um, cause yeah, it, it is,
- 12:36it's not as intimidating as, you know,
- 12:39going into a CrossFit gym
- 12:40and having some of the skills that we'll,
- 12:42we'll have.
- 12:43Um,
- 12:44But I don't know if I'd want
- 12:46to ever train just for high rocks.
- 12:49Like it's,
- 12:50it would get so repetitive to me.
- 12:53Uh, Anderson says,
- 12:54sounds like a Spartan or a Tough Mudder.
- 12:56And that's kind of like what it is.
- 12:57You show up, you go to your start time,
- 13:00you go, when you're done, you're done.
- 13:02And you kind of like move on.
- 13:03That's what it felt like.
- 13:07It was fun though.
- 13:08Like I'd like to do one,
- 13:09let's say like with Lex,
- 13:10like as a doubles, just to, you know,
- 13:12see what we can do together.
- 13:14Um, but yeah.
- 13:17Did you guys beat Jack and Emma?
- 13:20No, no, no, no.
- 13:26I'd be curious what,
- 13:27how they did together.
- 13:29They got an hour, one hour.
- 13:32Yeah.
- 13:35pull up the leaderboard.
- 13:38Yeah, you could pull up the leaderboard.
- 13:40I think they were like today
- 13:42there was a few people.
- 13:43So there was two days of divisions today.
- 13:45There was a few people
- 13:46within like the fifty seven, fifty eight,
- 13:48fifty nine minutes range.
- 13:50But they were they were within the top.
- 13:52I think they were I think
- 13:53they may have been second
- 13:54in their age group.
- 13:57overall second or third
- 13:59within their age group.
- 14:00So they were in like the
- 14:01sixteen to twenty nine.
- 14:03And then there's like a
- 14:04thirty to thirty nine,
- 14:05forty to forty nine.
- 14:06It's just like the average
- 14:07age of both of them where it falls.
- 14:12So I was in the thirty to
- 14:14thirty nine division with my partner.
- 14:18I was curious what what the
- 14:19vibe was like and and, you know,
- 14:21because you hear about it all the time,
- 14:22but I've never been to one.
- 14:24Um,
- 14:26but now I know because
- 14:27you've been there and you
- 14:28told us yeah it's just like
- 14:31a like I said more fun to
- 14:32do than to watch like I
- 14:35couldn't stay there all
- 14:36afternoon even though like
- 14:37some of my some of the
- 14:39members from my uh
- 14:40affiliate were racing I was
- 14:41like there's no way I'm
- 14:42staying here until seven to to watch
- 14:48Well,
- 14:48probably kind of mind numbing to
- 14:50watch some of those reps.
- 14:52If you're sitting there
- 14:53watching all of that,
- 14:54get away with all that.
- 14:55I didn't know if it was like, I mean,
- 14:57you look,
- 14:57you go to local CrossFit
- 14:58competitions too.
- 14:59And like,
- 15:00they're not as strict on some stuff.
- 15:01So like,
- 15:02I didn't know whether it was
- 15:03they're strict on the pro
- 15:04division and maybe less so
- 15:06on some of the other
- 15:06divisions that aren't as competitive.
- 15:11So like that, I don't know for that.
- 15:14I have heard that,
- 15:15that the pro like gets a judge that's,
- 15:18you know.
- 15:19Which I would assume.
- 15:20And you know what?
- 15:21Like we also do that in
- 15:22CrossFit competitions often too.
- 15:24Like you let things go as a judge.
- 15:26Sometimes when you see people, you're like,
- 15:28they're like,
- 15:29especially if they're like
- 15:30older or like in the amateur division,
- 15:34like things are like going
- 15:35CrossFit as well,
- 15:36but not to maybe not to the
- 15:38extent that you'd see at a High Rocks.
- 15:43Yeah, I mean,
- 15:43I've judged at local comps
- 15:45where the person said, hey,
- 15:47give a warning before you
- 15:49give a no rep and stuff like that.
- 15:52Well,
- 15:53they have this box for the wall balls.
- 15:55If you feel like you can't squat to depth,
- 15:59go to this box.
- 16:00This box is way above parallel.
- 16:03You may as well go to the box if you can.
- 16:06It's literally like you're
- 16:07not even close to parallel
- 16:09if you're squatting to the box,
- 16:10but it is what it is.
- 16:14Okay.
- 16:18All right.
- 16:18So next on our list is
- 16:21episode five of the
- 16:23documentary series behind
- 16:25the scenes at the CrossFit
- 16:26Games comes out tomorrow at
- 16:27twelve thirty p.m.
- 16:29Eastern time.
- 16:30And that is what nine thirty a.m.
- 16:33Pacific time.
- 16:34And we have a trailer.
- 16:36So here we go.
- 16:42I would say the people, you know,
- 16:49just being around everybody.
- 16:50I really like the
- 16:51competition standpoint of it, of,
- 16:53you know, warming up,
- 16:54talking to people in the back, you know.
- 16:56I think one thing that's,
- 16:58I was glad to see,
- 16:58because it's generally my personal,
- 17:00I don't take this stuff real seriously.
- 17:01You know, there's a bunch of us,
- 17:03I talk to them about it, and be like,
- 17:04listen, I could win this event,
- 17:06I could win this entire competition,
- 17:08and I still gotta go to work on Tuesday,
- 17:10and I'm gonna have a bunch of emails,
- 17:11and my boss is gonna say,
- 17:11here's what you missed,
- 17:13let's get to work on it.
- 17:14So, I think everybody has,
- 17:16a lot of people have that mindset,
- 17:17so it's just good to just be like, hey,
- 17:19you worked really hard for this,
- 17:21it's a heck of an accomplishment,
- 17:23so to be able to turn
- 17:24around and try to perform on the floor.
- 17:29They call me the magic man.
- 17:31Got a trick up my sleeve.
- 17:33Always pulling the upper hand.
- 17:34I win and I win and repeat.
- 17:37My method is so advanced,
- 17:38like a super computer.
- 17:40I wind them up like a rubber
- 17:41band and I send them back to the future.
- 17:44I can do anything, believe it or not.
- 17:48I make it look easy when I'm
- 17:50taking the shot.
- 17:52Precision is critical
- 17:54Breathin' and let it go
- 17:56Break through the physical,
- 17:57this is the pinnacle We
- 17:58goin' over the top
- 18:10Rough cut, but quick trailer.
- 18:13I loved when Brett talked about, you know,
- 18:16he has a full-time job, and yeah,
- 18:18he loves competing at the CrossFit Games.
- 18:21And what's cool about these
- 18:21Masters athletes is he had
- 18:23a job to go back to on Tuesday,
- 18:25and Carolyn knows that as well as anybody,
- 18:27right?
- 18:27No matter how he finishes in that event...
- 18:30He had to go back to work on Tuesday,
- 18:32and his boss was going to
- 18:34expect all the same things
- 18:36they expect every other day of the year.
- 18:39And so I thought it was
- 18:39really cool that he had
- 18:41that perspective and shared
- 18:43it with us for the behind the scenes.
- 18:46So that comes out tomorrow morning.
- 18:48It's a snatch ladder event.
- 18:51The only thing that may
- 18:52change up after this week
- 18:54is going through some of
- 18:56the videos for the echo bike workout,
- 18:58which is actually event six.
- 19:01The snatch ladder was event four.
- 19:04I may combine with event
- 19:05five because nobody wanted
- 19:08to talk after the echo bike workout.
- 19:12So we have very limited,
- 19:14I'll put in the little bits
- 19:15we have and you can just to
- 19:17show like how it wiped
- 19:19everybody out and they had,
- 19:20they had no interest in
- 19:22talking to us at all.
- 19:24Uh,
- 19:24and I'll put all that in after like a
- 19:25little montage,
- 19:26but I think I'm going to
- 19:27combine next week events five and six.
- 19:31So instead of eleven episodes,
- 19:32it'll be ten.
- 19:33Uh,
- 19:34but that'll be episode six and I'll
- 19:36combine those two together.
- 19:38Does that sound accurate, Jamie?
- 19:41Yeah,
- 19:41I had like four messages in my inbox.
- 19:44Like, are you okay?
- 19:45Because I was apparently not
- 19:47okay walking around after that event.
- 19:53So Andrew asks,
- 19:55did I interview any staff
- 19:57or volunteers or did I only do athletes?
- 19:59I did athletes and coaches
- 20:00this year because I didn't
- 20:02know the kind of timeframe I would have.
- 20:06And I had to put together
- 20:08something as a proof of
- 20:10concept so we could do this
- 20:11more and expand more.
- 20:13But if I would do it in the future,
- 20:15I'd love to talk to judges
- 20:18and event coordinators and
- 20:20stuff like that as we went
- 20:22through it to equipment movers,
- 20:24whatever medical team.
- 20:26I mean,
- 20:27I talked to the medical team a lot.
- 20:28It wouldn't have been too
- 20:29much to just turn the camera on them.
- 20:32Yeah.
- 20:33But I had just one sole
- 20:35focus for this year to do a
- 20:37proof of concept and then
- 20:39kind of put it together and
- 20:41see how it turned out and
- 20:42what I would need to expand that.
- 20:46I'd probably have to take
- 20:47one more person with me to
- 20:49ensure we had enough
- 20:50material for each event to do that.
- 20:56So I'd need three
- 20:57interviewers to pull that off.
- 21:01with all the divisions,
- 21:02the masters has to offer
- 21:04and to be able to cover everybody.
- 21:05Cause we tried to get a
- 21:06little bit from seventy
- 21:07plus all the way down to
- 21:09thirty five to thirty nine
- 21:12and make sure that
- 21:13everybody was included.
- 21:15At least every division was
- 21:16included in this.
- 21:21So there's that.
- 21:25I don't know if anybody has seen this,
- 21:26but there's been breaking
- 21:27news in the last little bit.
- 21:29It popped up on Instagram
- 21:31that James Townsend was doing a lift,
- 21:35something he does all the time.
- 21:38And he got out of position
- 21:40during the lift and ended
- 21:42up pulling both quadriceps
- 21:44muscles and suffering a
- 21:46left vastus medialis quad tear.
- 21:54Um,
- 21:55And with that, there's surgery looming,
- 21:57and he is very upset with himself.
- 22:00If you want to go check it
- 22:01out on Instagram,
- 22:03he talks about how the
- 22:05competitor's mindset
- 22:06sometimes puts you in bad
- 22:07positions because you push
- 22:10your body to limits.
- 22:11And he knew he was in a bad position,
- 22:13but he tried to fight through it.
- 22:16Um,
- 22:16and right now he's in a frame of mind
- 22:19where is that he is under the thinking,
- 22:23is this the end of his
- 22:24athletic career as he knows it?
- 22:28Yeah.
- 22:28For people that don't know James,
- 22:29he's like the most explosive athlete, um,
- 22:34probably in our space.
- 22:36Um, what he's, what he does for numbers is,
- 22:39is ridiculous.
- 22:41He,
- 22:41I think he power snatched the other day,
- 22:43like, um,
- 22:45three, fifteen.
- 22:46He can clean power, clean four hundred,
- 22:49I think very easily.
- 22:51If you look at the video and
- 22:52he's like great jumper,
- 22:53like just just raw athleticism,
- 22:55he's unreal.
- 22:56If you want to get strong,
- 22:57you basically go to him.
- 23:00And if you look at the video,
- 23:02like he often power cleans,
- 23:03he like he he does better
- 23:05with like power cleans than squat clean,
- 23:07I would say like
- 23:08He's just a power athlete.
- 23:10And I think he caught it low.
- 23:11And I don't know if he
- 23:12warmed up his quads enough to, um,
- 23:17squat the clean.
- 23:18And I wonder if like,
- 23:19that was the factor that
- 23:21made him like pull there
- 23:23just cause he's so used to like,
- 23:24he catches so high at ridiculous loads.
- 23:28So he just caught it very low there,
- 23:30which he, like,
- 23:31I never seen him catch really low.
- 23:33Um, did you watch the video?
- 23:35I did.
- 23:35Yeah.
- 23:37Yeah,
- 23:38and James has been on the show a
- 23:39couple times.
- 23:40He's a good friend of mine.
- 23:42Always talks to me,
- 23:43and I always talk to him at
- 23:44different events.
- 23:47He was also Mal O'Brien's
- 23:48coach her first year at the
- 23:50CrossFit Games.
- 23:51And then famously, Mal moved to HWPO.
- 23:56And Tudor's coach as well.
- 23:57He's coached a lot of great athletes.
- 24:01But he was also a Chicago Bearer.
- 24:03And that's how I first kind
- 24:04of reached out to him is he
- 24:06was a former football player.
- 24:08He played for my Chicago bears,
- 24:10had him on the show, talked about it.
- 24:11He has a fantastic story
- 24:15that leads up to his
- 24:16athletic life and some of
- 24:18the mental struggles that
- 24:19that put him in.
- 24:21Um, if you've never heard that before,
- 24:24I know he's been on other shows as well,
- 24:25talking about it.
- 24:27You should definitely check it out.
- 24:28He's a very interesting person.
- 24:30Um,
- 24:31And my heart goes out to him,
- 24:32prayers that he heals up fast.
- 24:36And this is something that
- 24:37can be corrected and he can
- 24:38get back to coaching.
- 24:40He loves coaching and he
- 24:41loves coaching kids.
- 24:42And he has two amazing
- 24:45daughters that are gymnasts
- 24:46and they hang out with him at the gym.
- 24:49And yeah,
- 24:52I just hope he can get back to
- 24:54being a good dad and
- 24:56coaching again because he's
- 24:58really good at it.
- 25:01His post was tough to read
- 25:02because there's lots of
- 25:05CrossFitters who put their
- 25:07identity in CrossFit.
- 25:09If a season gets taken away from you,
- 25:12you kind of lose yourself.
- 25:18You can tell he's nervous
- 25:19that he'll never be
- 25:22the same.
- 25:23Yeah.
- 25:23And I don't,
- 25:24I pretty sure we had a member tear the,
- 25:28his vastus medialis like
- 25:29two or three years ago at a comp, um,
- 25:32doing like a power clean squat,
- 25:35front squat combo lift.
- 25:37Um, I don't know.
- 25:41I don't know.
- 25:42Um,
- 25:48I don't know.
- 25:48Just to bring up Lex's question here,
- 25:53will he have to be in a wheelchair?
- 25:55If he has to do surgery on both of them,
- 25:56then yeah.
- 25:58One of the strong men pulled
- 26:00both quads last year or
- 26:02maybe two years ago.
- 26:03I forget which one.
- 26:06I would assume that he might
- 26:09have to be in a wheelchair
- 26:10for a little bit as the
- 26:14surgeries go because you
- 26:14can't just do one if they're both pulled.
- 26:17Yeah, if you pull a muscle,
- 26:19you are tearing the muscle fiber.
- 26:21It's just to what degree has it been torn.
- 26:24Right.
- 26:25And there are grades one
- 26:26through three of a pull or a tear.
- 26:30And he did not mention what
- 26:32that was on the pulls.
- 26:35But he did pull both quads
- 26:37and tore the one.
- 26:41The medialis on the one.
- 26:42So, yeah.
- 26:44I would guess at least for a
- 26:46few days he'd probably be
- 26:47in a wheelchair.
- 26:48But these days,
- 26:49whenever you have major surgeries,
- 26:51they want you up moving
- 26:52because the blood flow is so important.
- 26:59For him,
- 27:00it's tough because he's not in his
- 27:02early teens or twenties.
- 27:03I think he just turned forty,
- 27:05maybe not long ago.
- 27:07Um,
- 27:08and I know he was training for like
- 27:10masters, um,
- 27:12track and field stuff and
- 27:13working on his sprinting.
- 27:14And I'm sure he had plenty of goals there.
- 27:17So, you know, you, when you have a major,
- 27:20uh, injury like that, you start, you know,
- 27:23it's,
- 27:23it's defeating in all of your goals
- 27:25that you had set and plans for that year.
- 27:27And,
- 27:28Not knowing how you're going
- 27:30to recover and if you're
- 27:31going to have that same
- 27:33explosion again is it's the uncertainty.
- 27:37Right.
- 27:37So thoughts to him and speedy recovery.
- 27:41And that's not just for high
- 27:42level athletes.
- 27:43Like when my back went out,
- 27:44I went through the same thing here.
- 27:46I find this thing that kind
- 27:48of saved my life and.
- 27:50brought me back to something
- 27:51fun and athletic and lost a
- 27:54ton of weight.
- 27:55And when my back went and I couldn't do it,
- 27:57like it tore me up.
- 27:59It tore me up mentally.
- 28:00It's very, very bad.
- 28:03Did you ever get back into swimming?
- 28:04I remember like months ago
- 28:06you were saying that you
- 28:07wanted to do that for like lower impact.
- 28:09So I was going to do it
- 28:09right after the games.
- 28:11What happened at the games
- 28:12put me in a funk.
- 28:14I do still want to go back to swimming.
- 28:17And I probably will at some
- 28:18point this winter.
- 28:19Cause once the snow comes,
- 28:22my garage is not going to be as easy,
- 28:25easily attainable.
- 28:26And so I think that'll be
- 28:27the perfect time to get into swimming.
- 28:33But yeah, so,
- 28:38but I think I'm getting in a
- 28:39better position where
- 28:39swimming is even going to
- 28:40be easier when I do it anyway.
- 28:42Like, so yeah.
- 28:48um yeah uh lex says also
- 28:53being a gym owner having
- 28:54three young kids he has a
- 28:55physical demand he does
- 28:58sure does all right so the
- 29:03next topic did you guys
- 29:04watch the barbell spin this
- 29:06week or I think they call
- 29:07it the spin now the show
- 29:09where Ariel Lohan was on for
- 29:11the first fifteen or twenty minutes.
- 29:13If you have not seen that,
- 29:15please go to the spin and
- 29:17watch that twenty minutes.
- 29:19It's really the last ten
- 29:20she's on that are what
- 29:22we're going to talk about now.
- 29:23But she actually opens up
- 29:25about some things she
- 29:27posted on her story on Instagram.
- 29:30um about that one of the
- 29:33posts was someone asked her
- 29:35about the games this year
- 29:36she said they were horrible
- 29:38and I it I'm paraphrasing
- 29:42at this point they were
- 29:43horrible and if I never
- 29:45competed in them again I
- 29:46would be okay with it
- 29:48And then in another post,
- 29:50she was picking out
- 29:52different off-season
- 29:54competitions that an elite
- 29:58athlete would never do if
- 29:59they were competing in the
- 30:00games because they kind of
- 30:01run around the same time.
- 30:03And that is like NorCal Classic,
- 30:07Crash Crucible.
- 30:08She picked a couple others
- 30:09that were kind of in the summer range.
- 30:11Um, and, and that's, she said,
- 30:13that's how I would like,
- 30:15I would focus on those
- 30:16types of competitions as
- 30:17opposed to the games.
- 30:20So they, they opened up, they actually, um,
- 30:24talked to her about that.
- 30:25And I thought Tyler was the
- 30:26best at kind of getting a
- 30:28summation of as to what she
- 30:29was meaning by it all.
- 30:32Because he was like,
- 30:33I get what you're saying here,
- 30:34but I don't understand the
- 30:35emotional thing you're talking about.
- 30:38Can you explain it to me better?
- 30:40And she was basically saying
- 30:41that from the time of Lazar's death.
- 30:45until eight in the morning
- 30:47the next day when they went
- 30:48back out on the floor it
- 30:50was crossfit trying to do
- 30:52everything they could to
- 30:54get the athletes back out
- 30:55on the floor and that she
- 30:57felt like a circus monkey
- 30:59and they just wanted like
- 31:02her quote is like they
- 31:04wanted circus monkey go out
- 31:05and dance go out and dance
- 31:08and um and it really and it
- 31:11came to a head on saturday
- 31:13morning doing chad when
- 31:15you're doing a hero workout
- 31:16thinking about fallen
- 31:18heroes and the announcer
- 31:21just talking about the race
- 31:23and then everything that
- 31:24happened in the weekend
- 31:25kind of came to a flood to
- 31:27her and right after that
- 31:30event she packed up and
- 31:31that's when she left
- 31:34We talked about the hero
- 31:35workouts prior to the games.
- 31:37I had mentioned that I
- 31:39personally don't like the
- 31:40hero workouts in terms of
- 31:42in a major competition like
- 31:43this because if we're
- 31:45acknowledging and honoring a hero,
- 31:49it's always, to me,
- 31:50weird to do a race for it.
- 31:54have the time be a huge factor.
- 31:56Like you normally, you just, you know,
- 31:57you suffer and you,
- 31:59you think about that person or whatever,
- 32:01um,
- 32:01hero that you're doing it for and you
- 32:03do it.
- 32:03So, um, I don't, um, I'm like, I'm not,
- 32:08I wasn't surprised by
- 32:09anything that Ariel said.
- 32:12Um,
- 32:13I've heard similar things from a couple
- 32:16other athletes as well,
- 32:17that that's how they felt as well.
- 32:19Um,
- 32:23I'm going to kind of be
- 32:23putting words in her mouth,
- 32:24but it felt like she was
- 32:25saying that in her mind,
- 32:28she felt like they were
- 32:29being told whatever they
- 32:32needed to be told to get
- 32:33out on the floor.
- 32:36Yeah.
- 32:36Which included things like, you know,
- 32:39having the blessings of the
- 32:40family and a lot of athletes did,
- 32:43you know,
- 32:43do it as soon as they heard that.
- 32:45And then when they heard that it wasn't,
- 32:48you know, through Luca,
- 32:49that that wasn't necessarily the case.
- 32:51I think some of them felt
- 32:53guilt and felt conflicted
- 32:57in this whole situation.
- 32:58And then they're like,
- 32:59we're just here to
- 33:01basically make money for
- 33:02the company and stuff like that.
- 33:03So, um,
- 33:05I think a lot of them were
- 33:06going through those, those thoughts.
- 33:08And again,
- 33:11I can't put myself in those
- 33:12athletes because I wasn't there,
- 33:13but just from things that
- 33:15I've had conversations with
- 33:16athletes about and yeah,
- 33:19it was that kind of get back on the floor,
- 33:23like,
- 33:23like do whatever it is feels right
- 33:25for you type thing.
- 33:27But it was like,
- 33:27the blessing was a huge
- 33:29part of people continuing
- 33:30and this is what Lazar
- 33:31would want and this and that.
- 33:32And yeah,
- 33:34And I guess when the story
- 33:35was a little bit different backstage,
- 33:37people,
- 33:39people had conflicting feelings
- 33:43about what was happening on
- 33:44the floor and the rest of
- 33:46the competition and how it was going on.
- 33:49I mean, I can see,
- 33:51I can see people looking
- 33:53back and questioning that
- 33:56like the blessing and feeling duped.
- 33:58And I can see some anger
- 34:00beyond around that, but
- 34:03Again, I don't think,
- 34:05I obviously wasn't there.
- 34:08I have not listened to this,
- 34:09but from most of the
- 34:12statements I've heard,
- 34:13and you just said it too,
- 34:14like they were given the
- 34:15choice to walk out on the floor or not.
- 34:18Do what you feel is right.
- 34:20Like nobody said you need to
- 34:22get out here and do this.
- 34:24like it was a, it was your choice.
- 34:27They gave them the right to
- 34:29not even compete that day and,
- 34:30and think on it more and
- 34:32come back the next day
- 34:32where you weren't even normally,
- 34:34if you don't step out on the floor,
- 34:35you're done.
- 34:36Like,
- 34:36I feel like they gave them a lot of
- 34:38leeway.
- 34:39I, and this just seems like, I'm sure when,
- 34:45right.
- 34:46Like plenty of people had like their own
- 34:49mindset of how things should be handled.
- 34:52And when things just, and,
- 34:54and some people are just wired this way,
- 34:56right?
- 34:56Like, like something happens,
- 34:58this is how they would handle it.
- 35:00This is how they feel it
- 35:01needs to handle be handled.
- 35:02And it doesn't,
- 35:03and they're not happy with the,
- 35:07the outcome in the situation.
- 35:09Um,
- 35:11but there was a lot of people who
- 35:13wanted to continue a lot of
- 35:15athletes who wanted to continue.
- 35:18Yeah,
- 35:18there were definitely a lot of
- 35:19athletes that wanted to
- 35:20continue and that was their
- 35:21way to honor Lazar and to
- 35:24finish the competition and
- 35:26their seasons and stuff like that.
- 35:28But then there's another
- 35:29group of athletes I think
- 35:30that felt like while they
- 35:32did have a choice, they felt lied to.
- 35:34They felt manipulated to continue on.
- 35:37So you have that separation there.
- 35:39So like some people that
- 35:42want to and then other
- 35:43people that were on the
- 35:44fence and kind of going back and forth,
- 35:45not really sure what to do.
- 35:47there are a big group of
- 35:49those or there are athletes
- 35:51that I should say that did
- 35:52feel like they were
- 35:56manipulated into thinking
- 35:57this is what is the better choice versus,
- 36:02um, like not,
- 36:04not putting that kind of
- 36:05statement out there and
- 36:06maybe allowing athletes to
- 36:08make a choice based off of, um,
- 36:13don't know if you want like
- 36:14if I if you understand what
- 36:15I'm saying just like
- 36:16without that statement I
- 36:17guess behind because if
- 36:19you're making the choice to
- 36:20continue because you think
- 36:21that that's like the
- 36:24blessing and everything and
- 36:25then it ends up not being I
- 36:28think that changes your
- 36:29your perspective but that's
- 36:30for the the group of
- 36:31athletes that I'm talking
- 36:32about that right and then
- 36:33there's another one that
- 36:34they were set no matter what right
- 36:37She also said that there
- 36:39were athletes that wanted
- 36:40to keep participating,
- 36:42wanted to keep the prize money,
- 36:43wanted to keep at the games.
- 36:45Right.
- 36:46And she went on to say she
- 36:48almost didn't compete in
- 36:49Tier Cup because there was
- 36:53a perceived divide amongst the athletes.
- 36:58Now, when she got there,
- 37:01she was relieved that it
- 37:02was not as bad as she thought it was.
- 37:06But they did it, and again,
- 37:09go to the spin and listen
- 37:10to the full interview.
- 37:11It's really worth the ten
- 37:14minutes of that part that she talks.
- 37:17But they ask her about the PFAA,
- 37:19and if her demands or her
- 37:21decision for next year are
- 37:23the same as the demands for the PFAA,
- 37:25and she said they were not,
- 37:27that her only real demand
- 37:29is that she wants a
- 37:30committee to run the games.
- 37:32She wants it to be more than one person.
- 37:36And she went on to say she
- 37:38doesn't care if Dave Castro
- 37:39is a part of that committee.
- 37:44Would you not want it to be
- 37:45just yes men either?
- 37:47Yeah, I can see that.
- 37:48I mean,
- 37:49would you not consider Heather and
- 37:52Adrian a part of the games team?
- 37:55See, I don't think what,
- 37:56I don't think people even
- 37:57know what the games team is
- 37:58or who has what authority.
- 38:01Yeah.
- 38:02I think normally they have a
- 38:06lot of back and forth
- 38:07between ideas and stuff like that.
- 38:08But through all the
- 38:09interviews of this year,
- 38:11Dave had continuously said, I got this.
- 38:14I have my creative juices going.
- 38:16I will do the individual
- 38:18side of the games and you guys take that.
- 38:20So I think that perspective
- 38:22made it seem like he was
- 38:24the only person involved.
- 38:26And he is a huge person involved in this.
- 38:28the final decision making of stuff.
- 38:30So I understand what Ariel saying is,
- 38:33you know,
- 38:34get more people thinking about
- 38:37the programming to have, you know,
- 38:39different creative people
- 38:41and opinions on on
- 38:44movements and take take experience,
- 38:46maybe also from other competitions,
- 38:48like Pat brought that up before,
- 38:51in his interview in terms
- 38:52of watching other
- 38:53competitions to not make
- 38:54the same mistakes and
- 38:56different things that they could program.
- 38:59So Larry says here, if Dave is involved,
- 39:03he will have the last say.
- 39:04And I, and, and then he said,
- 39:06I understand that she didn't want that.
- 39:09I agree.
- 39:09If Dave stays involved, he's, I mean,
- 39:12that's just Dave.
- 39:14He's going to end up having the last say.
- 39:16So he like,
- 39:17I think there's already a team.
- 39:20I truly believe that.
- 39:22Yes.
- 39:23With programming,
- 39:23Dave probably has the final say.
- 39:26As to whether the games continued on,
- 39:28I think that came down from the board,
- 39:33and they dictated, we can't lose money,
- 39:36you have to go on,
- 39:37and Dave was the face that
- 39:39had to go out and announce that.
- 39:41Right?
- 39:43Right.
- 39:45The thing is,
- 39:46if there's other people involved,
- 39:48they have to have equal say.
- 39:51If Dave is still at the top
- 39:54and they have opinions,
- 39:55but then everything at the
- 39:56end of the day falls on
- 39:57Dave's ultimate decision,
- 40:00I think that that's where
- 40:01Ariel was saying she wants
- 40:03it to be more... You're not
- 40:06just a yes-man to Dave and
- 40:09anything that he'll say.
- 40:10You can have differences of
- 40:12opinion and have...
- 40:15Yeah,
- 40:15like you're saying the programming
- 40:17and changes can happen with
- 40:19your ideas as well.
- 40:22I think that's what she
- 40:24meant for if Dave is to stay.
- 40:27She wants to make sure that
- 40:27the other people are not
- 40:29just trying to please him.
- 40:34I do agree.
- 40:35I think you're correct.
- 40:38And that she was saying that.
- 40:41Um,
- 40:42she was also asked in this interview
- 40:43and again, the spin did a great job.
- 40:46She was also asked if she
- 40:47was a member of the PFAA
- 40:49and she said that she was not,
- 40:52and she was not,
- 40:52and they asked her why she was not.
- 40:54And she said she didn't want
- 40:55to get into that publicly,
- 40:58but she would say that
- 40:59actions speak louder than words.
- 41:03And, uh, and so that,
- 41:05that hit with a pretty good thud,
- 41:07I thought, um,
- 41:10I'm trying to find something,
- 41:15and it was probably a story,
- 41:16and I'll never be able to find it again.
- 41:19But the one thing I want to
- 41:20say about the PFAA,
- 41:21which brought back this memory of mine,
- 41:24last year at the games,
- 41:26the PFAA made a post on Instagram.
- 41:29It was probably a story,
- 41:30but they had given a list
- 41:32of ten items to CrossFit
- 41:34that they wanted fixed.
- 41:37CrossFit came back with
- 41:38answers for all of those.
- 41:41Eight of those were addressed and,
- 41:44and complied with two of
- 41:47those couldn't be.
- 41:48And CrossFit gave the reason why not.
- 41:53So when the PFA keeps saying
- 41:54that CrossFit never listens
- 41:55and CrossFit never pays attention,
- 41:58like I think that's
- 42:00misleading because there is
- 42:02evidence out there.
- 42:04I wish I could find it.
- 42:05Um,
- 42:07They did send something to CrossFit.
- 42:09CrossFit answered them on all ten counts,
- 42:13and the one that couldn't
- 42:16be done was risers stacked
- 42:17too high because their
- 42:18insurance company would not
- 42:21allow them to be stacked
- 42:22more than too high for reasons.
- 42:26And then the other one,
- 42:26I can't remember what it was,
- 42:28but I know there were two
- 42:29they had to say no to.
- 42:33I remember seeing if you
- 42:35remember bar heights were changed.
- 42:37So they had an option on the
- 42:38final event to go to the
- 42:40high bar or the low bar to
- 42:42do to do the bar muscle ups
- 42:46at the end of the games.
- 42:48And that was one of the
- 42:49requests that was put in there as well.
- 42:51I think most of like those
- 42:52things are pretty like
- 42:54self-explanatory things
- 42:56that like CrossFit can change.
- 42:57And it's more so like what
- 42:59you see at different comps
- 43:00and what works and what
- 43:01kind of should get standardized.
- 43:03I still think the biggest
- 43:04issue with the PFAA and
- 43:08CrossFit is the fact that
- 43:09we have it's based off of
- 43:11its current athletes that
- 43:13are in this PFAA and we
- 43:15have a sport of unknown.
- 43:17And until like, because our sports unknown,
- 43:20like there are certain
- 43:21things that like are not
- 43:23discussed with current
- 43:24athletes or should not be
- 43:25discussed with current
- 43:26athletes outside of just
- 43:28like regular
- 43:29standardization of certain
- 43:32equipment and stuff like that.
- 43:34Like having access to any
- 43:36type of information that
- 43:38other athletes don't have
- 43:39access to is a huge advantage, right?
- 43:42Um, so I, like,
- 43:45I feel like the CrossFit side has like a,
- 43:49maybe it's, it's hard to, to,
- 43:51to talk fully open on
- 43:52certain aspects because of the unknown.
- 43:55Like, it's just like, you don't, you don't,
- 43:57it's not a,
- 43:57it's not a thing in other sports.
- 43:59Like you can have the NHL PA
- 44:02or NFL PA and like there's,
- 44:04and have literally like a
- 44:06union and discussions with
- 44:08the commissioner or with
- 44:09the league about different
- 44:10rule changes and stuff like that.
- 44:11But
- 44:14Yeah,
- 44:15I think the biggest thing for us is
- 44:17the unknown.
- 44:19Well, and to be honest,
- 44:21every players association
- 44:23and executive committee do
- 44:27not get along in every sport.
- 44:30They want different things.
- 44:31They want two different things,
- 44:32and you've got to come to an agreement.
- 44:37And to me, at this point,
- 44:38I think both sides are
- 44:39having a hard time with compromise.
- 44:41I wonder like if you could do, you know,
- 44:44every competition,
- 44:45the events need to be out, you know,
- 44:48one week in advance or
- 44:49something like that.
- 44:50It's still unknown in terms of like,
- 44:52you didn't really train for,
- 44:53you're not able to test everything.
- 44:54And then in that week,
- 44:55the PFA could look at the workouts and,
- 44:57and if there was any safety
- 45:00concerns or anything like that,
- 45:01or I don't know, um,
- 45:04I guess it's somewhat of a compromise,
- 45:05but, uh,
- 45:08Yeah.
- 45:10I don't know.
- 45:11I just don't know what the
- 45:11solution is because of that
- 45:13part of our sport.
- 45:14Yeah.
- 45:16Well,
- 45:16while it's super important to our sport,
- 45:18I think it's the biggest
- 45:18thing that hinders the
- 45:20growth of our sport in my opinion.
- 45:23And we've talked about a lot,
- 45:24like the minute someone
- 45:26gets an edge because they
- 45:27know something ahead of other athletes,
- 45:30then it puts into question
- 45:31everything around the, the event.
- 45:34Yeah.
- 45:34And we see it every year,
- 45:35every single year, people have, uh,
- 45:38leaks of different information.
- 45:39We saw it this year.
- 45:40We saw in other years,
- 45:42like the amount of people
- 45:43that were practicing Chad this year with,
- 45:45with the boxes that were like that.
- 45:48Um, the leaks and the leaks in the open,
- 45:53the leaks came from, was it Sydney?
- 45:57Did anyone haven't heard?
- 46:01I am not in that circle.
- 46:06but, uh, it could be like, they're all,
- 46:10the thing is they're all
- 46:11friends with competitors.
- 46:12Like,
- 46:13like Tudor's friends with all of those,
- 46:15those young people like
- 46:16Dallin and them that were like,
- 46:17was doing it.
- 46:17Like you have no idea.
- 46:18Sydney has a twin sister competing.
- 46:21People are part of training camps.
- 46:22Like it's so hard to people
- 46:24are testing workouts are
- 46:25part of training camps or
- 46:26have friends that are
- 46:27competing or friends of friends.
- 46:28Like it's
- 46:32Well,
- 46:33Crash Crucible is coming up this weekend.
- 46:34We know every single event,
- 46:36and we knew it last Sunday night.
- 46:40Does it hurt that event that
- 46:41we know them two weeks ahead of time?
- 46:50No.
- 46:50I think there's nothing
- 46:52wrong with releasing the
- 46:53workouts one or two weeks in advance.
- 46:56It's not like you train the
- 46:58whole year for knowing these events,
- 47:00right?
- 47:01Like now you get to practice
- 47:02and have a better showcase there.
- 47:04There's less questions about
- 47:05the flow of the events,
- 47:06the standard of the events.
- 47:07Like JR sent out everything on the flow,
- 47:11the equipment that was used as well.
- 47:12Like what types of barbells
- 47:13are used in like everything.
- 47:15So you can literally
- 47:16visualize the workout and,
- 47:18and see it happen.
- 47:19Like, I think that's, that's professional.
- 47:23And it avoids having mistakes there.
- 47:25And if someone sees
- 47:26something that they can,
- 47:28that might be problematic or could be,
- 47:30maybe they didn't think of,
- 47:31you have a week or two to
- 47:33talk to JR about it and
- 47:34maybe it gets addressed and
- 47:35they change something.
- 47:37Because now people are
- 47:38trying the workouts and
- 47:41this is the time that you
- 47:42can figure out if there's
- 47:43something that needs to get changed.
- 47:45Like that's, that to me is professional.
- 47:47Like you, you know what to expect.
- 47:51Without killing like the unknown.
- 47:52It's still like it was
- 47:53unknown for like this whole time.
- 47:57Yeah.
- 47:59So then this week, supposedly,
- 48:03the rumor is that the third
- 48:05party investigation will be
- 48:06completed and done this week.
- 48:11What do you think the
- 48:12chances are we know
- 48:13anything once it's done?
- 48:17Hmm.
- 48:20I mean,
- 48:23I feel like the medical examiner's
- 48:27report or whatever has to become public,
- 48:28right?
- 48:31The autopsy never was publicized, right?
- 48:34No.
- 48:35No, because I think it's being held.
- 48:37Like they blocked that for
- 48:39the investigation, you think?
- 48:40I'm betting, yeah.
- 48:41Yes.
- 48:41Yes.
- 48:44I think even if the investigation is done,
- 48:47I think there's still going
- 48:48to be lawyers involved to
- 48:49figure things out,
- 48:49so I don't think we're
- 48:50going to know anything for a while.
- 48:53Well, John Woolley said this way back when,
- 48:55and so I'm just kind of quoting him,
- 48:56and it makes sense to me,
- 48:57and that is that due to HR law,
- 49:02you have to protect your
- 49:03employees that are named in
- 49:06the investigation until you
- 49:10finish out whatever you're doing.
- 49:14And even at some point,
- 49:15you may never be able to
- 49:16release their name.
- 49:19So I think if we do get it,
- 49:20it will be very redacted
- 49:22with names because they have to,
- 49:25by HR law,
- 49:27have to ensure the privacy of
- 49:30their employees.
- 49:33Interesting.
- 49:34Unless the employee gives
- 49:35them permission to release the name.
- 49:38The things that I'm more
- 49:39curious about is people on
- 49:41the paddle boards.
- 49:42Did they have any certification,
- 49:44any equipment that they
- 49:45were supposed to have and
- 49:46just didn't have out there?
- 49:48Most times,
- 49:50if you're running an event in a city,
- 49:52there's a bare minimum of
- 49:54safety procedures that you
- 49:56have to have in place.
- 49:56Was this the bare minimum?
- 49:58Stuff like that, I'd want to know.
- 50:00But for the most part,
- 50:01I don't think it's going to
- 50:01change most of people's
- 50:03opinions on what happened.
- 50:05We all had two eyes and saw what we saw.
- 50:08and will conclude.
- 50:11I feel like most people have
- 50:12their minds made up,
- 50:13whether there's whatever
- 50:14proof or not proof of what happened.
- 50:18Um,
- 50:19at the end of the day,
- 50:20I just hope and feel like it's,
- 50:23things are going to change
- 50:24in the sense of they're
- 50:26going to have to find ways to,
- 50:28to make the sport safer.
- 50:30And hopefully they've learned, you know,
- 50:32how many people should be
- 50:33on the water and all of the
- 50:35protocols that need to be
- 50:36in place to really keep the
- 50:38athletes safe.
- 50:39And it's,
- 50:41tragic and unfortunate that
- 50:42it had to come to someone's
- 50:44death to make real change.
- 50:48But I'm hopeful that things
- 50:52will get better and nothing
- 50:55like this will ever happen again.
- 50:58Yeah.
- 50:59I mean, I feel like there's, I mean,
- 51:01there's probably multiple
- 51:03outcomes of this, but like,
- 51:04I feel like the
- 51:05investigation could have
- 51:06come back with something
- 51:10something in Lazar's ownership.
- 51:15And I think if that's the case,
- 51:17we'll probably hear about it.
- 51:19And, and, and then other, other than that,
- 51:22I think unless they found
- 51:24just gross negligence by the team,
- 51:29whoever put it in place and
- 51:30that's revealed and someone's,
- 51:32someone's fired or I don't even,
- 51:34I don't even know if there could be like,
- 51:37jail time over something like this,
- 51:38but I'm sure there's going
- 51:39to be a civil lawsuit.
- 51:43So until like that's named
- 51:44and you see why it,
- 51:47is there going to be something in the,
- 51:48in the middle there?
- 51:49Like something, I mean, probably,
- 51:51I don't know,
- 51:52like there's probably gonna
- 51:53mean really nothing drowning.
- 51:57This was the plan that was
- 51:58approved by the city of Fort Worth.
- 52:01Everyone did their job.
- 52:04You know,
- 52:05it just wasn't a good plan and
- 52:06probably a plan is going to
- 52:07have to be revised moving
- 52:09forward is what the result's going to be.
- 52:11Like safety plans will be
- 52:12written a little bit more
- 52:14stringent in the future.
- 52:17Cause it's going to be really hard.
- 52:19Like it's going to be really hard to put,
- 52:22I think most people would
- 52:22say the blame's on that
- 52:23paddleboard lifeguard.
- 52:27But I, you know, I don't know that you can,
- 52:32like, what are you going to do?
- 52:35like here's what's going to happen.
- 52:37Right.
- 52:37I think people were already,
- 52:39like Carolyn said,
- 52:41they're already entrenched
- 52:42in whatever way they believe this.
- 52:44Yeah.
- 52:45And they're going to find
- 52:46what they needed.
- 52:46They saw everything that they saw.
- 52:49Right.
- 52:49It's going to,
- 52:50it's going to be worded in
- 52:51ways that you're going to
- 52:52pick the part that you need
- 52:54to support your argument.
- 52:56And it's your,
- 52:57and so my fear is it's going
- 52:59to create a greater divide
- 53:02than to unify the community.
- 53:06then we're gonna have to
- 53:06recover from all this again
- 53:08like I think tear cup
- 53:10helped us like move forward
- 53:12a little bit and then this
- 53:13is gonna get released and
- 53:14we're gonna be back to
- 53:15square zero or square one
- 53:18and we're gonna be all
- 53:19going through this all
- 53:20again rehashing everything
- 53:22again yeah it'll be all
- 53:24over the news again
- 53:25Yeah.
- 53:26And then we,
- 53:27those of us who are there are
- 53:28going to have to relive
- 53:29those days again and
- 53:31everything that happened
- 53:32and it's going to take a
- 53:33while to recover.
- 53:34And hopefully rogue happens
- 53:36fast enough that we have
- 53:38something positive to like
- 53:40look forward to.
- 53:42But my last thing about this
- 53:44whole safety thing,
- 53:46like I don't think people
- 53:47really give a shit about safety.
- 53:50I think it's just that they
- 53:52either have an ax to grind or they don't.
- 53:54And they're using Lazar's
- 53:58death to make whatever thing they want.
- 54:03I watched NorCal Classic and
- 54:04people dropping barbells
- 54:05almost on each other's heads in videos.
- 54:08That wasn't from NorCal.
- 54:10It wasn't?
- 54:11Well, okay.
- 54:12The one that Andrew Hiller
- 54:13posted that went over someone,
- 54:14that is not from NorCal.
- 54:16I thought it was the
- 54:17intermediate division or whatever.
- 54:19That was from another competition.
- 54:21Okay.
- 54:22My bad.
- 54:23I retract that.
- 54:25Tear cup.
- 54:26I watch a floor that's soaked with dew.
- 54:30People are skating around.
- 54:32People are slipping off bars.
- 54:34And nobody said a word.
- 54:40I think that people are just
- 54:41pissed off at CrossFit HQ because
- 54:44And they're using this
- 54:45tragedy to grind that ax at
- 54:49what's going on.
- 54:50I agree.
- 54:52So, and maybe I'm wrong.
- 54:55I think when money's involved,
- 54:57people like ignore or will...
- 55:02Guadalupalooza last year was
- 55:03a shit show in Miami.
- 55:06In the rain, people sliding,
- 55:09trying to do wall walks,
- 55:11banging their head on the
- 55:14seating because the rowers
- 55:16were set too close to the seating.
- 55:20There just was so many
- 55:21things that were of safety concern.
- 55:25I think safety is important.
- 55:27I think that like you want
- 55:29to make sure that there's
- 55:30some like there's inherent
- 55:32risk in doing any type of
- 55:34physical activity.
- 55:34And I think you you as an
- 55:36athlete need to take that on.
- 55:37But then there's other
- 55:38situations where it is like dangerous,
- 55:42like when it's raining and
- 55:43stuff like that,
- 55:43like you want to make sure
- 55:44that you're protected and stuff.
- 55:46Um, but you just hope that people don't,
- 55:49the problem is with some,
- 55:50some of those competitions
- 55:51when they have a lot of
- 55:52money on the line is they
- 55:54just ignore those safety
- 55:55things because of the money
- 55:56that's on the line.
- 55:56And I think that's where
- 55:57Ariel was talking about,
- 55:58like actions speak louder than words.
- 56:00Like when the, you know, when,
- 56:02when the money is there, like put your,
- 56:05what's the saying,
- 56:06put your money where your mouth is,
- 56:08whatever the saying is.
- 56:09Yeah.
- 56:09Where your mouth is.
- 56:11Yeah.
- 56:11Yeah.
- 56:11Like if, if you're talking about safety,
- 56:13let's talk about safety and
- 56:14let's change the sport and,
- 56:16and let's put the money to
- 56:17the side and make like actual change.
- 56:20Um,
- 56:22because if we just keep coming back to
- 56:24water Palooza and they get
- 56:25thousands of competitors, then, you know,
- 56:27they're getting away with
- 56:28certain stuff all the time.
- 56:30But if people don't come back and,
- 56:33you know, change it,
- 56:34change is going to have to happen.
- 56:35Um, but I think like,
- 56:38I think safety is important.
- 56:39It's just.
- 56:41It's sometimes like the
- 56:44money's on the line and
- 56:45people are going for it.
- 56:47Like it's just truth.
- 56:50And they're like, well,
- 56:51if they want to slow down for safety,
- 56:52like I'm going to go for,
- 56:54for this event and yeah.
- 56:55I don't know.
- 57:01I get upset because I knew Lazar.
- 57:04I I'm, I am sad that he died.
- 57:08And I feel like people are
- 57:09using his tragedy for their
- 57:11own benefit sometimes.
- 57:13So that's why I get upset
- 57:15and think that people do things.
- 57:18But I'll take a breath and
- 57:23be okay with that for now.
- 57:28So on to like...
- 57:30some better news crossfit um
- 57:34I learned of this when I
- 57:35was at the crossfit masters
- 57:37games uh mariah moore and
- 57:39tyson oroid were at the
- 57:42masters crossfit games and
- 57:44they were tasked with doing
- 57:45vignettes of different
- 57:47people that were at the uh
- 57:51masters crossfit games the
- 57:52first one of those was released last
- 57:55this last week and it's
- 57:56really good it's a little
- 57:58five minute vignette about
- 58:00one of the head judges at
- 58:01the masters crossfit games
- 58:04who had a gym locally got
- 58:06hit like eleven or twelve
- 58:08people from his community
- 58:09to also come volunteer and
- 58:12then they kind of followed
- 58:13them around and went to
- 58:14dinner with them and they
- 58:16went around the table and told
- 58:19their story of why they did CrossFit,
- 58:22why it's important to them.
- 58:24And like almost all of them
- 58:27had major weight loss stories.
- 58:31And it was the best thing
- 58:34that CrossFit has put out
- 58:35in a very long time.
- 58:39It was awesome.
- 58:40If you have not seen that,
- 58:42you should definitely,
- 58:43definitely check it out.
- 58:45And according to Mariah,
- 58:46because we talked a little bit there,
- 58:49I think there's at least
- 58:49five more coming out from the master.
- 58:52Is that on the new YouTube
- 58:54channel or something?
- 58:55Or wasn't there like a new YouTube channel,
- 58:57like a CrossFit training or
- 58:58something that they're doing?
- 58:59Is it on that?
- 59:01Or is it on Instagram?
- 59:02It might be just on the games channel.
- 59:03On the games channel.
- 59:06I think there was a link
- 59:06from Instagram to the full video.
- 59:11I watched it on YouTube.
- 59:12So wherever I did not note
- 59:15down which channel it was on,
- 59:17but it's really, really good.
- 59:22And like I said, it's five minutes.
- 59:24So it doesn't even take much
- 59:25of your day to kind of check it out.
- 59:30And again, there's more coming.
- 59:32And I think that,
- 59:32I think they went to the
- 59:33adaptive and the teens too.
- 59:35They sent some crews to those.
- 59:37So hopefully we'll hear some
- 59:38stuff from there too.
- 59:39And it wasn't just athletes.
- 59:41So Andrew asking about staff
- 59:43and all that earlier
- 59:44CrossFit actually with this
- 59:47was a head judge, um,
- 59:49at the masters CrossFit games.
- 59:52So I know Becca Voigt is the
- 59:54subject of one of them.
- 59:56Um,
- 59:58But I because I because
- 1:00:00Mariah actually filmed me filming Becca.
- 1:00:05For that one,
- 1:00:06and I don't know if it'll
- 1:00:07make the cut or not,
- 1:00:08but but that's she
- 1:00:09explained it to me
- 1:00:10afterwards that she wasn't
- 1:00:13trying to steal my interview.
- 1:00:15She just was.
- 1:00:17And I said, it's all fine.
- 1:00:17We're all good.
- 1:00:18We can work together.
- 1:00:22so yeah go ahead and check
- 1:00:23that out um it's really
- 1:00:26good and then I just wanted
- 1:00:27to finish up with um reps
- 1:00:30ahead as announced they're
- 1:00:32doing uh reps ahead five
- 1:00:35and it looks like
- 1:00:36thanksgiving weekend maybe
- 1:00:39I put the dates down on the
- 1:00:40twenty-third and
- 1:00:41twenty-fourth in denver
- 1:00:42which is where they first got started
- 1:00:46I wanted to.
- 1:00:47That's the week before Thanksgiving.
- 1:00:49Thanksgiving is like the
- 1:00:50last day of November this year.
- 1:00:56So I'm going to share my screen.
- 1:00:59The venue they are using is super cool.
- 1:01:05So it's November,
- 1:01:06and it is during another company,
- 1:01:09the MBS Turkey challenge.
- 1:01:12So they're doing it in
- 1:01:13conjunction with that event,
- 1:01:15but check out this venue.
- 1:01:18Is that not the coolest
- 1:01:19venue for like a one-on-one competition?
- 1:01:26Yeah, that's awesome.
- 1:01:27So what it made me think
- 1:01:28about is I've been watching
- 1:01:30Mr. McMahon on Netflix,
- 1:01:33which is the Vince McMahon story.
- 1:01:35And in the nineties,
- 1:01:36there was the Monday night
- 1:01:37wars where WCW was going up
- 1:01:40against the WWE for ratings and WCW had a,
- 1:01:46um,
- 1:01:47like a studio where they would do a
- 1:01:48lot of their events and the
- 1:01:50wrestlers didn't have to
- 1:01:51travel like they did in the WWE.
- 1:01:53Yeah.
- 1:01:55wouldn't it be cool to have
- 1:01:57like this dedicated arena
- 1:02:00like this for these
- 1:02:02one-on-one competitions
- 1:02:12yeah um but anyway I
- 1:02:13thought it was pretty cool
- 1:02:14they have not announced the
- 1:02:15lineup but I just wanted
- 1:02:17for fun wanted to ask you two
- 1:02:21If you could make,
- 1:02:22like they always say in the
- 1:02:24fight game that styles make matches,
- 1:02:30meaning that not
- 1:02:33necessarily one versus two
- 1:02:35is the best matchup,
- 1:02:36but two people that have
- 1:02:39equal abilities at certain
- 1:02:41things make a better match
- 1:02:43than maybe one versus two.
- 1:02:45And with that being the thought process,
- 1:02:49Who would you want to see in
- 1:02:51a one-on-one battle like
- 1:02:53this in the CrossFit world?
- 1:02:56Pick one on the men and one on the women.
- 1:02:59A pairing.
- 1:03:01I mean,
- 1:03:02I feel like they've already sort of
- 1:03:03done it.
- 1:03:06To pick body types,
- 1:03:07you pick someone like
- 1:03:08Colton and Scott Tetlow.
- 1:03:10That's the perfect pairing.
- 1:03:12They have the same levers.
- 1:03:15So if you're going to do
- 1:03:16anything short range of motion,
- 1:03:17they're at least going to
- 1:03:18be pretty equal.
- 1:03:19Same with like Kyra and
- 1:03:21Annika who just went.
- 1:03:23Very, very similar levers.
- 1:03:27I think I'd like to see... I mean...
- 1:03:31I would I would like to take
- 1:03:33find somebody who's like
- 1:03:34almost like a specialist at
- 1:03:35some something and then
- 1:03:36find like their equal and
- 1:03:38give them a shot to see
- 1:03:40like how close they are.
- 1:03:43I'd almost like to see
- 1:03:43somebody like Emily Rolfe
- 1:03:45and Sidney Wells do something together.
- 1:03:50Like a running.
- 1:03:51Yeah.
- 1:03:52Running toaster bars thing.
- 1:03:53Yeah.
- 1:03:55See,
- 1:03:55I think I'd almost want to see the
- 1:03:56opposite.
- 1:03:57Like someone who's strong,
- 1:03:59but like still proficient
- 1:04:01at gymnastics and someone
- 1:04:02who's a specialist at a
- 1:04:03gymnastics movement and
- 1:04:04maybe not as good like on a
- 1:04:05machine or strength and how their styles,
- 1:04:09like where they make up
- 1:04:10time could be different on each other.
- 1:04:13I think that would be like a
- 1:04:16good race to watch as well.
- 1:04:18As long as you pick the
- 1:04:19movements that they're good
- 1:04:21at and a little bit of their like,
- 1:04:24weaknesses, I guess.
- 1:04:26Cause if it's not balanced like that,
- 1:04:29then it's not going to work.
- 1:04:31You have to know the
- 1:04:31athletes very well and their strengths.
- 1:04:33It's for the matches.
- 1:04:39Yeah.
- 1:04:39I picked Gabby versus DB.
- 1:04:43I mean, Laura versus Tia and you put,
- 1:04:47yeah.
- 1:04:47And you put like a machine
- 1:04:50echo bike that Laura will
- 1:04:51crush Tia anytime.
- 1:04:53Yeah.
- 1:04:54any amount of echo bike.
- 1:04:55And then you pair that with
- 1:04:57some sort of ring muscle up.
- 1:04:59And Tia is one of the best
- 1:05:00in the sport in that.
- 1:05:01Like,
- 1:05:02like you could just do like a high
- 1:05:05enough volume where the,
- 1:05:06the amount of time that Tia
- 1:05:07would lose on the echo bike,
- 1:05:09she can gain on the next
- 1:05:10movement and it becomes a race.
- 1:05:13Um, but who knows?
- 1:05:18Yeah, I, um,
- 1:05:20Cause people want to see the
- 1:05:21top people though.
- 1:05:22That's, that's a thing.
- 1:05:22They're not good matchups,
- 1:05:24but you still want to see the top.
- 1:05:28I want to see,
- 1:05:29I want to see the top person
- 1:05:30maybe go up against a specialist.
- 1:05:32Yes.
- 1:05:33Like, I think that would be cool.
- 1:05:34Like,
- 1:05:35and one thing that like popped into my,
- 1:05:38my head was,
- 1:05:39I would love to see a rematch
- 1:05:41of Velner versus Guy in a
- 1:05:42gymnastics workout.
- 1:05:44Yeah.
- 1:05:45where they don't have to...
- 1:05:48One of them doesn't have to
- 1:05:49be in debt based on the
- 1:05:51women who work for them.
- 1:05:52Yeah.
- 1:05:53Right, because that was a close,
- 1:05:55close race.
- 1:05:59And then you could do that
- 1:06:01in other aspects as well,
- 1:06:03like... I don't know.
- 1:06:09I'm having a hard time on
- 1:06:10the women's side.
- 1:06:11like Alex Kazan benching
- 1:06:14with something else with somebody else.
- 1:06:15Let's see how close somebody else can get.
- 1:06:19I like, I don't,
- 1:06:20or even like Kazan and Emma
- 1:06:22tall with some legless rope
- 1:06:23climbs mixed in with some other things.
- 1:06:25I don't know.
- 1:06:25That would be a good battle.
- 1:06:29Yeah.
- 1:06:32I just,
- 1:06:32I feel like reps ahead is getting
- 1:06:34in a rut of kind of the
- 1:06:35same athletes and say it's
- 1:06:37a very similar workouts.
- 1:06:40It has a lift, it has a box jump,
- 1:06:42and it has something on the bar.
- 1:06:44And I'm ready for something
- 1:06:46a little bit different.
- 1:06:48And I think it's okay, like you said,
- 1:06:55Carolyn,
- 1:06:55when one's good at one thing and
- 1:06:57one's good at another,
- 1:06:58let them get a little bit ahead,
- 1:07:00but the other person has
- 1:07:01the ability to catch them.
- 1:07:03So maybe twelve reps isn't ideal.
- 1:07:04Yeah.
- 1:07:05Yeah.
- 1:07:10Or maybe you just do it for time.
- 1:07:12It takes away from their concept.
- 1:07:17That's why I think the Fit Wars before,
- 1:07:21just like the workout is
- 1:07:22there and I like the
- 1:07:23matchups and everything,
- 1:07:24the reps ahead is a unique
- 1:07:26concept which I like,
- 1:07:29but I also like the Fit
- 1:07:30Wars where it's just like
- 1:07:31you grab two athletes, let's see,
- 1:07:33this is the workout,
- 1:07:34who wins this battle?
- 1:07:37There was something that was
- 1:07:39nice about that format as well.
- 1:07:41Like the,
- 1:07:42the reps I had took that aspect
- 1:07:44of the head to head and
- 1:07:45then made it unique in the
- 1:07:48differential scoring system.
- 1:07:51But I missed the fit wars
- 1:07:53aspect of just doing a
- 1:07:54workout and who wins.
- 1:07:56Yeah.
- 1:07:58Get to point A to point B,
- 1:07:59however you want.
- 1:08:00If you want to go out hot
- 1:08:02and then die and the other
- 1:08:03person goes out slow and then catches up.
- 1:08:05Like I like that.
- 1:08:08always thought it would be
- 1:08:09cool to do a fit wars and
- 1:08:12basically like everybody
- 1:08:15that comes to watch donates
- 1:08:17money and whatever the
- 1:08:18winner when the winner wins
- 1:08:21they get all that's donated
- 1:08:22from the chat like that is
- 1:08:25something you could do
- 1:08:26through our software
- 1:08:29two phone a phone in one gym
- 1:08:31a phone in the other gym do
- 1:08:32the workouts and and go one
- 1:08:36thing I would love to see
- 1:08:37is carlene matthews and
- 1:08:38jamie latimer yeah their
- 1:08:43heads are epic we're
- 1:08:44similar they are yeah and
- 1:08:52it happened the whole
- 1:08:53weekend at the masters crossfit games
- 1:08:57I would love to see that.
- 1:08:59And that's,
- 1:08:59what's cool about this format
- 1:09:01is that you could do it from,
- 1:09:02you could do teenagers,
- 1:09:03you could do masters,
- 1:09:04you could do whatever.
- 1:09:08And it'd be very easy to pull off.
- 1:09:10I just, yeah.
- 1:09:20The more opportunities we
- 1:09:22give the athletes to get exposure,
- 1:09:23the better.
- 1:09:25agree which is why I'm like
- 1:09:28trying to think of somebody
- 1:09:30you know like when you
- 1:09:31think of those pairings I'm
- 1:09:32not just trying to pull out
- 1:09:35dale as much like I love
- 1:09:36watching like dalen and
- 1:09:37hopper and like those are
- 1:09:39the colin they're the ones
- 1:09:41on all the time like
- 1:09:42somebody else needs to do
- 1:09:44workouts yeah like right
- 1:09:49now we're getting the same
- 1:09:50group yeah over and over
- 1:09:52again we need we need new blood
- 1:10:00One thing I left off the
- 1:10:01notes is Crash Crucible is this weekend.
- 1:10:05I thought I put it on there.
- 1:10:07You did.
- 1:10:07It's up top right after Carolyn went.
- 1:10:09You wanted to talk.
- 1:10:13I just wanted to get your
- 1:10:14impressions on we have
- 1:10:16Crash coming up this weekend.
- 1:10:18Carolyn is competing.
- 1:10:20I wanted to get your
- 1:10:21impressions on who you
- 1:10:21think will do well at Crash, but take
- 1:10:26I think Carolyn's going to do very well,
- 1:10:28but I'm taking her out of
- 1:10:29the mix for this exercise
- 1:10:33and saying who I think will do well.
- 1:10:36So who do you guys have?
- 1:10:39And Carolyn, we'll start with the men,
- 1:10:41and you don't have to do
- 1:10:42the women's side because
- 1:10:43you're competing against them.
- 1:10:48I mean, coming off the games,
- 1:10:49I think you have to go with Chris.
- 1:10:51Is it Ibera or Ibera?
- 1:10:52Yeah.
- 1:10:52Ibera.
- 1:10:55Um, I'm, he's a favorite.
- 1:10:57I think Taylor self and Colton, I think,
- 1:11:02um, to me,
- 1:11:03those are the three that on
- 1:11:06paper are the favorites.
- 1:11:09Um,
- 1:11:10now on paper and in execution is a
- 1:11:13different thing.
- 1:11:14Yeah, I agree.
- 1:11:15I think it's going to come
- 1:11:16down to Colton and Taylor,
- 1:11:18whether Chris gets third or
- 1:11:19not is the question for me.
- 1:11:22The thing with crashes,
- 1:11:23it's a different scoring, right?
- 1:11:25So, um, if you have a bad event,
- 1:11:28it can really crush you.
- 1:11:31Um, do you think, and I don't know,
- 1:11:33they're going to have a bad event though.
- 1:11:36No,
- 1:11:36but it just takes one blow up to happen.
- 1:11:38You just don't know, right?
- 1:11:39Like you,
- 1:11:41you get caught up in a race and
- 1:11:43something happens.
- 1:11:44Um, but yeah.
- 1:11:49I don't think so,
- 1:11:50but I'm just saying it's a
- 1:11:51different scoring system,
- 1:11:53and it definitely rewards
- 1:11:55specialists versus consistency.
- 1:12:01I would pick Chris.
- 1:12:03To win the whole thing?
- 1:12:04Yeah.
- 1:12:05Oh, I don't think so.
- 1:12:07I think it's going to come
- 1:12:08down to Taylor and Colton.
- 1:12:10I don't know enough about
- 1:12:11Chris in terms of his
- 1:12:12strengths and weaknesses yet.
- 1:12:14He's been slowly getting
- 1:12:17better and better every year.
- 1:12:18For sure.
- 1:12:19And he made the games the
- 1:12:20other two did not.
- 1:12:21Yep.
- 1:12:22Yeah.
- 1:12:24And he was very consistent at West Coast.
- 1:12:29I think that he... I think
- 1:12:32he... That's my pick.
- 1:12:33Heard it here first.
- 1:12:34That's a good pick.
- 1:12:36But my surprise, my dark horse...
- 1:12:39is Tristan Harrison.
- 1:12:41If people did not see
- 1:12:42Tristan at West Coast,
- 1:12:45he made a lot of noise for
- 1:12:47a person nobody knew.
- 1:12:48He was up in the top ten for
- 1:12:52a while at West Coast.
- 1:12:54Did he call in for Kel
- 1:12:56Taylor the day it started
- 1:12:58or the day before?
- 1:13:00It almost beat Taylor the day before,
- 1:13:03but messed up because he
- 1:13:04tried to do it all in one round.
- 1:13:06He was done, though.
- 1:13:10But he he's a good guy.
- 1:13:13We interviewed him for the show.
- 1:13:15I, I truly believe in him.
- 1:13:19I think he'll be top five for sure.
- 1:13:22Yeah.
- 1:13:22The men's race is going to be exciting.
- 1:13:26Then on the women's side,
- 1:13:28we'll let Carolyn sit this one out.
- 1:13:30Who do you got?
- 1:13:32I think I think Lydia Fish
- 1:13:36is going to be on the podium.
- 1:13:39um I think fee will do well
- 1:13:41I'm a little worried about
- 1:13:44a couple of these maybe
- 1:13:47being on the heavy side for
- 1:13:50her um although fee moves
- 1:13:53weight really well so I
- 1:13:55don't know um and I think
- 1:13:57jordan chefs is gonna do
- 1:13:58awesome I gotta go with caroline stanley
- 1:14:08she got better this year she
- 1:14:12did well at the games which
- 1:14:13was weird who knows what
- 1:14:15that really means and then
- 1:14:22this is really a question
- 1:14:23for you Carolyn Elizabeth
- 1:14:25Wishart killed it at NorCal
- 1:14:28she's good that was my dark
- 1:14:31horse pick ish
- 1:14:34um I will be shocked if she
- 1:14:37if she wins crash um I mean
- 1:14:40she's good she caught my
- 1:14:42eye last year at norcal
- 1:14:43classic and I've been
- 1:14:44following her stuff since
- 1:14:46then and she's impressive
- 1:14:49yeah she's my dark horse
- 1:14:51stan karen caroline
- 1:14:52stanley's my pick um but I
- 1:14:55do I do think that
- 1:14:58with this athleticism is an aspect.
- 1:15:00And I think that really
- 1:15:01plays into our co-host hands.
- 1:15:04And so I'm really excited to
- 1:15:06see Carolyn throw down with
- 1:15:08all these young ins,
- 1:15:10her and fee going against the young ins.
- 1:15:12How old is she?
- 1:15:15She's probably like, she's not.
- 1:15:18I would say, how do I say this?
- 1:15:20No,
- 1:15:25I would say she's probably around thirty.
- 1:15:27I think she's right around thirty.
- 1:15:29She's a young'un.
- 1:15:30I consider that young'un.
- 1:15:32Yeah, but Lydia Fish is a real young'un.
- 1:15:34Lydia's young.
- 1:15:36I think Lydia's going to win
- 1:15:37the midline sadness workout.
- 1:15:42She's impressive at syndicate.
- 1:15:44Yeah.
- 1:15:45Um,
- 1:15:45I don't know how her strict deficit or
- 1:15:50it's strict deficit, handstand pushups,
- 1:15:51right?
- 1:15:52Yeah.
- 1:15:52So I, for me, that one's killing me.
- 1:15:55I'm picking women because I
- 1:15:56just think there's so many
- 1:15:59women that are going to get
- 1:16:00stuck there and not even
- 1:16:01get through that workout,
- 1:16:02which is going to kill.
- 1:16:03I guess it, I don't know,
- 1:16:05like if a ton get stuck,
- 1:16:08I guess with this P scoring, I don't know,
- 1:16:12maybe a bunch of them will
- 1:16:13wind up at zero.
- 1:16:14or two points or something like,
- 1:16:16I don't know.
- 1:16:17I'm just,
- 1:16:17I'm trying to figure out who out
- 1:16:19of this group will get
- 1:16:20through that workout.
- 1:16:23I feel like if you, the rest is fine.
- 1:16:29Do you have any dark horse picks is Jordan,
- 1:16:31Jordan, your dark horse or just Jordan?
- 1:16:34Yeah.
- 1:16:34Jordan's my dark horse.
- 1:16:35Okay.
- 1:16:36I like Jordan a lot.
- 1:16:37It was Kyra competing.
- 1:16:38I didn't even see her on the list.
- 1:16:40Yeah, Kyra's competing.
- 1:16:41Oh, I didn't.
- 1:16:42We always put her down low
- 1:16:43and she gets pissed at us.
- 1:16:44So we might as well like
- 1:16:46just keep it rolling.
- 1:16:49Yeah.
- 1:16:52She should do well.
- 1:16:53She should do very well.
- 1:16:57Yeah,
- 1:16:57I just I don't like her endurance
- 1:17:00right now.
- 1:17:04Yeah, there's not.
- 1:17:06It's not a ton of endurance.
- 1:17:09just a lot in a couple days
- 1:17:10right yeah there's not too
- 1:17:14much quads for chiro like
- 1:17:15quads yeah like there's not
- 1:17:17much light like there's one
- 1:17:18workout that has squatting
- 1:17:20with the thrusters and the
- 1:17:22lunges but other than that
- 1:17:23a lot of it's cardio or um
- 1:17:26shoulder dependent or skill
- 1:17:29like a skill dependent like
- 1:17:30there's overhead squats in
- 1:17:31the last one but you're not
- 1:17:33doing you're not failing
- 1:17:33overhead squats because
- 1:17:34your legs are tired it's
- 1:17:35because your arms from
- 1:17:37like rope climbs or
- 1:17:38something like it's it's
- 1:17:39arms it's she has like
- 1:17:42because she's got really
- 1:17:43good uh lower body strength
- 1:17:45I mean she's a great puller
- 1:17:46too um I think has very
- 1:17:49good handstand push-ups as
- 1:17:50well yeah she with her
- 1:17:53shorter levers those
- 1:17:54handstand push-ups might be
- 1:17:56easiest for her jordan's
- 1:17:58got long arms lydia's got
- 1:17:59long arms so that sucks I
- 1:18:03can deadlift with my long arms yeah
- 1:18:07Nobody say anything about Nick Matthew.
- 1:18:09We just forgetting about him.
- 1:18:10I saw him.
- 1:18:12I, again, no, it's,
- 1:18:15I feel like he's like your squatter,
- 1:18:16like a Kyra.
- 1:18:17I, I don't,
- 1:18:19although I think he's got great,
- 1:18:21like strict handstand pushup.
- 1:18:23I don't know what his ring
- 1:18:24muscle up capacity is like.
- 1:18:26I think both Colton and
- 1:18:27Taylor will kill him on some of these.
- 1:18:31Ring muscle.
- 1:18:31Yeah.
- 1:18:34Yeah.
- 1:18:35Yeah.
- 1:18:35Yeah.
- 1:18:39Don't keep ignoring my pick.
- 1:18:42I think Nick will be
- 1:18:43relevant the whole weekend.
- 1:18:45Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:46He'll be in the mix.
- 1:18:49Don't know where he's at
- 1:18:51training-wise right now.
- 1:18:51I just think he might be a
- 1:18:53little bit behind those top three.
- 1:18:55Not much,
- 1:18:56but just enough that the other
- 1:18:57three separate a little bit.
- 1:18:59But again,
- 1:19:01this could be his CrossFit Games.
- 1:19:02That's what he's been training for, right?
- 1:19:04Yeah.
- 1:19:04Yeah.
- 1:19:08Did you see her?
- 1:19:08Good luck, Carolyn.
- 1:19:09Thank you.
- 1:19:12Shout out to Lana,
- 1:19:12who has been helping me
- 1:19:14with names for the Masters documentary.
- 1:19:20I just send her screenshots
- 1:19:22of my editing software.
- 1:19:25Lana, do you know who this is?
- 1:19:28Josh had to do that with me at the games.
- 1:19:32Who's this?
- 1:19:33Who's this?
- 1:19:34Every person.
- 1:19:35Who did that?
- 1:19:36yes rosy view photography uh
- 1:19:38yeah yeah yeah another one
- 1:19:40sorry I just thought about
- 1:19:42on the woman's side uh
- 1:19:47britney weiss that won the
- 1:19:49qualifier so she's one also
- 1:19:51that could do a dark horse
- 1:19:56I'm actually seeing Molly McGrandy, too,
- 1:19:58after a year with the Mayhem team,
- 1:20:01coming back individual,
- 1:20:04how she does on the individual side.
- 1:20:06She was on the Mayhem team.
- 1:20:15She's a home run hitter,
- 1:20:17so she's going to have some good river.
- 1:20:21I would expect the bike
- 1:20:25Double under?
- 1:20:26The bike double under.
- 1:20:27The power output that she
- 1:20:28has on the machines is
- 1:20:33better than anyone in the sport.
- 1:20:35In the quarterfinals, I think,
- 1:20:36demolished that rowing
- 1:20:37workout that had the step-ups.
- 1:20:41Any type of machine, she crushes that.
- 1:20:45I'll expect her to do very,
- 1:20:47very well there.
- 1:20:49There's no max lift, right?
- 1:20:53Nope.
- 1:20:53See, that's why I didn't,
- 1:20:55I didn't put her in the top for me.
- 1:20:57Cause if she, you, she had like a mat,
- 1:20:59if you had a max lift or a
- 1:21:01big handstand walk,
- 1:21:03like I would definitely go with her.
- 1:21:05And because her P score would be huge.
- 1:21:10The handstand,
- 1:21:10there is a handstand walk in midlife.
- 1:21:14But it's not like one,
- 1:21:15it's not like a sprint.
- 1:21:17Is she fast on her hands?
- 1:21:19I've never, I don't remember her.
- 1:21:20Yeah.
- 1:21:20She killed it at a West coast.
- 1:21:23But is she killing it because of the row?
- 1:21:25Yes,
- 1:21:26because it was because the Smith that
- 1:21:28was super fast on her hands.
- 1:21:30That's true.
- 1:21:32I think and I think Olivia
- 1:21:35was crushing the row,
- 1:21:36which then buys her time on
- 1:21:37the handstand walk.
- 1:21:38We already, we've already debated this.
- 1:21:40That was a rowing workout, Scott.
- 1:21:42A hundred percent.
- 1:21:44Unless you had like a tutor,
- 1:21:47like handstand walk that you could just.
- 1:21:49We'll be doing this show
- 1:21:50five years from now.
- 1:21:51And I'll be talking about it
- 1:21:52being a handstand workout.
- 1:21:53I don't know if I should
- 1:21:54talk about tutor's handstand walk though.
- 1:21:58Cole grease shaver is,
- 1:22:00has become the handstand.
- 1:22:01I mean, Victor Hoffer too.
- 1:22:05Yeah.
- 1:22:05Yeah.
- 1:22:06There's some good hands in one.
- 1:22:07Cole was blazing fast at West coast.
- 1:22:11That was impressive.
- 1:22:14Sprinting.
- 1:22:17All right.
- 1:22:17Well, maybe, um,
- 1:22:21Jamie and I'll pop on if
- 1:22:22she's not at tennis
- 1:22:23tournaments next weekend
- 1:22:25after some of the crash.
- 1:22:26I should be free.
- 1:22:30Uh, talking about what we saw that day.
- 1:22:33Um,
- 1:22:35and we will be back next
- 1:22:37sunday I'm actually going
- 1:22:39to pittsburgh next weekend
- 1:22:40okay um but I'll be back in
- 1:22:43the hotel in the evenings
- 1:22:46so you're definitely not
- 1:22:49going to crash no my
- 1:22:50daughter just got a new job
- 1:22:53she's giving us our car
- 1:22:54back yay so going to
- 1:22:57pittsburgh to get that
- 1:22:59celebrate with her uh
- 1:23:01because she's now going to
- 1:23:03a studio to be a photographer
- 1:23:05Did she take the NRA job or whatever?
- 1:23:08No, she did not.
- 1:23:09No,
- 1:23:09she got another job offer right after
- 1:23:11that at a photo studio and
- 1:23:14is taking that job.
- 1:23:16And we're super excited for her.
- 1:23:18So head into Pittsburgh for
- 1:23:20that and celebrate with her.
- 1:23:23And yeah,
- 1:23:24and then we'll be back to do the
- 1:23:25show next Sunday night.
- 1:23:27But look for maybe some crash updates.
- 1:23:30We will see you all next time on
- 1:23:34Lydesdale Media's Sunday
- 1:23:36Night CrossFit Talk.
